Need a tad of help - Windows 8 General

Me and a small group of friends are working on getting the windows media center from windows 7 running on this beautiful OS. But we have run into a wall. As you most likely know, windows media center needs windows media player to run. WE tried opening it with (to our knowledge) no windows media player on the computer, with a bit of hope. This failed and disappointed us a bit. So we procedded to go get the latest install of windows media player, but as we tried to install it, it said there is a better version already installed. WE dug through every folder and simply cant seem to find this "newer version" of windows media player. And Media center needs an older version of it to run. this means Microsoft is hiding things from us agian much like they did with the win 98 and previews. If anyone can think of where they may have put it or what is causing this install error please tell me.
Thanx

Windows Mobile Media Player problem...

Hi All,
I have recently been getting an error message in Windows Mobile Media Player (Windows Media Player) on my XDA Mini S saying;
"No combination of intermediate filters could be found to make the connection"
And i cant seem to figure out why. I cannot play any videos or sound clips on my mobile, and i cannot find an alternative way to view video or sound files on my XDA.
Is there any chance anyone knows where i can download a new versionof Windows media player for my Windows mobile 5 device? or does anybody have any resolution for this?
Thanks for your time
I do not think there is a newer version to this problem but I was recently having trouble with WMP and I downloaded Pocket Player and have really liked it.
Doesn't seem to have that many bugs, has a today plugin (if wanted), is quite easy to use - maybe give it a try!
Where did you download Pocket Player from? and was it free etc... because i have searched on www.pocketgear.com and it is $19.99
To be honest, i really wasnt planning on paying for a Media player, however, if i cannot get the media player on my phone fixed, i will have no choice!
Thanks
Have you tried cold booting? Or TCPMP?
Yes PocketPlayer does cost you; I understand not wanting to pay for a media player especially since one that is supposed to work comes with the phone - i just couldn't deal with WMP.
Try TCPMC - its free and it may not have all the organizational features of WMP, but does play DivX files

Windows Media for Samsung Blackjack (i607) - PLEASE HELP!!!!

I am not very tech savvy so I have no idea how to fix this issue I'm having. I was referred to this site, though.
Just this morning my Windows Media Player on my Blackjack stopped working. I was watching a clip in windows media, and when moving on to watch the next, it wouldn't even open it. i tried different clips on every site i could think of - streaming and downloaded - and nothing works.
What can I do? I would prefer NOT to do a hard re-set (which is why I'm here). I would prefer to just be able to download or upgrade versions of windows media to fix this. Can anyone help me, please?!

Subscription Music

I posted over at PPCGeeks but haven't had any hits yet. I am on the latest Juicy8 ROM for my TP and Love it! However, I have lost the ability to sync my subscription music from Napster. The device doesn't even show up in the Napster software when connected to Activesync. I have searched everywhere but have found no solution. All other functions seem to be fine. It will show up in Windows Media Player and will sync non-DRM music just fine. Do any Chefs or devs out there have any ideas?
I am a paying Napster to Go subscriber so, I'm not trying to do anything illegal just want to be able to sync my subscription music.
Thanks in advance!!
The only media players that ive seen that can synchronise with WM6 Devices are Windows Media Player, Winamp and Songbird.. if you really want to sync music to your device easily then stick to Windows Media Player or Songbird.
I can sync with Windows Media Player, just not DRM'd tracks from Napster or any other DRM'd files. It was all working very well under WM6.5 on Juicy7 ROM. Thats why I believe it's something in the DRM. I have never heard of Songbird but I see that it supports WMDRM so, I'll give it a try and report back.
Edit: Can't sync with Songbird. Doesn't recognize the device. I wonder if it could be a MTP issue? Might be unlikely though because windows media player sees the device just fine.
FWIW I can sync my DRM'd subscription zune music to my Omnia using Windows Media Player. Not sure what type of DRM Napster uses, but I thought WM5/6 devices were "Play4Sure" compliant....
They are. I was able to sync with windows media player on all of the earlier (prior to Juicy8) builds and on pretty much every other ROM I have tried. But Juicy8 is so darn goood I cant bring myself to part ways with it. Now it's like a quest or sommething, to resolve the issue. Are you GSM or CDMA?
CDMA -Verizon Wireless Omnia i910. There a couple quirks, like if I sync an album to the phone, then flash a new ROM, it won't play. I can't just re-sync, I get this "no sync rights" error in Windows Media Player. To get around this, I have to delete the album from the library on the PC and re-download it from Zune to sync it again.
For that issue, have you tried deleting the WMDRM folder on your storage card or wherever you store your music? When I could connect after a flash I would delete that folder and then remove the sync relationship in Windows Media Player. Create a new sync partnership in WMP and then re-sync. WMP should re-download your Sync rights. At least that would work on the Touch Pro and Napster.
Other files you may need to delete: (they will be recreated upon sync)
Application Data\Microsoft\Media Player\XMEMediaLibrary.mlb
Storage Card\MSMETADATA\XMEMediaLibrary.mlb
As always YMMV...
I've just tried dumping a stock diamond rom and then re-cooking it unchanged using ervius' latest kitchen (as I was planing to slowly upgrade the SYS/XIP and packages to try and see when it stopped working) and it doesn't work straight away.
Interestingly it looks like the Juicy 8 roms are also built using a PlatformRebuilder based kitchen.

