ROM Speed Test - CM7 variants on G1 / Dream - G1 General

Searched for this, and found CM6 speed test results, but none for CM7 and if the kernels are different, options can be different, so results can be different.
I've tried various ROMs since CM dropped official G1 support, and they're all very similar, but I needed somewhere to document the settings that work best for me.
I only use Quadrant for my benchmarking. I feel it's well-rounded in its tests, it's free, and I get a seemingly completely arbitrary number at the end.
The best Quadrant score I can recall getting was 373, although I can't help but think I once got in the low 400s. I do remember trying every trick I could to get it into the low 300s, but I'm consistently getting 360's and peaking at low 370s with the current setup.
I'm currently running FireRat's CM7 Magpie, version 2011-09-26, which is only one version behind his latest as of this posting. I am running ADW Launcher as downloaded from market (because I like how its menu entries are arranged better -- that's the only reason). I have only 2 screens, and really don't even need that many.
Performance Settings Adjustments:
MENU / SETTINGS / CYANOGENMOD SETTINGS /
Code:
PERFORMANCE
CPU
ONDEMAND, 176, 614, Restore on boot=Yes
Compcache - 18% (Default)
NO JIT
NO DITHERING
YES PURGING OF ASSETS
NO MEMORY LOCKS
VM Heap=24m (default?)
My Micro-SD is a class 4, 4GB. Partitioned [*FAT32][~350M Ext4][64M Swap]
and I'm not using the swap partition AFAIK.
Non-performance settings adjustments:
(Really, I doubt any of these have much effect if any at all on performance)
Code:
Menu/Settings
CyanogenMod Settings
Application
*All left at defaults
Display
All unchecked except 0 and 90 degrees rotations
Input
Only change was long-press home, set to show 12 screens.
Interface
Edited my power widget to my liking. Doubt it has any effect on speed.
Status Bar Tweaks
Checked: All except Status Bar Brightness.
AM/PM set to small, Alternate Signal left at default (bars)
*Everything else in "Interface" left at defaults.
Lockscreen
Disable - unchecked
Style Options - Ring, Ring, Custom App Starter, added Camera, default background
Widget Options
Always display battery
Centered
No to the Music
Next Calendar (doesn't seem to work)
--All Calendars selected
--Reminders-Only not checked.
--Lookahead 3 days.
Unlock options -- All left at defaults (all unchecked)
No to the Gestures.
Finally, in MENU/Settings/Applications/Preferred Install Location, SD EXT is selected. In Applications/Development, USB Debugging is on (disabling it did not speed things up any) and stop-via-long-press is disabled (probably no effect).
I *am* running a theme, but since a theme is mainly just picture swaps (I think?) it shouldn't affect much. I'm running GlassMix. Not the coolest, but not bad at all. I rather like it.

Feel free to reply with your best quadrant score and settings that got it -- preferably on the same ROM but other CM7-based ROMs would be welcome comparisons...

The first ,i learn,thanks

Getting a quadrant score of 393 with 2.3.5 GRP CM7, overclock to 614 MHz, purging of assets on, and the disabling verify-bytecode hack. Fastest I have seen on a g1! I get 369 with normal CPU clock.

Might have to try this ROM out. When it first showed up, it seemed to be little more than a compilation direct from CM7 and AOSP sources, which of course anyone who can follow a HOWTO can do themselves... and many have. Back then, I felt this guy was just one more of those guys. I wasn't convinced he really had any developing experience before starting with it, and I really wasn't impressed with him personally, based on comments he made in several threads -- particularly against a known (if sometimes disliked) developer who has contributed a decent amount to the community. I'll have to go back and see what all has been done recently in this ROM if its performance is consistently good enough that the hack you mentioned worked so well (it made no difference on the CM7-Magpie I'm running).
EDIT: Nevermind, turns out I didn't know who I was talking about.. actually, I did know who I was talking about, it just turned out he was someone other than the person who actually started GRP so nevermind all this (read next two posts)...

