Noob smartphone owner, many questions...HELP! - Galaxy S II General

hi guys,
I've been using hard-keyboard phones for the last 10 years or so. I've now got a Samsung galaxy s2 with Orange and i have a few problems which I'm hoping you guys can help me with.
1. The touch screen is extremely sensitive, so is there a way of reducing this?
2. Can you recommend a case/cover:-
a. which is not too expensive
b. can also protect the actual touch screen
c. makes the phone more thicker and easier to hold
Thank You

1. That's the point.
2. Check the accesories subforum. I've got a 2$ TPU case + screen protector. It's enough if you don't drop it

thanks TheSaw.
Even if it is made to be sensitive, not every person is the same, so surely just like people want a screen to be more sensitive, you'll get people wanting a screen to be less sensitive?
The accessories subforum is for USA and i live in the UK..any names or recommendations?

Yeah this should be in the Q&A or accessories sub forums really.. But regardless, Check Ebay for the Wave case.. comes in a range of colours, is sturdy and robust, makes the phone just a bit more bulky and substantial in the hand and is also ridged in quite a good way for a secure grip. Normally comes with a free screen protector too- the one I got with mine fits well and has endured since the phone's release date - I keep it in my pocket so expected to have to replace it before now.
Applying a screen protector will also reduce sensitivity although the decrease may be negligible... but if you can find a super-cheap nasty one I'm sure it will decrease performance more notably.

You could see if this thread helps.

Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App

thank you very much for your advice guys.
@ propergood - i love the wave case...its cheap and seems to do the job...main issue is scratch to screen or phone. as you can understand, a person whom has used a hard-keyboard phone for years, its way too sensitive, so i think i'd be okay with less sensitive. If i bought 2 screen protectors, could i double them by sticking one on top of the other, to make it more thicker, i.e. less sensitive?
@ aceofclubs - that app simply calibrates the screen, right? If so, then i'm not looking for that...i'm wanting an app which allows me to adjust how sensitive the screen response should be...is there such an app?
Also guys, if i rooted my samsung s2, would i be able to backup my original Orange/Samsung FW? And would Orange find out? I don't want to void the warranty.

I think it's underestimated how resilient these phones are to be honest...
While it probably would further reduce sensitivity I wouldn't advise trying to double layer screen protectors... at least not without limitless patience and about 10 protectors to try/retry with.
The bezel around the wave case does enough for me to keep the screen off surfaces when laid face down.. If you want full front coverage you'd need to get a flip style case or holster, which personally I find to be impractical, and my feeling is that these type of cases don't really provide full protection from direct pinpoint pressure on the screen area anyway. (I had a hard holster for my old blackberry, screen cracked anyway as I leaned over a rail a bit too hard...)
If you happen to want a belt clip type thing though this looks an interesting alternative...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RUBBERIZE...Accessories&hash=item519b9751f4#ht_5575wt_943

the belt clip case is great, but its not protect the front screen and when i say protecting, i mean from scratches or pressure.
so i assume you also have an s2? if so, then what app do you use to secure the phone? i want to do online banking and want a safe protection...i.e. it should be extremely hard for someone to break into the phone if they get hold of it.

Cases

Am i the only one who thinks all cases are rubbish, the device is perfect size wise but not safe to use everyday in its undressed condition as i dont want to damage the screen. Screen protectors i have tried are crap to fit and look awful on with air bubbles ever where. Cases make the device too bulky and hard to use, HP have the best solution with the plastic flip screen that goes over the top of the screen like the 6500 series so you dont get marks all over the screen when using the phone and it protects the unit when its in your pocket without taking up much space, why cant we have one of those on this device it would be the perfect solution
You can't have it all
The five hundred euro I paid for the Wizard does not come by easy and thats why I use the case to protect my investment.
manufacture one, or have one manufactured
There's a small indentation around the screen where a very thing plastic protector could fit. Or you could put it against the screen if you're careful enough not to let anything get inbetween :> Problem is, where would you make it hinge - and where would you attach/clip the hinge to the wizard? I'm not really spotting any convenient place to do so (forget about the antenna / anything at the back - remember that the screen slides out from the bottom area with the keyboard). Can't clip it over the top area, as you'll obscure the buttons, the speaker and the LEDs (though you could keep an eopening for the last two, you can't really have an opening for the keys as that would make the construction very fragile).

