Hey folks, I'm Electrofreak from over at the Epic 4G forums. I'm one of our hardware nuts over there (no, really, I'm not kidding) and I'm trying to solve a little mystery.
As many of you may know, the Quadrant benchmark heavily favors Snapdragon CPUs and also badly skews I/O scores on Samsung's RFS file system. In short, it gives Galaxy S phones a bad score despite their cutting-edge performance.
Since I'm always blathering on about hardware, a friend of mine at work asked me to recommend him an Android replacement for his WinMo phone on Verizon. I explained that the Samsung hardware outperforms what the Droids currently offer (excepting the CPU in the Droid 2 Global) even if software updates have been few and far between.
So he went and bought a Fascinate, and since I've recently been advocating testing a new benchmark application, Smartbench 2010 on the Epic 4G, I had him download and benchmark his stock Fascinate.
The result was pretty dismal; where a stock Epic 4G on Eclair gets a Productivity Index (CPU) score of about 700 and a Gaming Index (GPU) score of about 2400, he was getting like 300 and 500... at most. The I/O test was taking forever, so we rebooted the phone, cleared running apps, and ran the benchmark a couple more times, with the result being the same each time. The CPU and GPU portions of the test actually seemed to complete fairly quickly however, and there wasn't any real appreciative difference in overall performance between our phones when slinging through application menus or using the phone in general. (And damn, while I like having my Epic's keyboard, the Fascinate is so freakin' thin!)
Now, on the Epic 4G forums, we've tested this benchmark app on RFS and EXT4 file systems and the difference has been minimal (usually slightly in favor of EXT4). So I'm pretty sure it's not the RFS file system to blame unless there's something wrong.
Anyone else willing to download Smartbench 2010 from the Android Market (it's free, and designed by the folks at SmartphoneBenchmarks.com) and give it a shot on your Fascinate? I need to find out if it's the app or the phone that's to blame.
In advance, many thanks!
I just ran it and I got this on my fascinate

Awesome, thanks for the scores guys! I'm guessing rqdxrocket's score was stock? It's looking more and more like something is wrong with my friend's NAND chip on his Fascinate. (See EDIT.) Maybe we'll drop a custom ROM on it and see how it fares. I'll also run some catlogs to see if it's got bad blocks.
Worst case scenario we'll flash it back to stock and bring it in for replacement. My friend is having a rough time of it; got his Fascinate and then right after someone changed lanes into him and screwed up his car. Now on top of that to have a high-end smartphone producing scores that would make an HTC Hero hang its head in shame has gotta be tough to bear.

Yep, something after a reboot is causing a drastic plummet in scores. I've actually pointed the author of the Smartbench 2010 application to this thread, so maybe he'll know what's causing this to happen.
How soon after a reboot are people waiting to run the test? I've noticed that if I try to do much of anything before media scanner runs 2-3 times (or however many it is), things seem to run very slow.

So now 3 guys have been able to duplicate the problem. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens to everyone with a Fascinate. Very strange.
On the plus side, I can tell my friend that his phone is fine. Now, hopefully we can get the benchmark fixed so that you guys can use it!

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Well the fact that the new version reads lower plus the fact that your underclocked that much, I'm surprised it was that high, unless you're still on 1.5.
The highest scores are from CM6 w/ the Snap Turbo Kernel and range from 2500 to ~3000. Highest I ever got was 2700. Miui also gets high scores of like 1700 to 2000ish for some people, although I usually go 1500s. For Sense ROMs, I think the highest I've gotten was 1500s or maybe low 16s with the old Quadrant and MikFroyo + Ziggy's BFS kernel.
I also used to get 1400s with EViO 2 1.7 underclocked to 921. That is a sweet ROM.
Its been a few month's since i ran one, but I think it was a little over 1200

I ran it once on performance governor at 1.5ghz and got about 2500 on benchmark.

This is the best score out of a series of three I ran right after flashing Cm6.1.1 and cranking setcpu up to max. I'm sure that this would run perfectly well at these speeds for day to day on his kernel, but I usually only run at around 1113mhz. The g2 is plenty fast on its stock 800mhz with fantastic battery life, don't get me wrong. But what the hell is the point of all this rooting and rom flashing wagoonery if I don't give myself a slight performance bump.
*Epenis waving*
At 1.5ghz max and 368 min (on-demand governor) with CM7 and Pershoot's latest kernel (I believe he incorporated the new GPU drivers), I get 2700-2800. Quadrant tests your CPU, memory, and GPU performance.
As for Quadrant I tend to find it unreliable, for benchmarks I use Smartbench 2011. Seems a bit more reasonable. Makes you realize how underpowered our GPU's is compared to the PowerVR SGX540.
And what is the gpu?

