[Q] Loudspeaker issue ? - Venue Pro General

HI !
I just bought a DVP a week ago and though I'm very happy with it, I wonder if there isn't a problem with one of the bottom loudspeakers.
To put it shortly, the right one seems to work perfectly well but if I cover it with my thumb or whatever, I realize that the left one emits at a poor volume in comparison.
I thought this problem could come from the fact that they work as a two-ways speaker, the left one being dedicated to high frequencies, the second one to mediums, but frankly it hardly makes sense IMO.
What about you guys ? Do both your speakers emit the exact same sound and volume or do you have this difference too ?
Thanks.

One is a speaker one is a mic. I think it's the one on the right that is the speaker. Can't turn it on at the moment. Its still pretty loud imo.
Sent from my Venue Pro using XDA Windows Phone 7 App

Hey, thanks for the quick answer Kenji, but both of them are speakers according to the user's manual... (implying that user's manuals are always right, of course)
Still no clue on the "should I send it back" question...

Don't read too much into the user manual. There's only one loudspeaker, the other grill is for the mic, just like on the iPhone.

I believe one is speaker, the other is mic. At least they were/are in my experience with four venue pros.

Well, what a relief ! That wraps it up.
Thanks for your answers, all of you !

Had accident, smashed speaker, need new one

Hi all,
I had an accident and fell flat down to the ground with my TyTN in the belt pocket, exactly between my hip bone and the ground.
Now I have some more cosmetic plastic issues, but this would be acceptable. The bad thing is the Mail button is like a "sensor key" now, but works. The really bad thing is, the plastic speaker item inside (connected to the toppoly board, the speaker where the sound during calls comes out) is completely smashed and there's no more sound.
Since the rest is perfectly well, no screen damage (and no wrong alignments!!!) I would like to keep this phone but need a new speaker.
Could you guys help me to find such a speaker? The only part number on it is
501E6234A . It is a white plastic part, two gold connectors on the board side, a metal cover (now smashed) and a membrane on between the cover. You can see it on the attached pic, it's the white plastic rectangle in the middle.
Any help would be very much appreciated!
Thanks in advance and greetings from Munich,
Torben
Hi Torben...
Did you ever find a replacement speaker? I have the same problem as you and need one
Thanks
Hey Fallingonion,
I am sorry, but I don't have any good news... I was in contact with a German company that usually repairs all kind of mobile phones for sales companies. They told me since the device is still too new they haven't received any replacement parts yet. The only way to have it repaired would be sending it in to HTC.
I did that in December and am still waiting for it to come back - and what it will cost.
How did you break your phone?
Torben
I've seen a few parted out Hermes on ebay - you might try that.
Hey lacroixdp,
thanks for this hint, too bad it's too late for me - but maybe Fallingonion can get a new speaker from there.
Greetings,
Torben

I've done some digging around, and may have found a suitable alternative It looks like the Motorola L6 / L7 might use the same part...
I figured the speaker would not be unique to the TyTN - some other phone or PDA must use the same one - so I went looking for disassembly instructions for other phones in the hope that they might show the same speaker.
If you check Step 9 in this pdf you can see what looks like the same earpiece speaker (even though it looks like they may have unfortunately damaged it during removal - you can see the metal face plate is still attached to the front of the phone.) What do you think?
I've ordered one to see if it fits - I'll let you know what I find
I didn't actually break mine - I bought one from eBay, only to find that the earpiece distorted if you turned the volume up So I took it apart and found that the metal shield on the front of the speaker was dented slightly - I guess enough for the speaker membrane to hit it.
If the Motorola speaker works, maybe you can get your phone back from HTC before they charge you a fortune?
Wow, yes, definitely looks the same - I simply cannot say anything about the actual size.
Let me know what comes out - too bad I already sent mine in for a repair! I doubt I can still get it back without a repair :-(
I am curious though anyway

Difficult to say if this the TyTn front speaker (earpiece) is identical to the one shown in Motorola PDF, might well function ok even if specs are slightly different though. In terms of delicate electronics were at the ironmongery end of the scale here!!!

That's what I'm hoping, Mike
The speaker in your photos looks exactly like the one in the TyTN - are they of the TyTN earpiece or the Motorola one?
EDIT by Mike - The pictures above are of the TYTN fron speaker/earpiece. And we now know the Motorola L6/L7 does work as a replacement.
I know that it is a complete offtopic ... but this is the reason why I use the aluminium case for my Vario II it just saves lifes ..
Just as an update - the replacement Motorola speaker that I was sent works fine
It was not a perfect match for the old one - it was necessary to slightly bend the contacts outwards to make sure that they made proper contact with the pads on the circuit board - but other than that replacement was simple. Sound quality of the new speaker is fine, and seems a bit louder than the original, although I could be imagining that
In case anyone else has the same problem, the only place in the UK that I could find advertising the necessary part was Phatphones (see "Speaker/Earpiece for Motorola L6/L7" on this page.) The part was quite expensive compared to other replacement speakers, but as I said it was the only one available.
Cheers all -
When your speaker out of order, did you try to using the orignal headset? I have the same accident as you did. But ,There is no sound at all.I try to using the orignal headset, but still don't work. I am not sure , if it is the speaker problem or the sound IC problem. Now. I can only using the Bluetooth headset.

