What makes a Future proof Android Device???? - Atrix 4G General

Im thinking to myself I love my Atrix its specs beat or match that of phones that just came out in the past weeks or due out in coming months. Now what specs would you say are future proof for ICS and new Dualcore super apps for android? IMO 1ghz Dualcore any chip or Soc don't matter 1Gig Ram but some might say 512 or 768 if you own a sensation being the way Android uses the Os how much is needed. Now when it comes to screen size well this is user based but screen Res I would say it changes some will say Qhd will be future proof but other devices like the nexus prime show a 720p screen so is that future proof? As far as storage we have 16 gigs built in witch is great beating the sensation and g2x along with others could this make our device or others with the same specs proofed some might say the OEMs play a part in updating but who knows my point is I would like 2 answers from you people the Atrix is it Proofed and what makes a future proof device at this point? I mean if you say that the Atrix is not proofed for what ever reason would mean your saying the photon / Sensation. / G2X / All Verizon dualcore phones/ Evo 3D are not future proofed so where is the line in witch we start to proof phones if there is any proof the way Android hardware moves it could be a game a made up word to keep us back for more when in fact a single core 512 device I.E. nexus S is very much Future proofed. WHAT YOU THINK?

Nexus brand phones are always future proof as devs love working on them due to their stock nature. Other than that, it really just comes down to what phones are popular. I would not say the Atrix is future proof due to the fact that most devs abandoned the platform early in its life due to the locked bootloader. Even now the only roms we have are deoxed based ROMs and an unoffical CM7 port. It basically comes down to what phone is popular during each product cycle. For CDMA, it would be the thunderbolt at the moment. For GSM, it's the SGS2 by a landslide. Pretty much anywhere but this subforum, people are recommending the SGS2 as the android phone of choice if you are on a GSM network. It has a big dev following mostly due in part to how popular it is. People can argue all they want about how the Atrix is a superior phone, but the facts are that the Atrix flopped in sales whereas the SGS2 totally dominated globally.

Devs do have a favor in future proofing a phone. Im sure development has slowed down a lot for nexus one and itll start slowing soon nexus s. But generally the most powerful phone have a chance at being future proof. The sgs2 is fixing to get left behind i think with next generation of phones. I didn't know they were titty babies about their pride and joy. Anyways, the first quad core and nexus are probably going to be where its at.

Devs have everything to do with futureproofing a device. Custom ROMs are the only thing keeping older devices up to speed since manufacturers/networks like to drop support after 12-18 months. Nexus one/S are still going strong despite how old they are due to very good google/dev support.
The SGS2 will get left behind like the Captivate has. And by that I mean by not much at all. Captivate dev is still quite active. SGS2 had huge sales, so devs will stay on board for the forseeable future.
Nexus phones are ALWAYS where it's at when it comes to futureproof phones.

This is almost spot on to what I was gonna exactly say.
SGS still has a HUGE support following. Once something as small as 2.3.5 gets leaked, the SGS section will go crazy wuth updated ROMS just like it has with the previous FWs.
If you are an early adopter, you will are taking a gamble with ANY phone.
But with Android, IMO it is critical in terms of future proofing to find a phone supported by devs.
(For non XDA users I'd recommend Nexus, and nothing else)
Devs decide the lifespan of a device more than the hardware itself. Even the G1 and the OG Droid/Milestone still gets supported.
That's why many companies are changing their policies and leaving BL unlocked, because it's truly in their best interest...

I want the Atrix to live forever!
Maybe we should make it worth it for the devs to get involved. I've seen countless times communities placing a $$bounty for the dev/team that gets X feature working.
XDA forums should implement such a system. That way it would pay-off to dev for the underdog, since everyone else would be fighting for the pop/novelty.

You missed the point of my posts completely. I am saying that the SGS2 will last far longer than the Atrix in terms of lifespan due to the simple fact that the SGS2 has a much bigger fanbase and therefore many more devs working on it.

They said the same thing about the Droid1. I've still got one of those for my work phone. I've completely uninstalled all nonstock apps just so the damn thing will run all day.

I agree with this line of thought as well. "Popular" phones continue to receive support for much longer, whether it be official or through the dev community. "Specs" can only get a phone so far on a technical scale but the incentive lies in where the money is at.

I was thinking this thread looked familiar. I noticed the OP had already started a thread based on almost the same premise here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1241063
The reason I bring this up is this forum has become redundant enough just with noobs but to have the same person basically ask the same question and to do it by starting new threads, well.....

Meh I recently sold my Motorola Milestone (GSM Droid). I had no problems running it on stock Froyo at all with plenty if Apps installed on my SD.
The "only" reason why I sold it was because it still had resale value. I got $200 for it, which wasn't that much less than what I originally paid for it.
Otherwise the OG Droid/Milestone is "still" a solid device...

