The first thing I would do after rooting is back up your efs folder. Search for how to do it as it could save you if yours gets wiped out.

The best advice i can give you is to read and research as much as you can before doing anything else. Don't be in a rush to flash or customize something, get comfortable with the phone and stock firmware first. This way you can decide on what features you want/don't want in a custom Rom.

Best suggestion,
1. go through the all 5 sub forums of galaxy s2 atleast for a week or so.
2. understand how android works by playing with your mobile for a week.
3. understand the difference between kernel/rom, stock/custom rom.
4. after u have some basic knowledge on all the above, u can start flashing things
I know every new user will be excited when getting a gadget like this, but take your own time to settle in.

I would say it depends on how careful you are, you can indeed read and research for a week. But what I did was ordering an usb jig, search for it on here or in ebay, and started flashing as soon as it arrived. So basically the gods tell you how much time you need.
When it arrived I just flashed evey rom around, than iw were like 3 roms, so for I would recommend lite'ning, villain, and miui. Use each one for a day and find out which one you like the best.
From there you can start trying mods, custom kernels and overclocking.

Trying a funky new launcher is a good place to start. Go launcher is free and looks great.
As for flashing a new rom, VillainROM is very much like stock, but you can then add tweaks. The thread on it is friendly and full of information. Great dev.
Also Leomar's revolution rom is amazing, another super dev. Loads of tweaks and themes in the kitchen app. I think both have a efs backup tool. Good luck...

I have tried to search for backing up efs folder but there is no clear instructions how to... Im sorry i dont know much at all about android phones! Such a noob lol

I wouldnt flash any roms for awhile. I recomend just getting use to stock. You should look in the market for apps that require root. I think that the tether app and titanium app are 2 that everyone should own..

Delay on my voicecalls + Rom question

Hello people,
First of all I just purchased my Samsung Galaxy S2 two days ago and Ive noticed a delay when talking to people, the delay is around 1 second I'd say.
Im using same simcard as i used on my INQ 3chat mobile so I dont understand whats causing it?
My second question has to do with ROMS, Ive searched around the forum but cant really find what im looking for.
I would like to find a thread where they compare the different ROMS, and pros and cons with leaving touchwiz (which im not even really sure what it is since i never tested a clean android).
Also I would like to know if i root my phone can i easily restore it if I need to send it in to the manufacturer (warranty ofcourse). So they wont know ive rooted it.
Also last q, which is the best way to root your samsung SII phone, im looking for the easiest and most reliable solution here. Because I thought about installing CM7 on my Galaxy S2 but im still not sure whether to do it or not..
thx in advance

If anyone got any feedback on the different ROMs please feel free to drop comments, as I cant really see much information about any of them inside their threads.

anyone else in a state of mental bootloop

I like many of you enjoy flashing custom roms, kernals themes etc and a big thanks to the devs and individuals for making it possible... Ive noticed lately im not really having any fun with my galaxy s2.
I seem to be in a mental bootloop of flashing apk's, tweaks and other little things to improve my toys userbility. cant seem to explore android market or other app markets for anything other than tweaks for this or add-ons to improve noise reduction blahblahblah its endless.
my phone out of the box stock was just brilliant and fun, now that ive rooted it, themed it and just made it to my everyday liking i cant be bothered to look for games or random apps that put a cheeky grin on my face anymore.
I know theres plenty out there to download i read about them in the forum all the time.
Is anyone else feeling like this not getting the fun out of it?

fair comment on the toy/tool remarks im a grown man my kids can play with the box.
just meant for the thread in a relaxed manner when im not emailing and using it for work related situations. i read so many sarcastic comments on various threads just thought a little humour would lighten up a complex forum such as this. we are here to help each other when it comes down to it.
il flash cm9 for a daily when its a bit more stable to my own satisfaction nice rom bit laggy/buggy for me at the mo
oh yeah as stated with the sarcastic remarks you have only focused on the fact i called it a toy not a tool/phone whatever it didnt really answer the question i was asking, id say a majority of gs2 owners dont use it for its full potential
but my reply isnt to defend what context i have written and what i refer my phone to. the quesion is for people who dont take it too seriously as a smartphone and just want to have a bit of fun with it wether it be for music or games .....

Same feelings here.
So I've just stopped with this whole **** and came back to the stock firmware. Now I'm just waiting for the first official release of ICS.
Regards.
Same for me. But my problem at the moment is that I have hit the perfect setup. It simply works exactly like I want it to, so there's no point in trying to improve it.

Hahaha thats funny....
Part of the appeal of getting a new phone is setting it up and exploring whats new.
I think thats what sucks people into flashing so much.
From what ive seen most changes/roms are bugger all and the hype isn't justified and in the end it's a phone, goes into your pocket and you get on with your life.

