SamsungJohn is back - Vibrant General

So SamsungJohn is back and since the Vibrant has not received an update to Gingerbread I think we might get a final answer as to whether not we are getting it.
(I honestly couldn't care less I'm happy with my phone but it would be nice to know for sure).
So SamsungJohn, do you have any information like you did with Froyo?

Yea sorry to burst your bubble, but im pretty sure his big announcements are going to be to announce upcoming nexus devices.
I doubt we are going to see an official Gingerbread release for the vibrant because it doesnt just pop up over night, an official release require extensive testing, the likes of which usually result in leaks or at the very least somewhat substantiated rumors. If you recall in our wait for Froyo we saw countless leaks over the span of several months.
I for one cannot wait to see the announcement for the prime and other nexus devices. Im through with carrier branded devices.

Oh I already know that the big announcement is probably in relation to the upcoming Nexus device. What I was talking about is post #15 where he says:

Ah my bad, i only read the first page :x lol

I got his attention:
SamsungJohn,
I'm not meaning to harrass you at all, but is there any way you could shed some light on whether or not the Samsung Vibrant will be getting a gingerbread update?
It has been in question for a long time now, seeing as the other SGS devices got it... we are all kind of wondering why it was left in the dust. I mean, Gingerbread improves on the CPU the Vibrant is equipped with, bringing it to its full potential more-so than Froyo.
I, and many others purchased the phone on a 2 year contract with updates in mind. Its only a year old phone, it seems kind of rude that it has already been abandoned (if that is the case) I know you don't make all the decisions there at Samsung, but If you can see it from our point of view, could you maybe speak with someone that does have control over the situation?
I love the Hardware, beautiful screen, and Samsung in general... But please John, tell them they are going to lose future customers if they drop phones after such a short amount of time. It irritates people who bought a phone with the SGS label, and already people are seeing it as inferior to device to those of the same timeframe, such as the G2... Because HTC has kept the phone updated and their customers happy, Many of them will return to HTC for their next device.
Thanks for your time, and being a part of this community.

I am not sure what SamsungJohn's official title or job is but he is certainly not in customer relations. He has never given a decent straight forward answer. I almost think I would rather have a lower quality phone that gets updates than a high quality hardware phone that never gets updated.
I love my phone but not releasing updates has made me think my next phone and tablet will not be a Samsung device. I have a 2.2.1 wifi Galaxy Tab that has never seen an update and a Vibrant with only one update. And to be fair, the update to FroYo on the Vibrant was something that it should have shipped with to begin with. To compound the issue we get no response or time frames on any updates. That is just horrible customer service.

Thanks for the hardworking of T-mobile or Samsung,
I wont get any Android products without "Nexus" in their ass

I will stay with T-mobile because it suits my current needs. 2 lines $130, unlimited un-throttled data on both; but I will never buy another phone that is not Nexus.
I almost rather be the douche with an Iphone, know it's being locked down, have less features, etc, but know I will have a working gps and support in 6 months. Being able to make calls....well they are all just holding the phone wrong anyway.

I think we're getting DL15, not DL11 - Found this on samsung.com

Every morning I do a quick search of the interwebs to check for new ROM leaks - so I search "Epic" "Froyo" "DL11" "DL15" etc.
I just googled "Epic Froyo DL15" and THIS was the third result. It looks like an unfinished FAQ for a DL15 update.

So after more than a week, Samsung still hasn't completed this simple FAQ, no wonder it's taking them so long to get FroYo out.
I don't see why they wouldn't push out the latest version. Average person isn't going to want to flash again a week later for minor fixes.

This is really the only reason I miss the evo...atleast the coorperate devs t htc and sprint rolled out updates...they have gotten 3 updates while we are still stuck on di18
I have to be honest, I'm really reconsidering buy this thing. The evo can be modified in all kinds of ways, and it gets updates from Sprint/HTC in a much more timely fashion.
Samsung and Sprint doesn't seem to give a crap about the Epic for some reason, I'm not sure why since Sammy has sold close to 10 million of these galaxy s phones. I mean if you don't support these devices and provide timely updates, I don't see people being repeat customers of Samsung.
This has been my first non HTC smartphone, and frankly its looking to be my last, its a shame too, the hardware itself is terrific.