"Future-proof" to me is:
1. can it run everything? (i.e. processor/graphic intensive apps)
2. will it get stable CM? (this would likely ensure ICS)
The Atrix certainly gets a check for #1 and seems likely to get a check for #2. That's enough for me to keep from chasing after the next big thing. We'll likely get ICS from the CM team and keep chugging well into 2012.

i believe that the Atrix is future proof, but u kno a lot of people are bandwagon users, i've seen so many of them in the Atrix forum. As before the atrix came out, they were claiming it was gonna be the best phone to come out this year(which i think it is OVERALL so far), then some moved to the inspire and tried to call the Atrix crap until they used it the inspire for a while, found out it wasn't better, then came back to the Atrix saying it's the best, now the SGS2 is coming out and now their calling the Atrix crap smh....Now i seen the SGS2, it's a nice phone, but in OVERALL specs, i would have to say that the Atrix is better, but that's my opinion. Yea the SGS2 has a nice screen, but i think the Atrix's Qhd looks better(some may agree some may not), another reason is the Atrix having the largest STOCK battery(yea i know their's extended batteries, but they make your phone look bulky and you'll have to use a different back cover and most likely won't be able to use the case you once had) in a phone to date which helps when i'm goin on trips, having a busy day, etc. without having to carry around a charger or extra battery. There's plenty of other comparisons that i could make, but don't feel like going down that loooong list of stuff. I am nowhere near biased in my opinions, i never said that the SGS2 didn't have any advantages over the Atrix, i went on OVERALL specs, i might end up getting the SGS2 or the new Nexus device when they come out after i see watch multiple reviews to weigh out their pros and cons, but i don't know......maybe

For me the only device capable of being "future proof" is the device you feel more comfortable with, for work, play, lesisure and whatnot whithout sacrifices*.
In my case the Atrix has been a great device (and a keeper) because i can:
1. Mod it
2. Play the latest and greatest THD games.
3. Simplify my work with Logmein and such through the pretty convinient Lapdock accessory.
4. Great battery life
5. Great photo and video camera for those quick shots of the family
6. Use it without ugly, bulky bullet-proof casings because the battery cover is easily replaceable and very cheap to get and it basically protects the corners of the phone, which for some reason are the prime spots that get damage by use on any phone.
7. Great specs (RAM, Storage, qHD LCD Screen, Huge Battery, Expansion< etc)
* And when I mentioned 'without sacrifices' I meant that I can use my device without fear of wearing out the screen like on other devices that make use of such 'wonderful' AMOLED, S-AMOLED and variants that degrades over time.
Cheers!

Although I want devs to continue using and creating new stuff this great device, it really just doesn't matter too much for me down the road. I know I'll still have this phone 3 years from now doing the same thing I use it for today. Games, Netflix, Youtube, and browsing the web.
I don't upgrade my phone much, but I believe this time it was a great choice. When it boils down to it, as long as it plays all the new games a year or 2 from now from the market, it's still a great device for me.
Emulators are already possible for the Atrix, so it's not like I'm going to run out of games to play. Which is why I hated my iPhone 3g so much. That device would have never ran PSX games like my Atrix.

Nothing is future proof. As I type this message it's old news.. We should look at the things we do daily with our devices the common things, can you type a text message faster? Are you gonna post a Twitter response faster? Majority of people aren't past needing a great device like the Atrix. I mean the iPhone 4S isn't killing the Atrix as far as specs go. Camera on the iphone will be nicer not to do the mp but the overall optics. Just my 2 cents...this post is already not future - proof

how come all over the net everyone is bashing nS

I am a current n1 owner rooted and all that good stuff, but usually before i purchase something I look it up online and see what the deal is.
I checked out the specs it looks pretty nice(just as good as evo4g droidx desirehd)
Yeah each phone has its pros and cons, but the nexus s is ****ing SICK I was in both verizon and sprint stores yesterday and checked out the samsung phones, for they all use the same screen and the quality of the devices are amazing. Yeah there lightweight and not made of a metallic material but no1 says the that about exotic cars being light weight either haha idk bad analogy maybe.
Nexus S is really nice tbh coming from a nexus 1 owner who is severely disappointed with the plain display and HORRRRRRRRRRRRRRIBLE touch screen nexus S rocks nexus ones socks off.
Still disappointed about the video recording situation and i understand its a software issue instead of hardware which makes me very happy so no worries on that front.
Also I use my nexus one with the stock SD card which is only 4 gigs and I think that is plenty enough for me and i only fill it up from nandroid backups haha idk this is just my view on things and for those who are uncertain about buying a nexus s. Def going to bestbuy tommorow to buy me one of these then ima buy a oem housing for my n1 and new battery and give it to my brother (his first android phone) he will def love it just as much as i did.
But the matter of the fact is that i dont see why people say its a let down when google obviously knew what the phone would be they said they worked with every department of samsungs engineer team to make the phone so these specs are going to be as up to date as the nexus one was and still is.

Lately, as people settle down and get to know their Nexus S, the issues are starting to revolve around Gingerbread 2.3. It is chalk full of glitches and issues (random ringtone changes, difficulty in moving icons, some screen scrolling issues, and a slew of others...) which seems to be shared by many owners.
Google has their work cut out for them in future updates.