I sent a PM to Bepe and am waiting for a reply. I was reading his thread and there was talk about just leaving out some files "not needed" to run a ROM. I wonder if there is something needed that just got "left out"?

Music Syncing Is HORRID!

This is a MAJOR problem and if they want to avoid people returning their phones within 30 days, this needs to be fixed. If someone is coming from iPhone, they will be totally lost on how to get music to their phone. In reality, it would be via XBOX Music but the entire experience is horrid and let me explain:
No Real Way To Sync - Yes, you can use Windows Media Player but it will not sync ZunePass/XBOX Music Pass songs.
Album Art - Spotty at best if you use the Windows Phone app to transfer music. If you download straight your phone, it seems to be OK
XBOX Music Cloud - What a mess! What is this info anyway? It isn't like Google Music and all of our music. It seems to be metadata from the main PC or Zune Software. I'd love to sync playlists and music between my devices but this thing is an absolute mess. Right now, I have this turned off on my devices.
Playlist Creation - Not only can't we sync our playlists from our PC (Zune Playlists) but you can't create one on the phone. And I once tried to create a playlist (streaming) so it would sync between my devices and it never showed up. Just the aforementioned mess in the music cloud shows up.
Delete Music Off Of Phone - Is it me or is there no way to remove music off the phone from the phone itself?
This is not a gripe session but legimtate broken things that need to get fixed. At the VERY least, get a fix for Windows Media Player so it can sync ZunePass songs!

I just discovered the DESKTOP version of the phone software...not perfect but MILES better...
I don't want to throw this thread off track, but I have GB upon GB of music in flac and mp4 music. Stuff not purchased on Xbox or other, by and large it's ripped from my disk collection. Does all that sync if I put it on my Win8 desktop AND play properly? Oh, I have some ogg stuff too... was deciding on what format to store my music in
Thanks!

You can add mp3 files from any location and they will play properly. You can also search for he album art but I do agree that the new metro software is nothing on Zune. Zune was the best media software ever!

There is also a glitch. You cannot download music to your phone when it is already in your "Cloud collection". So I'm stuck with streaming everything for now....

you can download cloud music, longpress on it and select download, also when you are in a song list, there is the first option for multiselect at the bottom, you can then check whatever you want and download it all at once.

to delete music off the phone longpress the song (or use the multiselect button and check songs, keep in mind, the multiselect icon only shows up in song view) and then choose delete or the trash can.
i agree the software needs to improve a lot, i'm quite surprised that it was released in a state that isn't even at parity with the zune software. it does seem like they are trying to push people away from using sync software and more into using cloud services to do it all though, but they need to work on UX a bit more before that is going to be simple for new users.
Since I have two laptops and a surface with the same music. Each day i am seeing music show up on phone. Since I don't have either one up for very long I think it will take awhile. I may just have to turn off standby this weekend and let it sync.
I got the lumia 920, and I love it. However, the music sync is SO bad I am considering bringing it back and using my lumia 900 agian. Its absolutely awful. There is no way to rate music, no auto playlists, and about 97% of the time I try to sync music using the godawful windows phone desktop application it hangs trying to remove music. The only way to keep the process going properly is keeping my phone screen awake, awesome.
I am a long time zune user, which I beleive to be the best music device and desktop software made, and I cannot believe that instead of just changing the name of the zune software they ditched it altogether, and all functionality with it.

