[Q] Android 4.0 and HD2 - Any future ? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

With Android 4.0 release today. Im raising the question. Is there any future and posibility of Droid 4.0 on HTC HD2 - Is Hardware of HD2 even capable of handle this system ?

I've been wondering about the same thing myself. After playing with the Samsung Galaxy S2 I decided that it's nice, but the advantages are not great enough for me to justify the expense. Looks like the hardware of the new Nexus phone will be a slightly upgraded S2, so at the end of the day it is all down to software.
Right now it's probably a bit early to say, but I'd expect the OS itself should run on the HD2 hardware. Experience might be smoother on higher end phones though. Then again, new high end devices will start getting 720p displays and compared to the decent, but dated by now, 800x480 display that will be a big increase when it comes to pixels rendered. So you will be getting faster hardware, but the beautiful display will probably eat into that processing power a bit.
If tytung and others can port stock ICS to the HD2 then I can probably make it last long enough until they release the S3 or whatever equivalent HTC superphone (though considering HTC's track record over the past few months they really need to get their act together, but that's a separate conversation).
Then again, we've seen very little of the stuff that ICS can do. I have no clue how much of an improvement it will be over 2.3.5. I hope it will be awesome, but I guess I'll find out in approximately 90 minutes

Are you kidding? lol Our superphone has been able to run pretty much anything including the kitchen sink.
It's just a matter of time for the rom to be ported to the HD2

The geniuses we have cooking here can do anything but solve third world poverty and debt.
I reckon the big question should be How soon do you reckon there will be a development thread with ICS rom as the title.

Just finished watching the liveblog and I'm reading through updates on engadget and thisismynext.
Phone itself looks pretty sweet, but I guess that is off topic... so ICS.
First impression really good, though I have to wait to see some more hands on to form a more informed opinion. Though from an HD2 stand point there are a few things I am worried about:
1) face recognition unlock, personally I think it's a gimmick and I am almost 100% sure this can be disabled; the demo failure was pretty bad as well; but I wonder whether Google will include a new set of hardware requirements in the same way that Windows Phone 7 does; and if they do, to what extent can they be bypassed
2) no word on compatibility or updates with older devices; this was an event held to push the new OS and new Samsung made phone so naturally they would focus on this, but still I am a bit worried that Google might decide that they will only allow the OS to exist on new hardware and will somehow put restrictions that will be very hard to ignore. Then again I am writing this 10 minutes after the keynote has finished, while I'm waiting for the first hands-on updates so possibly this might not even be an issue 10 minutes from now I guess they were talking about integrating the software and hardware so tightly (and some of the new features look like they really take the advantage of 720p res) that I'm worried that the OS running on a single core 800x480 device will look a bit rubbish. Ah, and they mentioned 720p as the native res for ICS. I'm guessing other resolutions will be available since it's impossible google will just assume that even lower end smartphones will have 720p screen, but I'm a bit worried how the UI elements will interact with a lower res display.
Oh well. Time will tell.
Overall I'm pretty chuffed. As usual there are a few new/polished features which I don't care about (face unlock, dictating texts, most of the camera improvements since I'm not that much into photo taking) and some stuff which they are missing. The big one being facebook. They said that any social network can use their API so hopefully that means some tighter integration at OS level, but time will tell. They are trying to push g+ obviously and I like it way more than fb, especially when it comes to mobile, but at the end of the day I'll always end up where most of my non-geek friends are. One other trend which has being gaining traction is the proliferation of profile photos, qhich can be very nice and make the UI come to life. But in my experience, quite often people won't have profile pics, because they haven't posted one or the contact exists just as a gmail address/phone number and isn't linked to any social network. That and most people put profile pics which are rubbish thumbnails that will look like a turd once you blow them up on a 4.3-4.65 screen which will suddenly look much less cool.
Anyway. These are VERY early impressions and are mostly positive. I hope there won't be many problems with porting this to the HD2. And if there are then I guess 2-2.5 years of valiant service is not a bad run.

We should be getting it. http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/19/google-confirms-nexus-s-will-get-ice-cream-sandwich-for-real/
Theoretically it should run on any Android 2.3 device.

Direct from Engadget :-
<We've just heard straight from Google's Gabe Cohen that the Nexus S will definitely be getting ICS. In fact, both he and Matias Duarte think most Gingerbread devices will see an upgrade, saying: Currently in the process for releasing Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S. Theoretically should work for any 2.3 device.>
So it should be fine

Hell Yes!! I guess there is still a difference between "run" and "run well" - iOS4 on iPhone 3G anyone? - but I'm really looking forward to it. This is awesome news. If they are rolling out ICS to the Nexus S then we might even see a usable ROM before the Galaxy Nexus hits retail.

Honestly, I don't think Google would release an OS that would run only on dual core devices, while they are still far from being top sellers. There are way more single-core devices out there...
Beside, while dual core devices are obviously faster (I have a Tab 10.1 myself)...that's pretty much it ! Games will run smoother but not the OS itself. You don't feel the dual core is fully used.
I guess that things will get trickier for our HD2 at the end of 2012 when dual core will be more implemented.
So sit back and wait for AOSP/CM9.