As an admitted Apple fan who's had an iPhone from V1, up to the iPhone 4, and;
As a guy who's tried Android - Droid X, Samsung Fascinate,
The Nexus S is the best Android phone I've ever used. There are things I still love about the iPhone 4: retina display, build quality (use of metal, scratch-resistant front and rear, amazing battery life), fantastic app selection and peripheral choices galore.
That said, I am really enjoying the Nexus S. The design aesthetic is equal to the latest iPhone in my opinion - the all-black face, the lack of logos on the front face, the curved glass (which looks great and feels great). Gingerbread is more aesthetically pleasing than previous Android versions. The customizability inherent in Android is nice. The app store/marketplace is getting better although there are still glaring omissions vs. the iPhone store (CNN news, for example).
Hardware-wise, I greatly prefer the Nexus S to the Droid X or Samsung Fascinate (Verizon). Better aesthetic, better feel when held in hand or by the face. I wish Samsung had made the back cover out of higher-quality, less scratch-prone materials. Software-wise, it's totally worth it to get faster major updates from Google than to wait for the carrier and device OEM to get their build out. Also, the lack of carrier crapware is much, much better for the consumer.
I'd like Android to combine its great notification system with on-screen notifications when the device is locked a la iPhone (e.g. push news alerts). I'd like a more elegant folder design a la iOS. The new cut & paste and text selection is nice, but I'd like consistency across ALL apps in this regard a la iOS. I'd like a unified inbox for communications from various sources. I'd like them to fix the annoying field bug when adding contacts from Map listings. Android still lags iOS in the clever use of multi-touch gestures across the OS, and it needs to address this. I should be able to swipe and delete like iPhone, vs. long press and menu select, etc. Android also needs its own form of eye candy sprinkled more liberally throughout the OS. Gingerbread's "display off" emulation of a cathode ray tube is a small step in the right direction. The OS should have a lot more of this compelling eye candy to meet or exceed the fit and finish of iOS, but it has to be "uniquely Android" or it will seem like a poor facsimile.
Hardware: I'd like Samsung to keep what they're doing, but up the quality of build materials, particularly on the back of the device. The Nexus S is a big step beyond the Galaxy S design, in my opinion, and better materials like the Nexus One had would go a long way.
In a nutshell, this is the first Android phone that I prefer at times over my iPhone 4. But not always. iPhone still has the advantage over "Pure Google" in Hardware build (some), software elegance (more), and ecosystem app and peripheral choices (most). Vs. the "non-pure Google" phones, it's not even close. People may complain that Apple is "closed" but at least they focus on what's good for the end user. The choices that are made by OEMs and carriers in the Android universe are rarely good for end users, and this is on display with the superior Nexus line of products.

I believe its hardware, not software. But some day can be hacked with reduced FPS, just like Nexus One
All Google and Samsung knew is that they dont need to spend money on building the phone because it already existed for 6 month. They had lots of time to test Gingerbread on this hardware, and things like lack of Gorilla, LED, Bluetooth 3.0, SD-card, make me think they ran out of parts and used whatever was available at the time.....and in the end the phone is close to $600 bucks with tax in USA and even more in EU.
for me it's hardware deficiency lack of microSD support, no Bluetooth 3.0, the software is clean which is perfect IMO
I think people that are coming from other phones and maybe some Nexus One owners are happy with NS (I would be), But people with Galaxy S line phones (as myself) look at Nexus S as a downgrade. If NS was FREE or maybe $50 bucks, then I would give it some thought, but for $600 there is nothing to think about. Ps. I dont use FFC, flash/flashlight is pretty much the only positive hardware I see in NS.

It isn't a downgrade at all if you're sick of waiting for Samsung and/or T-Mobile to deliver the newest and latest Android. Not only that but open-sourced kernels, Samsung Vibrant (and other Galaxy S phones) relies on leaks and the final version has not been released. Who knows when they will become available.

I was sick of waiting......not anymore. I really dont care about official 2.2 because leaked Froyo for Vibrant is 100% fast and stable (with Nero and Voodoo). As far as 2.3 vs 2.2, for me they are the same...2.3 featuring looks and animations outside and game optimization under the hood. I already have all Ginger looks and animations, and i dont play games. I would put it this way, Touchwiz 2.2 has MUCH more useful features then 2.3
PS. It looks like Vibrants in USA officially get shipped with Froyo already. EDIT: ****ing Samsung switched the dates again
yes, waiting for 2.2 was an agony for SGS owners, now that most devices are on 2.2 it'll be another big challenge to get 2.3 for the rest of the SGS line up.
and it's true SGS takes to long to receive any Official release of 2.2/2.3 all 2.2 and now 2.3 that people got their hands on, was all leaked out or ported from other phones.
that's the only positive thing i like about the NS
People are complaining for two main reasons.
1. The hardware is nothing groundbreaking, the Nexus One was far better than anything else available when it launched. The Nexus S hardware is not bad but it is not any better than what is already on the market. I think people expected the Nexus line of phones to move Android forward, the way the Nexus One did and the Nexus S did not do that. The hardware just did not move the bar like the Nexus One did.
The only advantage to the Nexus S is the software (getting updates first and pure Android). This is enough for me to consider getting one in addition to my G2, but many people won't think this is a big enough difference to justify the purchase.
2. People always expect more when they pay more, I would bet more people paid full price for their Nexus S than other phones. Higher expectations = more complaints.

Would you buy a NEW Nexus S for $395.10?

I'm a proud Vibrant owner, rooted with Nero 4.1 & Voodo. I have a 16gb external SD card filled with personal files, music, and movies. I purchased my Vibrant for a little over $450 at T-Mobile and spent exrta money on a 16gb SD card, and a protective cover.
Today (01/14/2010), I can go to Best Buy and use a special 'Buy Back' program and they will give me $165 for my Vibrant on a in-store gift card. I can then turn around and purchase a Nexus S with it.
Nexus S is $529.99 - $165.00 = $364.99 + %8.29 (Sales Tax) = $395.10
Knowing how close the Nexus S is to the Vibrant, would you shell out 400 clams for the 'Pure Google Experience'? Whats your take? I have an idea, but why should I buy something that my rooted Vibrant can do except a FFC?? Opinions?
The Nexus S doesn't even have an external SD slot.
Yes you getting google updates but you are missing the sd slot. Thats a total buzzkill for me.
Im just going to continue supporting the dev's here at xda and maybe be brave and install the ffc.
not unless the money was burning a hole in my pocket
they're practically the same phone. not worth it imo
At the time I bought the Vibrant the only real difference between it and others in its class was the up to 48 gigs of storage (16 internal, up to 32 external). Save your money you have a great phone, thanks in large part to the devs here. We'll have Gingerbread soon.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Absolutely not.
You're basically getting 30% of the total value of the phone. The vibrant, even without the updates, is still worth more then $165.
The nexus S is definitely worth $400, but if your giving up a device thats worth more then $165 to get the $400 price tag, nuh uh. Don't do it. Not worth it at all.
you could get more $$ in here in the marketplace....a then use that money to buy any other phone you want...
Not at all. It just doesn't feel like the additions to the S make it any better than a rooted Vibrant especially with the loss of the SD slot.
Never, don't ever purchase anything made by samsung, even if the software is controlled by google, the answer is no no no no no!
Let google learn a lesson too, maybe in the future they will choose another hardware manufacturor.

