Sprints new network questions..... - Epic 4G General

After reading the announcement from this mornings strategy meeting I have a few questions bouncing around in my head. Was wondering if anyone here might know the answers. First, and most important, what happens to all the phones that are currently set for their 4g? Will they still work on the new network or is the change in band only for the 4g? I.e. if I were to buy a epic touch 4g would I still have 3g and the end of 2012 or would I have to buy another handset?
Secondly, wtf? Where did all the money go that I/we have been pouring into sprint for the 4g that most, myself included haven't been receiving? Is that the money that sprint just announced it would be spending to buy into apple? That's not what I signed up for.
Rant over.

They are committing to selling WiMax devices all though next year which implies support for much longer although they currently only have in place agreements with clearwire through the end of next year.
A crazed lady at the end of the call pissed the hesse and others off by questioning that they knew nothing about clearwire potential bankruptcy since they are 54% stake holders in the company. My take away is that sprint plans for Clearwire to fail and take the spectrum for themselves in bankruptcy court.
Oh but the epic 4g touch would take advantage of the 1x advanced 3g technology, but for 4G you are stuck with WiMax.

They said they'd continue to support WiMax. I would think eventually it would get phased out many years down the road, but if you don't have WiMax right now, I wouldn't expect it in the future (which sucks for me). At least LTE is supposed to be done by the end of 2013 and they start selling LTE capable handsets about the same time my contract is up. Any desire I had to upgrade early to the Nexus Prime (if it even lands on Sprint) or the Epic Touch just went out the window. I'll wait until I can get an LTE handset as my Epic is more than fine in the meantime.

Exactly the argument that I was making. It would be pointless for anyone to buy new phones at this point. Which sucks because I really wanted to buy the epic touch or the nexus.
Basically they are writing checks that they can't cash. And they are going get it because they are practically forcing people to get new phones. They have announced 20 billion to be spent on apple over 4 years and now the new network which will cost who knows how much.

Agreed, I've got no desire to upgrade right now. I don't really even understand how an iPhone user could justify coming to sprint. 3G will continue to be slow and if you buy an iPhone now, you are locked into 3G until 2013. It may keep some people with upgrades from leaving sprint though.

It looks like they will be continuing to support WiMAX until at least the end of 2012. They didn't really say what is happening after that, but I'm guessing that they'll still have significant WiMAX coverage through most of 2013.
From engadget:
The company plans for a rapid deployment of this new 4G network, with the first LTE markets and handsets to hit in mid-2012, and the full rollout mostly completed by 2013. Current subscribers signed up for WiMAX plans won't have to worry as their devices will continue to be supported throughout 2012.
and
By the end of next year, Sprint aims to have a combined WiMAX/LTE population coverage of 176 million -- with 123 million covered by LTE and 76 million overlapping both. When the network build-out is nearly complete in 2013, the company should have over 250 million blanketed in LTE, far outstripping the stagnant 120 million served by WiMAX.

Are you kidding? None of the iphone variants support 4g? The only difference is the att version supports HSPA+, which is certainly not 4g.
Also, nearly every phone sold will be upgradeable to 1x advanced, which considering this advanced 3g tech can reach speeds as fast or faster than current wimax, i don't think you'll be missing out on alot

This statement is a little inaccurate, as the statement made was that wimax devices will continue to be SOLD through 2012. As with nearly every cell technology, you can expect to still be able to utilize it for a long time.

One thing you need to remember is that this cost is spread out, so about 5bil a year, and sprint is nearing the start of the lightsquared deal, which will PAY sprint money...the figure i can't remember, but I think it was close to that same cost. So effectively, they may only be paying for the network upgrade.

That lady was a complete idiot. She argued against sprint spending 6bil on a new LTE network (that's nearly half complete mind you) when it would only take 600mil to upgrade clearwires network to LTE. What she seriously failed to understand is that clearwires total footprint is much less than 1/10th of the projected total footprint that will be covered by sprint's 1900mhz lte, and therefore this is more cost effective. She sounded like a typical misinformed PTA member.

