Why does my DZ fail me when I need it the most - G2 and Desire Z General

Now I love my DZ; it is by far the most capable phone I've ever owned, but it has this nasty habit of failing me whenever I seem to need it the most.
For example, today I was stuck behind a huge accident on the highway with an exit coming up in a few feet. I thought, "hey I'll just see if I can find a detour around it from this exit." Pulled out my phone and quickly launched google maps. right then, it completely stops responding to all touch input; the trackpad and physical buttons work fine, but nothing was registering on the touchscreen or capacitive buttons. I eventually had to pull the battery to fix the issue.
It just seems that these things tend to happen whenever i need to lookup something quickly on the phone (when im just screwing around on it, it works perfectly fine) be it completely not responding to touch input, or something weird happening like getting stuck between 2 homescreens, or the notification panel gets stuck halfway down, or massive input lag (5+ seconds) to the point of it not being usable.
And everything goes back to normal after a reset; but by then, I usually don't need to lookup whatever it was anymore.
The most frustrating part is that I can't seem to figure out whats causing it. I'm running virtuous 2.0.0 without any sense 3 additions, and I generally only have 1 or 2 tasks going on on the phone at once (usually just music player + whatever I'm doing). I originally thought it was just a performance issue, so I've increased the clock up to 1.5ghz (using daemon controller) but it hasn't has of an effect.
Any ideas on what else i can try?

Sounds like simple bad karma, I suggest donating to a charity or going to church
Other than that, I'd have no idea, sorry. Seeing as its not totally regular, there'd be no good way to easily pinpoint the issue. Maybe see if the rom produces a last_kmsg?

although people say roms are 'stable' and can recommend these ROMs as "dd" (daily drivers) you cannot say that will be completely reliable. This is because when people say a ROM is 'stable', it's only after using it for 2-3days; unfortunately, roms gather clutter and begin to slow down over time. Not a problem for many flashaholics, but a problem if you're a one-rom kinda guy (or girl). So if you're not one-night-stand rom kind of person, here are some tips:
Reset your phone regularly. Phones start acting funny when they've been on for too long
Try stock ROM with addons flashed on top of it, rather than baked in a new rom
Most reliable roms i've experienced are Stock Gingerbread or CyanogenMod. Try those
If you are flashing a new rom, use SuperWipe, this can help get rid of clutter from old roms

Hmm, so you believe that this is purely a rom issue?
I havent run a stock rom for a while, but from what i remember the experience wasnt that pleasant, there was significant lag almost everywhere in the ui. Although i will admit that was back with froyo; i havent tried a stock gb stock rom yet.
Ill probablygive cm7 a go. Ive just grown so used to some sense features that its going to be hard for me to give them up (mainly recent apps in notifications, news widget, t9 dailer+manually linking contacts, and remote ring and forward on htcsense.com)
Has anyone had similar issues running virtuous sense 2.0.0?

As far as recent apps goes, long pressing the home button is a standard feature of android that brings up the most recent. Stock is the last 8 (I think) cm7 can show 15.

Higher overclocking will make your phone LESS stable, not more. I'd stick around 1 GHz, as this is known to be very stable on most Z's, and usually does not result in any significant additional battery drain. OC may not have anything to do with your random hangs, but its probably not helping either.

I'd agree. I really wouldn't ever go over 1.2ghz for a daily driver personally.
I run my ROMs at 800mhz lol, so I don't see the advantage of a huge overclock unless you're just bragging about benchmark scores.

its funny when u wanna show off your phone and you take it out of your pocket acting all cool and stuff and when u press the power button it wont wake up or you get a blank screen
haha its just bad karma for u like nipqer said

Try the stock pre-rooted gingerbread...I just flashed t last week and it is way faster than my froyo was, and amazing battery life, for me anyways, I do have an extended life battery though lol. Anyways as far as speed it is snappy on 800 mhz

I've noticed the random hangs / glitches @ 800Mhz and 1Ghz, so I'm hesitant to say that the OC is the cause.
What do you use for stability testing? I've been running quadrant nonstop to test new OCs, but I don't think that benchmark stresses the cpu enough.

