Need help deciding. MT4G or slide. - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My replacement MT4G arrived two days ago and has the bad screen. Today the lower buttons stored working. They offered me a MT4G slide but I don't know if its better. Should I call them back and get it or take a chance with another replacement? They haven't adopted it yet. Don't know what to do. Thank you in advance.

Take the slide dude !
Welcome to the DARKSIDE

Yes its way better , dual core more ram better camera its similar to an htc sensation but with out the qhd display, with better camera and keyboard.
The only con about it for me is that it doesn't have as many roms as the glacier but I'm sure that will pick up soon now that the source code was released

It actually has the same amount of RAM, and a smaller display.

Get the Slide.
1. Higher re-sale value... Actually it's much higher.
2. Dual core
3. CM7 is now available for it

Thanks guys. I called back and said that once they put the order in they can't change it. I guess i, blew my chance. Of course if the next one come in with another bad screen I know what to do.

They tried to get me to switch to a Slide too when my most recent MT4G broke.
But I hate slidey keyboards. I mean I HATE them. Plus the slide is a thicker handset, which isn't as pocket friendly.
I told them I'd gladly switch to a sensation, but they weren't going for that. I don't get it. Both are HTC products. They sell them both for $200 with a new contract. What's the different to T Mobile?
I'm 100% certain that my next replacement MT4G will be borked somehow too because it's pretty obvious to me that the product line has dismal quality control. I think the only solution is to let them give me the 4G slide and give it to my wife who loves slidey keyboard phones and upgrade her line to the Sensation and take that one for myself.
(Why didn't I just buy the damned Sensation from the beginning?)

I'm okay with the thicker phone. I have some paralysis in my hand so I need the thicker phone. I do like the new camera and the high def camera.

For the longest time, I was annoyed with the trend of phones moving toward touchscreen interfaces because they lack tactile feedback—not only from the click of a key, but the feeling of the gaps between keys or indentations on keys to know which key you're pressing. I can't dial or scroll through my contacts without looking anymore and the vibration feedback won't tell me where my finger is on the screen. However, at least I have more precise voice command features, and Swype has quickly become my favorite input method for word composition.
I find slide keyboards to go to the other extreme in having to deal with the bulk and the complication of a moving part and trying to type on QWERTY keyboard with only your thumbs. It's not the same as having a full-sized computer keyboard, and I'm much faster with Swype than typing with my thumbs.
If billwinkle can choose between the MT4G and MT4GS for the same price, I say get the MT4GS and if he doesn't like it, sell it on eBay, play panel lottery on eBay for a good MT4G, and pocket the difference. That said, I think the decision has already been made.

The developing sections is deserted right now... maybe in a month we'll have a great assortment of roms...until then I don't think you should say that.

There may not be a plethora of ROMs for the MT4GS, but once you strip out all the bloatware, it is unstoppable! I have tried and tried again to take my phone to it's limit (ie: maxing out open browser windows, opening messages and emails, random apps, etc.) and have yet to experience my phone buckling under the stress I put it through. I actually run out of apps to open before my RAM is depleted. And once I'm finished, the *stock* Task Manager is excellent for clearing out the RAM being used. The dual core is definitely a step up. Everything responds much smoother. My gf has the Glacier and I have the Slide. I see the differences every day. She's about to return hers for warranty replacement and hopefully she gets offered the Slide. My $.02.

Tell her to ask for the slide, not just hope they offer it.
You may have to have 2 warranty replacements before they offer the slide. I have no idea. But it's pretty straight forward. They slide is considered a direct replacement for the Glacier.

Your right, sometimes the CSRs just don't do there job you might have to ask.

I did end up getting the slide after the second replacement had the bad screen. So far except for the bloat its a very nice phone after all.thank you everyone for helping me make the decision to go with MT4GS. Now I have to learn to root it and get rid of that bloat.

Poll: Are you going to return your G2?

I'm not trying to flame or troll or piss off anyone. I think it would just be useful to have some stats on the matter of G2 remorse now that the remorse period for many of us is coming to a close.
Isnt there already a post like this? Im staying with mine.

If the Vibrant's Froyo OTA really fixes the GPS issue then I'll consider it. Super AMOLED screen + superior GPU + GPS fix + root = win. I really would have loved the G2, I just can't get over the POS hinge. I'd even prefer a plastic phone with a sturdy hinge.
But if I switched to the Vibrant, I would miss HSPA+.
I'll wait and see if there's a Gingerbread announcement this week.

