Random interesting notes from the manual - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

I decided to read the entire english manual for the Galaxy Note.
I took the following notes (stuff I found useful) and thought I'd share.
It's a big ramble, but hopefully it's useful to someone.
I come from an mytouch 4g so I may note stuff which is 'common knowledge' to samsung phones. I basically wrote anything that I wasn't aware of before.

====================================================
page 20: shows location of antennas - it warns not to cover the GPS antenna, but doesn't say anything about the main antenna
page 27: pinch the idle screen is the same as menu -> Edit
page 31: you can mute your phone by doing app list -> phone -> keypad -> and holding #
You can't capture a screenshot while using a camera or playing a video
page 51: lists languages supported by handwriting. Note list for cursive is smaller.
page 52 has hilarious example of cursive korean that doesn't work.
The s-memo app supports zoom in/out. I wonder if that means you can automatically fake a larger piece of 'paper' by zooming in/out.
video calling:
You can sent an alternate image and/or hide your current image.
You can tape/hold the screen to copy the other party's image and/or record the video call.
You can set it to try a voice call if video call doesn't work.
Other notable settings:
sound: vibration intensity

Holding power key for 10-15 seconds does a forced reboot.
Stuff the galaxy note has that HTC sense doesn't:
Call log can be sorted.
Auto rejection from certain phone numbers
Call barring - restrict certain types of calling or prevent others from making calls on your device.
camera:
you can pinch to zoom while shooting
Has a panorama assist mode (shows a part of the prior image so you can line them up better)
If multiple phones are hooked up to each other via wifi direct, you can take a picture and sent it automatically to all the phones.
There are a gonkload of camera settings - see page 81/82. There's some interesting ones, like blink detection and 'outdoor visiblity' (?!?)
video recording:zoom may be unavailiable when recording at the highest resolution
video player : Each time you lock the screen while playing a DivX Video-On-Demand, one of your availiable rental counts will be decremented.

FM radio:
has a 'record this FM station' button
When playing in background, you can control it from the notifications panel.

The WLAN can be opereated in the EU without restriction indoors, but cannot be operated legally outdoors in France.
Clock:
Alarm - 'Smart Alarm' - activates simulated nature sounds with the alarm screen prior to the main alarm.
Kies air app - connect to your device via WLAN, and from a browser, view/control media files/contacts, messages, other data saved on the device.
calling has an auto redial setting.
Your device conforms to European Union (EU) standards that limit
human exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy emitted by radio and
telecommunications equipment. These standards prevent the sale of mobile
devices that exceed a maximum exposure level (known as the Specific
Absorption Rate, or SAR) of 2.0 W/kg. During testing, the maximum SAR recorded
for this model was 0.256 W/kg.

yeah, sounds like it's got loads of new features, can't wait to get one.

Don't feel like opening a new thread for this -
Samsung uk released some new videos of the phone.
Had a some interesting things:
you can scribble a note like ' meeting with jon tomorrow at 9 pm' and it will directly enter it into the s-planner.
THe battery meter has some sort of 'history chart' so you can see (I think) when and at what rate your battery started dropping.
social hub lets you sync with facebook/linkedlin contacts
There is a way to sync with itunes - see the 'switching' video

Updated [Jan-10]: [App] [G-Sensor] [Brand New] The XSense v1.2 Final

Credits:
Foremost, let us all acknowledge Koushik for his brilliant "Sensors" library upon which most if not all non-HTC apps that use the G-Sensor, Light-Sensor, and Navi-Sensor are built, simply ingenious. Moreover, I would like to recognize No2chem for the NeuLed2 library which is an equally exquisite peace of code that allows access to the Diamond/Pro Leds. Without those two guys, accessing these advance interfaces on the diamond/pro would be inapproachable at best.
Reason: HTC gave these phones lots of sensors, lets give them.."Sense".
......... EXTRA-Sense ...........
* Hopefully an innovaton, though mostly an integration of RANDOM but needful features...
Features:
1. Courtesy Profiles:
- Set Volume Profiles to activate on Face-Down & Face-UP events. Choose from: None, Silent, Normal, and Vibrate. You can also choose to suspend the Phone when its facing down.
2. Notifications-Sense:
- IF there is/are any outstanding notification(s), the device will vibrate whenever you move it - at customizable intervals: Missed Call(s), Voice Mail, and SMS.
3. Stylus-Sense:- When the Stylus is in/out: Will play sound + Blink the Back button's light.
- When the Stylus is out and the device is moved: Device will vibrate faintly + blink the Back button's light to REMIND you that the Stylus has not been placed back in. This goes on UNTIL the Stylus is placed where it should be.
* Uses "in.wav" & "out.wav" files in the \XSense\ Dir; you can use whatever wave files for this. OR, use the UI to select whichever wave files you want!
4. General Settings:
- Polling Interval: From 200 to 3000 Miliseconds. This determines the rate at which the G-Sensor is polled. Lower values give higher response times and fluid operation at the cost of battery life & CPU utilization.
- Flash Navi Lights: Will blink button lights to notify you of Profile changes and Stylus In/Out.
- Vibrate on Events: Will induce very subtle vibrations to notify you of Notifications and Profile changes.
- Suspend when UP-Side-Down: ???
- Light Navi Button When Suspended: Will do just that when the Light Sensor senses Dim or Dark conditions. This is an independent setting that turns ON the Navi button's light at suspend time, and OFF at Resume time (this is Event Driven, so no polling is involved). This feature really helps if, like me, you want to see where the damn thing is in the dark - before you launch it against the floor.
5. Installs to "\Program Files\XSense", and Creates 2 shortcuts:
"Start Menu\Programs\XSense" and "Startup\XSenseSvc".
Program Settings are saved to the Registry at "HKCU\Software\XSense\".
Use of System Resources:
1. Diskspace: 162 KB RAM footprint: 374-535 KB Battery: NOT observed.
2. CPU Usage: %0.29 Average. Spikes for 2 seconds to %2.7 - %8.5.
3. Battery Impact: Neligeable if at all!
* Indicated CPU usage occurs ONLY when there is an EVENT (posture changed, stylus in/out Sounds playing,
etc)
- Vibration: The way I like it is in waves of 200 miliseconds length! I generally hate vibrations, so if you want it at 201 ms. you're welcome to make your own program and exercise your personal taste.
- This prgram Registers Event Handlers for: "G-Sensor", "Incoming Call", "Phone Call in Progress", "Stylus in/out", and Power Manager events. DO NOT move it to Internal Storage, you have been warned.
Requirements:
.NET 3.5 + HTC device with GSensor & Light Sensor.
Compatibility:
Specifically designed for Diamond & Raphael, but will work fine on HD/Rhodium/Topaz/HD2 etc...
Bugs/Limitations:
Knock yourself out...
Release Notes:
- This is the LAST revision/release/app I make; programming too much work
- Download & Install the CAB
- Run the XSense from your Start Menu\Programs, customize to taste, and enjoy!
Change Log:
- Brand New UI: VERY "finger friendly" this should be especially useful if you have a WVGA Device
i.e. HD/Rhodium/Topaz/HD2 etc...
- Revised entire code for existing & potential bugs, and Performance
tweaked to death.
- Removed various functions (auto speakerphone, car-kit options, etc...). Use "Touch InCall Screen Tweak" for these,
its handles Phone/Speaker brilliantly!
- Shortcut added to Startup for automatic launch after reboot.
- Shortcut with a nice icon added to Start Menu (Credit to VetVito).
- General Tab:
- Navi Button will only light up if the device is in a dark place, i.e. You will
always see where your phone is (before you trash it against the wall).
- Stylus Tab:
- UI elements to select & set sounds for Stylus-in/out events.

where and how can one get a copy??
sounds interesting
Hmm.. bummer! I thought this would be popular - further feed my delusions of grandeur! Ok, I'm taking this off-forum.
Of course this is great idea. But if it was born some months ago, it would've been implemented in every Diamond. Nevertheless it is great. I will download and play with it,
best regards
Cool app, will be trying it out shortly.