i am running Virtuous v2.0.0 w/ kernel unity v6 on it on desire z.
i've found bugs like
1/the top black bar ui, top left corner, some times i see the background wallpaper rather than the black bar. but it goes away if i pull down the notifications.
2/ the mail with microsoft exchange active sync, if i delete the mail it will automatically resync and downloads all mail including the on i deleted. but i got around that by using pop/imac instead.
all rather minor as i got ways to go around it.
i did have a similar issue where the touch screen goes unresponsive and i had to force close it, restart phone to get it back alive. but then i readjusted the clock speed and never had it happened again.
the phone is at around 825mhz with governor smart ass on wake time max, unless im watching 720p movies on the phone then i ramp it up at 1.4ghz.
sleep time on 368mhz max with governor at conservative.
i had it on like this since 11/09/11 (as i made a rom backup) and it never occured yet.

I've been playing with the wake min and wake gov settings the past few days. I have it set at 600Mhz min, performance gov; I haven't noticed much difference in the battery life, but I'll have to do more extensive testing to be sure.
Performance feels slightly better, especially after a fast wake. can anyone give a detailed explanation of the behavior of the different gov settings? I can't seem to find much info on it.

Fresh average memory available?

Using the TasKiller widget, I average around 32M and the rom is just slow as hell.... sorry Flipz, but wow.
Going back to Damage, but before I do, anybody else have this problem? I have it killing everything pretty much.
Maybe its because I'm using Sense UI again?
im sittin at more than 70m...
dunno what else you got running.
i go from 60-84 all the time......i set the memory manager to strict and im using helix launcher with no lwp, couldnt be happier
I'm using sense (sorry, Im a fan) and with task killer set to kill everything but Music (for the widget) Mobile Defense, and AutoKiller. I average 50-60 with 72MB usually free after a fresh boot and killing all tasks that start at boot. That quickly deminishes though and hovers around 50-60. With damage control, I would average 90MB after a fresh boot and auto kill, and would stay around 80.
With 3-4 programs open (one of them being the browser) I average about 35MB with fresh. However with DC I was at 50-60.
I'm using "Moderate" settings with AutoKill that came with fresh. Strict basically turned the phone into an iphone (no multitasking) I wouldn't have the browser and just about any other program running at the same time, defeats the purpose of having a multitasking phone.
The ROM is noticeably slower than damage control, however I was still having many bugs with even DC v2.05 so having a TRULY BUG FREE rom (fresh) is worth the little bit of slower performance.
I seem to agree that Fresh seems to be a more "complete" rom although they are very close.
I always just thought that Fresh's rom comes with a lot more programs (you can remove them, search). I know under Damage's I had a lot more memory, but I didn't have Sprint Football. I need to remove it, but I have been lazy so my avail. memory is under 50m usually, I haven't bothered cleaning it out just yet though.
If you go through and take out the stuff you're not using (even just sense/launcher/android home) maybe also the lock screens/clocks, you may be able to boost your memory a lot.

Having a truly bug free rom? When I am getting a text, the phone will FREEZE, and WAIT until the sound decides to play, then it will keep going.
Sometimes typing it will randomly freeze, then spit out a ton of text, then if I hit backspace, it will freeze again, erase it all, and then I have to VERY slowly type.
Its horrible. I'm sorry, but I have to go back to DC. I can't even use the phone.
Here is a good example, yesterday somebody called me, I missed the call because the phone stuck on the home screen with it ringing, finally when it popped up to answer, I hit ANSWER and it didn't do anything. Went to voice mail, I hit the missed call and it just sat there, then it flew to the call screen and then hung up right away (registered a few finger taps and decided I was hitting End Call too). Then I tried to call back, pressed the number 4 or 5 times. Finally got frustrated and threw the phone in the passenger seat. 3 minutes later it rang again and I hit the Answer button and it worked.
This is insane. God forbid I have to get an emergency call out.
Later Fresh ROM.
Wow.
I'm having a great experience with Fresh.
I have (currently) 8 apps open and I'm running 56mb Free.
No FC's at all.

