[Q]Whitelevels and screen sharpness

I have only seen 4 galaxy tab 7.7's so far and I noticed all 4 of them really have bad white levels as compared to my galaxy note, disabled the auto power saving and there is a difference in white levels but its still not even close to the galaxy note at the same brightness level. Even at brightness 25% on the note the vs 100% on the tab 7.7shows 'dimmer'whites. This is not a rant but I'm just asking if the screens are calibrated that way or should I keep looking?
Also I noticed that the mdine engine oon the tab provides oversharpening to a lot of my photos and its so obvious and makes the images look bd, supercurio has the same findings.

It is a pretty big screen so it may be they limited the brightnes to save battery power. While the claim is that OLED takes less power than LCD that is not always true. When displaying white, OLED tech uses like 4X as much power as LCD. The power saving comes in when displaying images with medium to darker colors.
What is the "mdine engine"? Is this something that can be bypassed by using a different picture viewing app?
It is amazing how Samsung seems to always add some crappy image "enhancement" like DnIE or such crap. Why can't they just leave our images alone, as we meant them to be? It is freakin' OLED man. You don't need any contrast or sharpness enhancement you knuckleheads! OLED by nature is sharp and has great contrast! Duh!

I don't know. My 7.7 is super bright, sharp and with way warmer colors than my Note.

I'm thinking the samr thing that samsung might ne limiting how bright the whites can go duebto the screen size but based on what I've seen on samoleds some screens juat put out better white levels, not really brighter but whiter.
For the mdine its running system wide.

The samoled plus tends to have more warmer colors than the samoled, is the whites on your tab 7.7 'whiter' than on the note at the same brightness level?

Yes I believe so, Supercurio knows more about that stuff.

Perhaps one of the other reason that the 7.7's screen isn't quite as bright, apart from the obvious power saving reasons, is an effort to possibly reduce the OLED degradation (burn-in) effect.
Either way, although I certainly noticed out of the box that my 7.7 wasn't as bright as my Note (or even my GS2 for that matter!), I was never really bothered by it because (especially when you use movie mode) the colour reproduction is very accurate, and paired up with the contrast levels, it's still fantastic!
I guess, to me, white doesn't necessarily mean I need to put on a pair of sunglasses while looking at my screen lol!

I just wanted to know if the norm has lower white levels, what bothers me more is added sharpening on some images.

I havent but id imagine thats gonna give a yellowish cast on the entire screen. I didnt get the tab yet as the store units I tried had very obvious screen problems. Gonna wait for a the next batch to arrive.

Yellowish? Not at all! At least not with my unit anyway. Sure it makes the screen generally warmer in colour, but IMO, more than anything, it makes the colours look more accurate and natural.
Give it a try! You never know until you do...

Since when was it wrong to ask for more product information on what is the norm, if you've got nothing to contribute stay away instead of starting a flamebait.

Well ever since the Galaxy S changing the color mode to movie mode gives a yellowish cast, this is probably dependent on the calibration on the screen we get in the first place. I saw a friend's Tab7.7 the other day and his white levels were really brighter than my Galaxy Note. FWIW, its still a luck of the draw when it comes to color calibration on the screen. But thanks for that tip, when I'll purchase the Tab I'll make sure to also check out movie mode and see if it hits my requirements.

i have mine set to vibrant... rather like it like that.
it's just a shame it's SOOOO darn bright!
i cant use it t night!
even with screenfilter and other apps... no worky on amoled

Very bright noticed the same with the Note ,
Nexus was somewhat easier on the eyes at night,
But probably like you I like a very dim screen at night.
When the brightness is turned all the way down on the 7.7,
is any banding or other issues seen like many report on the Note?
Blacks are black I'm sure but how are greys that are near black.
On the Nexus they were fine, but on the Notes I seen they could have been darker?

I do not believe a Note with a good screen exists

Pfffff. Tests with Samsung handselected devices. Or do you think that Samsung will send defectiv devices to the testers?

and: no dark blotches on a complete black picture in a dark room? (you have to see whole screen lightly lit (amoled cant go completely black), and let your eyes accommodate to the darkness!

SGN sucks on screen quality, its own spen scratch the "good" screen... really disappointed.