Well, honestly, I was waiting for someone else to do it! Since the Omnia came out so many cried for its "courtesy mode" or something similar, yet no one took it up... So, I finally got tired of waiting lucky me, eh?
Cheers
So far so good, will do some testing and playing around. Thank you.
It is interesting but most features of your app already exsist in other software.
Courtesy-sense - well my phone does that already, granted it doesn't flash or vibrate but I'm not bothered that it doesn't.
Common-sense - loads of apps allow this to be done. I use Gyrator to achieve the effect and it serves me well.
They only part of your app I find really interesting is the Notifications-Sense, is it possible to make this a standalone app?
Sounds very interesting!!! Anyone detects bugs? Drain battery? Stable?
nice work
When I face down my Diamond, the LED is on, but how long is it going to glow. Till I turn it off? I don't think this is good for the battery.
best regards

Unless you have your own build of diamond/pro, you do NOT have courtesy-sense in the way I offer it; while face-down the device is switched to and stays on the silent profile; you do NOT hear any sound whatsoever as opposed to the native feature which will silence your ringer on a per-call basis!
While I used and still love Gyrator, I find its features irrelavent to my personal lifestyle - I find portrait view optimal "for me", so using a large program just to do what's "common sense" simply senseless. Utlimately, you are free to use whatever program(s) you please. Since I like integration/simplicity/lightness I will use mine
As for your request for a stand-alone app, I regret to say NO sorry

Till you turn it off, mate. I have been using this for 2 weeks now, I can tell you will notice NO difference in battery life enjoy
Touch HD
This sounds very interesting. Do you think it'll also work on the Touch HD (WM6.5)? This would be just what I've been looking for...
Cheerio
few things...
Courtesy-Sense: it does go silent when i flip it face down, but turning it back face up does not get it out of silent.
I'd really appreciate some way to configure features and possibly even turn some off.
Very good idea though, keep working on it.

Because the device is suspended!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Two Notes for everybody:
1. Suspending the device halts the processor, freezes all running threads, except hardware triggered events such incoming call, power manager calls, some keyboard events, and registered "run at time" notifications events. G-Sensor state change does NOT trigger a device power state change event.
2. Causing the device to respond to G-Sensor driver events WHILE the device is suspended will cause extensive strain to the battery since the device will wake up every single time you move it! The workaround is still equally exhausting to the system, which is to set the device's power permanantly ON and then turn the screen on/off based on the G-sensor's state (i.e. face up/down =screen off, everything else = ON".
Conclusion: this is the way Windows Mobile is buit, SO, while your phone is ON put it face-down to switch sound profile to silent and face-up/portrait to set it back to normal sound.
So, I hope this answers y'all to satisfaction...
how about not suspending device then? seems bit pointless having to manually bring device out of "suspend" so that automatic feature kicks in. again, some may agree with me, others might not, so having some way to configure those features would satisfy all.