The guy who made that rom was jbirdvegas, before he made it to the cyanogenmod team. If he made it into cyanogenmod team, he must have known what he was doing.

Oh, okay, then forget my last statement cus I was under the impression it was someone else entirely... maybe someone was going to make their own and started with GRP as a base... but the way I read this guy's posts, it looked like _he_ started GRP. Thanks for the clarification (I probably could have found this out if I had taken time to research the ROM, come to think of it... () )

i get 360s too

Its ok, i know why, you must think dw9906 made the rom, but he was just building the rom and posting it here because jbird gave him consent to do so since he was going to be unable to continue the rom since he was accepted to the CyanogenMod team. I'm not sure if he started GRP by himself, I think it was a couple of people who started it.
Also, i have one question for you, which rom FEELS faster for you, Cyanogenmod 7 Magpie, or ADS Magpie?
I noticed you used to run ADS Magpie and are now running CM 7 Magpie, and I'm just curious to know why.

Good info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Uhm, honestly, they do FEEL about the same, which is why speed isn't the biggest concern for me. BOTH of them get laggy at times, and by laggy I mean two things
1) Sometimes scrolling through my apps drawer is blocky (not smooth).
2) Sometimes apps take a while to open, or, simply to do things.
Usually, 1) happens more frequently, but it doesn't bother me as my phone's doing a LOT of things.
2) However, doesn't happen that often on either ROM. However, when it happens, it's always after I've been running several different programs, especially maps with GPS enabled.
Usually, I have most of my phone turned off, so GPS, 3G, rotation, none of that comes into play in the list of things my phone is doing. If I had them running all the time, I'd be on FroYo or Eclair, not Gingerbread. The phone couldn't handle it. Or, I couldn't handle the phone.
In the end, the two are largely the same for me. The main reason I chose Firerat's over And DiSa's is that the Firerat ROM has CPU government built-in, where I have to have a CPU setting utility with ADS. Also, there was some thing or two else that Firerat/CM7 have built-in that ADS/ezGingerbread do not. Maybe the sound equalizer? Not that I run that too often, but it's nice to have.
EDIT: And you're right, I thought it was DW. Plus, you explained there why it must have seemed that DW just picked up someone else's work... he did! but I know now why, and I was missing that info before, so thanks again... Still didn't care for the interaction 'tween him and Firerat but that was something else (and yeah, FR isn't the easiest to get along with but I tend to let peoples' personalities just kinda slide -- usually -- especially in a text forum where tonal variations aren't heard ).

Damn, 311 using froyoByLaszlo

the g1 is a phone. and a music player. talk about this.

hey i know the whole OMG APPS2SD WE HAVE ROOT thing is big around here. but i dont have use for apps2sd at all. i have 14 apps and i change firmware like 9001 times a day when something new comes out. but i have 2gigs of OGG music files. and every firmware i have used ends up bugging out when im playing music and i get a notifacation with the usb headphone adapter connected. could we get a firmware optimized for music and enjoying it instead of showing off our rooted phones with no real use behind it. redirect this post if you need to. i know the whole "WRONG FORUM TOPIC LOCKED" thing happens alot here.
you can try the getting the EQ mod or the Max volume mod as well
would there be any use in me attempting to set up the sdk and pulling an all nighter to learn how to make my own NON BLEEDING EDGE but very stable release? cuz i would love to just have a stable phone with every volume thing and EQ pre installed. and that pesky sound service bug, dats gotta get fixed.