Looks like the SDK and the G-Nex system dump are both out...
Hope we see a ROM for the HD2 soon!

ICS has no new hardware requirements so doesnt matter how old the device is, if it was capable to run gingerbread than your good for ICS
Carriers won’t have to use nasty schemes to make people buy a new phone either, i wonder what their marketing trick for devices with ICS will be.
That Google wouldnt release an OS that would run only on dual core devices is also true, and dual core support doesnt even mean your device will run better, it just handles multitasking better.
(My old 3.2ghz dual core laptop runs faster than my new 2.0ghz quad core )

Just see and hope

hope i can try!

hope that cooming soon, how about NexusHD2-Ice Cream Sandwich rom by tytung ^^ lol

i hope ics can be ported for our hd2

The only thing that most certainly will not work is the face unlock feature. Although even then they might make it use the back camera .
Add to that the 1080p recording and those are the only things I don't see ever working on our beloved hd2.
Fortunately, it's android 4.0 and they still didn't iron out our phone. ICS will be possible on hd2. Hope it sees even 5.0 and onwards.

I'm fairly sure CM9 will come up with a back camera work around...

I have to admit i was wondering myself if ICS would run on our HD2 after hearing that the coding in ICS was built for dual core.. but the devs here and the hd2 can conquer anything.. even android Jello, kitkat, licorise, and muffin lol jk

After Froyo.. Gingerbread (Details inside)

while everyone is still reveling in Froyo and 2.2 i wondered what the next big thing was.. Not sure if anyones posted this. so here ya go.

We’ve been hearing about the upcoming Android Gingerbread release in Q4 for a while now. And also how the new Android user interface will blow our socks off.
Still, everyone’s been pretty sketchy about exact details of what’s actually coming to Android Gingerbread. Until now.
Mobile-review.com’s Eldar Murtazin just went and spilled a boatload of interesting details about the upcoming Android Gingerbread release. Don’t run searching for these details to his blog or his main site, you won’t find anything there yet.
Eldar did all the spilling in his Russian podcast “Digestiv”. It’s audio only, so Google Translate won’t help you much. If you do not speak Russian, you’ll have to trust me on this
Her we go:
Android 3.0 Gingerbread will be released in mid- October (around 15 -16th), 2010. First handsets shipping in November/December – for the Holiday Season.
Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher. (We all, of course, heard that Android handsets with 2GHz CPU’s are coming)
New 1280×760 resolution available for the devices with displays of 4” and higher. (Anyone thinking about Android tablets now? )
Completely revamped user interface. If you want to get a feeling of what Android 3.0 Gingerbread UX is like, check out the Gallery App on Nexus One. The same overall feel, light animated transitions, etc. Natively, through all the UI.
Android’s split into 2 branches becomes official. 3.0 for top of the line/high end devices. Cheap, low-end mass market handsets will keep Android 2.1/2.2
Eldar also confirmed my musings about the death of third party User Interface shells like HTC Sense, MotoBlur, etc;. Android 3.0 basically kills the need for them.
Still, there’s some hope for third party vendors here – while Google takes over the UI on the high end, vendors get to keep their UI shells/improvements on mass market Android smartphones, running Eclair or Froyo.
Update: I posted an update to this post, where I address Dan Morrill’s tweet, and do some corrections/clarifications regarding the upcoming Android update number issues, “minimum” specs – thay are actually only “recommended”, and the the split between high end Android 3 – low end Android 2.2 devices – it’s not an official Google policy, but it is happening nonetheless.
I'd say. Android 2.x seems to run just fine on the underpowered devices such as the Moment/Intercept, and yet it screams on my EVO. It screams even more with 2.2 and the new java compiler. I'd have a hard time believing that 3.0 is so advanced as to absolutely require 1 GHz. I'd think it's the same as Windows 7. Works swell on an Atom single-core, but really jacks up on an i7.
As for Google taking over the UI aspect, I don't believe for a minute that HTC will stand for it.

what are you talking about google already Has UI control and they let venders (sprint, verizon) meddle with it to theyre specifications.. This article just confirms they will continue the same business practice.

Anyhow, I think vanilla android needs a huge UI refresh. Perhaps I'll look at going senseless with 3.0.
It would be even better if they got TAT to redo it with that flowing curtain UI I saw them demo on engadget. That would be sick.
Spoken into my EVO cause I'm probably driving

While it's a little bit flashy for me (I like to keep it clean and simple, yet very functional) I'm almost drooling over tat. I want it on my evo right now.
Any word on when it'll be out?
WOW
Thanks for the link, that was impressive. After reading their page, I can't believe they don't have plans to release that on the market, that thing would sell like hotcakes once the word got out. If anyone is testing that and has access to it, could they send me a message here please