x10 Wish List

We x10 users are growing in numbers by the second and it will be a while before we have the luxury of rooting, themes and fixes but what interests me more is having my gripes being herd so the stock phones little issues, bugs and failures software wise are highlighted before the major update in September is released.
So I’m thinking lets list our finding in this thread. From anger causing faults to suggestions to make current features better. Being an SE fan since the T610 I know that SE has a very odd relationship with its fans and something’s don’t hit home when they are staring them in the face but I’m hoping some things will stick.
Once some ideas come in I’d like to create a voting system but I’m not sure how to but I’m willing to take advice. Voting would be useful as I doubt all requests would be seen and acted upon (if any) but it would at least show a priority amongst the x10 users/developers.
So to be clear note software issues that could actually be corrected, improved or implemented. Posting this link on blogs near and far would get our wishes on the radar so please do so as I will. Starting with this one I reckon: http://blogs.extranet.sonyericsson.com/products/
To get the ball rolling...
Generally:
Hit areas for most of the UI seems a little out, maybe a calibration tool like that one found on windows mobile would solve this issue phone wide.
Selecting any audio file give an option to assign to the main ring ringtone. An additional option to assign to a contact seems only natural to be added.
Mediascape:
The track scrub bar is so random and dearly needs its hit area working on.
Old SE features like shake to shuffle, rock clockwise or anti-clockwise to skip forward or backwards/previous, hold on the volume rocker to skip forward or backwards/previous when the phone is locked.
These features are signature SE and I find it odd that they aren’t part of the phones features
Timescape:
It become apparent that this is simply a fancy viewer but it would be amazing for this application to actually be useful and enable the user to send messages in facebook mail and chat. The same for tweeter would make this app more than something people play with for a day.
Viewing the messages via the infinity button looks great, can this not be the default view when actually texting a contact. Contact Pictures and highlighted/different coloured threads.
There’s more but I can add them later.
Mediascape
This is not a bad player at all. But it has too many issues and shortcomings.
1) Its home page is almost useless, because the content in it is hardly what I'm looking for. When I click an album in the home page, I just want to hear that album.
2) I usually just want to browse for artists and albums, and to do this I have to press the little button in the upper right corner of the home screen. So, I would a much more simple, responsive and finger friendly interface. The slider is also very difficult to use.
3) When I disconnect the phone from A2DP, the current now playing list disappears and I can't resume it.
4) I just want indexed audio files in the /sdcard/music folder. Now I get indexed also ringtones and other audio files in SD card (for example, sound effects of a game) and this is a bit annoyance.
5) No way to control playback with device locked. My old SE phones allowed that by long pressing volume keys.
Timescape
After some tests, I no longer use it. I use the GMail client and the stock Facebook application. So I would like to be able to disable timescape and its integration with Contacts and Phone functionality.
Battery
If it is possible to do something via software to improve battery life, do it!
Hardware
I know it is impossible to do a "hardware patch", however I have found 4 basic issues that will drive my choice when I will buy my next smartphone, so this is actually a wish list for the next Xperia:
1) with this hardware design, it is almost impossible to do a good cradle/car holder, and given the very good GPS, this is a HUGE issue...
2) USB connector on top: this is related to the cradle issue, but it is also very uncomfortable speaking at phone when charging the device at home. The USB connector HAS TO BE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE DEVICE!
3) the maximum volume of the speaker is unacceptably low.
4) I really miss some kind of "joystick" to quickly navigate the UI without the touch.
Nice topic!
General:
* It should be possible to stop certain apps (moxier, maps, voice dialer, etc) from autostarting.
E-mail:
* Should be possible to set this app to download only headers. This is such a basic feature.
* Should be possible do discard/not show the oldest messages in inbox. It is already taking a while to load my inbox, what will happen in 6 months?
* Need to be able to attach other types of files than photos.
* When adding e-mail addresses from e-mails to existing contacts, the contact's name should not be overwritten.
Mediascape:
* Definitely needs the possibility to change track during key lock (i.e. holding volume keys).
* It annoys me that long track titles aren't centered.
Photos/camera:
* Need easy access to flashlight!
* Face recognition/identification is messed up, keeps forgetting added names and assigning random new ones. Needs a lot of work!
* When adding a photo as contact photo, it should not be necessary to scroll through all contacts starting from A. Should be possible to choose the first letter (as in contact list), or start spelling.
Contact list:
* When adding a photo to a contact, it should check if I have labeled that contact in any pictures, and suggest those (not just camera roll or standard icons).
Timescape:
* Should be able to display MMS. For example, use image as background and text as text.
* Should be able to display (scroll) longer facebook statuses, rather than sending me to the website.Widget for enabling/disabling wifi, GPS, etc should also include APN, which is not very easily accessible from the menus (many clicks).
Keyboards/language:
* I am missing an easy way to switch between languages (dictionaries)
* Should be possible to delete isolated words that the phone has automatically picked up. Don't want the phone to suggest all my misspelled words in the future. Deleting ALL saved words is not an option.
General
Definitely needs to be a way to disable included apps you're not using (Moxier and Timescape for me)
Info from the Testing menu (dial *#*#4636#*#*) should be available through the standard Settings menu.
Should be a way to adjust the various volumes on the fly without having to go through the Settings menu (pressing the volume keys only changes the Ringer volume, unless actively using Media, in which case Media volume is adjusted).
Would be nice to have a simple app to turn the camera light on and off for use as a flashlight.
Timescape
I don't find it useful at all. The information presented is too limited and the application is dog slow until it's all loaded and updated. Dedicated Facebook and Twitter apps are far better, as is Gmail.
Mediascape
I find it can be slow loading up file lists.
As lornova stated, the home page is useless. I'd rather be taken directly to my files.
Definitely needs lock screen controls. The lack thereof is the primary reason I switched to bTunes for music.
Needs support for DivX, XVid, and other common video codecs (FLV would be a bonus).
Contacts
Lacks options for standard fields from Gmail, such as "website" and "birthdate".
Needs to use the Facebook integration more extensively, automatically linking profiles to contacts and pulling contact photos in (if you choose an option to do so).
Facebook app needs to be registered as a link handler for Facebook links.
Camera
Needs a toggle for the camera light in the main camera UI.
Would be nice if the camera light could be used as a proper flash.
That's it at the moment. I may add more later.
...
I do want to mention, that despite the above issues/requests, I do love my X10 and am very pleased with it overall. But nothing is perfect afterall.
Great thread and I agree with most of the above.
Timescape - I don't use it and perhaps it is a little ahead of it's time. I still see Facebook / Email / SMS as seperate communication methods with seperate purposes, Timescape merges them into one (OK, I know you can seperate them, but still..) it does not still feel natural to merge them into one continuous thread. Perhaps in 5 years time this sort of view will be natural but today I still like to access Facebook / Email / SMS seperately.
Mediascape - The X10 is great as a music player and actually sounds better than my iPOD. Mediascape is almost there but to repeat what has been said above, why does the mediascape homescreen list the recently played as default ? If I have just played an album, why would I want to play it again next time? It would be so much more useful to have random album selections on the front page, or semi-random choices based on the types of tracks recently played.
The 'More' button to get to albums/artists is tricky to press when you are stood in a crowded train, make it biGGER !
The slider for artists/albums/tracks/playlists is almost impossible to use without at least 5 attempts to select the wanted option. SE must have done a field trial with the X10 before the release, why were such simple things not picked up or corrected ?
Battery - Not so much a complaint as it was a week ago, I now manage 30+ hours charge life with reasonable heavy usage, using Moxier/GPS/Bluetooth (no WiFi!), I need to sleep at least 7 hours a day so I have no problem with my phone doing/charging the same. However there are some strange things in regards to battery life on the X10, I have had everything from 7 hours to 35 hours life for a complete charge. I have given up worrying about it but feel convinced that WiFi is the root cause for fast battery drain, even when switched off.
Regardless to the above, I think my X10 is great, the positives far outweigh the negatives and the majority of the negatives could (SHOULD) be easily addressed in a software update. I have friends with Nexus ONE's and HTC phones and I still prefer the X10 WoW, indeed some of my Nexus ONE friends prefer the X10 WoW but still ask is it worth the extra cost ? (I believe it is !!)
I think many of the 'issues' are driven by Android still being an immature OS, the iPhone still feels more smoother and more together than the Android, but the real benefit of Android is the possibilites for customizations... I love being able to see email/rss/news updates on the home screen each time I switch on, rather than having to open up individual apps as I do on the iPhone....
I won't repeat all of the good comments so far.. I agree with most of them..
So, some additional points.
The "Sleep" button on the top of the phone shouldn't be used differently when you're on a call.. I'd like to be able to lock my handset when I'm on a bluetooth call, not wait for it to time out.
More end user customisation in the feature apps would be a great feature (ie.. being able to define your own home screen on Mediascape, so you can make it what suits your needs).
A better photo viewer (This is one thing that the iphone does much better). The standard one is a bit clunky...
A few people have suggested a bigger button to go to the "more" screen.. why not just do what everything else does and allow you to swipe across to it (surely that's the most natural thing to do?!)
When you've named someone.. an option for the phone to go and fetch all other photo's featuring that person would be good..
built in options to manage the start-up of apps.. and monitor your phones performance.
If I think of anything else.. I'll re-post.
A built in deskside alarm clock - that replicates a normal digital clock; I've not found any in the market that really do a good job.
Calendar option - ability to goto a specific date in the calendar rather than having to scroll through to find it.. ("Fancy going to see x in concert on the 23rd Sept?", "ooh, I don't know, give me 5 minutes to find that date in my calendar")
Dialer
Smart Dialing, ability to select different logs.
UI Buttons & selectable text like phone numbers in Person Information
They are just too tiny to click it right. Requires to touch at a precise place. Plus, gets very hard to call someone while driving.
MediaScape
Need to be able to creat playlists.
Need to be able to add a track to current playing queque.
TimeScape
Tweeter/Facebook tiles should have option to pick up Photos from contacts when available. Also improve UI to make text more readable like have a bubble like layer to display text.
headphone/mic
While listening to music, if we get a call it requires us to unplug the headphones to speak on phone. That should be fixed to use the mic on phone.
Lock/Unlock
When on call, the power button should work as screen lock instead of ending the call.
The center Home button should not turn on display when pressed. This is making the display turn on/off constantly when you have phone in pant pocket and is probably draining the battery.
Plus most of the items already listed...
my wishlist:
- increase call volume
- cure wifi bug where wifi drops when the phone loses the mobile network signal
Mediascape
- put in an equalizer
- allow forward/rewind of tracks via the volume rockers when screen is off, just like on all other SE phones
PIM
- make Contacts show birthdays
- then allow Calendar to import birthdays from Contacts!
- incorporate tasks ( and please allow repeatable tasks) into Calendar
- cure Google Calendar sync issues (i have NEVER been able to sync with Google Calendar as yet)
^^
all very basic PIM stuff, although i realize that this is more a Google issue than an SE one
otherwise, i LOVE my X10. a fantastic piece of kit!

