How To Change Bootanimations And Boot Sounds ! - Optimus One, P500, V Themes and Apps

HOW TO CHANGE BOOTANIMATIONS AND BOOTSOUNDS !!
*The size 7 looks funky eh? *
Ok, so this thread is a tutorial on how to change the bootanimations and bootsounds on our beloved LG - Optimus One/P500..(You had already guessed that, had'nt you? ) .. Basically I will start from scratch so this thread can be easily understood and appreciated () by everyone including newbies to Android ('n00bs' is racist, isn't it ?) ..So here goes...
PRIMARY REQUIREMENTS
1) First and foremost 'BRAINS' .. Please read and re-read the thread carefully before asking any stupid questions.
2) A Rooted Phone. Use any one click application such as z4root or gingerbreak to root your phone. There are many tutorials on the net for that matter.
3) A file manager (Installed on your phone) with the ability to R/W (Read/Write) .. Such as Root Explorer (Highly Reccomended) ,File Expert..etc..
4) ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE TRYING ANY OF THESE METHODS.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOOTANIMATIONS
1) Download any bootanimations online (or create one using the link below) and make sure they are of '.zip' format. Please see the links below this section.
2) DO NOT extract the file. Simply rename the file to 'bootanimation.zip' (without the quotes).
eg: if your file name is xxxxx.zip ,change it to bootanimation.zip
3) Connect your Phone to the computer ,turn on usb mass storage and copy paste the file onto your sdcard. You can place it anywhere, but just remember to keep track of it. Turn of usb mass storage and disconnect.
4) Go to Root Explorer and move your file to data/local (put it in the 'local' folder) or system/media. The location of the bootanimation varies with ROMs . Wherever you see the old bootanimation.zip file, put it in that folder. If a file with the same name already exists, replace it with the new file and move the old file onto your sdcard. (Thats your old bootanimation)
5) Reboot
STFU and enjoy your new bootanimation !
NOTES :
If the file you downloaded from the net is already named 'bootanimation.zip' you do not need to re - rename it. (That was obvious, wasn't it ?).
Also you could also rename the file using root explorer and not neccesarily using the PC. Its really upto you.
If you want to download some bootanimations go HERE
P.S. My personal favourite is Transformer Bootanimation by aspee.
You can create your own bootanimations using this tool.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOOTSOUNDS
1) Ok, for this process you need a sound file, preferably a '.wav' file, but any will do ... You could download them from the net (Google ) or you could just choose any file from your PC, its really up to you.
2) Now you need to convert the sound file to a '.mp3' format..A fast and easy way to do this is by going out here and following the instructions on screen. You could also use any other audio converters but everyone has their own preference.
3) Change the name of the converted file to 'PowerOn.mp3' ('P' and 'O' capitalized)
eg: change the name from xxxxxxx.mp3 to PowerOn.mp3
4) Connect your Phone to the computer ,turn on usb mass storage and copy paste the file onto your sdcard. You can place it anywhere, but just remember to keep track of it. Turn of usb mass storage and disconnect.
5) Go to Root Explorer and move your file to system/sounds/lgeSounds (put it in the 'lgeSounds' folder). If a file with the same name already exists, replace it with the new file and move the old file onto your sdcard. (Thats your old bootsound)
6) Reboot
Your smiling, ain't you ? Enjoy the new bootsound.
FOR CYANOGENMOD USERS
1. Download this shell script here bootsnd.sh
2. Place it on the root of your SD card & then open Terminal & type the following
su
cd /sdcard
sh bootsnd.sh
3. Now by using a file manager program with R/W (Read/Write) go to the /system/bin in your phone & make sure the file has transfered over! It should say BOOTSOUND & have permissions set to rwxrwxrwx! for this I use Root Explorer or you can use File Manager once you have selected R/W
4. Before transferring your sound file over rename it on your pc, android_audio and make sure it is a .mp3 file. Transfer the sound file from your pc to the root of your SDcard. Now move your sound file you want to play when the phone boots to /system/media of your phone & rename it android_audio you will have to be in R/W mode! Typically fifteen seconds is plenty long and just perfect, however anything over 30 seconds will get cut off.
5. Reboot & enjoy your new BOOTSOUND B)

NOTES :
1) Yes. These animations do work on custom roms. You do not need to do anything else as stated elsewhere by other articles.
2) Always make a backup before doing new things.
3) If you still have a problem then you see that reply box below..Well yeah, fire away !
4) Utilize the THANKS button. That was made for a reason

Umm well..if you do have the 'lge sounds' folder then it will definitely work.
And yeah you dont neccesarily need to use your PC everytime..As long as your sound file is 'PowerOn.mp3' You're good to go !
Sometimes, instead of converting the file to mp3 format you could just rename your file to 'PowerOn.mp3' but I personally have experienced that only renaming the file doesn't work always i.e it works sometimes and sometimes doesnt..But converting AND renaming it is a sureshot method
Please tell me whether it works for your optimus V..