Thinking of maybe returning it then get that new my touch that's coming out soon. That front facing camera is my only thing missing with the G2. Other than that I love this phone...upgrading from G1 so having this phone is so much faster and so smooth.

I don't think anybody knows yet.
I can't answer this poll because I don't have my G2 yet, but I'm paying retail for mine, and it's doubtful I will be so disappointed in it that I'd return it.
I got my phone on the first and havnt had a single problem. It hasnt rebooted a single time, my hinge doesnt open when upside down, I can go about 2 days without charging (I use my phone quite a bit), and coming from the G1, wouldnt trade it for anything else
Lack of full root and crappy hinge.... but still a awesome phone I wouldn't get anything else coming out right now

I am confused between the G2 oh Vibrant
To everyone that is thinking about returning your phone for root reasons.. what makes you think that the MytouchHD or any newer phones coming out will be able to get root working if we havnt got root working on the G2 YET! its just a matter of time before someone cracks the code. Many people thrashing the G2 because it hasnt got root yet if ignorant to the fact that almost all new phones that come out will have some kind of security measure. So if your returning your phone for my MytouchHD goodluck to you my friends, impatience will be the death of you.
Definitely gonna keep mine. The hinge is working out just fine for me, never had it open or close on me. I came from the Nexus One and love how much more responsive the G2 is. I also love having a keyboard although I found the G1 keyboard faster to type on.
Only cons that bug me are the fact that the keyboard doesn't have separate number keys (like the G1) and that you can't force the keyboard backlighting to turn on every time you use it. That light sensor crap is getting a little annoying when the back lighting keeps going on and off in dim light. Otherwise I'm very happy. Paid full price as well.

Has anyone gotten it to be fully rooted? I see some people complaining about the processor but from what i read from a pre release was that it had the new qualcom scorpion processor that is under clocked to 800mhz because the graphics chipset was amazing and could handle more then any phone out there. So if a full root could be done then a over clock would be cool to see it run at its full 1.3 ghz that the scorpion processor is capable of. The only reason i would never get one is because its a gsm phone and tmobile in my area blows and at&t just sucks period with their plans and basing everything twards the inferior iphone.
Yeah in my opinion, besides the root on Vibrant, is the G2 lacking anything from it? I think overall, maybe 75% of all G2 user haven't had that GPS issues.. and that's what that update recently did, right? If not wrong.. and compare to screens, who here is a dedicated phtographer or so call-it that the screen has to be perfect, it works just fine.. for a the purpose of a phone is. I really think Nokia is the one that focus on resolution more than anyone else.. I think that when they make the phone they focus on features more than camera pixels.. more with what a phone can do and rather than what the screen or resolution can improve.. weird, if I think about it maybe.. but me saying

Well I will say I'm super impressed with the super amoled screen on the epic the one that was a bit over hype is the iphone 4 retna display. Screens don't sell phones hardware and functionality do and not many phones can compete with htc sence ui! Since the first hero showed up its been the benchmark for being very asteticly pleasing and very useful. I'm sure once you guys gain full root access you will love the g2's as much as everyone with a g1 did. I miss my g1 still even the epic is not the same the keyboard on the g1 IMO is the best to date on a phone period. Give the g2 achance we have all been waiting for it sice they announced the hero I'm sure it will take off and pack a punch in the android phone market. (Hopeing its not another nexus 1 fail)

[Q] Any new ways to root??

I Had a beautiful Rooted G2 that fell off my desk and screen quit working... Now I was sent a new G2 (Insurance pays) and I tried rooting... Well Visionary is a No Go, Rage.. No go, and no matter what I tried its not working... Any suggestions?? When using Visionary it hangs and thats it.. Rage just hangs.. And rebooting DOES NOT MATTER they just hang... I put in a different Hboot nothing, tried a PC10 .zip Wrong reboot.... Any suggestions?? I cant have all this freakin eat your battery Bloatware. It pisses me off and would love my custom rom back on. Again any suggestions PLEASE???
PS... psneuter does not work either.

if so, you're s.o.l. at this point. sorry.
Why is that?? What did they do to the system this time??
Patched the exploit that allowed us to root.. along with change the build.prop to read "2.3"
Nope theres no way to root gingerbread. It looks like your stuck because it seems like no one is working on it. I'm on my fifth replacement with gingerbread, I keep asking for one with froyo and they say it's coming but I get gingerbread every time, this really sucks I need CM7

I guess there's no downgrade hack for the G2 like these is for the Bell Mobility DZ? If not, then perhaps you can sell your LNIB G2, buy a secondhand DZ, root it, and have money left over. I paid $200 for an unlocked DZ in excellent condition from a local eBay seller, which is a heck of a lot better than the $500 the carriers want off-contract.