Possible Improvements to Evo via Software

I'd like this thread to be a repository for ideas on software improvements to our Evos. Let's try to keep it specific, on topic, and limited to things that are possible with software changes via kernels, ROMS, or model specific apps. Please don't suggest vague things like "Make XXX better". I will update this post as necessary as items are added or crossed off either due to them being fulfilled or deemed impossible.
Interface
-Make activation area for four bottom soft keys smaller to lessen accidental touches
-Screen wakeup with volume button in addition to power button
-Add reboot to power button options
=> Another option has been discovered http://androidforums.com/tips-trick...e-way-reboot-evo-using-hard-buttons-only.html
-Add power off to long press on power button if screen is awake
-Option to enable 270/360 degree rotation of UI via accelerometer
=> 270 is supposedly in the works for CM6
-Output entire interface via HDMI
=> Bounty thread, no work yet http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721376
-Soft directional keyboard, configurable, always on top for use in Flash games and other applications
=> Discussion http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7178242
Audio
-Enable higher bitrate for recording via voice recorder and video recorder
-Enable other (better) codecs for recording via voice recorder and video recorder
-Disable/Optional AGC (automatic gain control) on microphone input
-Improve Bluetooth audio stack for "higher quality" => Needs more details
-Add FLAC codec support
-Add ALAC codec support
-Add equalizer
Camera

I think that's a decent start. Hopefully we get some interest here and generate enough ideas to keep the devs (and maybe even HTC) busy.

you can already do that with the "no lock" widget. the only trouble is it disables the lock screen. that's not much of a problem for me though. and you can reaenable it with a nice toggle widget on the screen for times you want the screen to lock. (when in a pocket)

Then that isn't exactly a "fix".
Just an FYI. I found a great app for rooted phones that provides shortcuts to allow you to reboot your phone into:
1) Standard Boot
2) Recovery
3) Bootloader.
I just leave it far out of the way so that I don't hit it accidentally.
It's called "Quick Boot" and available in the Market.
Glad to have this all in 1 place.
Make sure to add links to the works in progress.
We should add a fix for camera grain & general quality.
For the first time in the history of this forum I'm gonna recommended that this be put in dev.
Swyped from my Evo 4G
Hey, OP, Edit this in under the Audio section....this is by far my biggest disappointment with this unity, as my Samsung Moment took care of this beautifully...
Disable/Optional AGC (automatic gain control) on microphone input.
My Moment had an option to disable it for recording. I had recorded my band's (extremely loud) practices with my Moment and the recordings were absolutely fantastic for a single piezo mic in an imperfect room under extreme SPL torture. I've been recording for nearly 17 years now, with real equipment...but it's so handy to have a rather capable CD quality recorder in your pocket.
download "hertz", or another audio recorder. We can do CD quality (44.1khz 16-bit mono) as it is... but with the AGC on it pumps and breaths and sounds completely terrible...even for voice recordings.
Wow, great list! Video and audio recording quality at the top of the list for me. FM Transmitter huh? Didn't even know it had one!
I'd like to see built-in settings for the camera that are easily accessible. Preset configurations for brightness, white balance, iso, etc for certain shots. (ie. outdoor, night, people) Even if we couldn't get preset settings, a way to save settings and easily load them would be nice.
I like the idea of making the volume button the shutter. Would it be possible to make the power button function as the shutter when in camera/camcorder mode, and have the volume rocker zoom in/out?
well it'd defiantly be nice for any of these issues to be addressed. Thanks for putting up a wish list OP, helps keep everything organized.
Ability to use a BT keyboard with Android Terminal or general text entry.
How about a fixed/updated/replaced BT Audio stack for higher quality?
Forced FLAC/ALAC support (Yes, this is supposed to be coming in Gingerbread, but having it now in Eclair/Froyo would be good!)
I like all the others but I disagree with the 360 rotation, I stopped using fresh because the 270 rotation.

Yep, keep that the way it is! Or optional, because 270 already sucks 360 is even worse.
How are we supposed to tap away on our screens while lying sideways in bed?
This could be added.

Also this could be altered.

To include color change but more importantly dimming and brightening of the leds, specifically to help with light bleed issues.
If my bottom keys were just a tad less bright i wouldn't want to replace the phone so badly.
So far looks great!
If all these were resolved I would love my Evo so much more.

This is a little vague. Do you have or know specifics? Improve bitrate? Improve response time? Lower noise floor? I'll leave it the way it is for now but lets try to firm it up a bit.
Updates have been made.
Cut & Paste
I'd like a reliable consistent method to cut & paste selected text.
I've found the the "long tap" method of bringing up a cut or paste tool does not work in all cases. I want to be able to cut text from emails, web sites, etc - no matter which app I use to view this text. Similarly, I want to be able to paste text into emails, the URL window in the browser, misc text fields, etc. The "long tap" method works only in some cases.
I want to cut selected text / words - not entire paragraphs. Sometimes I get a tool that helps do this (Sense?), other times not.
Also, this may sound stupid but holding down one of the soft keyboard's arrow keys should keep moving the cursor.
Shouldn't need to click 100 times to get from one side of a sentence to another LOL.
This should've been included already..
After holding for a second or so it starts going automatically until you release.
So what things do we need to update now that 2.2 is here and we've had a chance to play with it for a while?
What should we cross off and what should we add?
I would love to see an EQ for the sense music player.
I am completely stock on the .6 update. So far, I noticed that:
1) In the camera app> switching to front facing camera> undoing mirror mode...
It works great in landscape mode, but turn it vertical and it shows you upside down!
2) Regarding music, I only use Pandora so far. The experience was good on 2.1 and now sucks on the .3 and .6 updates:
2a) Even in high quality mode and plugged right into my car's aux input, the sound is pretty bad. The highs are too high, and the low frequencies are muffled and distorted sounding - this is without even taking the sound system to the limit. I am not just talking about fine tuning this sound - it has a long way to go. This sound is way off even for "normal people" listening. Also, yes it should have an EQ, or at least a bunch of preset EQ's for different music styles.
2b) Pandora used to just pause during a phone car or while using nav. Then, it would resume. Since the .3 update, and now even on the .6 update, it pauses Pandora and then I have to go back to Pandora and click play again.
3) Also regarding navigation, It is a pain in the ass that you have to hit the "GPS" switch widget and then open nav. Also, if you turn off the "GPS" switch widget but leave nav on, nav won't shut itself off. Then, you go back to nav to shut if off.. it makes you turn on GPS again, and then go back to nav to officially say "exit navigation". Then, you STILL have to go back to the GPS widget and turn it off!
4) Text messages are very useful for acquiring an address or email address. When getting one through text, I can not copy the info to move to nav or email. I have to go to forward, then copy (and I cant even copy just what I want - I have to copy all, including "FWD:") Then I have to cancel the forward, and then paste it where I need it. We should be able to copy whatever we want, including in texts.
1. stop compressing mms pics so much
2. Where the hell is iTunes streaming?? I thought google was going to release it with froyo.. as well as a music, video and online market. I'm not seeing more than a demo market that shows some top apps
3. Add a native eq... at least give some presets, though a graphic eq would be awesome
4. stop being so lazy htc and work on these things.

