Should I return the phone ? hell yeah you should - Galaxy S II General

Hello everyone.
Today I found a brand new SGS2 on a supermarket and I took it
So I was wondering if they can track me down by GPS or something like that, if they lock the phone what's the worst that can happen ?
By the way before you judge me I didn't steal anything, like I said I found it.

If I were you I would see a lawyer and discuss this. In Germany you wouldn't have stolen it but would've been guilty of "Fundunterschlagung" which is also a crime and can and will be punished.
Tracking a phone is not that hard, there's the IMEI for example. In the very moment you use a sim card your carrier will know the IMEI of your device. So if the owner of the device reports this the police definitely can track down this very phone.
In addition you should never forget that most supermarkets have cameras.
I guess I will save you and me a discussion about the moral implications of such a behaviour.

Yeah, you're right.
I will give it tomorrow to my carrier maybe they will find in which name it is registered and give it back to the owner.
Thanks.

The answer is yes. This was not abandoned property. imho, You have a moral obligation and perhaps a legal obligation to return the phone.
Sent from my SCH-I800 using xda premium

You should have given it to the supermarket customer service or manager or even hand it into a police station, im assuming it wasn't on when you found it (otherwise the owner would no doubt try and call the phone to see if anyone had it)

This thread makes me sad...if i lost my phone id cry and hope that the person that found it would have the decency to answer my frantic calls or hand it in to have it returned to me. Do the decent thing.

I happen to be an emplyee at the supermarket and since I never used a SGS2 I thought I would have some fun with it.
But i'll return it for sure, it is even unlocked for all the carriers gosh!
Anyways thanks for the advice guys & the thread tags also. lololol

Seriously? If they find out you did that then you may well lose your job. As an employee your actions are not seen in the same light as a customer.
Look at the call log and call someone who's on there frequently. Tell them you have the phone and arrange to get it back to the owner. You'll make someone very happy and you'll save yourself a potentially large amount of trouble

Sad franekz

Hi guys.
It always makes me feeling sad when I read or hear such questions. Unfortunately we live in society where gadgets are more important than morality and conscience.
People - dont be so selfish.
Sorry for - off topic

Google the difference between stealing and finding!
At least he is being decent enough to give it back!
Deloxic i know you have the best phone in hand right now and you dont feel like giving it back , but trust me the happiness and joy you'll get after seeing the owners face when he gets his 650$ phone is worthed more than this phone.
Return it and you'll feel so very good

You'll feel much better when you do the right thing rather than having the best phone in the world and thinking a person out there worked with their blood and sweat to buy that phone is missing his/her precious baby.. Conscience can really bother ya sometimes, wait, all the time.. I'm glad people today still do the right thing

Keep it i say..Hug it, take it to bed with you and then once you are finished throw it out of the window...
Of course return it. Not only you feel good when you see the owner's face thanking you and being re united with their handset but also you might get a little reward...But that is not the point you should of just gave it to your supervisor as that would of been the decent thing to do...
Imagine if the supervisor said "ok i will return it" and kept it for himself
Either way glad you are doing the right thing

CWM 5 issue
Someone has problems with custom rom and CWM 5?

Be a nice guy and just try to track down the owner. Just check which Google account the phone syncs with and fire up an email.
If you've switched your own SIM into the phone, it's very likely the phone has sent a text message to a number the owner set up the moment you fired it back up. It's also fairly easy to track the phone via GPS, check call logs and wipe the phone remotely. The service provider can also track IMEI numbers on phones registered on their network.
More importantly, make the real owners day and let the poor guy have his precious phone back!

So you ordered a phone, and initially thought it never came. Then you called and said, "Hey, where's that phone?" They said, "Sorry. We'll send another one."
Now you are basically saying, "Thanks AT&T for being so helpful and sending me a replacement phone. Now that you were so helpful, I will keep both phones and really give you the shaft for being honest."
Having two phones, you now wonder if you can get in trouble. Well, let me put it this way: if AT&T was to find out you have both phones, they might think you lied to them in an attempt to steal a phone from them. Most people and most businesses wouldn't respond too well to this.
The ethical thing to do is exactly what your question asks when reading between the lines: Should I keep what doesn't belong to me?
If you have to ask, you probably already know the answer.
Whatever...I worked for at&t for a year...nothing ethical about that company. I say keep it and be happy.
Answer is yes they could find out whos SIM is in the phone with that IMEI... Unless you use that program floating around and change the IMEI haha.

