Galaxy tab 8.9 or keep my xoom - Xoom General

So my friend just bought the 8.9 and he says its no iPad but its wicked fast and that I should sell the xoom and Grr the tab. He is the one who got my xoom for my bday . And this kid buys every tab that hits the market. What's your thought on it . Should i sell the xoom and get the tab or wait it out for the xoom 2 or well just stick with xoom? What do you have to say. Any one play with the 8.9 yet

Yes. Do it.
Yeah, I'm Homeless.

Do what you want, but I still think the Xoom is the best tab. There will be more choices in the future if you want a new one, wait a while.

We are so close to the Quad core tablets dropping I would wait. You may want one, or the prices will drop on all older tablets, then you could pick one up cheaper.

It's basically the same as the Xoom but thinner with a smaller screen. No reason to buy one unless you really want the 8.9" screen. I like the 8.9" form factor but I'd rather have the 10.1" screen, personally. Performance should be the same or very similar but you'd be giving up a Micro SD card slot as well. I dunno about you, I'm pretty glad my Xoom has the Micro SD, I'm running 64gb(total) now.

When you say this "kid" do you mean he is an actual kid who uses mommy and daddy's money to buy every new tablet on the market? Because if so then he's a douche and I want to punch him in the face. Just sayin.
And yes, my response was worth the forum ban to me. I just hate spoiled brats.
If he is an adult that works hard for his money then more power to him. And yes, still worth the possible consequences. ;-)

1st. No not a kid but "kid" referring to someone older but not old like 40s old. He made a lot of Money in stocks while in his early 20s .. enough about him
2nd thanks for all the info on quad core and kool stuff. So I'm going g to sell so I can get some money back and put it in my savings account and wait for something better.
As for the 8.9 I would like something just a tad smaller. Or see if I like it. I'll be heading out to best buy this weekend to try out some tabs. Thanks again guys.

It's a personal decision, get what makes you happy.

Screens to small, and NO MICRO SD CARD SLOT which to me seems like a joke!
Even the new Sony at 9.4” screen seems far to small (noticeably smaller) compared to 10.1, i just don't see the point in it at all
Your just spending more money for less

I have a xoom and I love it, but when I sent my xoom in for the 4G upgrade, I decided to buy the 8.9 Galaxy. I must say I was pretty blown away witht he size and weight. The screens colors are much more vibrant. No it did not have an micro sd, but honestly I rarely use the one in my xoom since I have 32gb version. The xoom is not like the phones where you can install stuff from the market place on your SD card. I did install some movies on my SD card which did not perform the same as the internal memory. I was tempted to keep 8.9, but could not justify 469/569 bucks. The size alone seemed perfect for me when reading books and watching movies. It seemed like a great portable device which was extremely light. Instead, i may wait to see what the xoom 2 8.2 tablet will offer.
On another note, the Samsung had lots of custom features which imo were actually pretty cool. I was upset witht he fact that it still runs Android 3.1. Samsung never seems to upgrade stuff. I have an EVO 3d and had an EVO which is always getting updated to the latest greatest software. My friend has a Samsung Fascinate and he is still using Froyo.

I love je xoom! Except the weight. I'm running Tiamat and IT works well.

My wife picked up a Galaxy Tab 8.9 and it is a very impressive tablet. If I didn't already own a Xoom, I'd be seriously tempted by it.
It is incredibly thin/light (it makes the iPad 2 look overweight) with a better screen than the Xoom. And I think that the 8.9 size is close to perfect. More portable and not as cumbersome to handle as a 10'' without the feeling of sacrificing screen size like you might have with a 7''.
Bottom line: if you own a Xoom already, it's not worth buying another Tegra 2 based tablet. No matter how nice it is. That said, if Samsung launches a next-gen/quad core tablet in the 8.9 size - go for it.

[Q] Would you still advise buying the tab ?