After Gingerbread... Honeycomb
http://gizmodo.com/5628353/samsung-confirms-honeycomb-will-follow-gingerbread-in-android-name+game
First off that TIT home replacement looks pretty cool, I could see a lot of people buying that.
However I don't see it being as big as HTC Sense or Moto Blur, after reading the FAQ it says that they aren't looking to release it in the android market anytime soon, but rather sell it to verizon, sprint, or samsung to use on a flagship TIT phone.
which I think is a huge mistake, especially when Android says 3.0 is going to bring major UI improvements that will decrease the amount of tweaks to the android OS, (HTC Sense, Moto blur)
However android 3.0 sounds great.
The way I think about it is, imagine the chage that 2.1 brought from 1.5 on a Hero (if you had one) or the major UI revamp,
2.0 brought new icons, app improvements, everything looked really nice.
The market in 1.5 and 1.6 looked down right horrible, black background, with grey colors.
2.0 made a huge difference in terms of making android looks like a serios OS.
2.1 improved the lock screen, screens, live wallpapers(few other things)
2.2 brought flash, huge speed improvement, more support, and many many more cool features.
If 3.0 is as hyped up as its supposed to be its gonna be awesome!
However it is needed, because some parts of the android OS need work.
for example the settings, and other menus are black and boring, users like seeing alot of colors and a nice screen and all that good stuff.
yeah, my EVO has an 800*480 screen resolution, but when certain parts of the OS look dark, and boring it doesn't make it look as nice.

Android on samsung focus?

Hello all.
I wonder if it's possible to install dual boot on samsung focus, with
Windows Mobile 7.
Thanks.

If you don't like WP7, get urself a Captivate. They even share a same battery. I'm out of laggy, battery draining Android.

I can understand people wanting both OSes, but if you just want Android, you should just sell your Focus and buy the Captivate. The latter is a better looking device (I have one).
I go back and forth between the two, and each has clear advantages and disadvantages over the other. If I had to pick ONE, I would probably go with the Captivate (custom ROM), but the Focus isn't very far behind, which is saying a volume about the first execution from Microsoft.
I am no MS fanboy (and is there such a thing?), but I think WP7 is something MS got mostly right first time around. There are clearly issues with WP7, but nothing compared to the first incarnation of Android (just ask people who had to endure through the early devices -- e.g. HTC G1 -- and their subsequent updates). Android prominence didn't materialize until 2.0 (Eclair) with Motorola Droid and a flurry of subsequent 2.x-based devices from Motorola, Samsung and HTC.

Same back and forth here
For most of the time my SIM is in Focus cause the long-lasting battery life and better working GPS. My captivate usually cannot last longer than 18 hours without flight mode. But when I'm out of town I switch to Captivate. Bing map has too little information.

Similar here...
Captivate +'s:
+ Tons of apps
+ Better market/shopping experience
+ Better search + voice recognition
+ Better Google service integrations (e.g. Google Voice, Books, etc.)
+ Better maps (including Navigation)
+ Flash support
+ Better looking (subjective but the textured backcover looks 100x better than the plastic one on the Focus)
+ More ways to customize (e.g. change the launcher)
+ Multitasking
Focus +'s:
+ Better Exchange integration
+ Better MS Office support (e.g. very accurate view of pptx files)
+ VERY fluid UI (try smooth pinch to zoom on Android)
+ Better music player + PC sync (Zune is second to none)
+ Better international roaming support (e.g. adjusting to timezone in Calendar)
+ Better battery life by a long shot
+ Better GPS signals and faster fixes
+ Dedicated Camera button + LED
I'm very disappointed because I wanted the focus samsung also bear
the android.
I see many applications for it, and everyone says that the android is better.
I'll probably sell because I like to take advantage of the phone and not
I think that having the wm7 possible.
Thank you all

I'm currently running both (Focus and Captivate) as stock. Focus is very slick with the UI and very it's very fluid with no lag. Captivate has nice WiFi hotspot capability, no MMS issues and no SD card issues. And yes swapping the battery is simple since it's the same battery for both models. Sometimes one phone can't do it all. If Apple had a user replaceable/swappable battery, and changed to a Micro or Mini USB type connection to PC, had SD card slot, they would have a clear winner. But they don't hence the WP7 phone. I'm actually glad to be back on the MSF platform after many WinMo phones, and can't wait for the updates. I would say out of the gate, MSF and Google have good phones and same with Apple. It just might be that no one will build an ultimate phone as then we would have no incentive to buy the latest model as quickly as we do now. That would affect everyone's bottom line (sales revenue $) but eventually the device is not where the money will be with these phones. It will be services and the "cloud" and that is where Microsoft will win. So for now we all live half decent phones. Eventually some one will build a great phone, to equally match the sevices from the cloud. What Microsoft did with the PC OS they will do with their phone platform. So hang onto those Samsung Focus devices because it will be a pleasure to own.
lol, i switched from iPhone 4 to WM7, besides less app selection, the phone performs equally well in terms of speed and UI transition.
Played with android in stores as well, slow UI and from what i heard... battery die quick.

No phone on earth got dual system support so far.
Focus is a WP7 device, even if someone put Android on it by chance, it's going to buggy and unusable.