Strange, because you've offered to sell this phone to another member here already. You might want to get your story straight before Mark comes knocking on your door looking for his "kickback".
Isn't that like stealing more than half a thousand dollars?
I mean, Don't get me wrong, but you could let them know you moved, so they can send the phone to the right place.

You're probably right. But at the same time, is it worth the trouble and worry? Even if AT&T isn't ethical, does that mean you shouldn't? It's all about how you want to live your life.

Most stupid S2 owner ever?...

I lost my first one 3 days after receiving it... managed to get money for a replacement via house insurance and then lost my new one.. seriously... imagine how bad I feel.

Big Brother Lives In CA & Coming to A State Near You

First let me start off by saying I'm a noob, a virgo, and like taking long walks on the beach LOL. I have been lurking around for the past couple of months and have learned a lot from the great people that like to help and share information. This is indeed a great community of people. This is my first post so if it seems long winded I apologize. Now my reason for my thread title. I live in Phoenix AZ (I know it's a dry heat), I was watching the news tonight and they did a story on the search of cell phones by the police. It seems that in California if you get stopped for anything, traffic ticket, jay walking, ect. and your cell phone is within arms length of you, the officer can ask for your phone and can search through it no search warrant needed! Yes that means anything and everything that is on your phone is free game (I find that a little strange since last year a husband went to court over accessing his wife's email and reading it.) But as the story was told California Supreme court upheld the ruling which again states that any person who comes in contact with a law enforcement officer can have their cell phone "looked at". This means call history, web sites visited, your phone book, and any and all information that is stored on your device. The only catch is that the device has to be within arms reach of the person. I am not a criminal, never even had a traffic ticket, but the thought of someone going through my phone drives me crazy. I keep my phone locked with a passcode, so would that mean that I would have to unlock my device for them to snoop through it? Anyway I found this interesting and I thought that I would share it with anyone who cares. My question is, of all of the talent that is in this community, has there ever been an app made like a "kill all pill", something that with just the touch of a button your device would be reset to factory settings and/or scrub the sd card? Just a thought. Once again thank you for allowing me to gain more knowledge of my device and to share in the community. Keep up the great work!

*I'm assuming this is similar to the 'plug n' pull' (ya like that?) that was mentioned before. If all it takes is smashing the phone to ****, well, I'd do it in a heartbeat. If I just had pr0n on my phone I wouldn't even care. But that never touches my phone. Nor my computer; felt the need to add that. I'm talking serious business. Not that 'phone tapping' couldn't be possible (yes, it can happen to us all) but anything to shut an effort down. I'd even smash my rooted device and give up a chance of rooted glory for all the bull**** that could come of it. I hate cops. I've had some horrible experiences with them in the past. I'm not a 'blah blah f*ck you' to the face anymore, but I don't play that ****. You can instantly tell when a cop is on the push, and usually it is because you are in a bad situation. But some trivial ****? Nah, I don't, and won't, play that.

I don't think it works like that, provided this was similar to the talk before ... your 'ish' gets plugged in and by some 'miracle super duper government cop pull' they jack any and everything off your phone.
I'd like some clarification though. I haven't seen a link, but this sounds pretty similar to the talk before.

I suppose you can wipe the phone but, as we all know, the only way to truly destroy data is acid.
Right. If I am remembering correctly it was mentioned as such before. That's what I was saying. I wouldn't be surprised if this was being considered in Illinois. I should make a point of turning my phone off / removing the card everytime we / I get pulled over. Swallow the card if it appears suspect and smash the phone. I'd totally get tasered over as much.*

Just another reason for me to hate living in Cali. I must have missed the report but I remember about a month or so ago some state in the north eastern part of the us displayed a new device just for cell phones that police were beginning to use. Basically it comes with universal plug or what ever and totally scans phone in a matter of seconds. All contents are then stored in said device for further review. files included absolutely everything! Pictures, videos, internet history/cache, emails, call history etc. Welcome to socialism! California is leading the way.

Police officers can ask for lots of things. You don't have to give it to them. If an officers asks if he can look in your trunk you can say no, if they ask to come into your house you can say no, if they ask you anything you can remain silent. So if you have something on your phone that you don't want the police to see, just say no when they ask if they can look at it.
I have seen police go to apartments where the neighbor reported that someone was smoking pot. They can smell the pot, but if no one answers the door, or the person who answers does not let them in they can't take any further action.