I honestly havent went out of my way to find any issues with the screen.
The videos I have watched all look awesome..I did notice on some dark images there was some banding or whatever its called but thats all I can tell..
I'm not that great with colors so I may not notice as much but it looks great to me so far.

Mine is fine with some tweaks. Primarily -40% contrast. I can see down to '2' on that test image. I also notice little or no blotchiness in dark videos any more, although I did before adjustment.
It's a software issue IMO.

I share the same sentiment as no one with a 'perfect screen' has shared it. The best I've seen is one w/o any black clipping what so ever since his gamma test result is similar to a Galaxy S2 but I do see a few visible horizontal lines on a grey screen. Its not perfect but its with in specifications aside from the lines.

To the unwise it may seem incorrect since they are only looking at the smaller picture and dont really have a clue on what this 'objective' test is for, let me give a real life example:
Using the Kindle application for reading ebooks gives you the option to use a black background now some screens have very visible blotches even if there is a text on the screen and they are become unoticeable when there is a text above them, this of course matters to someone who reads ebooks in their bedrooms w/o any external light source or to someone who watches movies like me. You see if we ask someone to open kindle and load up something and do this and do that, it makes the 'testing' more subjective rather than just test it in a pitch black room with a black image displayed.
These tests may sound silly to others but its the best way to get an objective result, remember people theres a difference between 'its not there' and 'i dont notice it with normal usage'.
here is an example that hopefully may enlighten you people with self proclaimed perfect screens so you may understand why its so difficult for others to accept such screen exists because with several replacements they havent seen one yet and people always claim that defects are the extreme minority, if its true then no one should need more than 2 replacements to get these perfect screens, correct?
It is also common for others to be dismissive of any screen related issues, you can be dismissive all you want provided you show an objective result. till then your screen is just as flawed as everyone else.

Are those dark rings one of the issues that everyone is complaining about? If so, I'll have to look at my unit, but I suppose I've just been extremely lucky. I have yet to notice any issues. That's not to say there aren't any issues with my device (possibly), if I look really hard, in very specific conditions

I do not have any black blotches or whatever.
One of the issue I have is the gray screen. It has somesort of texture on it but it's tolerable since it looks like a texturized wallpaper. No problems with playing videos at all, everything looks crisp and clear. So far I am enjoying it.
Also, another issue is the camera. When I am around those long florescent lights, there seems to be some wavy things on my screen. Even on video. I guess I got to avoid those lights in taking pictures. Haha.

That Image i used came from the Tab7.7 forums which shows the issue and practical scenario at the same time. Its an example of the darker blotches in blacks, not really the main issue on the Galaxy Note but one of the many possible yet rare issue.
On my end, my first screen had some blotches but they were not visible when I watch a movie or read an ebook from the kindle app, the 2nd screen I had did have a home button sized like blotch at the bottom which was visible when reading ebooks unless a text is close to it, in movies/shows it is only visible when the entire screen goes black.

after seeing your picture, i want to test my note. i use a small chamber without a window and close the door, so its absolute dark in there. i take a picture from the screen of my note while using kindle with background set to black. i use my lumix dmc-fx01 digicam to take the picture. am i just lucky with the screen of my note, or did i something worng while testing?

Once again, I guess I have been extremely lucky with both my Note and my 7.7, because I have yet to notice any of these issues with either

Black clipping and banding = software. Therefore, irrelevant from a hardware perspective.
The splotches that you see in the most dark of conditions are the artifacts of the manufacturing process. Under normal 0% brightness (without using additional apps like screen adjuster) you will not be able to see these things assuming you've got a good screen.
The only things you need to look out for is color unevenness and brightness unevenness and in some cases, the manufacturing process is so prominent that it seeps into the normal brightness (0% and up range) and it is visible.
The fastest way to tell if there is something wrong is to turn off all auto-lcd power management, set the brightness to 0%, and to simply pull down the notification menu and view it in a dark place. That'll reveal most of the problems that you might find in a day to day situation. If you see nothing there and the screen looks crisp, don't bother looking for more. They will not appear in normal real-world situations.

