Screen quality, weight, battery life.
Those were my points in favor of the Galaxy Tab. And since storage expansion wasn't even on my list, I chose the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Just about the same reason. 16gb is way more than I need on a day to day basis, plus if I need to off load or swap a movie I can wifi FTP to my phone or use dropbox. I have no need to ever connect my tab via HDMI... if I needed this kind of feature I would have gone with a cheap laptop.
So better screen, better battery, better sound, lighter, looks alot nicer... I also really like touchwiz.

I stream most of my media to the device so connectivity is less important to me. I also think using any portable device for streaming to a TV or home theatre isn't optimum with this generation of h/w so the lack of onboard HDMI isn't important. I got a 32GB version because I travel internationally a lot and download content for long plane flights. Samsung also does the best job with drivers for handling audio and video codecs. I have 2K songs stored locally on the device with a Rhapsody subscription which play via the stock music player or Bluetooth. It's because of Samsung's DRM support. I tried a HTC Jetstream for a week but it weighed a ton in comparison which makes a huge difference on the road and it sucked at video and audio support. The G-Tab also has a bunch of great accessories. I got it a Zenus Carbon Fiber leather case and people always comment on it. Besides, if you don't get a G-Tab people won't ask you "how do you like your iPad?"

I use my 10.1 primarily as a textbook (science and engineering mainly) replacement, so screen is absolute first priority.
Thinner, lighter, faster, better. I have no need for ports as you can transfer files over bluetooth or a network pretty easily and quickly. When I was in Best Buy the other day I was just looking at the other tablets and I have no regrets. They are so bulky.

I have one that hasn't been mentioned...
I bought my tab two months ago at Best Buy. I have a Samsung Captivate, and the GPS has been, let's say, underwhelming. So I flipped on the GPS on the Toshiba Thrive. It was "searching for satellites" for a while, so I went over to the tab and did the same thing. Instantly locked in. I pulled up maps and looked at the satellite view, and it placed me inside the store. I went back to the Thrive, and it was still searching for satellites. Sold me right there.
I took the tab on a backpacking trip, and used the Maverick app to display USGS topos, and if we ever wanted to know where we were, I pulled out the tab, and got a lock within seconds. Plus watched some shows, read a book, did crosswords, etc. Great value for me.
Screen is way better than Asus Transformer and Acer Iconia. Weight. Didn't need any ports because I stream most all my content.. movies, music, etc from home network.
I can easily mount in my vehicle. Plus it must looks cooler than any of the other
tabs out. btw 8.9 was just released and now a 7 here soon. So portable.

The bezel on the Transformer, for instance, is enormous making it really long and difficult to hold.

Pretty much everything has been said already, it's light, it's thin, looks good, great screen. Already had the SGS2 so would of known this would be decent as well.
I'm not bothered that it doesn't have no sd card and such 16GB is ample for me, google music takes care of that!
7.7 looks fantastic though but ill skip that and wait for next get tablets due soon.

The Gtab 1 or 2? If you're refering to the first gen, of course Transformer is better. As for second gen, its not released yet so anything people say is mostly opinion based on specs
I prefer the asus spec wise. All the extra standardized ports and external storage slot are why people choose android over ios, imo. Internals seem similarly matched, Sammy gets the prize for prettiest tablet. If these were laptops sammy would be an nice ultra portable and asus would be the good all-purpose.
I would get the TF for best bang for the buck. You will save 100 bucks and on top of it it has a microsd slot and hdmi port, where the Samsung 10.1 does not. If you just wants looks well then go with the 10.1. I believe that Samsung made a huge mistake not including a microsd slot.... PLS vs IPS screen,what 10% brighter then the IPS screen on the TF not worth it to me. With that extra 100 bucks you save you could get the dock.....TF for the FTW.....
I wanted a galaxy.. but I have to say the lack of SDcard slot on the thing was an absolute dealbreaker. I really couldn't be happier with my transformer at this point.. especially with 3.1 fixing the YouTube / video problems