I agree with everyone about the bad marketing decisions Samsung is taking. Which explains how every Galaxy S series phones throughout the world received Froyo except for the 4 sim-lock carriers in the US.
-but-
Respectfully, I disagree with you about the Nexus S. Even though the hardware is from Samsung (which NO other phone out there can beat the Super AMOLED screen). Google has already sent an update to the Nexus S to 2.3.1. Owning a Google phone like the Nexus S is guaranteeing Android updates.

DITTO on that! Except I heard that dual core is a drain on the battery. We don't have battery technology as of yet to give a substantial user experience to last as long as what superphones do now.
Stick with your Vibrant or sell it on Craigslist or Ebay or something, but getting $165 for it is a complete rip-off.

have fun with manufacturer based skin and late OTAs (or OTAs not even happening)

it doesnt matter if rooted ROMs are available, what matters is that Samsung isn't open sourcing the kernel for 2.2.
Open sourced kernels allows development to move even further. OC'd kernels for the Vibrant are based off the I9000 kernel, which results into poor battery life.
Also, all ROMs built for the Vibrant are pretty much using the base of TouchWiz. Now im not complaining about TouchWiz, I do like a lot of the aspects from it. The Power Widget on the notification bar was a great start; but the fact is that Samsung is not reliable when it comes to software updates. The one plus with TouchWiz is the video codecs.
The Nexus S is a unlocked bootloader from the very beginning with easy commands to unlock and lock it. It is made in mind that its a device primarily made to be hacked with. It is backed by Google.
Not to mention.. the Nexus S at this point has more love from CyanogenMod than the Vibrant. The Vibrant and Galaxy S series dev community is too split between each other. The Nexus S is the same in the UK and USA, therefore.. it allows further collaboration with each other.
In the end, it really depends what you want. What can you fight against? hardware or software? Since most of us are tight on cash, im sure a lot of us would lean towards software. In this case, the Nexus series would be the winner since it is backed by Google (or any device that is supported by CyanogenMod).
And dont even start with HD recording.. OH MY! we all have to realize that a phone has its limitations. If you're looking to take pictures or do a lot of video recording, just do yourself a favor and get a dedicated camera.... not to mention with TouchWiz, have fun taking HD recording for a long period of time... when it hits the 15% mark, have fun recording or taking pictures buddy

Oh really....? Tell that to the people who are filing lawsuits and enraging because Samsung isnt releasing a 2.2 OTA.... OH WAIT?! we have rooted ROMs with 2.2... does that justify the idea that they aren't doing OTAs to maintain their products? But instead to just release new ones without committing to their current products?
Go tell that to people who stuck a two-year contract with a MOTOROLA CLIQ, Droid Eris, and all those phones that the manufacturer didnt commit to upgrading their existing phones. The reason why there aren't more people who are furious about this is because they aren't tech savvy and just care about the phone working.

i understand the anger towards samsung, and it's completely valid. however, if you want it done right you have to do it yourself. xda has allowed that for many many people. lawsuits and complaints about manufacturers might as well fall on deaf ears, because nothing will happen around here because of that

i would tell those people to do their research before making such a large purchase. i knew full well samsung's history when i bought my vibrant. i knew there might be a good chance they'd jerk consumers around and delay updates. if i was running stock, i would be furious... but i bought an android phone full well knowing that i would be modding it... a lot.
lastly, team whiskey > cyanogenmod
Nope..
I will not buy anything else made by Samsung. Back in the 80's / 90's they built the absolute best quality products with great support. I've been fighting with my GPS for too long and they didn't make it right. There was going to be a 2.2 update in August and it still hasn't happend (except for the great XDA devs). My first Android device was a HTC (g1) and my next one will be as well.

It's not all about you. People have their different reasons for having phones:
1) Flash Addict: Always wanting something to flash. With a developer phone like Nexus S (or any other phone that is popular in the modding community)
2) Normal user
.. and so forth. All ROMs in general has one thing in mind: increasing its speed.

Again.. this is not all about you at all. Some people are more heavy users when it comes to battery than others. Nevertheless, the 15% mark is annoying and should be removed. Hacked camera.apk does this but not incorporated in all Vibrant ROMs.

What you said makes absolutely no sense. Grammar check. I personally don't care about Samsung not updating to 2.2 because I don't use a Vibrant anymore, but I still have the phone.
All your points aren't even valid. You're just trying to start a war without pointing out what I said but going AROUND them because you can't defeat my points.
My point is that it just depends on what kind of person you are. And you can say whatever your opinion is about CyanogenMod and Team Whiskey, you just seem like a ignorant individual who is difficult to argue with because they are so close minded. They're both composed of great developers but the additions that CyanogenMod includes is just too significant to add. Am I saying that you're wrong for believing what you do? No.. you have a opinion, I'm not going to try and beg you to change your mind.
CyanogenMod actually complies from AOSP source whereas Team Whiskey base their ROMs from the OTA. You wouldn't understand this since you don't use a phone that is CyanogenMod supported (don't even start with G1.. that phone is so outdated that it isn't even capable of taking full advantage of CM7).
I'm sure when CM7 stable is released, TW will start basing their releases off CM7. And you know what? It is built on top of CM7... so whos the better team then? I'm not going to go for one particular side because a developer is a developer. They aren't in this to get any accreditation from the community. They just do it as a hobby. Quit thinking that CyanogenMod & TW are like the rivalry between NVIDIA & AMD/ATI.
Thanks.