Can I hold the Athena up to my ear?

I'm soooo on the fringe of buying this from Amazon but the ONE thing keeping me is the fact of taking phone calls in private. First off I HATE bluetooth headsets. I only want to carry my device. Nothing else... With that said are the speakers on the Advantage located so as I can put my ear up to it and cancel out the sound so others can't hear what other people are saying? Or are there dual speakers on the side which would make it quite hard?
Does anyone out there with an Advantage use it like this to take/place calls? Man I'm about to pull the trigger I just can't stand it doesn't have an earpiece...
Is there a super flat bluetooth headset I could possibly attach to the back?
I honestly don't talk that much on my phones mostly data and stuff but when I do need to talk I'd rather not have everyone else hear it...
Thanks.

No respectable Athena owners would put this phone up to their face. I use the LG Stlye-I as do others. I agree with you that the BT Earpiece is way over done and in some instances rude to wear.
Having the Style-I for the Athena gets loads of attention as most folks believe that it is your phone (and it's quite the piece). It is smaller than an average hi-lighter pen, has great battery life and a nice caller ID display. Only downside is that it rings quietly and does not have a vibrate mode.
Check e-bay as they run $30 or so depending on the listing.
I'm one of those who are not respectable, and I can't care less if I look like a nut to others. I do turn my volume to the lowest though, but that won't silent it enough. For calls which are important,I do pluck in my wired headset which I use for mp3 anyway. For VOIP I always use wired headset to prevent echo to the other party.
My advice is for you to buy other type of PDA instead of Athena if you are very strongly against using headset (need not be bt, wired will do very well) and feel bothered holding it against your face .
Regards.
I have a bluetooth headset and the wired microphone but I often just use my Ameo straight up to my face. It works ok but does look silly and you have to mess around with the volume. Not good in a quiet office environment because others will hear.
Summary: Possible but NOT ideal!
When going grocery shopping it's a bit ackward to put the phone to my ear and maneuver with 5 plus bags at the same time. I like to keep my hands free, and IMHO the Athena Is just a big too big to keep it to my ear, not only that the volume just isn't low enough to make the conversation private. As eaglesteve stated your best bet would be to get a different wm device. The phone is truely not a 1 handed device, however do keep in mind it has one of the biggest screens available on mobile devices. Just my 2 cents.
Oh and btw there's a seller on ebay stating he has 10 units available at $450 USD and the sale is ending in about 2 hrs. Hope this helps, here's the link:

thanks for the feedback guys
I have many winmo phones but the screen on the Advantage really appeals to me.

Like others have said, holding the phone up to your ear does work, but people close can hear your whole conversation.
I use the LG-StyleI and it works great. Leave your advantage on your belt (buy a tuff-as-nuts case) and answer and call using the style-i. You right the screen is great. I also have many winmo phones and the screen on the advantage can't be beat.
I am an occasional phone user. Nobody wants to talk to me ;-) But the sheer joy of owning one of these beasts far outweighs any inconvenience when using the phone (for an occasional user). The screen is large enough to make all the hype about watching videos, reading books, using spreadsheets, viewing website pages, playing hi res games, etc practical and enjoyable. BUY IT!
Athena up to my ear for tellyphone conversation
To juiceppc ,
i own an athena since January 2007 and have been frequently making & receiving calls by putting either my left ear or my right ear near to the right speaker like the Nokia Engage handphone and my mouth not so near to the mic on the left bottom of my athena with both speakers volume and mic volume to the maximum , and in my country - Malaysia i can talk using this way with 100% clarity in a quite enviroment or about 60% to 70% clarity on outdoors but 40% to 50% clarity on jobsites / noisy enviroment. Sometimes i encounter some breakups and cracking calls but other than that i think it's okay for my usage. You can always adjust both volumes to suit your calls but you may need some practise to get the hang of it. I hope this helps & sorry for very late posting

HTC Touch Diamond speaker

Is there any way of improving sound quality from the standard speaker on the HTC TD ?
The speaker works but is very tinny when compared to other phones in hands free mode.
Is this a hardware issue, and hence nothing can be done, or is there a software frig that will help sound quality ?
hi, it seems when ever a sound question is asked no one seems bothered or have covered it a million times before. I asked the same question and had 300 views without an answer. Sorry pal but if its a sound question i fear youll have to ask in another forum as it seems taboo here. Im currently using my spare diamond and testing some other speakers inside it as there is so much speaker room its untrue, when i find , If i find a good one with a good fit ill pm you and let you know
cheers for now
let me know too when you finished testing please.. btw how much room is in there ? (dimensions)
We need a response from the pros at this.
cos im not ready to pop it open just yet lol

