[Updated!] Batch script to root the evo shift! Noob proof! - EVO Shift 4G General

Alright, I'm unbanned so now I can post the latest iteration of how your phone should be rooted by batch script.
Note: This script is actually still being developed so if I break something in the script by adding something else it will be fixed. I don't have a shift to test on and I don't have any money. From what I know, my friend did indeed test this and it's working 100% so now lets move on to features.
FEATURES:
Wimax backup and restore - after the root process/misc.img flash
MD5 hash check for misc.img before and after.
Temproot
Hboot flash
Choices to ask what you want (Y/N questions)
asks if you already rooted with fre3vo and if so, takes you to the reroot script.
Credits?
OTAking71 and scaryghoul. (Hboot patch)
Otaking again just for beta testing my script on his spare shift.
Agrabren for releasing fre3vo
Me for writing this batch file from nothing but the instructions in the hboot downgrade thread.
Download link?

Github:https://github.com/xIndirect/Fre3atlast
Note: This script is made by me and may not be modified, reposted, or shared without my permission.
Reason I don't want you to modify it is because of the fact that I don't want anyone to break the script which can break the phones! Remember: Batch is very particular about function calling!
Code:
Changelog:
Updated to 2.7.2
Corrected output for link thats echoed into a text file.
Changed how it provides download links due to wget not cooperating correctly.
Added automatic function of checking MD5
added install.bat script for post-downgrade install of z4root and visionary
added automatic downloading of misc.img if bad md5
added downloading of choice between PG06IMG.zip or the exe RUU to downgrade
added wget to allow for downloading of the aforementioned files.
added device check
maybe some other slight things I'm forgetting
Quick developers note:
Everyone, I wrote Fre3AtLast as an improvement on the original script since it had some un-needed lines in it. I am not going to tolerate anyone else acting childish over this and the difference between devnull's and my script. It's just a more efficient way other than his and I still give him credit for giving me the original idea to create/improve on his script.

Wimax Backup script doesn't quite work, but everything else seems golden.
Add a `mkdir /sdcard/WiMax;` before the DD and you'd probably be good to go.

Figured I mucked up somewhere in the wimax backup script. I''ll add it really quick

Awesome!!!!! worked great!

what are the steps on running this other than having a GB shift that's not rooted temp or perm ?

You just have to extract to your desktop *in its own folder preferably* then you just run the Fre3atlast.bat and poof; you're rooted.

VIDEO
You wouldn't have a video or a step by step guide going through this would you.

Thanks! Worked flawlessly! Unlike a different one I fought with for two days. lol
Cheers!

Syanptic, you dont need one. It tells you what you do by asking you. Just be honest to the script and your rooted

sounds easy...
It sounds easy, but personally when possible I like to see what I'm about to do, yah know see the step by step to make sure I know whats going on before I dive in.
In the end, I'm just paranoid I'm gonna brick my phone. and hearing "its just that simple" isn't all that comforting for something that took a long time for people to work out.
Also does this requires froyo?

it tells you what its about to do by confirming if you want to do it. Perhaps if you ended up using the script or even reading it, you would have learned that. Im not being a **** but people need to learn to read. Also, it is just that simple. It had to be figured out but the implication of it is much easier than having to find it as is true with everything else.

Yeah, I got that, in fact I opened the .bat in notepad.
lets see what instructions it outputs.
-have you rooted before? y/n
-clearing cache
-if the misc.img MD5 as well as the the original MD5. (I am assuming its outputting a code sum to check if the file is good)
-there are only 2 times this will stop... run? y/n
-if you want to continue hit y, if not n
-this is happening if you want to flash Hboot misc.img to be able to downgrade. -this is from saying N to the first choice (i assume this references the have you rooted before question
-congrats, your rooted, thank people
now I may have missed something, but that's not exactly explanation. Also no where in this thread does it say if you can or can't use this in gingerbread.
Your response is why I typically avoid forums and rooting, people offer help and then chastise you and or call you stupid for asking questions. If you think its a dumb question that you don't feel you need to answer just don't respond. Its better off that way than insulting people that came to you for help.
Clearly, I am hesitant about rooting my phone. I know enough to know that if you do something wrong when trying to root a device you can brick it. You can't really blame me for wanting to understand what I'm about to do. Also, saying I would know if I ran it is pointless, the reason I asked the question is because I wanted to know what it did BEFORE I ran it.
I am a little confused at this point from all the different posts saying you need this or you need that or beware if your using this so on and so forth. Yeah, I'm not a master programmer, its not my field. I don't have all the time in the world to figure this out on my own. If HTC would just open up root I would probably use that. But that's not the case so I'm here. Have some freaking courtesy.

I agree that anyone rooting should read the downgrade information provided by scary, but tbh i wish i would have used the one click root when i first started. I have neither the time nor inclination to learn anymore about rooting than what it take to make my phone to run awesomely, and there are many root-users just like me.
im not going to run a batch on my phone unless its been tested and verified on an actual shift.

Indirect is just mad that he broke his hand
If you haven't already I'd read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255474 Scary does a good job of explaining what you're doing. You might actually find that you prefer to do the whole process manually. It's not hard, it's just a matter of following the instructions. It's very satisfying to root manually, you really feel that you've earned it.
And to answer your question, the actual perm rooting does require you to be on Froyo but the downgrade from Gingerbread to Froyo is part of this process.

Jesusice is right, I'm pissed that i broke my hand. He's mad thats hes married and not getting laid as much as me. :3
Anyway, this has been tested and verified on a shift, multiple actually. I think that if you cant use this script, it's user-error as it does a decent job in explaining. It asks if you rooted before, if no, it roots, flashes hboot (after confirmation for flashing hboot as well) then it even backs up wimax for you.

If i'm not mistaken this downgrades you and also roots you. Also you have to take risk if you wanna root your phone. Its a big plunge yes but out of all the comments not one person has bricked their phone and also this has been tested many times before. If you too scared to do this than you might not want to root your phone in the first place

Virgin rom.

