[Q] Windows 8 Developer Preview in HTC Shift - Shift General

I know... our umpc is a bit older now, but i'm trying to give a new chance for it, now with Windows 8 Developer Preview. I got a relative sucess... I'm running this os, with tablet pc input working, with snapvue with 3g and wi-fi acess. But i'm facing a big problem with the video driver. I tried reinstall many times, but i can't get it work ok. Anybody got sucess with the video driver?
Sorry for my bad english.... i'm brazilian...

How did you get window 8 to install. I try and it said the shift did not meet the hardware rquirement.
I copy the iso on to a tumbdrive and mount it on a virtual drive for the installation process.
Peter

I downloaded the iso from de MS site. I used the USB image creator which is used to install the windows 7 in notebook. Restarted the machine, press f10 and enter in the setup... my htc is basic 40 gb hd and stock 1gb of ram...

camargomaia: i think it's possible, Windows 7 works fine and Windows 8 are (not for first look) still similar. Tomorrow i will try it, now i got two pieces of htc shift. Did you success with install all of default Vista drivers? Touchscreen is Working? thanks

Every is working, and the speed is very good. The only trouble is the video driver. In the process of setup our shift try hi-resolutions, that it not support, and this causes a instant reboot, similar that we had when trying to install the windows 7, with the aero enabled.
I thing that problem may be here, the windows 8 doesn´nt have the classic theme (windows 2000 theme)...
Let´s try to make this work, our old pc can beat the ipads, in some specs...

My Shift works fine now! I downloaded the drivers from the intel site and now everything is working! Our PC can run Windows 8!

Can you post a link for the driver you used?
What other drivers do I need to download before installing.
Is snapvue working?
Thanks

Everything works: snapvue, bluetooth, wi-fi, 3g, resolution changer, etc... and the speed felling is very good!
Good friday for everybody! Greeting from Brazil!

I posted a guide I wrote up in the Shift Development forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17602535
The guide includes links to all the drivers I have used and the process I followed to get Windows 8 running on the Shift from a totally clean install.
As with camargomaia's parallel experiences, once all the drivers are installed the Shift very usable in Windows 8. Even in it's stock RAM limited state.

That is the same driver I used. The driver is also good if want to run Metro or the desktop at 1152*864 (so all the Metro apps that need a minimum of 1024*768 will run).

Thanks for creating the guide! Great Job!

Manual for how to flash a rom in Vista

O.k. for everyone who's traying to Flash in Vista
Donwload the files from this link: http://rapidshare.com/files/38401715/Manual_and_files.rar.html
and extract them in a new created folder like for example your desktop. Extract the USB Modem Vista in a different folder on your desktop (easy to find)
- put your device in bootloader mode (press and hold power, light and softreset button)
- connect the MDA to your computer.
- open computer management (devicemanager) in vista, rightclick computer in startmenu and select manage (see step 1)
- in computermanager open devicemanager (step 2)
- follow step 3 and 4.
After step 4 browse to the folder where you extracted the USB Modem Vista and choose next.
It will install the active sync drivers to vista and you will be able to flash.
I attached a exit bootloader file to exit bootloader mode (you can also install drivers without flashing the device)
YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO EXIT BOOTLOADER MODE!!!! EVEN BEVORE FLASHING!!!!
If you do it properly it will be done in less than 4 minutes.
Good luck.

Nope. In Vista with current drivers and updates the driver cannot be updated to an older one; neither in bootloader mode (uknown USB device) nor in standard mode (PocketPC).

Don't hate if you're a noob With Vista
Download my package and see for yourself mate!
I run Vista Business for almost 6 months and I'm flashing trough Vista for quite a long time now. Even now after upgrading the Windows Mobile Device Center.
So as far as I know your post is based on nonsence!!!
As I've said many many times, you have to do it exacly the way I wrote it.
Pro to noob
for your info, I've been using Vista for about two years.
building and flashing ROMs for 3 years now.
I do not argue with possibility to flash ROM in Vista.
I do argue with possibility to use your instruction universaly in all standard Vista installations.
I've seen and tried both possibilities myself.
Universal in boot mode:
"The best driver software for your device is already installed.
Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date.
Uknown Device."
Have you ever seen this message? I doubt.
I've seen that message when you don't do it correctly.
I'm not going to discuss with you if it works or not. And as far as being a pro... been working at microsoft for 6 years. Cheers mate! and good luck flashing building or whatever it is that you do.
Nonesence Again.

I was using vista since beta1, and i have been using WMDC since its beta stages. And i do have to confirm the method with updating your drivers with AS ones works Perfectly. Try again, but dont search for drivers, update it manualy, AND, dont forget to untick ALLOW USB CONNECTION in WMDC before pluging in a bootloaded device. That really does work a charm.
But what about Vista 64 version? This driver don't want to install on Vista 64...

