windows8 virus affected. - Windows 8 General

I installed windows8 developer edition in the C drive. No other operating systems. I have updated the windows defender from windows update.
Then i made some browsing and downloaded some exe's and installed them. But now i think my pc is infected with virus. Windows defender detected few viruses and quarantined them. I deleted them. Now my pc is having few issues. It is taking a lot of time to restart. Also the recycle bin icon on the desktop is now changed to bluetooth icon. I guess my pc is virus infected.
I heard windows defender is a full fledged antivirus solution for windows8. IS it not?
Do you recommend any antivirus solutions for windows8. What should i do now.
Actually i purchased KASPERSKY ANTIVIRUS 2011 which is compatible with windows7. My subscription is upto march 2012. But my bad it is not compatible with windows8. Any solution for this one too..

Windows Defender is not AntiVirus... You want Microsoft Security Essentials or whatever their calling it now

It's all incorporated into Defender now.

We will never get Professional Security from M$.We must depend on Professional AV Providers like norton,Kaspersky.

Why were you installing random executables? If you can't use Windows without F8cking up so badly then you shouldn't be using Developer Preview. GO back to Windows 7, most AV software doesn't work with W8 anyway.

Well those "professionals" are the most expencive AV in the market.. dont know if you get a % of it.. but there are some out there completly free.
The AV industry is like politics.. there are AV to Mac OSX and there is no virus there..
there is AV in Windows Phone and there is no virus there.. is just business
MS changed many things with time. you go instal something, and you have to confirm it and alow it to acess previleges if asked for that program.
that is just the problem.
people install everything even if dont know what is it .. MS cant do mutch unless start cuting some fingers to dont alow install even after warnings.

Agree with that so much, people fail at things so hard mostly because they don't read...

SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes should clean the infection up for ya, if not, try ComboFix.

i've never gone wrong with panda cloud av...and its free. i currently use it on my windows 8 m3 build 8102 x86, and it works just fine. as the tech of my friends and family...im always cleaning viruses from peoples computers, even though they have nortons, mcafee, sophos, etc...but when i uninstall them and use panda it almostr instantly finds viruses and malware the others didnt detect. i think av's are much better cloud based as you dont need to update definitions...just connect and you are protected in real time.

Firewall

Hi, I am searching for any good firewall which will works with my mda II. Thanks
try some of these hits
http://www.google.dk/search?q=pocketpc+firewall&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=da&btnG=Google-søgning
dont see any reasons myself though a firewall is as useless for a pda imho as a virus scanner
I am very offten online on my mda because of icq.. and I have some secrets on it also. And hacking of unsecure device is very simple.. Why you thing FW is not neccessary?? Otherwise I didn't found any one in the link you post..
well i just never heard about people hacking a pda
it's not like it support any kind of smb so they can access your "drive"
that way
but i'm pretty sure that if hackd the hacker would have to know it were a pda and not just a std computer
kinda like a hacker cant hack your linux or mac computer the same way he can a windows box
never come across a firewall
but i have come across a virus checker but not any pda virus's
some virus checkers come in packets with firewall aswell maybe you want to check the big virus checker companies to see what they ofer in the flavor of pda's and if those checkers include firewall too
otherwise i would just search google untill my fingers fell off if it were me

Antivirus packages

Do we need an Antivirus Package on the device when running WM6?
And if we do, what is the best one?
Thanx!
Noone does need an antivirus package on PPC.
If you think you should use one, that does mean that symantec advertising campaign was good
I used trend on wm5 coz i got it by my job...
but not tried yet on wm6... will do, but think its not necessary yet
How would one get a virus on Windows Mobile? You'd have to download and run an executable to do it. Either that, or get exploited over a network via a security hole, or through Pocket IE. There haven't been many exploits that I've heard of.
I doubt it's worth the processor time to run one.

Which Anti-Virus?

Hi
Anyone any views on whether I should use the bundled anti-virus or stick with AVG?
Cheers
I did not want to use the bundled app.as it was only a trial. Avg works fine. i have not noticed any slowing down as a result.

I use AVG complete with AVG firewall. I cannot find a way to allow USBTool to work with AVG. The solution is straight forward, in that, as you have to disconnect all wireless connections, it does not matter if you temporarily deactivate the firewall, and it seems to reactivate if you put Vista to sleep. The only other thing with AVG is it seems to muck up wi-fi unless you disable 'detect active area'.
Has anyone had a problem with Trend Micro when upgrading to Vista SP1? My Shift was working fine until i did the upgrade, then i had a note to upgrade the Trend Micro (due to a conflict) and from then on i had a lot of problems. The result was that my Shift was totally unable to connect to the internet over wifi or cable. After a roll back to pre-SP1 it works fine again now and i'm not keen to apply SP1 again.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggested solutions?
AVG doesn't sound that great following what i read above? What other Antivirus apps would work well on a resource limited device?

