Math Teacher seeking Tablet!

Hi Everyone,
I am looking for tablet advice. I am a high school math teacher who teaches using SMARTboards. If you've never heard of this, it's basically a giant white board that is also a touchscreen (picture a 6 foot tablet mounted to the wall). It mirrors the PC in my classroom (via a projector mounted on the ceiling), and allows lots of fun interactive opportunities with my students. However, I am stuck at the front of the room with my back to my kids a lot. I want to change all that, so I want to buy a tablet to control the PC (which in turn controls the SMARTboard).
What I am seeking requires a tablet that could take over a Windows XP PC (wirelessly I assume - we do have WiFi access). Any suggestion on good apps for remote access would be appreciated here, but also I want to know this - would this system seem to be a good one with the Nexus 7?
Do you guys think the screen is large enough for this sort of application (solving math problems with a stylus, and this would be projected onto a large screen for my kids to see)? Or would you think a 10" screen would be better?
Also, would this idea work, technologically? WiFi access of PC... this should allow writing on the tablet to write on the PC... SMARTboard would then show what I'm writing since it is a clone of the PC screen... I just need to make sure that I can easily control programs remotely from the tablet.
I know this may sound like a mess, but I really want to do my homework before spending money I don't otherwise NEED to spend. My smartphone (EVO 4G LTE) does all I need right now, but this would be a toy that I can also use daily for work. Thanks for any input you guys have! Feel free to ask questions if what I said didn't make perfect sense. I just know that XDA is the place to go for tech questions, and this is an awesome community.

Splashtop 2 is really good, works great with my computer.
A 7in screen should be fine if the app in question can zoom, or you dont mind less space.
I notice that with my remote desktop it doesnt matter if im zoomed in unless i try to name a file, or if im using photoshop to paint.

I would imagine the smartboard uses its own software, could you list the boards make/model? We might be able to help out a bit more. Otherwise you'll just be connecting your tablet to your computer via remote desktop and then using it to control your smartboard. I would imagine you would definitly lose some functionality that way and it would be hard to control with the small screen.
I would suggest either getting a netbook or small laptop and just face the class using it or get a stool to set it on, or to go to the google play store online and see if your smartboard has an app.

I have done this actually
I love my nexus but i do NOT think its big enough..
when my arm was in a sling from surgery for over 5 months.. I would use SPLASH TOP .
My tablet was a 10 inch Acer a500 tablet connected thru my netgear wifi router in close proximity . to my Wired connection on the same router. With HDMI MIRROR to 42 INCH HD TV.. i used handwriting and photo shop on the tv screen . i think the 10 inch tablet was ok but the hand writing is hard because of the size of the screen on the tablet Drawing something say the 3 inches tall 1 letter on the tablet will show up as 4 feet tall on that display ..
Your software could have some zoom features in it to correct this. Other wise it would be difficult to make it work... its hard for my to explain the issue .
very doable if your program on the computer can overcome the zoom issue.. i THINK This is what the post above mine was saying..

+1 for Splashtop, but I would imagine there is some sort of Smartboard app specifically for Android devices. If there is such an app, that would probably be your best bet, but I don't know.
Splashtop on the other hand was the smoothest remote control software I've used. It's free as well (as long as your using it on a local network).

if there is a app for the smart board then a 7 in tablet will likely work .. the issue is the resolution and more so pixel density .. If the app will let you project say 1-4 ratio or what ever you need to make it work and resize then you could have a winner...
we use something similar to that smart board at work for blue prints..
ohh and +1 more for splash top Its best and i have tried them all.. the issue could lie in the speed and network ability of the xp pc

Unfortunately there is no SmartBoard app yet. Apple is getting one this fall, and Android MAY in the future. As for now, u can't bank on that.
I'm thinking the Samsung Tab 2 10.1 would be a good choice. Or maybe I should look into Windows Tablets... Hmm.

I cosign those who said Splashtop and for a tablet, I would recommend a Transformer over the Galaxy Tab.

If you can wait till october- November I suggest you look into windows 8 tablet/PC which could do all of your computer functions with pen input and run all your computer applications.