About how to install XP in shift

I ve tried many times to install XP in shift, but finally not success. When the process of XP files were copied, it cannot access to XP install page. Said:error loading operating system. Whats matter? Can anybody tell me how to put xp in shift? Thanks a lot!
P.S I used external DVD-ROM to have a try, but not success as well
HAve you read the very long thread on this site about XP? If not, you should - it contains all the info you need.
Be prepared to spend days and days going around in circles...finally to decide mulitple time to Fn F3 and reload Vista...at least that's my experience....life is too short - just put up with crappy Vista would be my recommendation.
best thing for the Shift
I installed it a couple of days ago. The shift feels like a new machine. Incredibly fast compared to Vista.
The only thing i´m missing now is the resolution changer (I´m working on it), everything works the same or better than with Vista.
I´ll write a step by step how-to when I have some free time in the next few days.
Good luck
Thanks!
Thanks for your answers! I will learn more about shift here.

Oh stuff it, I'm going to try again with XP - will be a week or so away but now this WiFi issue has got me stumped I might as well try XP once more....anyone use the Tablet patch as linked ot here previously? I have XP normal, and XP Tablet but wonder whether I might be better to use the patch on normal XP (the Tablet CD is scratched real bad....hence why I got errors with msi last time)....
Yes, I used the patch. It works fine.

Me too I'm in queue waiting for a step-by-step (monkey-proof ) guide to get XP on Shift.
Have a nice day
I couldn't get the tablet patch to install on XP Pro, I ended up wiping and installing XP Tablet. But it does all work correctly now, I have a dual boot Shift with Vista and XP with everything working as it should.
All the needed drivers and info are available on the forum, it can be done...
Hi all...well, I gave it another go after cleaning the CD and I got a great install of Tablet. I installed the HTC drivers, excluding the VGA one (used the one on the XP thread) and now I have a very fast and clean Shift. I have written notes I will commit to putting them up here soon. My biggest issue now is I simply cannot get pof's tool to work.
Downloaded cygwin (had to copy lot's of dll's to /windows)...and it seems to runs fine, and it seems I can install and uninstall ioperm....however when I double click pof's .exe I get a flash on the screen and then nothing. What should happen?
If someone can help me undertstand how to install this properly I will be most grateful and I will add the steps into my descriptions. Unfortunately I am not at the coding level and descriptions so far are too complex to date...
Thanks...
Same here, I haven't been able to get the GUI to run.
But it works when you issue the commands manually.
I installed cygwin and ioperm (didn't need to copy any dll's anywhere), and copied pofs hsect2.exe file into the \cygwin\bin folder.
Then you can run cygwin and type the following:
To enable wifi:
hsect2 -W 1
To enable Bluetooth:
hsect2 -B 1
To enable both:
hsect2 -W 1 -B 1
Change the 1 to 0 to turn them off.
It's not perfect, but it does the job.
Problem solved
Thanks to the thread by febelus...Last night I ve finished my XP installation. Anybody needed please refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=386965&highlight=shift+install+xp
ALEX
OK - thanks Pantaloonie - now can activate WiFi but drivers cannot start device...can I ask what drivers you used? I simply installed the Vista HTC Drivers which I suspect is not right. I also tried the simple driver package for XP and that too doesn't work. I do note the WiFI light comes on...which is cool (now only if it work actually work )
I also notice if I install the wider Cygwin pack it kills my touchscreen...will try with bare minimum and ioperm.
I am so close and XP is such a joy - I very much hope I can resolve this final issue! Thanks so far....
Bluetooth working well now....only thing left is WiFi....drivers seem to be the issue. Keep getting Device Cannot Start error...problem loading drivers....
Do I need to apply any .sys drivers to the root as per originally thought?
After a bottle of Pinot the whole thing is running as per Vista. Screen is so much better, crisper etc. WiFi was solved by copying sdbus.sys in recovery console mode. Drivers then installed.
BUT, again I WiFi issues. I did in Vista, and I do in XP....I believe now, after all this time (about 30 hours solid) that I have a burnt out WiFi chip. It "works" but no signal can be picked up...such a shame. Only option now is to buy an SD Car WiFi....another blasted $80!!
Anway, I will type up my XP install for others to follow over next few weeks (bit busy right now)...it's actually not as hard as it seems....thanks to those specific guys involved in getting XP on the Shift...it is sooooo much better than Vista!!!

Found WinXP Shift Webcam Driver!