Yup, I tend to agree. I just spent most of the day setting up a Motorola Defy for a relative. It took me about 10 minutes to do what would have taken him weeks of reading (and he's a techie guy, just not up to speed with android).
Now running CM7 with root and stuff, it just doesn't need touched. I put on a self-build of it, and that will probably last him 2 years or something! Maybe I'll pop ICS/CM9 on it when the time comes, but it's a set and forget
I see my own phone a bit like that - I tend to build a ROM, test for a few days, perhaps release, then run it for 3 months or more
Ways to solve it
I had bootloops on my phone, a couple of days ago, and have tried several other methods to resolve the problem, but to no avail (for example, taking out the battery and letting it cool for a couple of minutes). If you have made backups using Nandroid backup, you should be able to restore your phone. If not, you will have to flash a stock kernel onto your phone and install a custom ROM after that. That's what I did since i did not have any backups made.
lol did you get the topic of this thread?
I've found that i can't find my "perfect setup" wen i start flashing roms as theirs always another one with something slightly better or more interesting that I need to try out or flash. At this current time the major temptation being ics. Which is what I'm currently running :L
I tried sticking on stock-ish firmware (checkrom) but its just to hard :/

Not really.
Because there will always be the overwhelming majority that will think; "Oh, this CM9/AOKP is really neat, very customisable - but do I want video cam or not!?" - and then back and forth flashing ensues.

Got my galaxy note!

Hey guys.
My galaxy note will be arriving tomorrow. And just been reading the sticky about peoples devices becoming un-usable after flashing certain ICS roms.
Want to know what advice on ROMS people have got to give me as I want to flash a custom rom before I start using it.
Throw anything at me, what to stay away from and what not.
Welcome to the note, I'm sure you'll be overwhelmed as I was for the first 3 or so days, and that doesn't really seem to wear off too much
We've got a great amount of development and support going on for this device. If you're interested in ics straight off, check out the following thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1659768. That shows you the safe builds vs the current affected ICS kernels that could brick you. Personally, CM9 and paranoid Android are the most enticing, although both in early stages.
Also, check out Dr. Ketans guide to ROM installation and rooting, it's a sticky in the ROM development section and has everything you need to get rooted and cwm installation which you will need on your out of the box gingerbread before you can flash custom roms and kernels.
There's loads on here, and everybody has their own preferences, so hunt around. I hope you get as much joy, and fear, as I do

Welcome! Just stay away from anything and everything related to ICS except the official CM9 nightlies. basically its the only safe way to get ICS on the phone (at the cost of S-memo etc. of course).
Thats about it, really. you might feel too big at first but give it 5 days and everything else will just seem too small. dat screen.

Its been a good run.

Well, after some misinformed past rumors, I am finally leaving the Evo. I make this thread not because I feel like I'm 'important' or that anyone will care, but because of the community. Despite the past ICS fallout between users and developers, the Evo community has been one of the best on XDA, and can say that it was nice being apart of it. Made some good friends, and a few enemies, but comes with the territory. I'll still pop in from time to time, but I know I will see some of you in my new home, the Galaxy S III [will be here tomorrow]. Do keep the Evo name standing, as its a great device.

Best investment you can make on a galaxy device man, should be the first apps you purchase once you decide you're keeping the device. Yea Odin is a bit tricky at first, the things you'll probably have more questions with are the dreaded brick bug(idk if the sgs3 is plagued with that nuisance or not, I hope not) and how to avoid it, since its a permabrick if it hits you. The whole method of doing stuff on Samsung is just alien when coming from HTC. Took me a few weeks b4 I was back to flashing like a junkie again with out reading and rereading every step over and over prior to trying something new. I've had a few months with the sgs2 now so if you have questions about samsungs whole crazy zimage/recovery and how recovery is baked into the kernel and changes every time you change kernels I'm more than happy to answer em the best I can or point you in the direction of your answers atleast.

Much appreciated man, and actually been doing some reason: the kernel and boot image on the G S III were separated so its actually a lot safer to root. In addition I've looked up the G S III root [international version] and actually QUITE painless, even using Odin. Since there were minimal hardware specs, aside from processor of course, but I believe the root will be the same or extremely similar. I originally was going to buy the original galaxy S, but I refused to get the epic with a hard keyboard, so I went with the Evo; though not like it was a bad choice.

