Sent my S2 in for warranty replacement. - Galaxy S II General

I am thinking of selling it if it comes in a brand new box from Samsung. It was a manufacturer defect so I hope they won't send me a refurb. I just want to confirm if you guys are having the same issues I did as to gouge if I just had a bad sample or if the entire line has these issues.
Keep in mind I have spent tens of hours trying to correct these issues via various ROM's, Modems and Kernels, including KH3 which was the best.
My issues were as follows:
-Wifi can't connect at any McDonalds wifi. Works at starbucks, sometimes.
-4g/3g uploads always dip in the speedtest chart for 2 seconds then bumps right up
-Wifi sometimes says connected but doesn't actually work. Didn't happen too often.
-banding on the screen, blobs on screen in dark room/black image on screen.
-phone was warped, determined I just had a bad one as all the other ones at the store were perfectly flat.
-call volume extremely low even when using the secret code to bump it to 100%. my loaner phone a motorola droid is twice as loud as the s2. I can actually hear my girlfriend talk to me now and not have to say what? pardon? every 2 sentences.
-people can't hear me in calls if i'm talking in a low voice, like anyone would at the end of a long stressful work day. even with noise reduction off.
-stock rom has under 6 hours battery life under medium use, easily fixed with custom rom, but still it shouldn't be a necessity to void your warranty untill official firmware is released for your provider, just so you can use your phone for more than 6 hours.
-phone gets hot, can be solved by undervolting cpu/gpu.
Please confirm if you are also having these issues, to help me make a decision regarding what I should do when the phone comes back.
Cheers, Tony

I am getting none of those issues. Haven't tested McD's wifi, but every other hotspot worked fine for me so far.

Nope fine but would not mind a bit more as standard .

Nope stock about 20 hours on heavy use .
easily fixed with custom rom,
Custom rom makes little difference
but still it shouldn't be a necessity to void your warranty untill official firmware is released for your provider, j
Its your provider thats the slow path .
I would be quite happy to run the phone on stock rom and if i had the problems you posted phone would have been returned .

The truth about the common overheating problem and/or battery drain.

Many people have had this issue and i am going to put down the facts here.
The GMS radio in the x10 is not.. great.
It suffers in low signal area's lets say 1 to 2 bars of signal or lets say about -80 to -108dB and lower.
It requires alot more juice from the battery and that causes overheating then after a time chipset death.
This is all based on tests done at home.. i contacted my provider and had a petition signed, they fixed the tower and the issue's with my phone's heat are gone!
Now that i have full signal strength the device has no heat or battery issue's at home.
The other problem you can face is only if you flash firmware with a baseband or a separate baseband.
Many times the baseband may not settle correctly.. this will lead to severe heat, restarts, laggs or even chipset death.
Sometimes the baseband will not even be compatible.
#edit
the third problem that i am adding here and almost forgot about...
Charging while under any or even both of these conditions... can be catastrophic.
As sometimes the modem uses so much energy while the INTERNET is in usage that it cannot hold the charge.
There by cuasing major heat.. and you can guess where that will end up.
Switching to 2G instead of 3G can help ALOT, but in some cases this will end badly
As you will get very slow speeds and that causes downloads to be pathetic slow
and even more prone to bad downloads due to the bad signal quality.
The other case may be that you have the dreaded chipset of DEATH if you get above 45*C it's a good chance you have this horrid chipset.
Have it replaced by SE.

You may very well be right on the issue of the GSM radio but..... Some earlier X10's were a lot more susceptible to this issue. My first X10 burned out in about 3 months and ran warm all the time, but in standby the replacement rarely gets warm unless I'm in a fringe area that only has edge coverage.
Anyway you don't know what a hot phone is until you've used the HTC Dream. At times you can almost cook eggs on it

