Increasing app priority - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hello everyone.
I tried to use search to see if there's already been such a question, but came up empty.
I often use the stopwatch app on my Galaxy S, but the problem is, as soon as I open an app or two, the Android system kills the stopwatch process to free memory for new apps (my guess), eventhough stopwatch is still running. It happens regardless of how I exit the stopwatch, via the home button, back button, hold home and select an other app...
Is there a way to somehow increase the priority of the clock app so that the system doesn't kill it whenever it wants?
I use DarkyROM 10.3 based on JVR, but this is happening on any Gingerbread ROM I use, I tried several different kernels (currently using Semaphore 1.6.0bm BigMem version).

say thanks to all mem scripts that was used in your tkeme/rom/kernel =)

I mean the clock app, as I have stated in the OP.

you cant make it bulletproof just like that you could try making whole group of apps bulletproof but that would make system unstable

I remember seeing an app that could do what I wanted though it couldn't save the settings.
Since I installed Semaphore 1.6.0 bigmem it all looks a bit better, will have to test it more extensively though.

yup think there is some app that can prevent app from killing, cant help tho gl

Go Launcher has the ability to "lock" an app, which prevents it from being killed. Not aware of an app that does the same.

Whatever I set it reverts it back to the default value (7).
Supercharger... thanks, but I think I'll pass and just leave it as is, I guess there is no proper solution.

mate, you will like this app
Hybrid Stopwatch and Timer

Have no need for it, I flashed stratosk's Semaphore kernel with bigmem enabled, seems to work okay for now.
Will report back though.

USE Supercharger and your problem will be solved

+1 for SuperCharger!

I use Advanced Task Killer (free version) and works pretty well on my phone. Some people say not to use one but have yet to see any evidence of why not to other than peoples opinions, so it's up to you whether or not you want to use one.

Mine works much better without task killers. No lags at all... And i tried many of them. It´s just my opinion, dude. You can find many threads about this to get your own: to use or not task killers.

edit: And I use ADW (last update) and 026 firm non rooted. No task killer. No startup manager. And everything is just fine.

I don't feel like writing out the full reason for why not to use a task killer.
Luckily for me, this link explains it nicely.
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
Once you give it a read, you can google around and you will find other sources which give you the same info in a bit more detail.
As for the widget problem? I have yet to experience it unless I am changing a setting on ADW (pretty much any changed setting under ADW settings will result in my widgets reloading). However, I never experience it other than that. I imagine the task killer is your problem.
Good luck!
Again, it is an opinion, but without ATK, I would not be able to fully use ADW. You can explain the logic about why one should or should not use a task killer. My own personal experience shows that my battery and phone performs better with the free version of ATK.
[Note: the link to the geekfor.me as posted by ^^ says that Android automatically kills tasks when more memory is needed. NOT true with the X10. That is why the phone re-starts from time to time. SE's own support site list this as an issue. Once I have started using ATK, my phone does not re-starts by itself anymore].

"Android is hard coded to automatically kill a task when it’s done doing what it needs to do."
So why then does it leave tasks running when you close them, for example, if I use Meridian then close it, the app will still show in the ATK list, and remains there until I shut it down. When you boot the phone, it loads a few apps, that would remain there unless I use ATK. The first reply to the article sums up the experience of a lot of users.

Mine has never re-started itself without task killer.
I use Advanced Task Manager since I started using X10 with ADW Launcher. It was all fine at the begining. Then I reinstalled software and restored aplications (without settings) and started experience the same problem as OP. So I have changed some settings in ADW, especially paying attention to System Preferences and UI settings. I don't know excatly what I have changed but I do NOT experience any problems with ADW "restarting" after that. So in my opinion this problem is down to setting ADW properly, only.
My ADW was experiencing that as well and I enabled ADW Settings > System Preferences > System persistent
This seemed to fix it for me.
ATK and similar apps are a personal choice, I used ATK until late June but since uninstalled the phone had run smoother. But then, it's rooted and overclocked...
ADW is probably the best home, openhome and panda have issues and xxx too crashes too often

System Killing Launcher on every app launch!!

Hi!! I have a problem, I'm currently Running Darky's 10.1 with dark core 2.6... Everything is smooth and snappy, however the system keeps killing my launcher everytime I launch an application whether it be a game, browser, news app... Whenever I exit the app the launcher reloads and it makes the phone really really slow and laggy for 10-15 seconds...
I currently using ZEAM launcher, not sure whats causing this, i've been using this launcher since its launch and only had this problem when i was on stock froyo...
Any ideas what can be done to fix this issue...
Thanks!!
Same problem here.
I am on GigerReal 7.1.3 and the worse thing is when it you try to make a phone call and the bloody thing just restarts the phone every third key pressed.
I can only call using voice calling when this happens...
I am using LauncherPro but it also happens in Ginger Launcher and TW Launcher 4.5
Just out of interest guys, how much free memory is showing for you in Settings > Applications > Running Services ?
I am running stock JVQ and although the phone works fine after initial boot (with around 180mb free) this number seems to drop over time and results in any new application clearing any other app from the memory. This even meant that if I got a text message while using the web browser and replied to it, by the time I went to return to the browser it had to reload where I was from scratch. It was also clear that after playing a game and returning to the home screen, even this was having to reload and "redraw" again.
That in itself is a minor annoyance but eventually it seemed to get so bogged down the whole system froze with the "black screen of death" and I had to do a forced reboot. I'm aware, of course, that JVQ is not an official release so it's not fair to be too harsh on Samsung here...
I seem to have a lot of memory free. It happens after the phone has been up for some time.
I noticed that launcher pro was reloading the widgets every time it starts. Also i seem to notice that it happens when you dial a couple of numbers and it starts giving you suggestions from the contacts. So it could be contact related?