Me too. Pretty sure there are far more folks who have low to no issues with this rom than there are folks who do.
With apps2sd I am running 64 megs.
Love this rom. No hitches. No glitches.
yall with task killers need to work smarter not harder and utilize the auto killer app and let it do all the killing based on the values in which android works....im on fresh 2.0d and really never dip below 70 or 80 and i dont run
a2sd and i really have no hiccups at all even running lwp...flipz him self said dont **** with a task killer thats prolly why the OP doesnt have alot of free memory
Dec 26: FAQ: Why You Shouldn’t Be Using a Task Killer with Android
And no offense taken. But you have to understand that DC and Fresh are based on the EXACT same build from Sprint. I use my own rom (obviously) and haven't experienced a single thing that you mentioned other than some keyboard lag, which is caused by the experimental keyboard that I put in.
And if you are still questioning speed then you can also check out...
Apr 3: Benchmarking Sprint 2.20.651.1 Based Roms
This is solid proof that the roms are the same. Get rid of your taskkiller, setup autokiller (which is a task killer in a different way. It controls when android does all that nifty stuff in the first link) and you'll have a better experience on every rom, whichever one you choose.
Out of curiousity flipz, what do you find has been the best setting for autokiller? I've been testing several out, just curious what you find works best.

Thanks . My mindset was Agressive would kill more, so I tried that one out. I used optimum for a while, but never moderate yet. I am probably misunderstanding the differences between each setting
I'm using the Aggressive as well, but I will let my pictures speak for themselves.

Exactly.
You can't really argue about one feeling more 'complete' than another one at this point. I gave flipz the Sprint leak, we both did our own customizations but they are basically the same thing. Everything is in your head. We both use the same keyboard (modded HTC one), and a LOT of it is the same stuff, so enough arguing about which one is better/worse. They really are based off the same thing now and have the same functionality. There is nothing that will run on mine that won't run on his, or anything on his that won't run on mine.
also we all use our phones very differently and run different things in combination with others so its really almost impossible to be like oh yea mines running better than yours cause one person may be all with the social networking and all that stuff and another might just need the bare basics...bottom line flash the roms that interest you and you will know what works for YOU
My phone has been running Fresh 2.0d for a few days now and with very minor changes to the base rom, it runs very smooth and fast. After having some issues with another rom I did a wrath of god level wipe on my phone and SD card, from that point on all my FC and lag issues stopped. If nothing else works I would suggest doing something along that line, start from scratch, purge everything, remake partitions etc., "Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure".
My RAM is usually around 60-70 free, but why is my internal phone memory so low after a fresh install of Fresh2.0d? I just got into rooting, tested out a few, sticking with Fresh, but my Internal memory is around 90 MB, without any other apps installed. Something wrong with this? On this page, dcdave63, shows a picture of internal memory with 131 MB free.

[HELP] Screen Blackouts, Freezes, and Reboots

I have had a rooted epic for a few months now and have been experiencing a lot of software difficulties recently. I am using Epic Experience Froyo, but I have switched to other roms and still experience the problems (which I have researched but have yet to find a cure). I have times where the screen will turn black and unresponsive, yet the capacitive buttons at the bottom are still lit up, and it will either restart the phone at the lock screen and regain signal or I will have to manually take the battery out. Sometimes I get the same issue except the screen just freezes. Other times (even if the phone is idle in my pocket) it will randomly reboot and I can feel it vibrating in my pocket. I have done many full factory resets w/oden. Everytime I get the problem it seems to gradually get more severe.
I would love for any input to work towards a solution.
Thanks,
Dylan.
Sounds exactly like the problems I was experiencing with my Evo. Do you overclock your phone by any chance? Or have you ever installed lagfix applications?
I overclocked once for about 2 days @ 1.2ghz, but then reverted to regular. For a long time I had Juice Defender installed.