So true, but i have been seeing more and more reports of this issue.
And would like to simply give a solid answer to this.
This was not meant as a complaint, but more as a answer so as to end the scourge of that question once and for all.
A overheat that ends in a damaged device = a serious issue.
No worries here
I bought my x10 in march 2010, about a week or 2 after it become available in my country. And I must say that I never had any problems with it, except what all experienced with 1.6 version (slow, laggy, few small bugs).
Overheating was not an issue, even when I upgraded to 2.1 and recently to TripNMiUI (awesome rom btw). Only time I had problems was when I searched for the right rom flashed the wrong file and almost messed up my device.
The battery was above 40°C and went to 10% in like 3 hours Now about that GMS thing... at work I have almost all the time 2 bars of signal (see attachment, was at work from 5am to 2pm) the red bar is 1, orange 2, yellow 3....
and blue lines you see is when its scanning. Sometimes I lose signal for maybe 1 or 2 hours (and that sux) But I cant show you phone temp (dont know how), but it is almost never above 30°C , except when I play games and I do quite a lot
So after more than a year I still have original battery and lasts for 3 days tops, but usually its around day and a half. And I love my X10

It depends.. the heat is mostly created from using the GSM radio in these conditions. such as online usage.
Games are not the problem unless they make constant heavy use of the internet.
Also what was the ambient temperature when you are testing?
Well I do play cestos, and was playing pocket legends, both require constant internet connection. But the temperature still didn't go above 35 (was quite warm). You mean rom testing? I mostly try out the nearly finished roms, so never had any issues with rom functionality or temperature. Except when I tried z's alpha kernel. Then it was around 33-38°C. Now that I think about it when I'm flashing new rom it always goes above 30, but after some time drops down.

Yeah thats the BB settling in nicely.. sometimes a few restarts or even the "white led of WTF crash" seems to sort it out.
averagely my phone will idle at 30 to 35*C but in usage it can climb above 40*c often.
My old motherboard reached a record High of 57*C just playing "robo defence" or even Hawx...
But here's one more test for you.
Once you need to charge plug it in and start using the internet for about 20 mins in a low signal area and watch that battery drain and the heat go thru the roof.
I never had this issue and i only get 1 to 2 bars only and it never went above 34 which is cool. Dunno about u guys but the only way i can overheat the phone is when playing heavy gunner and listening to music at the same time and the battery heat reaches 38 and it still works 100% with no trouble.

These days on WB's rom.. i can play quake 2 death match online "with stencil shadows enabled" while listening to dimmu borgir" with no issue's..
but if i was on stock 2.1 or even the old motherboard.. forget about it.
And trust me many do have this issue.

My phone overheated only once when i baught it and the temp reached 47. But i had to send it to repairs for the broken usb connecter, maybe they fixed that issue.

That's the same conclusion I came to.
When I was using the internet, my battery temp shot up and the phone would restart at 41-42 degrees (stock 1.6)
I got the motherboard replaced under warranty and I've never had a problem with it since

But it still has a effect on the phone.
But how many of us still flash roms or basebands?
Some versions of the board are way more unstable.. to be honest you have the most stable x10 i have seen out of the 13 i have seen here around me.
Also.. did you do the charging stress test?
It's more than just a single simple issue such as heat, it effects the battery life. "when the radio has to boost the signal"
And to be honest out of all of my phone this is the only one that loves to often drop my calls in bad conditions.
noob question coming: how do u do charging stress test? is this something like you test how long the battery lasts?

I posted it earlier.. lol. no problem.
Just go to a area with bad signal "low as in 1 to 2 bars", wait till the battery is getting low.
Start charging it and then use the "market or anything that constantly uses the radio and cpu" constantly for about 20mins while charging.
Watch the heat go up and the battery go down.
Also please note that if the ambient heat is very low then your phone should be reading much lower..
Not all of us get snow on this planet, some of us get heat stroke in the winter.
will try at work tomorrow, since i always get bad signal there.

Differences in Each Vibrant?

