[Q] Stylus/Screen Protector - Acer Iconia A500

I know there are a bunch of threads on varying versions of stylus and screen protectors, but I cant quite seem to find one that answers my questions.
What I am trying to find is a great screen protector. Something thats not overpriced just to be overpriced, but that does the job well. I want something that protects well (meaning a deep scratch in the protector wont impact the screen at all) with as little interference as possible on use.
As for stylus, I want to find something precise. Something that can be used to draw or make small notations with. I have been looking at the dagi stylus, like p601 and p504, but cant seem to find much different in what may work better than the other. My biggest concern is something precise and durable.
Does anyone has recommendations, it would be greatly appreciated

Have tried several here.they all seem about the same so far.Have been looking at the David one .The spring loaded 504.I think
Will prob buy it in the next week

Usable stylus for Hero

Hi All
My wife's recently got a Hero but she's found a problem with her long nails making typing difficult (capacitive screens don't work with fingernails!)
I've bought a couple of different types of iPhone stylus' but, though they do work, you have to really press quite [scarily] hard to make them register.
Can anyone recommend a stylus that works smoothly and without too much pressure?
Thanks!
The Pogo ones seem to be the most common iPhone ones, have you tried one of them?
Not yet - will seek one out. Thanks!
Did a quick search on Ebay - Item number: 390096569342 free postage too
Anybody have any joy resolving this?
Not yet. I was going to try a Pogo stylus but then found a review that suggests that it may be no different than the other stylus' I've bought. I can actually believe this because I've now managed to test the stylus' I've bought on an actual iPhone and they work far, far better than on the Hero
...not sure where to go from here.
It seems that HTC has lodged a stylus patent specifically for capacitive screens
http://htcpedia.com/news/htc-patents-stylus-for-capacitive-touch-screene.html
Thanks for the update. there has to be a lo-tech fix for this though. I'm going to have a think & a Google search & I'll let you know what I turn up
I found this but I'm not sure I like the idea of metal on glass
http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2009/06/diy_iphone_stylus.html
Update: Metal actually works on the screen!
Update: got this now http://www.flickr.com/photos/antisynoptique/3225070344/in/photostream/ my mind is thinking hard. JTHM what do the ends of your stylus' look like?
There's no helping some people.
Have you tried this?
+1 lol
topjolly
You'll be sorry when I make my own lo-tech stylus! I'll show you.
I'LL SHOW YOU ALL!
Sorry,
Sometimes I get a bit carried away, I just think that there is a better way & telling my better half to trim her nails (although it is a good idea) wont really fly
I always wait till my Japanese friends did something wrong and then ask them for Yubitsume. Works like a real finger
i was going to post a picture of a chopped off finger to be a smartass so i did a google image search...
now im mentally scarred for life :/
The best stylus I have ever used is the papermate flexgrip elite M. They come in different colors and double as a pen which is what they really are. I recommend highly. I change color with the outfit I'm wearing. I'm in IT Networking so I always keep one in my shirt pocket. My job gives them out. Once you start using them you wont be able to go back to a regular stylus. I can't. You want to see it with the cap on the pen side, not the clip side. I use the small stylus side.

[Q] Screen Black crushing/clipping

Hello, I did some Black crushing test, and I got out with this. The picture is attached.
I did ask for a for a RMA already, but waiting on the email. I'm deciding if it's worth even exchanging it, because they all seems to have this problem. I am currently on GB stock rom, but I don't want to root it and see if it's better on ICS because it would void my warranty.
Would you refund/exchange it? I have my SGS, it still works wonder, but the Note had me hooked. Now that I tried it for a few days I could wait for Note 2, but I'd like some opinions.
I exchanged, new one is the same. Pretty ****, so i just dont watch movies in a dark room on it.