No blotches on mine. Very happy with the quality. The color profile seems nicer than on my i9100. The only screen I had with noticeable blotches (only seen at full darkness) was on my T989.
So ya, very happy with my Note's screen. White International N7000

The witch hunt started with the original sgs and continues with the note.
Im on my second note plus a screen replacement and screens are flawless. Yes there is somme banding on all of amoled screens. Its partially software because running ics alpha build, most of the banding is gone.

Screen Adjuster

Guyz I bought a galaxy note last week...just out of the box i saw a yellowish tint all over the display basicaly from the bottom left.....
so i got an app screen adjuster
i installed then adjusted the blue at +5 and now 90% of the yellowish tint is gone..
soo i have to ask is it safe to use this app????

I use it to lower the contract to -40 as it fixes some of the black rendering issues. I also set the overall brightness down to 75% as it is just set too bright (I turn it off when outside).
I have never fiddled with the colour as my colour renders perfectly. I agree that if it is not rendering correctly, send it back for a replacement. It will likely only get worse.

interesting how it helps you to solve some black rendering issues, but not at all for me.

Yeah its awesome but lags my ICS ROM down

its awesome app ... removes black blocks completely on videos .... is it factory issue with my note .. as i think it should work correctly be default .... isnt it ? ....

For sure is a very good and safe app but better now that is brand new it s better to take it back....

I have now bought 4 Notes for myself and my family members (Yeah I know, 4 people in family with Note ). My personal one manufactured in October and those bought recently (3 of them, all made in January 2012) have different colour reproduction.
The new ones have slightly warmer colours when you look dead on (with slight shift to blue when you look at it from bottom at extreme angles which is to be expected).
But straight on, the new Note has colour reproduction similar to my Galaxy Nexus. ITs slightly warm. Its definitely not the colour calibration as it remains same regardless the ROM I use. Its definitely not like traditional SAMOLED blueish display like my old Note or SGS2 which I had before that.
All 3 which are manufactured in Jan 2012 have same colours. All 3 bought from different stores few days apart. But I dont think its bad thing. It actually little warmer like Nexus and is more closer to real life colours. I know that many people prefer artificial looking, eye popping SAMOLED colours, but I am definitely not complaining.

Black colour blocking is universal as far as I know. All of the Notes I have seen have it with hardware accelerated video playback. Using software decoding using players like MX video player or MoboPlayer or BSPlayer solves the issue for now and there is already work under way to fix this issue. I dont think you need to return your phone for this as new one will most likely have same issue.
What I mentioned was regarding general colour reproduction of the screen. The new Notes have slightly warmer colours everywhere. Be it in home screen, browser, gallery or video.

No, it's not faulty. Color banding or black blocks are just artifacts introduced by developers or the video encoding process for the most part - the issue is generally not apparent on TFT display types since the LCD layer isn't able to block 100% of the light to show you a true 'black' pixel.
Good dithering can hide the problem somewhat, but on OLED displays it's more difficult since they are far better with contrast.
You could look at it one of two ways...
You have a superior display technology that the world just needs to catch up with.
Or you have a worse screen because it doesn't hide what other display types are incapable of rendering.
Take your pick : )

Thats a relief ... i was also thinking the same thing as , other colors looks quite nice on my note ... only issue is the blocky blacks which on less resolution videos are more visible .... however i was able to solve the issue using screen adjuster app by setting contrast to 55% ... at that it displays no blocky blacks at all ... just the screen gets an overlay of grey for pure blacks..... i can live with it ...

Nexus Screen quality at high brightness

Hi,
So I opened my nexus 4 today. From what I had seen on YouTube and read was that the screen was superior to galaxy nexus. It is from every angle but I do have a question about its quality on medium to high brightness.
On medium to high brightness I can make out vertical lines of pixels, I suppose, like on my 1366*768 15.6" laptop. I think that there is something wrong because any colored background including the virtual buttons have vertical lines that I can distinguish at mid to high brightness. Even the white block or discs wallpaper can have these lines. Can someone please confirm or deny these vertical lines? Is this the screen technology or just this specific phone that I received?
I have nexus 7 and this has been perfect in every sense. Its not as high resolution as nexus 4 but the pixels are a result of both horizontal and vertical lines colliding resulting in no highly visible vertical lines.