Recommended Prophet cases?

Which case for the Prophet would you recommend?
My main criteria are:
- Screen protection
- As slim as possible
- Leather (desired)
- Cheap
Any advice is greatly appreciated.[/list]
the slimest there is... you can't use the touchscreen unfortunatly (or am I wrong maybe?)
anyway I havn't seen a leather case that wouldn't make a brick out of a prophet. I find it strange - you can quite comfortably put a prophet in your pocket, wich makes it very portable, but you can't have a case that doesn't spoil it.
You might find the following case suitable. I believe it adds the least volume to the unit given that it is conformal and very thin. (There might be something better, but I'm not aware of it.)
http://www.ebcases.com/Detail.bok?no=3331
There is also the possibility to customize the case as well for a fee. Thus one can ask the supplier to minimize thickness rather than providing the maximal protection to the unit.
After much pondering I came to the conclusion that having no case was best. It keeps the prophets small foot print and is still very useable. Invest in a good screen protector though.

I felt exactly the same until I accidentally dropped mine about 2 1/2 feet onto a tile floor and it dented/scratched the top corner of the device. Not extreme, but it was only a light tap on the ground.
I immediately went out and bought a gel skin made for the Prophet. Adds nothing to the weight/size/form-factor of the device.
I saw one that had a flip down plastic screen protector as well, but figured that was a little overkill.
Of course, these are in cell phone shops all over Asia, don't know about other countries.
I've found many people on the street using these skins instead of cases just because of the form-factor element. It's a shame to ruin such portability and, dare I say, elegance, to protect it.
But even now I feel like one of those guys that leaves his television remote control in the cellophane wrap so that it won't get any wear and tear... it was made to be used!

Hi vsc, that is a great case - the best I have seen so far! Thanks for the link.
I see that this case is for the Jam though - are the Jam and Jamin 100% identical (the form is identical (I believe) but not the button arrangement, right?).
I will contact ebcases directly also.
Thanks!
I asked the guys in the UAE and was told that the JAM / JAMin are identical. From the spec sheet they are within 0.2mm in size.
To be honest I had one of these in hand a few weeks ago and there was no issues with button placement and fitement in the case.

That is the reason why I really think that a protecting case is necessary (in case the device falls that is) - specially for a $600 device.
On the flip side, adding unnecessary bulk to a device which was purchased due to its slim form factor is kind of contradicting. Thus, I am searching for a very slim case, which still provides protection.
thulsey, which silicon case are you using? Have you heard of Skintight cases from Pamwarelabs http://www.palmwarelabs.com/Products/ProdList.aspx?CateID=36 ?

Thanks vsc!
As long as the cut outs are not covering buttons, I guess thats fine then.
So, from the pictures of their website, the case really looks very tight and it appears that it doesnt add any (at least not too much) bulkiness to the s200. How does the case appear if you saw this it in person and on a Prophet? Do the pictures reflect the impression given on their site?
What about these?
Has anyone tried out the aluminium cases like the ones sold on expansys? Or this one for example
http://www.seidioonline.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=71
I know the last one is kind of not a case, but a carying holster, but nevertheless...
Yes the pictures are a good representation of the actual case.
Note that the cover flap has padding on the outside surface, but the supplier can manufacture the case without the padding to reduce volume. There is a hard card within the flap, so I don't consider the padding to serve any purpose.
On the other hand the case I'm using while I wait for the leather case is from Brando,
http://shop.brando.com.hk/bwsiliconecase_details.php?id=49
Simply put the unit in your pocket with the screen facing inward.