this may be a little off.. but no one can compare the Samsung 10.1 since its not out. ill give you my opinion about the Xoom and the 10.1 off what i know.
I have heard from people who got the special edition Samsung 10.1 version, was that it had a better screen than the Xoom. the only thing that attracts me to the Samsung 10.1 is the thinness.. but after having a transformer, the size feels just right. I want something there , not just paper thin.
To be honest, get the Transformer.. I had the Xoom for 2 weeks and straight out of the box i knew there was an issue. I tried to enjoy it, but the screen kept turning me off. I went to the motorola forums and random other people posted asking if they would fix it via a firmware update? kinda like how the Nexus 1 got tweaked. There was no solid info regarding the screen. if your looking at the screen 100% of the time it needs to look good. At Angles, the Xoom looked blurry. I always had to hold it directly at me. While my Transformer (4 days new) i can set it down and tilt my head from my PC or any angle and it looks nice, colorful and sharp.
One of the turn off was that the Samsung 10.1 tab had a 3mp camera for front while the Transformer has a 5. these are just minor things but to me, id rather have a 5mp.
IMO, The colors stand out better than the Xoom but i cant compare the Samsung 10.1 which is not out yet.. With the new firmware 3.1 , it kicks even more ass. Samsung has said it would ship with 3.1 out the door. I haven't had any screen bleeding or creaking like a few have stated. Im completely happy in my purchase. Now i want the dock (which is not something i wanted originally) but the Transformer is an excellent Tablet.
What it comes down to is features, Skins ect. The Xoom has a Barometer built in, Transformer has a GPS without a carrier (but works better at tracking you when you uses a hotspot type of device) beyond that, its a click and it shows you the map where your at... i have had problems following me ...say in a car, while im driving. I think the built in Transformer GPS is meant for not moving objects but just a quick glance of the location. If you want it actively following you, like a cell phone GPS use a hotspot from Comcast 20$ a month or create a hotspot with your cellphone.
Im not sure what the Samsung 10.1 has exclusively built in. But since i purchased the transformer, ive forgotten about the Sammy 10.1 tab.
Thanks for the input everyone. Ya the biggest fear I had was not enough ports, especially the hdmi. The transformer is looking like a better pick to me. Just making sure that cloud based storage and remote desktop is standard on all of them right?

the remote desktop is kind of a joke, the reason being that you have to be on the same network as the computer youre linking to. mightbas well use the computer itself if youre that close! but this can always be replaced with other apps readily available in the market. i heard PhoneMyPC was a good alternative, only $15. as for the unlimited storage, its free for a year starting from when you sign up.

The screen on the TF is imho, very good but not great. With all the hype, a more objective review is required. I find the red a bit too brown and the black levels weak. I suspect the samsung will have a better screen since they want to showcase their new PLS screen technology.

I had been going back and forth for over a month on if I wanted the Transformer or Galaxy Tab 10.1.
I purchased a Transformer a month ago when it first game out and like it, but was also bothered by some small issues. And I kinda think it's a little ugly. I ended up returning it and waiting on the Galaxy Tab 10.1
At the time I thought the Galaxy Tab 10.1 would have a micro SD slot (it was shown having one at CTIA). But now it seems the Wifi model doesn't have a micro SD slot. And one thing I learned from my 16GB iPad 1 experience is 16GB and no micro SD slot are a bad combination. So if I was going to by a Galaxy Tab 10.1, I'd have to spend at least $600 on the 32GB model.
I love the look of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, I love how thin and light it is. I love the PLS display. At least I love all that third hand from what I've seen of it so far. But the price difference for me is now $200, since I could get a 16GB Transformer and use a 16GB micro SD card I already own to get 32GB, versus having to buy a 32GB Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Yesterday I canceled my pre-order for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and today I went to the store and bought the Transformer again. It's not perfect, but it's pretty dang good and better than anything else available now and apparently in the near future.
I love that it has micro SD, mini HDMI, micro USB, an IPS display, and is still pretty light compared to the other Honeycomb tablets out now.
I'll learn to live with the crappy speakers, goofy wide with rough edges, and ugly color. For only $400 though, it's also pretty amazing deal. And if I can ever find a keyboard dock, that'll just make it even sweeter as an Android netbook.
I really wanted to love the Galaxy Tab 10.1. If it wasn't for the lack of a micro SD slot, I would still be waiting for that instead. That is just one thing I really don't want to sacrifice. Samsung really is copying Apple a little too much these days.

Huh? Port forwarding! btw Splashtop is much better then logmein and its free with the purchase of TF. RD is a must for me casue I have my server which has no keyboard mouse, or monitor, having the ability to access it from the TF is much more easier then use my notebook.

