Who knows....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1072717

ICS is supposed to be a type of "universal" update that brings all devices under one platform to unify android instead of being fragmented the way it is. I was doubtful that the sgs4g would get it but after reading up on it it does appear hopeful that devices like ours will get the update as well.

Well... at the moment... no one knows if it is 2.4 or 4.0.
So thanks for pointing that out. I cant fix the poll title so bare with me.

Officially? I'm almost certain that's a no. Took them 6 months to give us GB and this phone is about to hit it's end of life cycle.
But unofficially, most certainly. Kmobs and Zinx have this phone, the two prominent devs in the CM team. So I'm highly confident that through them, we'll be amongst the first batch of phones to get ICS via CM8.
Just my thought.

I agree we will get it via cm8 not officially though

Tmobile, from what I remember is part of the Android alliance. They promise upgrades, when a new Android OS comes out, it'll only end when the phone is 18 months old. I doing we'll see it right away, but i'm pretty sure we will officially see it at some point.

Not sure about that because to me, T-Mobile has the worst track record of phones getting updates.
The myTouch Slide 3G was promised Froyo last summer but didn't get it till earlier this year. And you can pretty much throw GB out of the equation for that phone.
The Vibrant has yet to even have a GB leak while the Vibrant 4G gets GB leaks every month or so. Which is sad.
The G2 was supposed to get GB very early but are now just getting it. And its life cycle already ended a month or two ago so that getting ICS is doubtful.
And that's just to name a few.

I'm not gonna lie, but you are correct about all of that. I'm willing to give them another shot, them ima go to sprint. I do like t-mo,I had a good plan with them, they made me change plans, when I added a new line, also I just got throttled. If they can update this phone to ICS, I'll stay if not, i'm gone.

I hear ya, I love TMO as well and I would love to be wrong to be honest. But looking back at how the Evo, and even the freakin year and a half old Droid INC got GB it made me think how terrible TMO is compared to the other carriers.
I would probably switch to Sprint as well if anything, I just wish their 3G was good.

You would think the company that first introduced Android to the world, would set an example for everyone else on how to update your Android's in a timely manner. Instead they are usually the last ones to do so or they'll release a new version of the phone that is updated, an scrap the older ones. The only reason why i'm still with then is,i have good connection at home an in my area, an I don't want to spend the extra money for a etf.

From what I was told (by a German TMO sales rep), they have a fairly long internal QA process to make sure that a new ROM works (together with any of their own additions). So it usually takes them more than six months after a new ROM has been released, before it is officially available from them. This is not only true for Android, but is also valid for Blackberry and WP7.

FWIW... We switched to sprint. Hated sprint cdma. And t mobile is hardly the worst track record, all the carriers have been about the same. I think verizon and the droid line up is your"worst"...

I can understand a 6month time frame to get everything working. I had the mytouch 3g slide, an that took a year an a month(not sure, maybe 2) to get upgraded to 2.2, they didn't even do an ota. It was either do it yourself via HTC or go to a store an get it done. I think that's pretty bad though, it took them that long.
From my fist to your face, enjoy.

Yeah... I don't see why they need at least 6 months. I mean it took CM's team like a little over a month after GB's source was released to get it to multiple different phones. Plus CM implemented their CM Settings as well.
I'm not saying it's a wrong statement, just wondering how a group of mostly college kids can beat big companies to it.

Samsung Galaxy S phone may skip 2.2 and jump to 2.3 gingerbread

So i was reading this blog and bam i finally got slapped with a pretty cool rumor that got me a little excited so i wanted to share because of all the 2.2 questions maybe this will shed some light

Highly doubtful.
Epic just upgraded to 2.2, and Vibrant was scheduled last week but got postponed a week. If we were going to see 2.3 instead, then we'd have to wait months...first Samsung would release to International Galaxy S, then give it to all the carriers who then make modifications.
At this point all the carriers have been working on 2.2 so I doubt they would drop doing their work on this to skip over froyo.
i wouldnt be surpised if we skip all updates straight into 3.0 after all not the first time samsung ****ed us(all galaxy s will get 2.2 SHORTY after release).
At this point, I don't have too much hope for 2.2. I've seen in the past with other devices and OS that VZW skip a release or two because it failed their internal testing or something. I wouldn't be surprise if 2.2 was like that
I'm not worried about updates anymore...

Seems this is becoming a common sentiment. Go figure, right?
It seems as if Verizon is putting all of its eggs in the Motorola basket. They get updates/fixes galore.
I will be furious if the Fascinate goes the way of the Droid Eris (what I JUST upgraded from). Fortunatley, instead of burning an upgrae, I bought off of Craigslist.
maybe we will at least see a 2.3 leak one day!
We're going to get 2.3 eventually.
You guys can't blame Verizon for us not having froyo. If t mobile is so great why don't the vibrant have it? And sprints testing is poopoo, if you read about their new froyo, I don't think anyone is impressed
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Yeah I absolutely love the irony of everyone jumping ship from Verizon when the other devices haven't got Froyo either. When T-Mobile gets Froyo onto the Vibrant we shall see. The Epic is different hardware (different enough that Samsung probably shipped different drivers/RIL). This entire attitude of "verizon sucks" is just laughable at this point.