There are 2-3 weeks before all the major tablets launch and I am considering buying the tab. I want a 7 inch so if i wait ill go for the flyer. But I was wondering if it is still worth paying $600 for the device. The new tablets will launch for $1000-120o so please advice me as to whether I should get the tab or wait ?
Just to add I currently have an HD7 as my primary phone and have been using the Desire HD as my backup phone and I will sell the desire hd to buy the galaxy tab. Plz consider this when advising. Thanks
Well, in the computer world there is always something coming around the corner that is better, faster and/or cheaper. That's just the nature of technology.
But, the Galaxy tab is great for me. I bought mine when they first became available in the states for $550 off contract. You can find them now for $500 off contract. To me the 7" size is a better choice then the 10" that most of the new hot tabs have. 7" is better for holding in your hand for ebook reading. The SGT is about half the weight of the iPad and Xoom which makes a huge difference.
The Galaxy tab has flash video for web but the iPad and Xoom do not.
From an ease of use and slickness the SGT runs behind the iPad but ahead of Honeycomb tablets like Xoom (read the Xoom reviews; people like the look of Honeycomb but they admit that it is not as easy to use as android 2.2).
If you are hooked on the 7" size like I am then you might consider the Dell Streak 7 which adds 4g to the mix.
As far as which provider to go with, I think one of the GSM providers (ATT or TMobile) would be better than the CDMA providers (Sprint or Verizon) as the CDMA tabs seem more locked down and have less development going on.
I would wait at this point - Samsung is suppose to be coming out with 8" Honeycomb tablet this summer.
If you can find one used or on sale
at a great price its fine for web browsing and email
and it's the only 7" capable phone out too, if you don't mind flashing it.
Just dont let anyone see you using it as a phone
Sorry is costing me $600 slight typo
Even though I returned my Tab, I'd still heartily recommend one to people looking for a great Tablet.
For me, it was TMobile winding me up that made my decision for me.
Awesome device, carriers did their best to make it fail it appears.
But some 10buck data plans? And the price it's going for atm? Well worth it I'd say. Seems everyone's pushing now for larger than 7inch devices, but the form factor is perfect. It's still luggable around (pocket requirements, but it's doable). Great screen, VERY decent sound compared to other tablets.
Sure, there's 3.0 tablets, but... Don't know. I think the Tab running 2.2 should be renamed 'Tab Classic' It's still very good, no matter what else comes after it.
I think now $500 new off contract and $400 used would be a nicer price?
No reason to rush into a Galaxy Tab with so many options coming unless its a good deal,
except maybe since it has a phone, I'd bet it will be the last 7"+ device with one.
YES
I just bought mine a week ago....luv it gave my ipad to my girlfriend ...I didnt realize how much i missed flash...7 inch is perfect for e reading ...portability is better ....10 inch to me is rather wide not easy to handle....
I have had the Tab for about a month and love it. I played with the iPad regularly since my girlfriend has one, but I consistantly came away with the Tab over iPad for 4 main reasons:
1- I much prefer 7" to 10" inch for mobility, one hand holding, ability to put in a pocket, etc.
2- I had a jailbroken iPhone and got rid of it when the original Droid came out. I still have a DroidX as my main phone due to the fact that I much prefer Android to Apple for the interface, customization, and app selection. Yes, iTunes has many apps and iPad has many tablet apps, but from experience, I found that many apps were 57 versions of the same thing, just with a different sports team branding or something, and I have yet to be unable to find a good Android app for any of my needs.
3- Even compared to another Android tablet like the Xoom, the ease of typing on a Tab is great. Granted, I have larger hands than most, but I can thumb type in portrait or landscape at about 35 words per minute, not too far behind my keyboard speed.
4- Last but not least, I use my Tab for everything. AllShare lets me use it as a remote to stream from the computer to the tv, with a cardock it is essentially a carputer, I can edit documents on a small device without carrying a laptop, and with it is great for showing off pictures and things better than a phone. That is only the tip of the iceberg.
I am sure if I put further thought into it, I would come up with alot more and this is a long post already, but something else the Tab has done for me that I really enjoy is that I enjoy it so much, I have gone from a lurker to a poster on many Android forums, including starting out here on XDA.
Forgot to mention price
Sorry, forgot to mention your concern about price. I got a brand new T-Mobile Tab (researching on XDA I found GSM had more dev work being done) on eBay for $425, so only $100 more than a Nook Color with the protection plan, which is what I had before the Tab and returned it after a week.

I have the phone enabled on my Tab and I use it all the time. I bought the tab without a contract and flashed it with the JMI rom and a modem.
If you buy a device that is capable of voice communication and you use it that way why should you be wary of someone seeing you use it that way?
The device is FCC legal, has a prepaid sim card and is running a legal operating system.
There is nothing wrong with using a device in a way it was designed to be used as long as you pay for it.