Nexus S Win, Moto Atrix Fail;)

I would say about 80 percent of Atrix users I have spoke to are unhappy with there purchase. With mumblings of shoddy software and no real time speed increases, its fair to assume this device is a bit of a fail. Just go over to the marketplace and see the large second hand market for Atrix's, after just one month on sale.
So glad I have my Nexus S

lol.. any chance you read the benchmark comparisons between LG Optimus 2X vs. Atrix? not that benchmarks mean anything but it was interesting to see the difference between those two phones.
Next up versus the Nexus S. T-Mobile G2x, it actually seems like a good competitor on paper. Since its reportedly supposed to be running on stock Android. But I'll most likely wait until a quad-core Nexus phone comes out since Quad cores are rumored to be done by later this year.
These devices I feel are making a bad name for android. People who got the atrix as their first android phone, would probably think that android is laggy even with dual core processor. I wish Google would have went the 'apple route' and control both hardware and software instead of letting these manufacturers put crap on android.

Agree with Mokurex anyone use this device will hate Android
I think Google should force phones manufactures to install a stock
Android over there phones (controlled by Google).
Then they could put there software in the market
and make it connected with the phone serial number.
That will make all phones up to date also will give the consumer
the right to chose wither to install these apps or not
I tried many Android phones from HTC, MOTO and SAMSUNG
I found Nexus S the fastest, cleanest and most beautiful phone

Android is Open Source, they couldn't reinforce those ideas if they wanted to because Android from the very beginning was established to be opened to any company.
And honestly, too many of you are thinking as a enthusiastic user. Why exactly do you think these manufacturers don't care so much about upgrading their phones to the latest Android version? The average user is the large % of their sales. The average user doesn't look at Android the way we do. They don't even know about Froyo or Gingerbread. They just use a phone as a phone.
Nexus S is definitely a great device. And I'm not looking back. From this point onward (since Nexus S), I decided that I'm only getting Nexus based devices. Anything other than that, I'm not interested.
I happen to have an Atrix and Nexus S in front of me right now... been testing them together for a few days. The Nexus S has been my main daily driver and the Atrix just accompanies to see how well it stacks up. Bottom line... the Atrix is going back, nexus S staying for a while longer for now.
It's just another classical case of good hardware, horrible software implementation, similar to how Nokia was going with S60. Nothing is optimized for the dual core, the Nexus S is faster at almost every task, even flash playback in the browser which is surprising, because the hummingbird chipsets are known to suck at browsing compared to snapdragons. Also, the Atrix has a terrible case of color banding... if you thought the SAMOLEDs were bad, the Atrix just doesn't use its 24bit panel at all. Again, poor software. The camera is much better, and the battery is significantly better, but all the software and bloatware just takes away from the experience so much.
If you have anything you guys want me to compare between the two let me know before I return it =)

correction: Super AMOLED i wonder what Super AMOLED Plus looks like, but yeah i totally agree about Samsung. I don't get whats the hatred towards Samsung, they have no control over the Nexus S.
Sure, people criticize about the plastic back. I wish it was aluminium myself, but believe me. This phone is not CHEAPLY made at all, it's solidly constructed.
There's no such thing as a perfect phone. But the Nexus S is pretty damn close to perfect. If it had 720p and SD card, it'd be perfect without question. 4G on top of that, it's a dream phone. But I don't really care about 4G

No its a hardware limitation. It could get hacked by CyanogenMod team and 720p could be added but it wouldn't be "true" 720p if you know what I mean.

Torn between these two phones, was going to pick up an Atrix the other day but then found out Nexus S is coming to all Canadian carriers according to Samsung.
Love the Nexus but really hate the fact it's only 16GB with no SD card. If it was 32GB I could handle it. Missing 720p sucks too.
How likely is it that Motorola would either fix Motoblur or ditch it when they release the Atrix Gingerbread update this year? or at least unlock the bootloader so you can run a stock version of Gingerbread if you choose?
If I was confident that I could run stock versions of Android on the Atrix, my decision would be easy.

Well that's pretty easy to answer. The probability of that happening is zero. Motorola locks the bootloader on all their phones and it's up to people here to hack it. It only really slows them down, but still it's annoying. Also, gingerbread will be a while away I'm guessing, let alone Ice Cream.
Just look at the entire history of Motorola android phones and see which ones actually have an AOSP ROM out (cyanogen)... the answer is only one, the original Droid/Milestone from 2009. If you want customization, HTC and Samsung phones seem to get more ROMs. You may think that Motorola doesn't want custom ROMs because they polish their blur UI but it's quite the opposite with my Atrix experience. Everything, I mean virtually EVERYTHING is half-assed on the phone. Terrible color banding, random reboots, tons and tons of bloatware that conflict with each other and drain the battery (which is why you see battery complaints despite having a 1930mah battery).
thanks, making my decision easier. I'm a noob to android, switching over from my piece of crap iphone (jailbroken, themed, etc) so I'm hoping to learn from anybody's experience with these phones.
The nexus will probably make me happier, but I love the hardware profile of the Atrix. Damn I just want an Atrix running a clean version of Gingerbread.
Don't get me wrong, the Atrix is still a great phone. If you're stuck between an iPhone, Atrix, or Nexus S, no matter what you'll end up with a powerful phone. I have no doubt the Atrix will be a smooth machine in the hands of an experienced Android user who knows what apps to freeze, etc., but there are some things that just can't be fixed until Motorola decides to fix them for us such as the color banding, capped upload speeds, multitouch bugs, etc. Yea it has a Tegra 2, but the GPU is actually not even better than the Nexus S/Galaxy S GPU. I've played a bunch of Tegra games and they don't look any better than games that are on the iPhone (which has a slower GPU than the Nexus S). Sure, Tegra zone will help the gaming market pick up for android by enforcing a standard, but it's still a crappy standard for coming out a year later.

