[Verdict 10/11/11] MIUI vs Samsung ROMs (Non ASOP ones) - Galaxy S II General

Alright after a week of testing. Heres the rundown.
Stock Features you will miss:
Enhanced Contacts.
Motion Gestures.
HW Accelerated Browser
The Cam. MIUI isnt as good.
Battery life.
MIUI features you will miss if you're hooked:
Firewall
Guard
App lock
Themes
UI. duh.
Elegance.
Overall verdict is wait a bit. MIUI can be better. The MIUI contacts isnt good either.

Oh and Stock Cam vs MIUI Cam.. whats better?

Use skifta instead of allshare and wi fi file explorer instead of kies.
Tw camera is better.

Thanks. Got Swype Beta working. Gotta check out TW Cam.

I think he meant touch wizard in TW camera. I would like this camera the hw accerated browser and tv out support in a miui hybrid rom.

There has to be some Pros and Cons in AOSP ROMs over Stock ROMs. Customisations, speedy UI etc are better but on the other hand there are some simple yet impotent things aren't available or buggy! Why would one buy Samsung on first place and then suddenly they want to get rid of Samsung junk? A little bit of iOS, little bit of Android, I hate it anyway.

I have frozen literally everything all the Samsung bloatware that can be frozen, i think ive used Kies like once, it's a crock of sh*t anyway buggy as hell, allshare is a serious battery drainer too, why do people still use this rubbish then complain about serious battery drainage?

I love all MIUI stuff but I dislike the battery draining, camera is not good and video playback is so poor 'cause Hw aceleration is not working... Ignoring that, I prefer a lot this even over the perfect stock rom, 'cause I can personalize everything.

I've had a look and play with miui and cm7 nightly #99 lately.
Still like Samsung's roms better. To me they just seem more polished. Camera, calendar, etc, add jkay mods in there too.
Also find music sounds better for me on Samsung roms. That surprised me.
I pick cm7 over miui by a mile.
I must be missing something about miui because i didnt see anything to make me use it over Samsung or cm7.

Gotto wait until Miui rom fully functional only can compare i believe.

I've tried CM7 and it's pretty nice especially with all of the themes and it is incredibly fast, however I love TouchWiz! Good Widgets, great camera app, smoothest launcher (IMO), and of course the best browser on any Android device.

About this, in MIUI you just have to press volume down+menu. Pretty easy IMO...
About everything else im with you, but let me add one more con about MIUI: Call recording doenst work. Not the stock app but neither "CallRecorder" app.
Since this is an important feature for me, I hope they manage to fixed it because I really like MIUI.

Every now and then, i fill that urge to try MIUI or Cyanogen, and after a day or two, i am back to Samsung ROMs ...
1.I've been modifying my framework and TW launcher since my i9000 and i have made my personal setup from it
2.Video codecs support, although recently i've found Dice player who looks extremely capable, even more than the default one
3.The small little things, like brightness swipe on status bar, call and message swipe on contacts and some others that doesn't come to mind right now
4.Like someone else stated, i also like the cohesion of the stock ROM
There are some things that always bothered me that Samsung doesn't implement in it's ROMs like percentage battery and BLN. I mean, those are are easy to do, add functionality and they blend well with stock ..., but luckily, this is Android and we can do it ourselves .

Now that MIUI have officially launched the S2 ROM. I tried it. I used to use the Litening ROM. So far there have been PROS and CONS. Some neat features that I love that I dont wanna go back. But there are some minor things which I can't live without either.
I will be updating this thread with Pro and Cons with you guys support.
Stock ROM features I miss:
The Motion Gestures. In Gallery and on Launcher. I think that was TouchWiz 4.0... right?
Kies and AllShare. I would love to have those two. SGS2 is the only Android device out there with DLNA support and would be a shame to cut it out. --There are alternatives. WifiFile Explorer. And Upnplay.
The easy screenshots like iOS.
Swype support. I sideloaded Swype but looks like I cant switch themes. And the Official Swype installer on MIUI says the resolution isn't supported. Weird. -- It works.
The Camera App. For some weird reason I think the MIUI Cam has flaws. -- Still looking for an alternative. Gonna checkout TW Camera.
And this may be stupid but MIUI doesnt show H+ icons. Just H. (Network icon) -- Think themes can fix this.
MIUI Features I love:
The torch. Pretty neat, you can use it by pressing the Home Button.
The UI and themes. Obvious
The Music App Lyrics
You can lock specific apps. And even hide them.
The Guard feature. Now I can give my phone to anyone w/o worrying bout them snooping.
Status: Back to Stock. MIUI has Battery drain issues.