I have looked and looked and maybe im just usnig the wrong words in seach but i havenet been able to find anything yet. I am looking for a virgin 1.5 rom that i can use to start freh and make my own rom to flash to my phone. Basically what I am looking for is a rom (not the RUU that puts a factory default on it) but the actual factory original rom before anyone has taken anytihg out or put on there own themes.
I have looked and looked. I find all kinds of roms to flash to my phone but all of them have been violated in some way or anouther. and although they are nice i would rather do it myself than use someone elses.
If this is already discussed somewhere please link me to it and i am sorry but i havent found it.
Thanx in advance for any help anyone can give me.
This might be what your looking for..

Check in the sticky wiki for available roms
Yeah me too! Damn all these promiscuous ROMs
Wouldn't doing an RUU and then rooting give you what you want?

This gives you gumbo wich has stuff removed and added I want what gumbo based his off of not what gumbo did too it so to speak. Not that I dont like gumbo but he removed things I want virgin before that.
I have checked all of the roms on the wiki page and all have something done to them.
Where is the one that says here is the stock rom from sprint with nothing done to it.

No, doing the ruu from what I understand installs the factory original to the phone. I want it before it goes into the phone so I can modify it before it goes to the phone. Also I would like to re install the rom whenever I want but using the RUU i would have to use the RUU next time and the update it again.

HeHeHe. Thats funny!!!
This has to be out there. Basically I want a rom that if I flashed it to the phone would be no different than if I bought a new phone from sprint and turned it on.
You cant tell me everyone that roots their phone wants other than stock rom on it.
@ cammel, I agree with justinisyoung
theres not much more to it.
just flash an RUU and root it. this will provide the base files you need for your stock rom.

Ok, say I do the RUU how do I get the rom off the phone to edit it?
I think what youre talking about doing would be creating a signed update zip. While I dont know how to do it those are probably the key words you'd need to search to find the answers youre looking for. Hope that helps!

To my understanding the RUU is not a ROM.
It is a return to factory default. You would typically use this option when you needed to take your phone in for repair to the store or to get it back to stock.
So after your run the RUU, you would then root your phone using the method of your choosing, and then you would have what you are asking for.
When you download the RUU, there is a file called rom.zip
That's what you're looking for.

Yes you are correct that the phone would be back to original. But then how do i get that to my computer to edit it?
Also with this method I would have to re root my phone.
Plus Ive heard that you can brick your phone with the RUU with a 110 error thats unbrickable. not exactly fond of that idea.

In th rom.zip there is a bunch of img files. im guessing if i tried to use that it would error out on me. I need the one with like sytem fioles and stuff I can edit.
You cant tell me this isnt out there. People have been modding this rom since it came out. So there has to be an untouched original somewhere to wich you can base your work off of. Otherwise that would meen everyone bases there work off of other peoples and never start from scratch. Is that really the case? Am I the first that wants a fresh rom to start with and build from there?
Contained in the image files is what you're look for.

Ok I have tried extracting info out of the img files with powerISO, magicISO, imageburn, IrfanView, XnVview and Iso buster. But all of them say it is the wrong format.
I have seen multiple threads that link to a how to extract the files using unyaffs and ubuntu but I dont have ubuntu.
So I now have two questions:
First
Is it possible to extract files from an img file using window (windows 7 to be exact) and if it is possible what program would I use.
Second
Is there a tutorial out there Im missing?
Sorry If im being a pain in the A** about this and I usually figure stuff out on my own but this one is really givin me a headache. I have been working for three days on this one and its really getting to me.
If anyone can help me I would Appreciate it.
And thanx to everyone that has tried to help so far. Every time I get an answer that doesnt work it just meens Im one step closer to finding one that does so thanx everyone.

Here is a good place to get started.
What you're interested atm is the unyaffs program.
Google and forum search are really useful tools and the answers to your questions are out there. Just not packaged nice and neat like you would want.
Here's the jist of what you need to get started.
1. Android SDK
2. Java JDK
3. android zip signing tool
4. unyaffs utility
5. RUU
6. start RUU
7. let it go all the way just before the point where it actually starts to flash your phone.
8. check your computers temp folder for the system.img
9. unpackage it using unyaffs
10. enjoy naked young virgin
11. zip devirgined rom back up
12. sign it
13. flash it
14. fix bugs, rinse, repeat
15. try and search next time.
16. sorry about the crankiness, had a lousy day at work.
hope my step-by-step while not overly detailed was helpful.
are you looking for AOSP? or do you want Sense UI and all that stuff? RUU Includes Sense