This is the same that happens on my system... The launcher just reloads all the widgets everytime I close an application... the amount of ram is always close to 243/337.. So its close to 90-100 mb free, which is enough i suppose... Still the launcher just reloads everytime an app is closed... Its really getting annoying...
basicly you must set HOME_APP_ADJ to 0 making home app unkillable =)
am not sure but probably do that
/data/local.prop -> add such line ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0
and restart - have not tested just pure theory (the .prop location)

Actually, putting the value as 1 worked better for me. My launcher so far has not been killed even once.
ya 1 should work flawlesly
0 is making it bulletproof/unkillable at any state
but 1 should be safest value
I think Spare Parts allows you to adjust the task killer's sensitivity. Maybe have a play with that and relax the settings.

Attached is an APK which adds that line. Make sure you're rooted first. I wrote it in the past 10 minutes, so it's very simple and might crash, but it did work for me.
Just install it, launch it, confirm root and then watch out for a small message. If successful it will directly ask you to uninstall it. Reboot, and done.
there is also ro.HOME_APP_MEM that can be changed to 4096
to follow other oom_adj=1 settings =)

Thanks a lot dude... The apk installed perfectly... I'm already seeing improved performance from my device... The launcher hasn't been killed once since the install...

Try changing the lowmemoty killer setting to something less aggressive. Your phone is trying to keep too much free memory so has to kill off apps.
Download Galaxy Tuner (using memory manaber option)and set the application cache values to the new samsung default as follows:-
fa=10 MB
va=16 MB
ss=20 MB
ha=24 MB
cp=28 MB
ea=32 MB
Make a note of your current settings in case it doesnt help.
You can also use Galaxy Tuner to set JEWE's file system cache
, settings are:-
SWP: 50
VCP: 10
DEC: 5
DWC: 10
DRA: 90
DBR: 5
These work well for me so give them a whirl, you can always put the values back to where they are now.
mate the problem is solved already - please read dont spam those juwe crappy values ok ?
Ok, cool

WOW!!! Startup Cleaner. Now this is a very handy wee app! Link...

Now this is a handy wee app!
Check this out. Before installing this app get your hands on taskxp from the market (don't set it as your default launcher make your default what is already was). Reboot your device then click taskxp to check what apps have started (a lot!), also see the amount off free ram you have. But the app below actually works
Download the app from the link below. Disable user apps, and whatever system apps are starting (compare/check with taskxp). Reboot then check what apps have started, nice eh?
It took me just a couple of reboots to get it set up nice.
Note, stay away from installed apps all that does is uninstall.
Try it out, post here what you think.

Cache problem, try change the Class2 MicroSD to more higher like Class4 or Class10.
Must be app related. I always check if there's a lag after installing an application. And whenever there is one, I remove it right away, like some timescape additional extension I downloaded, it made my settings menu lagging.
Done that, did a fresh Installation and tried my Samsung class 10 sd nothing changes

Have you tried v6 Supercharger? (See my signature)
Yeah already tested that and it still lags like hell..
Could you post a video of this lag?
Best thing to do if you can't figure out what's causing the lag is to factory data reset.. start from a clean install.
you may use Fast Reboot Pro also.. its a small prog that free's memory everytime you unlock your screen (configurable)
Sometimes it will free more than 100mb of used RAM

I started from a cleaninstall yesterday, but nothing changes.. and my I/O scheduler is just standard(deadline i guess) .. I appreciate your help till now guys !
There are few things you can do. Since you said you have overclocked your bootloader should be unlocked. So flash this package. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249387 and see if that improves it. (OR)
Download Script Manager from Market
Download the "V6_SuperCharger_for_Android-update9_beta_6.sh.txt" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15948434&postcount=1127 and copy it to your SD card
Do NOT run the V6 SuperCharger install script at boot!
2. Load the script (V6_SuperCharger_for_Android-update9_beta_6.sh.txt) into Script Manager and select "Run as Root."
3. Touch the screen for the soft keyboard or slide out the keyboard and get SuperCharged! Select "MegaRAM 2" then choose Nitro Lag Nullifier
4. Then click setting menu, choose config mode, u will see a check box named "browse as root", tick that box
5. Go to data/ and run 99SuperCharger.sh install script at boot and reboot your device
Then download SetXperia (If you have SetCPU uninstall it) then change the I/O schedule to "Noop" and select the CPU Governor SmartAssV2. Min - 122 and Max 1578 Now see if you feel any difference
Tested that now, and it really improved the performance, thanks man ! the lag is gone
thanks to everyone else for helping me !