Just go about your business and buy phones when you need them and stop worrying about this bs and people will come to sprint for the iphone cuz they will want unlimited data. I would not be with another carrier simply because I would go over 2 gb every month and f**k a $200 + every month that's just retarted

Sprint just slapped a limit on "wifi tethering" data to 5GB. What makes you think they won't do something similar to "handset" data once iPhone users come crawling around the corner?
I really think that was a step in the wrong direction for Sprint considering what people already pay to get wifi tethering... Now they have to pay the same price and get a big fat limit on their service... Not even grandfathered in to the new policy either

Cuz the unlimited data is the only reason that new iphone users would stay. During the strategy meeting dan hesse said over and over that sprints brand is unlimited data and they are changing the rest of the company to fit that brand. So honestly you have nothing to worry about as far as your phone goes

Pcworld sucks, and so does the article. The guy says the only 4g phone is the evo. Also, doesn't mention anything about clear planning to get into lte as well. The board members resigned for antitrust issues and so they can get other investors on board.
let it die, and quit charging me the extra $10 a month.
Ok...so what does that mean for us who own a Evo?? No 4g?
If they switch to LTE will the EVO work with LTE?
No.....By the time they get LTE up and running....the evo will be obsolete and another phone with reign supreme......with LTE on board.
we will still have 4G coverage........im sure they had a contract in place for the use of their towers......comapnies just cant pull out of things such as this.
If this is the end of WiMAX then I'm getting out of my contract without the ETA. Sprint promised me 4G in my area prior to me signing up for this bull**** by the end of the year. If that ain't happening - bye bye Sprint hello Criket. Sick of this crap anyway.

Wimax has been just a transitional technology from the start. It was a great idea initially, but took too long to implement and LTE is the future. Sprint WILL utilize LTE in the future, and our precious EVOs will be long forgotten by then anyway. I feel bad for anyone that was in the longhaul for CLWR since their IPO.
If you are reading this, your gay.

bender u have no idea what you are talking about... just keep following verizons bs. There are over 500 wimax networks world wide. wimax isnt going anywhere
Clear has stated that they have begun lte trials, sprint has stated that they will upgrade when they feel they can justify the costs, and further stated that even after they begin supporting lte they will continue to support wimax, and there have been several instances where various representatives have stated sprint is conducting trials for voice+data on wimax so it may well replace the 1xrtt/evdo rev.a standard they are using now, its also been stated that the initial differences in wimax and lte was not hardware but software and it is possible to update wimax compatible devices to run on lte but i doubt they mean at lte speeds, the way they said it seemed to hint that it was more of a work around, on top of that japan is testing the next wimax standard which has a theoretical limit of 300Mb and they are barely testing at around 54Mb, and as for the whole resigning thing, they stated that due to some changes in law dan hessey and others would resign in the interest of both company's and that both sides discussed it thoroughly, but they keep most of the controlling interest, and they reserve the right to appoint anyone to replace them and other board members in the future should they feel the need to do so, Sprint will still maintain the presence that they did before resigning
If you read my post you would see that I said our EVOs would be long forgotten by then. Yes Sprint is going to expand their current 4g network based on wimax for some time, but they will eventually convert to LTE. They have built their infrastructure with the flexibility to eventually make the transition to LTE.
Try researching before attacking DRK!

I Wonder What Sprint Will Announce

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2388741,00.asp
Probably the LTE switch.
via EVO.
Likely that they will be running both technologies.
Sprint can't afford for clearwire to faulter yet. Sprint will slowly move out of it meaning no more expansion of wimax, If they want the Iphone with 4g they will need to go lte anyways. They will limp clearwire along until they can afford to let it go belly up.

They own the company via majority ownership soo Clearwire is theirs to do as they see fit... It would be pointless for them to keep pouring money into it. But Supposdly the plan to run many technologies using the same panels is supposed to help along with expansions...
I could see them announcing phones with either both technologies, or just one of the technologies (though I highly doubt the latter of the two).
Sprint has too much to lose if they decide to drop wimax. That completely defeats the purpose of launching new phones with 4G. Not only that, but a lot of people that have switched to Sprint for there smartphones most likely have a 4G capable device. To top that all off, Sprint has spent a lot of money on Clearwire, so it would be extremely stupid to just throw all of their progress away.
Now I haven't heard of a dual mode lte/wimax chip yet (I remember something but I don't think it was wimax), but if Sprint did use that in future phones, that would be completely awesome. It would allow them to keep their current investments while also introducing new products.
On the phone side, I could see them announcing an Iphone, the Kingdom, the Galaxy Within (although that may come sooner), another Samsung Phone, and maybe a few mid class smartphones. Most of these are just guesses, but I would be happy if I was right
My .02
It would be nice if Sprint would expand both their existing 4g as well as the possible new 4g, as they have many existing customers who pay the extra 4g fee as they've been told by sprint stores that "it's coming" to their area.
It would be another disappointment if this turned out to be a dangling carrot to increase sales.
There is no "4g" fee. It's a fee for ALL smart phones. 3g and 4g.
Sent from my HTC Evo 3D.
This announcement is likely about their partnership with LightSquared, the wholesale LTE provider that was causing grief with GPS systems. It provides land-and-satellite based LTE that could potentially provide coverage across the entire United States.
I highly doubt that Sprint is going to keep investing in WiMax phones once their LTE network goes full-throttle. Clear is already having problems, and adoption of their services hasn't been as great as they hoped it would be. They'll be around as an ISP for a while, but Sprint isn't going to go out its way to develop hybrid LTE/WiMax chips when LTE is clearly the technology of the future. Honestly, why would anyone use WiMax when LTE is available in all the same (and more, thanks to LightSquared's satellite coverage) locations?
WiMax got Sprint out the door with 4G first, but that also means that it's old technology and everyone else has moved on to the latest and greatest. Sprint needs to catch up, and I have high hopes about this LightSquared service, both as a Sprint customer and a rural internet user.