T-Mo sucks and has the spottiest data coverage of any carrier I have ever used. I can remember driving down the highway, using my Nexus One in the car cradle, and having to wait for Google Maps to load up my current location because the buffered map areas couldn't keep up since the data connection kept going up and down. I could get across the city so quick on the highway that the network could not seemlessly handle me moving across the network so fast. Verizon has been a breath of fresh air compared to T-Mo, and the only thing I miss is the control I had with my Nexus One. That said, the screen on this phone is nice and is really the top of the class. We will get 2.2 soon enough, and with the proper foundation, I would think creating 2.3 ROMs will be an easy prospect.

gingerbread is coming!!!

On second thought. Why would samsung OTA us to 2.3, by doing so that would make the Nexus S just another Vibrant over at T-Mobile.

My understanding is that the Nexus S (like the Nexus One) is a stripped down, super-phone, demonstration of new technology and in this case the most notable difference would be the form factor and the NFC. I think Sammy would face more backlash from consumers for ignoring hardware customers already paid for so as to make a new product with near-identical hardware better.
I would assume to have a 2.3 powerhouse phone on all major carriers for bragging and sales purposes. Would make a ton of sense.

From the article:
While only a rumor, he's usually spot on and the tweet does seem very plausible so we wouldn't be surprised if Samsung Galaxy S phones (Captivate, Fascinate, Epic 4G and Vibrant) will beat HTC and Motorola devices to Android 2.3.

Personally, I'd never heard of him but I've requested to follow him on twitter. In the end we'll just have to wait and see but it would be nice. If this update were coming soon I think there would be some RCs floating around but seeing as we have Froyo ones and a 'near-official' OTA update that went to .4 phones its hard to know if we'll skip 2.2 and go right to 2.3. I want this to happen but the evidence I have right now would seem to go against this.
I honestly though don't care about gingerbread all that much. I'm planning to have this phone for awhile. It does everything I need with ease. Big difference from when I had the Moment and from day 1 felt the need to smash it into a wall because of how slow and laggy it was. I would hope samsung realizes this isn't a phone to cut ties with because it defintely has staying power even after it's superceded by something faster on paper but probably only marginably faster in real world use.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
So if you're wondering why Samsung hasn't bothered upgrading most of its smartphons to Android 2.2 Froyo yet then this could be the reason. Let's see if Samsung leapfrogs to Android Gingerbread before the holidays or not.

With how good samsung did with sales from all the galaxy s phones, i wouldnt be surprised that they would do this.. that would be so sweet to have gingerbread on epic and since its on the nexus s with samehardware screen and stats, makes sense they could upgrade all variants epic will definitly be the top of the line if it got gingerbread, but also i agree with the poster above about caring less as long as i have a good running phone with 2.2 ill be set til the dual core processors come out and another top of the line phone comes out for sprint next year or 2 years,

Indeed. I spent months reading about how my Mytouch was getting Eclair only to be let down every time. I will say that if they do leapfrog 2.2 and get my device up-to-android-date then when I buy my fiancee's new phone in about a month she'll be getting a Sammy device. Otherwise, I'm not going to get her a phone that's always out-of-date.
Now if we dont receive an update b4 january first for anything this might prove that we will have gingerbread later and prove that they skipped froyo.
I mean if they dont give us froyo b4 the end of the year like they promised, they could be working on gingerbread we shall see by the end of this month.
The only thing I am not looking forward to is the possible return of these forums turning into unreadable garbage of people trolling, fighting and starting multiple threads about when or why Gingerbread is/isn't on the epic.
This thread has been nice though.

Probably never...it's been suggested that manufacturers will be skipping 2.3 and just move to 2.4.
And Sprint won't be releasing anything anyway, this is all on HTC.
Manufacturers make the updates, send to carriers, carriers approve and and bloatware apps and release.
Yeah 2.4 sorry, so probably not then? Wow that's lame.

Ohh he meant sprint doesn't release updates and that its up to htc, no I know that I just meant sprint actually getting ahold of the final product and sending it out to us. I thought he was saying regardless of htc having a 2.3/2.4 update sprint will just be all natzi about it and not give it to us after they have ruined it via, bloatware and other disgusting apps. Why has the Epic not been EOL'd like the EVO?

Not understanding why Sammy doesn't just EOL the Epic. We already have the next gen out in the wild. And I'm thinking more and more each day that we will never even see 'official' Gingerbread.
Tired of having to keep checking here to see if official 2.3.4 is here and it never is and I crawl back in my hole and cry myself to sleep.
Don't know why I even care, my next phone won't be until the Galaxy S III hits the US. Flame away I guess.
Maybe because the epic touch was released after the evo 3d?