The new features that froyo brings to sgs

From what I can gather based on my experience of the leaked Froyo ROMs, the next official Galaxy update is likely to bring the following features not yet found on the official 2.1 ROMS (e.g. JM1)
- Overall Improved speed with optimised JIT (just in time) compiler
- Flash 10.1 support
- Android browser to get new JavaScript engine (version 8) to make web rendering even faster
- Improved bookmarks in Browser with option to organise into folders
- Improved window switching in Browser with thumbnail view
- Extra 'Auto-rotate' toggle in notification pull down
- Better copy/paste selection with 'magnifier' and handle to adjust selection. You can also instantly share the text by email/sms via a pop-up option.
- Native screenshot capture (hold back button, then press menu)
- Switch off mobile data connection through 'power-off' menu (hold power button)
- Option to use pin/password instead of pattern as security lock
- Multi-tasking: Access to last 8 used apps in task manager instead of 6
- New Google Search widget with ability to filter searching to web, just phone etc
- Improved Google Market with 'Update All' apps function (rather than individually update each app)
- Google Android Mobile AP hotspot (as opposed to Samsung's mobile AP app)
- Improved GoogleMail app with previous and next buttons.
- Auto rotation goes to landscape view in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions Edit: Seems to be already available in most 2.1 roms
- Pinch-to-zoom panel overview (see an overview of all your homescreens and your app drawer)
- Bluetooth Human Interface Device (HID) profile support for external keyboards, mice, controllers
- Upgraded swype keyboard
- video player interface displays battery status and has share option
- Video recording in .MP4 container with AAC instead of .3GP
- Extra button on Camera App main screen to switch between rear/front cameras
- Improved music player & sound quality. Refined equaliser and 5.1 surround effect
- Google C2DM 'Cloud' pushing service opened for 3rd party apps
- 'Smart Alarm' with added snooze function
- Option to end call with physical power button (set through Accessibility menu)
- Improved Contacts and Dialer apps
- Ability to add Google Groups contacts into phone's contacts app
Please can you add to the list if you know of any more. It would be preferable to keep the list restricted to 'features' rather than bug fixes (e.g. fixed GPS, lag etc)
- there a little needle in the text to select where you want to put the cursor (like iOS's magnifier)

Unless I misunderstood you, it's already possible to select any text from a web page. Push Menu and go to "More..." - there's an option to "Select text".
(It could use some improvement though.)
And hopefully the possibility to add a exchange 2003 account! Because for a business user it makes no sense to buy a Galaxy if this isn't possible. With an old HTC Hero it was easy but somehow Samsung managed to disable this...
did it already had pinch to zoom on the homescreen ?? ?
What about dialing by name instead of going to contact and then search? I'm still trying to get used to android after years of blackberry. Somehow it seems there's too much clicking here and there to do a simple call or sms.

Ah, I see. Thanks for that.
I tried that on a random webpage (BBC News) and it was incredibely hard to make a measured selection - sometimes it would select the whole paragraph, sometimes it wouldn't register the touch. But looks like 2.2 greatly improves it with the long-press 'magnifier' selection.

On my current firmware (2.1 JM8), if you type the first few letters of a contact in the dialpad it brings up all those who match it.
Or from your contact list or Call Log list or Favourites, you can swipe right across the name to call, or swipe left across the name to send sms.
HID support for Bluetooth devices
I don't agree. Jit is major and if it was going to come in the official update we would have already seen it in the leaked builds.

Why do I already have this on my 2.1 DXJG4?
Very good point. Maybe not so 'likely' then unless Samsung somehow unveil a trump card. (no harm dreaming, lol)
I'm using JPK and sadly to say it still lags, for me GPS seemed to be fixed, it can detect my location quickly but still not exactly (approximately 100m distance from me).
The built-in Samsung's Task Manager is too weak, it even cannot ignore apps which you dont want to kill, so you have to kill all active apps or kill each of them separately.
Wait so 2.2 isn't going to be faster cos there will be no JIT? Will this be the only android 2.2 phone without it?

My SGS has done this since day 1, are there some out there that don't?

No one here knows the answer to that question, unless we've got an incognito Samsung employee or two posting... what we do know is that JIT is enabled in the leaked Froyo build for the Captivate, but it has not yet been optimised for SGS' processor. And that it wasn't enabled in leaked builds for the GT-I9000.
Like the rest of us, you'll just have to wait and see.
That is strange. My phone only used to go landscape anti-clockwise but never clockwise on JF3 firmware, and it was only when I flashed JPC that it did both ways. It also works on 2.1 JM8 although JM8 is not official released by Samsung through Kies.
If it should've worked on JF3, then maybe my sensor got calibrated somehow when I flashed to a later firmware... Odd.
What makes you think JIT isn't coming or hasn't come.. Linpack doesn't test for JIT, it tests a specific test case.
if my sources are right, they say that jit is enabled but not optimized for our processor yet.

what Windows Phones OS is missing

1- Windows Phone 8 Lackings
a) Items that Must be in a Mobile OS which Windows Phone Missing
• Call duration information is not exist in OS (I still can't believe)
• There is No Notification center. If you miss it to see. You miss it.
• Folderizing those bunch list of application list cannot be scrolled faster. And I believe it should have been foldered.
• Photos doesn’t have custom folders. It supposed to be added for customization and also a security key would be good.
• There is no Sound profiles center you need to close vibrating in a long way from settings/sounds.
• Google apps are missing including YouTube at all. No Google apps is something really to be sad.
• Percentage for battery level is not exist natively.
• GPS toggle does not exist so location finding is not working in airplane mod. GPS doesn't work even if you downloaded offline maps and turned wifi on. You need to have cellular signal to make GPS on. So definitely GPS toggle must be build.
• Location center should be letting user to choose which application can use which not.. It is just one option to be on n off..
And somehow periodically I see location icon on top even those map and location background are fully limited, and I can't see what application is currently using my location. And this makes me feel phone is going against my privacy.
• When theme color is changed, OS based native tiles is changing color instantly but the Tiles that have been created by applications, doesn't change color unless being run once. And you need to open all those apps to update new theme color.
• Skype is fully buggy that doesn't let video chat. Neither doesn't work in background fully online. Cannot call online iphone users etc.. It may not be considered as developed application.
• Whatsapp is buggy. Developer said that it’s because of windows platform and porting issues. If you lock screen in whatsapp there won't be any new notification, you need to check it manual. This is so annoying. So after you write you need to leave application. And lock phone to receive notifications. Also It can't send any picture from screen shots. Additional when you return back to application it always needs to be loaded and makes you waited 3 seconds every time which is a huge time that being wasted.
• Cannot close applications. Windows Phone OS cannot close any application. You need to hammer back button 15 times to resume beginning. But somehow also it’s not enough in some cases. There are some apps that asks to be exit and needs confirmations. Some apps directly being closed , some apps goes back inside its navigation like IE n Flickr until start page and then being closed. So Windows phone does not have ability to close app in one standard way.
• In the messaging and, email There is no “Select all option” ... u need to select one by one each mail or message to erase
• I don't know outside my country but in computer when I open find my phone service that never works. It doesn't work at all. Even it is turned on settings. Nokia asked me to ask it Microsoft. And Microsoft didn't reply me. I think for some countries location services doesn't work. In Turkey it does not work.
• Phone alarm should have been working even phone is turned off.
• Text writing should have undo with shaking, sometimes when using shortcut words over keyboard if you press wrong word u cannot go back and fix it so need to re write all. Shake left should make undo which is not exist currently..
• Phone storage does not show you size of application music and pictures. Just there is one cumulative bar which is so useless to show overall instead of separating each kind.
• Where I spend the battery? U won’t know where. This should be adapted because there are lots of people discussing it in forums that battery levels are normal if not for what reason. And since it is new OS and we all end users are behaved like testers, we need to make, things certain.
• Wi-Fi saved passwords or rest of other password doesn't being seen again even there is a thick that says “show password”. There is this option but completely in functional and doesn’t let you to see passwords.
• 3rd party music or video downloader apps makes its work. But those downloaded music’s are not being able to reach from native music applications. It just stays in the 3rd party applications library and can be reach from it. Native windows music player should have been reach all mp3 which is downloaded.
• Rotation option doesn't exist. It is mandatory to be rotated if u hold it horizontally. And it makes phone so un stable in bed when writing. That is so annoying that phone doesn't has this option. It is mandatory to use it vertical.
• When typing text in a text box, there is no standard to how to hide keyboard. Every app works different. You cannot say a certain way to hide keyboard, and scroll to see what has been written. Also scrolling doesn't have a standard way either. Also, Text assisting, words are appearing in some apps, but not appearing in some. It doesn’t have standard too. There should have been one way for everything!
• Physical search button should be configured to run a search application which can be change into Google yahoo etc.. Also search button same time should have been looking email contents and apps
• Random reboots. I can't believe that happens almost every 3 days once and it has been reported more often, with some series..
b) Optional Additions
• There is no Instagram
• Multitasking gestures
• Unable to find enough local apps for turkey,
• Dropbox would be nice addition
• Lock button and keyboard click sound is bad for me. Should be personalized
• Even it has graphics card, which game, exist to use it. We almost don't have a nice 3d game, to be impressed with graphics.
• There is no live tile that shows clock, and date same as HTC does. Also it would be good if native clock app live tile enhanced including selected city times rotating in tile.
• Since start menu is customizable with a theme color , all applications must have been force a icon color weather is native or theme color and user should pick it up how to be.
• Screen brightness is just tree Level doesn't let to make a fine setting. And long way to reach from settings, menu.
• People hub tile should be have an option to show people profile pics or not. Sometimes in formal situations, on the phone stupid profile pics makes me shame.. Also favorite persons should,be included. I don't,want to see some,of ppl there, and I don't,get in,what logic ppl hub selects those ppl
• There is Turkish language support,
There is Turkish keyboard
There is Turkish keyboard assistant
But there, is no voice command for, Turkish language. Downloadable content for languages is just a few. This technology is not completed for many.
Not only voice command but also
Bing search doesn't exist on my native language.