I will contact the supplier to see how much the case would be without the padding. Anything, which makes the case a little slimmer helps - specially for that price.
Btw, is it cumbersome to put the silicon case on and off? I was thinking about the silicone case but I would have to put the device out of the case every day (for charging in desktop cradle and car mount, etc) and dont want o fiddle with this each day. Way easier to simply slight it into a case.
Changes to the case were US$10.
With respect to the Brando case...seconds. The problem is really related to the material's affinity for dust. Drop it in your pockets and you would be amazed as to the mount of crud it picks up. It wipes off with a microfiber cloth or cleans up with water.

got a brando silicone skin and it tore in the corner of the screen where it is thin. It also had a spot on the keypad that was thicker making it look like a black dot and not transparent. I found it to fit very well, but was a little thick, felt like a Wizard when holding it. Dust isn't too bad if you're not a dirtbag.

The one I'm using is very similar to the one from Palmwarelabs. It even has raised icons on each of the buttons so you can (sort of) feel what you're pressing. I think it's a local brand here in Taiwan, but I'll look into it and see if I can find it on the web.
When I was searching, I noticed that there are several different thicknesses of silicone, and various levels of craftsmanship that go into cutting things out (like the screen area, infrared port, etc.)
Get the flexskin from www.boxwave.com!!
You won't be dissapointed!

hey vsc, I talked to EBCases today and they said that the case for the Jam wont fit the Jamin due to different button arrangements.
According to EBCases' customer service agent (very friendly and helpful!), they are working on a new case right now, which will then fit the Jamin. The new case would probably take another 4 weeks in order to be released.
I might just wait for this new case, since their case really is the best I have seen so far (and I have looked at a lot of them).

Whats the Best Screen Protector for Kaiser?

I bought an el cheapo one from ebay and not only does it feel horrible to the touch the edges are starting to fray. I had bought one for my ppc 6700 like 2 years ago that looked like nothing was on the screen and had great tactile feedback, which ones do you recommend for our kaisers?
I have purchased many screen protectors from cheap sites as well as expensive ones. My favorites are the ones from InvisibleShield. They are a bit more expensive, but they are very precisely cut and last a long time. If they ever get scratched you can get them replaced for free as well. I have not tried BodyGuardz, however, which are the same price, but you get two instead of one in the package.
I like the Boxwave Cleartouch a lot.
If you are anything like me, buy the three pack because you'll probably mess up at least one putting it on. While they say you can wash and reuse them, I don't think it's worth it.
That and a can of compressed air to blow the dust off before you put it on and you should be good.
Side note about using a compressed air can - don't use the straw. I had it blow off directly at my screen and thought my screen was permanently damaged. Thankfully, I had been using the screen protector that came with the tilt which has a bit of adhesive on it, so I only "scratched" the adhesive.

I have one of the InvisibleShield HD ones on mine, it is really crisp/clear, doesn't really show fingerprints at all, and its been on my phone for a few months now, and still looks like new.
The only thing I'm not sure of, is that it seems like it may reduce some of the sensitivity of the touchscreen because it is thicker, YMMV though.
I also have the bodyguardz themselves on too, and I'm not nearly as impressed, I'm probably going to pick up one of the Seidio slim rubberdized cases, just trying to spread out the accessory cost right now
I like...
... the one it came with. Still looks new.
im in the UK, i buy 3 screen protectors for asda for £2.99 (guessing thats about $5), so id guess walmart would be a good place to look for cheap ones.
ive had to cut it down to size for my hermes but the screenie i have on it has last over a year
ive also put these screenies on family and friends phones and cameras, no one come back to yet complaining.
My first windows mobile device was in 2002 and i tried every cover for it. From cheap ones to a couple of the more expensive ones. One of which was the PocketPCTECHS writeshield protector.
I bought the double pack, which came with the Antiglare one, and the Crystal Clear one. I applied the Crystal Clear one and it was amazing... i never used the anti-glare till i got my next device and threw it on that one.
They are very durable, can barely tell they're there and are just amazing...
But for my kaiser, i just ordered the invisibleshield for the entire device so i thought, why not let me try their screen protector out and see how it holds up.
so till i try out the invisibleshield, i'm still recommending pocketpctechs.
Martin Fields. As long as you install it properly (cleaning part is very important), you don't even know it is there.