has preinstalled max volume, also a selection of the roms
You don't need the sdk to use the audio mods. Read a little bit more, and you will discover that you can use lucidrem's script to download the the audio mods without a pc. It takes a little patience, some time, and using the terminal. But it is easy if you follow the instructions. Also the developer of the audio mods also has several custom roms with the mods built in.
Edit. If you want a stable Rom use jf1.51, thedudes 1.2b you can add the audio mod on top of the using the bat files that comes with the audio mods
i'll try out *** - JF1.51 CRB43 US with V2 then. im used to using the terminal, its not a problem to mod my own, but being able to just quickly flash my phone back is too tempting. and @ubernicholi, i was meaning the sdk to build my own firmware as a whole. i assume its going to take me a while to understand why this whole multiple firmware bidness is a good thing, when its basicly taking all the newest unsupported code from the tree, and applying it and modifying it for the Dream handset, and in doing so, giving it 3rd party support. like downloading windows xp black pirate edition on TPB, to me its useless. ahhh the beauty of open source ^__^
why not go back to stock? it's not bleeding edge and it'll play your music just fine.
theres no shame in that.
wait. no, no...there is shame. terrible, terrible amounts of shame.
yea, but then i cant use debian. which is pretty cool so far.

lol I apologize I couldn't resist. So if a music centric build is what you are looking for, then it would be possible to strip out a lot of unnecessary features. First off, I think Google sync which is constantly running in the background can be taken out. Applications that are constantly refreshing, such as Mail can be removed. I understand you have apps to SD currently installed. Try internalizing the Music.apk, moving it back into the faster more reliable internal memory. Moreover, a good place to start I believe would be with the Google Ion build, which is lightning fast.
if i knew how to do that, i would slim down a stock JF update.
I think you should start out by flashing to Google Ion. Then, using ADB on your computer, enter ADB shell and being to manually remove the unnecessary applications. Whatever you don't need, take it out. As for Google sync, go to settings and disable it. Also in settings, disable notifications. At a point, you can even just turn off the radio and switch to airplane mode. That way no other services are running and you can listen to music uninterrupted, at the cost of not being able to accept calls.
wow, thanks for the support. i was looking at ION and thinking that it would be perfect. but im not really sure how to set up the development on fedora 11.

Ion FTW.
You set it up the same as you do on any other distro...
and...
what do you honestly do with debian on your phone?
As in on your computer? Are you running Linux or any operating system based on Linux? If so, unfortunately I can't help you there, I mostly use Windows and occasionally Wubi ):
(In all honesty I have very little knowledge when it comes to running Linux on a computer, so sorry about that haha)
I forgot to add, maybe increase your processor clock speed to 528Mhz. Look for an app called SetCPU. It is here on the forums for free, as the creator is among us or alternatively download it from the market, however it is a paid app on their.
if u use ion use R1 its faster than R2 in my opinion
i use um that overclock widget, i love that thing, works so well. umm. debian on my phone is pretty cool. it has potential. umm i might set this up and get a small release with just my name and roadmap on it.

Hmm.. looking at your signature, overclocking your PC, and even getting Debian to work in the first place, I think you are definitely capable and very experienced. Best of luck to you
Let us know if you are able to get that stripped down version of Google Ion working. I would do it, but I don't know how to resign updates and I just finally settled down on Haykuro 6.0.1 after a ROM struggle between JAC's Hero, TwistedUmbrella's Hero and JF1.51 where I was flashing a new ROM on a daily basis.
my only thing is my work ethic and lack of programming experiance. if anyone could help me get started. hell, i might actually post something in the android development outlining the project goals and stuff like that.

[ROM][BETA] EnergyExpressoXDA v2.2.1.0.022 12-11 (Sense 2.2,Smartass,Cache2cache)