I'll add that there's a version of Splashtop coming that will support connecting to any device via a Gmail account. The desktop version has already been updated to support that, and so all we need is an update to the Android version. Then, you'll be able to connect to any machine over the Internet without fussing about with port forwarding that the like.
I remember Asus stating that support for the feature will be coming over the summer, and so we don't have long to wait. And I'm very impressed with how well the solution performs over wifi--I use it to watch TV via Windows Media Center on my desktop while my wife watches something else on the TV in the bedroom. It's as good as being at the desktop.

I enjoy remoting my pc which is on the second floor while I'm having a meeting on the 4th floor. you'll be the joke when you keep giving bad example.

You can go either way if the lack of the SD has no impact to you.
On the other hand, there is the support side of it, which was the major decision factor for me.
20,000 people on a Samsung Pad is good, and there may be some good XDA support.
200,000+ people on the Asus EEE Transformer with custom kernels and fixes before asus can even think about addressing them is the biggest factor when it comes to android based devices.
Its the same reason I was on the moment, and same for the Epic 4G. Tons of people, tons of community support, so anything that might be broken has an incredible chance of being actually addressed as people will take it into their own hands.
Plus the factor that Developers will support and ensure their software works on the devices with pure numbers.
Oh, and on the Splashtop chatter. Take a look at your running services, its already there "Splashtop Remote". Just be nice to be able to use it, or has someone figured out how we can use it already?

I had the same difficulty, though I was under the assumption that the Samsung had miniHDMI / MicroSD / USB ports. Of course I choose the transformer in the end because the extra battery / keyboard option is a nice addon though I don't plan on to buy but if i ever wanted more battery I'd know how to get it xD. The other thing that help me decide was that I personally believe ASUS has a better support staff for computing than Samsung, personal experience.
I walked into a Best Buy today and was looking for a TF, which of course they did not have. they had an Acer Iconia, so I went to go check it out. It was really heavy, and was wondering if the TF is similar in weight. Looking back, it might have been something attached to the Iconia that might've made it heavy, but I am not so sure. Also, all internals for Iconia/TF/Tab are all the same so they will perform similarly if used the same way, correct?
I hope this is of some use to someone as Ive been on a search for an ideal tablet for myself since the Xoom was released.
Ive had the Acer for about a month and love it for the most part.
Galxy Tab owner for about a day ((so why a review ??)) Its not.
Its a physical comparison as its difficult to track down an Acer without a huge magnet brick stuck to the back and the Tab releases country wide tomorrow.
Anyways...here goes any questions more than happy to answer.

This was a big surprise. Unlike the Asus Transformer with its mega wide bezel the Acer is actually pretty compact in that area. So much so that stacking the Tab on top produced negligible difference. As far as height and width theres about 'half a skinny straw' difference.
Weight
Well this is where the difference comes in. The Tab is simply much lighter. If you hold both in your hands it may seem like a "slight" difference. But after a short period you will quickly notice the acer is just plain heavy. After using the Tab for a bit then picking up the Acer the difference is huge.
Thickness
This IMO is the second biggest determining factor. Do you want the slimmness ? .......Or the Ports.
Holding the Tab it feels like a larger Kindle. Or just a truly "slate" computing device. Ive had several star trek moments holding it thus far.
Acer has always felt like a laptop cover ripped off the keyboard where the ports somehow magically transferred to the top. Yes its thick but I can connect this sucker to a monitor , a external drive , a card reader , and easily expand with a micro SD.
Look good or be efficient ?? Your choice IMO cant go wrong.
FYI:Tab will require at least 2 add ons , plus a case that can accommodate your extra accessories in order to match connectivity.
Microphone-
**SO FAR*** my biggest grip with the Acer has been the awful mic. It just sucks. Dont know if its the quality or the placement but the end result remains suckage. Far too often a phrase like "When can we meet ?"
results in "can we me".... or worse "w"..... WTF?!!?
Voice to text is my primary need/use for a tablet, this was a huge deal for me.
Galaxy Tab has been better. But frankly neither are up to snuff to my Nexus One. Im assuming phones in general will just have better mic quality.

Screen-
Thus far there really isnt a reason to side for one or the other outside of need or preference. Until this.
The screen on the Tab is gorgeous and is simply richer in color and after flicking through Picasa it seems to have gotten a more accurate representation of the pictures taken.
While I do feel the tab pushes colors a bit much ;almost like oled does. Ex: The YT still shot Rebecca Blacks red jacket is too saturated
However over a wide range of pictures and videos it just felt more vivid with better blacks.
This isnt a Ipads "cool" vs Tabs "warm" approach to color temp. The Tab is simply a better looking screen.
Software---
Not touching on this unless asked.
I will say I still have numerous videos FC on YT and the browser does NOT have any quick controls on the galaxy tab. Major bummer and worthy of return or sell if it cant be added as I find the controls are what make two handed Tablet browsing possible.
Wrap up-
In short Lebron James is overrated.

