[Q] [REQUEST] [ICS PORT] WE SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM (Sandwich) - HD2 port possible? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hey,
I'm sure you've seen Beezy's (on AndroidCentral) and DrewGaren's work on a stable ICS port for the Nexus S. Beezy's original ROM for the Nexus S 4G originally comes from a leak-of-sorts of ICS Build 13 (that's the one that was on that Nexus S off eBay a month ago that was all over the Net, Build 14/15 is the final version that's hitting with the Galaxy Nexus), and DrewGaren worked on making it all compatible with the Nexus S 3G and pulling in more newer UI features from the SDK. It seems to be VERY stable as well.
Here's the link to DrewGaren's site: http://drewgaren.com/DrewGaren.com/ICS/ICS.html
And there's also a thread on the Nexus S version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313337
Current version is Beta 4, Beta 5 should be out this weekend, and he claims it's stable enough to be a daily ROM... He's also working on a SDK port for the Nexus S and the Nexus One.
So, the question is, are any of the HD2 devs willing to port this? If it's that stable, it will be a brilliant thing to use on our HD2s until source hits just after Nov 17 (that's when the G-Nex is out in the UK at least, according to Amazon.co.uk) I'm actually impressed how they got a stable (-ish) port out for the Nexus S!

it's here already.. not that perfect but at least you can feel them already before the official release..

Tytung is like the Master when it comes to the Nexus for the HD2. So if the Nexus has a stable enough rom to be use every day I'm sure the HD2 will have it. It will complete the collection. Froyo, Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich.

Actually... i'm curious if the HD2 ever had anything bellow 2.2...

if nexus 1 cant run ICW, i doubt we can.. hoping to get a try of ICW before deciding if i should get the galaxy nexus as my next phone after hd2..

I'm going to disagree with you here, I think you're over looking one big thing. The HD2 wasn't suppose to run Android period, now it does. And... We have a lot of different versions now, like Sense 3.5. If memory serves me, our awesome phone wasn't suppose to run that cause it's for dual core phones, but it does and now we have a graphic's fix for it that smooths everything out. It's just a matter of time and how determined people/devs are.
If someone feels the need to correct me, please do so.

He said IF. And those suspitions come from a google-employee-wannabe that has been spreading FUD long before.
The nexus is more than capable of running ICS, what MIGHT happen, is Google not releasing it officially.
As to the HD2... and the Diamond, and the Fuse, and the Blackcomb... and the Rhodium... and the Vogue... and the Kaiser... and the Polaris... None of them was meant to run Android.
I can't speak for all those devices, i only have a HD2 and a Kaiser... and both of them have a amazing support. On the Kaiser at we're only missing a better power manegement, and camera auto focus. The rest, works as it should.
Kaiser came with WM6.0... it got 6.1 officially..... it got 6.5 unofficially... it got Android unoficially... Ubuntu...
If we're all going to "Don't think about it... the [insert device name here] was not meant to run [insert os here]", XDA would not exist.
Besides... the "it's not possible" or the "it's not going to work" idea... is really really Apple'ish. And they got android on the 3g or 3gs IIRC

Who said Nexus 1 can't run ICS? I'm sure it can. All I've heard is that it will not get an official update to ICS. Screw the official update. This is XDA and everything is possible.

Alot of sources are now saying the source code for ics is being released on the 17th, So not long to wait now!

Ok you need to breathe buddy, it's just been announced it will most probably take a month before it will be available on HTC as they need to incorporate Sense to it.
well if you recall the desire made the jump from 2.1 to 2.2 pretty soon after the 2.2 announcement, considering the DHD is the new flagship phone id imagine a very similar situation if not there is always custom roms
Wonder if cyanogen will publish it before htc that will be sweet

The DHD will most likely be the first HTC handset to receive the update. However, how long this takes is anyone's guess. Then your carrier will modify the update, unless of course you got a stock unbranded DHD.
My money is on Cyanogen, real money. If CM releases 2.3 before HTC I'll donate again.