Ok I understand your cranky, but maybe you should give a person the benefit of the doubt before assuming they are an idiot. Remember what they say, when you assume you make an ass out of you and Uma Thurman.
So I rooted my phone on Friday. I then proceeded to download every rom on the site, and see what all there was available. I'm guessing the same thing everyone does when they first root it. By Saturday morning, after reading a bunch of stuff on here, I decided I was going to do My own mods to the rom. Yes the others out there are nice but they are not mine.
The first thing I did was to make My own animated boot screen (I decided on a naked pink female android instead of the stupid green one that comes stock. So I worked for hours and hours on that. Finally got it all done, uploaded it and it didn't work. (Come to find out the program I was using to make the GIF, "Easy GIF Animator", which I use for websites all the time, was putting extra stuff into the header that the HTC didn't know how to deal with. Just use gimp to make it and you are fine.) So now I have a working animated boot sequence of my own. (All from searching.)
Out of all of the themes I had seen done so far, I really liked the Aloysius because of the way the launch bar was made. I wanted to do that. So I researched some more and found out how to edit the APK files in the framework so I could change stuff. So I went about changing all the stuff I wanted to change. The Icons, the little Icons at the top, the buttons on the bottom. Anything I could change.
Yeah me, I have a bunch of stuff now that I can make an update file with so I can update my phone. I throw it all in a file, name it update, and flash it, but it won't work. After some more searching I find out that I have to sign the file before I can update it to the phone. This wasn't an issue before with the boot screen so I search find out how to do that and, wa la, I have a new theme all mine. (All from searching.)
So then I decide, well everyone else is adding and removing files, couldn't be that hard, so I did some searching and what do you know it isn't hard at all. So I added the programs I always have on my phone, and now when I flash it, it is all ready to go. Wee, now we are talking. (All from searching.)
Then I start playing with some of the apps, and realize that any app that sends out an sms by itself wouldnt send text messages. (IE: sms bomber, SMS my location, wavesecure) the program acts like it is working but then doesn't actually send the message. So I do some more searching. Come to find out Most of the roms on the site have stuff removed. It must be one of the apps removed or settings that were changed has something to do with it. Worked before installing the rom, don't work after installing the rom must be something in the rom, that or something I did to the rom afterward. So I do a fresh install of Aloysius and add sms bomber and it won't work. Must be Aloysius. (some from searching some from trial and error.)
So I decide I am just going to get the original rom, since I don't need any of the stuff in Aloysius because I have replaced most of it with my own anyway, and the apps I like in it, I can just add myself. So I search and search for a Virgin rom. Can't find one anywhere. Figure well maybe I can just pull the rom from my phone by copying the directory structure. So I re-flash my original backup and try pulling the files that way. I get them off the phone, add them to a zip file, name it update, and put it on my phone and go to flash it back to see if it works. Epic Fail. After searching some more I find out that you have to have a script to tell it what to install and where so I learn through searching how to make a update-script file, throw it in the META-INF folder in its right place zip the two folders up sign them and put them on my phone. In case you were wondering it didn't work. come to find out, after doing some searching you cant do that. Maybe I should have searched that one before just jumping in on that one. Eh, live and learn I guess.
So I search and search for the not so ever present virgin rom. Apparently, if it is out in the wild, it is a well hidden secret cause I can't find it. (still cant) Finally after hours and hours of searching, I give up and ask for help finding it. Yes thats right I asked for help. Well that ask didn't exactly garner me a here is a link just follow it and you can download your prize. No instead I find out that it isn't out there. Not in rom form at least.
There are ones that are close but nothing completely virgin. Why waste my time on those when They might have something I need removed and I don't even know it. Finally ABCDFV tells me its in the RUU in the Rom file Packed into an IMG file. Not exactly a rom but close enough that, I'm guessing, it's the closest I will get. So now All I have to do is unpack it and be done with it. Yeah me. I have unpacked stuff before this should be a synch. Mind you that was at 2 pm.
So I use every program I can think of that are used for opening IMG files, and none of them work so I search the internet and find butt loads more, but they don't work either so I do more searching and find out that the IMG files that are packed in the roms are special and can't be opened in the normal ways.
So after more searching I find many tutorials on how to unpack the files but all of them are in ubuntu. Well I'm running windows 7 so that won't work. I search and search and can't find a windows program to save my life so I reserve myself to having to use Linux.
I go to my back room and find an old 700 mhz computer, download ubuntu, and install it. Get all of my files, take them to the other computer, and start reading the tutorials. This is when I realize that I have no freaking clue what I am doing in Linux. Sure I have played with it but I don't use it like this. I get to the first command in all of the tutorials and it says type "gcc -o unyaffs unyaffs.c" but not one of them say where to type it. (come to find out it's in terminal. would it really kill the people that made the tutorials to put that little tidbit itn there. go ahead look not one of them I saw asid open terminal thay just say type this) so I go back and search that to find out. after I finally get that figured out, I realize that not one of these tutorials on how to do this is complete. Sure they might be complete to someone that knows UBUNTU but not to me. After hours and hours of searching and trying and failing I finally get fed up with UBUNTU. That was at about 9 o clock.
I disconnect the computer, take it outside, and shoot the damn thing with my 12 gauge. That's right I shot it. No joke. No it didn't help me to unpack the file. No it wasn't logical, reasonable or even rational, but damn it I felt better. Seeing them little green pieces of pcb flying, and knowing I would never be defeated by this computer or operating system again was almost blissful.
I came back in, and through utter frustration and dismay, haven been beaten by a fricken IMG file I again ask for help. That is when ABCDFV showed me the link to the X86 version of unyaff. Yes, finally my worries are over. I download it drag the system.IMG file to it and it pops up a message. "cygwin1.dll file is missing." You have got to be fu**ing kidding me. So back to searching I go. Come to find out it is a file used on windows machines so you can run Linux programs. I JUST SHOT LINUX AND IT IS COMING BACK TO HAUNT ME, I KNOW IT NOW. So I go to the website for cygwin and wouldn't you know it, there isn't a file like that on their server just an exe file that loads something. Screw it, I'll load it. So I download it install it, which mind you it says will fix the problem. And guess what, it didn't fix it.
So after searching and searching I find a website that has it. Sure there are about 50 gazillion that had it but I wanted one that didnt charge me, or want me to install there stupid program to get it. I get the file and install it.
30 seconds later and I am looking at the ever so hard to find, "virgin rom". Well not exactly. It is not a rom yet but I have everything else I need to make the rom so Might as well be the rom. I make my update-script put it in with it, zip it, sign it and send it to my phone.
I flash it to my phone, the whole time it is going, I'm just praying it will work. Verifying, verifying, Come on, copying files, yes its working! Finished. I can't fu**ing believe it. After everything, I finally have it, my own virgin rom. Yes, yes, oh freakin yes, everything is right in my world again.
Only one thing left to do, reboot phone. I hit the reboot and it blinks off. A second later HTC. A minute later Still HTC. It's ok sometimes when you flash a new rom it takes a while. 15 minutes later still HTC. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE FREAKIN KIDDING ME. So I reboot and get the same thing. Apparently there is something I am missing. Don't know what yet, I'm sure something I read will hold the answer, but I sure as sh*t aint doing it tonight.
That is when I came back on. I figured the least I could do was to thank ABCDFV for helping me get this far. That is when I seen your post. To tell you the truth, It pi**ed me off. Where do you come off telling me to do a little searching and I can find it. That is all I have been doing the last three days is searching. and not finding Sh*t might I add. there is a whole bunch of stuff but nothing that directly relates to what I need.
I dont think I am doing that bad either, I have taught myself all of this in the matter of four days by serching. I know people that have been rooting their Phones since G1 and dont know half of what I know now. And I have only been doing it for 4 days. So I dont think I am doing that bad. Especially since I have only had to ask one question and then a follow up.
Apparently you were born with all of the HTC Hero information and never needed to ask anyone a question about it ever, and that is all well and good, but people like me have to ask every once in a while for a little help.
I thought that is what this forum was for.
I am sorry if I am not another script kiddy that is ok with other people making stuff and me just throwing it on my phone and calling it my own.
I am sorry if I don't want to say to someone look what someone else did and I was able to install it on my phone just like your 11 year old neighbor can do to his phone by reading a tutorial or watching it on youtube. (Sh*t I never even thought of youtube. Probly somthing on there I could have watched instead of reading it. Oh well maybe next time.)
I am sorry if I want to do something from scratch instead of using other peoples work.
I am sorry if I want to be able to say look what I did.
Maybe you are Ok with that, maybe you're not, But I sure as hell am not. And I don't know you from Adam. You may be the person that first came out with all of the stuff that makes this possible, or you may be just another script kiddy happy to install others work, I don't know. I am sure after I am done here I will find out, but to do that I have to search and I'm not into that right now.
But next time you want to go off on a rant to someone, maybe you shouldn't assume they haven't done anything, and are just looking for a handout. Maybe you should just help them. Maybe If someone would have said in the beginning of my thread that the virgin rom doesn't exist, and you have to rip it from the RUU and there is no other way I wouldn't have spent the last 24 hours trying to figure it out.
This isn't my first time at a rodeo you know, just my first time on this bull. I am a member of many forums for many different things. And usually people come to me for help cause they are too lazy to search, and I would understand If I would have asked what is a rom an how do I root my phone. Or something simple covered hundreds of times in the forums elseware but I didn't.
Not only did I ask for help with something that is obviously nonexistent or close to it but I asked for a link so I could go in the right direction. I didnt just automatically ask where is it and what do I do with it. I want to learn so I can teach others. I want to learn so when someone asks why won't this work, I can tell them why, instead of "I don't know, it just don't work" I want to understand what I am doing, not just do it for the sake of doing it.
So as far as your crankiness goes, Sorry if I made you cranky, but maybe if you are cranky cause someone wants help, you shouldn't be on a forum that is for helping people. Because it is just going to make you more cranky. Just a thought.
So that is it for my rant. Sorry it was so long but I had to get that out. Now onto what I came here for originally :