If you will make regular use of the ports , or weight isnt an issue the Acer is the choice.
If you care about aesthetics and or mobility is a bigger concern then the Tab is the way to go.

i bought the acer because it came first in my country.... but then loving it... usb port is the biggest difference among 2 tablets in favour of iconia, where weight is the biggest difference in favour to the tab
I was contemplating on whether to buy Galaxy Tab or Iconia A500, and I chose Iconia A500 because of USB host mode port, plus the fact that I don't need any proprietary adapters or cables. Those kinds of things are surprisingly hard to come by here, and they're a lot more expensive to replace should they break.
As for the weight: well, everyone has their own taste. I personally don't see enough of a difference for it to make matter to me.
I choose Acer because of non proprietary adapter and cables...

I don't understand why people rely on the stock software and configuration for images and/or video on any tablet. Even with a desktop PC monitor, you have to fine tune the settings to get your photos and videos to display properly. I wouldn't use the Samsung's default display settings because I think they're (for the most part) over-saturated. I use 3rd party gallery and video apps, both of which allow for rather customized display settings. I'm very happy with my A500's display the way I have these apps customized, and this was very important to me (right along with the USB port and memory expansion options) due to being an avid photography hobbyist.
I hope that doesn't sound too defensive, because I'm really not -- I knew the A500's display is "cooler" (more blue) than most when buying it. I just think they all need tweaking -- even the precious iPad, which everyone raves about the display out of the box.

Well i bought Acer Iconia A500 because of the ports i don't mind a difference of 0.00000033mm in thickness or 0.000000888 pound in weight but i do care a lot if my device has all the ports i can use without the worry of looking them here and there.

I immediately installed mobo player. Plays everything but .mov thus far it also has terrific on screen controls.

I completely agree! If these were hd tvs you could not even begin the discussion without calibration. I even cut out a portion on it. In short since there are no universal apps to do this and most devices require root access ;along with the fact most people simply would not bother. So unfortunately out of the box is what people will judge it by.
But you are 100 percent correct calibration can fix many many issues. I have yet to try on the tablet but fully intend to.

I had the Acer and returned it for the Galaxy Tab 10.1
I'm loving the GT much better. The main reason I wanted a tablet was for mobility and having something lightweight. The Acer was nice, but after surfing the net for a while I was inclined to place it either in my lap or on a solid surface. If I put it in my lap it would start sliding all over the place. The GT doesn't slide in my lap like the Acer did. It's also not as heavy, so I don't mind holding it if need be.
All tablets that come with a USB will be rather thick in size. There's no way that the GT could keep it's slimness with a USB port on the device itself. This was a concern for me in deciding if I wanted the device. Once I found out that they have a USB adapter, I was sold. The Acer had many ports, but I rarely used any of them when I had the device. It all boils down to how you're going to use a tablet. That will determine which one is the best fit.

I had the Acer and returned it for the Galaxy Tab 10.1
I'm loving the GT much better. The main reason I wanted a tablet was for mobility and having something lightweight. The Acer was nice, but after surfing the net for a while I was inclined to place it either in my lap or on a solid surface. If I put it in my lap it would start sliding all over the place. The GT doesn't slide in my lap like the Acer did. It's also not as heavy, so I don't mind holding it if need be.
All tablets that come with a USB will be rather thick in size. There's no way that the GT could keep it's slimness with a USB port on the device itself. This was a concern for me in deciding if I wanted the device. Once I found out that they have a USB adapter, I was sold. The Acer had many ports, but I rarely used any of them when I had the device. It all boils down to how you're going to use a tablet. That will determine which one is the best fit.

I did the exact same thing today and share the same sentiments. I think the acer is very good at being a full featured unit out of the box. But it was not comfortable for me to use and my glove size is an 11. I picked up the GT10.1 and wow I didn't care what is was missing.