Ok, so as far as juice defender is concerned, what are its performance characteristics? Did you ever use quadrant to see what it was putting up? I doubt the overclock for such a short period of time is what would've caused so many problems, but from my experiences, any of these add ons that take your quadrant and almost double it are usually ones that can cause some permanent damage on the phone. I used to run what was called Snap Turbo which was a performance tweaking apk attached to a linked kernal that used to go well with CM6. Well, turbo mode does exactly what ViperSpeed lag fix does. As soon as I started messing around with the Snap Turbo, that's when my screen used to become unresponsive, phone used to freeze, and I would get random reboots almost 10x per day. After I started experiencing these issues, I could never revert back to another Rom or even go back to stock without getting the same issues. I ended up getting rid of that Evo and getting another. As soon as I rooted my next one, random reboots started but not as frequently. Basically, I believe that rooting your phone is going to cause SOME issues. Constantly messing around with it will result in A LOT of issues. It's almost unavoidable and some folks are lucky enough to never experience any issues, but that's the risk you take if you want all the benefits that come with hacking the phone. I hope you find a setup on your phone that isn't so unreliable but I doubt there's anything you can do to completely fix it. I hope I'm wrong, though, because anything you do to fix those issues would be a great help to us all if we end up in the same boat in the future...God forbid!
Juice Defender mainly just altered settings with the wireless connectivity (Like stopping it from using wireless network when the phone is idle). I've also thought about this... I am using 3 different batteries, 1 is default battery, and the other 2 are of a cheap $10 ebay set.
hey guys...i was getting great battery life on di18 and dk28 but for the last week its sucked i loss on average 8-10% an hour (setCPU at 200-1000 ondemand and 200-200 sreen off) i have calibrated my battery twice and still no luck as soon as i take it off the charger it drops to 95% any thing else i can try? thanks for the help

[Q] Phone very slow, hang, unresponsive

Sometimes my phone will get very unresponsive such that any action takes many seconds to show up, and everything is very choppy. Often I see this when I wake up in the morning, but it happens often enough in general. It's so bad that I can't shut it down normally because it would take over 10 min (I've actually never waited to see exactly how long it would take). Thankfully I just found out about the three finger reset (volume up, camera, power), so I shouldn't have to pull the battery anymore, but it's still a problem.
I don't remember this happening before using custom roms. It happens with both DK28 roms I've tried - Bonsai and Viper. I believe it also occurred on the 2.1 Epic Experience, although I'm not sure. I guess I should try flashing to DK28 stock to see if that works, but it's a pain to set up everything each time. I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone else has had this problem and found a way to fix it. Also, I have a feeling this could be related to WiFi being turned on, but can't confirm yet.
My phone was stuttering yesterday.
But that was only after installing smartbench and using theonscreen keyboard.
However, since I've upgraded to dk28, the phone does take (relatively) forever to shutdown.
It'll go black but the bottom lights would still be on and then like a minute or two later it vibrates and actually cuts off

When my phone does this, it reminds me that I like to have SeePU installed. It's pretty useful in pointing out the apps that are hogging CPU and most likely slowing down your phone.
For me it's often Touchdown, and I kill it and things are back to normal.
I have found a few things that are useful. When I need to reboot my phone I use quick boot from the market. Works every time. In between I use fast reboot also from the market. Try them and see how they work.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Thanks for the app suggestions. I like the taskbar icons for SeePU. It's always been useful on my Mac (stats from iStat). Quick Boot makes things easier as well.
Next time my phone hangs, I'll see if some process is taking 100% CPU.
The phone hung again, and it seemed like something was taking 100% CPU, if the taskbar SeePU icon is to be trusted. I wasn't able to figure out what the culprit was though, because the phone pretty much stopped responding. Otherwise I would have loaded Android System Info to check.
can the epic 4g run this lag fix? if not, do we have any other ways to fix the lag?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784691
edit: nvm
So I was able to view Android System Info while my phone was hanging, but it did now show any processes taking 100% CPU, although the total CPU usage was 100%. My guess then is that the Android 2.2 OS is buggy.
However, I did find people who said leaving USB debugging on would fix it, so I'm going to try that.
For reference:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=826507
http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-support-troubleshooting/244553-100-cpu.html#post2140890
My phone hasn't hung for a while, so apparently enabling USB debugging prevents the hang / lag / crash / 100% CPU. Weird but I'm glad it works
Now the only problem is kswapd0 eating CPU sometimes. I think this is caused by lack of memory, but I'm not sure what I can do about it.