I have mine setup that way and i love it . I am on WM7 most of the time though, unless i go out of town and I need navigation. I have a Focus as well but had to give it to my younger sister because she lost her Captivate, but she did like the Focus much better due to better battery life, fb integration and overall very fluid ui.
check out AtoB app on windows phone 7.
it has turn by turn navigation. not perfect, but, pretty usable
I fell victim to the WP7 promise
I purchased a Focus within a week of it being released. I knew there were shortcomings but really did believe all the Hype of a quick update process to get some of the missing features in. Now that the update process has been completely botched with "Copy / Paste" being the only apparent "feature" added. Even worse now knowing the [email protected] controls the release of the updates I doubt I'll see the things I really need until sometime next year.
I can't wait that long. I travel and need a real navigation program. I use Pandora and Sirius XM and I miss having that on my phone. Also my banking App and all the websites that use flash and do not work.
Last week after learning the "official" update is no where in sight for this phone (I don't think I should have to screw around trying to force an update) I went and bought a Motorola Atrix. This is my first Android and my first non-WinMo phone in something like 12 years.
Now I have what I need. The Motorola is pretty slick and with all the little "widgets" you can get more info up front than the live tiles provided.
I am a die hard MS fan but I truly think they blew it with WP7. I even considered going back to my old Rhodium because it did more than the Samsung, it was just underpowered and therefore constantly crashing. I think I'll be happy with this Atrix though.......so far it has it all.

yup i totally agreed that android is completely trash, google buy back android and claimed that its theirs which so shame of them , laggy , bad battery life and so on are something which not necessary to mention anymore as this is so well known, horrible UI , stupid browser without gpu accel, it suck really..if you think android is that good , do not buy samsung focus then, because a good mobile OS dont need dual OS, one OS for all already enough..the answer is Windows Phone 7

Moving from Android to Omnia7 ?

I would like to know Omnia7 owners opinions on this phone.
All the reviews I read are reviewing Omnia 7 last year october/november/december.
I would like to know whether there are updates which solve most criticized problems with version used for review.
Also whether it is easy to synchronize Google contacts and emails, whether there are apps for navigation and other common tasks.
Thank you.
Read the Windows Phone 7 threads. It's all there.

only if you have the galaxy sii stay on android otherwise come to omnia7
no prob here with omnia7 i have march firmware and mango 7712
If I had a chance, I would go back to Android in a blink of an eye!
WP7 in general is very slick and complete (more complete when mango arrives). But Omnia 7 has been a let down to me as a phone, not for its "smart" features but for its lack in ability to make clear crisp calls..
I had my dad and gf both get new androids (Galaxy SII and Incredible S) and they are definitely more customizable and have a large market of apps for everything. I borrow their phones for the day whenever I know important calls are coming my way.. and the fact that Samsung are failing to recognize the problem and act fast, sucks..
I am waiting out my 2 years contract rofl -.-
I switched from Samsung Galaxy SII to Omnia7 two weeks ago. SGSII is full of bugs and Android cannot compete with WP7 in terms of usability.
Android has every feature and function you can think of but only few of them are really working without problems.
For me, WP7 ist much better -even though the SGSII is a fine piece of hardware, the software sucks.

I would have gladly gladly swapped with you
Because you have only been on Omnia 7 for 2 weeks, you may not have noticed any of the bugs and issues yet (or if lucky, wont run into them at all).
Because of the immense customisation capabilities of Android, there would be a few compatability issues here and there. But there is most likely a identical app that supports the particular rom, overclock, or launcher.
SGS and SGSII's display is much more vibrant than the omnia 7. Just need to wait and see how Mango can improve on this item..
I played with the SGS2 over the weekend and I must say I'm very impressed at the improvement over the Galaxy S. Display has very nice contrast and everything was smooth. Device was very light too.
However, I still hate the UI. Never could understand what's with the grid layout and the constant necessity flip between the home screen tabs for apps and widgets. And at version 4.0, I STILL can't set the Calendar week to start on a Sunday.
So I'm sticking with my Omnia 7, at least until Mango shows itself to be a failure (no Smart Dial, seriously MS???).
There's some omissions in present-day WP7 that seem to be ridiculous. Come Mango, I would consider WP7 to be up there (or almost there) in terms of functionality.

No, that's not the point. I bought the Omnia7 at the day of the release last Autumn. Then I've used it until May, bought the Galaxy SII and gave my Omnia7 to my girlfriend.
After 3 months I couldn't stand Android anymore and sold the SGSII for a new Omnia7 (and some bucks spare, of course )
I've really tried both of the system for some time and for me, personally, WP7 wins
It is not the right time switching to Windows Phone 7. There are too many fundamental functions not implemented with the OS. Also there are only few useful apps available on the Marketplace.

My thoughts exactly. no apps, no solid games, no proper phone call ability eheh
If you get an android and are happy with it, then its all good. but if your not, there is so much room for modding and overclocking and customising.
With my omnia7, the best customisation i have is dark blue tiles lol.
I'm sure as mentioned earlier, when mango comes around, things may get better
I have no clue how many games you play, but there are currently a lot out there. Most of the XBox Live games are good quality, the most popular from other OSs have been ported (like Doodle Jump, Angry Birds, ...). You can't exactly say there are no apps out there either. The main limit which is a bit sad is the lack of sockets (also sensors, will also be fixed) support which limits the types of apps available but this will be fixed in mango. I really don't know what applications you are looking for but im sure that some alternatives probably exist unless it is not available because of API restrictions, most of which will be resolved in mango. You could also always start developing yourself
Now I know there are some features like wifi tethering which would be cool to have, but most of the modding and overclocking seems kinda pointless on a phone and you may just want to play one of the many great games out there instead...