The Acer wins for me based on connectivity and flexibility overall.
PLease tell us about the software. Tab is 3.1....is it smoother? The Acer is still driving me crazy with the scroll lag.
Actually the weight and size difference is dramatic. The photos and numbers paper really dont translate well to how well it feels in hand. Saying that I do miss the usb port on the a500 but the GT10.1 is more portable and hand friendly. Using it as an ereader is great as well because it balances in the hand without feeling top heavy.
Go play with one at BB and tell me what you think, just curious.
Another reason for my switch was I truly feel thus device will sell well and therefore have longer support. Acer already announced they were scaling back production due to slow sales. Which tells me Acer really needs to do better advertising because they have a winner.

If you want a light hand friendly device then get the GT10.1
If you want a device that has more media input/output accessiblity device and offers expandable storage then go with the a500.

I have had every tablet out, and the iconia was ok, the screen is not as good as the TF, but at least the browser does not crash as much, no lag while trying to type, and the usb...
I am looking at the thrive... if I know what kinda of glass it will have I would order one.
More than happy with my TF'er. Tried the Zoom, tried the Ipad2 but neither come close. I'm mildly interested in the GT 10.2 to see what the fuss is about but the lack of SD card immediately puts a dampener on it.

I have 0 lag and havent had the browser crash once. I have 2 usb's slots and both SD and MiniSD card slots. I use a wireless mouse and BT headset nd get over 24 hours of battery life on hard use. Hwat else could you ask for?

As a launch-day Pre purchaser who converted to Android in January of this year, I have to admit that I'm intrigued by the TouchPad. webOS really is SOOOO much better in terms of multitasking that I'd love to have it on a tablet.
However, there are three things that temper this notion. First, webOS does not and likely will not have the apps that I need for quite some time. The TouchPad won't even have Office document editing out the door, which is simply ridiculous. I can't believe that Samsung can completely redesign their tablet and release it in a few months, while HP can't get a single freaking app written that's absolutely vital to their product's success. Really, webOS made me promise myself never to buy something for a feature that's "coming soon."
Second, until a tablet has a keyboard dock as functional as the Transformer's, I'd have a hard time switching over. There's simply no better device for straight writing (i.e., just laying words down on the page) on the go. If HP releases a similar hybrid device someday, I'll think about it (assuming the apps are there), but Transformer is just a great all-around mobile device.
Third, while webOS is a nice OS in many ways, I'm disappointed that HP didn't design it to make better use of a tablet's screen size. Ultimately, webOS 3.X is just a blown-up version of the smartphone OS, with the same number of cards showing, only bigger. They could have done so much more with it. I really like how Honeycomb's screens can provide so much useful information at a glance. I often just turn my TF on, check to see if I have any emails, upcoming appointments, what the weather's like, etc., etc., and then just turn it back off. It's like a dashboard for my life, and so far no other tablet OS comes close in this respect.

I don't undestand why you would want any other tablet (at least any other android tablet)
The TF offers everything all the other android tablets offer PLUS MORE... Anything else would just be a downgrade.
the only thing I'm lusting for currently is a fully functional Netflix app. I really love to watch movies quietly at night and currently have to switch over to my Nook Color to do this. TF is awesome, working Netflix would make it total perfection for my needs.

The Transformer is better than the iconia. I had one, the screen on it sucks and it weighs a lot more. The only things it has over the transformer are the aluminum body (I actually prefer the transformer's body but most like aluminum that I've talked to) and the speakers have more bass. IMO the transformer wins hands down.

I wish it had normal browser like Chrome with extensions and such. I wish it had mouse hover capabilities.