Ok I understand your cranky but maybe you should give a person the benefit of the doubt before assuming they are an idiot. Remember what they say, when you assume you make an ass out of you and Uma Thurman.
So I rooted my phone on Friday. I then proceeded to download every rom on the site and see what all there was available. I'm guessing the same thing everyone does when they first root it. By Saturday morning after reading a bunch of stuff on here I decided I was going to do My own mods to the rom. Yes the others out there are nice but they are not mine.
The first thing I did was to make My own animated boot screen (I decided on a naked pink female android instead of the stupid green one that comes stock. So I worked for hours and hours on that. Finally got it all done uploaded it and it didn't work. (Come to find out the program I was using to make the GIF, Easy GIF Animator, which I use for websites all the time, was putting extra stuff into the header that the HTC didn't know how to deal with. just use gimp to make it and you are fine.) So now I have a working animated boot sequence of my own. (All from searching.)
Out of all of the themes I had seen done so far I really liked the Aloysius because of the way the launch bar was made. I wanted to do that. So I researched some more and found out how to edit the APK files in the framework so I could change stuff. So I went about changing all the stuff I wanted to change. The Icons the little Icons at the top, the buttons on the bottom. Anything I could change.
Yeah me I have a bunch of stuff now that I can make an update file with so I can update my phone. I throw it all in a file name it update and flash it but it won't work. after some more searching I find out that I have to sign the file before I can update it to the phone. This wasn't an issue before with the boot screen so i search find out how to do that and wa la I have a new theme all mine. (All from searching.)
So then I decide well everyone else is adding and removing files couldn't be that hard so I did some searching and what do you know it isn't hard at all so I added the programs I always have on my phone and now when I flash it, it is all ready to go. Wee now we are talking. (All from searching.)
Then I start playing with some of the apps and realize that any app that sends out an sms by itself wound send text messages.
So I decide I am just going to get the original rom, since I don't need any of the stuff in Aloysius because I have replaced most of it with my own anyway and the apps I like in it I can just add myself. So i search and search for a Virgin rom. Can't find one anywhere. Figure well maybe I can just pull the rom from my phone by copying the directory structure. So I re-flash my original backup and try pulling the files that way. I get them off the phone add them to a zip file name it update and put it on my phone and go to flash it back to see if it works. Epic Fail. After searching some more I find out that you have to have a script to tell it what to install and where so I learn through searching how t make a update-script file, throw it in the META-INF folder in its right place zip the two folders up sign them and put them on my phone. In case you were wondering it didn't work. come to find out after doing some searching you cant do that. Maybe I should have searched that one before just jumping in on that one. Eh live and learn I guess.
So I search and search for the not so ever present virgin rom. Apparently, if it is out in the wild, it is a well hidden secret cause I can't find it. Finally after hours and hours of searching, I give up and ask for help finding it. yes thats right I asked for help.
So I use every program I can think of that are used for opening IMG files and none of them work so I search the internet and find butt loads more but they don't work either so I do more searching and find out that the IMG files that are packed in the roms are special and can't be opened in the normal ways.
So after more searching I find many tutorials on how to unpack the files but all of them are in ubuntu. Well I'm running windows 7 so that won't work. I search and search and can't find a windows program to save my life so I reserve myself to having to use Linux.
I go to my back room and find an old 700 mhz computer download ubuntu and install it. get all of my files take them to the other computer and start reading the tutorials. this is when I realize that I have no freaking clue what I am doing in Linux. Sure I have played with it but I don't use it like this. I get to the first command in all of the tutorials and it says type "gcc -o unyaffs unyaffs.c" but not one of them say where to type it. (come to find out it's in terminal) so I go back and search that to find out. after I finally get that figured out I realize that not one of these tutorials on how to do this is complete. Sure they might be complete to someone that knows UBUNTU but not to me. After hours and hours of searching and trying and failing I finally get fed up with UBUNTU. That was at about 9 o clock.
I disconnect the computer and take it outside and shoot the damn thing with my 12 gauge. That's right I shot it. No joke. No it didn't help me to unpack the file. No it wasn't logical, reasonable or even rational, but damn it I felt better. seeing them little green pieces of pcb flying and knowing I would never be defeated by this computer again was almost blissful.
I came back in and through utter frustration and dismay. haven been beaten by a fricken IMG file I again ask for help. That is when ABCDFV showed me the link to the X86 version of unyaff. yes finally my worries are over. I download it drag the system.IMG file to it and it pops up a message. "cygwin1.dll file is missing." You have got to be fu**ing kidding me. So back to searching I go. Come to find out it is a file used on windows machines so you can run Linux programs. I JUST SHOT LINUX AND IT IS COMING BACK TO HAUNT ME I KNOW IT NOW. So i go to the website for cygwin and wouldn't you know it there isn't a file like that on their server just an exe file that loads something . screw it ill load it so i download it install it, which mind you it says will fix the problem. and guess what, it didn't fix it.
So after searching and searching I find a website that has it. Sure there are about 50 million that had it but I wanted one that didnt charge me or want me to install there stupid program to get it.
I flash it to my phone the whole time it is going I'm just praying it will work. Verifying, verifying Come one copying files, yes its working! finished. I can't fu**ing believe it. After everything I finally have it my own virgin rom.
So I reboot same thing. Apparently there is something I am missing. Don't know what yet, I'm sure something I read will hold the answer but I sure as sh*t aint doing it tonight.
That is when I came back on. I figured the least I could do was to thank ABCDFV for helping me get this far. that is when I seen your post. To tell you the truth It pi**ed me off. Where do you come off telling me to do a little searching and I can find it. That is all I have been doing the last three days is searching.
I dont think I am doing that bad either I have taught myself all of this in the matter of four days by serching. I know people that have been rooting there Phones since G1 and dont know half of what I know now and I have only been doing it for 4 days.
I am sorry if I don't want to say to someone look what someone else did and I was able to install it on my phone just like your 11 year old neighbor did to his phone.
I am sorry if I want to do something from scratch instead of using other peoples work.
I am sorry if I want to be able to say look what I did.
Maybe you are Ok with that maybe you're not But I sure as hell am not. And I don't know you from Adam. Odin help pls