I bet part of this was to stay competitive in the future iPhone market. I know there's only slight hints for an iPhone on Sprint, but I can feel it coming. The iPhone 5 will probably "only" be HSPA+ ready, but next year I'm sure it will be LTE ready. I very much doubt that Apple would build a WiMax version of the iPhone for only Sprint, and with Sprint's future looking bleak, they need every competitive advantage they can get.

But think about this. They are not going to be sinking any more money into Wimax now to expand it. And they are starting from scratch for LTE. By the time they even have enough LTE as they do Wimax (which still is not a lot) everyone else is going to be done building their LTE network. So basically Sprint is not going to have a good 4G network now for at least 4-5 years. So everyone get used to your slow data speeds. We are gonna have em for a while. Yay, way to go Sprint.

Apple Exec's and Sprint Exec's do not like each other at all. Apple thinks Sprint is a 2nd rate wireless company going down the tubes. Sprint would not be willing to pay their royalty clauses that Apple wants. You like Iphone 4 or 5 you need to go to Verizon or At&T. Samsung & HTC phones have gotten so much better. It is real competition now to Apple. Until the relationship is repaired you will never see an Iphone on Sprint.

Well, this is interesting... Just wanted to see what everybody thought. I'm scratching my head about it, considering the following thoughts:
- WiMAX?
- It is rumored to only be exclusive until Q1 next year when AT&T/Verizon will get LTE iPhones
- $20 billion invested to guarantee the purchase of 30.1 million iPhones over 4 years.
- I don't think Sprint can bet the house on something like this.
Just trying to wrap my head around it and wanted some other educated opinions...
No way that would happen
As much as I've been considering switching to the iPhone on Sprint when I could, if this is true I think I'd rather they'd dropped that $20B into the network.
I also read that the reveal of the iphone 5 tomorrow will be highly unlikely because there were no leaks whats so ever of this phone. In the past, every new iphone had a leak right before the reveal, but since the reveal is tomorrow and since the hardware specs points to a 4S rather than a new iphone, i think it's gonna be a while till we hear about the iphone 5.
that would be nice if sprint payed out to get an exclusive iphone 5 for a couple of months, but i think its unlikely. The whole $20b story, sadly, is true.
I almost think it has some validity considering the "Operation Leapfrog" rumor that was floating around recently. Having a WiMAX iPhone 5 exclusive with unlimited data at $79.99 for 6 months would yield some pretty significant sales for them, but until they roll out that EVDO rev. B/1X advanced network that was rumored, I think the iPhone would rape Sprint's 3G network the same way the AT&T's EDGE network.
So is this an apple forum or a evo forum
The iphone 5 is just another way apple is ripping people off.
Actually, we were more talking Sprint's business plans, but go ahead and troll it up if that's the only intelligent thought you can put into this thread. Kthnxbye

Dump in 20b on one phone yet post quarterly losses year after year.....something don't make sense here. Besides betting on one phone to save you as sprint has done numerous times, ie: palm pre. Lol

I really hope this not true... I know that sprint is kinda low when it comes to available cash but to shell out 20B* to carry an exclusive phone when their network has some areas where it could be improved sounds more like an impulsive decision instead of a well thought one. Investment-wise it might look like the push Sprint needs to get customers to their network (also because of they can use the shiny phone with unlimited data) but seems high risk.
*I am aware this is not a $20B cash-now type of deal... more like a sales agreement but still means that Sprint must dedicate more resources like advertising and training to encourage the sale of the Apple devices instead of any other.
Well I have to believe that Dan Hesse and the board are thinking that they need new subscribers (contract, not prepay) to start generating revenue so they can start upgrading their network. If the iPhone launches and cripples their network, it could possibly be the deathblow that finally ends it all. Or this could be a huge deal for them that finally gives them the kick in the shorts they need to realize their network is their Achilles' heel and actually fix it.