I've been seeing a LOT of posts to the effect of "all Vibrants vary", etc... I'm not talking about Vibrant 3G vs 4G or Bell Vibrant, we all know those differences.
What I'm referring to is how phones that are supposed to be identical act and perform vastly different. This leads frequently to claims of "LIAR" and flames, etc. I for one admit I find myself unable to believe for a second anyone that claims to get more than 10 hours of battery life on a GOOD day with a Gingerbread ROM, but people have posted screenshots of 16-25 hours with supposedly stock batteries.
The things I've noticed that are "different" about everyone's phones:
1) Some wipe the SD Card frequently on updating. Others never do.
2) Some came with no hardware access to download mode, some had it.
3) Some have awesome GPS, others have terrible GPS, which leads to #4
4) GPS fixes that improve one phone actually make the next phone WORSE. This is illogical unless there are actual differences in the GPS Radio...
5) Some get decent battery life on Gingerbread, while others are completely unusable, starting to visibly drain the moment you pull them off the charger. And this has no relation to battery life on Froyo, eliminating possible actual battery or user differences.
I did not include overclocking ability, because that's normal with the tight tolerances on CPU production runs. This other stuff, it's just not normal if everything internally is the same.
It just seems too much to be quality tolerances. As I said, people are coming to blows over some of this stuff. When I see someone claim they get good battery life on Gingerbread, and that all it takes is calibrating your battery, I want to bludgeon them over the head with my phone that drains 65% of its battery just sitting there idle for 8 hours, or 40% drain if I'm using my extended battery... when with Froyo, I get 1 or 2% drain in the same time period. But certainly people are getting "decent" battery life.
Even more strangely, it seems like when the phone was manufactured doesn't seem to matter. But the differences, especially in claimed battery life on Gingerbread, and the tendency to have GPS fixes work on one phone and actually 100% fail on the next, makes me wonder if there isn't some issue that hasn't been identified. Are there perhaps 2 different parts suppliers for some component in the phone, that perhaps Samsung is aware of and has written around, or compromised to, which would explain mediocre stock GPS performance, or what is going on?
Are there other differences people have noticed? I'm wondering that if maybe we can somehow identify the actual differences or some pattern, maybe it will clue in the more experienced developers as to what it will take to fix these issues. Currently though, as each developer typically only has 1 or 2 phones, their own, to test on, they can't easily test on both the "good" and the "bad" vibrants.
For example, if you've swapped a Vibrant on warranty, have you gotten one back before that had markedly different characteristics? Notably faster or more laggy than before, drastically different battery life, etc?
What do y'all think?
I have switched out 3 vibrants and this last one is a bit faster but the gps seams more lagging than my last one also I have noticed screen color and brightness differences as well which in part could be responciple for the battery drain. You would think a company such as samsung would have there stuff together.

Well mine is odd i can say that. My stock gps never worked. Once i rooted and started using sgps fix i had no issues. I get great battery life on gingerbread (24hours plus on moderate use) but cannot get a gps lock no matter the fix. I cannot run cm7 either it will drain an entire battery in 3 hours if i do. I can run a stable overclock on gb or froyo at 1.6+all day long with no issues.
My wifes vibrant is about the exact opposite of mine i can run the same roms and kernels but hers will not handle overclock or compare similar in quadrant or running 3d games. So yeah its not just you there is something oddly different in these so called same devices.

I get 22+ hours on every rom I have ever tried and I have tried almost all of them. My gps has also worked well on every rom including gingerbread. I'm using trigger right now and it easily gives me 20 plus hours with screen on over 4 hours...not that battery matters much. Every one should have an extra battery even if it's a cheapy one and there arter ton of those around.
Sent from samsung vibrant
You also have to take into account that the parts of the phone can be slightly or vastly different.
Just from a manufacturing stand point in general I can say with utmost certainty that no matter what steps are taken to ensure identical parts across a line of anything there will always be differences. The time my circuit board went through quality control may have been the end of a shift and the person may have cared about their job a lot. The line stops next shift comes on and a slacker who just got dumped by his girl checks the very next board that may not quite meet spec. This is just one example.
My other example is that of processor chips. As far as computers go, and I'm sure its the same here, the chips are made from a large wafer. Toward the center is higher quality and the edges are lower quality. All these chips meet the minimum requirements but the ones from the center could probably be meet the minimum requirements of the next level chips.
This doesn't even take into account all the outside factors after manufacturing. Yours goes to Tulsa with Mr. UPS and mine comes to Florida with some temp Meth head that managed to fake his way into a job and decides that since its the basketball playoffs he wants to be Lebron with my package.
I hope some of that makes sense. You and I can take the exact same steps to wipe and flash but because of the far too many factors that can make our phones different we may or may not get the same results. All we can do is try to get everything to an optimal place that it works across the majority of phones.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
i think it also depends on when and where u bought your phone from can effect your device, for example on froyo i had good battery life 15 hours with moderate use and great gps, but with gingerbread i get about 18-19 hours on moderate with cm7, my gps barley works and any gps fix has no effect on it, my phone can handle slight UV but anything under -100 it gets unstable but i can clock up to 1.7ghz stable i tried 1.8 but that made it crash, so i guess its also based on luck
I had great results with the s.gps.2.zip file flashed on top of Bionix 1.3.1 on BOTH of my Vibrants (mfg. on 10/10 and 1/11). I've been lucky that they both mirror each other in anything I do to them.
Now you gotta take in consideration that you can't go by what everyone claims here regarding their battery life. I'm not calling everyone liars but there are some that you just gotta throw the bull**** flag on them. I seen post claiming that they got 50 hours of battery life (maybe on standby) but I don't see that happening with "regular" use.
Now wtf would you consider "regular" or "moderate" use? Nobody knows cuz every one's use would be different. That's why I feel you can't go by that claim. I can't tell you how many hours I get on a full charge because I can't clone what I do with my phone everyday to give you a number. There are weekdays I have 70% from 5am-4pm and others I'm changing my battery at 4pm cuz I'm on red. I know for sure though that its a hell lot better that when I was on stock.