Im getting everything on my computer ready to flash the stock rom back to my phone in case I do something to it. My question is about the di18file download. In the directions say to rename and take off the md5. I have no clue how to rename and take it off. I downloaded it and saved it to the desktop and when I choose to rename it doesn't have the md5 at the end. If I put the file in Odin it has the md5 and all the example pics don't have it at the end. How to I get it off? The only thought I had was when I go to save the file I can change it from md5 to all files? Would that work? Thanks
You probably need to turn off the windows option of hiding extensions for known file types.
Sounds like you just need to enable what leatherneck6017 said.
Also, you don't need to rename the file. Flashing it as is will work just fine.
Ok so it's fine with the md5 at the end? I just found the option to disable that. Thank you.

You still need to rename it by removing ".md5" from the end of the filename.
Sent from my Epic using XDA App.
No need to remove the extention. Just make sure you have the galaxy s drivers installed and autoreboot the only box checked. As a tip, I had issues with flashing with my sd card in. Took it out and odin worked w/o issue.

Ok so I went to download it and hit save. I saved it to my desktop and took off .md5 and its now saved to my desktop. It says it is a TAR ARCHIVE File now. Is it ok to use now? If I put it in Odin it doesn't have the .md5 now. Is TAR ARCHIVE ok? That's just how my computer saved it cause I use a program called pea zip. An I good to go now? Thanks for all your help guys I appreciate it?
Yes, you are good to go. However, I agree that it was unnecessary to remove the md5. It will work either way. Odin will accept both extensions and changing the extension does not change the content of the file, nor how it is handled.

Sounds more like he shouldnt be messing with odin flashing and custom roms.
Mind your own business. I've used Odin before just not the di18 so it didn't say to rename it. If your not going to help out don't post. I'm tired of,people like you. There's a lot of great people on here that help out and then there are people like you. I know I don't know a whole lot but you learn from asking and you have to start somewhere so sorry I'm not a genius like you.
Just flashed stock to my old epic before mailing it back, u do not have to remove the md5 extension of the filename, odin supports that type of file
And ignore the critics, they had questions too, no one was born just knowing this stuff, and I'm sure they still have the occasional question from time to time, just ignore their posts
Sent from my Epic 4g
Yeah your right man thanks. Yeah I saw some people say you have to rename and other say you don't. So you just downloaded it and flashed it. I didn't think it would make a difference if you renamed it it's still the same file. Thanks for your help.

you also learn a great deal from searching and reading and trying to figure thing out for yourself, infact you learn a great deal more if you dont get an answer handed to you, so while you may think its cool or hip to snap back at off handed comments perhaps you should read more and talk less. in fact use google(since this is an android forum section) and learn to read and research before you decide to be just another useless **** that expects answers for simple thing without doing any of the research himself.
Plan and simple you asked a stupid question and got a stupid answer, maybe next time you'll think a little for yourself prior to speaking.
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+to+display+extentions
and as a side note,. you don't learn from asking you learn from asking AND researching on your own, otherwise you're just being spoon-fed and will expect that treatment all the time.
Your the only one that had a problem with my question so f*** off. I wish I lived in ny so I could meet up with you and let u know how stupid I am. I have searched it but then again ibdont have to explain myself to you. Mods can you pls lock this thread I have my answer now and I'm tired of this asshole. Thanks to all who helped.
Hey *art3mis-nyc* this reply is for you.... I agree with musclehead - you need to seriously mind your own business!!! What the hell do you think a forum is for??? TO ASK A QUESTION!!!!!! So NO PEOPLE SHOULD *NOT* GOOGLE THEIR QUESTIONS ALL THE TIME SO YOU NEED TO MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS! Musclehead couldnt have said it any better himself! How do you think people learn oh wait I guess everyone cant be as smart as you although you cant seem to answer his questions anyhow all you wanna do is bash him so your dumb ass probably doesnt even know what odin is so I think you should just take your smart ass some where else and out of this forum!!!!!!!!!