While I won't dispute Cali's socialist leanings, this is NOT evidence of it. Evidense of Fascism? Sure is! Socialism? No. There are big differences between communism and socialsim, and both can be facist...but so can democracy. Fascism is the real evil. Socialism and communism are only theoretical evils that tend to die off as time progresses (though either one work very well in small communities. Funny thing: almost any humane fiscal system can work, and work well, on a small scale...it is when one starts dealing with larger societies that the sh1t hits the fan). But this is all far more political than is allowed.

Try and trace the owner or hand it in would be a good start.
Trace the owner, and if you cannot find them, hand it in to the nearest police station to where you found it.
Alternatively contact the carrier who can trace the sim number or mobile number of the phone and find the owner.
keep it, if you drop yours you have a spare one ,
unless the owner calls the phone. than you can give it back >.>
If you dont hand it in you will probably find the IMEI gets blocked by the carrier when it gets reported missing, so wont be of much use as a phone anyway.
Hand it in, if it was your phone I am sure you would wish for the same.
shouldn't be too hard to trace the owner, so do it.
If you can turn WiFi and gps on and leave the phone powered on (Samsung dive) else turn it in.
Step 1: Check the call log and call one of the numbers the person dials often. That's sure to be a friend/family member of the person.
Step 2: Tell them you found the phone and let them put you in touch with the owner.
Step 3: Return the phone to its rightful owner.
Step 4: Enjoy the boost in Karma.
The owner uses Samsung Dive and is tracking you right now. It's a guy, he's 6'4," 250lbs, and read this thread on XDA. Now what are you going to do
I don't understand the question. Is that just me?
There's only 1 thing to do, and that's ring someone (as suggested above) and return it to its rightful owner.
Edit: Alternatively, check the email address of the owner and get in touch with them that way.

What ever you do, never hand it to the police. it will end with them. This should be the last option If all the others don't work. Better it ends with the rightful owner as first option or you as last but one option.
What would you do if you found 5000 dollars on the floor? Hand it to the police? If you can't trace it, they can't.

I agree with OrionCarl in this case. Just because you find something doesn't mean it doesn't belong to someone else. Keeping it when you know that it does is the equivalent of stealing it.

I got the phone but then decided my iPhone 5 would do and i'd send it back. So I cancelled the contract and they've sent me a returns bag.
Inquisitive a while ago, I just decided tol have a play around with it and now wish I hadn't cancelled.
Was wondering if I contacted them could I uncancel or simply send it back and start again.
and your point is?

Your choosing an iPhone over this superb phone, that in itself is ludicrous sorry to be so blunt but seriously cannot see the sense in that.

Keep it otherwise whenever you see someone with a One you'll wish you kept your One.

iPhone is something else. You can't compare these two. No need of pointless hate against it.

Just phone EE again say you changed your mind, you decided to stay with them, they would be more than happy to let you stay. I don't see why there would be any problem. Very likely they would let you keep the phone then just start a new contract, cos technically only until you returned the phone your contract is fully stopped, they may be able to reverse it at this stage.

Thanks a lot for your help, I'll give them a bell. Think i'll put it on charge. :
Haha, this is hilarious. Go on to xda to ask whether you can change your mind about cancelling a contract (or not) with EE?
Call me old fashioned, but I would be asking EE, not XDA. Maybe that's just too much common sense.

You bet your life you can't compare the two, the HTC One is far far better.

So the OP starts a new thread saying he is staying with his iPhone 5.
What exactly is the point of this thread, other than the OP simply trolling HTC forums?

No he started a thread saying he ordered the ONE and then before getting it he changed his mind thinking he would be ok with the iphone 5 so he calls in and has them cancel the new contract and send him a return kit. He then gets the ONE and being a phone junkie like all of us on XDA he HAS to play with and realizes that he loves the ONE and does not want to use his iphone 5 anymore but as he said he already called in to cancel so what does he do??? Which has been answered so next time you wish to bash someone or talk crap maybe sharpen up on your reading comprehension skills.
Don't really think OP is trying to be a troll or anything.. i think he/she is just confused and didn't know how awesome of a phone it was till he/she used it..
Which is what you suppose to do with any new phone, you read up on it, find features you like, buy it, get used to it.. decided should you keep it..
Not order a phone, decide to return it.. then want to use it and realize its a great phone

I agree but I am also a phone nut and have done crazier things in my time. He got caught up in the hype then doubted the hype (who can blame him) and then realized the hype was real. Sounds a little like all of us :silly:

That sums up half of the post here about a new phone :good:
Before that ends in flamewars out of misunderstandings, I close this now. All is discussed I think.
