Caught tethering on Atrix at 7pm EST tonight - Atrix 4G General

I posted this on the have you been served tethering thread but I think everyone needs to read this. I am pulling my battery now but ill get back online when I can (not using my Atrix)
So At&T caught me tethering. I turned on mobile hotspot for the first time today since last week and then **** hit the fan. Script running now that is renaming files, permissions and is even searching my dropbox files. It is looking for APN related files. That is just the beginning. I don't have much time to explain because im on the phone now and my data which was deactivated at 6:59 PM is now connecting me to a diffferent server and trying to change SU and telling me false information about servers and data. This really sux big balls like a hardcore virus so im pulling the battery until tomorrow. I will post logs and db files when I can. Don't tether using APNs [custom] because you'll get screwed. I don't see how this is legal.

I said the same thing as you today and over the weekend on here. **** came on fast. My phone is crippled and I never got a letter or anything. I've been with at&t 13 years with 3 lines and I was grandfathered on the unlimited data. Im getting UMTS speed even though the phone lies and says HSPA. I can't mirror HDMI, MMS is gone, not sure about SMS. Im not a developer but looking at the log file I wanna say root is is trying to be revoked and ROM is.being altered. I thought I.would never lose my hotspot but its gone.and I can't be the only person experiencing this. The log is telling the phone to appear normal to me so I guess someone might not even know they got throttlled if this happened to them while not using the phone. This all.started 7 hours ago and if they take anything else from me I might just throw my sim into my good old.Nokia 6120 because this blows. I hope nobody has to deal with this but get prepared!

Ok ball breakers. I might never post but I was trying to give people a heads up. Screenshots coming in a few minutes. I put the sim in my backflip and it crippled it as well. When you see the proof this quiet daily XDA user deserves an apology and expect some ball breaking in return....I can't tether and its gonna take me a few to get the proof together (I used tethering instead of paying for my old ISP) so I had to email all the logs to myself. If I uploaded the entire log files the message would take up half of the storage over at XDA so give me about twenty minutes to cut and paste. And before anyone says I photoshopped the pics let it be known that i'm far from clever enough to know what half of the stuff means. I compiled the first release of redhat about 15 years ago but forget the majority of what I knew. Stand by ball breakers and ball breakettes.

There's no way this is being caused by AT&T. The most they would do is change you to a tethering plan. Also, the Nokia 6120 was a TDMA phone, it doesn't use SIM cards.

Where this thead does appear to be hilarious this is true what im telling you. I am still working on screen shots but if this is not a tethering crackdown then what else would have initiated this script to take apart both my atrix then my backflip. It started the moment I turned wifi hotspot on last night and the motorola services and some other system services started going nuts. Webviewglue started killing all my apps, motoblur.contacts.unconnected appeared and took all my contact data, I think fluffy was another process killing and admob was having info sent to it non stop to do some weird ****. Root was not taken away but MMS is down and data is UMTS on boh phones yet they are showing their normal values. All of my APN related files were tampered with and dropbox is showing an x in titanium backup and the logcat said 27 files were noted. Maybe this is something else but motorola.xxxx blur.xxxx and system.xxxx files are the ones doing damage. I just find it very odd this would happen the moment I turned hotspot on. And one other thing is that when I pullup testing through *#*#4634#*#* the values when the radio are on are all false but when I shut the radio I get the true info. Is there someone that wants to see my logs who knows linux in and out? If this isn't tethering throttle **** then its something real bad that is ruining both of my phones.

Ford jacked my car on the way to work this morning! All of a sudden it started to break really hard on the freeway, then the radio changed channel to a Ford commercial, my car turned around, and it drove me right to the nearest Ford dealer. They told me they reprogrammed my Mustang on the fly via WiFi to be an Escort because they caught me going to a Meidas and not a dealer for tires. My car changed colour now, drives very slowly, and the computer keeps changing the timing so I backfire all the time! Am I screwed? Please help me XDA!

Funny... something similar happened to me

For what he's trying to do, they won't accept that.
the one they need is in status. they need to know this at every store. i had to go to a store 20 minute drive away and i have 5 cricket stores within 10 minutes... just because noone knows about this type of thing evidently in NC... damn southerners... i'm about to do the steps to get 3g working, then flash 2.2 and all that back up. the cricket phone service sounds just like verizon on my fascinate, can't wait to see how this 3g performs... haha i have unlimited minutes and text/web/mms for 55$ for my phone and 50$ for my gf phone BANG
and im bout to start flashing phones in NC and remotely eventually, so if you want to get down on this holla at me, i will flash you to cricket with mms and all working, assuming i get mine up in a bit =D
and i'm going to do it lower than everyone else... 30 bux. for one. two for 60. when the other guys charging 50 per phone... i'mma get all that business

Just a heads up bud, try not to promote business on the forum. I share all information just like the devs share their work for free on xda. But good luck, there are other methods to get it working on the 45 dollar plan but I don't share those as I believe it's wrong cheating the provider. Those guys will probably be your compitition. Oh and 3g is just as good as verizon.