It's not that they don't give a crap about it. Froyo was designed on and optimized for a different processor and file system. For whatever reason, Samsung insists on using their own file system, which means they basically have to port Froyo to work with their specs. In addition, a company that only makes phones and pda's like HTC, can concentrate 100% of their resources on those products. While Samsung is making microwaves, TV's, Cameras, and whatever else, so they prioritize a little differently.

There comes a point though when they have to actually release something. Would you still be ok with the wait if they decide to start working on build DL21 and then move on to DL24, etc... and not release a damn thing in the mean while?

He probably means the "Communicate with Samsung" thread over there. There's a lot of Samsung hate flying around in there.
I hope Samsung really is trying to move in the right direction. Only time will tell how it pans out, though. The best thing we can all do is use the communicate with samsung page to ask as many good serious non-trolling questions as possible to try to impress upon Samsung what we think is important.
Yeah sorry about the wrong link. edited OP
We should all go in there and reassure the Captivate owners that Samsung isn't that bad since we are getting Froyo on Monday.

Oh, well thats just stupid then. You need to wait and see what SamsungJohn brings with "phase 2" and beyond. Then pass judgement. I dont like how he went about what he is doing and I have voiced that fairly well, but to call it a bs PR stunt is probably premature. And what credibility is XDA going to lose even if this is a PR stunt? Developers are going to stop using XDA because they got hoodwinked? Not likely.

I've been curious about the timing of all this. Is Sprint trying to save face because they've been the hold up? Or is Samsung trying to steal Sprint's thunder on xda? Or is it simply a coincidence?

Its a coincidence. 90% of Epic4g owners on Sprint probably dont even know what Froyo is or care if its released at all. There is no reason for Sprint or Samsung to feel pressure now more than any other time to release Froyo.

As far as John, hopefully his phase 2, or whatever the big thing is, is giving the Devs access to stuff no other OEM would do.... THAT would be impressive John... drivers, etc???
Even if there was legitimate software issues that really took this long to resolve, once its out, couldn't they post what they went thru, that could save face if SOMEHOW it actually took this long.... as long as that holdup wasnt anti-root security... that would be pretty silly... anything can be reverse engineered... ask the HDCP consortium....

I seriously doubt that had anything to do with it. Just taking a logical guess, I'd wager the more likely scenario is that T-Mo's GS phone had less proprietary carrier 'issues' such as TouchWiz on our side to have to work the kinks out & 'play nice' with. I'm relatively newer with Sprint from that angle, but in my AT&T history I know all too well how they like to cater things to how they want them and/or limit them.

The Never Again thing ended a month ago when Samsung decided to give us FROYO. even though it wasn't the OFFICIAL OTA, but we still got it didn't we?
Their hardware is great.
You want to complain about Samsung? You think we have it tough? Motorola in the past has always had LOCKED bootloaders, meaning NO ROMS for you.
We got the updates, and our devs have already begun on Gingerbread.
most of the phone's aren't even on Froyo dude.
Be thankful and positive instead of thinking negative 24/7.
If you get the S2, your 3G will not work on Tmobile in the US. The S2 runs on HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 frequencies, you want one that runs on 1700 / 2100 for your Tmobile to work at 3G speeds. Otherwise you're stuck on the Edge network.
Believe me, that was the first thing I checked when this phone was released for specs. It sucks, because I too am very interested in it. Personally I'd hands down much rather have the I9000 than the Vibrant, but I know if I ordered one, I'd be stuck with no 3G.
So yeah, if you're not on Tmobile in the US (if you're on say AT&T) then go for it. You'll probably get the next two maybe three releases of Android with it.
EDIT: This is assuming you get the S2 that's being released soon. If you wait for the Tmobile version, then yeah that'll obviously work and probably have 4G (and be running Eclair jk )