GPU = Graphical processor unit
its the chip in the phone that draws polygons and renders graphics so games and graphic related things run smoothly

from my understanding quadrant isn't all that accurate when it comes to benchmarking...hopefully i'm not wrong but I think it scores the phones ability to handle 2d/3d graphics, how fast it reads and write data, memory and cpu. If you are using the free version you won't be able to see how you score on each test. Even though its just numbers I can't help it...check out my latest and highest bench marks. I barely missed the 3k mark today on quadrant oc'ed to 1.8 got 2997...I just forgot to upload the screenshot.

for quadrant, i have noticed its important to run it several times before you get an accurate measurement... personally, i've had the best score around the 3rd or 4th run.... anything more after that just plateau the score or even dips a bit at times. and kill heavy background services (ie: f/b, lookout, juice defender, DSP manager)
FYI: if i set CPU back to stock, i'm still @ 2700ish
Quadrant hasn't been updated for a long time and it is not exactly reliable when it comes to evaluating a phone's performance. You're much better off with Antutu Benchmark.

Hello everyone. What's a good quadrant score for a stock 860? I have been seeing 2600-2650 on average, is this fairly common for this model? Is there a good way to prepare to take the test by closing apps, features etc?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Ive been averaging consistent 2500 of four attempts in quadrant after the 4.1.57 update. I normally run it just after start up and I get those scores.
I achieved 2740 with 4.1.57
I've gotten around 2900 once, but it usually falls between 2650 and 2800. To be fair though Quadrant only tests a single core, if you compare it vs say an inspire on stock rom (Or probably even a custom) at stock clocks it will only get about 1900-2100. So really the Atrix gets 20%-30% better scores and it's only using 1 of 2 cores. Another thing you'd notice on the Atrix is it has nearly no slowdowns, even an Inspire running at a 1.8 OC (battery life is horrible) will bog when you install/update programs while doing something else because it's still a single core and needs to share cycles across programs where the Atrix can devote a core to all background activities and the other to what you're doing in the foreground. I didn't really notice how fast the Atrix was until I had to fix something on my girlfriends Captivate (Gave her mine when I upgraded) and she has like 25 apps and a custom rom with a 1.4 OC and OMG it felt so slow compared to my Atrix.
I got a 2774 with the gingerblur ROM. That's the best I've ever gotten and I've run it on stock, 1.52, the new update and gingerblur. Gingerblur has gotten me, by far the highest and most consistent scores of all. I usually run between 2600-2750 under normal usage, which is quite a bit.

1-what kernel were you using when this 'bog' down happened at 1.8 ghz when something was updating. cause my inspire at 1.8 ghz while downloading a file through web, and updating apps in the market will still be faster than the atrix. ive NEVER even had so much as a hiccup at 1.8 ghz on my kernel, and i just did exactly that, downloaded a file, while 4 apps were updating in the market, and at the same time opened app to qr, and the apps loaded instantly. the atrix takes a few seconds for it to load up, with nothing at all going on, with all bloat removed and only the factory default apps on it. the inspire has over 100. also, i posted this elsewhere also, testing my kernel yesterday running at 1804 mhz all day long, i got over 16 hours off a charge with 3.5 hours screen on time. screen brightness was at 100%. if it was at 50 it could have went much longer. not horrible if you ask me. the inspire with a single core doesnt lag when a live wallpaper is put on it, and i can actually type on the keyboard without having to correct errors every other word cause its lags so bad.
just another note, my inspire rom and kernel at default 1ghz (no overclock) hit 2700+ quadrant
I just got 4000 on CM7
4900 with cm7 + overclock to 1.3ghz ;P
the motoblur software and at&t crap really slows stuff down.
What rom has the highest quad score for the vibrant?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Depends on many factors, not just the rom. There's also the Kernel, OCing, UVing and even the launcher.
Highest I have had without an overclock was 2456, and that was on Simply Galaxy v3 RC3 (Port from i9000) with all the tweaks engaged. It was very very fast. Faster than any other ROM I have used, even with overclock. Hell, if I could OC with that ROM I would bet that I could break 3000+ quads easy. But quads are worthless. You just have to try using the phone with the speed of that ROM. I didn't know the vibrant could be that fast.
Running Trigger right now. Get anywhere from 1400-1600. Runs ok. Was just wondering what some of the other Rome were capable of. How is the Simply Galaxy rom? I personally don't know anyone who has used it.

I second this.
So useless of an app, it has nothing to do with the actually smoothness and snapyness in any phone. Sometimes I feel it's scores are the other way around, the lowest you get the better your phone is
I'm a total lurker, but after "bricking" my vibrant about 3 weeks after getting it home last Fall and discovering the fix here, I've been tweaking, wiping, flashing, odining, and having a helluva lot of fun with it. I'll probably betray myself as still being a noob, but I see everyone kind of poo-pooing Quadrant as meaningless (and other benchmarks, it seems). Is there any objective measurement that you guys consider worthwhile?
I thought I was all hot **** for breaking the 2K mark, but I guess none of that matters?

Quadrant is amusing...
but it's not always telling of how a rom actually performs. Back in the day when we were using the OCLF, quad scrores were in the 2k range and that was with 2.1
That being said, I felt compelled to post this anyway, mainly just to show the cpu score improvement that we get with gingerbread. My phone was running Cyanogenmod7 at stock speeds. Comparing quadrant scores between roms that are all based off of each other is pointless.
The 1815 score is from CM7
The 1755 score is from MIUI
MIUI performs great, but it's not as buttery smooth as CM7. But from the two scores you wouldn't see that. More importantly I think this also lends to what I said about comparing two scores between roms that are based off of each other.