Registry tweak for screen sensitivity really helps
Think if you using the highe durability thicker screen protectors the increased pressure sensitivity will help alot - am just using the one that came with the TILt on it and it greatly improves tactile feedback and response is almost instantaneous with very minimal pressure
Q: How do I increase the sensitivity of the touch screen?
A: If you want to increase the sensitivity of the touch screen, I recommend setting the registry key (HKLM\Drivers\?TouchPanel\Pressure Threshold) to 5000. It may seem a little high, but the response time is practically instant, and very little pressure required (still enough to avoid accidental presses).
thoughts concerning Martin Fields & Expert Shield protectors
Mine is another vote for the Expert Shield and/or Martin Fields.
Just got it at around seven bucks shipped from eBay. I (prior to this) ordered a Martin Fields and had a difficult time applying it to my Tilt without creating air bubbles. I'm clumsy. and I sneezed half-way through. It's definitely high quality and far better then what shipped with my Tilt. Anyway, I took it into the bathroom and left it to dry so I could attempt to re-apply it later. There, it promptly slipped into the space between the sink cabinet and the tub. Goodbye Martin.
* sigh *
The ES protector seems to be just as good - they're both excellently cut and you can't go wrong with either of them. I don't feel it impairs the screen at all - stylus and finger use ( I use my finger all the time ) are pretty much as it was without the protector. Maybe a tiny touch less sensitive, if you're picky....one can increase sensitivity to compensate. I myself did not find this necessary.
I hope this can be of use to anyone considering the choices. I think a screen protector is a must if you care about your device. I had little regard for my HTC 8125, which lived in my pocket up until last week. The screen held up pretty well, considering it's been to PPC Basra and back. It shared the pocket with my keys, various automotive tools, nuts, bolts, and large quantities of quarters.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I know I've screwed up a few of mine in the past. I have Expert Shield protectors on every device I've owned. Nokia 6820, 6822, E-70, PSP, my girl's Sony-Ericsson w850i, LG Shine, my friend's LG Chocolate and I've never had a problem with them.
I'm glad you enjoy yours as much as I do.

I got the Boxwave Cleartouch Crystal and the Anti-Glare, used both for two weeks and I settles on the Crystal..
I just don't like how the Anti-Glare makes the screen look, the Crystal on the other hand is like having nothing on the screen at all it's perfectly clear and well the Anti-Glare really wasn't Anti-Glare..
both are nice and thick and I didn't have to adjust the sensitivity on my Tilt either to use them
WriteShield
Hi,
Someone can say me if WriteShield Screen Protector fit exactly the screen size of the Kaiser without leaving some screen surface unprotected ? Or which one fit exactly the screen's size ?
Thanks in advance

Invisible Shield

I like the idea of the invisibile shield product (www.invisibleshield.com). And wanted some feedback from those who have used it.
I assume that the shield covers the full screen as well, so that you do not need a separate plastic cover to protect your screen (?)
Given this is the case, how responsive is the touch screen with the invisible shield on? How badly is the sensitivity reduced both:
1) With the stylus
2) With your finger (for using TouchFlo, etc...).
It looks like a nice addition to any case/clip/holster combination as everyone will have it out of their case at somepoint. It offers additional protection and is so think that it probably won't interfere with any other solution.
Please let me know...
thx
I recently bought this and i feel it protects my kaiser well. The fullbody covers the back, side, and front (including the screen). I throw it in my bag/pocket without worrying whether it'll get scratched.
However, the overall feel does change, it seems thick and sticky at times. I can still navigate with the stylus and finger w/out a problem though so I think i will keep using it.
You may also want to read this post too