If I was able to get 22+ hours on JVP/Q/R GB *or* CM7 I'd be there in a heartbeat. Unfortunately although I can easily get 30 hours on Froyo with my light usage and the STOCK battery (we won't even talk about my Momax), I am lucky to get 10 hours on any GB...
The thing is, these differences are not "minor", they're HUGE differences that people are experiencing. When I say I'm lucky to get 10 hours on GB, I'm saying I can put my phone onto 2G mode only, lay it on the nightstand, and wake up 8 hours later to find 50% of the battery drained - without having done ANYTHING. And then do the same with Froyo and only drain a couple of % - with the same installed apps.
On the CM7 threads and the JVP/Q/R threads it's typically "Well you won't get as good as FROYO but it's acceptable", and that's just not the case with a good portion of users.
I don't blame the developers, of course... what I'm saying is there's SOMETHING, given all these differences, not just battery drain, that is different about these phones that hasn't been discovered. It's enough to make me want to exchange my phone before the warranty is up in September "just to see" if a different phone would be better.
I think mine is the most "common variation" of the Vibrant
- Received the contract through an authorized reseller first week of October
- Not hardware locked
- Never had mysterious sd wipe issues
- GPS worked (locked anywhere from 2 minutes to 5 seconds depending on settings) but will suffer occasionally from horrible, horrible drifting issues (too afraid to perform hardware fix). Interesting to note, s.gps.zip worked wonders but s.gps.2.zip (or whatever it was called) completely broke my gps.
- Never bothered to test if I could overclock or not, but my phone has had the freeze of death when underclocking to 100 or 200 mhz.
- Everything else worked as it should: odin (never had a failed flash), voodoo (never had the not enough space error), etc. etc..
regarding battery life
- pretty standard, custom rom or not, I was able to go through the day with 1 charge (eclair and froyo). Best was Axura 2.x with JK2 modem (around 26 hours I believe).
- GB. It hasnt been as nice as froyo but I believe the devs have done their best without a Vibrant-specific leak. It could last a day, but thats being very generous with screen on time and usage. I believe the GB roms will be on par with froyo if we recieved a leak of our own..

[Q] Vertically jerking screen problem anybody?

Had been very pleased with this device in the the three months that I've had it. Until yesterday that is.
Basically the screen is jerking up and down on its own. When looking at the homescreen, the only way I can think to describe it is it's like 60% of the screen starting from the bottom is moving up and down by about 2mm on its own. I can see it eating pixels as it does so (it eats into home screen shortcuts). It also does this jerking motion when in an application or using a the keyboard.
I haven't dropped the phone, it hasn't got wet. It is completely stock unrooted and was bought SIM free in the UK in December and not tied to any network.
Things I've tried to fix it :
1.Numerous reboots.
2. Uninstalling the couple of apps that I'd installed around the time I noticed the problem.
3. Just done a full battery drain and now giving it a full charge keeping it switched off to see if does anything, (can't say I'm hopeful).
Next step is to back up / get my data off it and do a factory reset. Despite the bloatware, the stock ROM isn't too bad.
I was also thinking of just rooting it and running a cyanogen mod also.
Would be great if anyone has any ideas what I can try or if they've seen this issue before and remedied it. I can't find anything in Google and I wouldn't be surprised if it's just a random bad luck hardware problem -- which is worse than it might be on account of living in Southeast Asia -- but the device was purchased in the UK in December. Anybody know if there is such a thing as international warranty for LG phones ?
Thank you in advance.
I wouldn't root it send it to lg it sound like a serious hardware problem the g2 seems to be plagued with problems