The method works for sure..I tried it on Mik'o Void which IS a CM ROM..
Make sure u convert the file to an mp3 format and also rename it to android_audio.mp3. Before using the terminal emulator to use the script, go to root explorer and click on mount r/w and you are good to go.

To start go to
/system/etc/unit.local.rc
and open it in the text editor. Delete everything from
###Bootsound - Safe to Delete: Start###
to
###Bootsound - Safe to Delete: Stop###
Delete any instances of it.
Next go to /system/bin/ and delete the file bootsound.
Now go to /system/build.prop and open it in the text editor. Scroll all the way to the bottom and delete any instance of
ro.config.play.bootsound=1.
Now delete build.pro this is an error in the bootsound script. If you don't have this file don't worry about it.
Now open the bootsnd.sh file you downloaded and scroll to the bottom. Find the line that reads
echo ' ' >> /system/build.pro
and add a p at the end so it reads
echo ' ' >> /system/build.prop
and then save and exit.
Now open terminal emulator and type in:
su
cd /sdcard
sh bootsnd.sh
Now go to /system/bin/ and verify that the file bootsound was created and make sure it has full permissions.
If all is well place android_audio.mp3 in /system/media/ if it isn't there already. Reboot and enjoy your bootsound!

Gotta say, this worked like a charm! Now I have to decide which one I like best. The Transformers one would be awesome if it had a corresponding sound file simliar to the movie sound of heavy metal joining into its shape!

Well, the bootanimation is actually a series of PNG images which are displayed in quick succession. The fps actually depends majorly on the number of images.
If u wanna create ur own BAnim there are many threads on XDA for that matter.

[Audio] [4/6/10] Audio Repository

This is a collection of audio files from several ROMs from several phones, including:
CDMA Hero - 1.5
CDMA Hero - AOSP 2.1
CDMA Hero - Sense 2.1
Motorola Stock
Samsung Stock
There are almost 200 different sounds in this collection! Tons of variety!
Also note that this frees up some space in your /system partition! Always a good thing!
Copy the .zip posted and flash it just like any other update.zip. This will delete your current system/media/audio folders (with the exception of ui) and place the repository on your sdcard. BE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH SPACE ON YOUR SDCARD BEFORE FLASHING THIS!
Updates:
Included additional sounds from here
Created an update.zip to automagically delete current system files

There is no need to put the files in /system/
You can make a /media folder on the SD card and it works the same... *AND* the files won't get hosed with every ROM reflash.

I tried that first but then all the files show up in your Music player. I also tried putting a .nomedia file in the folder but then they didn't show up at all.
This is the only way I've found that works completely.
Dont put it in your system folder. Create a /media/audio/notifications or /media/audio/ringtones folder on your sdcard. My ringtones and notifications are seen in these folders.
Gregalous said:
I have created a collection of notifications, ringtones, alarms, and general UI sounds from every ROM that I have ever used (1.5, 1.6 and 2.1 w/ & w/o Sense) all into one folder. This gives you a huge amount of choices for ringtones, notification sounds, etc.
The .zip posted contains a folder called media. To use the sounds, unzip the attached file to your tools folder and from ADB:
Code:
adb remount
adb push media /system/media/
Give it just a second (as there are quite a few of them) and when it's done copying it will tell you. Reboot once finished.
I did not do an update.zip because quite honestly it's much faster and easier to do it through ADB.
Enjoy

Again, the reason I put those instructions up is because when I had tried putting it on my sdcard, the files would show up in the music player.
Besides, you can use the files however you want, I'm not forcing anyone to put them into /system, that was just my recommendation.