I am not seeing anything out of the ordinary on the two wallpapers you mentioned at max.

Yeah, I didn't know the exact term for this but it does happen. Even on whites not just background or menu. So is it almost every n4 or just a few unlucky ones because I am trying to figure out what I should do next.

It happens at medium to high brightness...Just put the brightness at high and then close in a little bit to the screen and your will notice that on those 2 backgrounds specifically the discs one. Also another way is to open up settings and then look at settings logo on the top left and you can see the blue part with vertical lines.

Again... Not seeing this. What happens if you reboot your device. Do you see it right away?

Yeah. It might takes it a few seconds but those vertical lines are so obvious. How are you not seeing them

Look the gradient in setting very hardly and you will see them. But Nothing on white,or collored wallpaper. Just on this gradient and on grey wall paper.

So many people not seeing it. Maybe it was a bad unit. I don't know how to explain it but once again I will try. When you turn up brightness all the way up the screen is bright but the way the pixels are packed they look like bunch of lines put together.
Think, shredded paper put together again to make a piece of paper. Open up a page of blue background and it should be apparent unless mine was truly a bad unit. If even then no one sees that effect maybe it was the unit that I got.
Also I'm not talking about the settings gray background lines. That'd just the wallpaper which looks like 8 bit that someone mentioned. Looks the same on nexus 7.

Guys, this is an issue with the wallpaper itself, not the phone. Please close these threads.
The pictures and wallpapers you see this on are simply not rendered for the high resolution
and dynamic range of the Nexus4 screen.
The Nexus4 screen is much better than what the picture was drawn on.

You will not see this if you're watching something like the Transformer's movie. I believe what Minddroid said is right. It is an artifact of the crappy image used in the settings screen.
Take a screenshot and put the screenshot on any cheap TN panel monitor and you'll see the same thing (though it is not as obvious because the monitor is a TN. If you have an IPS, it'll be more pronounced. Try displaying the image on an iPhone 5 screen and you'll likely see the same thing)
I initially thought I had problems with my display due to there being gradients on the bubble live wallpaper...but when I took a screenshot and put it on my TN monitor, lo and behold, I see the same thing.
They need to move to high-resolution images....but they won't because majority of android owners are still on low-end phones. Lol.

I see a white banding from top to bottom, size about the ON/OFF sliding button in the Setting screen, and in the position of those buttons also. I think this is a defect but it's normal as many Nex4 suffered this issue. Only noticeable when brightness is 100%

I don't have this issue, I think you should RMA your device.

Actually I have thse line, but i see them only at high brightness or special grey wallpaper or color. it's not very powerfull but not as important as headphone issue or speaker noise.
I'm guessing that a lot of people have these line but not seeing them.

RMA is impossible when you buy an US version and you're in Vietnam. Waiting too long for the device and got some sort of imperfect product Anw, I love it, and I think most of people don't notice these lines

It's definitely not a wallpaper issue, I compare my nexus 4 to a ipad with same wallpaper at max brigthness, you can make out these vertical line on the nexus 4 but nothing on the iPad, you can't really see it unless you look for it. Most of you will say don't look for it, well what is seen cannot be unseen. Also nexus 4 probably have the worst IPS Display ever, vertical line, screen flickering, gamma issue, somewhat washout color compare to other IPS display, and worst viewing angle then other IPS display. Don't get me wrong, it's still very good, but not great like people make it out to be.

Yeah, that why iProducts are more expensive than the others. My display has 1 band of vertical lines that are a little bit brighter than the others, some kind of backlit issue, but never mind as they are only clearly visible on 100% brightness.

Screen smearing on galaxy S5's as well

Well i just noticed the dreaded screen smearing/purple haze on my new note 3 when i had the brightness turned all the way down, so i decided to check my new S5 and guess what its there too!
FU samsung how can they not pick up on this???
Yes there are fixes but it shouldn't be happening in the first place if you want to test yours out download the pic below, set brightness to 0 and zoom in on the pic and you will notice pink/purple smearing between the black and grey colours when moving the pic around.
Hmm wonder why they made all the menu bars green? now you know.