I have a friend who is also an elementary school teacher and I recommended this device to her as she is also using the smartboard. I haven't used it myself but I think the size of screen is good for it unless you also already have a 10 inch tablet. But to each is own I know I write extremely small and she is more of a bubbly letter kind of gal so I can fit write more you could say.

I checked out tablets at Fry's Electronics today... 7" is definitely too small for this application.
Does anyone else have issues with accuracy of the styli out there today? I tried a few tablets and a few styli... I couldn't write an equation to save my life! It kept not reading it or appearing slightly above or below where I wanted. Then I tried the S pen on the Sammy Note 10.1... It was incredible! It was like writing on paper with a pencil! I don't wanna spend that much, but man that thing was incredible... I think that's what I may need.
Thanks for all of the help guys! Any other tips are still appreciated but I'm pretty sure I won't be a Nexus 7 owner...

One thing that a teacher had was a Mobi mobile interactive whiteboard. It is a thing that hooks up to your computer and is exactly what you are looking for. Also they have clickers with a program that yo ask questions and they key in the answer and you can see who is right/Wong and what answer they had. Hope I helped!

Comparisons to Wacom tablet

Hi there I'm thinking of getting a galaxy note 10.1 to maybe enhance my digital art, can't afford to buy a critiq as it's way more than I can afford and when I saw this tablet I just knew I wanted one.
I'm used to using a Wacom tablet but it has to be connected to my laptop and a tablet seems like a great way to do paintings outside without the hassle of bringing an extra laptop.
How would you compare it to a Wacom and is it as easy to use and is the pressure sensitive pen as good as the pens that come with Wacom tablets.
I've seen reviews about the galaxy 10.1 but they were by phone and tablet reviewers that didn't really do any art and just talked about the specifications and benchmarks and the hardware.
I was either thinking of getting this tablet and having to save more to buy it or buy a cheaper tablet and get a dagi stylus.
What are your views?

The wacom pens work on the note 10.1 and it has a wacom digitiser. I have had no problems and find the pen quite good with different levels of pressure sensitivity, but I'm no artist...
There have been mixed reviews and threads about problems with the s-pen but I can't say I have had any. The best bet would be to go to a store and try it out... Just remember that the store demo's are used and abused by the public so allow for that...

It is the general forum and you can ask talk about anything you want but that doesn't mean people will answer... As I said, I'm no artist, I have a 2 year old nephew that can draw stick figures better than me :silly:, but people don't always have the time or inclination to answer all the time....

Theres a fair amount of drawings in there, progresively gets better some very good artists showcasing their drawings......you might get a better idea just perusing that thread

I did the same thing, transitioned from a wacom tablet/desktop set up to the note 10.1 it's really amazing and has got me drawing all the time again!!!! It's easy to sketch even in broad daylight and the battery lasts about 10 hours. This also was a compromise for the cintiq...which I also can't afford, I'm glad I did it.

Wow cool I like your work, very original.
Hopefully when I get the 10.1 it will inspire me and motivate me to do more and maybe one day make some money from it as there are sites where people buy original digital art.
It will also give me the freedom to take it anywhere and just sketch if I want to and maybe post a few of my paintings there

I have an Intuos 3 on my PC at home. I haven't used it extensively (my dad passed it on to me), but I have used it here and there.
Having just gotten my Note 10.1, I can say it's basically the exact same feel and functionality. The difference being that (like the Cintiq) you're drawing right on the screen - which I find much easier.

Cool can't wait to get mine as I've been wanting a good tablet, I've only got the Wacom cth-460 bamboo pen and touch.

I've been waffling over getting a tablet for a while now. But when I read about the functionality of the Note 10.1 I was sold. Part of the reason I don't use my Intuos very often is because I have a hard time with the disconnect between looking at the screen on my desk while drawing on the tablet on my lap (or keyboard tray). Even with the cursor displaying where my stylus is, I find it hard to draw.
Interestingly I've never had issues with using a mouse, nor keyboard, and I'm an avid PC gamer. Just something about drawing with a stylus that doesn't work for me on a typical PC setup.
On the Note 10.1, it's like drawing on paper (as far as the brain-to-hand connection goes).