Motorola is getting an hint of respect from me... The less Flash (and Air) the better.
Anyway the tab is really awesome to watch videos, can decode with no trouble 1080p at over 40mbps... Plus i'd say this form factor is the best one. And it works as a phone.

get one! the portability is awesome. 10" screen is too big to carry around. at least for me.
Got the tab and am loving it !!!

The Tab is currently the least worst 7" Android tablet out there. I love it. Now priced at where it should be (here in UK at least). Pop in a 3GB sim card (9 quid on amazon) and it's the perfect always online mobile device. It'll be interesting to see other 7" or so devices hit the market soon. That's what I would be comparing it against.
The 10" ones are not mobile enough due to size and weight (I use a car dock with the Tab - can't do that with a 10" without infringing on some local law ). I'm also a bit wary of how the Tegra 2 chipset found in most of them is performing. Video especially seems a bit of a letdown. At least we'll all soon have a lot of choices in formats and features. Still early days...
My one concern is that we may not see Honeycomb on the Tab. I suspect Samsung will skip over it for the Gingerbread V2/Ice Cream (depending on rumours) OS which brings in Honeycomb features for smartphones. The Tab has physical buttons and Honeycomb would seem wrong with that. Of course, knowing Samsung we may see nothing at all....
Yes I am still happy with my tab.
I would have suggested an version #2 if it was 7 inch with better camera and SuperAmoled screen.
Will sell mine only if next version includes all that features without losing batery life.
Yes if you desire portability. Personally I love my tab,now my dad wants one too so I think I'm going to give him mine as soon as I get the replacement back from Samsung(tab stopped turning one, dead battery I'm guessing). I'm gonna get the iPad 2 since I already have the Evo, which I use on the go and I miss iOS adventure games

Samsung May Cut the Price of GTab 10.1

http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/04/samsung-finds-parts-of-galaxy-tab-10-1-inadequate-compared-to/
I guess that makes sense. Hopefully, it will be more in the $600-$700 range. Too bad there is no Wifi only version yet. If we can get $500 wifi only Gtab 10.1, it will be much more competitive. It's kind of dumb on Samsung's part not to have multiple pricing tiers. May have to do with cost of manufacturer. I don't know.
Which will mean cheaper parts i am thinking - Maybe the spec will be changed. Main thing will it delay the tab?
I think the specs wont be chged. The original price is too expensive n they cant duel to ipad 2 with tat kind of spec
Thanks to Apple that Samsung will decrease the prices of this tablet.
"A carrier source told ChannelNews that they are expecting a head on battle" between the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the new Apple iPad 2 and that the "go price of the 10.1" Samsung Galaxy Tab" was being adjusted from what was originally given to carriers."

That's great news, now if only we knew an exact release date.
Release date 03/22/11
http://www.samsungunpacked.com/html_ver2/
According to some sources. The release date for 7'', 8.9'', and 10.1'' GTabs is 03/22. That's what "78910" stands for. Lets see how many want to wait another 11 days after Ipad 2 to get Gtabs.
That event is for the launch of the 7.8" tablet. I would expect the 10.1" to have been released by then in Europe (or in some of them at least)
8.9" not 7.8" fyi

I love the fact that apple made the ipad 2 so cheap bc now I may actually be able to afford the gTab 10.1 before the end of the year...But if the gTab is anything like the Xoom I will lean near getting an ipad 2.
Also does anyone know if the gtab 10.1 has a sd card slot bc none of the videos I have seen show it having one?

What!! Ok, so let me get this stright; the gTab 10. is going to be a xoom basicly just with speakers in a different place, the mic in a weird place, and no sd card? All I have to say to that is wow, just wow, and the following I am about to say:
I don't know if it is just all the hype about the 10.1 tablets or what, but I am somewhat disappointed...I mean I think Moto should have took more time in deciding the placement of things and I think Samsung should have payed more attention in what people want(like an sd card slot, etc.) instead of just trying to make their tablet better then the Xoom and ipad2.
I could care less with SD card
Why? I am using Nexus S which does not have one and I don't miss anything.
Although, I prefer to have 64GB model, but GTab 10.1 has only 16GB and 32GB model.
I am hoping the upcoming GTab 8.9" has 64 GB model!