Yeah, I am pretty settled on refund if it goes through. Otherwise I'll keep this one, because it's still 20$ shipping.
I guess it was a fun experiment, I will totally buy a refreshed version with no screen problem.
I mean, the selling point for me was the stylus and screen size/quality. It failed one of the two, and the stylus seems to not calibrate for software reasons. It works well still, impressed by the pressure sensitivity. There's also the bricking problem, but as far as I see, it's only because some people are morons and can't read. I could apply me buying the device to being moronic, I did my research, but I didn't think it was every Note. I thought it was just non-noticeable for the majority, how deceived I am.
I would however make the bezel smaller, keep a physical button and 2 touch(that can be pressed with the stylus) and make it a tad smaller. I would still buy it at the same size, or screen bigger with bezel smaller, but 5" with REALLY small bezel would be my best.
I wouldn't recommend the Note right now to someone looking for video playback. For a professional note taking device, I would in a heartbeat. It's more functional than any phone for someone with huge hand if they can 1hand operate it, it loses it's potential if you can't cover most of the screen with one finger, which I can't.
Why am I doing a review, I'm so pissed. Thanks for the reply anyway.
http://imgur.com/A2HA9,WO6cY
Is that even considered really bad black clipping?
Bump. I heard that some ICS roms can fix that, somehow.
I just don't know who to trust anymore. I want to root and install a custom rom, but I would lose my warrranty. I've been taking notes like mad for 2 days now while listening to podcasts, and it's a blast.

[Q] Recommendations for a CLEAR/NUDE protective case

Hey guys,
in the meantime while we are all waiting for our phones and diagnosing ourselves with generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and possibly Post traumatic stress disorder (after its all over), does anyone have any input as to what cases are great in terms of being protective and slim.
i dont care about them being scratched up, as long as the phone isnt.
and also the reason i say nude or clear is because we each chose our colors and whats the point if the case covers our color choice and we dont get to look at our phone in all of its magnificent beauty.
and one last thing, would the s2 cases fit on this?
I never had a case on my skyrocket and it was fine, but the s3 to me is gonna be my favorite for sure.

There is a case thread in the Accessories subforum and you should see some of the designs out there. FWIW, I ordered a flip because it works with the desktop charger that has the extra battery and things like Otterbox and others won't (but then you can get cases with kickstands, also covered in the Accessories forum).
thank you stan
mods can you either move to the correct subforum or close this thread please.
I always go with clear cases on all my phones. I completely agree what's the point of covering up the color of your phone?! Anyway, these 2 are currently in my shopping cart and I can't decide...

S4 amoled screen broken

Hey everyone!
Longtime lurker/first time post here. I have had the very unfortunate experience of pulling my S4 out of my pocket to check the time only to have my heart and jaw drop at the sight of a broken screen. It seems to be the same problem that others have reported where the glass is fine but the touchscreen is cracked, starting on the right side directly at the power button.
I have NEVER dropped this phone. It has been handled with great care at all times. It was always in an Otterbox Defender series case. Nothing out of the ordinary has happened to it while in my pocket (bumping into something, etc) and there was never anything else in the pocket with it. I have really enjoyed this phone and was mindful of it at all times.
So... where do I go from here? I'm looking for some good advice before I take a next step in trying to get a replacement. I do not have insurance on the phone (yeah, I know), but the price each month plus the deductible for a refurbished phone didn't sound like a great deal to me since I'm able to take care of my things for the most part. If it was an accident, I'd bite the bullet and replace the screen myself or get a new phone but this either a design flaw or a manufacturing defect. Has anyone here had success through Sprint or Samsung in getting a replacement or repair? I'm rooted and running The Blu Kuban right now. Do I need to try to ODIN back to stock for warranty purposes before doing anything from here or is there a better option for me? The phone works but I can't see or operate the screen in anyway.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Google... 1st search result.
Are you a homeowner? Try your homeowner insurance. I added coverage for my phones, tablets, and laptops that cover all loses. I think it only added $15 a year to my cost and the deductible is only $25.00 on a replacement. Maybe your insurance may cover the cost of a replacement phone.

Thanks for the useful reply Joe! How did I possibly forget to search for information on the subject before going through the trouble of making my first post on XDA despite being here for awhile?
Seriously... Read the thread. Its filled with disagreements as to what has been successful and turns into accusations of being too rough on the phone. I was asking if anyone here has successfully gotten their phone replaced and what to best method of going back to stock would be without being able to use the screen at all.

I know when I got my replacement for my evo 3d it wasnt refurbished it wasn brandnew still in the box and seals were not touch.Im hoping that the flaws in the screens are just because it was early in production.

