[Q] Is it laggy? - Acer Iconia A500

Hi to all the Iconia Users,
Guys, I am thinking about buying the A500, but I have been put off a little by comments about the unit being laggy and non-responsive.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 and love it. It does everything I ever ask and does it without a moments hesitation. I also went out and bought a Samsung Tab 7inch, but have found it to be very laggy and Samsung are hopeless at supporting their devices with upgrades. I don't want to make the same mistake again. Do you guys find the A500 slow and unresponsive? Especially with web browsing and emails? I would use the device for mainly browsing, powerpoint, reading pdfs, and maybe remote access to the work computer. Do you think the A500 can cut it?? Thanks for your replys.....

I have a EVO 3d and the a500 and I don't think the tab is laggy when its in portrait with the ffc is on the left side. But any other orientation it can be a little slow to respond. But I only noticed that on the home screen.

I had some lag on the home screen etc.. but that was down to a stupidly hungry live background.. fixed with a static wallpaper..
I have noticed some noticeable lag with the stock browser, my initial switch to MXBrowser seemed to fix it but this is now also giving some lag.. but this is down to the browser not the dev itself

Install only quality apps that do not keep running in background and it will run fine. I would buy this again.

I experienced this same issue and fixed with a static image as well. other than that it performs splendidly.

Even a Core i7 computer lags if you don't maintain it. This thing has the same cpu and ram as 5 other devices in the market with the same spec that cost more.
Use a custom rom that have stock apps remove because those tend to slow things down. Personally I use a background composed of a black image 1x1 pixel. There are people who said you don't need Task Killer but my experience digress.

Thanks guys!
It looks like I might soon be an A500 Acerian.
I am really glad there is a forum like this that is available when embarking out with a new piece of technology. Really glad you are here to assist and share your opinions.

You may want to consider the A501. Has a 3g sim for data when you're not near a Wifi. Same device as the A500, just the 3g (no, it is not the same as GSM)

Is there any problem tethering the A500, as I was thinking I could use the GSII as a hotspot??

No. I actually have a SIM with unlimited data laying around (for which I pay the fee and don't use) but i still choose the wifi version. There is even a kernel which enables USB tethering but wifi tethering works out of the box with my Desire HD (infrastructure mode but I suppose SGS2 uses that too, for ad-hoc you'll have to change some files). I'm on vacation right now and for two weeks I have my phone on the charger next to the window (wifi tethering is really power hungry) and I'm down by the pool with the Acer.

Well the picture is taken from the window I had my DHD near so I'd guess about 30 meters or something like that. Also you should know that the DHD is not known for it's best wifi performance. All alluminum phones suffer from that and it's inevitable. The connection was weak (1 bar) but stable, which is much more impotrant as the 3G network speed is not that great either. All in all I'm pretty pleased with its performance (I honestly did not expect it to work anyway)

Wifi question

Does anyone know if there are limitations to wifi? I just moved into a new apt., and I barely get Edge networks... Cell reception sucks basically.
But I just set up my 15/2 internet and am also using a wireless router which shows maximum connectivity on my phone wherever I am in the apt. I am using the TMO wifi calling app, and have psyched it with the GB patch (since tmobile thinks I have froyo). But I have trouble with random texts sometimes, even more often with MMS. Also calls are droppped rather frequently.
Just curious and hoping there if something I can do.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
It can be picky. If you are using a faux kernel you will have alot of issues with mms. I have used every rom and every kernel combination, if you live in an area with no cell reception as I do... you rely on wifi calling for everything.
It is picky with wifi signal. As soon as I get a room or two from my router it will have issues. It sucks, but T-Mobile makes you have a pretty solid connection for it to work.
I have found fauxs aosp rom and ckisgns kernel to work damn near 100% for mms, txt and calls as long as I have good signal to the router.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Thanks... I might have to switch from CM7 and faux's BFS kernel.
I was 3 feet from my wireless router last night, and on the same 45 minute call, I was dropped FOUR times. I can't have a normal conversation, so I need to do something. I can live with spotty SMS/MMS, but I can't be dropping calls like that. I work from home often, and it would not look too good to talk to clients or whoever and continually be dropping calls every 5 to 15 minutes.
I will have to look into the AOSP ROM. I have only used CM from the beginning. I have a little fear of the unknown though, I have to admit.

But anyway, I moved, and for whatever reason, in my old apartment, I had decent network coverage and full wifi and no problema, then I move, have spotty/sucky network coverage I understand, BUT I broke out an extra wireless router AND a wifi repeater I had laying around, and I can't even check the damn living wallpaper weather screensaver I have because my wifi gets dropped.
Someone above mentioned that faux123's kernels don't help the situation, but if I am going to switch ROMs--and I am not big on change in the first place--I want to know what I an looking for... I mean is this just like flashing a recommended ROM (thank you everyone, BTW) and hoping for the best? Does this have something to do with the NIC radio app? Or do I just have to clean off 200 mgbs or so of Keeley Hartzell pics (cyanogen joke)?
I am not going to drop $300 for a cell repeater, if I can just switch to a different ROM, but I don't want to be spending 12 hours flashing 10 different roms walking around my place going "No TMO, but I got access to Alltel, Cellular South, and the defunct Amp'd Network if anyone needs it."
Sorry, its morning and I guess I am a little cranky. [The new release of the perpetual beta Swype app is annoying me too. But swype is like a drug....you can't go back to hunt and peck after using it for a month.]
Thanks for everyone's input thus far and future suggestions in advance.

virtuous fusion works for me
besides virtuous fusion battery life being real sucky the phone connects to wifi calling with TMO just fine and sms and mms seem so far to be working fine ,granted i don't remember the last time i have had a 45 min conversation. sometimes you do have to turn off the wifi and then turn it back on to keep the wifi signal form cycling off and on.
i think your best bet is stock rom/radio/kernel combination. may be try that...
I don't mind going back to stock... Well isn't there a real live GB sense ROM now? I mean from another sense Leak?