My theory is that this phone has a lot left in it. For a phone still running Froyo it can still hold its own against Gingerbread phones. This was one of the few Froyo phones to get skype video chat support (even though we can't use the ffc). This phone is. Damn good phone and now with LTE coming mid-2012 no one will want to give it up. Most people with an Evo have moved on to a new phone, Epic owners are still holding on. Plus compared to the Evo Shift this is the best andrid phone with a keyboard and no telling if there will be another. Just my thoughts

EOL was supposed to be October but at the bottom of the EOL it said *these dates are subject to change
Obviously they changed for the epic.
Probably because there aren't a lot of high end Android phones with a physical keyboard on Sprint, while there are plenty of ones without. It fills a niche. The EVO doesn't.
I hope this mean they will keep the epic 4g as a mid-range phone and extend its life all throughout 2012.

ok you read into it that the chance meant the epic what about the chance meaning one of the other phones like the evo 4g? bottom line is that sprint did announce the end of life epic 4g which is what i said and that they listed it as october which is true. so i did report it correctly and sprint has not said anything to the contrary about it either, so oct is it...

Outdated list, sprint Has removed it from the list since then. Of course they announced it, but "subject to change" which it has. Here you go.

ok but i still stand by the fact that it was announced. however just because it was not on the other list does not mean anything. It could be that since it was announced no need to state it again or that perhaps sprint is only giving it a month or so longer as verizon is getting the epic 4g 2 (now not apart of the galaxy s series) so we also know that sprint is getting a version as well also not a gs2 or gs.

Actually they do need to restate them hence the EVO still being there. And the Stratosphere is going to be a galaxy s line phone, and sprint is not getting one.

Why would they list the EVO twice if that was the case? Back in July and recent. I understand where you're coming from but this absolutist end of the Epic mood you put into your posts is unneeded. There is no point in complaining, it's a phone, we're on Android. The OS and the phones move so fast that top of the line is end of the line in a matter of days to be figurative. It's not end of line at the moment. It will be but not now.

I know some were hoping for EOL so they could time their insurance fraud properly to get an upgrade instead of a replacement Epic.

Probably because there aren't a lot of high end Android phones with a physical keyboard on Sprint, while there are plenty of ones without. It fills a niche. The EVO doesn't.

Exactly. There isn't a phone that has replaced it yet. I require a physical keyboard for my day to day use of my phone. I have tried to go virtual keyboard and just can't do it. Kind of hard to type shell commands in with virtual keyboard without the frustration of wanting to throw the phone out the window kicking in.

The EVO is a piece of crap and the Epic is Epic.
I believe the Epic is Epic and the EVO is dull.
Even if it does get EOL'd...our development here will keep this phone on the map for a LONG time in my opinion!!

if we ever get gingerbread. i think their maybe a newer secret built that we dont know about. i am flashed to revol with working internet and text but mms is no go... tried it with gingerbread and ec05.... but the reason i switched is because of end of life stigma. but lets face it many devs have switched to newer duel core phones and the dev community for epic was good considering we had nowhere near the evo 4g community but people are moving on.

Yeah, I know some have moved on, but even without GB source right now, we still have some awesome folks out here STILL making improvements to EC05...when GB source gets here, I believe (hopefully) we will see the return of a few. I think this phone will be around for a long time! All my opinion of course ....

I still think it's a great phone. It does everything I need and I even run my business from it. I remember when the only way to update your OS was to by a new phone or hack it. So I'm not really worried about GB. I can't miss what I never had. Just my $.02

Dude because not everyone goes and buys a new phone once they come out not everyone has money nor wants to do that. PLAIN IN SIMPLE.

the future of the vibrant

Aperently samsung dose not want to update this phone anymore so what will happen to the vibrant
i believe our phones are in the hands of the developers to make roms like ics passon that will be the closest thing to the ics rom that we will get
Well considering my contract ends in october, im not worried about this phone anymore. Switching to verizon

It's old yes, but it never really got any updates. It got 2.2 but I think it wasn't ever an OTA, it was a kies only update that bricked a lot of phones. Ive only used custom roms, but if I had kept this 500 dollar phone stock and never received any updates/fixes for it, I'd be pretty pissed. I don't know of any other phones that got the shaft THIS bad...I cannot believe samsung/tmo got away with this. It was a flagship phone, not some $199 retail phone they gave away........Hell all the other variants have OFFICIAL 2.3...nexus has the same specs and has official ICS....
Thank god for XDA

Actually I got my vibrants bogof from Tmobile so it was 2 for $149. For that price I'm pretty happy with what I got. I could understand somebody that got it full retail or at launch day at full price feeling like they were shafted though.

I got my 2 phones during the valentines special for free. I love this phone thx to XDA, CM and now ICS Passion. Updates from TMO or Samsung? That ship has sailed... a long time ago.
I don't worry about that anymore, CM7 is running just fine, lets get some bugs out of Passion and we are good to go.
I agree, if it wasn't for team toxic I would have sold this phone a long time ago.

Since im on an old em+ plan that doesnt cover subsidized phones, i paid full price for my vibrant. Barely had that phone for a year and i fully blame tmobile for the piss poor support. Never again. Im much happier now with my galaxy nexus.

Hope you never have to call 911.
On a side note, why isn't there a way to unthank a post? Damned thanks button needs to be somewhere else, I'm used to the quote button being on the end.

Not sure what your issues are, but my phone has pretty good GPS AND I can use 911 just fine, the 911 "issue" has been blown out of proportion