More and more insurance companies are offering tech insurance and it is very affordable. I don't carry Sprint's insurance either (bad experience many years ago) I generally just keep my newest 'old' phone as a replacement in the event my new phone gets broke or dies.
It pays to shop around (or google) in trying to find good ways to insure devices. I realize this doesn't help you in your current predicament but perhaps for future reference.
You might search youtube for similar experiences which might tell you how they were fixed or offer affordable solutions for replacement.
Good luck.
Search YouTube for complete galaxy s4 teardown. A replacement screen and digitizer and frame is about $241. I've watched the 37 minute process on the video and feel it is way beyond my skill and patience. I don't know what else to tell you other than insurance might have made this easier and more affordable. Depending on where you go, who you deal with, who you talk to, this process can be expensive and full of hassle. Might I suggest, when you do get a replacement, that you invest in a tempered glass screen protector. There are topics in the accessory section on this topic. It will help protect your device better than simple screen film.

The one common theme in all these broken amoled screens under the glass are pocket users. Not one of these posts have come from someone that uses a case with holster. The gorilla glass on these phones is very strong, but the screen underneath can flex while in your pocket. I know everyone says they don't abuse their phone, haven't bumped it in their pocket, don't carry anything else in their pocket, but something that is happening is flex. With the plastic back of these phones they will definitely flex while you sit, bend, walk, or whatever during your normal routine. The amoled screen probably has a limit to the amount of flex it can handle before it fails. I know, you didn't abuse your phone but calling it a manufacturers defect is just ridiculous. Suck it up, fix or replace your phone, and next time don't put it in your pocket.

Just to clear this up... I did say design flaw or manufacturers defect. I've had many phones over the last 15 years. I have never had one break in anyway except for my Samsung Epic 4g, which took a 2 story fall (while in my pocket lol) onto a very hard surface. All it did was crack the screen a bit but was still functional for the next year until my contract was renewed.
To say that I should expect a $650 dollar phone in an Otterbox case to completely break to the point of not being able to use it just by being in my pocket in normal everyday situations is RIDICULOUS.
Should consumers really expect this level of quality? Imagine if a salesperson told you this as you were thinking of buying a phone... "Now just to let you know, never keep this phone in your pocket and then sit or walk because it'll break."
If this phone breaks in peoples pockets and isn't intended to be there, then Samsung would've/should've provided holsters with the phone.
Straight from Samsung - "Offering a highly crafted design with a larger screen and improved battery life, the sleek and innovative Galaxy S4 is slimmer yet stronger, with less to hold yet more to see." Sounds like we should expect a strong, well made phone. Not a something that will break this easily. My phone looks exactly like 4 other pictures I have found of other user's broken screens... all at the exact same spot. I maintain that this is either a design flaw or manufacturer's defect. Yes, as you said - the gorilla glass is strong. I just wish they would of made the frame stronger. Then I'd still have a working phone.
Btw, I am an unabashed Samsung fanboy. TVs, last 3 phones, monitors, etc. I talked 4 different people into getting this phone after I had it. I think normally Samsung makes great products with a high level of quality but they made a mistake on this one. I'm no longer looking forward to the S5 that comes with the required fanny pack... well, not until they make this situation right.
Now... does anyone have any info on my question on returning to stock? Thanks!
This is a tough one. I'd suggest at least attempting to contact Samsungs warranty dept. Perhaps they can offer a better solution than sprint.
Back in the Treo days I actually sent in a phone or two to palm, and got refurbished replacements.
The tough part is your defect.
I provide warranty work for appliances, manufacturers know or believe they know how and why something has failed. Glass stove tops are a prime example. Whirlpool will only cover heat fractures. I have to submit pictures of the top and, 99% of the time, the claim is rejected. Mostly because these tops break from impact or improper installation.
Point being, if you send your phone to Samsung, they may not cover it. But if you're optimistic and patient a few minutes on the phone may yield positive results.
http://m.samsung.com/us/support/service/warranty/SGH-T959HABTMB
Definitely unroot and return to stock.