[Q] lags, high cpu and assorted sluggishness

I am using CMYLXGO's NAND stock Desire HD build. Its great. However, I am having so many lag issues. I seem to be one of the few that is experiencing this with the build so i turn to some of you to see if you have had similar issues with your phones.
Problems:
1. when auto populating apps (like using installer, uninstaller, managing applications in the system tab) the phone will take forever to pull up all the apps , the screen will cut off (because the screen times out) and when I hit the home button or any button to cut the phone back on it stays black.
2. every action makes the cpu run high. adding a widget to the home screen (apps populating issue again), changing screens really fast and other assorted minor processed.
I have stopped auto sync
I do not use auto rotate any more
I do not have any rogue processes for the most part
I don't understand why I seem to have these lag issues. Everyone else talks about how fast and fluid the build is. I am under the impression that with the build NOT being run from the memory card NAND would add to speed. This is not happening for me. If anyone has any idea why this is happening. I am convinced it is something on my end but I don't know where to start. I am open to suggestions.
I have 2.15 radio, 16 gig class 2 memory card.
Hmmm, not sure but have you tried another ROM similar to see if it does the same? You can also go into MAGLDR and wipe dalvik cache. I used this ROM and all was good for me. I have sense been using this one which is also working very well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976384&page=1
every version of this build has been tried. That is the part that gets me. differnt kernels don't help either. i have even used SetCPU and overcloced to try and get through some of the lag. it works, but it is only when I play games not when I need to perform uninstall or widget selection for the home pages. I use SeePU which is ususally shows my cpu strain in the bright orange (for high use). most of my processes/actions raise the cpu use to high levels. I never really operate in a green (or low) usage level no matter what the action is. I would really like to capitalize on the speed NAND is supposed to offer.
Personally I would try something else (a totally different ROM) and see if you are still getting the same results, maybe even revert back to a windows mobile rom just to see if you are still getting the hang up. Last option would be to restore your phone to stock and start over, reinstall HSPL 2.08 new radio, etc...etc...

yeah. but i did not at first. however, it is needed to stop some of the rogue processes. android.process.acore comes to mind.
I personally think this is one of the most stable builds around. I would rarely experience any lag, and if I did it would only last for seconds.

Believe me, I know. Everything is working in his build. GPS, MMS, easy to install - the works. This is why i really want this to work properly so I can use it, without the hiccups, as my daily build. It has to be something with my phone but I can't figure out what it is yet....
On Cmylxgo's build, the first time I loaded it, I had the laggy and unresponsiveness you described for the same reasons. What I found is that rebooting the system to off/on a couple of times when I first loaded the build, addressed the first initial lag and unresponsiveness. After doing a couple of reboots, I found the build as smooth as everyone says it is. I am now trying the GL Core v11 kernel and it gives an extra 300 pts to the Quadrant Score and seems to be a bit quicker than the Rafpigna 1.8 kernel that comes with the build. Also, standby battery drain seems to be a bit better with the hourly peaks at half what I see with Rafpigna. If rebooting a couple of times doesn't do it for you, I know trying another build which may not have all the bells and whistles as Cmylxgo, but it is worth a try to see if it makes a difference. For me at least Cmylxgo's stock Desire (HD)2 build is much faster and smoother than any of the MDJ SD builds I was using.