cannot agree more with you. Let's hope they change it for the better.
The Windows Phone 8 desktop app does NOT work at all on my HP laptop running Windows 7 x64. Every time I plug my phone in, an error message pops up on my laptop screen saying, "Windows Phone has stopped working". It gives me the option to, "Check online for a solution and close the program" - that does NOTHING! If I click on that, it seems to be searching for a bit, then just goes away by itself, never offering me a solution to the problem.
The only way I can put music on my phone is to drag-and-drop through Windows Explorer, and THAT'S a disaster, too! Let's say I have 2 CD's/albums from The Airborne Toxic Event; 1 shows up on the phone listed (under Artists) as "The Airborne Toxic Event". The other shows up as "Airborne Toxic Event, The", EVEN THOUGH THE ID TAG INFO IS ALL CORRECT!! I'd say 80% of the artists I added to my phone last night (about 50 total) refuse to download any artist background image; the background is just gray. Also, even though I added album art for EACH album as I put them on the phone, some refuse to display album art. Others show it O.K. One track, that is playing fine tonight, the phone told me last night, "Windows Phone cannot play this file type (the file is in WMA format)!!!!
This is a COMPLETE DISASTER, and I'm probably taking my Lumia 920 back to AT&T this weekend for a refund.
Oh, yeah, my previous phone, which I still have, is a Samsung Galaxy S III Android phone, and NONE of the music playing software on that phone had any problem playing the EXACT SAME music files I tranferred to my WP8 handset, and My Samsung Focus & Focus S WP7.5 hansets also had NO problem with these same music files!
Rename the Zune software and bring it back so we can use it with WP8 handsets, PLEASE!!!
What an EPIC fail!!!

The windows phone application for windows works the first time it syncs, then it hangs on every subsequent sync unless I remove all the music from the device and start over. It hangs while trying to delete music. Awful.

Windows Media Player may work fine for getting music on the phone (drag-and-drop works just as well, too), but it's what the Xbox music service does to the songs AFTER they're on the phone that causes the bigger problems, at least for me. It removes metadata (tag info) and replaces it with what it thinks is correct, causing some of my albums/CD's to be split into two separate albums/CD's. For example, I put (4) tracks from Beyonce's "B'day [Deluxe Edition] [Disc 1]" on my phone. Xbox music service split (2) of those tracks into a separate CD titled "B'day [Deluxe Edition] Disc 1", that shows NO album art! It did the same to "Yourself or Someone Like You", by Mathchbox Twenty - it split (1) track off into a separate "Yourself or Someone Like You" CD by Matchbox 20 (it changed the artist from Matchbox Twenty to Matchbox 20 for just this one track)! I have a CD by Ned's Atomic Dustbin for the single of "Not Sleeping Around"; I verify that, after I copy it over to the phone, it is displaying album art - within 15 minutes, the album art disappears! I've tried setting the music files to "read-only" before copying, but that somehow gets changed when being copied over to the phone, and the "read-only" option, when viewing the file properties on the phone, is grayed out.
I also frequently get an error message when trying to play songs on the phone that says, "Sorry, we can't play this type of file on your phone", even though the file is either in .mp3 or .wma format & it STARTS PLAYING BY ITSELF!!
WTF?!! Why did Microsoft scew this up SO bad?!! WP7/7.5 handled all this flawlessly! I'm seriously considering returning my Nokia Lumia 920 to AT&T over this specific issue!

I can't get WMP11 recognize my 920 as a device to sync.
But the Windows Phone Software works fine on Windows 7.
I think i am going up to Windows 8 Pro right after i got my SSD. Because the SDK doesn't work on Windows 7 either.
BTW: yep, sync music on Windows 7 for the WP8 is a little bit troublesome. There are far more less convenient than the Zune Software.
I dont know how it works on Windows 8 yet.
I too am amazed at how bad the software for PC actually is, I have no need for cloud storage so that isn't an issue but album art has been replaced on most songs by Xbox music and the desktop client which I am sure is a Beta is next to useless, I am using Win7x64 so maybe an upgrade to win8 will help?
I managed to finally drag & drop my music to the device which did do the trick, And am kind of happy that option was available, I preferred the Zune client to be honest for stability and ease of use and hope they can soon sort things out so they are a bit more stable.,
I guess the lesson to be learnt here is not to rush out and buy on first release, Looking back on WP7 when you compare the first release to Mango that should have been warning enough, No doubt there are nerds somewhere in MS working their asses off to fix this  Yeah right.......