Wow... very stright forward. I hope Microsoft will read your suggestion and build an update as soon as possible
My two cents:
Very detailed, however, have to reply to some of these.
1- Windows Phone 8 Lackings
a) Items that Must be in a Mobile OS which Windows Phone Missing
• Call duration information is not exist in OS (I still can't believe) - I always wondered what this was for. It never mattered to me how long I spoe with someone, I am not paying by the minute. The fact that its not here is a bonus for me.
• There is No Notification center. If you miss it to see. You miss it. - Again, whats the big deal?! It was nice on my android phone, but I really dont miss it. The live tiles take care of all my notification issues.
• Folderizing those bunch list of application list cannot be scrolled faster. And I believe it should have been foldered. - Isn't it?! Just press the letter, and you get a list of the letter, tap it and it takes you there. Very fast in my book!
• Photos doesn’t have custom folders. It supposed to be added for customization and also a security key would be good. - I use skydrive for my photos, and its easy to set up custom folders. Security key should be your phones security password.
• There is no Sound profiles center you need to close vibrating in a long way from settings/sounds. - No, if you set your phones settings once to include vibration, just tap your volume once, the toast notificaiton will pop up, press where it says "vibrate & ring", it will switch to "vibrate". Thats what I do. One volume rock and one tap, I am silent.
• Google apps are missing including YouTube at all. No Google apps is something really to be sad. - Again, prefrence. Don't really use google apps that much, so not missing them.
• Percentage for battery level is not exist natively. - yea, thats one thing I wouldn't mind seeing.
• GPS toggle does not exist so location finding is not working in airplane mod. GPS doesn't work even if you downloaded offline maps and turned wifi on. You need to have cellular signal to make GPS on. So definitely GPS toggle must be build. - Haven't tried using GPS when in airplane mode. NEver switch my phone to Airplane mode.

And this makes me feel phone is going against my privacy. - You shouldb e able to set that when you initially start or download the app, it asks if they can use your location. Otherwise, I don't have any problem with it, got nothing to hide, so you can see where I go anytime!
• When theme color is changed, OS based native tiles is changing color instantly but the Tiles that have been created by applications, doesn't change color unless being run once. And you need to open all those apps to update new theme color. - Yea, I guess, don't really notice that.
• Skype is fully buggy that doesn't let video chat. Neither doesn't work in background fully online. Cannot call online iphone users etc.. It may not be considered as developed application. - Haven't used Skype yet, maybe one day.
-Dont have that app.
- Yea, that could be alot easier to handle.
• In the messaging and, email There is no “Select all option” ... u need to select one by one each mail or message to erase -Again, don't really notice that. I don't let my emails pile up to the point I need to select all to get rid of them. Once I read, they are filed or deleted. No need to leave them there taking up space.
• I don't know outside my country but in computer when I open find my phone service that never works. It doesn't work at all. Even it is turned on settings. Nokia asked me to ask it Microsoft. And Microsoft didn't reply me. I think for some countries location services doesn't work. In Turkey it does not work.-Not using Nokia, so not sure about this one.
• Phone alarm should have been working even phone is turned off. - I don't think this is a possibility with any system, phone, or OS. Once the phone is off, its off. Now, if your turning your phone to sleep, or hibernate, then it should still work. Otherwise, powered off is powered off. Thats like wanting your car off, but as soon as you get in and hit the gas it magically comes to life and starts driving.
• Text writing should have undo with shaking, sometimes when using shortcut words over keyboard if you press wrong word u cannot go back and fix it so need to re write all. Shake left should make undo which is not exist currently.. - Uhmm, I hate having to shake my phone to make it do anything. If I have to shake it, then something is wrong with it. Just my opinion.
• Phone storage does not show you size of application music and pictures. Just there is one cumulative bar which is so useless to show overall instead of separating each kind. - Yea, that would be nice, but I don't miss it.
• Where I spend the battery? U won’t know where. This should be adapted because there are lots of people discussing it in forums that battery levels are normal if not for what reason. And since it is new OS and we all end users are behaved like testers, we need to make, things certain. - Again, knowing what is sucking up your battery is a nice touch, and although I thought it was usefull when I had an android, I don't miss it. My 8X doesnt suck up enough battery power to be a concern.
• Wi-Fi saved passwords or rest of other password doesn't being seen again even there is a thick that says “show password”. There is this option but completely in functional and doesn’t let you to see passwords. - That would be nice!
• 3rd party music or video downloader apps makes its work. But those downloaded music’s are not being able to reach from native music applications. It just stays in the 3rd party applications library and can be reach from it. Native windows music player should have been reach all mp3 which is downloaded.- I am able to watch, listen to, whatever with all my local downloaded music and movies. No need for a 3rd party app.
• Rotation option doesn't exist. It is mandatory to be rotated if u hold it horizontally. And it makes phone so un stable in bed when writing. That is so annoying that phone doesn't has this option. It is mandatory to use it vertical. - This would be a nice touch, but not one I feel is a mandatory missing item. I can live without it.
- You would have to talk to the app creater, thats not something controled by Windows. And I find no matter what I am doing, hitting the back button once, away goes keyboard. Every app lets me do that.
• Physical search button should be configured to run a search application which can be change into Google yahoo etc.. Also search button same time should have been looking email contents and apps - Yes, local search would be nice, not just web
• Random reboots. I can't believe that happens almost every 3 days once and it has been reported more often, with some series.. - I only rebooted the day I purchased it, otherwise, no issues there!
b) Optional Additions
• There is no Instagram - Dont use it
• Multitasking gestures - Good lord, don't need it! Simple is the way!
• Unable to find enough local apps for turkey, - Sorry
• Dropbox would be nice addition - Again, don't use it
• Lock button and keyboard click sound is bad for me. Should be personalized - Yea, that would be nice
• Even it has graphics card, which game, exist to use it. We almost don't have a nice 3d game, to be impressed with graphics. - Uhmm, don't know about this one
• There is no live tile that shows clock, and date same as HTC does. Also it would be good if native clock app live tile enhanced including selected city times rotating in tile. - Thats why I like HTC!
• Since start menu is customizable with a theme color , all applications must have been force a icon color weather is native or theme color and user should pick it up how to be. - Again, talk to the app creator, not windows.
• Screen brightness is just tree Level doesn't let to make a fine setting. And long way to reach from settings, menu. - Yea, thats true!
• People hub tile should be have an option to show people profile pics or not. Sometimes in formal situations, on the phone stupid profile pics makes me shame.. Also favorite persons should,be included. I don't,want to see some,of ppl there, and I don't,get in,what logic ppl hub selects those ppl - Unfortunatly, all my pics are decent and safe for work
• There is Turkish language support,
There is Turkish keyboard
There is Turkish keyboard assistant
But there, is no voice command for, Turkish language. Downloadable content for languages is just a few. This technology is not completed for many.
Not only voice command but also
Bing search doesn't exist on my native language.
So thats my two cents!
If the keyboard is displayed simply press the back Button and it will be hidden. Works in any App.
As for the Live Tiles changing Color automatically with changes of the theme color. It is possible to be done with transparent Images but due to the problematic nature of saving those dynamically in WP7 most Devs render an Image with the current Background Color and Display that on the tile. If you want that bevhavior to change contact the developer.
The Alarm doesn't work when the device is turned off on Android or iOS as well. Symbian was the only notable exception of a Smartphone OS that did Support it. As for a wrong auto-completed word: simply tap the word and select your original Input or another Suggestion. Works for me without Problems.
If you enter Settings and look at phone Memory and then tap onto the bar that Displays how much free space you currently have it opens up a detailed view on what is taking how much Memory. At least it does on my Lumia 920.
As for the Button "Show Wifi Password" - it works similarily to the Show Password Buttons in Windows 8. They exist to allow you to have a look at the Password that you just entered/are just entering to check it for typing errors. It does work then. After you saved the Password you won't be able to retrieve it in this way for security reasons. The Buttons are not broken but work as designed.
I won't answer all the other Points. I agree with some but disagree with others but I wanted to provide some help and some context on what can be done and why some things behave the way they do.