Yeah I won't bother rooting it. A factory reset has made no difference and it's actually worse now and totally unusable, the screen just pogo's / jitters up and down an inch at time constantly.
The phone was bought on 22th of December, I'm pretty annoyed at getting little more than three months out of it. It would be understandable perhaps if I dropped it, or it go wet, none of these happened and the hardware has just failed for no reason.
For sure the LG repair centre where I livein Bangkok won't want to know as it was bought in the UK. And no doubt I'll get slammed for import duty both ways together with eating the postage sending back to the UK. I think I'll feel better taking a lump hammer to it and make a youtube stating what I think of £400 phones that last 2 months and carry no international warranty.
Have you dropped your phone?
Yep it is sad I hope my g2 doesn't go through the same thing i will definitely get a backup device sooner than later but like I said earlier the g2 seems to be plagued with problems which means the nexus 5 prob has the same problems maybe maybe not I'm a little nervous now because in the us most of us buy our phones locked with contract in the UK everybody buys there devices unlocked without contract from what I've heard if your looking for a new device I would wait for the xperia z2 looks very nice

Hello, same problem with me too, mine screen starts to jittering (like there is an earthquake inside my phone) after the latest update for kitkat, the updates says for optimising apps and such.
But recently i realize if i block my mobile data, and only using wifi for the data transfer, my phone stabilize much much better than when i used GSM/3G to do internet activity. When i used 3G my phone jittering like crazy, sometimes bottom half of my screen is gray pixels and bottom up of my screen dancing like crazy almost 70-80 % of the time. But when i block my mobile data and using only wifi, 80-90% of the time is OK, still a bit jitterish, but waaay much better.
There is also member of this forum experienced this and suggest to full cycle charger for couple of times. He say his phone stabilize after do full cycle charger (depleted ur battery until conpletely empty, than charge to 100% while turning off the phone). Im trying it tonight.
I also consult with some cellphone tech support (in shopping mall). They say maybe when i did my update, there are some data corruptions, so my phone did not update properly (corrupted). Because when you factory reset your phone, people said that it retain the latest update of software. So if you already did a corrupted update, it will stay even if you factory wipe the phone.
Seizure ?

It's a hardware issue, it's been discussed on this forum dozens of times. If nothing helps (including updating to the latest available version), send it in for repairs.

Nope, still my screen jittering...
Does anybody know how much LG would charge to fix this.

Im taking it in on LG Service Center this morning, the tech guy said its Hardware problem, about some sockets loose or something like that, He fix it and because im still have the warranty, so its free, no idea how much if the warranty is expired. And i still retain the KitKat OS (4.4.2). but my data is wiped out.
So far no jitters... I let you guys know if the jitters comeback.

Op...sounds like you have a faulty digitizer have you sent it in yet?
After 15 months own this phone, now this problem came to me too so unlucky because this happened after my warranty end...
Such a beautiful monster with so many hardware (screen or lcd) defects
I got same issue recently for many days, typically starts after turning screen on. Finally got it fixed by discharging fully and charging back again. No issue now. And I try not to charge phone too often only when battery is close to zero. Try charge and recharge a few times if it doesn't work. Works for me ?
Passing this on so others can benefit.