Don't let anyone take your money dude. At the moment there is no way possible to even root gingerbread on this device. You are just going to have to hold on and wait. Have you called T-mo? Last I heard, they were letting people trade in their gingerbread G2's for froyo ones, because gingerbread was never even supposed to go out on those devices.

Lol oh no no. nobody would get my money 'til i had a rooted phone. That trade bit sounds interesting though. Even if I bought my phone off craigslist and am on a non-data family plan? They might be biased against me lol
If you bought your phone off Craiglist it will show up in Tmo's "Device Model Warranty Tool" as "Warranty not verified." (Unless the phone had never been used before, then it should appear as a new device.) Unfortunately, that status will make it impossible for you to exchange your phone through Tmo, you may still be able to get support from HTC depending on the age of your device.
If you have the PHP insurance/warranty it's another matter, then you should be able to exchange the phone regardless of its age or origin.
(I'm a former Tmo rep btw)
The php insurance is nice. I've replaced a few phones, I just hate how Asurion verifies their authorized account users. They never see me as an auth. user!!
A few years back, it was no problem, but now they seem to be much more strick or something...
Sry bout my rant lol... maybe you can get an independent insurance plan and go from there
Goodluck.

Leaving EVO, hello ns4g

So after all this time using an EVO since ship date, Sprint and HTC blew it with this gb update. Getting a comparable device without losing my upgrade, was a huge plus for me to move on to this.
It wasn't the of root. It was the lack of testing, and caring about the users of this phone, the 30 second update that went on while I slept, the 2 replacements that randomly revolted every 3+hrs just everything I hope the ns4g is better.
Must say, its been a great run.
My wife has had 2 replacement evos in the past month due to broken usb port. I wish at this point they'd just offer a nexus
My camera is being retarded and after 2 or 3 pics my phone reboots. I'm hoping sprint will offer me a ns4g.

Are you using a stock Evo? If so, call and ask if they'll upgrade you. I don't think they're reading this and cross-referencing your username to your account.
When you call for a replacement, state that you are not physically able to make it to a sprint repair center: wheelchair bound, etc, whatever your excuse may be, as wrong as that seems, it's the only way to get them to MAIL the replacement to you, express that you've had the device replaced 1+ times, and that you spoke to a manager who told you, you were eligible for a like or comparable replacement, they will offer you the evo shift, ns4g, and all the other low-end devices.
This is up to you form here on.

They are so lame to make us go into the stores anyway. It's very annoying. however on my side... I've been lucky. never once have had an issue. my last phone I even changed out my own touch screen. :-D then when I got my evo. I got a hammer and killed my last phone. hahahha
haha, I wish. I've had nothing but issues out of my evo
I got some pretty bad light leaks under the home, back, and search buttons to where it looks like the metal around the bottom of the phone is white. I have heard you can get a replacement for light leakage but does or would this qualify?
who cares what this says anyways
sounds like some here have the new phone itch.. after the new phones come out all kinds of defects are found on our current phones..
ha ha.. I suffer from it..
Just tell them your phone randomly reboots lol.
Good luck with the Nexus. I have had two and sold them both. (traaded in my OG Evo.) The Nexus phones have all kinds of issues, including miserable battery life, bad radios causing dropped calls, taking 6 hours to charge the battery, flimsy plastic construction, etc.
I ended up with an Evo 3D, and so far, so good. It's nice to have a fast phone with a large screen, but somewhat more narrow than the original Evo.
Go to the Sprint site and see the Nexus user reviews vs. either of the Evos. It's no contest.
Good luck.
Thanks, and I always have 2 more evo's lol.

I do want a different phone since I can't root this one and I just got it like 3-4 weeks ago. So not so much a new phone just one that isn't locked. If the EVO gets root I would keep it but with all the rumors going around that it won't or it maybe October or never I don't want to wait 2 years to get a phone I can root.

[Q] Mytouch 4g power button doesn't work

I've been using this phone for about four months brand new back in July. I was using my phone just perfectly yesterday with my power fully fuctional. Then it seemed like the button got stuck without a click and limited use, when i pushed down really hard. Now it seems like it feels like it did normally but now it does't work. My phone died and i tried to power it back on and nothing happened. Please help!! ):
The phone is borked. Call t mobile. They should send you another one.
The power button isnt something you can work around. And you might be able to fix it if you cracked the phone open....but why void the warrenty when they will give you a replacement now?
Faulty Power button is apparently on their list of known issues with the mt4g. I had to replace mine as well over the summer.