This ROM is rather incomplete as it is part of a project to backport parts of other HTC Sense 2.2 (Froyo) MDPI ROMs in ordr to have an HTC based Froyo ROM for Eris. Unlike the CyanogenMOD ports which have provided versions for models of their Froyo ROMs which were much easier to work on the Eris and have had 5+ months of painstaking work where this is only on its first month.
I'm just trying to get the optimization aspects done while others get full hardware functionality working, although I may join them soon. So what works? Allot actually. What doesn't? Thanks to Tazz, Tenzo, Conap & Decadance not much (BT audio, camera and WIFI hotspot).
It is fully themed using a combination of contributions providing a clean and somewhat unique Expresso look as well as many common performance tweaks which, to me, have provided a smoother, less choppy feel when interacting with the UI when compared to its parent ROMs.
Please note that portions of this ROM fall under the GPL, Apache and BSD licences. You may find the details of these licences here.
Since I rarely use the camera and never used BT audio I am currently using this as my day to day ROM. That does not mean it provides me a full experience. It is still very bleeding edge.
Features
Fully Expresso Based Themed
Additional Eye Candy
Official Google Reader
OI File Manager (Open Source, Apache License)
No BT Audio, Camera or Wifi Hotspot
Speed Optimizations
All HTC Goodies
Cache2cache (over 100MB additional app space)
Smartass CPU Scheduler (less voltage, automatic sleep cap, etc...)
CPU overclocking & underclocking provided by the feature above
HTC Marketplace in addition to Market
DroidX Boot Screen
No lame rainbow spotted default BG
etc...
New in this Release
Put all stock HTC apps back
Improved stability (less random FCs)
Removed OI Notepad since HTC Notepad works just fine
Added 3D gallery in addition to 2D gallery
Added Car Home (not tested)
etc...

NOTE:
Before releasing more updates I am moving my efforts towards helping Tazz & Tenzo with core functionality and take what I can for that and help Kaos with Gingerbread. Once all core functionality is in place for this ROM's parent ROMs I will get this going as a serious ROM with the same focus it has now. So development on this ROM is still 100% active but it is gonna take a bit before you see a new release.

I'm getting the same thing.
I'm getting installation aborted when I try to install it. I did a complete wipe and boot in recovery.
I tired re signing the .zip file I downloaded and even that wouldn't work. I opened it in winRAR just to check and I get a break operation where it says unexpected end of archive and it says there are 0 bytes of data. Properties says its 120MB but I don't have a checksum to verify that the file is intact. It seems whatever was uploaded has been corrupted.
The archive is corrupt. Please re-upload it.

Ditto here.
I downloaded it late last night and it took FOREVER! I see he updated the link... Anyhoo. I was able to get it to install and it seemed pretty smooth/stable. I saw a couple FCs.. one in particular was in Settings > Network > Mobile Net options. Each time I tried to get into that setting page, it would FC. I also tried to get Facebook from the Market and it would never download.
I like the new sense ui though! it looks really clean. I've not sampled Tazz's or Tenzo's yet.
No LWPs worked for me.
Switching back to XTRSense for now.
Keep up the work!

existz for the kernel
This ROM has been tested by me for several days now and works awesome from my testing.
Installation:
Copy the zip to your sdcard, reboot into recovery, and flash! The updater script should take care of all needed wiping, so unless you have a lagfix that isn't supported by SuckerPunch, you shouldn't have to do anything but flash. If you're on a stock ROM with 3e recovery, please read this.
Note: I'm not sure if the lagfix and tweaks are enabled by default, so after installing go into recovery and check. If they're not, enable the recommended tweaks and enable the lagfix if so desired! If you're coming from stock let me know what happens so I can update this section.
Also, if you experience charge death please read the kernel thread.
Warning: Just like every other ROM, you flash at your own risk. If my ROM somehow blows up your phone, makes your phone do a flying dragon kick to your face, or makes your girlfriend leave you for me, I will not be held responsible.

by the way I should disable voodoo first before flashing if im coming from cognition correct?

I find battery life to be similar to just about every other ROM out there. The most important factor in battery life is the kernel, and when undervolted SuckerPunch is fantastic on the battery. From what I can tell 30+ hours should be possible with moderate usage.
I'm a battery life whore, so I personally do not overclock unless I need it for a specific app (Like a PSX emulator for example). My 1000MHz UV settings from low to high are as follows:
-150,-150,-150,-125,-125 - I haven't experienced a crash yet with these settings, but remember that every phone is different and what works for me may not work for you.
I'm not aware of any bugs, but let me know if you find any! I'm not amazing like MikeyMike01, designgears, the Phoenix/Firefly team, the Andromeda team or many others, but I'll do my best. There shouldn't be any bugs that aren't present in the stock ROM, but it's possible I messed something up.
Not really sure on any other random information, but you might want to consider using APN Backup and Restore to backup your APN's, just in case my list doesn't work for you for whatever reason.