Worst Device Ive Ever Owned (Returned)

This is my opinion. I'm a long time Android user.
I purchased this device with the excitement of it being a mixture of my 2 favorite interfaces.
The phone itself is nice looking. The screen is curved leaving it difficult to install a screen protector.
The back is extremely 'grippy' but feels loose towards the middle.
The software is buggy and i think they should have definately spent more time with it. Had a couple of random reboots and freezes within the 1st day.
The phone was randomly getting hot to touch, even after i stopped running background app's, and when it was doing this the battery life would drop quick, very quick.....
The phone does get warm fast, no matter what other people tell you. Simply browsing chrome or facebook i could feel the heat within 3-4 minutes.
The battery life i experienced was abysmal! After 5 charging cycles it didnt get any better, i averaged just on 3.5 hrs screen on time, for a 3400mah battery thats pretty bad. Especially for a so called business device thats even worse.
The sound through the bottom speaker grill was average.
The only thing i thought was realy good was the actual phone calls, sound was loud and clear.
The price of this phone is absolutely ridiculous!!! Its not worth what there asking.
The phone is a big let down for me. I was shocked.
If you want true blackberry, save your money and get a Passport.
My opinions.
I am planning to get the silver passport...

Just about everyone reported good battery life with this thing. Ya sure you weren't running a lot of junk apps in the background?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not buying it. The keyboard is trash. But still.
Did you update anything? For some reason the Blackberry apps don't say they need updates, you have to visit their store page and update there. Also, unlinking and relinking your email account in the hub may help with your heat issues. There's also the chance you just got a lemon.
I updated all my apps i made sure i had nothing running in the background. Im pretty good with Android. No my way round somewhat.
If you get one just make sure you have the ability to return it easily enough.
I returned mine to the store and got a LG G4 instead which is an unbelievably good phone.
You can try out these steps to make sure you have the latest Blackberry apps on your Priv: http://crackberry.com/get-latest-app-updates-your-blackberry-priv-automatically
I have 0 battery issues. yes it gets warm, but that's probably as much as my oneplus 2. I'm easily getting 5 - 6hrs SOT over 18 hrs.
So far i am liking this device. I have an s6 edge, passport original (sold now), passport silver, which is the only device i have ever went back to after getting rid of. Now a Priv. So after getting it all set up with gmail, hub, twitter, facebook, corporate email, and some other random apps and charged up to 100% i went to bed with it unplugged. Woke up 7 hours later battery was at 96. Not bad for overnight. The productivity edge compared to the people edge on the s6 is a grand slam, its almost like having google now launcher after all primed up. Double tap to wake is flawless so far. I must say i am impressed. being able to hotkey all the keyboard keys just like my passport is great. I have not seen a single glitch yet. This device, for launchday software on a new platform for Blackberry is quite polished. I am not a blackberry loyalist by any means, but the subtle customizations and natively being able to set the flashing LED colour to different alerts is all baked in. I think im going to sell my Edge.

The G4 is a great phone. I want to try the Priv but can't justify dropping my G4 for it!
Can someone please tell me if it is possible to remove battery percentage from status bar??? Please.....

Battery is awesome!! No complains!
Totally disagree with OP. My experience is very different. Great business device with good replication of the best of BB10.
Aside from the heating thing, everything else seems to be your device only. You might have gotten a faulty device.
I've been using the Priv for a week now, neither a single random reboot nor a freeze happened. The phone is fluid, and no lags. It does get warm quite quickly, but not to the extent you're describing here ("hot to touch"). It gets as warm as other devices, but quicker.
I wouldn't go as far as returning the device only for these issues, I'd get it replaced instead. But then again, that's just me, and I have been excited about it since its rumours and renders. If you weren't excited about it, or just looking for a "new device" to test, I'd understand why you were eager to return it.
I also wasn't pleased with the battery life. I own a moto x play, has a 3,600 mah battery, I average 6.5- 7 hrs screen on time, the priv have me about 3hrs with a similar size battery??!!
Mine is back in the box ready to be returned also same issue. So hot almost too hot to touch. Constant fc on chrome and hanging battery life absolute ****e and worst of all how the sharp corner sticks into your hand on obe handed use. ..so disappointed as I was waiting since release day..total pants if you ask me
Heat issues may be dependent upon your network as I found in the UK that on EE very little warming but a bit more warming on Vodafone.
Yeah mine was on voda
I'm actually pretty happy with the priv - mine only gets slightly warm under load, doesn't randomly reboot or crash, the screen doesn't click, the front and rear cameras both work flawlessly...
however, I'm on the verge of returning it due to the physical keyboard. People complain that it's cramped and small, but I have no issue with that either. My main issue is that it drops keys randomly and can't keep up with the typing - it happens most frequently when typing double letters ("google" -> "gogle", or "good"->"god"), but it also randomly drops keys elsewhere too. I'm pretty sure it's not me as I intentionally type very deliberately to see, and I hear/feel the key click down - but nothing registers on the screen.
For a company that built its reputation on having the best in class keyboard... this is pretty disappointing.