My phone died and i tried to power it back on and nothing happened. Please help!! ):

You don't need to press it very hard..I have never had any problems with it.
My power button has been hard to push for a couple months and I finally decided to call in cuz my year is almost up. After being hassled and having to call three times, I'm somehow getting a replacement (this will be my 4th MT4G in a year) and also a new phone for shipping costs, $5.99.
I picked the Amaze, but I'm not certain on it and can trade it if I want. If you had to pick a new tmo phone right now, what would you get?
And also, call tmo and keep telling them you're not happy. Worked for me...

Just a few questions are you rooted, if you so what are you running. I had an issue where my home key stopped working,I just restored an old back up, an it worked after that. Try fixing permissions.
If I helped, give thanks, if you please.

The Amaze or Sensation are the direction I'd go. I'd probably steer toward the Sensation just because it's a little older and the rooting hacks have been found (not sure if they have for the Amaze yet) and because there's a CM7 available for it that's not perfect, but it's supposed to be good enough for a daily user.
I don't know how you pulled that off. I've had my MyTouch for 3 months and am already on my 4th one and they refuse to offer me anything but the 4GSlide, which I REALLY don't want with the thicker chassis and smaller screen. Plus I hate slidey keyboards.

They're getting there with the Amaze, no s-off but there's.ROMs and kernels...hopefully the dev scene grows.
I'm amazed it happened, too. I've been with tmo for like 12 years, but they also put the whole contract (5 lines) in a new 2 year, without telling me, ha. I think I told them about ten times I wasn't happy and that they needed to make me happy, so they finally did.

I just called on Friday... Offered me a sensation & I took it. Will be here Monday. I loved this phone but have touchscreen responsiveness issues. I figured I'd take the sensation & if I don't like it, they have a higher resale value than the glacier. Gonna miss these forums & AMAZING devs tho...

It might be a grounding issue for the screen, which is fixable. Are they making you send your mytouch 4G back?

Yes, I'm sending it back. This is my 4th or 5th phone in a year... I tried that grounding thing with the pin/foil, nothing seemed to work. I took the sensation figuring if I hate it, I could sell it for more or trade + cash for something I'm into... Naturally the steps I'm taking are: open box, root phone, enjoy.

Best of luck to you. Development is rocking and rolling for the sensation from the looks of the dev forum.

Thanks
Thanks but how many problems have u encountered so far????
Why go with either of them 2 devices? Specially the mt4g slide. The amaze is a great device. I'm probably one of the few that thinks it has one of the best cameras. I bought the amaze for my wife a year and few month ago. Only problems she encountered were creaking back cover and bad battery life. But that got fixed with juice defender and a bigger battery. Other than that the device is perfect.
But there's plenty newer devices out. You should rethink your choices.

Thanks but i am not a fan of this kind of sense rom ( http://img.talkandroid.com/uploads/2011/03/SenseGinger-216x360.jpg ). This is the type i want ( http://i1-linux.softpedia-static.com/screenshots/Moto-Mytouch-4G_1.jpeg )
Thats why i chose these two phones.
And Are there some defects you have seen with the mytouch 4g slide?? If there is please let me know.
Thanks Again.
My touch 4g slide
My fiancé has the mt4gs and loves it. He loves having the physical keyboard. He is still using the stock rom in gingerbread, as he never rooted it. The keyboard does make the phone a bit heavier, and you'll find that phone is somewhat of a brick after feeling a Samsung. My my touch 4g (non slide) is sorta heavy too though htc I guess just makes strong phones, or at least they did. I heard their new phone quality is lacking. But there are people who prefer their phones to have a good weight and not be too light, so it's not like the weight is necessarily a downfall.. His hasn't had any problems at all everything works great no defects. He mentioned Facebook force closes here and there, but I think that's just Facebook they always send out crappy buggy updates like that. He's had the phone well over a year with no problems at all. He upgraded from a Motorola cliq which was probably the worst android ever made.
Sounds like you can't really go wrong with either phones. I'd look at CPU speed and RAM and go with whichever has more because overall that's going to affect how long the phone will be useable. I don't know about the amaze, but I know the mt4gs specs are pretty good and an definitely keep up with ICS. Good luck!
The problem I find with the HTC slide phones is the ribbon cable eventually gives out from all the rubbing and then the screen no longer works. Happened to my 3g slide and also just repaired my sisters g2 ribbon cable. Also to me the keyboard phones are too thick.