and the only thing stock vs Miui i care is the internet browser in stock rom that comes with hardware accelerated. And also the long press edit for search is imssing in MIUI.

What I can't live without is the to out support via MHL missing from all aosp roms.

it does and i said the same thing but iv been running it for a month now, switching off to new sense roms but within a hour im back it works way to good. All the sense roms out battery life sucks, it lags, and even after switching to a new kernel seems something breaks like wifi.

MIUI is ios if ios was designed really, really well. It may "simply" look the same, but it isn't remotely close. I highly recommend you try it before you bash it for not having an app drawer.

I wasn't thrilled with the lack of the app drawer but that's easily fixed by loading another launcher. When I was using MIUI it was Launcher Pro.
MIUI looks like iOS after a fresh flash, but it doesn't have to. That's what I love most about it, I can theme every aspect of it. I use Alt Drawer, so I have an app drawer.
Plus it's smooth, has a lot of neat apps, and is different than any other rom I've seen. I switched to it because I was bored with CM7 and didn't like Sense. That was in April and I haven't looked back.

i tried that, but the more apps i put in, the laggier it got for some reason, and it was really cramped, kind of annoying to try to find an app lol
I am on the dislike MIUI bandwagon too. I'm not going to bash it as I agree it has some sick features. The killer for me was the app drawer and 4g. I think if I gave it more than a day I could customize it to my liking but I just like Sense and all the Sense features.
I thought about maybe a custom launcher but then I thought "why change from a Sense rom that is native to my HTC phone that guarantees GPS ect to work by default and install one that isn't just to put a launcher over it and defeat the purpose"
I got bored with Sense launcher and Rosie so I currently have ADW ex installed and still have flawless gps, the dialer I like, everything synced how I like, email app I like apps where I want ect... right from the start.
I could do that with MIUI or CM but then I have to install DialerOne, GoSMS and a few other things to get what I like. I can't stand any of the AOSP dialer and sms layouts.
If I didn't live in such a 4g rich area I would probably give MIUI the turn it deserves but that is a killer before I start. It's also what's really irking me about the new Sense 3.5 Roms. Runny~Bliss(i think) hybrid looks gorgeous to me..... but I'll wait it out.
Miui isn't a bad rom at all. At first I refuse to use it because it did remind me of my old iPhone. But ended up trying it and loving it.
I get better battery life with miui compared to sense. Plus there is alot of built in apps and features to miui that is bad ass. And who can forget all the sweet customizing you can do to it. For example just did this setup below a few minutes ago...
One somewhat downside for me is the no 4G but then again that only effects me when I go visit my parents up state. That's when I backup Miui and switch to a sense Rom problem solved haha.
Sent From my Verizon powered Evo 4G!
MIUI is AMAZING. I love it. And the theming? NO ROM beats it! Its fantastic the way you can make your phone look. The only reason why I won run it, is because of the laggyness of the keyboard.
Here is my current setup of MIUI, and it damn sure doesn't look like iOS to me...
BTW, my GPS snaps perfectly, syncing all 8 SATS in about a millisecond. I really don't get why people make comments without knowing how to do something.
Maybe it does look a bit like iOS. But I don't care, it's still the smoothest and best ROM I've flashed on my Evo. (and particularly this week's build is quite stable so far).

