[Q] and now I'm desperate - serious help needed - Hero, G2 Touch General

Ok, first of all I know there are a million threads about rooting, believe me, I've looked through all of them otherwise I wouldn't be here posting
Now, my problem is that I finally want to root my HTC-Hero to give the fella some new life. However, I have literally tried everything and nothing has worked so far.
I have tried:
Superoneclick
Androot
Z4
via command prompt (coupled with sdk)
Info about my phone:
firmware 2.1 - update 1
build number 3.36.405.1
so far there seems to be a consistent problem: su is found in the folder bin, superuser is placed as should in 'apps'. however, superuser doesn't show up in my app list (yes I've tried rebooting a million times) and via connectbot (terminal) it simply either denies access to su or does not seem to change $ to #. Furthermore, all programs (s.o.c. - androot & Z4root say 'you're rooted' .. however, this is not true).
I am seriously desperate at this point because I want to run cyanogenmod, find a nice theme and gain root access altogether to make my phone a bit snappier. All help is welcome (I'm willing to try anything at this point!).
Thanks in advance !!!

Ok. If either people can't or won't help.. can someone at least point me in the right direction ?? pretty please with lots of sugary **** on top

I think there was a big hoo-haa about HTC locking out root quite well on their 2.1 update. I've been rooted since 1.5 so I didn't pay too much attention, but I think you had to make a goldcard then downgrade to 1.5 in order to root the official 2.1. Its an older method, but as you said all the other methods didn't work, I guess that is your best bet.

Nope, I rooted with Androot from the Official 2.1 update. I used this guide: http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/s...de-Newbie-Guide-to-Install-VillainROM-amp-FaQ

He said he used androot with no success though, which is why I suggested goldcarding it.

Try this link same like the villain rom above , I would suggest you try the ADB way
its much more easier
http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/1930-How-To-Root-The-2.1-RUU-or-OTA-Update-For-The-Hero
Gold Card is not required anymore.. there are more easier ways like through ADB if you do it properly

Hi guys thanks for the suggestions. I've tried them but still without luck so far. I guess I will indeed try the goldcard method sometime soon because I think I'm running out of other options.
It's quite weird to say the least though since UniAndroot does say 'woot! you're rooted' but SU doesn't show up and in terminal I still can't get superuser access.
sigh

Uninstall your superuser first, then open androot and root again. The androot will install a superuser in your phone, then you can run it normally.
I had same problem problem, hopefully it helps you

already did that quite a few times..unfortunately there was no luck for me to be found there now I'm seriously thinking of just getting a new phone haha

Root help, i'm confused!

Hi there everyone,
I want to root my Desire HD, but I don't want to install any custom roms, radios, etc. I only want to root my HD so I can install apps that require root. I see no advantage in installing any custom ROMs, so I want to leave that alone.
What's the best way to go about this? I've found this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834427. Do I need to do anything else, except what is in this guide? I'm terrified of bricking my phone!
Could I brick my device if I made a mistake with the above guide, or S-OFF?
Thanks in advance,
Alex
Sorry for the question (no doubt it's been asked before), I've rooted my old HTC Hero before, found that easy, but this I'm confused!
Hi there. I'm actually quite a noob at all this since rooting is all new to me but seems you and I went after similar threads because I also read that guide to rooting the DHD at first. But after some further reading I discovered this is actually a much more difficult method of rooting (maybe because it's older?).
It will really, really help to look in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846248 as it explains so much and has many useful links.
But in answer to your question read this guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076 A much easier method of rooting =)
Good luck.

After I've ran that step - do I have permroot and I don't need to do anything else? I only want root, not custom ROM's.
I'm scared of doing the permroot, sounds like I'll break my phone if I even attempt it! Is there any way to ensure it will work?
Yeh you will be perma rooted if you follow the steps. About ensuring it will work, this is something I am now looking into myself. I'm getting the impression that it's possible to create a copy of the stock rom even without the perma root and using that to do a recovery in the event of a root failure. Though I would have thought perma root would have been needed to do a recovery in the first place....
I've got a thread below yours where I'm still trying to get a clear answer as to how to do all that. If I find out I'll let u know =P

By "if you follow the steps" - do you mean I only have to follow step 1 for perm root? Or more than that?
Sorry for all the questions, I really do appreciate your help, thanks!
And also - if it fails, the stock WWE RUU can be flashed to restore the phone, can't it?
EDIT: Followed step one, restarted device and everything - perm root stays. Thanks for all your help mate!

Go all way through these steps from 1.1 to 1.6. Once you've done 1.6 your phone should be rooted. Just download the terminal emulator from the market and do that last thing that is mentioned to test the perma rooting. If that works then your good.
Oh just so you know the temp root option in Visionary is apparently completely safe and won't harm nothing because it makes no changes to the system partition.
Not sure about the WWE RUU. I'm not sure it will be compatible with your current ROM (Only thing I do know is that if it's older then your current it won't work). Don't know how to flash it either tbh, that's something I ain't found out yet =P

[Q] Trouble Rooting and geting "SU" permissions Mytouch 4g. HELP!