You need to have the screen brightness all the way down and make sure your looking real closely.
Out of the S4, note 3 and the s5 Samsung has seemed to make it the less noticeable on the S5.

What you could be seeing is the after image of the screen. You're seeing pink shade because of the way RGB is showing the color grey. You're seeing smearing because you could be moving the image around quite fast and the display is not fast enough to trail your fingers.

I followed your instructions and could see nothing that you are speaking of.
I have also previously owned a Note 3 and did not experience any "purple smearing" either.
In my opinion you are grossly overreacting.

Have you read through THIS THREAD on it happening on the Note 3?

This is true exaxtly the same and really annoing when i want to use the phone at night how can i fix it

I started the "infamous" thread over a year ago http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252445
Despite some thinking it was a software issue, it's simply a hardware issue with the panel.
The smearing occurs due to the native refresh times of the panel when going from completely off to dark shades, I.e black to greys etc.
The reason it wasn't an issue on older amoled screens was that the pixels were not completely off when displaying black, which is why in a dark room you could see a glow to blacks and also the "infamous streaks and blobs".
On the newer samsung amoled screens black is completely black, the pixels are not illuminated.
Samsung are just using cheap panels.
I spent a lot of money on an oled samsung tv there was the same issue. Putting a film on like sin city would highlight it. I returned the tv.

^S5 is the latest, so it's definitely new. So, was it really the panel?

Or you have bad vison. Just put ur brightnes to lowest and enter a dark roon and you will see it

Ok lets be realistic, the people saying their S5's are not doing it are ether one of 2 things,....
1. Plain stupid and don't know how to adjust their phones display to reproduce the smearing, example: "homer285 What application requires one to view a dark grey image at 0 brightness zoomed in at 100%?"
2. or in denial and don't want to believe their perfect s5's could have such a flaw.
Because all S5s and note 3s for that matter are all shipped with the same display hardware tech, and no you don't have some super special s5 that has different hardware from everyone else cause your awesome .
Now saying that there are fixes for the problem, one can use a screen colour adjuster to keep the "off black pixils" turned slightly on witch helps big time but kills ur battery dead.

Not black on whole screen, but you may see pure black parts when you watch videos that are not on HD scale. Also, around 95% of movies have at least one dark or low-light scene.

Most of us are neither of those two. Just because you experienced it, it doesn't mean that everyone has. Phones are not made in a single batch/production date. It's impossible to produce millions of S5 in a single day anyway. All products sold internationally have the so-called batch date/number to trace possible problems. My previous S3 have the black blotches when screen is dark and viewed under very low light, but my friend's has none. Now, my S5 doesn't have any screen problems.

I can confirm this too on my SM-G900F 16GB model... The Note 2 and S3 i owned didn't have this, but the S4 does and now the S5 also....
When having a black background (and lowered brightness) you'll notice it when swiping through the homescreen pages.
I don't know what causes this but i doubt it can't be fixed, yet Samsung continuous playing it their own way by ignoring the problem (the 'anti-smearing' update they once released was a joke)

This should only be a problem at night or in low light environments(typically when screen brightness is very low). I'm pretty sure it's a hardware limitation of Pentile AMOLED screens with the diamond sub pixel matrix, and thus affects all GS5's at low/very low brightness levels.
I've suggested this a couple of times on here, I'll say it again: 1.Change the screen mode to Cinema or Pro Photo.
2. (More importantly) Download Lux(free) and change the White Balance to Fluorescent. This slightly tints the blacks, and greatly reduces the smearing effect.

The S3 had a PenTile AMOLED screen and it wasn't affected by this. AFAIK it's due to the Diamond Pixel layout Samsung uses on the latter Galaxy series.

wow, pathetic. I hate all the BS threads about how samsung screwed us on the screen. Basically, by saying to turn down the screen all the way down and looking closely, in a dark room, you are asking somebody to look for a problem that never happens in a real world scenario anyways? WTF is up with all the people looking for problems in technology? Honestly, why in tha hell do people always try to find the tiniest this and the smallest that in every piece of tech they own and then bash the constructor for it, things that in the first place only appear in VERY SPECIFIC SCENARIOS THAT YOU NEVER ENCOUNTER IN REAL LIFE?
