If you are using Gmail 2.3.5, check out the feedback ratings on the market. A LOT of people are complaining about that issue, as well as the fact that the update disabled the functionality of third-party widgets.
If you're not using 2.3.5, for the love of God turn off automatic updating and don't install the newest version...

Gmail apps vs email app

I actually prefer to use the email app. Problem is, the email app doesn't seem to download updates until I open it (even with it on ignore in Task MGR). Email app set to download every 10 mins. The Gmail app, however, seems to auto download updates.
Any seen or know of a solution?

The Gmail app supports push notifications, which means as soon as you get an email, you'll get it on your phone. But with the email app, it resorts to polling (checking for new messages every 10 minutes) so it refreshes only when you open it
Lucky you, but my gmail app doesn't do anything. I feel that its always off since I don't get any email notification on ie.
Makes sense. I just like the look of the email app better, but I guess u need to stick with gmail for the push ability.

Go to Settings in the Gmail app and make sure that Email Notifications is checked. That's the whole point of using Gmail compared to Hotmail/Yahoo.. (atleast for now)
It annoys me how you can't select multiples in th stock app. I use K9, it has colours (including led flash) for each account, push, and most importantly, multiple select.

Can the SE email app be removed without causing any problems?

What about in Settings/Data Sync - I think you need Google Sync, and then Google Mail Sync selected too.
settings ---> data synchronization ---> synchronize with Gmail
right, I forgot to check that back after the 100th times of rooting.
Thank you,

[Q] GMAIL not auto-updating

Hi,
Recently, my GMAIL stopped auto-receiving mail and will not update until I manually sync it.
It was working fine until yesterday evening.
Any idea how to fix this?

Did you change any settings? I know it doesn't sync as fast anymore when one has the "undo" function enabled, found under gmail settings. GL
I was having the same issue and addidng to that was that I was not receiving all the email. It showed that there were new emails but those were not always appering. Fixed it by wiping data with Titanium.

To my knowledge, I didn't change any settings. Looking at the feedback in the market, I noticed that some of the other more recent comments show the same issue.
I think it was Gmail, not your phone. I had the same problem today. Then I got a bunch of emails all at once.
I'm having the same issue today as well. Probably a server issue.
+1 here, very annoying!
looks like this is a google server issue and they are looking into it:

It appears that Google has fixed this as of 6pm eastern

Gmail in email app

Suddenly today Email app refuses to connect to Gmail!
It can send emails but not receive saying error. Also connection test gives error.
Gmail itself works but it's disgusting app so I don't use it and it doesn't even store emails on phone.
Did Google change it's policy or what? Help please.
Everyone can't connect to gmail imap servers too.
Just have to wait it out.

No I didn't.
I just set it up on my phone and it seems to be working... could it have been a glitch on the imap servers?

yes it's true, it was just a glitch. Now it's working here too.

[Q] Email Sync Frequency Not working

Hi Guys,
Wondering if there's anyone who can help me with an issue I'm having.
I've set my corporate email up (NOT Gmail) and set it to sync every hour, however this setting doesn't seem to get applied and I'm receiving notifications as soon as emails arrive in my inbox i.e. push notifications.
Anyone else having this issue? Or know how to stop this from happening?
Cheers,
B

Having the same issue and I've posted this very same question a good while back too.
The only "valid" response that I got was install a mail app on your phone...
I haven't done that and I'm just living with the push as it is :/
Due to Franco's Kernel my battery lasts more than a day so I'm happy enough (meaning I don't mind the extra battery drain from this)
But I'd still like it if it were once per (half) hour

Really, that's the only solution!?!?! Surely this BUG in the android mail app has a fix somewhere??? I think the app is perfect in every way except for this one thing!

My topic just got no further answers..
Another one, "best" response was to get an app
Several more topics but non consist of any information about this ANNOYING BUG! :/

Thanks mate! I guess most people either want push notifications, or they're using another app for non-gmail email...
No problem.
Still doesn't fix the issue at hand though!
So if anyone has any advice how to fix this, feel free!!
I have noticed this too with my work e-mail account which connects to a corporate Exchange server using ActiveSync. I noticed that when setting the e-mail to anything other than push nothing changed apart from the battery usage for the exchange service on the phone, which surprisingly seemed to go up.
Is everyone who is having this issue using Exchange e-mail accounts?