Yep the grass always seems greener on the other side. I'm lucky enough to be able to try them all out. I've got the Asus Iconia, the Transformer, and iPad 2 already, and the Galaxy 10.2 is in the mail. Starting to get a better profile of how I use them. Want to copy your camera photos to the tablet? Something with an SD slot will make you happier. Have movies on an external USB hard drive? Having a standard USB port will make you giddy if you want a movie off that drive to watch on your tablet. These emotional highs are momentary moments though, and 99% of the time I'm just playing games, reading email, checking the web, facebook, youtube. Every tablet does these fine, and during that time I appreciate the lighter ones. They all have a way to add a keyboard to them. Bluetooth is easy, especially once you've paired a keyboard. Apple and Samsung have $69 keyboard docks for their thin tablet dock ports. You pay more to get the Transformer's keyboard dock, but you get a far better integrated and multi-functional add-on for your money. Hooking up to these is an inconvenience of varying degrees. You are not likely to have the iPad or Galaxy keyboard docks with you when you leave the house, so they suck. Good bluetooth keyboards are always wider than these tablets are, and as such less likely to fit in the same case with your tablet. If you've got a case for your Transformer, it is likely for netbooks and will hold both the tablet and keyboard together. So if you prefer a physical keyboard to an onscreen one, the Transformer is clearly the standout choice. You have to weigh that importance though, as that keyboard dock doubles the total weight you'll be carrying.
I've been working on a showdown between these tablets for my blog. Easy enough to ding this one and promote another for a slot or port or not. Not sure the small time these features come into play will aggravate a user enough to choose ports over weight/looks though. Money obviously play a role, as the difference between the Asus and a full set of features with its dock and an iPad with all the same features via add-ons is huge. It help that the Asus starts out $100 under the iPad. Samsung is certainly brave going head-on with Apple, I'll give them that. They must be thinking that iPad buyers didn't mind no MicroSD or USB ports, and millions were sold, so microSD and USB ports don't really matter. They might be right. Time will tell if they sell more Android Honeycomb tablets than Asus. I can't see them ever catching up to iPad sales though, with nothing to add value to iPad prices. Pay that much and you might as well get an iPad. JMHO.
I am a very happy Transformer owner, everything else (at the moment) on the market, even the ipad 2, would be downgrading.
I love my ASUS transformer too.
However, if I had to pick another table between xoom or samsung galaxy v2 10.1 or iPad.
I would get the Samsung Galaxy 10.1, I checked it out at Best Buy yesterday and it was pretty nice. No lag at all either and it was very responsive.
Sometimes my transformer feels unresponsive, and it lags but it could be due to my tons of widgets on the home screen.
However if Samsung did have a keyboard dock like transformer, I would hop on it however I heard their updates were lacking and slow to be released.
Though I like how its lighter, thinner the transformer, and looks a bit nicer. Also I enjoyed the PLS screen as it also had more VIBRANT colors then the transformer.
because i tried comparing and this is heavy and screen is not as good as the other 2. Tab is really good. The price though is just off the mark.

1. USB without the need to purchase the overpriced dock like the transformer (after all it's just a keyboard with a battery!).
2. Alluminum back - believe me, once you've used a device with alluminum body, plastic feels cheap. I tried them both in the store and it was like trying a SGS and a DHD. One feels light and cheap like a plastic toy, the other - like a real high-end gadget. Also the pattern on the back of the transformer is not my thing - if you have sweaty hands it might help not dropping the tablet but otherwise it's just annoying.
3. Screen difference is not that great compared on full brightness. Surely not enough to compensate for the USB and premium feel.

...if im not mistaken the a500 uses a little better RAM then the rest. I believe its low power ram that has an edge in performance. I could be off though
I tried 3 different Transformers but couldn't get one without significant light bleed or body build quality issues.
I went for the Iconia as a replacement over the xoom because the larger bezel makes it much easier to hold, and of course the excellent connectivity.
As for the tab 10.1, it wasn't available at the time my 'early adopter' monster screamed 'I NEED A TABLET' in my ear.
I wouldn't change my tablet now, I dont need the keyboard dock from the transformer, and neither it nor the tab has those all important usb ports.
Yes the screen is inferior to the Transformer, but you really have to look hard to tell the difference.

USB port was a big positive for me, I cannot count how many times carrying my tab and a standard USB -> MicroUSB cable in my backpack has saved the day for my cell phone's battery or the battery of friends
Being able to mount a NTFS USB HDD is a *huge* plus for me, I have a 32gb MicroSD in my Iconia and love being able to plug into the external drives of friends to snag a few files from them.
Before purchasing my a500 I went to a local Best Buy and compared it with the Transformer as well as the IPad2, Samsung Galaxy tab and the Asus tab - the a500's screen seemed pretty much the same to me, but that is just my experience.
Had my a500 for a few months now, running the latest Taboonay 3.2 ROM with custom kernel, overclocked to 1.4 - 1.6 depending on useage (also great to be able to switch the CPU to "conservative" mode via SetCPU when battery life is getting low) and I am pretty damn happy with the performance.
My only complaint? The damn screen picks up smudges/fingerprints so easy! I find myself cleaning it quite often.
The Samsung 10.1 tab isn't available in Australia and i wanted a full size USB port and I wanted 3g. The A501 was the only option..