Just LauncherPro and the background. Nothing else is changed from the stock ROM. If there's interest I can definitely post up the wallpaper.
It's all good. Just wanted to know.
I've got a Rogers Captivate and I live in Calgary, so I should be good.
I'm giving it a go so I'll let you know.
And with the Voltage Control, when it crashes the phone is still on and can receive messages and stuff but the power button doesn't turn the screen on right? It's happened to me a couple times on other roms and I'm just trying to figure out if it because of bad settings I have.

That's one way for it to crash, yeah. The most common way though is for it to hard-lock during use, ending up with you having to pull the battery to reboot.
How is this Canadian? ie how does it differ from the americanized versions? What was not changed to keep it canadian?
I support all your hard work and I'm looking forward to a canadian version but it just looks like rogers rom minus samsung/rogers bloat with a new kernel +APN backup and restore +a few apps...
unless I'm missing something

That's basically what it is, plus the battery mod, a few settings tweaks, as well as a better kernel and modem. What makes it Canadian is the Rogers ROM itself. The other Rogers ROMs here are Americanized, whereas mine is not.
The Locale is English (Canada) rather than English (US), and the stock keyboard has Canadian spellings of words as well as the American ones (though if the Canadian spellings are removed from the other ROMs I do not know). The default time and date format is also day/month/year, rather than month/day/year.
There aren't a ton of differences between my ROM and say Cognition 3.04, but I spent a lot of time tweaking the stock ROM to my liking, and even longer packaging it into something installable, because I figure there's other people out there who would like it as well. If a single person uses my ROM and likes it, I'm happy with that.
good job mate. I will try this weekend.
GPS should be okay as well I presume.
Great Canadian ROM, EH?! I will try this out tonight. Yes, great to have Canadian locale built into Rogers Froyo. Thx.

From my testing, GPS seems to work fine. I can get a lock in my basement even, if I try really hard.

Holy crap! You have to be running a GPS extension through a window or something. I can't even do that! Great job though. I may adjust the locale and play with this for the heck of it.
Have you changed any of the GPS files in this ROM?
I assuming from your original post that all you did was trim fat and left the Rogers stock in check? If so I'll definitely install this.
If haven't already, ive been using the combo of:
- Stock Rogers 2.2 ROM
- SuckerPunch (or SpeedMod) Kernel
- KP1 Modem
Quite honestly i've had better results than with the JK4 to me in terms of GPS. Instant locks and tracking in Toronto. As long as you leave the Rogers stock ROM unchanged and don't use the "GPS fixes" to alter it.
The only features i really think need to be added to the stock Rogers ROM are the Gingerbread Keyboard (which gives you voice input that doesn't come stock ), an accurate battery mod and the extended power menu (to give you the reboot features).
Anyway, if you feel like trying it out for the next version of this ROM I highly recommend it.

The updater script should take care of all needed wiping, so unless you have a lagfix that isn't supported by SuckerPunch, you shouldn't have to do anything but flash.

Does that mean the script is going to WIPE my internal SD?
I plan to flash this without wiping my internal SD because it's got pictures and lots of other ROMs and tweak zips and such and I am at work and do NOT want to backup my entire SD...
Please clarify, and thanks!

Haha yeah, I honestly don't know how I did it, but it happened! I tested the GPS outside today and got 9 satellites in about 9 seconds.

No it won't wipe your internal SD. It only wipes your System/Data/Datadata/Cache, and a couple other things like all other ROMs.

