[Q] Which USB cameras work with nook color? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a list of supported USB cameras that work with the nook color's USB host mode? Especially ones that have build-in microphones - I would like to start using Skype with the nook color if possible or at least be able to take a picture/video from time to time.

I could be wrong, but I don't think any webcams work with the USB host mode yet.

Hey. I apologize if I'm asking a question that's been answered. But how can I get USB Host mode enabled? Do I still have to use that special kernel? If I do, the link for it doesn't work anymore. I have the micro-USB gender adapter, NOOK Color Tweaks, Cyanogen Nightly 8-31-2011, and that's it. Do I need something else? I have looked everywhere and can't find a comprehensive guide for enabling USB Host mode for USB peripherals. Please help me!

Yeah, that thread is a bit of a nightmare. USB Host is built into the nightlies now, and I think it has been since before 8/31, but you may want to grab a more recent nightly. You enable USB Host in the Nook Tweaks app. A lot of peripherals won't show up unless you run them through a USB hub, ideally a powered one.
I think a lot of things need to be mounted via terminal commands, too. I'm just offering a digest of what I've seen in the thread, though--I haven't gotten any of my peripherals to register on the NC, but then I wouldn't expect any of them to register without a hub, except maybe my card reader.

USB Host

Does anyone know of a usb host driver that enables usb host on the X1? Another user reported that the Zeno usb host drivers did not work. Any one tried others with success?
it has been discussed here somewere, and the last thing was all agreed it doesn't have a USB Host!
i hope it's not true, only time will let us know!
Uh... Well... I understand what you are asking for, but I don't know what you want to do with it... What would be the need for a USB host function on a mobile phone

Let's say you have some files on a thumb drive and wanna work on them (.doc , .xls...etc) but you don't have a laptop with you.
Or..Some images on an external HDD you wanna send via email, but no laptop with you...
Or..Show off to your iSheep friends that you can connect usb mouse and keyboard to use on your x1..
Get images off of your digi cam....etc etc
How about pluging in a usb joypad for gaming??
Endless possibilities.
I've recently seen some universal WinMo USB host drivers but the problem with X1 supposedly is that it doesn't power the USB port itself so you might need to power it externally. Dunno if it would really work though.
But you still need a pen drive or ext. hd with mini USB right?

Does the amazon actually work on the X1?
Peeps, i have been thinking about this problem for awhile now. Check this thread, there is a link to a site with drivers that should work,

BUT
BUT
BUT
Xperia doesn't have a powered usb. So, the only two ways to get something working are to either connect something with its own power supply, or to use a usb injector. Sadly the first option defeats the whole point of connecting a flash or a mouse and the latter one, well, i haven't had any luck with a suitable injector for the x1.
Good luck.

NO, not unless we have a driver for USB host for X1
And as above posts stats, power to the USB.

Hello,
Is there a chance to have USB host on HD2 under android builds ?
If not can we know what is the main problem ?
Android is based on a linux kernel isn't it ?
So, if USB host is supported under linux builds, why is it impossible on android ?
Thanks to teatch me !
I don't think android in general allows USB host on any device... that's the problem. The linux kernel supports it, but android doesn't. If you use ubuntu you can have usb host on the HD2.
Actually, the Notion Ink Adam runs Android and has USB host mode. With a bit of kernel hackery, this could well be possible on the HD2.
Using a USB Y-cable and providing external power, it should be possible to connect all sorts of things. I'm patiently waiting for this capability as I have a USB SSD HDD that I connect to my car's head unit that I'd like to connect to my phone when I'm at work

You're right, I have seen other android tablets with usb host, too. I remember seeing the devs explain somewhere why android on the hd2 doesn't have usb host... I thought I remember it sounding like it wouldn't be able to happen until a later version of android... but I could be wrong or misunderstood. I'll try to find where I read this.