anyone knows how to disable to full screen when in landscape mode?
i cant seem to use my swiftkey tablet x now, which i was able to with GB.
Thanks!
Mine are not prbs but am yet to see most of the promised features to its full potential, Cant seem to find the new unlock screen features etc .. Just got my phone upgraded and exploring
SMS converting to MMS..
Does anybody know how to fix this issue?
ICS in Note
After upgrading to ICS via kies,
Battery seems to drain very fast.
Camera hangs up sometimes and other camera related apps like Instagram also but maybe the pic quality is little better.
It seems to crash when some other apps runs too.
Not sure if it was there before but I can pause music and video if I show my palm on the screen.
The screen rotates faster than in GB with a pause at the beginning though.
News fonts are good.
Window animations are good but still dont' know how to stop it since it might be draining battery fast.
Can use Chrome now and it's fast.
I cannot use Mass Storage Mode. I recieve a "Ui stopped to work" error.
I am facing,
1. High android OS usage. Sometime its higher than Brightness, and most of the time its highest usage of batt after brightness. (I read somewhere, it said its calculation errors, but I think its not, cause my battery no longer last that long.)
2. Camera will sometimes fail to operate. I really dunno what is wrong with that.
3. Phone just cant go into deep slp. Its being kept awake by some apps (Which I cant narrow it) Using BetterBatteryStats, I found out its I2_HSIC. (Whats this I2_HSIC ??)
I am using a 5400mAh mugen batt. previously on GB, my usage can last me 24hrs, now it can only last 16hrs or less. I installed lesser apps, and lesser widgets. Disable account sync and google backup. Settings more or less kept the same.
Overnight my batt can reduce by 21%, it never happened before. lol. ICS...
i say fck ics, lets go backto eclair

I have a bug I have not seen mentioned.
Occasionally, usually about 1 time per day, My phone display will start to flash, with random green and red colors. The screen I'm on, will flash those colors then star to shake and slide.
It looks like a television station not tuned quite right on an analog antenna (if anybody remembers that!)
I can't reproduce it regularly, but It think it has happened when going from an Application, back to the home screen using the home button.
I am on ICS, Taiwan, stock, not rooted.
Anybyody else seen this?

I faced this issue with stock ICS (rooted) .
I opened the browser to html5test.com , and the screen filled up with lines (similar to a TV noise) . Turning off did not seem to work, so i did a battery pull.
Unable to reproduce the problem so far!

I can get the screen back by just waiting it out. Usually takes about 2 minutes. I sure do wish I knew what was happening, though, so I could confirm no damage was being done.

As far as #2 goes, go to your battery stats and see if "media" is listed. If so, force close it and try again. Seems to work for me. I'm not sure if it is just me or not because I have been playing with settings lately, but the media scanner tends to run wild it seems (also seems to lend to battery drain).
I am just disappointed that they left out some of the nice features of ics like the updated gallery and camera. Seems kind of lazy to me and no wonder things arent working well if they are mix and matching gingerbread and ics rather than going all in and starting development from there. I would definitely go back to using one of the non tw ics roms if it weren't for the sod issues I was having...

Indian stock Rom:
- Battery life seems to be strange as sometime drain is too high and sometime i feel it's better then it was on GB. yet to track the exact pattern but in either case no wireless, no gps, no Bluetooth and Brightness @ 10%.
- opening contacts taking few seconds but now search on exchange server is well integrated.
-i have enabled 'face unlock' and sometime it will not respond at all so keep doing lock/unlock till get restored.
.......and I am unable to find s-note application, i tried under system/app as well but as don't know apk name not sure. can someone help pls.
me too
I also got that green bands screen you describe. I held down the lock button til the phone rebooted. I think I was using the Dolphin Browser at the time.

1. Poor battery.
2. Sync errors: calendar sync freezes up every once in a while
3. Brightness slider in notification bar gone, tasker can not effect change of brightness anymore, only choice is to keep automatic brightness on, otherwise blinded out in sun.
4. Contacts and phone apps show up in 5s or more to load: need to switch to those ugly dialers, no choice at all
5. No widgets menu in app drawer as in nexus ICS
6. Launchers freezing: tried both nova and apex: many a times the screen went blank for a few seconds after hitting home (didn't crash though)
