[Q] Tethering with Droid X on 2.3 Gingerbread - Droid X General

Hello
I have a Droid X on 2.3 It's rooted and everything and recently I tried tethering. Every time I connect to my phone with my iPad it sends me to Verizon's page to subscribe to tethering plan. I was using Wireless Tether..but that stopped working..so now I'm using Barnacle Wifi Tether. That was working great until I updated to 2.3 I saw in the market WIFI Tethering but that wouldn't even download. Anyway for me to tether without verizon sending me to the subscribe to a tethering plan page?
Thank you

Just had this problem, scroll down a bit and you will see my name with the topic what is the best rom to tether, got a patch instead of a rom, works perfect for tethering my ipad 2

I am very curious now, because I am still on Froyo, and I just checked and my DroidX does indeed have the DataManager .apk and the database files! (by the way, the database has 50,000 records!) Does this mean that big red is also tracking tethering on Froyo??? The reason I kept refusing to switch to GB is because of that issue. Hmm..

Tried the patch above twice
Back to the drawing board I guess... I'm not really sure how to figure out this adhoc thing... With the beta app above, open garden, and barnacle I can see the SSID but it will not connect, and when I'm on my Xoom it says adhoc not supported. But the thing is, I could tether before, and I could connect with the xoom; before I installed MIUI 1.10.7 android version 2.3.5 gb
Before I flashed this rom I never heard of this adhoc... I am reading that there may be no fix for this right now, is that correct???
The link above installed okay, but when I go to open the app it installs I get a force close =/

Check your permissions on root explorer.
And example is
Use root explorer
Go too app data
Click on wifi tether
Check to make sure under owner execute is checked.
make sure if you got the wugfresh patch you select droid x under profile in settings. Common mistake.
Also with a custom rom you may want to go back to stock and try the wugfresh process again. I can assure you it works on a droid x. I've done it many times not with a custom rom though.

Verizon 3g HotSpot on fission??

ok i have the droid X and love it <33 but i installed Fission and love it more <3 but i need the 3g hotspot app because i love using it during school for the school computers >:] i need a way to install it i have the team black hat way to install it but it doesnt seem to work even when i mount the System folder i tried it without too What should i do :[?
Verizon 3g Hotspot
I copied the 3g hotspot zip from TBH after downloading and placed it onto my sandisk card root. I then bootstrapped into recovery and installed the 3g hotspot zip and rebooted. Worked for me. do not wipe anything just instal the zip.
TBH 3G Hotspot patcher has to be installed also. I copied it to the sandisk card and installed and rebooted. No need to wipe.
Wait really and you're running fission? I'm pretty sure that blurless roms such as fission and rubix cannot install the 3g hotspot app because it's missing some blur dependencies.

I keep trying to do that, like install the ZIP. It installs but it wont show in my App Tray it says its in the systems folder but thats it
Can't just use the market one?

No its not in the market. He's talking about the plain old wireless tether. A lot of people dont understand the difference between a wireless access point, and ad hoc data transfer.
Besides the guy a few posts up, I havent found anyone that can get it to work on non-blur rom.
Good luck, and report back if you to get it to go! I havent tried it yet myself.
i was on Apex

Apex is NOT a non-blur rom. It's framework is 2.3.15. Fission/Focused are from the Moto SDK. Please let us know if this works on an actual blurless ROM.
3g Hotspot.
My mistake.
i am really interested in finding a way to get verizons 3g hotspot to work on a blurless rom like fission. i had to sbf back to stock to use it as i really need the infastructure of it versus the ad-hoc you get from wireless tether.if anyone has any luck please post
3g hotspot
Same here. I could not live with ad hoc.

Fission version from TBH. you still need to patch it on ur own. Use the TBH app to get the patch. File is courtesy of DroidForums dot net that they fished from TBH anyway.
Fission signed 3G hotspot apk. Angdroid posted it on droid forums. http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...vanilla-2-1-11-13-2010-generic-android-4.html

[Q] I have my phone rooted, but I'm not able to tether my phone

I'm still on 2.1, but I rooted my phone using the one click root method. I downloaded the Wireless Tether app from the Marketplace, but I can never get the phone never sets itself up as a hotspot using that app. What am I doing wrong? No, I don't pay the $30 for the hotspot option from Sprint. Is that the problem?
To use Wireless Tether, you may need a custom kernel for it to work (not sure though)... Although, if you are still on the stock rom, I would suggest flashing MobileAP through CWM instead (LINK)
I use Wireless Tether and I'm rooted stock. Is the app giving error messages?

No, no error messages. I try to tether my iPad to my phone, but the hotspot never shows up. No data is ever transferred or uploaded.
As I don't know, does the iPad support connecting to ad hoc networks? If not, try installing MobileAP, which supports infrastructure mode (link in previous post).
Try downloading the wireless tether app from the google code page instead of the one from the market. There is a specific version for the Epic. Don't think the market one works correctly.

+1 to this, you may want to try searching "wireless tether" in the Epic forums. I recall in a few threads this was mentioned with specific version #s.

Working tethering?