EDIT:Some macs/VM's dont like mounting 3.5 roms/or at very least the screen doesn't stay on when they are mounted, go to display settings and set the display timeout value to 15 mins (most file xfers don't exceed that length IMO) once the file xfer is done you can eject and unplug and your screen will turn on. This is a Mac issue nd I built the update on the Mac using a Linux VM so I know your issue, its easily avoided by just adding more or no (If you can handle it) display timer ...try mounting/unmounting your sd card if you get a ? at the music player. Its an issue that doesn't really pose as one as I've only had to unmount/mount a couple of times in the extensive amount of testing i did. Also, using parallels VM and sharing your sd card with it, Id suggest you turn the "never off/15 minutes" option on to your display time out value if you want to be able to see it...I don't make mac products or VM's and im not looking to tailor our roms to their bugs...and lastly, well i fogot the lastly part because there arent many issues in this rom, its mean clean and lean!
And yes I know I posted the same answer 3x people are still gonna ask questions....

Backing up and flashing now. I'm currently on the latest infected eternity 3.5 rom, and i'm about to do a clean wipe and install.
let us know how this compares in speed/performance to the infected rom if you'd be so kind. Im just curious to see how the different 3.5 bases perform...
How is the LTE speed? I've been staying away from ETERNITY due to the slow LTE speeds. I've been using the stock sense rom, XDABOLT 1.7 and happy with it because everything works including the fast LTE speed I should be getting.
I'm still downloading this just to have it.

Speed seems fine here. About 14Mb down and 8Mb up. I do notice the rom occasionally lags when opening apps. Not sure what to do about it, but other than that it's pretty smooth.

Just because this is 3.5 base does not mean it is like eternity. I got my usual 26mbps down in downtown chi with 6 megs up. Tbh I never noticed much of a blow in LTE speeds with eternity either though (though I never kept it on my phone for longer than a few hours...)
Here is one i did on the south side (closer to indiana, the downtown service is faster....)
Some first impressions:
-Much faster than latest eternity rom, looks good too
-I like how the google music icon has the blue tint now instead of the old orange
-awesome boot animation (galaxy nexus i think)
-texts send super fast, muuuch faster than eternity rom, which itself was faster than stock htc i think
Bugs/needs improvement/suggestions:
-On the lockscreen, the messages and mail apps each have a little icon in the bottom right corner that shows you how many unread messages you have. On eternity this icon was a nice little green circle. On this rom, however, they are ugly white squares, which not only looks bad but also makes it hard to see the number of messages, which is written in white font with a little bit off an embossed shadow. So if that could be changed to something like little blue or green circles, that would be nice. Anything but white boxes
-This is personal preference, but I like the default android loading symbol, the spinning line, not exactly sure how to describe it. It's a spinning grey curve, not filled in. This new rom uses a similar icon, it's a grey and white circle with a spinning chord (radius), almost like a colorless beach ball on a mac. If I had the option, i would go back to the default icon as described above (it's very similar to the windows 7 loading icon, except not blue. But it could be blue if you want)
-I love the CRT screen-on/off animations, which i'm sure you know what i'm talking about. Eternity rom has them. This rom doesn't have em. If you could enable a toggle in the display settings for this then that would be awesome! Believe it or not, this is one of the major features i expect and love in a good gingerbread rom!
-On the factory stock htc rom and the eternity rom, in the location settings, i could check 3 different boxes:
-Verizon Wireless Location Services (i think uses cellular network)
-Google Location Services (i think uses data connection)
-GPS (hardware)
In this rom, I only have one box, which is for GPS. Once i have GPS enabled, it does allow me to go into the setting above it (labeled "Location Setting") and enable some kind of network-based location services. So if you know what I'm talking about and can give the 3-box option, that would be awesome and greatly appreciated (normally i like to keep just the google location services box checked).
-On the eternity rom, when you go into "Personalize" (either from settings or from hitting the menu button when you're at your home screen, you can change the apps that are displayed on the default "4-app + ring" lockscreen, as well as their positions. In this rom, you can't do either; in fact, there's no option to adjust the lockscreen at all i think.
If I remember later, I'll update this post with my LTE speeds, right now i'm on wifi.
Let me know which of these issues you do or don't understand, and which you think you'll be able to fix. Thanks for all your hard work, congrats on being the newest member of team liquid! We're expecting great things from you, and this rom is a great start! Definitely my new personal rom
Michael
Most of your issues are feature requests, this is not eternity rom, its also not 400+mbs if you want a LOAD OF FEATURES then go for synergy, liquid is about minimalism, speed without sacrificing any integral feature sets (and we still leave our touch on it.) Feel free to mod any of the cosmetics to your needs. I have no issue reading the number of texts I have in my "white boxes" nor do they look ugly to me...and you can register with network GPS as well as stand alone GPS...it locks fine, I have yet to find any innaccuracy/shortcomings with any location based services, if you find them please let us know glad you enjoy the speed of this from if you aren't in stsh mode 3 zram enable then do it. And dude, go to personalize lock screen shortcuts, its there as usual please before you post a "bug" double check to make sure you looked through the settings, we work hard on our roms and before quickly reviewing it, please take time to get to know it, OC and zram it and reboot it ans let it settle. Enjoy!