Great post! put the money into the network. they didnt need exclusivity as they still offer the best value of the 3. They could of still released the iphone and applied that investment towards the network. Now they will bring on a great device, without the data network to back it up. People will say it sucks and it will fail. Bad move sprint. Unless Hesse has something else up their sleeves. who knows.
if the iphone comes to sprint tomorrow im leaving to tmobile's new $30 unlimited data/text plan, im not going to deal with sprint's ****ty 3g speeds because their network is poorly maintained and they wont invest in it.
I kinda figured the iPhone 5 would be sprint's first LTE offering, well this just got interesting, I wonder what the 4G plan is Sprint is working on, u don't set those types of sales goals to announce the device is going to be out dated before it is released.

Heard from a Sprint guy they'll make the Wimax phones work on LTE somehow when Sprint launches LTE..using some type of converter. If that's possible....

I'm hoping its possible because Sprint keeps rolling out these Wimax capable phones, and if they are starting LTE in 2012, they are gonna have a bunch of pissed off people stuck in 2 year contracts with ****ty Wimax 4g. It would be a slap in the face to lock someone in just to say o by the way were switching our 4G source, deal with it.

Hopefully, Sprint gets an exclusive on a Wimax-enabled iPhone 5 starting this month while the other carriers have to wait for an LTE-enabled iPhone 5 in early 2012.

I'd rather wait for lte on Sprint. Wimax is pathetic, signal is flaky and coverage is down right horrible. And to top it off, bringing the iPhone to a crippled network could be the demise of Sprint. I know people are saying 3g has improved, but I have yet to see any changes. I've maxed out at 1500 down, but my normal speeds are around 300 kbps. Flooding this network with iPhones would be a terrible thing to do. Sprint should focus on network structure and leave the iphone to the data capping companies.

That seems to be the rumor mill online, the listed report states that Verizon and ATT will get the iPhone 4s and then get the i5 in 2012. Sprint gets the i5 with 4g as an exclusive phone. This will definitely boost their sales this year and now I see why they are getting rid of premier plans and changing things around so when the the next version of the phone comes out you can't upgrade in one year and will be stuck paying full price for to upgrade.
So looks like no i5 announced today.

Apple did not announce a completely new phone, just a redesign of an old one....
Sorry, kids, there’s no iPhone 5 this year. Instead,
Apple will start selling on Oct. 14 the iPhone 4S.
It has the same look and feel of the current iPhone 4,
but has updated internals. It uses the same A5 processor as the iPad 2,
has a full gigabyte of RAM and sports improved graphics capabilities.
It also has an updated, 8-megapixel camera with a resolution of 3,264-by-2,448. It also will record 1080p HD video with image stabilization.
• Yes, Sprint is getting the iPhone 4S, along with AT&T and Verizon. T-Mobile is not. If you listen carefully, you can hear T-Mobile executives whimpering quietly in the corner.

Sprint bought out.

Hey everyone just saw the articles all over tech sites about softbanks majority takeover of Sprint Nextel and since this is the HTC EVO 4G OG section and most (certainly not all) are currently or have in the past Been with Sprint, I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the issue. Good move? Why? Bad move why? Will it help bring Sprint life? Future of Simply Everything plans? Talk it up just keep it civil and friendly.

Pretty sure this thread belongs elsewhere. Here is a link to the story. Doesn't sound as though the deal is done, as you implied.

There's a newer article out. Reporting it is indeed finished and should be announced today. I'll find the link. But apologies if this doesn't belong I see much more "off topic threads" here Luke I want a GS3 blah blah figure this is somewhat on topic. As the OG EVO WAS a Sprint exclusive and so at one point every EVO was configured or running on Sprint. While I'm sure many of them (me for one) are still on Sprint and this could have a large impact on people. Again if I violated anything a MOD can surely close this or move it to where it belongs.