You went to phone ringtone/notification ringtone and there wasn't anything there? If done correctly there should be a very long list to choose from.
Did you reboot after pushing?
Ok so after further testing, it turns out that the only files that show up in the music player are the UI sounds. So I just deleted those (since they're all the same in all the ROMs I'm pretty sure, plus no one really cares about those) and now it works just perfectly when you put in your sdcard.
I humbly admit that I was wrong This should work better now, especially for those that were worried about using up /system space.
First post edited with new directions and .zip.
awesome! Thanks so much for making this! After RMing the media files from the system I gained like 20mb's that can be utilized in running apps and such. You're the man!
I tried installing this by putting them on the sdcard, and all of the sounds show up on the list, but everyone option I chose plays the same song on my sdcard :|
Ideas?
did you RM the system files? Mine works fine.

Ya I did, and then I my phone would freeze when anything tried to notify me, and it woudn't mount my sd card :| Good thing i have a sdcard slot in my computer, i had to remove the files and rewrite them to my sdcard. Then it started working. No idea why, but its working
I merged your folder with the original media folder and rebooted but they do not show up...??
in case anyone is having trouble with this, there is a very clear post on how to do this here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5936137&postcount=3236
Updated, nearly 200 sounds in this package now
Now in update.zip format, super easy!

Thanks for posting this.

[GUIDE] Changing your bootanimation and delete those ugly sound

*EDITED*
This is very easy now after having the permanent ROOT -- thanks to PAUL for wonderful Visionary+, Evostance for brilliant guide, and those geniuses who make this happened (you know who )
First you need to get permanent root. Here is the link to the guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834427
(If you read till page 10, you will definitely know how to do it and what to expect).
Second, go buy ROOT EXPLORER from the market. (Best explorer for rooted phone period).
Go to /system/customize/resource
Make sure you enable the r/w (read write option), other wise you cant do modification.
You will see both the audio and bootanimation there.
If you hated that sound (just like me), just delete the audio.mp3. If you want to change the bootanimation, just copy your bootnimation.zip to overwrite the default one.
That's all....reboot the phone....and you will have your peace...and enjoy the new bootanimation.
kuailan said:
I am just wondering is the good old way of adb pushing the bootanimation.zip work for HD? I do noticed the stock animation are located in /customize/resource folder in the system ROM. Has anyone try changing the bootanimation? Just hated those sound in bootup (prefer no sound).

firstly i'd like to state, this is development and not Q & A not being mean just stating.
secondly if you had read the ref guide which is pinned to the top you might have got your answer.
finally your answer...
NO
you can not write on the nand with the temp root. no can you adb push.
permanent root is on its way and i believe the nand will be unlocked on that so you may have write permissions. once this has been obtained then you can push a custom boot animation if required.

First of all thank you for the answer (actually I also thought so, and your answer just confirmed that)
And as for posting in develeopment, I DO believe that changing bootanimation is part of Android development (anything that involved creating/modifying and changing of the default system files). Just like recovery or flashing tools, people also develop bootanimation changer application to make life easier for others.
Also I did some search, and this is the first post for any bootanimation for Desire HD. I hope once "root" has been accomplished. People can just use this thread to put the guide to changing those animation.
Therefore I do read and follow the guidelines.

well glad you're a happy bunny
but several things,it isn't development as you were asking a question at time of writing.
secondly themes section deals with bootanimation and things like that. sound can be disabled by just renaming the file i.e. add a .bak after mp3 just for back up purpose or you can delete the file entirely up to the user.
with customs roms, they may be in a different location. i do believe that AOSP builds are located in media where as in sense builds /customize/resource
it can change depending on the developers choice really. thats why when a person releases a theme, it states what rom the user must be using to avoid problems.
anyways there's no need to carry on with that as you have got what you wanted, full root so you can do w.e. you like know
my personal favourite boot animation was the original hero one, but since that doesnt work anymore/havent found 1 that has been converted to work with the new roms, i like "making fro-yo" it just draws a pic of a frozen yoghert and colours it in.
I purchased Bootanimation changer by Andres Schomis a while back when I was still using the original Desire. There are quite a few nice and interesting ones there. My fav so far is the pissing droid (to piss off some of my iphone mate ) and the alienware. I am sure they are also available in this forum (just do a search). There is no option for desire HD yet, but seem like the one that work for Desire also work just fine in HD. To make the app work, you will need to set the custom path. I highly recommend that app for bootanimation.
Somehow I feel this thread should be in the Themes/Apps subforum instead Since it basically has to do with customization. Anyway, thanks a lot for the instructions.