I use NOD32 (from eset). This one works very well on SP1 and doesn't use much resources
I have been using Avast and it seems to work fine on the shift both pre and post SP1. Avast is also free for your personal pc or a home user. You only need to pay for it when it is to used on a business system or system you use for commerical purposes.
AVG may still be slightly better on using less computer resources, but I like the Avast user interface better. Both are many times better than the blotware from norton or mcafee and such.
thanks guys. Is the best thing to...
1. remove Trend
2. install the SP1
3. install Avast or Nod32

Yep, that's the correct order. (Altough it's not a problem to have nod32 installed)
Be aware that Nod32 is not free! (But in my opinion the best)
Thanks. I'm happy to pay for a good solution, especially if it works well on a machine that is short on spare resources... I just don't know which the best solution for this kind of PC is. Why do you like Nod32 so much?

Kaspersky
Nod32
My advice: Nod32

(REQ) Anti Virus ?

I am using a htc touch pro. Just wondering, is it possible for the phone to be infected by virus? Earlier on there was a trojan on my pc and it stopped the pc from detecting touch pro when i connect it through usb port. it could only read as a removable drive but no longer shows me the screen that lets me choose between active sync and disk transfer. the option to let me choose is still on though, but the screen wont appear when i connect to my pc.. so, any antivirus for the phone? {p.s ive removed the trojan from my pc too}
www.eset.com
nope, not really needed, but eset or avira provide them

WOW... Don't scream so loud, we are not blind...
Fact is that the chance of coming acros a virus on a PDA is too small for me to put up with stupid device slowing software.
I once installed Bull Guard on my ppc (HTC Touch) but after the trail period ended it was next to impossible to remove again. Even with the help of the Bullguard people.
My advice: Don't bother

If you would have read the question on post #1 with attention, as well as my answer to that question, you would have known, before putting me to research, that I was saying the exact thing that this Microsoft report sais:
Important: Currently, we are not aware of any viruses that can be transferred from your laptop or your desktop to your Windows Mobile-based device.

Free anti-virus

I'm looking for a free anti virus program for Rhodium. The only one I found was Flexis Mobile Security. It can be found on 'freeware pocketpc .net' under security. (I tried to post the link, but it's being blocked because of security reasons)
Does anyone have any experience with this program, or can anyone point me to another free anti virus program?
Thanks in advance,
Rob
Www(dot)mylookout(dot)com
Why do you want an antivirus on your Rhodium? Back when I was still a n00b to Windows Mobile (~2 years ago), I bought a one year license for Norton Mobile Antivirus, and it had a feature which let you view the entire virus database. There were about 20 total viruses in the database, and only 3 were for Windows Mobile; the rest were for Symbian. Now, of those three viruses for Windows Mobile, one of them asked you if you wanted to be infected or not, and the other two came from illegal sites nobody should go to anyway. Any mobile antivirus will barely protect you from a virtually nonexistent threat, and it will only slow down your device. No matter how paranoid you are about viruses on your Rhodium, it's just a waste your time to actually use a mobile antivirus.

I second this, I was running Kaspersky Mobile and all it did was slow down my phone. We may need it in the future but not now.
Last December I found a virus on my flashdrive. It copied itself to the trashbin of Windows XP and infected any flashdrive I plugged in. I removed the virus, but I already had synchronised my phone.
How can I find out if this virus has infected my Rhodium?

Two different Operating Systems. Viruses are written to attack specific OS's. Just make sure you scan the flashdrive under windows for virus. Don't worry about the Win Mobile OS.
I use ESET mobile AV.

And I'll take a look at ESET AV. Better safe than sorry.
Today I found an article in the paper. Apparently the game '3D anti terrorist action' may be infected with a trojan virus. The smartphone starts dialling expensive international phonenumbers.
Does anyone have any experience with 'Lookout mobile security'?
Please let me know if it's a good application.

I've been using Lookour Mobile Security for 4 or 5 months now, haven't noticed any slowdown in the phone. Nothing has been detected either, but I don't go to risky sites using my phone, and all my spam is filtered by email provider before getting to my inbox, so I can't say anything about the efectiveness of the antivirus.
Thanks for your comment aboute the use of Lookout, Josemald.
Just a few things I'd like to know.
When I go to the Lookout site, I get a screen, asking for my mobile number. Do you get an e-mail link as text message?
Could you tell me what happens after that?
Thanks.
Never mind, figured it out.

So, after an hard reset, I flash again my HD (with a new rom)... and I'm not installed Lookout again.

Software firewall
I think more important than a AV, is a software firewall for Windows Mobile.
This way we can control our connections and see if any programs are connecting without our knowledge.
Right now we are installing CAB files from everybody but we don't know much about who writes them and they could easily have back-doors to collect out email passwords etc.
