Windows 8 Boot on Non-UEFI? - Windows 8 General

I currently have a convertible tablet the portege m700 and was told by the manufacturer that no UEFI support will be available in a future update (no surprise there). I'm curious if whether windows 8 boots and wakes from sleep quickly even on non-UEFI devices. Can anyone chime in on this?
I have upgraded this tablet to last until windows 8 is released where hopefully I can get a x64 tablet with a proper graphics card and capacitative display (which I can't find currently). Can't wait to see the windows 8 devices that start popping up in a year.

Yes, Windows 8 boots and wakes up from sleep quickly on non-UEFI devices. The only problem is you have to wait for your BIOS making POST (not on resuming from sleep).
On my HP 2710p (with Runcore SSD) Windows 8 boots (from power button to logon screen) in about 17 seconds and 8 seconds of this are BIOS and Intel ME messages.

Thanks for that info. I have an SSD as well and currently my computer boots in 35 seconds with Windows 7 so I can't wait to see how it boots with 8.
Is the wake instant? I noticed on my friend's powerbook that by the time the screen was viewable he was in OSX again browsing, I hope windows 8 is like this too.

It's essentially instant. I love the fast booting. It literally takes me about 3 seconds after logging in to reach my desktop and it takes about 20 seconds for it to boot into windows 8 minus the time for POST while using a 7200rpm hdd.
I can also vouch for Win8 working with non UEFI laptops.

Dell XT2 Windows 8 Install Troubleshoot Black Screen On Install SOLVED!

I just got done installing Windows 8 onto a Dell XT2 and experienced a blackscreen issue where I guess the built in display drivers in the Developer preview don't display properly on the laptop monitor. Below are my troubleshooting steps if it might help others. Dont know if this issue is for all XT2s but whatever... Here it is. Skip to step 7 for the direct solution. The rest before that is just what I did to find the solution.
Major issue solved...
Upon first boot, I started to go through the normal startup prompts and upon getting to the WiFi connection menu, the screen went completely black.
1. Tried Ctrl+Alt+Del...Nothing
2. Tried Power Button press...Screen Flashes briefly then goes to sleep mode...Hope...
3. Tried Waking up from sleep mode...Back 2 Black
4. Tried repeating steps 2 and 3 multiple times...Same results
5. Tried Power Button Hold...Powers Off Completely...(Expected)
6. Tried Power button press to power on. Gets to boot menu options...brief glimmer of hope... Then Back 2 Black after selecting boot option.
7. A NEW HOPE (I know it is EP4, Don't be such a nerd)...Go to my trunk where I keep an emergency 50ft VGA cable (Ok, I'm a nerd and this is my rifle...I mean Jumper cables...) Connected this to a monitor. BAM The screen is LIVE!!!
8. Go to Dell website > Support > Drivers > XT2 > Windows 7 x64 > Video Drivers LINK ---->>http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?releaseid=R304366&c=us&l=en&cs=&s=gen
9. Installed Drivers and Win! (The laptop screen came up and everything was back to normal)
If this helped you solve anything...even what to keep in your trunk. Hit Thanks.
got a dell xt 2 and in any build of windows 8 never had that issue...in fact its been pretty smooth

[Q] Shutdown Problem: Windows 8 Release Preview x64

When I press the Shutdown option, nothing happens. There's no background processing, and the PC doesn't even show any signs of shutting down. On searching around, I came to know that there's a fast start up option in the "Choose what power buttons do". I disabled it, but still my windows won't shutdown.
This problem isn't with restarting windows.
Any suggestions please?

My first suggestion would be to rip out any non essential hardware from your computer, USB devices to PCI cards, anything and everything then see what happens.
A very typical reason for a failed shutdown is because a driver is refusing to shut down, its usually more to do with going in to suspend (S3) mode but ive seen shutdown (S5) and hibernation (S4) issues because of drivers as well.
Might no be the answer but if you pull it all out and you still have issues least you know what it isn't
though the motherboard can be a prime suspect too especially if its old)
Thanks! I tried as you said, uninstalled all non-Microsoft Drivers.
But the problem is still there!

Im starting to wonder if its a certain application as the issue returned. Had to do another image restore. I have now modified my boot up so that I can press f8 and choose safe mode. I have slowly started reinstalling apps and so far so good. I have 2 more apps to install and if the issue returns then I will get a better idea as to what's causing it.
Daz 3d Studio
Ashampoo Burning Studio 11
well what do you know, i come from work ready to install those app and the problem is back again.
So I thought ha ha! I got u this time as I added safe mode to the boot up...... nope, no good as keyboard and mouse are already locked out so I can't select safe mode.
what this does seem to tell me is that windows is not crashing because it sits at the os options screen before for a bit then continues, where as it could be a possible usb issue as the keyboard and mouse stops working at the os selection.
oh and this pc worked this morning before I came to work and I never made any changes to it.

Well I posted the same issue on a microsoft forum and here are some of the things I found out so far.
If you have windows 8 disc, boot into safe mode using that and then restart afterwards seems to temporary cure the problem
Viewing the pc over remote desktop shows the issue, for me it was Intel(R) 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 1C26 which has stopped working, uninstall and reboot temporary fixes that
Newest bit of information is that it could be caused by microsoft hardware i.e Microsoft keyboard, mouse etc.
You will note I said temporary fix/cure well that's because the problem does come back.