Quick rooting question

Just a quick question...
Is the root method that's stickied on the top of the mt4g development page (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996).... and the method found on theunlockr.com (http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/10/how-to-gain-permanent-root-and-s-off-on-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-htc-glacier/).. essentially the same things?
I tried to follow the method stickied in the development page and was left feeling like an idiot. The unlockr instructions, however, seem to be a bit more dummy friendly.
Any help would be appreciated.. thanks!
Please post questions in Q&A section.
BTW:
Disclaimer/Advice/Humble Opinion:
My advice (without trying to hurt anyone's feelings too much) is DON'T ROOT. I would suggest you familiarize yourself with everything (Linux, ADB, XDA, Google) before diving in head first.
Despite popular belief, having root does NOT in fact make you cooler.
Way too many new users are trying to root because they think it's cool or heard it's cool. Well; it's not cool to be a n00b and attempt root. You need to learn your device first.
If you don't know how to perform a Nandroid backup, or restore a previous ROM backup, flash updates, install custom ROM's, boot into Safe mode, Mount R/W, run shell commands or Terminal Emulator etc, then you should NOT root. You should browse the forums here, read, read and re-read everything until you know it well. Google search related topics. Exhaust all available avenues, then ask questions. After you've executed all of these options you might consider rooting and starting to tinker with your device.
If you don't even know what some of the things are that were mentioned, then you should absolutely NOT root your phone. You will likely brick or screw up your phone and then be right back here begging for help in a new thread most definately created by you out of haste or costing [insert phone manufacturer/carrier here] money by sending your phone back and asking for a replacement simply because you had no idea what you were doing. Hmm... two very useless replies.
CB, take a look at how many of the threads posted here in the "General" section are questions. Also, why are you so adamant on having "noobs" not root their phones? What concern is it to you whether someone bricks their own device or not? Isn't that what this forum is for? Did you one day wake up with all the android modding knowledge you have now? I dont think so.. And just because your useless warning thread got stickied up top, doesn't make it a useful thread.
Sorry for the rant.. I just sense that this forum is turning more and more into snobs trying to police what people say or ask for. It's a discussion forum geared toward helping people.. not a country club for snobs trying to remain on their high horses.

THis is the method i have used and its very easy to follow...once you do it, it will almost seem to easy, but that is what it is...its very easy to root your phone...follow this guide...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225

If you read my post carefully you'll notice that it says advice. It is simply an opinion. If you don't like my advice or my opinion why don't you just shut up and move on.
This forum is about helping people. Helping also includes preventing. Preventing people from breaking their device and avoiding a recovery, especially if it can be avoided.

....or you can just stop trying to be the savior of this forum and offering useless advice that's clearly common sense to people that are on this forum to begin with.
I'm pretty certain that no one here asked for your personal "advice".. and btw, your useless advice was "DON'T ROOT". Now, how does "DON'T ROOT" help in a thread asking for help rooting? Just doesn't make sense. So instead of pretending like you're this high and mighty android god that has so much to offer.. you should just lay low until someone actually asks for your help. Or maybe, you might get lucky and a "noob" will start a thread asking "Should I Root?". Then you can jump in with your then applicable advice of "DON'T ROOT".
Now, moving on. Can anyone else offer any info as to whether the two methods listed above are the same?
Thanks.

Please post questions in the Q&A section.
Ha ha @darkpaniel thats funny. Hence why i just come here and read the posts and not bother asking any questions due to the fact that I dont want a dumb response to my question from someone that thinks they are god and knows everything about android.
Which i'm sure like you said they were a noob once as well.
Hope you got the help you needed and good luck with everything.
I'm sorry.. but since when do we have unofficial forum moderators? I wasn't aware of this position until this CBConsultation guy came around.
CB: Here's a scenario for you....

dad: no, here's my advice.. just walk, don't ride a bicycle, you can fall off and get hurt...
CB, I feel sorry for your (hopefully) unborn children..

Thanks, Jay21fire. Could you imagine this forum without all the helpless know-it-all snobs? I was part of the G1 forum before this.. and I don't remember the people there being half as snobby as here. Maybe that's because then.. there werent so many know-it-all snobs, who's only worth is to know everything about android.. who has to come on these forums and rule the internet. Sad, really.
Anyway, I'm sure I'll find the help I'm looking for. As many useless snobs there are on this forum, I know there's even more humble, helpful people.. so I'm not concerned.
ok...i have already posted the link that is pretty much the same as the unlocker link, just from here...they are not the same thing...the first link is more of a deeper root, which would allow for the flashing of roms, that while based on the same phone...may not be tmobile specific, the second link or the link i had posted, is just a plain ol root
can we now stop the bashing since your question has been answered. i dont agree with CBC on the disclaimer, but that doesnt mean im going to start bashing him to no end...just not needed and a waste of a thread
Fair enough.
Thanks for your help. And mods (actual mods), if you wanna go ahead and lock this thread down, please go ahead and do so.
actually, i just read through the unlocker version and its missing a step...you need to install visionary first before you run the script and all that fun stuff...pretty much what your going to do is download and install visionary (you will need to google it and install it via astro file manager or the like since it is not on the market)...install android terminal explorer via the market and the root files from here...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225...unzip those files using winrar and place them on the root of your sdcard. after doing all this, run visionary, and do the temp root...once it says it was succussful (takes a little bit), run the script listed in that same thread (steps 3a - 3d...reboot the phone, and run visionary again, but select attempt permaroot...once it reboots go ahead and make sure you have root access...you can easily check this by loading HBOOT, by holding vol down and power til the phone turns on and making sure it says S= OFF, or if you are going to get into flashing ROMS install ROM manager via the market...when you run it, it will say that you got root access or not and allow you to flash clockwork recovery

You can act like some sort of internet commando all you want. My advice stands and if you don't like it...well; who cares. I help plenty of people. As for people like you, I love watching you complain like a whiny child.
There will always be those kids who want to argue over everything until they get their way. I just get the feeling you're a young kid who always acts out against the grain trying hard to gain attention from those around you in order to make yourself more noticeable.
I am here to help people and if that includes encouraging members to learn first before they do harm to their device then so be it. And if you don't like or agree with said opinion so what. If I can prevent even one person from ruining their phone before they learn how to use it then I accomplished something.
I have a very successful computer/consultation firm so my advice seems to have gotten me and my clients pretty far in life.

Actually, I was thinking about this.. I was thinking about how many people there could possibly be.. who contemplated rooting their mytouch4g's and came upon your warning thread stickied up top...who read your thread and actually thought to themselves "I've just been delivered by a forum angel! Thank goodness for that thread.. I just saved myself from bricking my brand new phone. What was I thinking to begin with?" Lol.
And then I saw your the link under your avatar to "donate to me"....is that some sort of a joke? Is that supposed to be a mockery of how actual developers accept donations for their work? What have you actually done in this forum.. or others.. what would warrant ANYONE donating ANY sums of money?? I laughed.
Could you imagine.. again... some "noob" coming on this forum.. reading your thread.. thinking "wow, I've just been rescued from a potential hazard. now, where's my credit card, this guy deserves some money"... lol, highly unlikely. So stop fooling yourself.. you're not a mod, you're not a developer. You're just a narcissistic snob who's perception of self importance on this forum is incredibly distorted.
Now, I apologize to everyone for this ongoing bickering between cbc and me. I didn't want to do this, but he just wont leave this thread alone... so I had no choice. Sorry.

