[DEV REQUEST CM7] Modem support for Europe (WCDMA 1900/2100) - Vibrant General

Hello there. Some of the Vibrant users are not from the USA, just like me. Here we don't have the 1700 band that T-Mobile uses, but we still use 2100 MHz for 3G.
Well, demetris_I has told me that there are much better modems for us european users from devices like the I9000. The problem is that CM7 is not able to make those modem work. At least, this is what he told me.
Flashing those modems (that are compatible with our Vibrants) makes it impossible to connect to 3G. We know that it's a software problem, so it would be fixed if a developer is kind enough to investigate the way to make CyanogenMod use the correct bands.
This is a request for any of you with dev skills to have a look into this. We are very good testers, so any change you do could be checked.
Please, have into account that we are absolutely alone in Europe, we are only a low percentage of the Vibrant users, but we really need to have a better modem that fits our networks.

You need to be specific. Based upon your post, there is no way to identify what to begin working on.
1. What modems are you trying to flash?
2. Be specific.
3. What are the results you are getting? "doesn't work" isn't an answer. Does 3g connect? No? Does 2g data work? Do you get voice calls?
4. Be specific.
5. The Vibrant comes out of the box with UMTS Band I (2100mhz) support. Do the default T-Mobile radios work on non-CM7 Roms?
6. Be specific.

Let me clear some things up.
Modems from other phones work, but only on gsm basebands.
WCDMA is not connectable until we flash any Vibrant modem.
Well this is the whole idea,
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 1700 / 1900 / 2100
Those are the bands supported by the vibrant.
So we should be able to connect to WCDMA (2100)as we are able to connect to GSM(GPRS), with other modems.
So Vibrant CM rom refuses to connect to WCDMA 2100(Europe) but gladly connects to GSM Bands (900/1800 tested) and i think is a rom specific support problem.
We need a capable developer to test and fix this issue by just looking at the Captivate/GalaxyS code git for specific changes that dont reflect on the vibrant code from the same git.
Example:
Code tells the phone to look for WCDMA to 1700 but as we flashed the phone with a different modem the initial req is not given so the phone stucks at no signal.
If you flash back a vibrant modem signal checking code executes right and proceeds to connect to next available signal that is 2100.

demetris gave a very good explanation of what it happens. The fact is that the Vibrant's hardware can connect to 3G using HSDPA 1700 / 1900 / 2100.
When the Vibrant is using a modem made for it (Vibrant with Vibrant modem) you can connect to every band it does support.
When a modem from I9000, Fascinate, Captivate,… is flashed, everything works as expected, so I think they are almost identical in functionality, but SOMETHING makes it impossible for it to connect to any of the 3G bands.
When in the dialpad you enter the code to select bands, you can see/select the bands you wish to use, but it just refuses to connect.
Why do we want this working? Because for sure, modems from the european version (I9000) might be optimized for our networks and be less battery consuming or have increased coverage. demetris tested them and noticed an improvement.
So, we are asking you to look into it so modems from the I9000 (priority) becomes usable for us.
I hope to be specific enough this time. Of course, I offer myself as a beta tester. My carrier uses WCDMA 2100 MHz for 3G (UMTS).

[Q] Telstra Australia AP settings & speed ?

Hi all,
Mostly a lurker here over the years, love the site and forums - great community! I'm running latest JG4 Optus on my SGS with the new "2200 score" lagfix - awesome!
Anyone else getting really slow data on Telstra? I have tried telstra.wap telstra.corp telstra.internet telstra.iph all of these AP's give extremely slow data, and the phone symbol at the top flicks between 'H' (assume HSDPA) and 3G at times. I'm talking 0.4mpbs.
My friend is on Optus and his *cough* iPhone is getting 4.45mbps, in comparison my speed is nowhere near this speed. I am in metro Melbourne.
Anyone else have slow Telstra experience or know a trick or setting to help out - would be much appreciated!

i could be wrong, but i dont think the galaxy s supports telstra network very well, if at all. dunno, not real tecchy, but its what ive heard round the traps. something to do with the bands the phone supports (900/2100 or 2200ish) and telstra is 850 something or other. smarter people than me will be able to clarify.
Correct, Telstra uses 850mhz and 2100 (apparently). But, only some variants support 850, and Telstra are releasing their own for that frequency. So I'd imagine that 2100 simply has lower coverage (Optus on the otherhand uses the more standard 900mhz frequency).
If you already own the phone, you may wish to consider moving to an optus based network (such as Exetel for Virgin). However, it is also entirely possible/probable that the galaxy S ships with a chip that supports 850mhz, and it simply needs to be enabled (I have seen threads which showed a way to apparently enable it).
Or, it may be just reception probs

It possibly does, but which country did you purchase it in? Remember, some countries might have had it disabled (because they don't use 850, or have other services on those frequencies).