Well, I for one would be all but lost with no sd card slot...I mean I hardly use it but I always like to have the option.
I am not even going to bother ruling this out of my to buy list yet though bc I somehow always end up buying another Samsung device after I say I am done with them.
The truth of the matter is most people will never be satisfied with a product unless they have a say into it's design. Everyone has a idea of how it should be designed based on what they want, so unless they come out with a design-a-tablet, you'll be stuck with what's available. So since designing a tablet is the most unreal option, you will settle. To say that you won't get this because it lacks an sd slot, then why are you going after the ipad2? That too doesn't have an sd slot. If you are saying because of the size of the tablet, then you are willing to pay the over $800 price tag for a 64GB tablet? You might change your mind when you see a 32GB tablet that has great specs and reviews (so far) for prob around $500-600.
You can look towards the Toshiba Tablet, but it looks heavier than this, the Xoom and the ipad even. Maybe the HTC 10in tablet will be more to your taste, but you should hurry and get your ideas in to them so they put the buttons where you want them.

First of all a design-a-tablet would be so awesome, and oddly enough I can see that happening in the future...
Secondly, I suppose your right if sd card is my issue then why go with a device with no sd card slot also...and I need to quit acting like Galaxy Tab 10.1, xoom, and ipad 2 will be my only three choices...
Also I suppose their is also the fact that if I get ipad 2 I will need to buy apps I bought for android like Pocket God all over again.
Ok, so I decided I think I will wait to see a few more of the new Honeycomb tablets that come out before I make a choice about which one to buy.
Trust me, you won't be sorry you waited either. Just think how many times have you said these words: I wish I would have waited. I have said it countless times and have regretted that I didn't wait. Just look at the Xoom buyers, some are truly not enjoying their tablets right now.
Well for me the wait is almost over. Here I go...I'm on my way to the next Galaxy...To Infinity and Beyond!!!
Samsung should get the rights to that phrase. It would make a great a sales pitch. They could release a copy of Toy Story 3 with every Tab 10.1
That would be pretty cool...And I suppose the Samsung 10.1 might not be as bad as I see in videos bc as I recall I didn't decide to finally get my first gTab until I got to mess around with it a bit in the stores.
Anyone seen this one?
It just went to FCC for testing. Should be releasing soon.
Appears to have MicroSD & HDMI.
Any thoughts?
The Asus does look very interesting. A tab/notebook hybrid.
While I can see the appeal of having the transformer for on the go, I don't like the idea for around the house (my want for a table). I like the slider concept a lot better as it looks as functional as the transformer without having a decapitated keyboard on a desk/table somewhere.
It's a shame Toshiba is staggering their models release. I really want something now.

Xoom Ordered

Well just ordered my Xoom.
Had a poke on the Otterbox site and thinking of ordering one of them (Got the commuter on my DHD) as well as a matt screen cover (again on my DHD).
Then I came here, thinking perhaps I should of done that first as there seems to be mixed feelings about the Xoom, I mainly decided on the Xoom as it was the only one with 3g that I could get at the time..
Maybe I should of gone for the Flyer or A500 instead

The Flyer is an interesting looking device but the screen is significantly smaller than the Xoom (7 inch vs 10 inch), and it is running Gingerbread rather than Honeycomb. Also, it's bootloaders are still locked tight so rooting and modding will be an uphill struggle.
The A500 is a nice machine, but a bit heavier than the Xoom. Also, I have had bad experiences in the past with Acer which tends to skimp on Design and build quality at times. However the full size USB is a nice addition. On the minus side, the dev community for the Iconia is not nearly as far along or as active as here with the Xoom. In addition it is still waiting for 3.1, which if you are in the US your Xoom will have via OTA right out of the box or it is easily added using XDA guides.
I feel you made the right choice ordering the Xoom...and I agree, Otterbox cases are the gold standard, the crowning touch on a great device.
i have had the otterbox defender case for the xoom since early last week. it ROCKS! bullet proof construction. can be configured in a couple ways, ports are secured by flaps. they took the time to get this right. worth the money spent and the time to wait on it.
Not in the USA, in the UK so no OTA for me, guess I'll be checking out the ROM's soon enough, dont think I've had a device thats been supported here thats had stock ROM on it for more than a day after it arriving

Me too! It will replace my not so bad Gtab
I was looking for a small device, but so far the smallest announced is the LG but it doesn't have GPS and the price point isn't that great, one of my friend have a Transformer, it's a nice unit for the price but it feel too big!
The Flyer is't as powerful as the Tegra, and other model where bigger, beside the accessory for the xoom seem interesting!
Not sure yet what I am going to do with the gtab, I might as well keep it to have a testbed for rom flashing, not sure!
anyhow, ordered from costco in canada, so I have plenty of option in regard of exchange or credit (I expect the canadian version to follow the US pricing down to 499)
The reason why I am upgrading is that I want to use the encryption on the unit, I can't help to think about the nightmare if It got stolen!