I cant figure out whats wrong with it....

can someone help me please?
Bump any one can help?
Just delete the bootanimation.zip inside the /system/customize/resource
Then just copy your animation to the same path /system/customize/resource.
Make sure your animation is also named bootanimation.zip
For some reason I'm not able to enable the r/w function in the resource folder. The only place I can do it is in the root directory (with system, sdcard etc). Any idea of why this is happening? (my phone is perma-rooted and I have granted Super user permissions).

PS : my file may be too big 27 megabite for the bootanimation.zip
I tried already, but why whenever I reboot, the bootanimation.zip would revert to the original one?

Are you rooted? If not, you cannot do it, because you need root access to do changes in /system directory. If, you can do it with e.g. one of the following apps:
Root explorer (paid)
Super Manager (free)
File Expert (free)
After starting, you need to mount (switch) r/w. Additionally, in both free apps, you need to enable root option in their settings before. Now can you can overwrite.
Yessss !! it works (yes, I'm rooted)
Thank you, MatDrOiD ! I used File Expert. Just 2 questions:
in file expert, when i go into options - mount - and choose "read and write" should I be already positioned browsing the "system" folder ??
I've done this way, but I suspect that "mount read and write" is a global option referring to system folders and can be enabled just when entering File expert ?

I don't like to say it, but pressing thanks-button would be awesome!
You can also mount r/w while in root folder, does not matter. After closing file expert, you always have to enable root explorer function and mounting r/w again, when you start file expert the next time. At least i cannot find an option to enable it permantly. Which is understandable for me, because superuser rights can damage your phone (so this enable action works metaphorically as a little warning, imho).

Root explorer, change permissions
so it worked, i changed premissions but stil when i open it it either says NULL (in hexedit) or "opened in Read only mode) in the text reader
ive no idea what to do
i cant even explort the file to my pc.. i moved it to DOWNLOAD folder and when i open the folder in the PC the file is like invisivle (and yes invis files and folders are set to show)
which files are you trying to bring over? i would sugget you start with a decent explorer first. solid explorer for instance.

Custom boot animation jarvis

Hey anyone know of an awesome looking jarvis boot animation, ive got my phne set up like jarvis and this is the last step im issing the one i saw for the s4 wasnt as nice as i hoped. there is a nice one for S3 but does anyoine know of one i missed anuwhere
Why don't you try and make one yourself. They're not that hard, especially if you can find the animation you like. Just download a bootanimation.zip, extract it and see what's inside. It'll be pretty self explanatory what you need to do. If you have questions I can help you.
Edit, if you have a link to the s3 one you like let me know. I'll download and let you know what you need to get it to work on the s4.

Ok, are you rooted? Download the zip file and also download winrar if you don't already have it.

Did you download the zip to your pc? if so, use winrar to extract the zip, use extract to bootanimation...
It's a very easy modification to make it work on the s4

ok so i have it extracted to a folder called bootanimation
Double click on the part00, part01, and part02 just to see what's inside them. The only file you need to change is the desc file, double click on that too. the 720, 1280 is the display resolution of the s3, the s4 is 1080, 1920

Instructions for manual installation :
(Take a backup , just in case , not needed actually, ive tested all files) (Make sure you have enabled custom bootanimations , IF not go here - Enable Custom Bootanimations Hit thanks to the dev there)
1.Download manual installation files, rename file to bootanimation.zip
2.Copy files to phone.
3.Backup your current bootanimation from system/media folder and your Poweron.ogg file from system/audio/ui using Root Explorer or other root file managers ,
4.Copy the bootanimation.zip to /system/media folder and Poweron.ogg file to system/audio/ui folder , Mount R/W (make it writable) , overwrite the files, set permissions to rw-r--r-- and reboot and Enjoy !
5.Dont forget to hit the thanks button !

Do you have a file manger like root explorer ot anything? You'll need to change the permissions to rw-r-r of the zip file you put in /system/media
Just put the *.ogg file in, not sure the sound will work or not on the s4
Edit, also make sure the file you copied to /system/media is re-named bootanimation.zip

You don't extract it. Did you rename the stock boot animation? rename it to bootanimation.zip.bak before you copy your bootanmiation.zip

Well, just copy yours over and make sure the permissions are set correctly There's another bootanimation that the phone defaults to if there isn't anything in /system/media