If this is the case what a major flaw, if your on a certain network you could potentially Cook an egg on the back of your priv with the heat!!
Give it a couple of full drain/charge cycles and you'll be fine. Software is a bit buggy yes. But since this such an important phone for BB, you can be assured constant software updates will make this into a monster.
Give it a real chance before you dismiss it.
Here's my SOT after 1 week of use. Here with 34% left. This will get you up to 6 hours SOT.

Phone is now terrible. Flash Nougat CP/CSC on latest Oreo?

After the Oreo update, my s7 active has really sucked. A lot. It overheats, battery drain is through the roof, it lags constantly, the camera takes a solid 20 seconds to respond at times, and it just generally sucks. The problems sometimes seem to be heat related, as it slows down even more when on charge. I'd seen on another forum that flashing the older CP file would fix the heat issue. Anyone have any luck with this? I haven't done much android modding since the days of ICS/JB/KK, before knox and all of that. Would doing this brick me or trip knox? Any alternate suggestions besides ditching the awful carrier AT&T is in favor of a lesser evil that allows me to use a third party phone with WiFi calling or VoLTE support? That's all that's keeping me with ATT branded phones now, as where I live has little 3g reception for an urban area, so having to drop down on calls without VoLTE is a no-go for me.
Thanks guys!
Have you tried doing a hard reset on the phone first? It sounds like you updated to Oreo with all of your junk on it. No wonder it caused so many problems!
There isn't a way to downgrade from Oreo.
No way to downgrade from nougat but as I understand it, isn't it just the boot loader that can't be rolled back?
I'm not sure if what you're proposing is actually compatible but you could always check.
Best way to keep all your bits and pieces in my opinion is Samsung backup.
Just did it myself and I am getting better battery and cell signal than I ever have! On a two+ year old phone!!
I just got 4 God damn days of light use between charges!

Sorry, been away for a few days. I have done a reset and it works alright for a day or two then back to total suckage. I managed to drop 55% battery in a matter of two hours this afternoon with moderate use. Bright side, it was cold outside, so I got a nice hand warmer. What did you try? Flashing the older CP/CSC?
I was under the impression that the older OS wouldn't work with newer bootloader.

Yeah, I've done two hard resets so far. No luck, but I'm backing it up again for one more shot.

Before doing anything drastic like attempting to flash CSC from a previous version, have you tried clean flashing the following rom in latest modified Odin including all relevant wipes?
G891AUCS4CRJ1_CL13639069_QB20030093_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT_meta
My original comments were more towards the fact that radio behaviour on this rom has been totally different for me than every other version I've had on the device, as a result I seem to be getting much better battery life. I'm not sure what CSC it comes with, but it is certainly acting in a different fashion to all previous versions: Lots more time with 4G icon, less with LTE. Far more readily jumping over to 3G when the signal is stronger etc.
After charging my device is still getting hot, but not during general use. I think my battery is just dying a slow death - it only has 3000mah capacity now. A real shame that it isn't replaceable without defeating the waterproofing.
If the Sonim XP8 were a little bit better specced I would buy one in a heartbeat.
Nice, I'll give that one a shot. I was going to flash a clean install of CRJ1 tomorrow after it downloaded. Don't have very fast internet here. I appreciate the input!!!
If it weren't for AT&T restricting VoLTE to their branded phones, I'd jump ship to oneplus or anything in the pixel lineup. Or the LG g7. Or literally any third party phone that wouldn't force botched updates and bloatware down my throat constantly and re-enable crap I've disabled with every update. But where I work has great LTE signal, very very little 3g/HSPA+, so not having VoLTE isn't an option. Same for wifi calling where my parents live, poor signal so no use having the phone when I visit if I can't use wifi for calls/texts.
Currently using my old g5. Whew. I forgot that this thing would fry eggs with light use. But at least the battery is replaceable. Tried replacing my aging S7 active battery on my first one. Four days later the bottom half of the screen died. Oops.