Comments about RO Acudroid V3 ICS Themed - 21/02/12 on Super Smooth Android 2.3.6 JQ9

Being a noob I am not allowed to post on the development forums...........
last night I upped my Galaxy Tab (Thai ROM) to Gengerbread 2.3.6 and Acudroid V3 ICS Themed.
1st I would like to comment about the instructions and the process:
My Tab is an important work tool for me - and I was a bit worried about bricking it and taking days to recover... BUT - I followed the instructions of Acubens - and where pointed to teamovercome.net kept following their instructions to the letter, and happily after a couple of hours my Tab was running 2.3.3 with teamover's ROM and later 2.3.6 with the Acudroid V3 ROM.
Restoring apps + data was fast and easy using Titanium and very soon I had my phone up and running just like I want it
As far as I can tell so far - seems everything is working fine - phone calls, sms, camera, email, GPS, wifi, GPRS, sounds and notofocations. As I didn't see and speed improvement I downloaded and installed no-frills CPU and overclocked the CPU to 1.2GHz - and now the Tab is FLYING.......
Now that I've done the up and ROM change - I hope to see more new ROMs for the TAB

So far 2 small issues I came accross -
1. Some notification sounds are not right - i had chrome2phone app and instead of just a short bip like it used to be - it was a non stop bipping for about 15 minutes. I removed the app and try to re-install only I can install it now for some reson. I installed for now the "browser 2 droid" instead, but the notification sound is the same 15 minutes non stop bipping...
Don't get sound notifications for "what's up", and on Gtasks. Probably some other apps that I didn't notice so far.
2. On some of the menus the text under the icons is white over white so can't see it before actually pressing it...
as for battery life - seems a shorter than the stock ROM I used before, but that might be becuase I play with the phone a bit more now...

Hi, i will look into the sound problem you have, maybe those apps uses the default sound scheme of gingerbread and i have change that, so can you tell wich sound they use of the system? And can you not change the settings in that app to use other sounds?
Menu is fixed as you noticed already,
If i have an update for your sound issue i will let you know..

can you use it in the next update?
but i think this is a great job you`ve done

I have looked into this and it seems to be made for Froyo and not for gingerbread so it is not supported when you using gingerbread, sorry

Hi Acubens,
I notice that long press power button menu (aka Device Options) doesn't offer reboot options.
can you make that for us?
Thanks for the nice ROM.

Hi,
Sorry but no, i included a app called quickboot, this app shutdown or reboot your tab much faster, and you do not have to use a mechanical button that can be outworn if you use it much.
Cheers
Got it. Thanks anyway!

I looked for a solution and seems there is none... many users complain about the notification sound, some also mention it lasts forever (like mine...), but no 1 mention what version of Android they are using http://code.google.com/p/chrometophone/issues/detail?id=239 . It worked fine on froyo - short sound and thats it. so probably some changes between froyo and GB cuases the problem. Only way to stop the sound is by forceclosing the app

Hi,
Thanks for the feedback on the issue you have, it will probably never work as it is made for froyo and not for gingerbread.

WIFI
It seems I have a problem with the WIFI scanning. It only scans when I reconnect the WIFI. If I go out of the WIFI area the tab goes on EDGE as should be, but when coming into a WIFI area it wont show it nor connect to it unless I stop WIFI service and start again. Didn't have this problem on V3... Anyone else got this problem? any solution?

Hi,
Wifi scanning is set for 180 seconds to save battery, if you like to change that you can install rootexplorer and change settings in build.prop or delete the complete line and save it.
Cheers
Change the build.prop file

Changed it to 45 - hope it fixed the probel (will see next time I leave the office).
For the benefit of other noob's (it took me a while to find out how to do it...) here's how I managed the change step by step:
1. Used Rom Toolbox / scripter / Mount System Read Write / Run
2. Used Root Explorer to go to /system/build.prop << Long press on the file name and change permissions to rwrwrw
3. Used Astro to open the file (long press, select open as / text << select astro's text editor), located the line I wanted to change [wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=180], changed the value, saved
4. Used Root Explorer to go to /system/build.prop << Long press on the file name and change permissions to rwr-r-
5. Used Rom Toolbox / scripter / Mount System Read Only / Run
6. Reboot system
Careful not to change something you are not sure about as you might brick the phone....
use ES File Explorer.
Just make sure you go to its setting, Root Option and enable its Root Explorer and Mount File System.
Then you can browse to "Favourite" and select the "/"
and go to systems and edit the build.prop using its own internal ES Edit note, and it even make a backup of the original file for you.
A lot less step than what you needed to do there.