That's cool they seperated the kernel from the recovery now, on the ET4G there's no normal boot.img its called a zImage and has the kernel and recovery in the same partition so flashing a kernel changes your recovery. It can get quite confusing going from rom to rom and build to build and having to remember which recovery which backup was made with so you can Odin it to restore we still don't have official ICS or kernel source yet so flashing ICS roms requires first flashing a GB kernel with pure CWM to avoid a blue light of death brick. Talk about confusing, it took me a week of reading before I had the balls to try ICS but now I can mOdin el26+cwm kernel and flash ICS in my sleep. I've been running aokp since march never went back to gb except the few times I bootlooped and had to Odin to el29(latest GB ota) and start fresh. Once you get a feel for it and get any questions you have lingering out of the way its painless but the first few times you're sweating missles waiting to it to flash and boot and praying you didn't just brick, LOL. My first venture to ICS I chewed off all my nails while flashing it, I was so nervous I forgot something and was gonna fry my eMMC chip and be bricked.
ETA: what's even worse for me is I have 4 different manufacturers devices all different methods of flashing and its hard keeping it all straight, going from HTC, to Amazon to Motorola to Samsung and trying to remember which one you flash how is an exercise in frustration :banghead:

I've had a few months with the sgs2 now so if you have questions about samsungs whole crazy zimage/recovery and how recovery is baked into the kernel and changes every time you change kernels I'm more than happy to answer em the best I can or point you in the direction of your answers atleast.

Having dev'd on the Moment, I remember the zimage! Actually the best way to work with adding a kernel to a ROM

Its just a pain in the ass for recovery, only because every time you change kernels if the new one has a different recovery your recovery then changes. On the et4g we have cwm, rogue and acs custom recoveries, and not all backups are compatible across all recoveries so you gotta try and keep track of what goes with what since we have to use the el26 kernel with pure cwm recovery to safely flash ICS without bricking I use it for everything recovery, but that requires me to Odin the el26 kernel everytime I need to do something in recovery and since I run ICS I then have to flash an ICS kernel to reboot my phone. Its more of a hassle/annoyance than anything just cuz of all the extra steps required to flash/backup etc

Att S3 - load new rom how/where to start??

So i have the att version of this phone, and I found the Diet ICS rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1732195
and found the Root with no flash counter: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
But don't know wehre to start?? Which roms are the best?? Diet? What other roms are available that are "good"? I've checked the roms that I've found, however I dont really understand the differences between all these roms. Nor do I understnad what steps I need to take and what exactly I need to do? I've read the "everything att s3..." thread, but it doesn't make sense to me on what I need to do to load a new rom.
Do I need to follow the root without flash counter thread?? Do I just follow a new rom thread?
What kernel/rom would be best to load for better battery life?
thanks!
Have you read the step by step guide for rooting? If not then start there.

I did check it...but in the guide I don't see where it says to load your custom rom at. I'm reading the rom guide that doesnt add the flash counter.
Also, which rom/kernel is better for more battery life? Or should I wait for CM9?
you don't need to be doing anything to your phone at this point. READ, READ, READ, before you eff up your phone!

Absolutely true. The place to start is always with reading, not with posting more random clutter to the forums. All of the information is out there, and forums come equipped with a search.
+1 Go slow, read once you have root you can do a lot of things without the need to flash a custom rom right away. You gain ability to block ads with Adfree from the market. Also you can use titanium backup to backup your phone. Remember back Up! back up! back up! IT will save your butt.

All the above is Gospel! You need to read and then read some more. Rooting gives you freedom and the ability to choice a rom if u want. Roms are a choice u make. Everyone has different likes and dislikes so no one can say use this rom over that rom. YOUR choice. As far a things like battery life again each rom can give each person a different experience based on usage apps etc. Everyone above has given u good advice read read read. I have seen to many peeps who rush into things and find they have an expensive paper weight. After u have read more try rooting and then a rom or two.

well, i'm not a complete newb. I had a Note that I completely tore down and reloaded numerous times with different roms, odin, etc etc...
I guess my question shouldve been is there any specific rom or kernel that is battery optimized? And also any idea when CM9 comes out? I could just optimize battery and wait for CM9 if its coming out soon.
I'm not going to just go hurry and load a rom. But once I know WHICH rom/kernel I need to load then I can go from there on how best to do that
Idk, when i read about each individual rom its not clear to me what the differences are between the different roms if that makes sense? Like they all kinda say the same thing "de-bloated, optimized, etc etc". I just want a bug free, clean rom that works well for battery really and i dont see that criteria listed on the rom descriptions
I realize theres an amount I need to learn to to get this thing loaded, my question more is whats a "popular" "less buggy" rom that works well with battery life and is CM9 supposed to be the bees knees or what?? haha
actually looks like not many roms available yet. i may wait until there's more to choose from and for now just battery optimize and remove att crap
There are no good roms for this phone so I would root and wait hopefully they start coming out soon but it maybe a few months or longer or never since the international version is getting all the developer love only. I want MIUI or CM9/10 then we can talk.

but i did find the "cpu sleeper" script to conserve battery, so I may root for that. depending on how much it saves?