I used the invisibleshield on my wizard and bought an overlay plus shield on the kaiser. From the two, I would rather go with the overlay plus because of the feel. It slides a lot eaiser with the stylus. It protects pretty well, not as well as invisible shield, but I rather go with feel then protection, my personal preference.
Good things about invisible shield, gives you confidence that your shield is safe. The bad part, it does get pretty sticky and loses feel after couple months. Stylus still works fine, but takes some getting use to. People who buy it adapt to it, and tend to love the product.
Does the invisible shield have a separate piece that protects the screen apart from the full body?
By this I mean can I buy the Invisible Shield and install all of it EXCEPT the screen protection? And then get a Martin Fields or someother for the screen?
thx
I hate them with a passion !! while their advertised video shown an iPhone to be covered 100% due to device being just a square block ( easier )

Think I will pass on it, after seeing the comments.
Well, I must say that I have to agree with the naysayers on this one.
I purchased an Invisible Shield for 50% (about $13). I found the following negatives after applying it to my Tilt:
1) Overlapping pieces and not precise cut: The side pieces overlapped with the top by about 1/4 of an inch. In addition, some of the cut outs on the back piece were very slightly off causing me to have to position it in such a way that it came too close to the edges of the devices, running the risk of peeling off.
2) Didn't cover enough of the unit: I wasn't planning on using the screen shield, as I went with a Martin Fields instead. So, there was very little of the device covered. The entire back was covered, which was nice, but I didn't feel the side edges were covered well enough, especially as these are the areas that can get scuffed and scratched if dropped. I was almost willing to keep it just for the back piece as it protected the back while it was face down in my holster. However point 3 below is why i didn't...
3) Messy look: I purchased the shield to keep it looking new. However, once applied you could see various imperfections in the shield (especially on the large back piece). Granted, this is the result of my installation... BUT unless you have a clean room with 0% dust particles in the air you aren't going to get a clean smooth look. I washed my hands, prepped the device (cloth and air blower can) and was very careful and still didn't like the look.
To the company's credit, it was easy to get an RMA, and it will only cost me the price of a stamp to send it back for my refund.
I'm going with a Seido rubberized case and holster!

Is everyones like this??

I have just got my DHD, have two Desires and a Wildfire, and have been very happy with the build quality on them all so far. But on the DHD apart from the sim cover issue which seems to be well covered here, has anyone noticed the edges of the screen??? to me it seems the screen is to low in the case, on mine if yu run your finger across the screen towards the side of the phone, the case seems higher than the screen, and is quit a rough edge to it.
This is all round the edge of the phone. The screen seems to be aligned in the casing, it just seems as if it sits low and not flush with the side of the case.
Are they all like this? Or is this another build issue with the DHD.
Other than this, I am more than happy with the phone, and can put up with it, if there are more like it, but as I only have a seven day exchange, I would rather get one that is correct, if even this is a fault.
Cheers
Yeah mine is like that and prefere it as I don't use screen protectors so if your phone is placed on a surface the screen it self wont be in contact so wont get scratched easy. Weather or not that is reason for this I don't no but I do prefere it. Although they could of made the edges better as they are slightly to rough

Yes they are. Maybe it's designed to hold the screen higher when you put the phone face down, so it doesn't get scratched. Anyway if you put a screen protector (and I advise you to do it), it'll be perfectly flat.
Cheers everyone, feel a whole lot better knowing this. As I said other than that I am more than happy with my new toy. Soo many additional features from the standard Desire.
Only issue I have is affording a Desire Z as well to complete the collection
Cheers again, a screen protector is my next purchase, already have the htc leather pouch coming, as I have these for the other two Desires and my Wildfire, also have a gel skin coming as well, but will see when it comes if I am going to use it.
Any tips on a good screen protector to get?
Yep...go to the Accessories section or Ebay and Google should help you with your quire...