I would like to have this option. Sometimes when I'm on a business call I need to know how long I was on the call for. You can say to use a timer or check the time before and after the call but that's extra work that the phone should be able to handle. There's enough other things to juggle during a busy day! Right now I just have to go online and check my account after 24 hours to record my time.

Great idea, but it would be nice to create folders on the phone instead of finding someplace else - computer, web browser, etc. All photo folder customization needs to be done outside of the app. It would be nice to set a default folder when taking pictures or saving pictures. Everything just goes into Saved Pictures or Camera Roll and then has to be organized later.

His point here is turning off vibrate, not turning off sound. Most of the time I like having vibrate on but during a meeting, not only do I want the phone silent, but I also want vibrate off. No way to do this unless you manually go into settings.

Yes, the first time you use an app it asked you about location. How do you turn off (or on?) that permission after the fact, or see what applications you gave location permissions to? You have to uninstall and reinstall the app to cycle the location permission. Furthermore, reinstalling the app typically loses any data you have. This isn't quite the experience that you should expect. Windows 8 allows you to toggle permissions of Metro apps from the charms bar. No such ability exists in WP8.

I agree on the shaking thing, but it would be nice to have some sort of undo. Occassionally I accidentally hit the wrong word or highlight a word (or sentence) and hit a letter instead of the copy. Suddenly, everything I typed is gone! Even a single-level undo would be nice in cases like this.

Nokia Music is allowed to store items in the WP8 music store, but other 3rd party apps aren't. This is an inconsistency that really needs to be fixed. While you may not use 3rd party apps, there are a lot of nice ones out there and having to figure out workarounds to move the music around is a bit annoying. Personally I haven't had a need to worry about it but locking up the music storage is limiting our choices on what we can do with our own music files.

I see rebooting within 3rd party apps more often now that developers aren't required to use managed code. This is one of the drawbacks of native code. I think the OS should be more capable of protecting against that though. An app really shouldn't kill the OS so easily just because the app is buggy.
On that same note, sometimes when a app crashes you can't open it again unless you restart the OS. This leads me to believe that something is still retained in OS memory. WP8 is essentially like a 1.0 version of the OS though, so there are sure to be issues like this initially. Even though the kernel is the NT kernel, it's new for ARM processors, so it's still a brand new branch of the kernel.

He's talking about the people hub, not the photo hub. If you have your phone connected to Facebook or LinkedIn, the People hub automatically pulls the profile pictures for your contacts. You can argue that you only have contacts on your phone for people that will always have decent, acceptable profile pictures, but can you be 100% sure that will happen? Your choices right now are all or none. You can manually set a profile picture for every contact but that kind of defeats the neatness of the People hub cycling people. It would be nice if you could create a "Favorite People" group of people that you want the hub to show, as well as an "Excluded" group of people that include your pain in the neck brother that's always posting weird profile pics! Similar to the "Favorite Pics" in the photo hub.
Many of these items are similar choice things that would make the overall system better. While I don't agree with having the boatload of customization that Android has (way too messy), I think some simple additions would be nice.
On the subject of lock codes... I understand that some people would want additional security for photos or messages and things like that, but I think having separate codes for all of that is too much. If you need to be that secret, just lock your phone and don't let anyone use it!
I like the idea of the kid's corner and would like MS to expand on that to allow you to create a sandbox that would allow someone to use your phone, play games, make phone calls, without having your security code. Right now, if you have a security code, the kid's corner also has the same security code. Kids are smart! If you're unlocking your phone in front of them, they WILL notice your code eventually. Even the Android "move your finger around" security is a joke. It's fairly easy to watch someone (with the phone turned away from you) and pretty much tell by movement of their hand.
We've all learned workarounds for some of the items on this list and can say that we don't really care, but the truth is, if we have to constantly come up with workarounds, then the OS is missing something. Call Duration, Better Live Tile customization (such as the People Hub idea), better/easier sound/ring customization, etc.
Also, on the Live tiles. I think the medium tile is too big and the small tile isn't big enough for any detail. Coming from WP7, I'm so glad we don't have to have all "medium tiles" now, especially with a large (4.3+) screen. I just don't know how best to deal with this without making it too complicated.