I returned my A500 for the Xoom last week and haven't looked back since. The Acer is heavier than the Xoom but it actually feels lighter because of the weight distribution on it. Overall the A500 is a very nice device but since Costco had the Xoom on sale for only $20 its an easy call.
The pros for the A500 are the full size usb connector and working SD card slot.
The pros for the Xoom are the software updates, dev support, and more accessories to name a few.

Whats the deal with custom ROM's, same sort of thing as the phone, unlock, root, clockworkmod?

Since HC sources are not available, ROMs for the Xoom focus can only focus on overclocking, optimizing and adding small features but I can say that BigRushDog's work really adds to the performance of my Xoom.
BigRushDog (BRD) creates the Tiamat kernels and custom ROM (along with Solarnz and the rest of Team Tiamat) and is definitely the one to watch as far as custom romming on the Xoom currently.
Also keep an eye on the Launchpad kernel by TDR as well.
Whata bout the dreaded Tegra HD playback issues, that sort of thing fixed in the customs, what about the SD card slot working?

i personally hate Samsung products, the quality is cheap and they always break very easily. As well i think the xoom looks alot better and if i'm not mistaken it has a 5mp camera vs. the 3.15mp on the tab 10.1.
I had a Samsung N220 netbook, was ok tbh but the complete lack of support from Samsung was enoguh to put me off any of there stuff again..
The reason I went for the Xoom was for the 3g in the end as its the only Android tablet my supplier had in that was 3g, I would of looked at the Transformer but they dont stock Asus...
My requirements were, in no particular order.
Expandable storage
Bluetooth
Wifi
3G
Media Playback
I was also looking at the Flyer but they arent getting stock of the 3G one until the end of the month and I want it before then..
Xoom seemed to tick all the right boxes..

And if you get tired of verizon you can flash the xoom to another carrier like I did, $400 deposit for $35/month data my ass and thats after I gave them ****ers $800 for the xoom

3G is pointless with a 4G Thunderbolt to tether to.
Galaxy Tab has better battery life
Screen is WAY better.
32GB internal is plenty of data for me, I had a Xoom for 3 months and never used the SD Card even after I rooted and installed the kernel for it.
Dont get me wrong, I loved my Xoom, but I think its outdated now. Its big and bulky, and has a sub par screen.
Just my opinion, but I think my SGT is ALOT nicer.

Try this experiment, that I did, only don't use your GT. I went into a BestBuy and tried to flex/twist the iPad2, Xoom and Iconia, The iPad2 and Xoom were solid, no give. The Iconia flexed and creaked. Let us know how the GT fares, but use a display model, not your personal GT.
As far as viewing angles go, I've not found the Xoom to be problematic as once the angle gets extreme the viewing experience goes down hill because of the angle, not just the change of image quality. Although I wouldn't complain if the Xoom had an IPA or equivalent display.
flyer is extremely laggy

Try this:
goto best buy, and slam the ipad2 on the ground. Does it break?
Point is, im careful with my devices. Im never going to "twist" my tablet. Its thin, so yes, its vulnerable. Luckily I am careful. If you want a brick to make sure you can twist your device without it breaking go for it.

Motorola xoom , is it good?

hi everyone , ive just bought my motorola xoom mz604 , and i think its awesome because android honeycomb is really good OS, it is fast and smooth
but iam having some problems with installing apps, and i realized that most of them aren't compitable with the xoom, like the android games hawx, assassins creed and modern combat 2...
anyways i just wanted to know the adv and dis-adv of my device from an expert
thnx =)
sorry for my bad english
Answering the question in your title, the xoom IS good... very good, in fact. Sure there are a few apps here and there that do not work, but for the most part, everything runs fine. Additionally, the new scaling option in 3.2 ensures that more apps are functional. I simply love the beauty and elegance of honeycomb, and I still find the xoom to be my preferred method to obtain the honeycomb experience. Plus, being Google's reference HC device, we get all of the updates first.
I like it
3.1/3.2 is brill for emulators too when you connect up a ps3 controller via usb!