The gb version of wifi calling is from the leaked mysense which was not an official release and hence might have some issues. But I am just guessing here thats why I suggest going back to stock (off course you can remain rooted when you try that).

Ok I have been reading and reading about how to solve this problem...and I have a TMO question... Anyone know anything about t-mobiles microcels that I hear will or are available at ~ $100 or so plus 1.99/month.
Is this just a wifi solution, our will this get me connected to the uma network?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
ok... not getting a lot of responses on the microcel question... And I need to flash something new quick...
I hate to ask these lameass questions... but what would be a good GB closest-to-stock ROM and kernel???? I would go all the way back to stock, but thought I would take baby steps, and try a GB sense ROM instead of CM7 (which is what I have now and had since February). Just chime in with any votes of approval... with network connectivity a rather important working consideration.
I read the virtuous fusion thread, and one of the gb sense thread, but it always hurts my head when I have to read about sense roms.....
Thanks as always in advance.....
If you don't want to try fusion sense, try evils espresso sense. It's gb with close to stock my sense. Used it for a little bit and works pretty well. I pick vf since it's prettier lol

I feel like that actress who plays the loony older sister in "Home For The Holidays" who looks at awe and wonder at how her porch light goes on when triggered by a motion sensor "magic!".
Virtuous Fusion made all my problems vanish like magic! Other than having to start from scratch on personalizing a theme for it, the sense ROM has exceeded all my expectations, and I now get a network signal in every corner of the house. Is this because of the radio app or just sense overall..? It is really dramatic.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
Aosp rom's have lower wifi signal and slower data speeds by nature. Due to not having the full source code and such.
Glad its working for you.

Your feelings of Android 3.2 on your Motorola Xoom

What are your uschescheniya from Motorola Xoom Android 3.2?
Speed and so on?
I have a feeling that runs less smoothly than before the upgrade.
I get the opposite feeling. The keyboard pop and retraction iw super fast and smooth. Everything on the desktop and in app drawer is incredibly smooth now.
When I got 3.1 a lot of people said it improved so much but mine ran worse. I had horrible keyboard lag too, so I did a reset on the device and it worked just fine after. So that is a suggestion you could try.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
after few times of soft resets, it runs much more smoothly than 3.1. even home screen in portrait mode run smoothly now =) although sdcard is just readable, i dont mind it too much as i use the internel storage always.
anyway, i did notice that it eats more ram when i enable the auto screen rotation, and the benchmark decrease too - thats weird, cause the overall performance increase greatly
It seems to run a bit smoother for me, though it may be a placebo effect. Network throughput on wifi also seems to be improved with the same caveat.
Netflix stopped working which only bothers me because this would be the easiest way for me to test the qualitative nature of the wifi performance.
I have not had a chance to mess with the sdcard yet. I am interested in the implementation details.
I also have noticed an improvement in battery performance, and that apps load faster and that graphics across the board are far more improved and impressive. The app drawer is amazingly smooth now along with the desktop.

After all the rants I am still gonna get the wife a xoom. My typing lag is gone and still can access the USB flash cards, so that keeps me happy. I also understand this update has the 4g radio software. All we need now is the radio.

Overall the more I use it, the more I am of the belief that 3.2 is a marked performance improvement. Not huge but things definitely seem to be running smoother.

Yes use that version of wifi tether. I had mine running last night from my EVO 3d. I just chose epic 4g under settings and for the device profile. Seemed to work fine. Opps I replied in the wrong thread lol. Well I am hoping HP has some touchpads soon. Would love to put Android on it but I am sure it will look kind of weird in a 4x3 screen.
I am also one of the lucky ones who scored a 32GB touchpad on the firesale. What I would really like to see is the SMS/call integration with the touchpad. Anyone know what kinds of protocols the pre3 and touchpad use for SMS/call integration? I am guessing that it can all be done through bluetooth? I have done ROM and theming stuff, and have mild experience with C++, but this kind of project is a bit out of my league.
Well, the CM7 team has made a lot of progress getting it onto the TouchPad already. Here's a video from android police showing it booting into CM7. It's super quick too!
Lots of quirks to work through still. The guy said that the touchscreen input isn't working yet.

I preferred having this feature, and I have noticed a difference in the past when I thought I was using WiFi only to learn I wasn't. Maybe you don't think it was useful, but I certainly found it to be very much so. Now I have to drill down into the settings to manually turn off mobile data instead, which is a pain.
Besides, airplane mode usually shuts off Bluetooth, GPS, mobile data, and WiFi, or at least it has on nearly every device I've ever owned. In other words, from a practical standpoint: baby with the bathwater.

I guess you are right. Airplane mode does shut off way too much. How about adding a data toggle from the Play Store?

Shouldn't have to, that button was a perfect solution, I wish I knew why it was removed, there really was no need for it to go.
Oh well.

Works for me but only when I am in bright light and have the tab perpendicular to my face for it to pick up my eyes.

It's been working for me just fine, no matter what angle I have the tablet at, and I wear glasses.

Any chance someone with this Rom and Root could extract and post the AllAccess APK?
Should be in /system/app/
I highly recommend a hard reset after updating to 4.1.
I didn't the first time and it was super laggy and buggy. After formating, it's smooth now.