Hi.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10797562
It's an easy way to use the USB connector in host mode, works under ubuntu.
with some adaptors you can build it also by using an y- cable.
But I think android for HD2 doesn't support anny usb features until now, perhaps someone will activate it in the kernel.

Yes, most of us are aware that host mode is usable whilst running Ubuntu. The problem is that Ubuntu is not really convenient as a main phone OS; Android is and some devices seem to have host mode while running Android.
Hopefully one of the devs will see this thread and give some insight.

[Q] USB capibilities (host mode etc)

what can be done via USB on the nook?
can it do host mode? (to connect to USB accessories, I would assume the need for a powered hub as I do not epect the nook to be able to power the USB bus)
with the standard firmware it acts like a drive when connected to a PC, with the cyanogen firmware, what other devices can it be made to look like? I haven't been able to access it as a drive since flashing it.
can the USB be made to look like a network?

Look in the Dev section. They're working (and getting very close?) to being able to do this (hello external hard drive!).
which feature are they close to getting working?
The one where we can have hosting enabled
So...everything-ish
glad to hear this. any pointers on what threads to look at? (unfortunantly I'm not allowed to post questions there yet)

[Q] Audio via USB?

Since the Nook Simple Touch does not have an audio jack, it's a deal breaker for me.
However, might there be some way to route audio via usb -> 1/8th TRS? If so, I would definitely jump on the device and buy it as soon as I get some money to spend on new toys.
Bluetooth maybe?
Well since the Nook Color hardware is so close to the N2E, since they have working bluetooth, I bet it won't be too long until we see the N2E with it as well.

Well I believe the SoC includes Bluetooth hardware. Since it's there why not have that ability on the Nook as well. Enabling Bluetooth could solve general lack of audio issues for some people.
I thought I saw it somewhere that it's concluded Nook STR does NOT have function BT?
This week at Walmart I saw a USB / Bluetooth adapter. I believe you would need a micro-USB adapter to connect it to the Nook. But as I was looking at it, I was thinking of this thread and wondering if you could make the physical connections work, would the nook end up with Bluetooth capability.
Any thoughts on if this would work or not ?
not bleutooth ...
the thread seems to be going into bleutooth mode...
Was wondering if connectiing a headphone with a microusb adapter would help get the audio?
like say this micro usb to headphones adapter
www[dot]amazon[dot]com/Samsung-Headset-Adapter-Strive-Flight/dp/B003W057FS/ref=pd_cp_cps_1
same as catzilla this would really help me decide on the nook touch
People seem to get it working with the nook colour, so it may be for the touch as well.
First step is to get USB host mode
check this thread,

Saombra,
But this only works on CM7. Still waiting for something that may run on regular nook android. And it is quite scary that you may fry your usb on th enook in case you forget to switch it back to client mode before connecting to your computer.

Someone with a little patience could probably take the required code from the latest CM 2.6.29 kernel sources and apply it to the Nook kernel sources.
Also I seem to recall that the "usb power issue" was solved some time ago?
USB host mode is nice and all that, but are there actually any libs in Android that can push audio trough USB?
I remember dreaming of being able to connect my X10 to an external DAC, but that was before I invested in a couple of squeezeboxes
Well, I hope we can find someone with time and knowledge to do so.
And regarding the usb host, that is the information I found from saombra's post.
I don't know regarding library, but I know that in this post those guys learned how to get audio from a dock using a samsung smartphone usb port. So there is a way. Maybe the only way.

USB Host on CM7, how to activate?

I read in past threads that it used to be a stand alone USB host activator application and eventually got integrated into CM7. I think I have nightly build 230 and USB function doesn't work at all. Furthermore I've been thought all the settings and don't see anything about USB host, only USB debugging?
There is no more nook tweaks anymore.. I re-downlaoded that and there's still no "USB host" option I can find to activate. All I want to do is connect a keyboard to the nook.
Any help on this (seemingly should-be) answer on where to find to activate it?
I've tried both a Belkin 7-port hub powered and unpowdered with no success.
Dal's app is still in the market....