...and there's no way to edit the metadata manually like in the Zune software. Really pissing me off.

Windows Media Center in Windows 10

Just wondering if there is any interest/possibility of developing a method of running WMC in Windows 10. There really is no alternative for a total media center package that DVRs copy-protected content from a Cable-Card tuner.
There was some interest in it on MyDigitalLife forum (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/th...on-Windows-10-final-amp-possible-alternatives), but that seems to have fizzled.
Waiting and hoping and NOT upgrading to 10 unless there is a solution.
Thanks!
Mike
I am also very interested in this myself. Build of Windows 10 by build of Windows 10, I have been capturing the packages for Windows Media Center with "Aunty Mel's Cheap And Nasty SxS Package Extractor" into cab files, now if I try to run these using the Dism.exe tool, it gives me a version mismatch error that wont allow me to install them.
Now is there a way to force or HACK these packages to be installed on current builds ? If so, we might just need the eshell.exe patched to skip the kernel check and we should be able to get it running. The otherside of it is, guide data, Playready and the other components for WMC, the old Media player is in Windows 10, so the media libraries in WMC should work fine.
If you think you MIGHT be able to do it or want to try and would like access to one of these that I captured, hit me up via PM and I will share a folder so you can access it. I don't want to publicly post them due to MS possible reading this forum.
Any thoughts that could actually make this happen ?
I don't have any hacking skills, but I'd definitely be very interested.

never mind. misread
Agreed
I too would love to see a solution for this. I use WMC for linking my Xbox and other streaming devices to my computer, and it's also a great media player. I know there was an upgrade for windows 8 and 8.1 that was a separate package that allowed users to install Windows Media Center after installing windows, as it didn't come with it by default. It installed like a regular program, and WMC was up and running after a restart. Maybe they'll have an update like this for Windows 10?
Though upon its initial release, here's what Microsoft had to say on the matter:
quoted from here as well as other microsoft official sites...
"A number of commenters are reporting that the Windows 10 upgrade tool does warn you that you're about to lose Windows Media Center. Microsoft doesn't exactly hide the fact that Windows 10 forcibly deprecates Media Center, but the information isn't in the most obvious of locations either. If you visit the Windows 10 upgrade website, and then click the "Windows 10 specifications" link in the small print at the bottom of the page, there's a big list of deprecated features. Media Center is the main one, but you'll be dismayed to hear that Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Hearts have also been removed. Now, the good news: if your computer had Media Center before the upgrade (most versions of Windows 7, or Windows 8/8.1 with Media Center), you will be credited with a free copy of Windows DVD Player. In practice, this means that most people upgrading from Windows 7 will have access to the Windows DVD Player app for free, while most Windows 8 upgraders won't. Likewise, if you bought a full Windows 10 Home or Pro licence, or a new Windows 10 computer, you won't be eligible to download the DVD Player app for free."
So basically, the WMC replacement costs $15 and ONLY plays DVDs. And unless you're upgrading from a previous version of windows that had WMC on it, you have to pay the $15 for the DVD Player app (It's FREE and included otherwise). I personally have nothing good to say about the DVD app, it's bland and useless compared to other DVD player applications with more features and a smaller pricetag.
Bring back Media Center!!
Looks like over at MDL they got it running, No live TV or recorded shows yet but, they got WMC running on Windows 10, it's a step in the right direction....
http://forums.mydigitallife.info/th...on-Windows-10-final-amp-possible-alternatives
Nice! I will be very happy if they figure this out.
I would love an option to stream content from my Win10 PC to my XBOX 360. I had done this with Wun7/Win8, but WMC was getting so tough to work with that I stopped using it. When it worked I loved it, but I had so many issues with WMC on Win8 that I am not sure it can be a reliable tool on Win10.

We're talking about Media Center, not Player. Media Player already comes with Windows 10 and doesn't have to be installed. It's just not the default app for opening media any more.
MDL forum got it working: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/th...n-Windows-10-final-amp-possible-alternatives/