This may sound stupid, but does anyone know how to root specifically a RED mytouch 4g?? Maybe the color is intimidating or something, but I have successfully rooted 6 mytouch 4g's and not run into any problems.. I spent a week on this one to no avail. Its running 2.2.1, software number 1.17.531.2, build number 1.17.531.2 CL277036. Is there a manual way without using visionary? It wont grant me permissions even after temp root. Thanks.
try using the gfree method which is in the development section. It seems thats the only way to root the newer mytouches.
Update: Tried every single forum that appeared in the first 10 pages of google for 50 different search terms, and frankly, I'm ****ing beat.. I found a few similar topic forums, but only ONE exact build number, and everything with the SAME EXACT SYMPTOMS.. Is there really nobody out there that has tackled this debockle? I'm not sure what to do at this point, am I doomed?? I'm not a noob with this phone, but I'm not a developer or a programmer either. Anyone got any alternative root methods, other that the visionary, or flashboot methods for the exact specs on my phone??
I'm having the same issue with my red MT4G, had it since Feb. 11 Was able to root but not able to get the s-off same build and software as yours. Help Please!

Thats weird, I achieved s=off, using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
But I can't get superuser permissions to flash the older version of the bootloader, or use gfree. What did you use to root it?
Are these MT4Gs completely stock and out of the box? When I rooted a friend's device, VISIONary wouldn't even temproot at first. He later uninstalled some app and tried VISIONary again and temproot stuck, so maybe something else on the device is getting in the way? Either that or HTC incorporated some fix, we'd need more people with brand new MT4Gs to confirm.
gfree issues
I seem to be having the same issue but when I go to "chmod 777 gfree" I get the ./gfree: permission denied error

Temp root with visionary then try again. Make sure fastboot is disabled before doing it. If it doesn't temp root try an older version of visionary. I used a combo of gfree method and visionary to get root and s off

EDIT: i replied to this while half asleep so figured i would be a little more clear.
i had the gfree permission denied error you got. so temp rooted with visionary(latest) but just froze up my phone. tried a older version and it temp rooted fine. went in to ADB got SU and threw the chmod command at it again and it went through.
hope this helps, not 100% sure it went through because of what i did but its worth a shot.

I've tried stock out of the box, used it for a while, got s=off, and it stuck even after factory resetting the phone between trying various different methods.
I agree with you regarding a patch of some sort on the software though. I've found this issue on 2 red htc glaciers now.
And although It's new, and shipped with 2.2.1, a buddy of mine goes through them like candy, and I've rooted every single one of them, no problem. even when they started shipping with 2.2.1 it wasnt an issue. So I think it's the newer manufacture build number etc with the red ones..

I have not tried that yet. Where can I find an older version of visionary? I looked for it on their website, but can't seem to find anything but the current version. (maybe I'm not looking hard enough) but.. Hopefully this will work
think this is the one i used. should be R11. may have been updated though, just got the link from another root method that says it r11.

I dont think It's working. I installed it, then reboot my phone, then ran the app, and At first It looked really REALLY unstable and kept flashing and doing weird things, so I rebooted again, ran it, and now it looks like it's not doing anything at all. How long did it take for your phone to say root successful, maybe I'm just being impatient.
thats what mine did. Just let it do its thing. If its to unstable to put in your commands use adb. I used adb from start to finish just cuz I find it easier.
Didn't take long. It did flash a black screen things like that. But just follow the guide you were using to a T and once you get temp root it shouldn't be a problem from there

I'm kicking myself in the face for not documenting my method I used. I finally did it, but in such a weird way, I'm not sure exactly WHAT it was. I installed visionary 11, uninstalled r14, uninstalled superuser, and ran r11. out of frustration, I scared up some old methods for rooting 2.2, and installed z4 root.. That made it to the second stage, but froze there. So I RE-installed visionary r14, achieved a temproot, and from there flashed gfree, etc.. and eventually stuck a permaroot with s=off.. I apologize for not figuring out exactly what I was doing wrong, or what I did right to solve the problem.

Rooted Then Updated Then Lost Root??

I recently rooted my atrix with superoneclick then i accidently updated then i belive i still had my root until i went to install a 3d theme then my phone crashed and wouldnt get past the at&t screen so i had to erase everything now on my phone i still have "super user" in my app draw but i cannot side load apps did i lose my root? what do i have to do to sideload apps again ? and i guess re root my phone
Yes i am a newb i am comming from IOS and an iPhone 4 please dont flame
If you updated, you mean 4.1.57, this is what I did to re-root when I lost mine after updating and SuperOneClick wouldn't work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013931
Ok so i read that so basically i have to flash my phone back to default then root again?
Yeap, that's exactly what I did, but in that same thread, I think someone else outlined using aRoot to go over SuperOneClick.