[DEBATE] Android optimisation problem

I am not Apple fanboy, but i think that Anddroid OS has a big optimisation problem.
For example the iphone 4S had a CPU 800 Mz and it seem to be real fast. But the latest Androphone plan to use Dual CPU. Is Android OS needed more ressources than iOS?
Before make effort to get more material ressources, is n't time for google to optimise his OS ?
Symbian was an OS whitch was too optimsed and i would like to have an Android OS like that.
Someones wouldnt like what i said but it is my deep think.
+1 BRO !!!!
I really dont know why the **** iOS is that smooth, never noticed any lag on an Iphone. But you should think about that : Every Phone needs his own setup, caused of CPU, GPU and other things like ram and so on....
every iPhone got the same setup, optimized for iPhone 4 , iPhone 3GS and so one. They all got the same CPU and GPU, so they really can tweak every singe hardware.
Google just give us a source code, which every Company, Like Samsung or HTC have to port on their new device...
By the way, HTC got much better optimized Original Roms than Samsung. ( I have seen some OFW running on HTC Desire, and they are very smooth... )

It is same way as MS passed: one simple question to you: how would you like to optimize the OS against HUNDREDS of available hardware combinations?
Of course, the Apple choice is easy and smooth: ONE hardware set, ONE OS.
similar was already done by Ford with model T: everyone could have it with favourite colour, as long as it was black. and now the ford position on global market is...
it's easy to optimize a software for 1 device but for 10000+ devices it's not that easy

If google doesn't optimise the OS. He may do it for his phones. take a look at the future Nexus prime it will get a dual core CPU. But don't think that is necessary if the OS is much optimise. The ipohne 4S had only a CPU at 800MHZ

But a think that the OS is not optimise for googles phones. Otherwise why will they use a dual core CPU in Nexus Prime?
I thought the difference in speed was because of the way they handled multitasking. It was only recently that iOS even had multitasking. But this is probably just a part of the reason why iOS is faster.

iPhone 4S: 1 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor
They both have dual-cores.
Yea ios is optimized better. But it also doesn't have many basic features like android. Like a proper customizable homescreen with the ability to chose your launcher (no, lockscreen and an app tray are NOT an homescreen like apple has been trying to sell it), widgets, proper multitask, proper application integration, live wallpapers, lack of an external SD, etc. That makes for a lightweight system. You gain speed but lose features.
That said, granted, android needs to be generic. But as soon as a big company like samsung picks up android and starts developing to one device of their own making, this "1 OS for all devices" gap ceases to exist. Its 1 OS being optimized to a single piece hardware, and they have all they need for proper optimization.
This isn't the same as windows -> 1000 kinds of hardware. Windows comes prepared from Microsoft to run everywhere so that applies. Android doesn't come prepared to run everywhere from google. You can't simply just download and put it on your phone regardless of brand. Has an extra step of preparation from hardware developing companies like HTC or Samsung.
What i'm trying to say is, there is room for optimization. But companies don't care much because they are on a tight schedule on market competition to put out the next big thing, have hardware specs to compensate for poorly optimized coding and in the end stuff works just the same, since most people, sadly, won't notice or care that much for those extra delays/lags.
Can't speak for other brands, but Samsung proved with SGS they don't care much for good coding. The community has been, since its release, improving this phone leaps and bounds and continue to do so even though a successor has shown up.
At the end, companies don't care enough, imo.

Iphones are smooth because iOS was designed to work on one device (technically, 9 devices if you count all the variants of iphones, ipads and ipods) only whereas Android has to work on hundreds of devices with different processors and hardware.
Also, iOS removes so many functionalities from the user, hence has more free ram.

The job of compagnies like SAMSUNG, HTC ... isn't to optimise the OS for they devices? To say that there are more devices is not an apologizes
First step then should be: CLOSE the system. Lock it all, and after that, you can optimize system individually for each phone, completely separately. Another option is to push Samsung, HTC, LG, SE or whoever else to have SAME hardware configuration.
Then: you will loose:
- all custom ROMs, bootloaders, CWM, root, kernels;
- all customized versions of stock apk's, like phone, start screens, themes, Market etc.
- ANY ROM update will be available only after OFFICIAL release, through Kies.
Well, xda does pretty good work with optimization, while Android is kept OPEN, not locked, like iOS.
I personally prefer that it will continue this way.