Fair enough, I can appreciate a minimalism-focused rom! And hence I can definitely understand the large difference between the two roms. The things i mentioned were minor and wouldn't increase the file size by much, but if you want to keep it as lean as possible then by all means.
I would definitely mod the boxes into colored circles if i knew how, but i'm guessing you don't want to take the time to explain that to me, that's ok i understand.
I think I do understand what you're saying about the location services - you're referring to the top check box in location settings, "Use wireless networks" ? I originally had thought that only used wifi, but i see now that it uses cell signal. So thanks for pointing that out
I tried to do the zram thing to speed up the rom (i did experience a little lag, especially with the notification window sometimes not pulling down after many swipes), but i ran into the same issue as kasandoro. Then i saw your newest post and that fixed it for me (for those of you reading this, make sure that you don't capitalize the "z" in zram enable, because it won't be able to find it). So thanks for explaining that!
I apologize for missing the lockscreen adjustments screen, i forgot that it was in the 2nd tab in the personalize screen, i was just looking at the "home screen" tab and not the "display" tab. Thanks!
I'm pretty sure I gave you credit for your hard work in my first post, so no need to get huffy. I thought I had triple checked it, but I was just looking in the wrong place. But that's what forums are for, helping each other out!
Thanks again!

That did the trick! Unfortunately, it seems my phone can't handle 1.9. 1.5 seems to be its limit, so I had to back off. The zram tweak seems to have helped though.

Yup, running IX, and the phone freezes quite a bit and requires a battery pull (softkeys stop responding).
Just installed the ROM. Very smooth so far. Couple possible issues I noticed right away:
- Music players don't find my music files which are located in /mnt/sdcard/music
- Facebook for sense appears to be missing. Unable to sync contact pictures

No worries, and awesome, looking forward to it!
Note: After enabling zram i got 2 freezes, both times the device rebooted itself after a minute or two. I then went back into terminal emu disabled it. Had one more reboot since, but seems to be stable and awesome now.
EDIT: Froze again about a minute after posting. This time it actually froze in the middle of a keyboard press, with vibrate on keypress enabled, so it was sitting there frozen and vibrating for about a minute or two till it finally rebooted itself lol. Any insight as to why we might be experiencing reboots at this point?
EDIT 2: Another freeze+reboot...