Can't you just post a guide here so everyone would know?
U can increase the sound level using tweaks in Advanced configuration v3.2 but sound quality will decrease .
i think this issue related to the hardware, not to the software issue.

usally with these things you will find if you dont get an answer
then the question has been asked a million times before and everyones
fed up of answering it.this question has been asked since the
diamond first became available.
best to use search first and if nothing comes up thats relevant
then post a question.
thanks for your help guys.
I would, as I am sure others to , be interested in a public posting if you find a speaker that fits and improves the sound quality.
perhaps this can help, woudnt try it myself tough

Nice, but it looks like a gsm phone. My cdma phone looks like I need to remove the entire internal back cover. It looks like one piece.

I disagree . The question of low sound has been from a software , tweak point of view but i asked about replacement speaker inside the phone itselfd from another phone as theres so mcuh room i could pack for a weekend away as well compared to many other phones
Did anybody try that mod or changed the speaker?
i d be curious to hear if it really improved the sound
I used to have a Samsung i730 (WM5) which had "SRS WOW", a software solution that helped with the perception of lousy sound. It did work quite well in making the speakers sound better. I don't know if that could be easily ported over.
Unfortunately, I no longer have that phone.
Not sure how this affects the quality.

I opened up my phone , and i opened the speaker also (first cutting step in the movie).
But next, after inspecting the main speaker housing it seems to have multiple connections wich lead to a black foil covering the housing.
I assume this foil is used as antenna for one or more of the phone's radio's/recievers.
So i assembled it back again without cutting a square trought the housing (step 2) as that would cut a large hole trough the antenna foil.
Volume gain from only opening the speaker (first step in the movie) is not noticable.

[Q] Nexus 10 Speakers

Hey there, I got my Nexus 10 today and I'm overall pleased with the device but something caught my attention and I was hoping that other Nexus 10 owners would help me. The device is fairly big and seemed to have large speakers at both the left and right, but I noticed that when I play music or watch something sound only comes out from the top of the speakers. So what, is the large speaker look just for show or is there a problem with my tablet? I'd appreciate any answers
I think it's just for show. Pretty sure the "actual" speaker area is 2 small "squares" at the top corners of the device. Not entirely sure if sound is supposed to travel through the entire speaker area on the sides of the tablet or not though, but it doesn't seem like it does :/

Sound doesnt just bend and get routed all throughout the speaker grill, that's not how sound waves work.To do something like this would be massively complicated to do and probably sound terrible. The only practical way to do it would be to use 3-5 speaker drivers per side. and actually have speakers all throughout the grill that you see.

Thanks for the information. But the question wasn't how it would be practical but how it is right now and unfortunatly I hear no sound comming out from the whole speaker grill, only the tops.

Thanks for the reply, that helped ease my worries a bit. I'm probably gonna wait for a few more replies until I'll be 100% sure about this.
Yeah, played some music and the sound is coming from the top corners.
Ya, speakers only on the top, similar to the Gnote 10.1. The guys at Powerbookmedic did a full tear down, and posted photos as they removed each part. The photos show what the speakers look like in the inside.
You can muffle the speakers quite a bit if you cover the top of the grill with your thumb, but anywhere else, it sound is unaffected.
Speaker issue with me as well - Only top left and right speaker works
Hi All,
I have the same issue where only sound is produced from top right and left corner of the tab. Spoke to the google customer service and they state that this is a defect. Can anyone please confirm if you are able to here sound from all ends. Thanks.
The speakers we see are indeed for show. The actual speaker is just a square at the top. Somewhere on here there's a picture of the internal components of the N10. If I find it I'll post a link.

Wow. I knew they were at the top but I did not think that was where the speakers were located. Those aren't even in the area of the grills...
Not complaining though. I still think the sound on this device is just fine for my taste.
How loud is the sound outputted? I'm coming from Asus tf700 and the sounds so weedy on that tab - any better?
Yes, it's much better than the TF700t. I had to use equilizer on the TF to get decent out. The N10 is much better right out of the box. No apps needed.

Speakers?

So there's leaks everywhere about the specs of this device, but one major thing no one seems to be talking about is the speaker setup. Do any of you guys think the 6t just might have a stereo pair? Or is it most likely going to have the same single downward firing speaker OnePlus has always used? It'd be awesome if OnePlus at LEAST made the ear piece double as a loud speaker, creating a stereo pair! But like I said, the speaker situation seems to be the only thing not leaked at this point. Thoughts?

Review this morning says no stereo. Earpiece speaker (side at the top) and single media speaker (bottom I think).