Same here, you have to have pretty good hand to eye coordinating to even produce anything on a wacom tablet and it takes some getting used to.
I like the idea of the 10.1 as it's like painting without the hassle of buying paints and canvas plus the resson I love digital art the most is I'm colour blind and found tablets easier to paint with.

Strange, my drawing and painting studio core made us learn to divorce the hand from the eye... "If you're not looking at your model, then you're making it up." was what I always learned... I figured that's why wacom went ahead with screen-less tablets, they figured artists could handle it. =D

LOL. Makes sense. I just never took an art class (beyond grade 10). Kind of funny now that I think about it, having worked as a graphic designer for 9 years.

I think the main compromise going between my Intuos and Note 10.1 is not hardware related, but software. There isn't any software that I know of in Android that can easily handle a large PSD file along with my various adjustment layers. But, for those projects, I shrink or flatten a copy before I work on it on the tablet. Aside from that, the only thing it seems to be missing is tilt sensitivity, which I'm not quite good enough to perceive anyway.

samsung released the sdk and api for the multiwindow is possible to port to nexus 7

Galaxy s2 is baht the same family as the note. It had the required framework etc so its much easier.
But that does not mean it's impossible.

Its a great feature for a 10 inch tablet but for 7 inch its not something that you will be able to really use . text would be much to small to read.
I HAD it on the galaxy note 10.1 while i had it.. I do miss the drawing and handwriting the note can do thou.. might buy another one..

Ubuntu phone for HP touchpad

Will the go HP touchpad be capable of running Ubuntu and will it get a port?

The HP Touchpad already has a native port of Ubuntu 11.10, 12.04, 12.10 and 13.04 (the latest being the most stable). I don't think Ubuntu for Phones will come to the Touchpad anytime soon because it's aimed at smartphones so not really at tablets with a 9.7 inch screen. Who knows what it'll look like (images of Android 2.3 on tablets pop up in my mind now lol). But if you mean spec-wise, than it's more than capable since it meets the minimum requirements by far.

looking forward to this, a full featured ubuntu phone would be much more useful then the current desktop version ports which are nearly unusible.

The tablet version of Ubuntu Phone may get ported over but it requires at least 2 GB RAM (Nexus 7 and 10 excluded) and the HP Touchpad isn't really new hardware anymore so I'm not sure how fast it will run. Even the native port of 13.04 runs sluggish (albeit usable). The only thing running smooth and fast is the default webOS (which I still enjoy every day even though I'm an Ubuntu desktop user) but that's made for it so... But maybe someone can optimize it, it will be open source after all so it may run on the Touchpad albeit a bit laggy but useable. But we need the devs for that that currently maintain the 12.10 and 13.04 ports.

I think android Is running smooth in my opinion better than web os I'm using schizoid jellybean. I don't think Ubuntu will run all that smoothly but I'm sure there will be a port of some kind. A triple boot of web is android and Ubuntu would be nice

Do you use Note 10.1 specific features (spen,multi window,etc)? How?

I have my Note 10.1 for around 6 months now, i use it daily and i'm happy with it regarding smoothness and performance but i can't find use for it's specific features. I use it like i would any other android tablet.
Some of the specific features i'm talking about which i don't use:
Spen: it looks interesting as concept but it doesn't feel pratical to use. it's much more intuitive to use your finger instead of going for the pen.
The pen feels like an unnecessary extension of your finger.
I tried drawing but it was a disappointing experience, it doesn't track fast enough like you would on normal paper, it's much too slow, i have to draw in slow motion or it won't keep up.
Maybe it is useful for some handwritten notes but due to the drawing lag and the fact that the keyboard prediction is quite good i end up preferring to just use the keyboard.
multiwindow (or apps in hovering windows): it looks powerful and interesting but i've yet to find a use for it. I use several windows in a PC usually but it doesn't feel pratical to do it in a tablet, the screen size/resolution isn't big enough, you get 2 small windows and end up not enjoying properly either app.
Please help me make better use of my note, i'm happy with it but i feel i'm waisting some potential uses.