Root took me awhile, but I managed to get it with these steps.
1. download visionary, root.zip from the s=on s=off guide. its in the middle of android development section of mytouch 4g.
I had to download Visionary .11 and .14
unzip the root.zip and place the folder on your sd card
After extracting the root file I doubled clicked it and there was another root folder inside which opened to the three files inside including the .sh command so I dragged that over
2. download android terminal emulator from the market
3. go to setting -> application-> turn off fastboot
go to setting -> application-> development -> turn on USB debugging
4. open visionary and click temp root. you will get black screen, dont freak out, give a min (make sure r/w is checked on)
Do this with Visionary .11 NOT .14
5. open android terminal emulator
type in "su" then click entet (without " mark)
it will probably say permission is denied
type in "su" again, then click enter
supper user will pop up asking for permission click "allow"
type in "cd /sdcard/root" then click enter
type in "sh root.sh" then click enter
I couldn't get this command to work until I extracted the compressed file and clicked root, then dragged the root folder over. After typing this command it will say it failed but in a few seconds it will tell you differently, saying to reboot into recovery
give a min or two when it says turn off and go into recovery to check if s is on or off, exit out of emulator
6. turn off the phone, then reboot into hboot by holding volume down and power button
7. it should say S=OFF
now using your volumebutton and power button
navigate to fastboot then reboot
Here is where I installed Visionary .14 and had to click temp root and then permaroot
8. when it reboot go to visionary again and click permenant root
it will reboot your phone
and then I suggest using Rom Manager to download the clockwork recovery and make a backup ASAP.
I installed these apps with astro
and with the root folder it looked like this
compressed root folder > extracted to just the root folder > root folder > three codes/scripts.
hey @darkpaniel honeslty man i would just stop worrying about it, those people are always going to be like that and never change, They just think they are amazing and know everything. I wouldn't waist your time anymore responding to him if people want to root they will root.
I'm over it i have just moved on to other areas to find steps or answers to questions i have

Paid service to Flash New ROM?

Hi Everyone,
I have spent hours trying to root, get S-Off and back up my HTC Desire Z.
It's the first time I have done it and I'm a complete newbie to all of this and it's way out of my level of proficiency.
Even though the guides have been written very well this whole thing is really beyond me.
Is there a paid service or is there someone on here who has done this before a few times that could do this for me remotely? I'd be happy to pay and sit here while you work your magic.
Hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction.
Thanks!
Jason
umm, its often not the best idea to give someone access to your computer remotely, but your choice. id suggest trying to find someone local to help you. but there is always more options, often free
first of all there is little expertise needed to do it yourself, and I suggest learning how to root and why the rooting process itself works, as in the future you are bound to run into issues and not understand them, this could lead you to inadvertently brick your phone. for the most part having a rooted phone allows you to do anything to it, meaning a brick is much more possible.
I suggest reading up a bit on the process, finding out what benifits it has, and if you really need this. my guess is you want custom roms and the ablitity to use rooted apps, great, we all do. so do a little reasearch on the pros and cons and you will feel much better about it.
use google, its helpfull, search "cyanogen wiki g2 root" and "xda wiki vision root" and similar terms to find the proper rooting guides. also "reasons to root android"
read through the guides, log onto freenode irc #g2root (google it) and there will be many helpful people there that can explain what to do and why it works.
you'll be much happier and much more well informed. this will help you understand the process so future devices won't be overly complicated to you and lessen the chance for a brick, good luck!

Hi mate,
I'm kinda in the same boat as you but I agree with the others, just stick at practising and you'll get better at it. You've managed to get root right? So that is the hardest part over and you did it. Flashing new ROM should be the easy part.
You can get real time help from the more experience members of this forum by going to this chat site:

where the likes of Nipqer and Setherio will be able to assist providing you ask nicely.
Go to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912&page=65 and ask away.
There aren't many guides here that actually work. Trust me, I've had trouble with other G2 phones. The process of downgrading and then rooting the phone is still difficult. The only guide I've ever found to work is this one. Just go down where it says "Rooting the Vision (G2/DZ) and DHD ". It explains how to downgrade, root, and install custom recovery onto your phone.
I can give you a few pointers from the guide.
#1 Get the Android SDK kit. You'll need it just to be able to do anything.
#2 Know some DOS. You may need to get yourself into the Android SDK directory or other directories. For example, cd "" is a great command. All you do is browse to where you need to go in Windows Explorer and right click the bar on top and select "copy address". Just paste that address between the quotations and you would have done half the work in modifying your phone. Also, you can paste stuff right into DOS by right clicking and selecting paste.
#3 Know some Terminal commands. Using "ADB shell" starts a terminal like shell that isn't dos, but is done through dos. Some commands need to be done in pure dos and some through ADB shell. The $ in adb shell means no root, and # means root.

That's the same guide that I used last night to root and it worked perfectly for me. I did have issues with the temp-root to backup but Nipqer helped me out in IRC. It didn't end up working (the backup) but we decided that it didn't matter too much (I just used a different backup utility that did not require root).
I suggest you not to look for a payment method but to try it your self, use a guide or ask help to a friend (or here on xda), it's not so hard.

6055U Root method found

Hello all, I found a method to Root and get a custom recovery on our cricket variant, no donations required! You need to find a copy of sugar qct with a username and password, I don't remember exactly where I found it but it shouldn't be too difficult to find. Then you need to let it update to the latest build, which includes the programmer for our phone. If you don't see 6055u in the list it's not up to date. From there, Hook up your phone (may need to manually put it in download mode. Press upgrade and then navigate to the install directory, look in /bin and find where it downloads all the mbm files. Replace the one that starts with an r with the TWRP recovery for 6055. You may have to overwrite it multiple times during the process. If you did it correctly you will be able to boot into TWRP, if not try again. If you don't close sugar I believe it won't overwrite the firmware files, but I haven't messed with it much. I will try to write a tool to make it easier when I have the time but I'm pretty busy. Feel free to pm me with any questions and I will help the best I can.