Not sure if that was directed to my gps comment but either way...... It's a know fact that aosp based roms are more subject to gps issue and have had numerous "fixes" posted to resolve.
It's not a matter of what I KNOW how to do it what i WANT to deal with. I never said aosp or miui were bad by any means. Just not my cup.
Posted a long time ago in the future.
I used to think the same. Now, I have customized Miui to my liking by creating my own app drawer and installing a new theme via the built in theme manager. It is very fast, very advanced, highly customizable and finally pulled me away from Sense (though I do have two Sense Roms in my Boot Manager slots).

why dont you ppl like touchwiz? touchwiz is amazing

how can so many of you not like touchwiz, lemme correct that *HATE touchwiz... i realize its the hip thing to do, to hate touchwiz, and you somehow think it makes you look pro.. but touchwiz rocks.. most of you havent even seen what the alternative is, you just hate it cause everyone else does.
do you realize losing touchwiz loses:
*built in screen capture by pressing home+lock
*task manager built into long press
*swipe left/right to call/text in contacts/dialer/texts
*toggles in drop down menu
*amazing UI in camera/file manager/ music player
*ability to adjust display options, beyond what stock roms are capable of
*swype
* ability to adjust brightness by moving dropbar back and forth
* the option to use the actual touchwiz launcher
* Divx, Xvid, and .avi support out of the box, as well as other formats supported only by samsung
its not like having a stock rom gives you anything in place of these.. if you dont like the touchwiz launcher, you can install another one, i cant see why ppl are soo determined to get rid of it, and have nothing in its place. would you really rather have no options, in place of where you DID have options?
I personally like touchwiz and that's the reason i'm not switching to
aosp
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
You forgot all the built in format support for multimedia files.
On older devices the phone was much slower when using samsung roms (tw) than AOSP. I i think that's the main reason why some people HATE touchwiz.
Right now AOSP roms like cm7 are still faster than Samsung roms, but that doesn't means that Samsung roms are bad!
Touchwiz has some goodies were it still bet AOSP, so at the end is a matter of personal taste.
Enviado desde mi GT-I9100 usando Tapatalk
I personally like the TouchWiz UI on Gingerbread. It's an update over AOSP/CM7 Roms.
However, seeing that KP4 video, i find that TouchWiz 4 is a downgrade for ICS. Many of the features that TW4 had over Gingerbread were implemented in ICS.
So for me AOSP is the way to go for ICS.
hell yeah .!! i love touch wiz
I have nothing against TW, there are many parts of it that I actually like, but ICS seems to be a big step forward for Android and TW (at least the ALPHA/BETA iteration does not seem that much of a step forward).
Granted, I am actually not really sure what I expected of TW and ICS, but I guess I was expecting to see more of ICS (Roboto, the Blueish Hue for the Signal Meter/etc.) and maybe over time my expectations will rationalize and I will see TW as my mode for interaction with Android and ICS.
Dan
I just find it clunky. I always install LauncherPro immediatly after a reflash. Much easier to fit stuff on my home screen.
Others run better on my phone. That simple. No hate.
---------- Post added at 12:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:06 PM ----------
Hell yeah. Now I look 1337/pro/boss status.
Well...in ICS taskmanager will be replaced from standard one.
I like ics but it has some missing feature
1)Sorter icon on app drawer (only using appZorter)
2)Custom icon of status bar (thanks Jkay)
3)HORRIBLE!!!! Green battery. Add a % better battery.
i think tw is good. the features are just amazing. this is my first time to use a samsung android phone (former lg user) and i find tw really functional compared to my past phone's ui. i just don't like the look... there's a lot of launchers out there anyway. and about aosp, i just think it's too plain for casual users, like... me... hehehe!
btw, happy new year, guys!
Because I can't resize all widgets, have 6x6 home and lock screen, customize animations and change themes and icons. I also can't hide the dock or the status bar.

Having a stock rom I can get almost everything that TW provides by installing 3rd party apps; on the other hand, on a stock TW rom, I'm stuck with no video calling in GTalk, no green icon indicating Google service status, only 6 recent apps and a bunch of Samsung bloatwares.
Touchwiz is ugly..
iphoney SMS
launcher icons
Pull down toggle icons
Music player
Touchwiz would be the best launcher if it had the following
1.multi dpi scaling.
2.proper resize support.
I tried out CM9 yesterday and the only thing I miss from tw is the browser.. smoother IMO, even compared to the videos of the galaxy nexus..