??? Why are you stating that they are not doing this? But, one thing: DO NOT flash everything available here, but just stay with OFFICIALLY released ROM's, via Kies (in case of SGS).
For example: JVR, JVS, JVT ROM's are not officially released, and then any claim that the sys is not optimized is pointless.
Whilst the first post is correct regarding speed and optimisations they fail to realise that Apple have only their own hardware to work on, so they can really work it until its perfectly optimised.
Google have one device to work on, but multiple manufactures use their open source platform using different hardware, so its up to them to optimise the software for their hardware, not google.
You also failed to quote correct hardware specs for the iphone, which has dual core and I believe as much memory as the galaxy s2... So it does sound like your trying to bash android with incorrectly informed arguments.
Just to close the item, and to proof how optimised the IOS is, the recent update, iOS 5, caused vanishing of the music, files, messages, contacts, customised folders and applications for not very small group of users:
Brilliant iOS5 update, example 1
Error 3200 and 3004
3002, 3200, 3194
So, I think that the conclusion may be:
Apple has much more simple way to optimise their sys, because they have much less kind of hardware than Google.
But, Apple is not able to manage even so small amount of the hardware variations, and iPhone CAN go smoothly on its 2 cores CPU (yes, dear OP, read the specs more closely) if Apple will not mess the sys or its update... what just happened.
It's only multitasking problem.suspend and resume of iOS paid off better although you miss some features because of that but on all basic features it way better.
I always wonder why dialer and messaging apps sent out of memory, they should have been kept in memory like browser.
We shouldn't be nagging much about it as things can be done by Android are much more.

I can't predict the future of course, but it is not unlikely we will see some performance increase with ICS.
I would deem it likely that ICS will use HC's memory manager which is definitely faster than GBs, especially when used with programs that are massive memory hogs. HC's still constantly frees memory it doesn't need to free though ( == waste of cycles), so there is still room for improvement there, let's hope ICS brings it.
Likewise, UI hardware acceleration is already better in HC than it was in GB, and it is rumored to be further improved in ICS. If that is true, ICS devices will likely seem much more fluent. It doesn't actually make them faster, but it will look that way.
In the end, iOS is much more optimized than Android, but ICS should be a good step in the right direction. It will probably not bring the optimization to an iOS level, though.

Disable to slight extent. I felt that Samsung have done something to the ROMs they provide for SGS. Example the old RFS filesystem, lags like hell in the past but feels good now. Im using RFS instead of EXT4. Still, I have to agree, they don't care much on good coding, new phones are coming up, why bother? The community makes it happen
Apple hires a ton of CPU architects solely for this purpose. Apple prioritizes fluency and optimization above features and openness.
Just a different strategy, no better, no worse.

My mate has the latest iPhone his wife had the SGSII, I had the chance to compare them both side by side last night. What can I say except the SGS is larger, faster, smoother, has more apps, more customisable, the difference is amazing. The iPhone is like
a kiddies toy compared to the SGS.
Remember that the iPhone has been going a lot longer than Android, yet Android had had voice recognition for over a year. Enough said

Windows phone vs Android

A little off-topic guys.
Christmas is coming and telephone operators are throwing really very "nasty" offers. I have a choice to get Samsung Galaxy S2 or Nokia Lumia 800 for 0€. Inspite of really nice SG2 phone I'm so tempted to get to Microsoft camp and get a taste of Mango. Damn it's hard to decide.
The only big drawback of Nokia phone I find is missing option of usb mass storage. So dumb! What they were thinking off?
SG2 only drawback is that it's already getting old, and yeah, it's Android
Nokia Lumia 800
Samsung Galaxy S2
Your choice?
Keep the Hero
If I need to choose betwein those 2, the android one, but I would not pick either.
Thanks for your opinion. I would pick Galaxy Nexus, but unfortunately it is out of my budget.

That is the one I want, not that any pocket in any pants I got is big enough for it. The hero hardly fits and no not really a handbag person... And yes I am tiny.. so I got tiny pants
---------- Post added at 09:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:52 PM ----------
Just want to add something. How I think on getting new stuff. If I want something new. I want to make sure it is the thing that I want. And not a thing that is maybe cheaper but not the thing that I want. In this case that is an android phone that runs 2.3 I do not want that. I want to start with 4.0. But some say the GPS on the Nexus is crap. Not that I know of. but I will see what I will get in like 4 months or so. Happy with this device.
I would pick android. Think of what has made ur hero last this long. It is because you can tweak and customize it and upgrade to newer os versions even though it's old.
sent with love from me to you
LOL you shouldn't have to think about that really IMHO.. The lumia is plainly UGLY and windows phone is CRAP.. the sgs2 all the way. Android hands down mate, plus the sgs2 beats the lumia specs wise too. It's a win win situation.

