Sadly our tattoo can't tether over WiFi in infrastructure mode (the "normal" wireless mode which is used by WiFi routers and access points). I've been told it's because of limitations with tatto's wireless adapter firmware. This means that you can only tether over WiFi in adhoc mode, that is a mode created for wireless networks that don't have a central access point or a router. This kind of network is normally NOT seen from PCs, tablets and most WiFi devices out there. There are some ways to make PCs "see" the adhoc network, but there's no chances with tablets and other "dumber" devices. Instead it's possible to use adhoc networks with most rooted android devices. If you want to use tatto to tether the connection with an unrooted android tablet it's better for you to use the bluetooth option from wireless tether (but I bet that barnacle have it too). It seems to work seamlessly (at least on Motorola Xoom and Asus Transformer).

However, to tether with a PC, the most reliable way is to plug the USB cable both into the phone and into the PC, and finally start USB tether from the "Wireless & Networks" section in the main menu. This way the PC sees the tattoo just like an usb ethernet adapter. It works perfectly on both windows and linux.

you are saying this if te tattoo is not rooted?
because i have tethered my 3G connection wirelessly with my laptop, an iphone and a macbook and all is good - this with the app i shared in my previous post.

I have a rooted tattoo with nFinityGB 1.11. I also use Wireless Tether. I just can't see the network when I do wifi tether on both PC and tablet. Instead it works good with tablet via bluetooth. I've never heard about someone being able to create an infrastructure network for tethering on tattoo. How do you do?

I connect my laptops to the internet through a university LAN, with static IP adress.
When I wanted to connect my HD2 to the internet while on WinMo, it was pretty easy - i just had to do it through activesync, over USB.
However, on Android I am finding it really hard, because I have a few problems:
1. I can't get any wifi router to work over this LAN (and I know others can't too);
2. Ad-hoc isn't working on android, and I also couldn't get the patches here on xda to work;
3. I've tried Connectify (turn ad-hoc into ap/hotspot) but also it didn't work;
So I am running out of ideas. I have mobile carrier internet access, but of course i have limited bandwidth and trafic, and it would be much nicer to use my laptop's internet access.
Do you suggest any workaround for this situation? Is anyone working on some kind of "reverse tethering" usb solution for the Android, a la ActiveSync? Maybe I should keep trying to get ad-hoc to work?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I would like to keep my android build (i feel comfortable with sense) and changing to that build would help me with wifi tethering, but I am looking for something different... unless that build already supports ad-hoc networks. However, ad-hoc is so unpredictable that a different solution altogether would be best.

Try bridging your laptops wireless and wired lan connections under windows. That will make your hd2 as if it is connected directly to LAN. (Select both connections with CTRL and right click bridge)

Unfortunately, as I have stated before, I can't connect the HD2 to my laptop via wi-fi, because I can't get ad-hoc to work properly on the HD2. But thanks for your suggestion.

Did you try connectify in Access Point mode? (Connectify supports ad-hoc mode with every wifi chipset and real ap mode with some wifi chipsets)
Check: http://www.connectify.me/docs/supportedcards.html for AP mode compatible wifi chipsets and drivers.
You may get a cheap wifi card or usb wifi that is compatible with connectify ap mode.
Second solution: (Reverse usb tether method)
Another solution would be finding a Android build that has known working usb tether mode such as shubcraft 1.4c rmnet and connecting it to pc then bridging the usb and ethernet over a Linux computer. That will make the usb tether in reverse direction. You need a linux computer or a virtual machine with linux. Difficult but possible.

Fortunately, I managed to solve my problem with a variation of your first solution
I had tried Connectify before. On my (older) HP laptop, it only provided ad-hoc networking. But on my eee-pc, it was able to work on AP mode. However, I couldn't connect to it from any of my devices, Android, WinMo or even my other laptop (Win 7).
So I did a little more research to check if there were any other apps available that would take advantage of Win7's ability to more or less easily create a hot spot (based on its Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter) and I found this one: Virtual Router.

I absolutely recommend it!
It worked flawlessly on my eee-pc and I manage to connect to it my (other) win 7 laptop, a touch HD on winmo, and my touch hd2 on both android and winmo, without a single glitch. So now I am using my LAN's internet access on my HD2 on Android through wifi, without having to use a wifi router or establishing any ad-hoc networks.
So problem solved (for now)!

Here at work I don't have the best (strongest) 3G signal which tends to kill my battery throughout the day.
A long time ago to help with this, I took a spare laptop and used it to setup an Ad-Hoc wireless network. If you don't follow, what that means is the laptop has a wired ethernet internet connection, and then using the wireless card in the laptop it functions as a wireless router that other devices can connect to via wi-fi for internet access.
Before the Epic I had a Touch Pro running Windows Mobile and it worked great. With the Epic, I haven't been able to get it to work yet.
If I turn on wi-fi, Android's built in menu that shows you the available wireless networks doesn't find the Ad-Hoc network I have setup.
Using an app from the Market called "WifiScanner" I can see the network, but when I click (touch) on it to connect it takes me back to the Android wireless management which for some reason can't connect/see the network.
Any ideas?

After doing some Googling, it seems that Android doesn't natively support Ad-Hoc wireless networks. How stupid. I may explore editing some of the files a few sites list to enable it.

Android O.S does not support connecting to Adhoc wireless networks.
I have an Asus Transformer Android tablet, and expected to be able to use WMWiFiRouter to connect to the Internet until I get an Android phone in the next few months.
Only the Transformer can't see or use ad-hoc connection sharing from a phone or anything else for that matter. Bluetooth is greyed out on WMWiFiRouter and isn't even an option on ICS. Android phones share through infrastructure WiFi, not ad-hoc.
There is no host USB port at this time, so those two methods are my only way of getting Internet to the tablet.
Anyone know of a way to get infrastructure WiFi from an Imagio, or turn on the bluetooth connection sharing? PDANet also doesn't have the bluetooth option on this phone.

I understand that the Wi-Fi Router is only for adhoc connections and that's why my laptop can do it. The TouchPad can only connect to a "regular" wifi. me too, I have HD2 running wmo 6.5, wifi sharing only works with my thinkpad, but not the touchpad. i never got the wifi sharing working when running on android either.
I use the built in WM router program & connect it to other phone devices via bluetooth.
The problème with Touchpad vs Hd2 is that Touchpad can't see Hd2 in bluetooth mode and Touchpad can't see HD2 router cauz in ad hoc mode and not infrastructure
So 2 possibilities
- First Hp open the bluetooth protocol to all bluetooth devices, and let the webos see ad hoc wifi routers
- 2nd maybe an ap will be done in order to let the hd2 creating an infrastucture router link

Oops - sorry, it's early in the morning. The Fire doesn't have 3G. I use my phone as a hot spot, and installed Frostwire on both devices (available from the Amazon App Store).
B63 - can i use FE directly with just 2 android device or i still need to connect the devices in wifi router?
i do it over wifi router - also with other devices (kf,gtab,2x laptop)
don't think a direct connection is possible with fe
but over tethering with the lg it should work - theroratically
i'm only tethering with laptop at work and connect from kf to the laptop - not the other way
for tethering it depends on the mode your lg can do:
hotspot mode - nothing more needed - kf should find it
adhoc mode - use zt180 adhoc switcher from the market at the kf

Tethering with laptop

Connectify is nice but I hate it since they went paid... there's also VirtualWifiRouter for win7.
But I use Maryfi... it works all of the time and seems less intrusive. Plus my wifes name is Mary.

You helped me with flying colors again. Connectify Pro did the job for me effortlessly and I am now able to tether to my laptop if Wi-Fi is not available.