I'd disagree.
I THINK Eugene wasn't even working on Gingerbread, and neither was Master. A few other dev's left, and i think its a tragedy, because we DO need them in the end.
The only roms that i know are working on GingerBread is the EDT team, CM7, and TW
Yes, we probably need Eugene, and the others to get the other things such as kernels modems etc..
but I see what your trying to say, and agree with it, but not 100%
It would definitely be worth the upgrade. Assuming the phone comes to T-Mobile which I believe it will. This phone will either have the Exynos duo core or Tegra 2 chip with gingerbread. Gingerbread will be able to fully utilize the phones maximum potential.

huzza! got me there didn't cha?
It would definitely be worth the upgrade. Assuming the phone comes to T-Mobile which I believe it will. This phone will either have the Exynos duo core or Tegra 2 chip with gingerbread. Gingerbread will be able to fully utilize the phones maximum potential.

Which one is better I know Tehran is good but I know nothing about Exynos

The Never Again thing ended a month ago when Samsung decided to give us FROYO. even though it wasn't the OFFICIAL OTA, but we still got it didn't we?
Their hardware is great.
You want to complain about Samsung? You think we have it tough? Motorola in the past has always had LOCKED bootloaders, meaning NO ROMS for you.
We got the updates, and our devs have already begun on Gingerbread.
most of the phone's aren't even on Froyo dude.
Be thankful and positive instead of thinking negative 24/7.

I agree that Motorola and the locked bootloaders is worse than what Samsung does, however, that doesn't excuse them for practically abandoning Vibrant users. Yes, they released Froyo through Kies, but like you said, it wasn't official OTA, and to be fair it was not even close to the quality our devs produce in a fraction of the time. I'm happy with my Vibrant and we are fortunate for the great dev community and ease at which we can root, but you'd be an idiot to expect that to carry over to next gen Samsung devices. I'm not saying the next Samsung device will necessarily be any harder to root, but I wouldn't count on a the devs being their for the next gen Samsung devices. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong, and I hope I am. To sum it up, with the rep Samsung devices (except the Nexus S) have gotten so far, I wouldn't pick up another Samsung device and expect the dev community to be just as great as the one for Galaxy S devices.

Didn't see this posted anywhere, except in the rumor thread.
So, EI22 gets its own thread. Now, time to pull out the flame hammers, and start bashing Samsprint!

why 2.3.6... the nexus s 4g has 2.3.7
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't 2.3.6 and 2.3.7 made to fix problems specific to the Nexus?

as was 2.3.5... but as zander pointed out to me the original glaxay s got a 2.3.5 update from samfirmware... but 2.3.5 was for the ns4g to fix the speaker and signal... so idk... the original nexus skipped 2.3.5 and got 2.3.6.. then the nexus s 4g skipped 2.3.6 and got 2.3.7.... and that included google wallet... so i can now pay for my gas with my phone... oh and google even gave every ns4g owner 10$ in google wallet... which was cool lol
At least they're still working on it huh?...that's good to know.
Latest leak for T-Mobile's Galaxy S 4G the other day was updated to 2.3.5 so kinda surprising they haven't also switched to that while working on our Epic 4G.
If we get 2.3.4, it wnt even matter, case we'll be able to get CM7 working, then it won't matter what version samsprint gave us
Posted by Mr. Z's Epic 4G Touch+Keyboard
Yeah, I don't care if official is 2.3.4, as long as it comes out soon, and they release source with it. Then we'll have out fully working CM7, and awesome custom roms/kernels..
I'd rather them NOT continue working on it and just release it so devs here can fix all their f-ups. Samsprint sucks balls. After the delays Samsung has caused for both Froyo and GB, the only way I'm getting another Samsung phone is if a gun is held to my head.
I should have learned better after dealing with the Samsung Rant for 8 months.