What about the Galaxy Tab displeases you and makes you want to switch to the Xoom? They are about even on features and such, with the Galaxy being slightly lighter and thinner.
Ummmm. Its the "google dev" device. With that said...
Moto is a horrible company
The xoom 3g has turned into the last tab to recieve updates
Still no promised 4g
Sd support is only soso...
I would recommend a samsung device...the xoom is a bastardized piece of hardware. Go with a device that is "popular" thus will be supported more....not the xoom

I couldn't disagree more, but to each his own...
I'm plenty happy with mine, just a wifi though and no cell network model. That, honestly, is probably the issue with slow updates just like it is for my epic: the company that runs the network it's attached to wants to manage its stuff (aka install crap and extra 'features') and is slowing down the process. Sprint is HORRIBLE with this.
As for why I chose the xoom over others - part of it was price, it was the $400 32gb wifi model off woot.com. Second was that it has actual ports on it (micro-usb, mini-hdmi, etc) and not some proprietary jack *cough*galaxytab*cough* that you need to hook up some dorky dongle to in order to get a usb port.
I'm pissed that the Xoom 3.2 update only let's you read the SD card but not write. That's ass backwards to me.
I have to root this thing to get that basic feature. I think they still haven't figured out the issue that devs figured out. Other than that I like it and apps are slowly starting to catch up.

Like most of the respondents to this thread, I have been very happy with my Xoom. I have had the chance to play about with most of its major rivals in the 10 inch space (The Transformer and the Iconia and a 7 inch Tab) and while each has pros and cons (and nearly identical tech specs), I prefer the Xoom for several reasons...
The build quality is excellent. The device feels solid and durable while also giving off a sense of luxury. Most people who have handled it have commented on how "high-end" the Xoom feels.
As a Google experience device (thanks to special ordering a US model), the Xoom has the best chance of the current crop of tablets to run Ice Cream Sandwich well in a few months.
The XDA community for the Xoom is the best developed of the current slew of tablets with many excellent developers and plenty of other users willing to help and guide you (and "gently" remind you when you are being an idiot).
I like the design of the Xoom, with the power button recessed on the gently curved back. The placement works well for me and I prefer it to having the power button on the front of the edge of the tablet.
Those are my reasons for choosing the Xoom as the first amongst equals, but as always, ymmv. I suggest you find a store with demo models of most brands and see which one feels right to you.

Fair Enough. Touchwiz might be able to be disabled when it comes out but maybe not. The xoom comes with a bit of crapware itself, dungeon defender and cordy are the ones that come to mind though there may be more.
It would not be worth the cost to me but to each his own. You could probably find a xoom owner who is fed up with Motorola enough to do a trade.

I totally agree with you. I bought mine with a $100 off coupon from staples. I initially wanted to buy the tranformer now looking back I dont regret my purchase. Love my xoom.

I had to fiddle around with the formatting in order to make it work, but I know the problem you had and eventually got around it. Try ntfs, fat, or whatever - just mess around with it in your computer until you find one that it likes. I forget offhand what made mine happy.

GT 10.1 or Transformer

I am in the market for my first tablet, and I think I have cut it down to 2 the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the Transformer. What is your opinions on both, which would you recommend? I will be using the tab for movies, web surfing, gaming, you know average use. I do want to be able to root it and I do know the B70 and on models for the transformer cant be root yet.
Let me know what you guy think.
Well I just got my 10.1 today and I enjoy it so far... I almost got the TF but went with the GTab 10.1 due to the size! It is a lot lighter and for the aforementioned things I think you wouldn't be wrong in picking either but as far as carrying it around I think the 10.1 wins out!
I was also interested in the Transformer, but got the Galaxy Tab. I love it! So thin and light, and the screen is much brighter than the Transformer I looked at. I do love the keyboard for the Asus and the ports. I wish the Tab had more ports rather than the proprietary connector, but am glad with my purchase. I bought the Samsung keyboard dock and love it too. Also, I think Touchwhiz is an upgrade to Honeycomb. I can't believe I'm saying that, but I think it makes it better.
Take it from someone who had a transformer and a 10.1 at the same time. Go with the galaxy tab. I only now have the galaxy and couldn't be happier.
The asus doesn't have an oleophpbic coating which in my opinion is a deal baker. I would go to show it to someone and the thing was so smudgy and gross no one wanted to touch it. Deal breaker.
Also the build quality on the asus isn't up to par, the copper trim flaked off very easily and it had massive light bleed. The thing seemed thin and compact when I first got it but after getting my galaxy tab it made the asus look like a boat.
Can't go wrong with a 10.1 on a modded rom!
I was in the same boat, too. I went back and forth, and I was ready to purchase the Transformer because of the price even though I prefer the design of the Tab.
Fortunately, I found a deal on the GT which removed the only benefit the TF had (for me), and it will be here tomorrow.