Hi Andrew Purchased in Australia from Allphones "unlocked". Tried the 850 band turn on and various other fiddles in that debug/phone settings area relating to 3G and HSDPA - unfortunately the max I've seen on Telstra is 0.40Mbps, my friend gets 4.45Mbps on iPhone/Optus
Coverage in my area is usually great, I'm in Melb metro area and normally full bars.

mate it might be worth a look over at whirlpool forums, they seem to have a fair bit of stuff about telstra and the galaxy s over there, so you should hopefully find some help
Hi, thanks for all the information, heres the low down:
Telstra has WCDMA 2100 and 850 bands, but the Galaxy S badged versions of this phone only support quad band in GSM, it is triband on WCDMA and unfortunately 850 isn't supported Telstra will be selling a different version of this phone shortly ("Captivate" badge!?!?!?) which WILL support their 3.5G 850 network at full speed.

I am planning to buy MT4G, unlock it and use it on another carrier with compatible frequencies of course. Will I be still able to get updates using for example a wifi connection? or should I download updates manually? Is there something that I will lose when I use the phone on another carrier ?
I don't know if you mean overseas or in any place other than the U.S. but the only "compatible" carrier for this phone besides T-Mobile is AT&T. The reason why compatible is in quotes is because yes the phone would function and make calls on that network, but you will lose 3G and HSPA+ service as AT&T's equivalents operate on a different and incompatible spectrum.
I would also assume that you would not receive OTA updates either.

Overseas, on a network that is compatible with regard to GSM/ UMTS frequencies. So the only way to get updates is to download them from forums like this one?

I don't know for absolute certain, but I'm 95% sure you wouldn't recieve OTA since it goes out over the network your phone is connected to.
You can usually snag the update from here, but unfortunately, a lot of people didn't run aLogcat to log the download and get the link. Including myself, though I'm trying now with my second device.

Another question, does anyone know if this device works on UMTS band I 2100 ( 2100/1900)? I really can't make up my mind because it's not clear on T mobile website. It says UMTS 1700/2100/AWS and this looks like it's referring only to UMTS IV

The phone is compatible with almost every gsm band the specs are:
GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
HSDPA/HSUPA 900 / 1700 / 2100
In the US most carriers are using GSM 850/1900 and 3G 1700/2100 you will only get OTA from T-mobile in the US if you are using their cellphone service or you can hope and wait for the update to show up here on XDA in the forum.

Actually I am a telecom engineer so I know about the terms. You didn't get my question about the bands. Look here for example support.t-mobile.com/doc/tm24233.xml?&A2L.SERVICE=FeatureSummary
The listed Bands: 1 (2100) and 4 (AWS 1700/2100)
and that clearly shows that G2 supports 2 UMTS bands , 1 and 4
1 is 2100 paired with 1900 ( EU)
4 that is used by T mobile in the US.
So I am confused because on this page mytouch.t-mobile.com/mytouch-4g-features#/specs-and-manualsthey listed the bands like this

AWS is the data delivery method used only by Tmo in the US. So the 4G service may not work outside the US but according to the phone specs it states that it supports UMTS and GPRS/EDGE so it should support 3G UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ and gprs/edge for 2G everywhere. Ill test my HD (from England) when I get to new york in a day or so and see if I can get proper 3G speeds.
Todays smartphones are designed to be used worldwide with full service as much as possible.
AWS is just another name of UMTS band IV. This is the only UMTS band the MT4G supports, so you'll be able to use it for 3G on carriers that use this band. You can see the list of bands and operators that use them here:

Frequency bands differ for different technologies on the same phone. For example there are 2 versions of Nexus one one for ATT and one for T mobile although they work on GSM level because the support both GSM bands on T mobile and ATT but not the UMTS bands on both networks. UMTS and GSM frequencies are not necessarily the same for each network and most probably they won't be the same. In my country we licensed 3G services ( UMTS) on 2100 band or UMTS 1 . GSM on 900 and 1800 only.
Can someone provide me with the FCC id from the back of the phone ?
I tired to search for it on the web but I don't think what I found was the correct one.

I went to T-mobile store today, the guy was helpful and he printed out the official full technical specifications for the device that he pulled out and here what I got:
3G/UMTS Bands
Band I / UMTS2100 Yes
Band II / 1900 No
Band IV 1700/2100/AWS Yes
Band V/850 No
Band VII/ 900 No
The page was titled " Enablers" and listed specs for GSM and UMTS bands with their features. So I think this ends it for me, it does support both bands I and IV.

Did it work with you in 3G speed in England ?
Good luck but I've taken my nexus one all over the planet... you'll get 3g in the countries listed above plus Japan (softbank only) but I haven't gotten 3g anywhere else....

@OP: have you gotten the MT4G to work with UMTS Band I frequencies?
I got the update by only using my friend's t-mobile sim card, I think I got it via wifi since he doesn't have data plan.