Also, if I need aRoot, can I run it over top SuperOneClick, or would it be best to unroot, run aRoot (or let the script root) and then run the script?
I appreciate all the hard work I've seen done in these forums and appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Yes you may safely run aroot over superoneclick. Aroot is the recommended method because it cleans up a lot of things Superroneclick does.

Yup the aRoot script is used in the GladiAtrix and possibly the GingerBlur rom as well. Either way. SOC is crap, not meant for atrix anyway. aRoot was written specifically for the Atrix. If you want to update to 4.1.57 read through the retain root thread over in atrix development.
after update, i can still see "su" installed in /system/bin/
I am unable to use it, getting permissioned denied message, any solutions ?

This has been explained many times. updating kills root, even though you still have superuser installed. to retain root you need to use the script in the development section when updating from 1.26 to 1.57. flash back to 1.26 and try again.

I just can't do this been at it for 8 Hours!!!

Ok, So i've spoke with 2 people from XDA Over the Phone today both tell me to do Sdk However I am not willing to increase the risk of bricking my phone. So please do not suggest sdk,

First, I've used VISIONary r14 many times on multiple Glaciers without problem. It should work just fine.
Second, setting up the SDK is not hard. Whoever gave you the idea that the SDK increases the risk of bricking your device is a moron. In fact, the SDK comes with some *very* useful tools that can help you recover if your phone starts running into problems. You don't need it to root your device, but it certainly won't hurt to at least install the tools/platform-tools (you don't need the entire SDK if you don't want it).
Third, I suggest using gfree instead of root.sh because it does much more. I also suggest flashing the engineering bootloader (instructions in same thread) so that you can use fastboot (this is one of those SDK tools I was talking about). Be careful when you enter that command or you could really screw yourself.
You Dont need SDK... Just download the EASY ADB as it works just Fine. Visionary R 14 Will give you a Perm Root, just use it with terminal emulator it is Easy. The Eng. Bootloader is a must have. You can also use the g free method either one is fine. Always remember that you can Always go back to stock if needed with the PD15IMG.zip.
i've tried the both the visionary and the gfree way and i think theres something up with the root.sh files or something happened to the roms themselves to not work properly though the gfree version worked 100%. and honestly if your not comfortable with ADB pushing then your going to miss out on alot of stuff for MT4G especially if you want to be cutting edge MT4g.

I logged in just so I could comment on this..it annoyed me that much. Being as I use to have an EVO and Sprint, the myTouch was EASIER to root then the EVO and is over all a much more capable phone once rooted. I used gfree and it was CAKE to root my phone...it is now fully carrier unlocked and basically brick proof due to the EBL 85.2007. I've been on the EVO forums (my roommate has one still and I'm his flasher) and there is a crap load of outdated ROMS and mods that if you aren't careful what you are mixing and matching you will end up with a bootlooped phone. Not the case with the myTouch everything here is kept well up to date and accurate. Not sure why you felt the need to post this but it was unneeded and well off topic.
/rant
OP use gfree ADB is as easy as 123... if you know how to read and type that is. Also you can do gfree via Terminal just place the files on your SD card and type from terminal to that location instead the thread I used had instructions to do it via ADB and Term, so go for it

Whatever fanboy! It was voted as one of the top five manufactured defective phones, (screen separations) cannot understand why you felt this would help in the thread. if you love your EVO go back to it and those forums!

OP use gfree ADB is as easy as 123... if you know how to read and type that is. Also you can do gfree via Terminal just place the files on your SD card and type from terminal to that location instead the thread I used had instructions to do it via ADB and Term, so go for it

[Q] Extremely confused Droid X GB - Need Help

So I've searched around the net, and am not 100% sure what to do. Here is my situation.
I "rooted" my phone awhile ago, or so I thought, but now despite having superuser and trying to do the fix and update for it, it doesn't work, and no app can gain root access, however when I try to run droid easy root, it says i'm already rooted.
I'm running GB with build # 4.5.1_57_DX5-35 (if that helps).
All I want to do is re-root or whatever and install a rom (miUi specifically) over the default gingerbread motoblur one. I'm on a Mac btw and don't know much about this stuff...Any help is appreciated.

use the zergrush (aka doomlord) method posted in my signature, should fix you right up
edit: eww just saw where you said you were on a mac, not sure if this will work for the mac, i know that superoneclick also now uses the zergrush method. perhaps there is a mac version of that.
I'll try it out using VMware fusion and my XP partition...Hopefully it works. Might have some questions on the process if there aren't detailed instructions. Thanks.