Review After Having the Phone for 6 Days

OK my short review from having the LG G4 for 6 days now! Just as background, I luckily got the phone through a workmate i know in South Korea so the one i have is the South Korean model. Also, the South Korean version gives you something that is a bloody lifesaver and just so useful and you wish you'd always had one: an extra battery. More on that later.
So I have been using the Nexus 6 since launch and love it. To me at least it's been great – big screen, big development on XDA (I love custom roms/kernels and flashing in general) and over all a phone that i have loved. The only issues i have had really are: the screen is ok but could be better, the camera is ok and could be better and it is heavy and hefty so I use it one-handed but only just. It's a monster!
So last few months have been looking for something not quite as big with a better camera and better screen. I tried both the S6 and S6 Edge and sold them within a few days. Mostly because i think they are just too small and poky or something. S6 Edge was too sharp for me.
Along comes the G4! And if you don't want to read the boring detail below then in short: I love it and haven't really seen any faults at all.
Boring Detail:
Battery:
Here's a tricky one as i have always had decent battery on all phones i get. And all i do is read the same thing over and again on battery threads everywhere: 'i get only 2 hours Screen on Time help!' and then 'i get 7 hours Screen on Time and i'm amazing!'. The problem is the same: every person's usage pattern and apps and mobile reception is different so this all accounts for differing Screen on Time. So – FOR ME – i am getting consistently around 5 to 5.5 hours Screen on Time which is perfectly fine. So i reckon on MOST of the current flag ships you'd be getting pretty similar SOT.
However the one big bloody glaring thing about the South Korean model is that extra battery and that right there should solve pretty much ALL battery issues. So I just have the extra battery in the charging case attached to a USB cable on my computer. If I have gotten low on a day where i have the used phone a lot then 38 seconds later i have swapped batteries for the new 100% one! How good is that! Do yourself a favour and get a spare battery! No doubt they will be available shortly.
Two things that reviews are singling out as ‘cons’ which I think is just silly.
Wireless charging. I love wireless charging and until you use it a lot you don’t realise how convenient it is. I also have two Tylt Vu chargers and they are expensive so i want a device that uses wireless charging! Ok so the G4 has wireless charging CAPABILITY meaning that you need a different back than the one that comes with it and it will work.
Already LG has said that the G4 circle case will have that. So all I will be doing is waiting for the inevitable Shenzen rip off sticker that you stick inside your case that gives me wireless charging. I will give it 4 weeks max before they are on Ebay for $5.
Quick charging. There’s this boring debate that the G4 did not include Quick Charging 2.0 even though Qualcom have it in their chip. Big deal! What you do get is the 1.8 Quick Charge which isn’t quite as good but is still perfectly acceptable! In my testing it charges a bit over 1% per minute. Which is just fine.
Feel:
Sorry about the pretentious term ‘feel’ but it’s the best way of describing a major kick ass thing this phone has! It is just the BEST weight, feel and hold of any phone i’ve owned. It’s not light, it’s not heavy. It’s not small and it’s not phablety big. It is juuuuuuuust right. Dunno what it exactly is – maybe the slight bend? But it’s great.
Leather. I would never in a squillion years think i would own a leather phone or that the leather would work. But it does. Looks good, feels great, is great. Photos do not do it justice. I got the black weather which i love but if i was to buy it again the brown/tan i think could be the pick. If you get the plastic to save a few bucks then, um, don’t!
Camera:
Not going to go into detail because every review already has and i am not a manual camera person. I am Mr Point and Shoot. Suffice to say it takes very good photos. Had it over the weekend at Adelaide with relatives and photos turned out great.
Lag/Stutter/UI Blah:
Ok so on EVERY phone i own i remove the stock launcher and install an aftermarket one because guess why? They’re better. Don’t understand why people cry about the OEM launcher when the aftermarket ones are installed within 16 seconds and are better anyway.
Stutter/lag – again this is another topic that i don’t understand. I really haven’t had a phone that suffered at all from this. I ALWAYS change the animation three options to 0.5 in Developer Options and this often is more than enough. Don’t need to be rooted and takes 14 seconds – why wouldn’t you do it? In general though, i have not had stutter or lag in this phone at all.
The Knock Code to turn on screen. Sorry but every phone that doesn’t have this should get that as a ‘con’. It is just soooo convenient. Love it.
Notification shade works well. Lots of options, lots of shortcuts to choose.
Notification light – a no brainer and dunno why the Nexus 6 didn’t have it and i had to install a custom ROM to get it. It works and works fine.
Ability to change nav bar buttons around and add a couple more. Love this as i always like my back button on the right not the left.
These little customisations are what really makes the UI i think. So handy.
Display:
Great. Bright and similar when i had the S6 as a stand out. Reviews have covered it pretty well too – is an excellent colourful display. LG got it right.
Sound:
Decent! I just don’t use my phone to listen to stuff except for headphones but is loud and ok. Not as good as HTC but good for a phone.
Weird big bloody LCD density:
Here’s a weird thing which no review has mentioned which is the only thing that really annoyed me: the density is 620! Meaning that things are huge! Everything looked like a huge fonted behemoth! And without root i wasn’t able to use the easy way of changing the density via build.prop and eventually had to do it via hooking it to the PC and using Android SDK tools and change it to 540.
Overall:
Found a phone that for me at least satisfied most of what i want in a phone very well. And i haven’t even missed using a custom rom because you can’t root it yet! Never thought i’d say that. So once everyone has it in a month then hopefully development will mean it is even better!
Oh and get the effin leather purlease!!
Thank you for this nice review! Really appreciate it
That was a bloody useful review. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. I'm on a GN4 but as usual itching for my 6 month change...
Q how is the speakerphone? GN4 is excellent. Is it loud? I was a little disappointed by the g3.
The.pixel density issue is interesting. I loved the g3, but for some reason I found it difficult to read text. Even when I changed the size. Partly it's my middle age eyesight but it's not an issue i suffer from with the galaxy note series or even s5. Could never figure out why I found the g3 difficult to read. Perhaps it's that pixel density.