Change 3G frequencies

Here's one for the 1337 experts.
I have a i5800L, it's the Latin American version of the i5800.
The only difference (rather than the 5801, which does have more differences) is that the i5800L is meant to work in Band V (W-CDMA 850), Band II (W-CDMA 1900) rather than 900 / 2100.
I recently installed JPM, and european version of the froyo 2.2 android. This is because I am fairly confident Latin American carriers are not going to give us any Froyo update, because the frankly don't really care. So I figured if I am to get froyo, it will have to be an European ROM
Lots of people ask how to change their 3G frequencies as to use an European phone in the Americas, or vice-versa, which I already know is not possible, because of the physical distinction between the antennas.
My question is, how can I change Android settings, or if you will configure it so as for it to recognize that it's working with 850/1900 rather than 900/2100.
There must be some file or something that can be edited, I don't believe they'd make Android such a modular OS and then fit something like the 3G bands way deep into the kernel.
Kudos for someone who can actually solve this.

I would say the kernel. FuguMod kernel doesn't work with some basebands so that's my assumption.

I've played with the froyo's commands and ive discovered a band selector *#2263# Band selection but the app close when i try to select wcdma 850, so i think that the app closes when the antenna specs are not supported for the band selected

well, fianly after a big argument and debate with vodafail, about my ghg, and them saying that it will support ALL bands and freq's that they are supporting, or launching. i find out that, it will infact NOT support their 850 G network. which sh8ts me to tears. i have had nothing but trouble with them about this, and the constant reception dropouts that i am having.
i have flashed: radio 12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2
and RIL_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2
but that hasnt seemed to help. so, i am wondering if there is a way to get my phone to support the aus 850mhz 3g network? is it a radio flash or anything? or is it a hardware based thing?
i looked around, but nothing is specific to my location.
i did however notice that the american version of the phone supports the 850 3g network.
so, is it possible to get it to work? or will i need another phone?

Wait, are you in Australia? As far as I know only Telstra uses the 850 MHz band. Vodafone uses the 900/2100 MHz bands.
yea. but vodafone are starting to roll out on the 850mhz for 3G. they havent fully done it yet, but my area is sposed to have it, and with all the constant drop outs that im facing, its BS. i have flashed a different radio to stock (listed in OP) and that hasnt made alot of difference. is there some way i can up the power or something?

I think you may need another handset my friend. It is a hardware issue.
Be thankful you are on not on WIND mobile in Canada! AWS and so few handset choices!

Worth trying the TELUS Rom Radio 23rd June 2011: Radio_12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03_M - Telus DHD 2.43.661.1 with matching RIL from Jkoljo thread. TELUS in Canada seems to operate on 850mhz for 3G. Hope that will solve your problem. If not... New phone I guess.

You can flash every radio out there and it won't help. It is a hardware issue and not a software issue as mentioned above. The only Desire HDs that will have the 850 UMTS band is Telus of Canada or the Inspire from ATT in the US. I am surprised that Telstra does not have a NextG version.
Hmm I'm on Three which will be merging networks with voda at the end of the year.. apparently we'll be forced to switch sigh..
Hopefully it wont cause any problems, although, Three is only on 2100 and I currently have no issues with my reception (Three also uses Telstra's 850 network, but I'm guess I only pick up 2100 with my DHD).
I guess we'll have to wait and see. You would think that being able to pick up voda's 900mhz network would improve reception...
But yeah, as Agoattamer said, Voda and Three's DHDs wont work on UMTS850.
As per both Voda's and Three's websites, specs for the DHD:
GSM: 850/ 900/ 1800/ 1900
UMTS: 900/ 2100 HSDPA/ HSUP
So it looks like you'd need a new phone to make use of the new 850mhz network.

I have a ZenFone 2 Laser (ZE500KL). Asus support said me that is a Taiwanese version.
The issue is that is not working with LTE network in my country, only with 2G and 3G. Here is used AWS1 that is the same AWS band 4 (1700/2100 MHz) 1700 for uplink and 2100 for downlink. Asus support said me that I have nothing to do since is a hardware issue because the antenna doesn't work in 1700/2100.
Is there a way to know if this handset could be enabled to work with LTE AWS Band 4?

First thing first, I'm sorry if my reply did not help you, and this is based on my limited understanding...
Simple answers would be nothing, nothing you can do if this is "hardware" limitation as asus told you.
Now the explanation, note that I'm not knowledgeable about this thing, so I don't think could give a meaningful explanation.
From what I've read, LTE, on different country use different band (1700, 2100, etc). And by that, just say *not the real reason, just play along with it*, "device built by limiting hw capabilities to certain band, to work on region A, because that device didn't meant to work/used outside region A" . This might the reason, you could see asus with WW or TW variant. They limit the device hardware to work only with certain band range.
This is hardware, not software/firmware (if you compare it to like some "unlocked provider device") . So you can't do anything about it.
This is like, using CDMA phone with GSM card, they work at different band. AFAIK it didn't work, cmiiw.
Oh, IIRC, old phone (before Android born) mostly have triband (GSM) you might won't be able to use your device outside your country. Then, newer phone, till now, use quad band to support usability around the globe. cmiiw

I don't know what it mean about LTE aws 1 / aws 4, I don't think this is just band length (1700/2100).