Nope, the roms can't be made until the source code is released or another device gets it to be ported over.
Roms can be made from the sdk but don't turn out very well to say the least.
I expect an announcement soon from HTC, i doubt they will let their flagship higher specs phone fall short against their direct competitor, classic desire was the first device to get froyo after the nexus
I'm betting on it being out around Christmas time,
Probably in 2 weeks we'll start to get them trickling out...
I hope that dhd will get it as soon as possible, but wouldn't be surprised if Samsung s get's it first considering cooperation of Google with them on new G phone.

Unfortunately the N1 was pretty much the same as the Desire. And was built by HTC. Now the situation is a little bit different having Google cooperating with the plastic-toy manufacturer . Then again I doubt Galaxy S will get 2.3 sooner than the DHD, because they got to 2.2 about a month ago.

Because all it takes is a couple of devs to port it, as it has been with every Android version on pretty much every somewhat popular device. There's just absolutely no reason to assume it's not going to be ported.
lol good call. hopefully dev team up soon!!!
The problem is the source code hasn't been dropped yet, so if it was based off the sdk it'll be slow and have no Google apps, plus it probably wont run well on our screen size.

Well when you run the SDK version in an emulator and optimize for mobile screen res, honeycomb UI reverts back to standard Android UI so maybe it has a built in mobile version.
Ice cream cone is the next update for phones, it won't be long before that's released. Honeycomb does include code for reverting the screen to phone resolution, but from what people can tell, it isn't finished and is probably included as a starting point for future versions where the phone and tablet can both use the same build. Honeycomb probably won't be compatible with phones, at least not now or with a lot of work. A later 3.x version of android may work with both tablets and phones.
what version is the ice cream gonna be and whats the improvement, anyone knows, thanks

no one is really sure, some say 2.4, and some say 3.x, since Honeycomb will supposedly support phones as well, it wouldn't make sense to go backwards in the version numbers, we'll just have to wait and see. .

Ice-cream is definitely 2.4, and Honeycomb is 3.0. Honeycomb is aimed at larger screens (tablets) so may not be suitable for some phones (but it will still run, if you can get it installed). Ice-cream is aimed at phones, not tablets, so it will be easier for devs to port over to the device of their choice (HD2 please ).
You guys act like you know for sure. No offense, but you don't. There has been no official word about HoneyComb on phones and no official word about Ice Cream at all.
It is my opinion that Google would not restrict it's Android versions to a set of numbers (i.e. 2.x for phones, 3.x for tablets.) That would make no sense. It is also my opinion that 2.4 will be Gingerbread still, much like 2.0 and 2.1 were Eclair. I'm guessing a major version change, such as 3.5 or 4.0 will merge the phone and tablet branches into Ice Cream. But I'm not "sure" about anything.
The Dell Streak has had HoneyComb ported to it. It seems like it wouldn't be a stretch to put it on this phone, too, even if it's not meant for a 4.3" screen.

Sometimes it's about the quality of Roms, not necessarily the numbers. Cyanogenmod is the most significant rom since it is built from aosp not ota.
Honeycomb is built for tablets. Sure smartphone version will come but honestly a sdk port isn't worth a daily driver. Well have to see.

Desire HD users have been left out

Hello my fellow HTC Desire HD users and developers.
My name is StJohn, I'm from South Africa.
I'm very dissapointed to see that we have been left behind in the ICS race.
Nexus one users are seeing progress with ICS, along with the desire users, and a couple others. The desire users already have a flashable ZIP...
So heres the big question:
Where is our ICS progress? Is there no developers working on one for us?
The Desire HD hardware is ahead of the desire, so thats not an excuse. And I
know theres no source code yet, but developers are making progress with the SDK just to give users a taste of ICS at least. I just want to see the same progress for the Desire HD users. Wheres our ICS?
Hi
Developers here tend to wait for the official release before doing anything like that. It saves a ton of hassle because theres less that will go wrong and less complaints and things.

