Hi guys,
Just wondering if anyone can recommend a free video converter to convert media (wmv, mov etc) to play on the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Thanks
convert
I use Format Factory
converts to anything... you may want to ask which file format is best for the Tab... as I don't know.
I convert to 720x480 MP4... and it works well on mine... somebody on here may know a better size/setup
-shawn
You can also use vplayer. Plays everything without the need to convert anything.

EncodeHD is good if you want something simple. Just choose the XBox or PS3 profiles.

I like DVD Catalyst 4. It encodes according to the profile you select so you can choose the Tab 10.1 or the Nexus S or whatever other device you have.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did try Handbrake but it completely screwed up on the conversion.
I am trying Kies now (I didn't know Samsung had such a program available until last night) but if not, I might just use a player that plays everything. It makes the most sense.
Thanks again

I really enjoy using Plex as well running on my WHS. They have made some really great improvements in the last couple updates.
I use a DVD Catalyst if I need the files to be stored on my Tab and Plex to stream.

So I received a couple pm about what I do to get any movie working on my vibrant.
First off I like blurays. You can use them. But dvds look just as good.
Download a free program called Format Factory.
Go to the area for mp4 coversions section. Hd mp4.
Choose video file.
Covert.
Take new mp4 and move to video folder on vibrants sd.
Done. This corrects audio as well.
Plays in hd even cleaner than the packaged avatar movie.
Let me suggest a cg film like toy story 3. Simply omg worthy.

One conversion works on any iphone as well. In case later you switch phones. Its universal. On most any phone. Period.

I'm yet to find a video that won't play on the Vibrant straight out of the box.
It's been playing my HD MKVs flawlessly. Even the HD 720p ones!
Maybe FLV ones... but then, it's just a matter of installing RockPlayer.
Same for the most part. Some audio conversion needed.

I use freemake video converter. its quick & easy, real easy, almost too easy lol...
I use Vuze to convert movies for my phone.

I haven't converted any of my videos, I've added a .mkv, and .mp4, both working great. c:

Handbreak is another good one.
It was for Mac for the longest time. now its been ported to windows (works very well with 7). they are working on linux builds for Ubuntu and Fedora (14 only).
Just choose Normal on the side drawer and pick up a cocktail!
I've found that variable bit rate doesn't work as well as constant bit rates.
Where exactly do I go in format factory? In the video tab or ROM Device/DVD/CD/ISO? If I go to ROM Device/DVD/CD/ISO it says Please Wait Loading... for a long time

I normally convert it to fit it into the Fat32 file size limit at about 3.8Gb, my collection usually comes from a 15-25gb source.
I have a TF101 my own and I used the same preset which use High Profile to try to convert the video for my SGSII, but I found that it wasn't playing with hard-decoding, even though the SGSII plays it smoothly, but I guess if I throw in something which can be hard-decoded, it would burn less battery, right? (right now without hard-decoding, it's burning 1% in around 2~3 mins)
What program/script is the best option for converting my high profile mkv's to a usable format on my xoom. I'm not really interested in 1:1 quality as I think 720p is overkill for the 10" screen. I'm just interested in a quick and painless method that will also allow me do batches because I have quite a few films to do.
Thanks,
i tried looking around for conversion apps and i only found one. Its called MyView(on the market). I didnt get a chance to test it out yet tho. And if that doesnt work you can play .mkv's from the rockplayer app(its my personal favorite). I hope that helped

Definitely Badaboom. It's really fast for me and I only have an 8800gt, newer cards should be even better. There is a preset for the Xoom and even a batch processing mode.

Why convert, just install MX Player. It is free and plays anything. The bonus is you do not need different versions (original and coverted copy on your PC)

Because no matter what framerate will suffer. And it is much more battery friendly to use GPU render in then software.

I've tried VLC media player to rip some of my old movies I have, but I can't seem to find the ideal settings. I rip on the preset "Video for android sd high" but the movie still wont transfer over without my phone wanting to convert it again when I transfer. Then after it does, my 2 hour movie takes up 1.4 gb, and that seems to high. Any recommendations on a more efficient setting or maybe if I should transfer directly to the SD card and reinsert it into the phone? Thanks
Try a program called "Handbrake". I've used it rip my DVD collection and I set it to encode on a "universal" setting, ends up being in .m4v format and my phone plays it fine. I'd say that's a normal size (at least what I've experienced) for a 2 hour movie.

Why would movies downloaded onto my SD card for Flixster only be 700mb then? Are they somehow compressed?
I honestly couldn't tell you. I only have experience with that one program and don't know what flixster is.

I thought with handbrake you need to save a whole dvd to your pc with a different program and then use handbrake. I'd rather just use one program If possible

I ended up getting dvd decrypter, and handbrake. That combo works even though I didn't want to get two programs but it's fine I guess as long as it does the job. Thanks
The whole process is pretty quick takes about 30 to 40 minutes for a whole movie. I'm happy with it

Not sure if this is even an issue here... your 1.4GB file for a 2 hour movie at 1080p sounds exactly right... The 700MB file you mentioned sounds right for the same movie in 720p... are you checking these files after loading them on your phone to see what resolution they are? I've never seen one of my movies at 1080p turn out smaller than 1.+GB... even recording with the camera for that long turns out that big at 1080p...

Get the best BEST dvd / blu ray backup software I have ever used. It's called MAKEmkv. It's free while in beta. You can find the software key on their website that is good through jan.
Use this. You will thank me later.
Makes 100% lossless backups in mkv format. Then you can use handbrake to condense.

Yeah DVDS are 720 at best. Blue rays are 1080. You can upscale the dvds to 1080 but it's not really worth it. You would be better with just the 720 verison.

If you convert DVD of the VOB format to any other formats, the quality will be lossy. But if you just rip DVD to VOB format which if of the same format as DVD, the original video format will be kept maximally as there is no re-encoding process. Also some software allow you to convert DVD to HD format. I think the output quality will be good.