I use the spen every day to take notes in meetings or at my desk. the snote application is for me unusable but with the right app (in my case Lecturenotes) it replaced completely my paper notebook in the job. Together with syncing the notes to Evernote or own server or sending handwritten notes with drawings per mail directly to collegues it fit's all my needs.
As mentioned, I don't see any lagging using the pen. and true, using the pen only to control the device does not make sense at all.

I bought the Note 10.1 primarily for notes, reading, work and browsing and I'm happy all round
I use the S Pen all the time and was one of the reasons I bought a Note and not a Nexus for example. Is your S Pen calibrated well? Mine has no problems with lag and can keep up with my writing with no problems at all. Maybe use a different tip?
I also use multiwindow which is nice for taking notes and browsing at the same time for example. Or watching a movie while working (if there's no boss around lol).

I got because I needed a 10" tablet for my whip and the note 10.1 had multi window.. I use this tablet as my main device.. I use cm10.2 because it seems a bit faster than stock and I came to the conclusion that multi window is pointless.. it doesn't work like it does on a PC were I can drag and drop

I only use the multi-window occasionally. However, the stylus? I used to use that every day when I still had classes, but now that I'm doing all research and teaching, I only use it for quick and dirty calculations. I used to draw with it as well, but I don't have that time now.. :/
(What app are you using? I find that certain apps don't seem optimized for the spen, so the tracker does lag for those.)

tried lecture notes yesterday, looks clean and simple but i still feel the tracking lags a bit if you move the pen faster. if i write as i would on a normal paper it can't keep up completely. I tried the character recognition "keyboard" and it also fails to recognize most of my handwriting, might be a bit my fault too.
Anyway, still happy with my note, but i guess having spen or multiwindow won't be a requirement when i upgrade my tablet.
Otoh it seems that if choose to stick with samsung the new note 10.1 seems the only way to go because the galaxy tab3 has last year's screen resolution.

From your needs I would think that nexus 10 would be more than sufficient. Samsung too.

I agree. If you're not going to use the S-Pen, then why not get a Nexus 10 or even a Samsung Tab2/3? The only reason we put up with the dated resolution of the screen is the S-Pen, since there's no alternative (at least running Android).

Pretty much done away with notebooks here. I'm still torn between lecture notes and s note. I like certain features of each. I do find handwriting recognition more bother than worth. S pen IS the big advantage of the note. Definitely worth it to me.
Bottom line is my. Note is everywhere I am.

I also use SPen everyday. I bought this tablet for taking notes during meetings. I'm fully happywith it.
I use the multiwindow feature when I need several functions at the same time. For instance, I can open SNote with a calculator or internet navigator. But honestly, it's not my favourite feature.
I plan to move to another ROM since Samsung is not prompt to send us a new one. I would like to setup accounts. However, I would like to keep SNote ...

I would have considered the Nexus 10 if it was sold in my country (which is not), but, even so, i read that the Nexus 10 might not be as fast/smooth as the Note due to the higher resolution.

I recommend to everyone whose usage of the device matches the above, flash an AOSP based rom!

What do you mean exactly with hovering? Of course the software is _able_ to detect the spen hovering, because this is a hardware feature of the digitizer. For example: In lecture notes you can use hovering to scroll the page, that's because the developer chose to get the signals of the hardware (spen and digitzer). Samsung chose to integrate the hovering feature in the system api, so that you can scroll in menu's etc. Most of the AOSP rom's (i am using cyanogenmod, look at my signature) will not include the hovering in their system, but nevertheless it's a hardware feature that is enabled, but the software needs to use it. I hope you can understand this.
To palm rejection: It's nearly the same, with the little difference that the touchscreen always shuts down if the spen is near it. I don't know if it's even possible to write software that brakes this feature.
But I can assure you: On cyanogenmod the writing with spen is much more fluid, smoother and feels much better than on a tw based rom.

thanks. that's what i wanted to know. I'm assuming pressure sensitivity works too then with apps that support it (i believe ezpdf does support this, at least it did when i tried in the store on the stock model)?

Yes, it is. Works flawlessy in lecture notes on cyanogenmod.

Sounds good. But which tool are you using for taking notes? I guess you don't use anymore SNote, right?

That's not possible, there is no S Note on AOSP roms, it needs Toichwiz API /framework. I am using lecture notes, but many people also use papyrus. Your call.