After many hours of searching, I've found the correct Webcam driver for the Shift X9500 model (i.e. 0c45&PID_62c0). This one is tested and verified to work. Tried several others, didn't work. It is the exact same driver used on Acer Aspire notebooks. I've repackaged it for all to use. Please note, it will come up on your Device Manager as "Acer Crystal Eye webcam" -not to worry, it works perfectly! Oh, and it's actually a Sonix driver, but still no model number to download the Sonix equivalent from http://www.sonix.com
http://rapidshare.com/files/214304160/SonixShiftCamDriverXP.zip.html
Please can someone host this download somewhere else as RapidShare says its 10 downloads have been used up already
Thank you!
Why do you need these drivers? I didn't need to install any drivers for web-camera. I think XP has drivers for it. When I installed XP (SP2 and SP3) the drivers were installed automatically and it is working perfectly at least with Skype.
my camera driver was auto recognized by windows update
Ah, well I haven't got as far as any windows updates yet... I need actually to reinstall Windows anyway as the chipset driver failed to load and after about 15 different attempts to load it now, doesn't make any difference... so I have to sit for another evening waiting for WinXP to install.
On the bright side I have finally got XP to install so am hopeful about everything else working too!
I can confirm that WinXP does indeed have software for the webcam - but only with SP2 or better. Of course you need SP2 to install the rest of the XP drivers anyway as I discovered the (very) long way!
webcam driver is optional
this webcam driver is optional in case you want to see something else other than "usb webcam" in your "imaging devices" list of windows xp. it isn't needed, but just an enhancement. i've never had a problem with rapidshare, let's you download files every 15minutes, better than most other hosting sites.
Hi, I stumbled upon this post as I badly need the HTC Shift webcam driver. Do any of you still have a copy? Can you guys give me a link? Or can you point me to any direction?

Windows 7

Hey guys,
Reviewed alot of the posts here, but can't find out what the status is with the native functionality of cell modem access on Win 7...
I just got Windows 7 Pro installed (it isn't the beta, or hacked, it's retail), Everything is working (touchscreen, aero, etc...) with the exception of the native cell modem internet sharing.
I do know there is a hack by using the USB tool to get it working, however I'm just curious if anyone has it working the proper way as intended by HTC?
I'm noticing there are no devices missing drivers in the device manager, the HTC control app works fine, and even can control the modem on the snapvue side of things...
But there is still no "virtual" network adapater inside of the Network adapters on the system...
Scratch that...
I'm a tool. My shift has been sitting for 6 months after not being used until today when I decided to upgrade...
Totally forgot the virtual adapter only shows when no other connections are present...
Everything is working now
Hi!
How did you get the TS to work?
I've been trying to get the touchscreen to work with the latest W7 but no soceess. I've followed the guide on XDA and all tips on XDA but no sucess.
Could you maybe write down how you did even if it was just a regular installation? I've reinstalled and all but the ts just won't work!

To be honest, I was an idiot and had a horrible install... Here's what I did if you dare try..
1. Install all the drivers (NOT using compatibility mode and "Run as Admin")
Only a few things worked, it was horrible...
2. Re-installed ALL the drivers, using the list that HTC recomends. Keep in mind that the device manager will show some of the devices as not working, after you install all the drivers in Compatibility mode, along with "Run as admin". Go to the Device manager, and right click on all the problemtic devices and select "Uninstall".
3. Restart the computer, then Aero will start bluescreening and crashing. Boot into safemode (with networking). Go to the device manager and disable both Video card adapater shown.
4. restart and go to Intel's website and download the latest Chipset INF installer, and Video drivers for windows 7. Install the Chipset INI first, then video drivers...
5. At this point I can't remember but I thinnk the touchscreen didn't work. I just ran the Touchscreen installer one last time, and BANG it worked...
Sorry for my horrible instructions, it was a messy install, but everything is working for me now.
Thanks!
I't looks similar to how i've been fooling around with my shift.
Well, at least it's gratifying to know that i may get it to work if keep messing with it

Hi just have a quick question: When you upgraded your vista to Win 7, do you used the upgraded disk or start from the OEM win 7?
I actually didn't upgrade.
I used a Open Business Volume disc I have that was issued to my company. I guess it's the same thing as a retail copy.
I did a fresh install.

Thanks! It is OEM Disk. And one more think are you install the Win 7 pro or the ultimate? Thanks again. I really appreciate your help.
I could be wrong, but I think I did Win 7 Pro
Thanks again...I will try to install win7 pro on mine. I think 7 ultimate for Shift is too much coz the processor itself is only 800Mhz.