I like touchwiz. Its the only UI where the launcher runs perfectly smooth even using a heavy live wallpaper. I believe that they use the cartoony colors to show off the Super Amoled screen as well. The only thing that will make me flash a non touchwiz ROM is Stock ICS, cuz im not using the visually unpolished abomination that AOSP Gingerbread is. MIUI is sorta buggy for us so its out imo

Touchwiz appreciation thread.

Is it just me, or is touchwiz on a tablet actually really nice :L
i know it slows the tab down, but the widgets icons and notification bar r really minimalist and generally not bad looking!
And the fact that stock touchwiz hc roms come with polaris office and a pen memo means that i dont really mind the occasional lag it has :L
Im also looking forward to the ics touchwiz build aswell.
Does anyone agree with me?

Yeah that's the thing though, a while I understand touchwiz on a phone is ugly. On a tablet its actually nice. :L they (samsung) havent done that much in terms of looks with tw, which is gd.
So yeah, bring on the trolls
I don't really see it. I have been using touching HC 3.2 for as long as I have the tablet. I just recently installed touchwiz-less ICS and now never want to go back to touching. I do not miss polarised office at all since it doesn't work with swiftkey tablet x, and ihave replaced pen memo with quill, which was only 20 cents. But I guess tastes are different...

Well, there are a few things I didn't like about TW:
1. Bright settings menu. The whole tab felt that it should have a dark theme and in most places it did. But then there was the settings menu that feels out of place.
2. The statusbar is annoying. I don't know how often I accidentally made a Screenshot when I didn't want to. Or brought up the pop up bar which contains alps I never use.

2. The statusbar is annoying. I don't know how often I accidentally made a Screenshot when I didn't want to. Or brought up the pop up bar which contains alps I never use.

Ok yeh i get it about the settings. But the screenshot button is useful. And im sure in the newer versions of tw u can have custom apps in the pop up bar?

is there a way to change those apps on the pop up bar? That would actually be useful if you could customize that.

Having a Screenshot function available is nice, but I agree. But I prefer the way the ICS Rom I am using implements it: hidden in the power menu. I mean, why would you need it readily available at all times?

Honeycomb is a very good concept but a "beta version" software: slow, laggy, unstable and incomplete in several ways... I got my G.Tab 10.1 in January and 2 weeks later I flashed (and kept updated ever since) ICS KANG and loving it.
That said, I do like the added Samsung apps and functionality (on both my Note and my G.Tab 10.1) so as soon as it comes out I will flash Samsung's ICS update.
The Note is already great as it is on the latest LB1 Gingerbread ROM so I don't mind waiting a little more for ICS BUT I really can't wait to get Samsung's ICS ROM for the Tab 10.1 and pretty pissed off that they can't seem to be able to give a less vague date.
I hope they make it up to me by adding the split screen funcionality shown off on the Note 10.1 and a revamped note app which syncs across my Note's S Memo app and Outlook notes..
I think touchwiz on 3.X is amazing, really improves the experience. I cringe whenever I see the stock notification bar (I have to open it, hit settings and then hit settings again to actually open the settings compared to open it and hit settings once in touchwiz).
If touchwiz is that amazing, what's HTC sense? Sense is great on both phones and tabs. Look at the HTC jetstream, HTC did a much better job then Samsung.
I don't mind Touchwiz. I like some of the little extras, etc. Stock Honeycomb is still fugly so TW helps a tad, but since it's so light, not much. ICS is a huge improvement on phones, but not so much in tablets. It's bascially what Honeycomb should have been in the first place.
I'd rather have HTC Sense, but since HTC never had any good wifi tablets last year, it just wasn't in the cards. I will say, the GT 10.1 has been a good tablet and does everything I need it to do, but I won't be buying anymore Samsung products like.... um.... Ever. My next tab will be W8 and probably from Asus or something.
I have never liked HTC Sense at all, Touchwiz is a great compromise between adding functionality and staying as close as possible at the "Android experience" (which keeps on getting better and better). Ideally I would like to have a consistent experience across all Android devices with, at best, "touches" added by the different makers and design and hardware to differentiate among them. Sense goes totally against this.