Have fun with cricket, because as soon as you get 5 miles outside of a major city, you'll have NO signal whatsoever.
At least with one of the big 4 (especially Verizon), you will almost ALWAYS have signal.

Rooting & Contracts?? From The Horses Mouth

Just spent an hour on the phone with Sprint, talking about my account. Awesome rep, really knew his stuff and helped me save some money on my bill.
Anyhow, I told him I wanted to talk to a supervisor and give the man props for being good at his job.
In passing, I brought up the threads on here about Sprint tracking rooted phones and cancelling contracts.
From the supervisor's own words:
"Sprint cannot and will not cancel a contract due to a device being rooted or modified. Sprint can only void the warranty. Also, they do NOT have the capability of knowing if a phone is rooted with out physically examining it"
Now, a certain troll started some BS here a few weeks ago about the OTA and Sprint knowing if you're rooted by whether you accept it or not.
THIS IS FALSE!!!!!!
"Sprint cannot force an end user to accept any updates"
End of Story!
Thanks, the dude on the other thread claims the he ran RUU, but I think he forgot to flash s-on, so that is how the sprint tech department knew that he had root. I was very shocked by his statement of packet sniffing and root checking etc.
EDIT: the other thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1137063
The other thread is an example of what happens when 16 year olds root their phone and thether xbox 360.
Now he got everyone paranoid, a day before E3d launch.
Boehner.....
Also under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 if you are rooted only your software warranty is invalid (bootloop, and 4G key loss for example). If your USB port breaks they still have to honor the hardware warranty.
An exception is if you root your phone, load the wrong, or a defective ROM which causes the CPU to peg then overheat causing the CPU chip to China Syndrome into the system board.
i knew they couldnt cancel your contract b/c your rooted! thanks for the info hipkat!

No Prob. I had him specifically say, with no uncertainty, you cannot be cancelled for rooting your phone and they cannot magically track whether you're rooted or not from a remote location.
Now he DID say that if you are abusing by having 45 gigs of data transfer a month, you are definitely getting a red flag, and I cited the post in this forum when I asked him about it.
From what Ive heard the new phones will be have an OTA with a boot loader. I have also seen that you can uninstall sprint apps on the new EVO 3D without root. This, to me, says that sprint will have to be ok with rooted phones whether they like it or not... Also, if someone is using that much data, that someone needs to lift their head up and put the damn thing down for a little while.
Deep down, I think we all knew this to be true. That other dude was just careless

Which is EXACTLY why I put this thread up. I just got tired of seeing this fear mongering being spread over the forums, and since the rep I was talking to was super cool, and knew just how to hook me up on my account, I knew he'd be a guy to ask, then when I talked to his supervisor, I just laid it out with a direct question; "Will Sprint cancel an account because of a rooted device and can you see if my phone is rooted from a remote location?"
Well, now y'all know the answers
Do you know how many people would be purposely rooting their phones just so that they could leave Sprint without an ETF? Especially the week iPhone 5 drops?
HipKat, when I get back home to my PC, you've got a push on the "thanks" radio button from me coming. All these trolls come in here to stir up trouble. They must work for AT&T or summin'.

epic 4g sprint lost

Hi all.
I lost my Epic 4G Sprint. i had no extra plan with sprint for lost or stolen device and i didnt have installed any of those apps that find your droid. i changed gmail password and all other accounts. i am not worried for that as i didnt have much pics videos music or other data on the phone. i called Sprint and now my line is shut down, but i have to buy a new device full price.
is there anything left to do to track it or find it or something else?
when lost it was on stock gingerbread EL30.
any idea would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Install PLAN B from play.google.com now.
If the battery hasn't shut down, you might still be able to find it.
Though, you should've done it before you deactivate it. Even if you recover it, it's now been blacklisted by Sprint as stolen and there's no way to undo that.
You cannot remote install an app if you change your Google password.

if that device is screwed now cause sprint blocked it, why cant they just contact me and bring it back to me?
or is there any other use of it like a ipod or even use it on some other carrier?

There is actually a way to clear up a blacklisted phone. It is not easy but if you prove you HAVE the phone and you ARE its original owner it can be done. Sprint reps will give you a number to call and what not.

You can still flash a sprint ET4g to metro PCS, cricket...prepaid cell company with a bad esn. I have mine flashed over to metro...it was somewhat expensive...(mine has a clean esn- so if i want to activate it to Sprint, i can)...but worth it.Have you tried Craigslist to see if anyone has put it for sale? Sorry to hear about your situation. I hope you do find it.