Did a Google search for "sugar qct" and I see a couple of million hits for "The Sugar Act"...
Tried Root Genius, and it, of course doesn't work...
If you happen to find a link for the app or method you stated, I would be eternally grateful... My lovely wife and I upgraded our phones to the Cricket 6055U, and, since, while not an Android developer, per se, can find my way around the device without being scared off...
So, with due respect, I'd ask if you have the app or name correct?
Thanks, friend, and best respect.

Oops... was premature... found it and am giving it a try... I'll post my results after I give it a shot...

This should help with setting up sugar. The only difference here is to update it and you also need a username and password that I don't have on me at the moment. It will be a few hours until I get home but I will update asap.
Edit: nevermind lol, good luck friend. You may need a decent battery percentage as well

OK... apparently I'm an idiot... Running Windows 10 Pro, and the installer says it's going to install to an appropriate folder on C:\... yet, trying to find it, it really is weird.... I'm going to try on a VMWare Win 7 virtual PC, and see if I'm able to find it there, and move it to my actual C: drive...
If it works, I'll be grateful for your contribution and praise you to the highest heaven!

Can't seem to get the beast to work...
If you would be so kind, would there be any way you'd be able to write up a concise step-by-step thing, if you've made it work... I've got the .chm file open on my desktop, and have spent a few hours trying to make it work to no avail.
Again, if it worked for you, your process would be welcome.

My point is that the site recommended seems to insist on Lollipop on the small beast... and there doesn't seem to be a recommendation for the .bin files, and, when installing on Win 10, it seems to install the Sugar app into some directory on my C: drive that is really not that accessible... Did it using a VMWare Win 7 32-bit virtual, and was able to access the directory, copy and paste to my regular C: drive (old Windows geek since Win 3.11... and DOS 3), and it seemed to run... (of course, running as Administrator), but it really doesn't seem to work for me... Again, I freely admit that I'm likely not doing something right, but even after some research and the included .chm file, I seem to be missing something.
Again, and begging your indulgence for seeming like a noob or a rube, but if I'm not making it happen, I rather think that the tips would be lost on someone for whom this is their first Android device...
Kinda frustrating, as, even though I've been a tech-support guy and database developer for more than 30 years, this thing has me stymied...
I found it fascinating for the *#*# command, earlier, from another noble soul, and, obviously, I also found that the device as configured says, basically... "Don't give a damn... you can turn this sucker on, but as soon as you exit this menu, I'm gonna turn it off again."
Just a little frustrating, and it seems that most of the tips and tricks elsewhere seem to be thinking that new owners of the 6055U are running Lollipop.... aaarrrgggghhh....
If it needs Lollipop to work, and if there's a relatively painless way to downgrade, and then upgrade from a ROM, I'm good with that... the Idol 3 seemed to require that, and it worked well for me, with just an evening's work. This one? Cricket seems to have had a warped sense of humor about it... I seriously dig the device, and, since my Idol 3 broke, and my lovely wife's LG G-Stylo (which was a pain in the ass, and next-to-impossible to root, and then be just perpetually stuck at the logo screen with an unfixable boot loop, if one screwed it up, and just required sending the beast back to LG, as long as one took out Cricket's warranty plan... <sigh>), we took the plunge on this one...
Not much for which I require root, but, since I spent good money on some legit apps (and lucked into a few ... ahem... not legit apps that worked for me), these things require root... I know there's a way to do it, and the Sugar app seems promising, but, mildly autistic guy that I am (and 60 years old, with a memory that doesn't work as it used to), a slimmed-down step-by-step doc would be helpful... should some noble soul put such together...
Apparently, the root method has worked for at least one member here.... But this weird old Jewish hippie doesn't see the mental diagram....
Any help would be welcome, my friends and mishpocheh... ("dear family" --- been here enough years, albeit a relatively quiet member, that y'all might as well be family... )
Hey everyone, sorry about the confusion. I installed on Windows 10 pro with no issues. As far as the page I linked you can disregard everything but the app itself. The update that downloads is marshmallow, and I've had no issues overwriting the latest version. I may have gotten sugar from a different location though, as soon as I get a chance I will do a better write up with everything. A helpful way to find the install directory would be right click on the shortcut from the start menu and click find Target / open file location. If it brings you to the folder with the shortcuts do it again and you will have the install directory. The app should be in (install dir)/tool and the downloaded updates go in (install dir)/bin under a folder that only shows up once you start the process within sugar. I will try to compile the information into a more user friendly format tonight but I can't make any promises on that.
Also just to clarify, I didn't use any chm file
I'm wondering if you could upload your version you have on your pc. I just spent the last month in jail here in Orlando fighting a case and the only proof I've got is on my phone on a phone that I deleted my videos on. I really need the videos back too get a not guilty if I gotta pay for it it's cool but I'm out on bond and all the recover videos apps require root
I got this to work last night. Typed up some instructions but didn't get them posted. They're on my PC at home and I'm at work.
Basically use the copy of sugar in the download package in this thread and then start it and let it update https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/recovery-vodafone-prime-tab-7-t3548560
Those are the basic instructions too except we don't need to swap out bout and use the TWRP from deckersu thread.
Once flashed it'll automatically reboot. I found you had to make sure you caught this and booted into TWRP right away don't let the phone boot. Then transfer SuperSU in TWRP and flash.

FYI this root method wipes your phone so I don't know if this will help your situation or not.
In sugar there is an option to not wipe, it's under session settings or something to that effect

Wish I had noticed that!! Oh well, stoked to have root and it's good to start fresh. Got Xposed installed today and finally got that annoying charging light turned off. Working on getting wifi tetherng working. Then if I can figure out how to get the dialer to be friends with Google voice this phone will have all its annoyance fixed

Thank you for finding this thread, it is the same one I found but I couldn't remember where it was the other day when I started this thread. Hopefully this will help the people who have been having issues, although I will admit a more painless method would be preferable. I'm currently working on modifying a dirtycow exploit to simply flash the recovery and reboot into twrp, if I get it to work I will zip it all up and post it here.