I chose it over the galaxy because the screens are almost I identical until you get about an inch away from the screen and it does not even have a microsd slot! Its identical to the Ipad and I want funtionality, not looks. Also like the Ipad its expensive for little features.
And for the Asus, its a very nice tablet, but I use USB a lot and I want a Tablet not a netbook. That what makes me mad about reviews and the dock is what always beats the iconia. Once there a keyboard its a net book not a tablet. The dock would be awesome for trips where I could use the extra battery and a stand. But I don't want to carry around a keyboard with me.

3) price (it's more expensive than the iconia to start with, and then you add $150 for the keyboard dock??? I paid $35 for a leather portfolio case with integrated keyboard for my iconia, and I love it, I actually think it's a better keyboard than the transformer one, and it doesn't suffer from the "yet another netbook" look that the transformer has)

c'mon! it has NO connectivity options and NO expandibility! if I wanted something that ridiculously locked down I'd buy an ipad... ok, maybe not, but I still can't see why anyone would want a device that has no expandable storage and no connectivity options.
As mentioned, the USB port was a very strong deciding factor.
To me, the Acer tab is one of the better all around tabs on the market. I love the portability and asthetics. The Acer looks further from Chinese knock off apple tablets. When people see it, they know it's not an ipad (not that I'm against I pads.) people claim it's one of the heaviest tabets on the market, and that's true in a sense........but it's actually one of the lightest for what comes with it. Sure the Asus is lighter, but add that dock just to gain acesss to a USB port, you have a three pound tablet.
If only the tablet had the ability like the Toshiba thrive to change out batteries would this tablet be supreme in my book. Oh yeah, better update support would be a good thing too.

What I don't understand is how all of these "early adaptors" want functionality out of their tablets with USB slots. With Google and apple both moving into cloud storage and wifi file transfer apps isn't USB and micro SD going the way of the dodo?

For me, I always take my Acer with me when I go out with my telescope at night. The place I set up at is pretty removed from civilization, so no wireless means no cloud storage. I can easily shoot about 2 hours of video which completely fills my cameras internal storage. When it gets full, I just run a USB cable to my tablet, transfer everything over, delete everything off my cam and I'm back in business. Then while my cam continues to shoot more video, I sit down and play Angry Birds.
I dream of the day when I can plug my telescope mount into my tablet and control it through screen swipes. Unless you use Bluetooth I suppose, the USB port would be the only way to do it.

I hate bringing my laptop. Bad battery life and heavy. Weight matters when your telecope assembled weighs 70lbs lol

I am not trying to sound like a mean person here... but I believe your the only person in the world that does this. (Edit- I stand corrected) I personally would just get expanded memory for my camera instead using my tablet as a flash drive.

what video are you taking? besides an usb adaptor from the 10.1 is available. And it doesnt weigh as much.

I very well could be the only person who does this. But the reason I don't get expanded memory for my camera is that I can't. I took apart a Nikon coolpix camera and turned it into an astronomy only cam. When I did, I lost the ability to expand the memory. Such is life. My point still stands though, a Galaxy Tab or transformer just wouldn't work for me. I used to lug my laptop with me all the time, but the A500 is way more portable. And with the addition of a few apps, I have all my star charts, manuals, etc. right there if I need them.
Beyond my very specialized needs, why wouldn't you choose a tablet that has so many more options connectivity-wise and a much more wallet friendly price tag? The main negative for the Acer is screen quality, but comparing it to the Galaxy tab, its a negligible difference to my eye. Everything else is the same or better. I've never had a hands-on with the Asus, but I'm led to believe that the build quality is questionable on more than a few of them.
Just my opinion, but that is why I chose the Acer, and remain very happy with my decision.
to fenguinpower: I take pictures of planets, galaxies, nebulas, etc. while my telescope tracks the object through the sky. I then take the individual frames and stack them to create a rather detailed picture of whatever I was viewing. It about the only way to get a decent picture of deep space objects without having access to say, the Hubble telescope. While I could get an adapter for the galaxy tab, with the Acer I don't have to.

I have zero knowledge in camera modification, but how does that render the expandable memory useless?
As far as expandable connectivity is concerned, that was my point about cloud storage. Other than your rare need to use your tablet as a micro SD card most people who buy a wifi tablet will be using it where, you know, they have access to wifi.

