How does the pen work? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

I mean the button on the pen actually.... I think...
How does the button communicate with the phone? Must be some sort of NFC or so?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

Via Digitizer, like a Wacom graphic tablet.

ok, thanks

It can be much simpler than an RF thing.
If the pen just has a variable capacitor which value depends on the button (on : low, off :high) then the screen can recognize the two states pretty easily.
Very cheap and very reliable.

Oh... does this appear somewhere in the ICS specs ?
If not, well probably no ICS for the Note....

ICS has been officially confirmed for the GNote by Samsung, FYI.

Ah, the Italians.....
I don't believe it.
I hope I am wrong....

It would be a PR disaster for them if they came out with a phone like that and didn't allow for an upgrade path. We'll get ICS on it soon enough.

umm whats ICS? lol

You sure could, however it's already a standard function of most EMR styli.
Basically, the screen has some coils under it that when turned on power the pen by induction. They then switch off and the pen generates it's own magnetic field that makes a current in the coils, and a little processor calculates the pen's position (very accurately, orders of magnitude moreso than a capacitive digitizer) by which coils get lit-up. The pen can also send information like button presses, pressure, tilt and angle at the same time.

Also don't forget; ICS has support for pressure sensitive screens.

It's already confirmed by samsung Italy that it will receive ICS, so I don't see why we are discussing/arguing about it anyway!

Where is the official Samsung announcement?

Nope. There are tablets, but no phones.

Tablet Stylii also work with GN
I just received a Toshiba tablet stylus the size of a ballpoint pen that works perfectly with the note. The eraser also works.

Forgive the silly question, but keeping the capacitive buttons offers us more real estate, correct? The GNex can get away with having on-screen buttons since the screen itself is like 4.7", not 4" like the Epic...
Beyond the aesthetic value, is there something I'm missing related to the capacitive buttons?

I think it'll just come down to preference. Some people just like the idea of the on-screen buttons, even if it takes up some space.

This whole concept of a phone being sexy is foreign to me. I'm not judging either way, just not sure how I could think of my phone as Sexy... Maybe if I gave it a name?

i only get bugged about is my damn "FAT BATTERY" they say stupid things like " OMG like your phone is too huge" or "that's ugly as hell" whats funny as hell when i don't have my charger by my side 24/7 because i can along time with having to recharge it.
Lol well if the sgs 3'sbattery is the same as the epic 2 and ours then ill prolly be swiping one of those 2100 mah or the extended ones that will come i can see up to 4000 mah if the battery as big as ours will start off at 2100 mah

I can see this to get the task switcher button. Holding the home button only works 50/50 for me as it will think I let up and just pushed it rather than hold it. May be worth losing the screen real-estate to improve multi-tasking.
It really isnt that much heres what you do set ur default screen density to 320 like the gnex then reboot clear the market data press accept then change the screen density to 200 so that it feels a little higher res this will make up for the loss in real estate.

Found something funny!!

If you get a grape and use it as a 'stylus' it actually works, and better, its really accurate too. Thought I should just post this as I found it quite funny

I can see you eating some grapes while using the tablet... then one falls from your hand and bounces against the TF screen... and then you witness some incredibly accurate touch events
Thanks for the tip
Gett a bag of chips and rip the bag and wrap the ripped part around a pen and use a rubber band or tape to wrape it around. Works just like a stylus. No joke. I saw it on life hacks part 1. Lok

Grape is best idea yet
I have a mechanical pencil that some of the internal broke but the exterior is metal. I took one of the yellow kitchen sponges with the green scrubby part on them and stuffed it inside the pencil with a little hanging out the tip. Works great!

Knife used as a stylus on S3

hey guysss here's a video in which a knife is used as a stylus and also used for playing games
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98BYhwR5Y60
Lol It is one of the most useless and idiot things i've ever seen! Very funny though! Ahah The intresting thing is the back button, because, even with the original stylus, it doesn't work! So, why spending a lot of money for a stylus? A knife does exactly the same

please note this also works with machetes, crowbars and an axe, although the latter has to be used with caution due to its weight.

[Touch Screen] Does it support nails & knuckles?

Hi people,
I just wanted to know if the Nexus 4 touch screen support fingernails (like i.e. Galaxy S3).
Anyone with a Nexus 4 could try this for me?
Best Regards,
Sebastian.

Just tried using the backside of my nail on my OG Evo... worked fine. The tip of my nail also works but i suspect the tip of my finger is also barely touching the screen so I angled my finger more extremely so it was only the nail. Still works both ways. That will be disappointing if the N4 touchscreen can't do this...

I'm guessing you don't have an N4 yet, because it absolutely will not register touch via your nails.
also supports knees and elbows
I can confirm that nose, ear (upper and lobe) and toes all work.
Also penis

looked at my power button today and noticed lots of very fine scratches. the phone around the button is perfect. i guess its a fairly soft plastic used for the button.
probably not worth polishing out as it will get into the button.
I've done this twice in the dark. No real harm done