Is there is a working wireless tether app that works and doesn't trigger the built in one?
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA Premium App
Sorry it took so long for someone to get back to you. I recently tried to tether after having not tethered for a couple weeks, just to find everything being redirected to Verizon's site. I try a few different tethering apps and I even re-install my ROM (liberty). Eventually, I get EasyTether. Worked great. Search it in the app store and pay for it if it works for you. It's quite fast and the most stable tethering app I've ever used. The only problem is you have to connect your phone to the computer via usb, but I was then able to create an ad hoc network for my brother to use through my laptop.
PDAnet should still be working. Look for it in the market.
I know verizon is messing w/a lot of the tethering apps. Theres a good article here CNN Tethering w/verizon
Barnacle has been working well for me. I don't have the stock tethering app any more because I'm running CM7 and not blur, so I can't make that assumption. The free version works, the only thing the donate version gives you is a nifty toggle widget. I bought because this dev did a great job.
I'm still using Wireless Tether for Root Users. I was on a GB leak for awhile, Apex I think, before I tried to tether again and could not get it to work, seemed I was at a crossroads. Netflix via GB, or tethering via Froyo. I weighed the options and decided I just needed tether more so I went back to a Fission Froyo. I was surprised to find out that the Netflix app actually worked, guess they fixed that. All and all a Froyo Rom was just better for me. Too many bugs on the various GB roms, and tether doesn't seem to work, believe it was something that was built into the leaked releases that could tell when you try to tether, that's not there on Froyo. So if you're desperate, roll it back, should work for you.
I used Barnacle today and it works perfectly.

Rooted Gingerbread wireless tether problem

I successfully rooted my wife's Droid 2 on Gingerbread and now when I run the wireless tether app, I get a notification that i'm using the hot spot feature, takes me to a website showing me the cost to adding the hot spot feature and not allowing me to tether unless I pay.
Is there a way to bypass this so that she can use her wireless tether without this nonsense?
Sent from Droid Incredible
There is 'wireless tether for root users' in the market and it is free. It allows for wifi tethering.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
That's the app i've been using. Never had a problem on froyo but now with gingerbread, it recognizes that a hotspot has been activated when I turn on the wireless tether for root app.

Google wifi tether, it will bring you to the current google code versions, itll be something like wifi tether beta7 it will be yellow instead of the typical green

I can confirm that beta 6 works 100%.
Just finally got success on gingerbread rooted Droid 2.
When we opened the settings, 'Droid X (CDMA)' was already selected.
I could have tried it before and selected that option in the past (and this maybe was reading those settings)
but with everything normal except Droid X (CDMA) chosen it works. Try it!

Wireless tether app v. 3 beta11 does not work for me even when set on DroidX (CDMA). Is free wireless tether with root a thing of the past? I've seen the TBH hack, but I don't run windows and I don't know if I trust myself messing with the phone that much...
Works fine for me on the 1/21 build of cm7

Niether one of the above mentioned versions work on my R2D2.
You need to get a hold of the team blackhat zip file that's the wifi hotspot hack, then you will flash it in clockwork mod recovery. After that download the latest wifi tether apk file and it will work.

Im using a rooted dinc2 does this blackhat.zip flash still apply?
Anybody get wifi tethering to work on rooted ginger 596?
Yeah Verizon added some code into the stock gingerbread build that lets them detect when an app is attempting to create a wifi network. So it high jacks you to their website. You can either use team black hats wifi tether fix, or use a custom rom that doesn't have that ****ty code in it. I'm currently using MIUI 2.2.10 and its basically a gingerbread rom with ICS features. You can run wifi tether no problem on it, it also has its own built in wifi tethering feature.
If you're gonna stick with gingerbread stock though, team black hats zip fix is most likely gonna be you're only solution.

Wifi tether

Hey all, I tried using multiple versions of the Wifi tether apk on google source and none of them worked. I had my tablet out and tried to connect on stock ssid and it wouldn't recognize it. However, with the same apk on my Nexus, the tablet would recognize it. Got any help?

open garden will work on your fascinate long as your using a touch wiz rom or any mtd rom other than ICS.
Google wifi tether will also work but you need to set as gsm galaxy nexus.
Ok, I just tired open garden and various google versions to tether. None worked when I tried to connect from my tablet.

Tether apps from the market will not work with your tablet, you need an infrastructure mode tether. Use WiFi Tether, then set the profile to Nexus One I believe...

And Mkuehl06 is right, you at least need to be rooted.

In that case go to Droidstyle's guide in general section. Find section 2 for tw roms, and follow the instructons to the letter for nitsuj's superclean rom. Its pretty much stock, then after that, find my guide on installing kernels, read through and pick one you like. I explained them a little in my first post, instructions are in the second post. After that, download open garden and you should have 0 issues.

Ya that will probably get it to work, except I don't think open garden allows infrastructure tethering (which most tablets require), so stick with your WiFI tether app if that doesn't work.

How can you expect to get accurate help when you provide very little detail? As sendan posted, list your FULL setup.
Ihave NOT flashed any other ROM to the device after I rooted it. I have tried auto, galaxy nexus gsm, fascinate, and nexus one profiles. There are no other modifications to the device other tham the root. It is on 2.3.5