over all. the new problems with atrix makes it abit of fail device now in my eyes
- Locked bootloader. and it doesnt seem its going to be unlocked anytime soon. even the new HTC is locked. i believe from now on all the phones will be locked. which makes the Nexus Line is the only available option for the people like us who like to tweak his phone. whatever optimus 2x or galaxy S2 or Evo 3d will be unlocked is different story. but for now. the best safe bet go with Nexus line.
- only 2 fingers for multi touch + it stops working after you holding it for 12 seconds. like say you are playing racing games, and you are pressing the screen to throttle, while the other finger to move your car, after 12 seconds both touches will stop responding and the screen will act fuzzy for like 4 to 5 seconds before it gets its act together. whatever that is hardware problem or software problem. its a total fail for gaming on that device no matter how powerful its.
and even if its a software issue, knowing motorolla. atrix owners will be glad if they get it fixed by the end of the year. + locked bootloader so devs to try and fix it them selves is out of the window. makes the atrix a complete fail in my eyes.
- the screen is ****. i am sorry but if i can see pixels on both screens. why would i go with less colors ? sure the pixels density are more in atrix. but i still see the pixels. and the colors are not nice as SA. why would i go back step ?
honestly. between atrix and Nexus S. the Nexus S wins hands down. and this coming from an iphone owner who used atrix for couple of days and use the nexus S almost every day since its with my young brother

I fear these locked bootloaders have been brought in after what happened with the g2 and HD line. So many people bricked their phones using the early complicated method to root and get Eng S-off. I know for a fact T-Mobile USA replaced every handset without questioning or checking for the actual cause. I think when these phones eventually got back to HTC they saw there was only one future option, leave all phones unlocked, or lock down the phones completely. They seem to have chosen the second route. I personally would not buy a phone I could not root as this was the main reason for me to ditch the iphone. I'm a firm believer that if you purchase a phone you should be able to do what the hell you like with it. I would pefer that all phones come with an oem bootloader unlock but If activated generates a limited warranty to just hardware faults. I think OEM's just need to use some common sense when replacing handsets, people that brick their phones through lack of knowledge or stupidity should face the consequences.

actually, there is a more " easy " reason why they decided to lock it down.
they really dont want people to keep their phone. they want people to change at least once a year. which is why they are offering more than 1 device per year.
if you have unlocked bootloader. then you will update your software without needing HTC or Samsung or any other company for that matters. and it will prevent a possible future sale of their new offering. its a business move.
which is why i like apple in this regard. 1 phone per year. smart move. keep the customers loyal to you. dont screw them up by releasing a newer better device than yours every 3 months or 4.
there is a reason why apple is leading. too bad all other companies are that stupid :/
as for the andriod, i think from now on all companies will use a locked bootloader. locked karnel. the only way to go is the nexus line i assume if you are looking for open Dev mobile. and i highly doubt Samsung or LG will let their new high end phones like optimus 2x, optimus 3G or galaxy S2 to be without a signed bootloader.

I picked up an unlocked Atrix from Bell Canada (while I was there skiing) last week and put a long side my Nexus S, I actually prefer the Atrix - and I'll explain why.
I'm not one who cares about unlocking bootloaders. Not everyone wants to mod their phones. My Nexus S is still locked. BTW, the Atrix bootloader has been cracked (http://www.androidcentral.com/has-motorolas-bootloader-encryption-been-cracked) but you already knew that didnt you??
The Atrix is running Android 2.2 which accounts for a little lag and reduced dual core speed. Once it gets the latest version of Gingerbread - which has full multi CPU support, the phone will be a whole lot different. Having dual cores in the long run will at least keep the Atrix up there with the best for at least 6-7 months, as opposed to the Nexus S which is technically already outdated and old tech (actually it was already old tech 1-2 months prior to its release lol).
I actually like the screen on the Atrix and I rate it better than the Nexus S SAMOLED - especially outside. Sure the SAMOLED has deep blacks and rich colours, but I still cant see the ****er in direct sunlight. For me, this is a complete fail.
The finger print scanner is unique and reliable. Its good to know that my phone is locked down, especially if it is stolen or I loose it.
The build quality on mine is superb. I can't fault it to be honest.
The Atrix has gorilla glass (thank God), as opposed to a rubbish glass screen with a pathetic oleophobic coating that rubs off after 2 weeks of use (I'm on my 3rd Nexus S because of this **** BTW - and the screen scratches so easily even when its in my empty jeans pocket..... )
****
The only advantages of having the Nexus S is that it will get the latest Android updates and you unlock the bootloader to flash what ever rom/kernel (whatever) you want...
****
I'm not here to bash the Nexus S, just sharing my opinions. I just wish Google stuck with HTC for the Nexus S, rather than going cheap with Samsung. HTC make a far better quality handset for sure. The plasticky build of the Nexus S is a real let down.
I also think Motorola has turned over a new leaf with the Atrix. They've gone in all guns blazing with a laptop dock and loads of accessories like HDMI desktop docks, etc as well. I do not think they intend to let this handset die off into the sunset without software updates. If they did this with the Atrix, they will kill themselves just like Sony Ericsson did with the X10 line. I will never ever ever ever never ever touch another Sony Ericsson handset for the rest of my life.