So the millions (exaggerating) of uneducated people can blow up samsprint's phone lines and be like wtf this isn't an upgrade? Not everyone knows what root is... Samsung is just playing it safe. To the uneducated MASSES, they don't even know what gingerbread is.
[edit] that seemed kinda rude...but samsuck could care less. they could drop everything now and we couldn't do anything about it

This happens everytime we go more than a week without a new rdf. Don't ya love how they assume that root users are the majority?? Lol
Nevermind the fact that Samsung/Sprint have many PAID developers that have JOBS to do this development, compared to the dwindling number of UNPAID hackers that we have here.
Some people just get too worked up.
I really can't promise I won't get a samsung phone. Right now, they're so far ahead of the competition. My next will probably be Nexus or Samsung, which ever has higher specs and is on Sprint.

I want to see an official ICS on my Vibrant for a few reasons. So keep the comments to Sammy going folks. Don't let an announcement like this go out without voicing your support for it.
Sammy on G+ (with Facebook, YT & Twitter links)
Samsung is rethinking the update not T-Mobile...... If we didn't get an official gingerbread update we most likely won't get an ice cream sandwich update. It will most likely only be going to the original galaxy tab and the I9000 if any.

Developers have to start with something. Why not start with a ROM intended for a particular device with all features working, like e911?

Per this article and other, similar articles, Samsung is reconsidering. Not T-Mobile. The difference is, Samsung may roll out ICS for Galaxy S on other carriers and not T-Mobile, just like GB. Hopefully Samsung will atleast throw us a bone via Kies some day.
Squeek those wheels!
Yes the article sounds good but!, like someone above posted "tmobile [or samsung] hasnt rolled out gingerbread for the vibrant YET" !!
We need to up the pressure on both tmobile and samsung they cant afford to loose "millions of users over a dumb update" !
An thats what they are worried about!
So do what I do to every inane tweet by either tmobile or samsung retweet while working in the words > "...gingerbread for the vibrant..#shameonsamsung #boycottsamsung.."
Can I make a difference alone? no But Millions of us can!
Give them hell!
p.s. This is also the same for the pathetic excuse the cyanogenmod team came out with for them stopping support for the vibrant ie the 911 problem. The 911 problem was that way from day one with cm roms so cut the bs! The truth for the cm rom team is they got pissed off by someone and decided to screw all of us vibrant people over for the crap from one person!
yes different excuses but same results were getting screwed!
I most assuredly support cm rom team and all of the other developers on XDA but what happened to the team spirit? Come on guys post a disclaimer about the 911 and get back on the updates!
PLEASE!
No hope for us vibrant users. They are talking about international galaxy S, and probably US carrier versions that officially got gingerbread.
Ya this won't happen for the vibrant tmo doesn't even carry it anymore, they already have are money we had to ***** to even get froyo that had to be installed via kies mini. If one of the other us variants gets ics that would be are best bet, then again it won't be a easy port it never is.

I'm sure we will not get an official ICS from T-Mobile.
dont be so down guys, theres always a chance

Thats what we said about gingerbread ^
Yeah, Rider.. that's also what you said about getting laid, but.. here you are. ;D
i'm sure samsung said this just to keep all the outcry to a minimum as possible. delay, delay, delay until the people give up and move on. it only makes sense to release a non carrier aosp version rather than figure out how to shrink touchwiz being that this is mainly targeting the tech savviests out there.
so if any of you haven't yet, sign it! show samsung we care and want them to improve.
we might need to start our own petition.
this is for the i9000, but hey it's close enough

thats for i9000, you know that, but i don't think us signing it will actually do any benefit for US... i signed it anyways.
Yeah the same chances as us winning the lottery...
Why do people give in so easily?
I admit Vibrant will probably never get an official Gingerbread or ICS update. Samsung is certain to skip us if they update international Galaxy S to ICS. That doesn't mean we should throw in the towel. Tweet them, who knows we might end up getting an update to either 2.3 or 4.0.
Make your voice heard.