dude the lumia is absolutely GORGEOUS! It's so pretty I am genuinely considering dealing with all the poor specs just to wrap my unworthy hands around it.
I just can't give a serieus answer, isn't it obvious which one to choose? SGS II is better in every way and believe me when windows phone 8.0 comes out you are going to be so sorry for choosing the lumia instead of the SGS II, in the future you can update the SGS II with and without a custom rom to android 4.0 and up. There aint much to think about just saying..
Lumia is a nice phone and Mango has sorted much of the issues with wp 7, though on long run (2 yrs) i'm considering if i'd be happy with it. kinda in the same spot looking what to get, but i'm between Sensation and incredible S (affordable) on the android front and Lumia and Titan on the wp7 front.
I would pick Samsung Galaxy S2 ... just because i don't like the interface of a Windows Phone . The OS is ugly as hell, I was in a store last week looking at some phones and I almost puked after 30 seconds of looking at Windows Phones but I recovered while looking at the Home Screen of my HTC Hero. Android's interface is great and by far the best... but that's my opinion and everyone likes different things.
Stick to Android alot more customizable
Even though m getting a sensation still wanna learn more abt Android, n my hero is probably the best testing ground
Sent from my Hero using xda premium
The sgs2 is an awesome phone, but have you considered the new Sony erricson? The arc s.. it's in your budget and with a whopping 1.4ghz processor and impressive looks in comparison to the sgs2 you can't go wrong
Sent from my Hero using xda premium
I would go for SGS2 as it is still among the best android phone available atm.
Plus, there is plenty of development interest going on for SGS2, with lot's of flashing around so you won't be bored for a long time.
It still has got the best available specs for hardwarewise.
It does not have the Arc's dreaded housing crack problem.
It does not have the HTC's Sensation and like models of dust under the screen as faced by some users.
The only thing you may miss is there's no Sense.
Or..if not
Just grab the one that has got the highest resale value.
Sell it off when it's new to finance your purchase of your dream phone (a Galaxy Nexus perhaps?).
Don't dismiss WP7 until you've tried it. I think windows phone has got a bad reputation from previous versions but after using WP7 on a HTC Mozart I think that it is incredible. It is so unique and I only know one other person who has one. For me, I think I'm going towards WP7
There is serious reason I want to quit Android camp.
The problem with android is that it is too open. There is a limit with providing good SDK and allowing to make apps based only on it or allowing to do whatever you want and making crapload of ****. Android programmer base is so dumb, they don't know anything about performance or battery optimization or background task handling. Android market is blunt loaded with web page scrappers, wrappers and xml parsers. To make a some mobile web page wrapper takes me 5 min and some don't even have any shame to ask money for that. Majority of Android app devs are just amateurs, weekend java programmers or ex web developers with no any clue what mobile platform is and that there is some limit in available RAM, processing power, storage and etc.
Android market maybe is a lot bigger than windows market, but when you look at quality then we come down to the same number or even worse.
Sorry for rant, but 2 years ago I put big fate in Android and Google which totally failed me by providing competitive mobile platform. Android, even with ICS 4.0 today is still 2 years behind iOS and now also WM7. They need 2 dual core most powerful CPUs in a world to accomplish the same task what WM7 can do with single core and half RAM and even then they fail.
Oh well .....
iOS vs Android vs Window Phone
This is a major problem these days. I was thinking to get a new phone these days to...so i spent a lot of time in reading about the new features the platforms have to offer and it seems that there are lot of tiny parts in every os that make every day use to be more exciting and easy.
I will start to make a comparison on every os on what is has or what's missing
1.Windows Phone
-it's snappy
-interesting interface
-facebook and tweeter integrated
-easy to use
-microsoft servers with 30 GB space to store media
-no OTA updates
-no usb storage (you need a program to do that)
-limited hardware (this is because microsoft made a decision on this part)
-multitasking is not in real time
-the number of app is limited (~35k)
-not open sourced...so if your phone gets old, it's harder to make some custom roms
2.Android
-snappy but sometimes laggy
-usb storage
-full customization of the screens
-real time multitasking
-since 4.0 we have a better browsing experience
-lot's of app
-easy to make a rom or flash one
-Google apps (Maps + navigation = damn i'm in love )
-the new gen of phones get big screens and that's very stupid (as lira said...it can't fit in the pocket and i fully agree)
-i hate the part when a new version of android appears and it takes months to get an updated phone
-in some roms we have to much apps from the developer (take htc for example)
-i think the system needs better and better hardware so you can get a better experience
3.iOs
-snappy
-the os with the biggets number of apps
-very easy to use
-every new version can be installed after it appears (if your phone can handle it)
-since we talk about iOs we talk about iphone and on thing that i like is that is has a 3.5 screen
-it has siri and it's fun and useful
-good browsing
-no usb storage...but i heard that you don't need iTunes if you need to transfer a document or things like that (not sure there)
-no customization on the screen, just icons of the programs that you have
-no OTA updates
-can't make a custom rom
@ every rom - maybe i missed some stuff
@whitealien -> not into nokia (WP7.5) since it has stupid limitation and to much social stuff (i don't use facebook or things like that)
-SGS II is a good phone, lot's of people use it and want it and since i know some friends that had an iPhone and now have a SGS II and are more pleased with it
-sometimes i think why buy a phone and not a tablet, that's better thank a phone from more points : starting from gaming and finishing with watching movies.
The choice is your...i'm tempted to get a new phone and change the platform to see new things but i realize that android gets new and new features every day.
I think that it's better to wait for the release of the SGS III and the new qualcomm S4 chips or tegra III on phones [but why need these chips when you can do your every day use with a dual core phone without any problems??]