[Q] Which new phone are you getting this year?

I think if the Samsung Galaxy S 2 comes out for Verizon, I'll get that one. But if not, I think I'm getting the Samsung Charge, or Iphone 5. What phone are you most excited about?
iPhone

sgs2, I hate apple so undecided on iphone 5
SC2.8 WP7 Revolution
None. I'm stuck on the two year contract. I don't know how you are not?
SGSII definitely. I'm avaliable for an upgrade anytime til my contract ends November.

Nothing from Samsung, that's for sure.
I actually really like this phone once its de-bloated and de-crapified. Actually its probably my favorite phone I've ever had. (that includes numerous smart phones and platforms going back to the nokia 3650 on symbian os). Im going to stick around with it until there's something amazing released.

do you know if its coming to verizon?
I'll get the SGSII, IF and only if it doesn't have anything locking it down and preventing custom ROMs/Kernels. Otherwise, I'll find something else.

Yeah, didn't see those when I posted that. Just need to make sure that VZW doesn't request that the bootloader be locked and Samsung follow through with it.

So will unlocked bootloaders win out over slower software updates? For me personally I say yes.

I'm probably going to do the same, I'm hoping that it can get me til sometime in december of 2012 so i can leave verizon...though my contract is "up" in march of 2012 my girlfriend's line doesn't end until 12/23/2012
I just jumped ship from the Fascinate to the Thunderbolt a few days ago. Rooted and have been experimenting.
After getting a sense of the Thunderbolt and putting it side by side with the Fascinate, its not as dominant as I would have expected. The Fascinate's SAMOLED screen is just substantially better than the Thunderbolt's S-LCD. Its not even close really. Also, the latest gen Snapdragon + Adreno 205....doesn't seem as snappy as the Fascinate SoC. Fascinate definitely has better graphics. Very subtle stutters on the Thunderbolt after testing a few ROMs and Kernels. Also, its certainly a matter of opinion, but the Thunderbolt is just a tad too big compared with the Fascinate. They have the power button on top like an iPhone, and the way I would naturally grip the phone puts the power button barely out of reach of my index finger. I have to do a very small phone adjust in my hand to allow my index finger to get on top of the power button, but the Fascinate's 4 inch screen is about as large as I would imagine it could get for it to require no movement of the phone in the palm while operating it, which is preferable I think.
On the other hand - Verizon's LTE network is stupid fast. NYC with its saturated 3G networks -- the LTE network is like coming up for air after nearly drowning. Its rock solid everywhere I've been, almost like ubiquitous WiFi. When you really think about it, even the best Dual-Core Cortex A9 phones on ATT can't really touch a Cortex A8 experience on WiFi. The network makes an enormous difference and that can't be stressed enough.
The Thunderbolt is sexier than the Fascinate with its screen off. I don't really care about the kickstand, but the feel and heft is a welcome change from the Fascinate. Although not a graphics beast, it is by no means a slouch. The UI is very snappy, and I'll be very curious once CM7/AOSP gets released.
Thats the final thing about the Thunderbolt that I think is worth mentioning. The Thunderbolt forum is buzzing. Lots of devs, people are gearing up for CM7 nightlies/crackflashing. Not to say this forum wasn't Fantastic, but the Thunderbolt, and HTC in general, seem to have a slightly more robust community. I'm not at all upset with my decision to switch, but the Fascinate is by NO MEANS old hardware right now, in fact using the Thunderbolt makes me appreciate how good Samsung was on the hardware side.

I agree, and with an unlocked bootloader and a whole SLEW of awesome devs that I know are gonna jump on this beast of a phone and with Sammy leaking source code and updates like EB01/EC01 for free beta testing, we don't need official OTA updates. I WILL BE GETTING THE GALAXY S 2!

That is a great question. I bought a used Fascinate to hold me over, and to learn the Android system. I am hoping that later in the year I can get something with dual core and LTE. But I also don't want to give up battery life. So this may not be possible.
I like Android, but have a bad opinion of Samsung compared to my previous multiple HTC WinMo devices.
So I want:
For the OS: Android, likely not Microsoft, never Apple.
Manufacturer: HTC, maybe Moto, Samsung is low on the list.
Carrier: Verizon...........period.. What I need it for, other choices fail.
Dual core would be nice, but not at the expensive of a lot of battery life.
I want LTE. Not badly, but there is not much reason to throw away a 2 year contract and not get it.
The Thunderbolt is almost it, and may BE it, for me. Maybe I really don't want dual core just yet anyway. The new SGS II is probably nice, but I'm sure I would be returning in to Verizon as it would have the same hardware weaknesses that I see in the Fascinate.
So I'm waiting it out for now to see what else comes along. Until I smash this P.O.S. Fascinate against the ground and I'm forced to decide.
It's going to be really tough for me to buy another Samsung phone. The internal guts of the Fascinate are awesome (which is why I bought it), but the lack of support and poorly written code is a real let-down. I'm definitely going to explore other phone manufacturers and carriers to see how things compare. If another network suits my daily needs, I'll definitely switch... possibly to T-Mobile given their upcoming line-up of phones. I'm not excited about the possible AT&T merger, but I definitely won't be locking myself into any contracts in the near future. Android progresses way too quickly to get locked into anything longer than 1 year - and those contracts are going away.
As much as most would hate to hear it, if the iPhone had Google Navigation, a universal micro-USB port and maybe removable internal storage + battery... I would consider it. I doubt those things would ever happen, so no iPhone for me. An MIUI-compatible Android would be much better anyways.
Galaxy S2. Samsung is improving. I mean, GB is rolling out to the i9000 before any other phone. Their hardware is superior. With the Galaxy S2, it's EXT4. AND, the bootloader is gonna be open. It seems that they ARE listening to the consumers. Though I'm angry that we still don't have 2.2, I blame Verizon for that more than Samsung.