Shield Pro - APX Mode

Hi all,
I have the Shield Pro, running 5.1, and it won't start
It was working fine yesterday, but when I got home from work this evening, it was unresponsive. The power light was stuck on, but would not respond to any controller input or, as far as I can tell, any USB input.
I pulled the power out, and plugged it back in, and the light came on instantly. No display on the TV. I plugged it into my PC, but Windows doesn't see anything attached (I have tried multiple cables). If I hold the power button for five seconds, the device just turns off. If I touch the power button even just briefly, the green light comes back on. I can't get into Fastboot or anything. There is no HDMI output at all.
This is, naturally, really quite annoying.
However, after having it hooked up to my PC via USB for a while (not sure how long, sorry!), my computer bleeped like it does when a new USB device has been discovered, and bingo! I now have an "APX" device, with no drivers installed.
So. Who knows about APX mode for this thing?
I'm pretty sure APX is a low level recovery mode.. I recall reading that elsewhere.
go to the developers nvidia site amd search on how to reflash via apx
yeah, I had to use it on my old LG Optimus 2X, back in the day. There's nothing on the nVidia developer site about using it though

Apx mode ( and yes without drivers - couldn't even find around in Internet...) on pc ×device manager× shows me on my 500gb console when I removing internal shdd and connected with pc whiteout shdd (one day nothing to do and decide need open and have look what is inside in console...shdd, motherboard, cooler etc) . Another words sounds those symptoms very similar with my tests, but in my case that was mine experiments/investigations/discovery and your looks like you have some serious storage problem or kind of problem relaited with - can't read os or even bootloader which is on 500gb shdd or flash memory modul on 16gb.

after googling for a bit , i saw some references to the shield tablet, i think someone had an APX driver, maybe you could try that?
I could do, but APX mode is really, really dangerous. You need to know byte offsets and all that :S

if you know apx and you have all necessary stuff from Nvidia (which is not provided for public) you can replace internal drive or even ssd by installing bootloader, recovery, os etc straight on new drive from pc which is main factor why we can't swap them so easily, like 1 - 2tb drive or ssd - which would be fantastic ?. P.s. Something simular protection is for Xbox360 drives.

if that's the case you might have to send it for a warranty repair.. better not playing around if it's under warranty.
an idea for apx
move your shdd from shield and connect to pc then use this program(R-Studio 8.0) or other to restore date on u shdd I think it most work good luck

I have tab p7500 and have this problem apx only jtag help me in apx mode you should now wish sbl for tegra x1 and have nvflash for shield pro sorey for my English the easy way use jtag or tray to restore data in shdd
would there be a way to just dd- flash a new recovery withthe hdd removed from the unit? I am having te same no logo, no bootloader issue and am trying to either find apx drivers (non-existent) or a workaround. There has to be a way.....
i have the same question. My intrest is more in tinkering with the tegra x1 exploit in order to get a different root solution not contingent on nvidias closed source crap. I'm running a 2015 foster model and it is getting increasingly difficult to find tutorials on that system specifically with the newer updates. +i am interested in learning the process to exchange the hdd and mopy and manipulate the widevine keys that don't work on mine after the forced 7.2.3 update that occured with all update sofware removed from my system that also fried my controller with a botched firmware update that is blacklisted and not mentioned on the internet except people asking and all replies deleted. you know general unfettered access to the system without the bootloaders say so . All of this should now be possible now that the real hackers have gotten involved and decided they want to promote this exploit for homebrew it has caused several low level apx drivers to popup in corners ive found myself in from time to time if somebody will just get them to do it for the shield tv instead of the shield tab and the switch it is proven to work.

Boot loop problems

There has not been much action here for a while, so here goes!
I purchased a used Nexus 10 seven years ago, so it is probably 10 years old now, with original battery
The problem I have is that I have encountered a problem that I am unable to fix; when I boot up I receive this message
“Android is starting, optimising apps 1 of 119” (cannot understand the 119, definitely nothing like 119 apps on the device.)
The message is in a loop, and Nexus is unusable, I cannot get into safe mode, when I click on recovery mode I receive the message “no command” or get a message "download do not switch off"
Any assistance would be appreciated
So if you are in the ''no command screen'' he have to play around with the buttons so you get an menu, then select adb sideload. (with my Pixel 6 pro it's keeping the power button pressed and hit the up button a few times.)
In preparation it's an good idea to download the ota firmware files and platform tools so you can start right away once you're there.
If this all is a bit jibberis to you try finding an guide on sideloading for your device. The general idea is the same so if you can't find it for your device, look at the pixel 6 pro page under howto there are a few good guides you just have to adjust them a bit to your device. Andriod flash tool (via the google/andriod site) might be an option too, if the nexus is supported.
Thanks for reply, however I have had enough, wasted too much time , the latest is the only screen I can get up is "downloading do not turn off target.
Think I will surrender to a replacement, considering my usage I might take a punt on this at at Amazon Aus $109