ACtually, I found that it does time the call, when I just hung up with my wife, it showed call duration just above her name, so I would say it does it. that being said, it doesn't 'record' it for later retrieval, so I see the point your making.
His point here is turning off vibrate, not turning off sound. Most of the time I like having vibrate on but during a meeting, not only do I want the phone silent, but I also want vibrate off. No way to do this unless you manually go into settings.
Gotcha, but if you don't use sound, strictly vibrate, then instead of turning on sound and vibrate in the settings once, you would only turn on vibrate. Then, you could either silence or vibrate when you select the toast. Of course, if you want sound and vibrate, yes, you would have to go into settings.
Yes, the first time you use an app it asked you about location. How do you turn off (or on?) that permission after the fact, or see what applications you gave location permissions to? I am not sure about that. I just checked 3 apps and could turn off location services. So maybe its app based on wether you can or cannot undo location services.

I agree, I remember my daughter on her kindle was surprised I could access it. She was surprised how easy it was to monitor her swipe to get an idea of her access. What I don't like about kids corner is the turn off to access your stuff. Should have the same ability to swipe back to the lock screen

See my responses in bold.
But I do have to say coming from a flashaholic Thunderbolt, the fact that I 'can't do as much' is a breath of fresh air. It is just nice having a simple, easy uncluttered OS to deal with. I had a friend running an TB unrooted, and he went with an S3 about the same time I went to WP8, and watching him use his, I really cringe looking at his screen. I look at mine and think - Ah, simpleton, thats me! And I am happy! Its all right here, no need to open this or click that to get to there. Just turn on, unlock, and blip, there it is.
You are correct that in a sense, this is WP8 V1, and I am sure as it gets more and more active, we will begin to see some of those simple things come into play.
My only real gripe, how difficult it is to make a playlist. But at least what I do have sounds fantastic!
My name is Jerry, and this is my Windows phone!

Just a few more comments... I think the location service you can't change are the ones that use it only for ads. I've checked a few and don't see anywhere to toggle it. I don't mind ads but I'm not a big fan of targeted ads. Much like ad cookies, it's just really a personal preference.
Thanks for the tip on the call duration.
I agree with you as well! Having a phone that just *works* and is simple to use has been great! I wouldn't trade it for any OS right now. I look forward to next week and MWC to see what the next updates/phones might be!

Uh huh. You do realise this is a MSFT product? It's like asking Android to provide bing search. Phone search would be nice though.

Get a HTC phone if you really want that. Or enjoy your Nokia exclusives. Damn, I really want them.

There is Turkish keyboard
There is Turkish keyboard assistant
But there, is no voice command for, Turkish language. Downloadable content for languages is just a few. This technology is not completed for many.
Not only voice command but also
Bing search doesn't exist on my native language.

Bug MSFT I guess
Windows Phone 8 was blessed as a Business OS. But thats not true!
There are missing still some important features like:
- Better calender view (weekly view)
- VPN
- signing e-mails ( S/MIME)
-encypt and decrypt mails
We are currentyl using WP7/WP8 (Lumia 900/Lumia 820) and Blackberry Devices in our Company. Since signing E-Mail is a must have in our Company we are not able to read our mail or attachemnts on our WP Devices.
With every other devices like Android, Iphone and Blackkberry is this possible but not with a Windows Phone 7/8. 2 year before i had talked to MS about this problem (good relationship in Austria) but there is still no solution for this.
I´m so sorry for this but we have now to Switch back to Blackberrys and Android Phones... :crying:
We are now waiting for the new BB Generation. In the next weeks i will upgrade our BES to BES 10
Hopefully MS will release this functionalities with the next update...
Privately i will stay with Windows Phone...
its missing an Office Suite with any functionality at all
How is Microsoft not going to have an Office suite, when both Android & iPhone have Office suites which rival the Full Office suite, both creating & editing MICROSOFT PPT, PPTX, DOC, DOCX, XLS, & XLSX, with more functions than you can imagine ...
microcrap includes a blank office page with 2 retarded options and no other functionality at all
can someone please shoot those people so they can rehire smarter employees?

i need separate volume for ringtone / media / etc . (like android)
Things that WP 8 needs from my point of view as a user (seperate from IT policies that can be implimented). I have a Nokia 810 btw...
1. Alphanumeric password support. That 4 digit pin crap has GOT TO GO.
2. Full device encryption ahh the good old days of WM 6.5.X
3. Device search
4. A DEDICATED PHONEBOOK. I do not want all of my facebook, skype, etc contacts listed in with my phone book. That just plain sucks. To avoid this I use the seperate FB and Skype and TANGO (when available) apps.
5. ability to choose background colors other than black or white in addition to more foreground color choices
6. Can we please crank up the volume of the handset? how I miss my HD2 and it's annoyingly loud alarm clock...
7. Task Manager anyone? Pressing back all the time is kind of stupid...
Lilttle things I would like Nokia to include:
1. Compass
2. Flashlight
3. Ability to connect to my phone at Wireless N speeds with my PC (G? really? in 2K13? come on now...LTE will be able to completely saturate that interface)
1. VPN
2. Task Manager
3. App to SD (For any device SDCard Support)
4. Read first post...
Sent from my Windows Phone 8S by HTC using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I was going to buy a Wp8 Device but i just read this thread and i say to my self. what the hell is going on .

Aside from colors and task manager(which is not needed anyway), you need a heavy dose of "learn to use a windows phone" my friend.
In fact, over half of the things "missing" are present and accounted for, you just need to look closer.
So, instead of QQing, how about you look in the phone settings, or...you know...USE the marketplace?
app2sd
some customization options
more popular apps (for services like catch notes, which i missing so much on wp8)/or more indie games from iphone/android devs ;/
normal SKYPE.. oh microsoft

Doesn't this work on your phone?
Settings, Applications, people, filter my contact list
And then uncheck everything except your primary contact list?
I find the biggest issue for me as a windows phone user [from the HD7 to the 810] is the still remarkably poor offerings. So apps aren't even present like Hulu, some are covered by third party providers [youtube - metrotube] and there is a good selection of games. The app market is the single biggest handy cap that the OS has atm and that's needs to be fixed.
Apps I use;
Battery Meter Pro [Provides a live tile with icon and % of battery]
Metrotube [an actual youtube client not a browser shortcut]
Amazing Weather HD [provides a live tile with updated weather]
Facebook for WP8 [more common android looking facebook app]
MediaFire Manager [file storage]
Skydrive [MS provided - there are dropbox apps too I just don't use it]
PinInterest [an actual client for viewing PinInterest]
PAypal
Ebay
Skype [VoIP]
Snes8x [The only emulator atm]
tumblr.viewer [an actual client to view your tumblr account - no downloads though]
Weave News Reader [like androids pulse news reader]
WiFi Live Tile [provides a live tile with information on wifi strength and goes straight to settings]
Tankopedia [World of Tanks information - wiki as a client]
World of Tanks Assistant
WoW Companion [MoP Compatiable WoW Armory app]
Touchmouse [makes the phone a mouse for computers]
Flashlight [Pro version, gives a live tile to quickly turn the flash on]
Crackle [like hulu, not so much selection though]
BBC News
Cellular Live Tiles [gives signal strength, Data info and goes directly to settings when clicked]
Netflix
The three apps I am missing atm is Hulu, a stand alone movie player and Teamspeak.
Battery lasts most of my days use, with an occasional charging here and there. The rest of the settings are easy enough to get too, the letter management in the app list makes it very quick to get to apps you want [just got to get used to it] and very seldom see a reboot [about as often as my Samsung S3 does actually.