why do so many of you hate TouchWiz? TouchWiz is amazing!

i see thread after thread just spewing out hate for touchwiz..
how can so many of you not like touchwiz, lemme correct that *HATE touchwiz... i realize its the hip thing to do, to hate touchwiz, and you somehow think it makes you look pro, or cool, or like you know what youre talking about, but touchwiz rocks.. most of you havent even seen what the alternative is, you just hate it cause everyone else does.
do you realize losing touchwiz loses:
*built in screen capture by pressing home+lock
*task manager built into long press
*swipe left/right to call/text in contacts/dialer/texts
*toggles in drop down menu
*amazing UI in camera/file manager/ music player
*ability to adjust display options, beyond what stock roms are capable of
*swype
* ability to adjust brightness by moving dropbar back and forth
* the option to use the actual touchwiz launcher
* Divx, Xvid, and .avi support out of the box, as well as other formats supported only by samsung
*S-Voice
*Eye Tracking
*Smart Stay, keeps the screen awake while you're looking at the display
*Popup Play
its not like having a stock rom gives you anything in place of these.. if you dont like the touchwiz launcher, you can install another one, nova, apex, go, adw, adw ex, i cant see why ppl are soo determined to get rid of it, and have nothing in its place. would you really rather have no options, in place of where you DID have options?
answer now is not anymore or don't hate it that much anymore.
I don't hate the touch wize, I hate the touchwize launcher and i miss all my touchwize apps, I actually wish I could have to touchwize framework on my custome ics rom just with a another launcher

I really am hoping that I will like the new version of Touchwiz! If I can change the icons in the dock and on the homescreens as well as the size of the grid on the homescreen, then I see myself using it on my phone. If I can't do both of those things, then I'm using Apex.
I don't want to stare at the default dock icons all day long, they are way too cartoony and colorful for me. But yeah, if I can change ALL the icons in Touchwiz, slap a nice and dark wallpaper on there and get some Metrostation/Minimal Text goodness going... I would LOVE to use Touchwiz, because I always try to install as few third-party apps and stuff on my phones. I'm just afraid that it won't allow me the level of customization that I want. Lucky for me Android is about options, so I can have an alternative launcher on my phone within 2 minutes if I want.
So for me it's not about trying to be cool and hip. Those things come naturally to me.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think ditching Touchwiz will affect like half of the things on your little list there?
EDIT: Task manager, swiping left/right in contacts, drop down toggles, camera UI, swype, brightness control, popup play and certainly Divx, Xvid, and .avi support... I don't see those being controlled by what launcher you use? I could be wrong though
Most of that stuff isnt anything to do with TW at all. Most of it is in stand alone apps that will work whether you use TW as a launcher or not. I will be using Apex launcher and i will still have all the Samsung extras.
AOSP, Cyanogen and AOKP ROMS are over rated, most are slower than custom ROMs based on Samsung stock, they have missing or broken features and are often unstable. I dont see the point in getting a phone like the S3 and putting inferior software on it, why not just buy a Nexus to start with? The best ROMs are custom ROMs based on stock, optimised and free of the truly useless bloat.

The codec support is definatly the best and I love the small things they added like the customizable battery percentage, extended toggles in the pulldown, newsticker on the lockscreen, shortcuts on the lockscreen etc.. it seems like they let you customize alot and I think you can really tell they hired someone from the CM team.
The new touchwiz also looks pretty good, I really like that they use 5 icons now. The appdrawer looks great and the plain black pulldown also looks nice. I think it looks very grown up now and even though it's using popping colours I don't find it too tacky or cartoonish like many others. I can't stand the "buhuhuhu they ruined the beauty of stock ICS buhhuhuhuhu" comments anymore it might not be "eyecandy" like sense which btw. I find extremly ugly but it is super smooth, compareable with iOS, it's minimalistic and not too overloaded.
The browser in gingerbread was crushing pretty much everything. It kinda sucks on ICS ATM, but seeing some videos it seems like it's fixed on the S3. Chrome comes close but it's still so buggy and lacks features. Samsung still has the smoothest browser, thats for sure...