I have a Vibrant and a Samsung 7" wifi only Tab. I like it but I wish it was a little more powerful in terms of CPU and GPU. I use it when I travel in place of a laptop. It is fine for RDP and note taking. I use it at home to surf the web or check Twitter or G+ while I am watching TV.
I like the 7" size for typing better than the larger tablets. It is light and the screen is decent too. The wifi version of the Tab isn't as powerful as the GSM versions and it doesn't play some games so well. The CPU (and FroYo) seems to lag at times if you are heavily using it. Before I buy another tablet I am going to wait to see what Microsoft sells next year for Win8 tablets. I think they might be more useful to me.
I have a touchpad. After using it for a few months I can't imagine not having it.
Pros:
Battery life
Portability
Readability (the ability to hold it wherever you want makes it easier to read than a laptop)
Cons:
The need to pair a physical keyboard for type heavy tasks.
Doesn't replace a laptop
Cost ($250 is my limit before the cost surpasses the benefits)
Touchpad
Pros: awesome battery life, love the screen size for videos n stuff, pretty zippy even with webOS (Cant imagine how much faster it'll be with android on it)
Got it for $150 during the firesale
Cons:
webOS is pretty buggy
Flash doesn't work with my math homework so its pretty much useless at school
Really don't like the plastic build

I'm looking into getting one of those cheaper generic tabs like the Novo7 or something. I want it to play around with games and play with sketchbook maybe a little video and such.
Seems like a good deal since you can find them from $100-$200 and anywhere between 7"-10.1" As long as you do some thorough research.

I have an Asus Transformer.
Pros:
- Plug in keyboard makes it into a little laptop
- Keyboard has extra battery expanding battery life 2x at least.
- Battery life is awesome
- 10.1" screen is nice and big.
Cons:
- Stupid shiny glass is dirty before you've even touched it.
- Short (very short) cord with proprietary plug is a pain. Basically means you can't use it when plugged in. But you can juggle just charging the keyboard, as the keyboard charges the tablet when you plug it in. sounds weird, but works fine.
I'm very, very happy with it. I barely use my laptop anymore. And use my phone 50% less I'd say, as the tablet is always on and ready to go.

I have a HP touchpad running CM7 and its actually really nice. For being in alpha stage its already better than webos. Coincidentally I have one for sale unopened 16gb for $200 shipped. It was for my sons birthday but did not want it.
Asus transformer here. No dock but works for me. Battery is great last me a couple days. I love it. Need to get a screen protector though, a lot of glare.

I've got an Iconia a500, running the latest of the Thor Roms. Battery and speed are amazing, and it's way lighter than my laptop.
Tablets aren't laptop replacements (I mean, unless you don't type long messages/use your laptop for work/need the fine accuracy of a mouse- clicking the 'x' on sidereel ads is impossible on tablets!), but for light web browsing, pdf viewing, facebooking, gaming, netflix and a lot more they're ideal.
Also, the Iconia charges FAST. Like, scary fast.
And lastly, my phone sees far less usage for non-phone things these days.
I've got the GT 10.1 and I love it. Beautiful screen, no lag, and the touchwiz skin is actually useful and stabilizing. I use my Vibrant as a phone and wifi hotspot now. The only other tablet I considered was the Transformer, but it was basically sold out when I was ready to buy. I am glad that it was, because the GT 10.1 is so sleek and nice.
I have a Touchpad with CM7, and it works rather well. Don't end up using the phone much when home anymore go for the tab first. Also my laptop is getting a lot less use.

If you use tablets in class to annotate lecture pdfs, it's great. I can't imagine going back to taking notes on paper now. I use an iPad 2 with a Wacom stylus. Whether or not you need a tablet will depend on what you do every day.
I got a Toshiba Thrive and yes I know its the fattest one out there but I love the fattness cuz you get a good grip on it plus I got full size usb, full size HDMI and a full size SD card port with a 64 gb card in it plus its the only one out there that you can replace the battery yourself by popping off the back cover so you could have a extra battery for those long trips....and its rooted.

I have an Acer Iconia 32 gig running the latest Thor rim and love it. It's small enough to take to class with me and not take up too much space in class, but has a large enough screen size to make watching movies or games nice.
For on the go editing, I use smart Keyboard which is very responsive when typing, and for heavier tasks, I attach a keyboard, mouse and 500 gig hard drive through a usb hub. The soft keyboard disappears when a keyboard is attached and provides full screen editing.
This setup wouldn't completely replace either a home computer or laptop, but for a small, lightweight travel package that I can play games, surf and work on, it simply can't be beat.