I will a little argue with this. No OTA updates - there is updates and Nokia is taking it very serious. They just rolled one out on 7 dec.
- limited HW, you mean a little outdated? Thats true, only single core and 512RAM, but seems to be enough
- multitasking is not in real time - not entirely true, it depends how apps are programmed. They can work in bg if they are programmed to
- the number of app is limited (~35k) - are you serious , I never had more than 50 apps installed
- my very 1st smartphone was HTC Touch Polaris with WM6.5 so I know what closed source is
I found 5 major flaws in Lumia 800
1. only 16Gb integrated storage
2. no usb mass storage
3. no front camera (really, these days?)
4. no notification LEDS, not even one single led, lol.
5. Pentile Amoled display
And yeah SG2 is not perfect too. Build quality is so poor. Back cover is cheap and fragile. Have seen broken ones. Also whole construction is fragile, including big screen. Don't ever put it in your jeans back pocket or you will regret

Well, if they were not obsessed with huge phones, enormous screens, poor battery life, sad build style (all gray or black) and somehow over blunted Sense (comon, why there is weather animation everywhere, even in lockscreen) maybe I would go HTC. My 1st idea was to take HTC Radar, but at closer look I find it kinda too big for offered screen size (the bottom part is so long). White is cool so.

you will not be as happy if you leave android imho.
I'm surprised this is even a serious discussion.

or for those who are looking for very simple user experience without any interest in customization or for "power user" features
)
... that iOS is quite inferior to Android in many ways.
Apple notifications were almost useless until ios 5 and even now are only scratching the surface of what android notifications provide.
ios gives you app icons on your home screen. that's it. no widgets or spaces or custom layouts or sources of useful dynamic information (other htan completely USELESS counters on each icon showing outstanding notification events that have passed wihtout your knowledge because of how crappy iOS's notifications are).
ios gives you no customization other than crappy ordering control which is forgetful
I work wtih an ipad daily and it is a PAIN IN THE ASS - I have learned to hate iOS, specially for tablets or power users, but even for a phone os it is truly annoying and very limited.
windows phone is cool but also limiting, very very limiting, and has rather poor app support at the moment compared to either of the big ones.
there are several reasons why android has become the most popular mobile phone OS - and it isn't just because google gives it away for free.
It's also because Android is the only one that is fully customizable. windows phone is SORT of but not nearly as truly customizable as android.
IMHO the windows phone launcher fake app for android (in the market) is actually superior to the real windows phone device I was playing with because it supported android widgets. But if you want to try out windows phone 7, get that launcher - it truly does give you the winphone7 experience with all it's boring limitations.
the thing that's great about apple devices is the huge and still superior application/game support (if you spend the bucks or jailbreak it then install installous and cydia).
I used to say that iOS was better for little kids. but my little kids (2 and 5 at the time) used android tablets without ANY trouble at all. my little kids (now 3 and 6) use an iPAD without many issues either but do get confused when holding a finger too long on an icon and then out of hte blue they all start wiggling and next thing I know apps are being deleted by little fingers. Android turns out to be far more intuitive in this regard compared to iOS. sometimes dumbing down the OS can be taken to the point of making it more complex to understand. It's an either or situation here, but typically in other ways I do think iOS is easier for very very simplistic minds to accept. This should not be a benefit for anyone here however LoL.
the thing that makes android superior for adults is it's ability to be completely and easily customized for everyone who uses it. it's YOUR phone, use it how you like. don't let apple tell you that you can't sync on this computer wtih this itunes on this day in this weather - I swear to god it is nearly that flaky and limiting to use iOS devices. you have music on your phone and want to copy it to your friend's phone? nope. you want your frien'ds music? nope. not unless you're lugging your laptop around so you can copy the files to/from your itunes folder, NOT directly to/from the device.
also android has a free terminal emulator app in the market. it works perfectly and runs bash as well as my desktop. iOS runs somehting similar but makes it incredibly hard to get that sort of control, even after jailbreaking and installing tons of underground apps it is still a kludgy and unreliable bash prompt control system you get in ios which requires a separate terminal emulator to control it (even a term app on your same device will get you there, but that alone is pretty annoying to have to deal with since you first have to actually get your low level underlying linux type system working on the iOS device....)
maybe some of my iOS negative points are improved in ios 5 but it is still light years behind the flexibility that we are all imho owed by buying the device and buying a license to use the operating system in the first place. I OWN my files. I can put them on my phone or my friend's phone if I choose to.
I buy a mac or a windows computer and I can get at all parts of the OS and mess around with it completely. why can't I do that on an iPAD that costs 2 to 3 times as much as a similar android tablet which is a full linux-based computer right from the get go?
I have a lot of inside info and have watched the devices and OSes grow and change over the years. Historically, in many ways, the best os for smart phones was palm webOS. but the hardware/company were slow/moronic respectively (which is why my brother quit as VP of Engineering of PalmSource... check this link for an interview with him back when things were still early and exciting at palm's mobile operating system dev company: http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/...w-Michael-Kelley-and-John-Cook-of-PalmSource/ )
Anyway - android is quite literally the only way to go for a mobile OS at this time if you dont' want to be tied down to a specific vendor/company of hardware and don't want to be given one user interface with one way to operate the phone.
Ever noticed now winphone7 uses only about 60% of your display for it's main UI? annoying, at best.
yes, they're quick, iOS and winmo7 devices. and yes every brand has good hardware (and bad in some cases). however htc android devices do reign supreme in popularity and market share for a good reason (as outlined above by me and others). but even stock android devices are way cool.
having worked with android tables/phones and ios tablets/phones I have decided very definitely that I will never buy an ios device. having worked with winphone7 for a short time I found it quite acceptable, like iOS. but extremely uninspiring and it's customizability is even worse than iOS's.