While I agree with the point. CM mod is not really all that close to stock anymore. It has its own framework and built in mods. Nothing wring with it as I use a CM bases rom from time to time.
But I do agree with the fact they are wanting to wait for the source. The sdk is not enough to build anything worth releasing right now. Mainly with huge population of new to Modding people on XDA now. A couple of years ago I would have been all over the sdk as well and tossed something out there knowing that the people using it would be able to help with the loads of issues that it Will have for sure. Can't do that now. To many people blindly flashing with know real idea of what is going on and don't know how to give proper feedback and bug reports. Now I know this is just due to people being new and we were all new at once but now there are more people coming from an iPhone or this is there first smartphone and can't really release what we used to.
Considering that the Galaxy Nexus hasn't even been released yet, saying that DHD users have been left behind is totally ridiculous.

Remember assumptions are the mother of all F**K Ups
They have been trying. They have it booting but the touchscreen does not work so nothing can be done.
To be fair, its all different hardware niggles, the end of the day..you could have a dev release a rom...that has a hundred bugs and is generally ****. Gingerbread came out, which was good you could test it but really pissed you off in a way that there was no way to use it daily unless you fancied losing wifi or no bluetooth.
Patience is the key.Why are there so many threads about this **** lol its every time, i do also want to post numerous threads regarding this but patience. How has the hd been left behind anyway, we have had every release so far besides ice cream
i'm almost sure DHD won't get ICS... technicaly DHD could get an 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 official OTA anytime but HTC waits until ICS will hit Sensations. Just about one month before that, DHD will get 2.3.5 as final official update...
It was the same with Hero last year... when htc rolled 2.1 on HERO just before the 2.2 launch on the newer devices. It's all marketing and I'm sure the carriers are the key players... especially the ones in US. They are making the rules and the 2 years product rollout cycle.
I'm also pretty sure that HTC "supports" the "rooting and custom roms development"... as some kind of justice for the HTC hard core consumers...
One way or another ICS will come to the dhd... If its not official it will be a port or cyanogen.
But atm i'm really happy with the 2.3.5 runny rom^^ Lets just be a little patient!

What that means? no ICS TO DHD? ?
did not understadn fully that thing there please explain?
All I want, and so many other people, is a taste of ICS, Just a test drive, I'm not asking for daily use, and the expression "left out" is referring to the SDK roms coming out, not the official source code or official release of ICS.
Just want to see some progress to a flashable ICS port, and now I am seeing that over at the development forum so this is good.
This may a ridiculous question (sorry in advance) but would any port of ICS still have the SRS settings for the music player?

I'm betting that AOSP ROMs should be able to be ported with just an ICS kernel, much of 4.1 is UI improvements rather than deep changes like 4.0.

4.0 and 4.1 is totally different from 2.3 to 4.0 so you're completely wrong here.
The answer is. It is possible but someone needs to do it and most developers have moved on.

We will see. The notification bar alone will require massive work. Not to mention the changes they added to the kernel to support the tegra closed source drivers. So we will see what happens when the nexus gets the update.
Not to mention few will use the sdk to make a rom

btw porting from nexus is not gonna happen. jb is quite a ways off from dhd if at all. starting to push the limits of this old phone. and personally id rather have a perfect working ics coming soon than start up with another flakey and nothing really working alpha again.

we will have an official fully working ICS in a few weeks, and I think the AOSP ICS roms are good enough for daily use, so its just the right time to start working on JB!
It says here ........http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s3-jelly-bean-update-details-samsung-ram-98158/ ......that JB will be rolled out to 3 year old devices, some by July, and one of these is the Nexus S. So if the Nexus S will be capable of running JB we might even be lucky enough to see an official release for our DHD's by the end of the year maybe!!?? Atleast should get a decent port!! Looks more promising to see some Jelly Bean goodness than I first thought anyway!!

remember. ICS was released mid october, and we still dont have official yet :/
True, but ICS was a major change to Gingerbread whereas JB is supposed to be an incremental upgrade, so maybe if we do get it officially it will be a bit quicker getting to us than ICS!!?? Can always hope
LC said he is waiting for source, and then he will build a rom.
he also said JB is a small update to the source, so it wont be a problem to build a working rom. (or at least this is how I read it XD)
Our DHDs are due an official ICS rom in the coming weeks. Once this happens, surely it won't take long to get the camera fully working in ICS and JB update should merely be incremental. I'm not a dev though, so could be wrong.
I did the jellybean sdk port for iconia a500 and I happen to have a desire hd in my pocket maybe I'll mess with it