[Q] Windows 7 updates

Hi all,
I just installed a fresh copy of win7 ultimate on my HTC shift and installed all drivers because the old install was getting sluggish. Everything works except for two things: interpolated high resolution gives a blue screen crash when aero is active (no transparency) and the windows basic theme is UGLY. And the second problem: after I install like 85 windows updates shag control center crashes and have to restore a system recovery point. Do you know what update causes this so i can hide it and install the rest?
Many thanks,
Pelle

Which drivers did you use? I hope you are not using the Windows Vista drivers. Download the Shift Windows 7 drivers from this link http://azsharing.com/yvex8pwmz01j/SHIFT.zip.html. Install the Windows 7 drivers discussed in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=590009. The sequence of installing them is precise including those that you need to install in Vista Compatibility mode and with Admin Privilleges. As the OP stated some of the drivers will be installed through Windows update but check which ones. Follow the recomendations in that thread and all will work like a charm...
I believe your Shag Control problems and all display problems are related to the drivers and not Windows update. Mine is on automatic updates and I have not excluded any updates at all save for the Language Pack that I do not need....
Re-install the drivers and lets see what happens after that. By the way DO NOT ENABLE AERO BEFORE INSTALLING THE GRAPHICS DRIVERS otherwise you get BSOD....... That advice is shown as Important in the thread mentioned above. Enable aero theme as the last thing you do with all drivers installed to avoid any problems.
I hope you get sorted and enjoy your Shift with Windows 7......
Edit>>>> There is a way to disable Aero when facing your current BSOd situation through Screen Resolution Settings but I dont remember the precise steps. I can retrace the steps on my Shift once I get to it after work and see whether that will help you. But let me know whether re-installing the drivers will have sorted you out>>>>>
Hello,
I used the driver sequence at gadgetmix (sorry, i can't post links yet) because it worked fine a year ago and the drivers from the HTC website in vista compatibility mode and run as administrator.
With reinstalling do you mean that I have to uninstall the old driver and install the new one or can i just install the new driver over the older one?
Thanks
Pelle

Best is to uninstall and then install afresh using Windows 7 drivers..... Perhaps even check box to delete the old driver as well. If Aero was off during installation you dont have many problems. Aero on during 7 upgrade especially before graphics driver update causes Bsod or boot loop.
You should be ok when you install the windows 7 drivers. But the sequence of driver installations is important.... All the best
Have been fiddeling with the drivers for a while now and given up. just started Windows 7 setup again. After that i will use the windows 7! drivers and hope for the best.

EDIT: windows just installed. Turning off Aero and starting drivers... Fingers crossed
Drivers just finised and now the sond doesn't work
Tried rolling back/ updating driver, reinstalling driver muting unmuting in windows and shift control center but no luck...
And when I press the resolution changer I have to reboot to switch resolution.
shift control center has to be selected from start menu to start
This is a lot worse than when i did it using the tutorial at gadgetmix
Any idea how to fix this?

Sorry to hear about the problems you are facing. I am surprised coz I did the Windows 7 installation just a few weeks ago after reviving my dead Shift and everything is working perfectly for me. The only thing I havent fully sorted out is Finger print thing but I know I only need an hour or 2 with it and all will be well.
Incidentally did you do a clean install of 7 or you upgraded Vista?
Since you have just done a fresh install and you dont stand to lose much I would advise that you re-install Vista (F3) which will install all the drivers then Upgrade Windows 7 from the freshly re-installed Vista. You can then install drivers for any device that will show not to be installed after 7 upgrade.... Of course following the sequence and allowing Windows Update to take care of the rest.

The problem is that i once had to replace my HDD because some idiot dropped my shift and for some reason the accelerometer didn't kick in and trashed my hard drive. So pressing F3 won't do anything. Are there any other solutions?
DID IT! It was in my windows 7 install disk. Thanks a lot for all of your help! I will be hanin round here to help others. I AM SO HAPPY EVERYTHING IS FINE WITH MY LOVELY SHIFT! Updates Sucseeded and everything works perfect!
Only one more question: is it safe to install sp1? Or will that give problems with some of the drivers.

Glad you finally managed to get your Shift up to speed. I always felt that your peculiar issue boiled down to bad install which is confirmed by the first software you used. What type of disk did you use for the Hdd replacement - Hdd or SSd and for what capacity. Been thinking of upgrading but Ssd costs are still up there in teh skies and might not justify upgrading for the ageing Shift....
You can update to Service Pack 1 no problem. I have it and no issues at all.

I Bought the exact same drive on ebay for $30 or so. I solved the hard drive light staying on by just running CHKDSK but now the same programs just crash...
It now happens when trying to do a system score, when changing my network to public and when uninstalling a program using control panel. The rest all works fine.