Yes the speaker is definitely loud. It is on the back of the phone though and is just one speaker. I wouldn't say quality is great but definitely loud.
Yes so weird about the LCD density! But yeah if you like big text then all good.
Great review, we are all hopeful we get root, bootloader unlock and Roms as well.
After installing the alternative home launcher, have you had any issues with the Knock On or Knock Off feature?

Nope knock on/off works great still with alternative launcher.
I have read in only 1 review the leather is kind of poorly attached to the plastic back. How nice is the leather attached? Does it wrap around the edges and conceal any plastic back? Clean install?

Seriously it's great. Photos don't do it justice though. It's hard leather but looks and feels really sturdy and just matches the phone.
It doesn't wrap around all the edges though.

So what does it do? I must wrap all the way around the edges of the plastic back it is attached it? if it does not, it would peel up. I am talking about wrapping around all of the edges of the plastic back so NO plastic back is seen along the edges. Not wrapping around the entire phones back

This is great news thank you for confirming this, appears that owners of the G3 and G2 were forced to use 3rd party apps to enable one or both of those features when using an alternative home launcher. Im assuming you are using Nova Launcher, I have also always installed that stable application on top of whatever manufacturer I buy.
What is something that has surprised you the most about the G4?
Any feature or something unique from that phone that reviewers or users have not thought of bringing up?

Any feature or something unique from that phone that reviewers or users have not thought of bringing up?

Surprised is definitely me loving the leather when I thought it would be too garish.
The only thing reviewers haven't brought up was that annoying LCD density!

Ok yeah.... as I had expected and hoped.. it does wrap around the edges of the battery door. So, you do not see the leather end and then some plastic of the back battery door. And, agreed, and as expected, it does not wrap leather up around the edges of the phone, just the battery door - so it is a nice clean finish.

Can you expand a bit on how you addressed the density? I know you said "hooking it to the PC and using Android SDK tools and change it to 540.". I would modify in build.prop as you mentioned, but no root so no way so I am not so sure what you mean here how you accomplished this tweak.

Great thanks.. IF the opportunity arises, it would be cool to see a before and after photo of your text size density.
Can the G4 turn Chrome into a free floating window?
Great review, very informative.
I passed on the G3 after really liking the G2 mostly due to the locked BL. I hope LG provides the ability to unlock it this time around like Sony and HTC do.
Or someone here cracks it much faster than it happened on the G3 which took what seemed like forever.

Thanks for the link. Do the dock and lock screen icons work on stock launcher using this method. On the G3 they didn't scale correctly?
What buttons can you change/add to the nav bar? Can you add a menu button?
Is there any sign of the lollipop memory leak?