I think this is a great thing for Sprint on the short term, kind of skeptical if it will be good for us consumers in the long run. I also find it somewhat sad that one company that has some sizeable debt, has just purchased a controlling share in another company with even greater debt, and I believe must of had to make this deal on credit.... Wish I could do that ****, dem bastards... :banghead:

Yea I'm leaning the same way after more looking into. Hopefully this can be the influx of cash Sprint needs to.build the new networks faster and start drawing more customers. I just hope they keep the simply everything plans. I think that's a big plus for them. If they can't use this to get going again then nothing will.

This^ Unlimited everything (besides land line calls) is amazing. Not to mention their plans are cheaper. The only thing left, IMO, to get more people to move over is to get more 4g coverage. I know they are expanding more...and I just heard I'm getting 4g by me which I didn't think would come for a few more years so that's a plus for me
As long as this buy out doesn't run Sprint into the ground, then it should be a good thing.

Agreed most people agree the up front cash will allow them to build out the LTE network faster. Which is good. Hopefully the broader the 4G range 3g speeds will improve as well since less traffic.

Not 'finished'....
BTW, this is LONG from 'finished', this is just the announcement of the agreement... there's still a LONG due diligence period that is only now starting along with required regulatory reviews. I doubt this will be 'finished' until 2nd quarter 2013, if not later.

You get what you pay for. Sprint's 4G is lacking and so is their 3G speeds. Getting consistent performance is out of question. Yeah the data is unlimited but that's it. Verizon has family share plans for $40/phone and shared data starting at $50/month. You could spend anywhere from $15-35 a month depending upon your data usage but Verizon at least in Los Angeles is worth every penny. Sprint will be nowhere near that kind of coverage for the next couple of years and I am tired of signing contracts based on promises of better data.

Yeah what-ever, I'm pulling on average 17-20MB/sec down on 4G and no less than 1.5 on 3G. Verizon locks down bootloaders worse than Sprint has ever contemplated, and just wait till you go a few gigs over your "allowance" and get hit with the 2-3 hundred dollar overage. Everyone I know on Verizon complains, but to each his own.

I read on Engadget today that Sprint bought like 50.8% of Clearwire. I wonder if our how that affects this deal
I hope that by buying half of clearwire, it improves 3g speeds.

Whatever works for you man. I guess Sprint has Independence covered like a blanket I guess. BTW, each phone on the shared plan with Verizon gives you a good idea where you stand on data. If you feel you're about to go over, you can go to the next level.
I've been with Sprint for a long time and really wish the 4G coverage was better but when you lose to metropcs in a major market then that is a problem.

I'm pretty sure Softbank wanted Sprint to be in control of clearwire as per the agreement. But like it was mentioned the Grand ole Government still has to give the ok for this so it'll be at least 6+ months.
I also have to side with Jamie here I had Verizon for a while (pre-smartphone days) and their service was great but lately as a huge Root fan I'd never go back. They are locking down the bootloaders on so many of the best devices like he SG3 and another one I'm forgetting but they have plans to lockdown more in the future. And while Sprint isn't the biggest Root supporter they at least leave that door unlocked. nd once they get the LTE network built out speeds WILL improve, we already have it here in Baltimore and my buddies Gnex is pulling a consistent 20-25mb/sec which for us Sprint users is Freaking a god send lol. Combine that will never having to worry about Data which I use about 5-7 gb/month I'm sticking right there with them. Until they are a huge success or die off lol

Cool story! I dropped sprint strictly because coverage in my area was very spotty. I have no regrets about it and if they fixed the network I'd go back in a heart beat...I just got tired of hearing about how my market was always next in line...blah blah blah. I also have no issue with verizon. The phone I picked was easily unlocked... that is more research based..all carriers should have a Google phone that can be unlocked. Data is not an issue...WiFi is every where anyways...even at the gym. I pay just as much now as I did with sprint... but dont drop calls...and since I am military and have a wife at home with my kids...an on demand call is a must. I also know Verizon has the better freq. Band... sure in the higher MHz you will get faster speeds..but the coverage area isn't as big...its all give and take. I am rooting for sprint...but just got tired of waiting....I love capitalism and choice...so I switched to who I feel deserved my money!

All very good reasons to switch. Yea I'd rank Verizon over ATT&t but the those locked bootloaders. I havent checking in a while but the locked sgs3 was a huge ordeal being locked. That kinda thing makes me mad. It's OUR Devices not the carriers and if I want to root then I have that right.