Absolutely not true! CM is probably one of the most stable aosp roms. It will provide you (after some time passed for development) with superior performance, battery life and sometimes options like ui themes etc.
This is fact, not just user experience... but for everyone the roms they prefer the most. Personally looking forward to have dualboot and cm9 as primary rom...

Pure Android JB on GS3?

Hi guys,
I just bought a Nexus 7 and I love it. Issue is the differences between that and the TouchWiz are getting annoying.
nothing huge but would prefer having the same on both.
This isn't a what rom is best question, but mainly which offers the closest to pure Jelly Bean for GS3?
I know Cyanomod is popular, would that be a good place to start?
Try super nexus by faryaab. That is closest to stock experience.
☞ sent from GS3 or Nexus
Any AOSP based Rom, like pure AOSP, cyanogenmod 10 or AOKP will do, they all use the same launcher as nexus 7 just the latter two have extra features like overclocking and extra settings. AOSP is completely clean.

Here's smart stay.
One of the biggest benefits of owning an S3 is having the customized UI you are complaining about. You get a really good messaging app with lots of cool features (like zooming with volume buttons when you're in the car for example, color schemes, you can choose whatever background you like, you are not confined to eye hurting white). You get samsung apps with lots of free apps you would have to pay for, also apps specifically for the S3, optimized for looks and performance. You get direct call, smart stay. You get the smoothest and nicest looking launcher with weather. Everything working out of the box. If it's only the launcher that's bugging you, just use trebuchet, apex or nova. The rest you shouldn't really complain about IMO. Pure android is lacking in looks and functionality, also all the custom roms you install will have worse performance in both 2d and 3d.
You might be right about 3D performance but the OS on CM9 is a HELL of a lot snappier, which - for someone who doesn't play games - is more important. No home button lag either.
I bought the SIII for the hardware and consider the software to be a travesty: it's like Samsung tried to cram as much useless crap in there as possible just so they could say they did it first. Their design standards and eye for colour are hideous. Touchwiz genuinely offends me. If it were not for the sublime hardware I wouldn't touch Samsungs with a bargepole. I'm one of those people who wishes that when you booted your Android phone for the first time you got the choice of stock or manufacturer-branded firmware.
Best wishes to anyone who likes Touchwiz but it's not for me, and I thank those wonderful devs who continue to work hard on removing it and giving us hardware lovers a purer Android experience.

I'm not sure by what you mean. The launcher or the menus? They are both equal or faster on stock. No home button lag - install Jkay mod alpha for LI5 and you have that sorted as well. To me the stock android look is so poor and lacks in functionality. My Gnex on stock looks like it's an empty device with basic functionality only. It's a matter of preference I guess. I understand your point of view and wish cm9 and 10 were as fast as the stock samsung roms. They are not.
Not in the ui, not in apps. Battery life is also worse. Fact.

Generally I find everything on CM9 feels a lot faster. I have been on stock for most of my ownership of the S3 so I know what the stock OS feels like - whether that's with ICS or the Jellybean leaks (up to LI4). I suppose it's down to personal choice but I don't personally find any functionally to be lacking in the stock ROM on the Nexus 7. I think stock Android is beautiful and I hate the fact that Samsung feels the need to add replace perfectly good things with rubbish ones - like that crappy keyboard of theirs.
Why not at least leave the stock keyboard and the launcher installed and allow the choice for the layman. Things like Smart Stay are a bit of a gimmick, fine, and other things like the swipe to take a screenshot, S(hit)-Voice and other stupid sensor related 'features' are utter crap that no-one surely uses...for me though, the main problem is that Touchwiz is ugly. Everything from the SMS app to the uglified notification bar.
Anyway, each to their own.

The problem with Touchwiz is that is has serious lag. Open the Dialer and it takes a good second to open up. Same with all the UI its just slow.
It has a ton of good features such as slide to call and stuff but the lag is killing me.