I think I broke it.
Thoughts? Ideas?
Forgive me.
I thought folks were on 1.30.xxx or even higher by now.
And my battery life is pathetic.
And i keep getting notifications about having connected to my home network without ever leaving the house, I get good signal clear to my car.
Many things to love about HTC 10. A number of things... not so much.
I don't understand your problem. Looks like your phone has the most recent Verizon OTA already.
I swear, I thought I read that a 1.30.xxx was available.
You're right, it appears I have the latest from Verizon.
I thought the newer versions I must have imagined (or maybe other carriers released) would solve all my stock HTC 10 woes.
I sincerely apologize to the forum for my version oversight. I expected to have another OTA by now, restoring my confidence in my flagship phone's ability to function as one would expect.
Don't go by software version numbers for OTA's; the numbers are for internal control, not external tracking. Currently the Verizon 10 is on 1.19.605.22. The 605 means Verizon (Spring is 651). The Unlocked and I believe possibly the Sprint versions are at 1.80 or something. As a sometimes software and hardware tester for HTC I can assure you, the numbers don't mean anything. I see issues with my later test builds that I never see on my retail handset, and the OTA's don't come down until the carriers have approved them, long after HTC is done building and testing.

Every Verizon 10 owner, whether rooted or not, should go into Settings--> App Manager and DISABLE DTIgnite. It's nothing but a bloatware engine. Disable it, remove whatever bloatware you can (or disable it) and you will be rid of it. I disable: Verizon Cloud; Verizon Navigation; CallerID and DTIgnite. I confess, I prefer Messages+ over the default messaging app.

Already annihilated DTIgnite in every way I could find. Man, it was stubborn! I've disabled all Verizon apps except "My Verizon Mobile", instead stripping it of every permission.
I use Signal as my default messaging app, as recommended by Edward Snowden himself! lol
I literally ripped out every bit of software I don't use/need. The default mail app, Zoe, NFL Mobile, Visual Voicemail, all the Amazon apps, the list goes on. Battery has been so poor, however, I thought maybe I broke it.
I unplugged 40 minutes ago and i went from 100% to 94% in that time.
Any idea what app populates /data/system/dropbox ? i found files there logging practically all usage. i have since emptied the folder and changed its permissions so that "system" user no longer had access.
adding that my remedy seems to have worked, and no weird errors have presented themselves

Well, I'd like to actually use the phone, so I don't go quite so far. Zoe I keep active, My Verizon I keep to monitor data usage, Visual Voicemail is now free and actually useful; Amazon apps are definite battery sucks but can be tamed. I didn't to into the way you can fix permissions using App Manager....that was not the point of the earlier post. I'm relatively content with my battery life, but I also run a custom kernel.

I didn't know you could have a custom kernel on stock ROM.
I'm patiently waiting for CM13. A thread was created to promote its development http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3410009

Sure, why not? If you're bootloader unlocked and rooted, go for it. Elemental X 0.6 is the last version for the current retail firmware. The later version(s), I think it's up to 0.9, are for the 1.8x base. I wouldn't run it on Verizon until post whenever the OTA drops.

I lack a proper education of how the software actually works at that level in a *nix-like environment, especially Android.
I have intermediate experience with *nix. I've set up DHCP servers and Apache servers, SMB servers and proxy servers. I use CLI or GUI, on x86, x64, and RPi (arm). Rarely, if ever, have I required modifying the kernel of an installation. Not since compiling Gentoo completely from source 10 years ago.
I would benefit from a "for dummies" video when it comes to the many aspects of low-level Android customization.

Well, there are plenty of threads on XDA for that. Bottom line is that once the devices are unlockable, some developers like to cook ROMs, others like to do kernels, still others focus on recoveries. If you stick around long enough, you recognize developers who move from device to device the same way users will through time. The developer of Elemental X kernel, @flar2 is a long-time kernel developer who has done solid work in the past, so I have absolute faith in running his kernels on my handset. The Elite kernel developer, @buckmarble, is also a great kernel developer.
I wouldn't presume to write or code myself. The most I ever do is put things in or take them out of custom ROMs before flashing, but lately I have stuck with stock ROMs until devices are "end of life," (which is why I'm running a custom ROM on my One Max, and will soon probably have to flash a custom ROM to my Nexus 7 FHD). And now that you can run Xposed without modifying system, I can do many of the mods that custom ROMs do.
Well, that was easy.
Elemental X 0.06 has been installed.
I'll report back on battery in a little bit.
changing kernels had no effect on the battery drain. still discharging just as quickly.