I agree with this. I was (pretty much like everybody here) looking to get the galaxy tab 10.1 or Transformer but I am happy with my decision of getting the tab. Although seeing the S1 and having it as an option while shopping for a tablet I would definitely consider the S1 as my tablet of choice.
Go to a store and TRY THEM OUT. That's what I had to do. I wanted a transformer till I felt the GT in my hands

I've never had a problem buying factory refurbs. I know most times you get a reduced warranty, but I run an electronics repair shop so I'm not that worried. Best Buy has refurbs for $399.
Get the Galaxy tab. I had the Asus transformer and took it back to Best Buy (3 times). Each one had backlight light leakage. I tried the Sony tablet as well. It was a very nice tablet. I would be using it right now instead of the Galaxy. But the materials used with the Sony is awful. The front felt like plastic. Plus I didn't like the S curve design.
I have a transformer and its awesome. Asus has been great at giving us updates and official 3.2
I traded my never used iPad2 3G 16gb for the Asus and dock. I had offers for both but the lack of external memory killed it. The additional ports are awesome for hooking up external hard drives and USB devices such as 3G cellular cards and mice.
However I primarily just use it as a tablet. As just a tablet I might have preferred the Galaxy but I do use the additional stuff and it has saved me quite a bit. At least the option is there.
The Transformer 2 is coming out in October with the first quad core. Probably nothing to make me upgrade but if your looking to buy, Id agree with everyone else and wait a few weeks. Pick up a quad and be ahead of the times for a while.
LG G2x - 2.3.5 MIUI
Asus Transformer - 3.2 Revolver

October is rumored! There is no actual date yet. For all we know it will be next year before the TF2 comes out. I think it is stupid to wait this long to give a release date if it is October.. October is 3 days away and nothing.. Damn Amazon gave a date for the Kindle Fire which is going to be released in November.
The only thing holding back from buying a Transformer is not being able to root it.. I like to customize my devices.. The one big thing to the GTab is its easy to root. Tomorrow I will be going to BB to and ask to see what Transformers they have to look at all there serial numbers =P. If they dont have a rootable one.. Ill just wait or look hard at the GTab.
Ive owned both and got rid of the asus as too many build faults on my unit which others have experienced also ie creaking body work and a blown speaker also when i had it thee was an imbalance in speake levels also that may have changed howeve it had not on the 3.2update
In my opinion the tab is a bette finished tablet yes updates are not as fast as asus but the tablet impresses a lot more than the tf did, the its a tablet its a netbook docking show off i did got tiresome after the first few posings
I liked the asus at first ands its not a bad attempt but the tf 2 is meant to be out very shortly i would wait

I just returned a tf back to bb for a tab 8.9. Functionality wise it worked great but the speakers suck. To make it even worse the speakers are right where you put your hands in landscape. I would rather have the ports but they werent that important to me. As soon as i picked up the 8.9 i fell in love. The size is damn near perfect. Ive always felt that tablets were too big to hold but this thing feels way smaller yet the screen doesnt. Touchwiz is a very nice bonus and you get earbuds in the box. Its only $20 to add a usb port so no big deal.
If you get a chance go put your hands on a tab 8.9.
I'd say skip all the Tegra 2 based tablet as the new generation tablets are coming very soon. It's just not worthy to get it at this moment.

I have a Transformer and my wife has a GT 10.1. If I didn't need the keyboard dock for mobile writing, I'd opt for the GT. Not only does it feel better in hand, but Samsung surprised me with the job they did with TouchWiz on the tablet. I'm actually a little jealous of my wife in the this case.