I'm only syncing my hotmail email account and that gives problems for me. Not sure about the google one as I don't really use it.
Anyone got any solution besides an app?!

How have you configured Hotmail? Has it been set up as an Active sync (corporate) account (will have options for calendar and contacts syncing) or a POP3 account?
Using POP3 will probably let you choose a checking frequency, but you lose the option to delete messages from the server etc.

So all these topics including in the ask anything topic and no one even bothered to mention this? :/
It's written nowhere that this is the solution. And damn it's very easy too
So basically if you use google for calendar / contacts its the following:
* Ability to delete mails from server -> connect as Corporate
* sync frequency -> connect as Mail
-------
This is my first android phone so the difference was unknown to me sadly.
Thanks!

[Q] Email notification does not always work after KitKat upgrade

Hi guys,
i've updated to KitKat from 4.3 on my Nexus and now i am not receiving new email sound notifications unless i open the app and mark all messages as read. This is my work account (exchange) and the issue is really annoying because my daily email flow is about 100 messages. Most require my attention right away and i have to turn the phone on and off every few minutes to see if new message is there.
i've tried re-adding the account, changed notification sound, updated to 4.4.1 and then to 4.4.2 but the issue is still there.
any suggestions?
device is complete stock.

I'm having the same issue here. Did not notice the issue on 4.4 or 4.4.1 but as soon as I updated to stock 4.4.2 the issue showed up. Sometimes the unread email will be there if I open the app but no notification sound or icon. I'm also getting delayed push emails randomly. It seems to work fine for an hour or two then no emails will show up unless I manually pull and I'll get a flood and e-mails will come in normally for a while.

i am still getting emails pushed, but no notification sounds...
any ideas how to fix this???
I tried wiping my device and flashing the factory image, issues remain.
Something I have noticed is that the second I open the Email application, the messages show up in the list .. of course no notifications.. Another behavior is that when the sync is configured with "Push" it is supposed to be realtime, and before KitKat, it was that way.. I'd get an alert on my phone the next second I received an email.. However, that also seems to be screwed up as well. I was hoping this 4.4.1 or 4.4.2 would resolve the issue but it didn't.
So I contacted google about this yesterday and the first few emails went nowhere. Then they transferred me to a 'specialist', here is their response:
Hello Brian,
Thank you for your response. Not being able to sync your emails through exchange is frustrating. I would be more than happy to assist you in syncing with the Exchange server. Unfortunately, at this time in order to sync with the Exchange server you need to access a third party app through 'Google Play'. In the future there may be updates to the Android OS that may allow for syncing with the Exchange server. Currently, Kitkat is unable to facilitate syncing with the Exchange server.
If you have any further questions, concerns or downloading a third party app does not resolve the issue please feel free to reply to this email or contact us at support.google.com.
Best Regards,
Valerie

WOW!
Will they pay for that third party application for us???
I remember how everybody was bashing Apple when their update broke exchange sync. But they fixed it quite fast.
Never thought i will see that approach from Google...

anyone?
still have this annoying issue!

Same here.. I really need a fix for this, I keep missing important messages
I think Google tweaked the email client to turn off notifications unless you open the app. If you get the first email, it will make a sound. If you don't open the app and check it, it will stop notifying you of further emails. I'm really not sure what the solution will be to this issue..
This is on my Nexus 5, but I have the same email client that the N4 does.

That's a Gmail setting, we're referring to the native email app that handles Exchange accounts
For me not
It always works for me
try using the application of your email provider(f.e. if you have a microsoft account use outlook.com app). that is what i do and i don't have any problem anymore. if you like to have all your different accounts in one application i would suggest to find another application. droid mail and k9 mail are quite good as far as i know

It makes an audible beep every time you get a new email in the "Email" app even if you don't open the app every time? Are you on 4.4.2?

I use it for my Exchange account for work email, there's no other email provider client. I'll see if I can get droid mail or K9, but they're relatively expensive options for just this 1 issue.