Why would that be? This forum is about the ET4G...right? I have a ET4G...just a different carrier.Flashing a smartphone that I bought, with a clean ESN, onto metro so that I only pay $40 a month "wrong"? Flashing isn't illegal...I merely advised OP to investigate CL to possibly look to see if someone had posted it as well that someone can active a bad esn onto metro. Not all phones with bad ESN are stolen...

To the OP, even if you can't get you original phone back, you can probably find a nice used Epic on eBay or Craigslist for ~$100. Just make sure it has a clean ESN before you buy it.
My sister just lost hers over the weekend and we were able to find it by using Google Latitude. It would already have to be running on your phone though. The last time my phone was able to ping hers was the EXACT location where she found it. Pretty incredible.

How much for an Epic? I have one sitting around I keep as a backup. I'd consider.

Stolen N4 - Who blocks IMEI?

Hi folks.
I feel stupid (and angry) as hell right now. The worst part is that I can't even explain how it happened. I'm the most careful person in the world with my phone, and haven't lost a smartphone in, like, a decade, but I believe I have just had my N4 stolen from me. I had it, then I put it in my pocket, stood up for 10 minutes, then it was gone, and, of course, immediately switched off. All my careful planning is null and void; once it's stolen / off, there's very little that pintail, plan b, lookout etc can do. (?)
Anyway, I just need to know where and how I get the IMEI blocked? It was bought directly from Google, not via a carrier. Does anyone know?
Thanks. I'm off to dust off my credit card, and try to replace my baby
I would think talking to your carrier would be a good idea since they have access to block imei's. Even if they can't they are best able to point you in the right direction.

GSM phones don't have IMEIs, do they? I thought you pop a new sim card in and it's usable again.

Call Google, they can block the IMEI and remotely shut it down, I think I also seen that you can file a lost/stolen report with them. You mfight get a replacement, too.

YES THEY DO.
.........
I'm afraid you can't block your phone from every carrier in the world OP. You should of flashed Cerberus as a system app onto your phone.
Thanks all for your replies.

So far, I've filled in a form I found for order related queries, but that's the best I could find. If anyone has any help for phone numbers/URLs/emails, I'd be really grateful. I'm still searching.

If you use a mastercard and you bought it within 90 days, they'll replace it if stolen.

Badass. But just tell Google. They can block it from T-Mobile and AT&T. I think straight talk too. Emails take along while but they do get back to you. I would put flyers up near where it was stolen that say the phone has been deactivated and will not work on any carrier. If it is returned to you there will be no questions asked ( maybe even lie about a reward) see what happens. You can say my number is on the lock screen or call this number in the contacts. Maybe they will just return it to lost and found or something. Could be it died and you just left it somewhere and someone picked it up to give it to lost and found?

How much of a fake reward would be required for a thief to return a phone? $100 bucks? Not worth incriminating myself. $200 bucks? Then my BS detector goes off because you are approaching the price of purchasing a new one.
I like your optimism but too bad the world doesn't work like that.

thanks for this post. my nexus 4 was also stolen a few weeks back. I didn't even think to contact my card company to see if they would replace it. According to the website, looks like they will
And to think I was actually debating buying another N4 because my Galaxy Nexus is starting to act stupid
Sorry about your loss..
But according to your description of the incident... Someone stole it from your pocket after you stood up? How?? Or am I reading the op wrong

There was literally ten or fifteen minutes between me sitting at the table in the bar using my phone, and it being switched off when I asked my girlfriend to call it. I guess I was pickpocketed when I went outside for a smoke. Sucks, but this is what credit is for, I guess. I'd only just paid off my card
I just want to block that SoB from using it. I'm still no nearer to finding the right contact at Google.
If they didn't wipe your phone, go to Google Play on the web and install Plan B to your phone. It will tell you where it is.

The phone was stolen and switched off within ten to fifteen minutes of the last time I had it in my hand. Pretty tough to install Plan B in those circumstances I have various apps for locating it, as well as a number of Tasker scripts to locate, erase, etc. but they are all pretty much worthless the minute the thief has switched off the phone.
--
I have tracked down the phone number for US Google Device Support , which I have called and they appear to have it in hand, although they have had to escalate my call to a specialist as they were not sure if they could block the IMEI.
Thanks all for taking the time to reply. My new phone has been ordered and should be here in a few days. Everything's backed up to Dropbox, so I'm only down a bit of money and some inconvenience. It could be worse.

Yeah, at least you weren't hurt in the incident. It sucks to have your stuff stolen (I had a phone stolen about 2 years ago in a mugging) but at the end of the day we move on and don't let it get us down. I've found that I'm now much more cautious with my electronics in public, which I guess is a good thing.
Hello there, sorry to hear about your situation. I actually JUST lost my Nexus 4 this past weekend as well. Were you able to get a resolution from the Google team regarding the block on the IMEI? I've tried searching around for more info but haven't been able to find much. What ended up happening if you don't mind me asking?