Losing faith in atrix?

Anyone else slightly losing faith in their atrix?
I just put gingerbread on my cappy and I'm so impressed by the speed. I know I'm comparing froyo to gingerbread but for a dual core Id expect a bit betterr performance. The cappy handles live wallpapers much better than the atrix.
What's keeping me here is the fact that moto seems to actually care, the phone has gotten two updates already, and while second one has lower my phone down, I imagine that will be fixed.
Do you think the atrix is going to "fly" once gingerbread comes out for it? That's what I'm hoping for, or even if moto unlocked the bl
It will fly with gingerbread!
yea my buddy has an incredible and gingerbread made that phone buttery smooth.
this phone is still new.. I'll give it at least six months before I think about getting rid of it

This, I believe, refers to what the OP may be describing.
Smartphones are newer and better all the time. People on here buy every new phone! The Atrix new luster and excitement has worn off, and people are ready to move on to the next big thing(seems to be Galaxy S 2).
Thats the nature of the tech industry, and more specifically the smartphone industry.
I don't think I'd mind waiting 6 months, but also part of me says that 6 months is a long time to get the phone to a smooth point.
It will fly if we get the 2.4 gingerbread optimized for dual cores.
Hey,
I had my Evo for about a year before having to make the decision to switch to AT&T. Here in the USVI, AT&T is just plain out faster, calls are clearer, there are less issues with the service and so on and so forth. I would have kept my Evo until the Evo 3D came out or something.
The Atrix is a beast of a phone and the service is great! I'm satisfied with what I have and from this point on, it can only get better.
Have faith, man.
I never got all those comments about how unresponsive the Atrix is.. mine is super responsive. Granted I come from a Touch HD (WinMo) phone which was friggin' slow as molasses by today's standards so yeah.. but hey the iPhone 4 is supposed to be a snappyness reference yet I constantly see my friends iPhones lag doing some basic thing at some point, and I find my Atrix to be way up there, so i'm not sure about all the complaining.. I don't get it.

Things that I would like to change:
-Different Themed Notifications bar with GingerBread Update
-HSPA+
I like the phone, I dont have any other problems with it. I can live with a locked bootloader, to me its not that big of a deal anymore because we wont get it unlocked....
I lost faith in my phone months ago. Wish I held out for an actually good phone.

The thing that sucks about this phone is mostly just the locked bootloader... sure gingerbread may come, and we finally got the hspa+, but what I really want is to be able to flash custom roms. Until then we're basically crippled and are stuck with clunky and featureless motoblur which barely taps into this things potential.

Lol.. No matter how amazing a device is, there will always be those who criticize it.
The hardware specs and technological innovations implemented on this phone are unlike any phone ever produced. For you to imply that this is not "actually a good phone" makes you appear very ignorant. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way.
I think the main issue here is usability for the average non-tech savvy user.. When they don't understand why the phone isn't doing what they want it to do, they assume it can't or it just sucks.. There are some users such as myself who understand the progression of new hardware & the intricacies involved with getting software to interface correctly with it. We expect to run into issues & focus on solutions rather than complaining.
If you want an environment where everything just works without much input needed from you, consider steve jobs walled garden aka iOS
Otherwise, dig in, try to understand how android & the phone works.. It's only gonna get better.

Most roms are just gingerbread with features that don't work. Flashing roms is fun until you needs to actually use your phone. Custom roms and kernals have so many bugs.

No one expects to run into issues with a 600 dollar piece of technology. They should, and rightfully so, expect it to work. THe G2x seems to have almost identical specs, and that phone performs much better under all situations. Android isn't about forcing the user to do unnecessary steps to make his phone work on par with any other on the market, its about giving you the opportunity to allow you to do more than whats on the the market. I can say right now, for the past 3 android phones i've boughten, i've never had to do anything special to make them work. Power on. Power off. Done. What makes the atrix different?
I know that sounds like a hateful post, but it's not. I just don't think it's fair for people to say a 600 dollar piece of electronic isn't gonna work right out of the box. I do still love my atrix, the form is great and the fingerprint scanner is very nice. But my concerns are legitimate and aren't solvable by steve jobs.
I'm fed up. Totally disappointed by the phone. The webtop mode remindes me of the carphone idea. Seemed good at the time buy useless shortly after. Hopefuly the galaxy S 2 will be announced tomorrow for att. If not on ordering from UK. This is the best android phone out right now for AT&T. Almost makes me wish I didn't jump ship for the iPhone 4 in June from T-Mobile (g2x & nexus s)

I think AT&T is announcing the samsung infuse tomorrow, not the SGSII, but who knows. I agree, webtop was cool for that first time you show your friends, but i've never used it since. While i have a HUGE grudge against samsung from the captivate debacle, i might try the SGSII but that probably won't hit until july like the cappy.
I switched to an inspire, I love the phone and everything about it, no lag with the latest cm. I'm switching back to the atrix for the ffc and battery life, battery life is abysmal on the inspire.
