(Working) Ubuntu on A500 - Acer Iconia A500

Note: You need to be rooted for this to work.
I've just installed and run it on my a500 (After a full backup through CWM of course). In settings, I set it to install Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat. It installed fine, although you have to go through some trial and error with the settings panel:
Loop file must be "/data/local/tmp/Linux.loop"
"Bind Android" must be enabled
"Allow write on /system" must be enabled!
Linux is activated through a terminal by typing "linuxchroot". Here is an extract from the terminal. (I'll upload screenshots when I find a working program.)

I'm running a stock 4.010.13_COM_GEN2 rom.
I'm working my way around the console now. As you can see, apt-get and python work. I just need to figure out how (if it's possible) to install gnome onto this installation.
Update:
So it turns out "add-apt-repository" isn't installed by default in the usual place. Or the shortcut doesn't work. Either way, I found that the /usr/bin directory contains all the required files. Since this linux seems to log you in directly into root, which might not have well-made shortcuts, you cannot access the applications normally. I cd'd inbto /usr/bin and add-apt-repository works. Now to see if usr can be the default login.

Alright. Forget about trying to get a GUI working on this type of linux. Nvidia's Tegra drivers for Xorg are MIA.

Getting the following:
/system/xbin/linuxchroot.sh: UID: readonly variable

When do you get the message? Right after you type "linuxchroot"? If so, try typing su then hitting enter; and then typing "linuxchroot"

Both work on the iconia. The only fiddling I had to do was change a CD command from the guides suggested command to CD /mnt/external_sdcard. I am able to boot both from my iconia .

Idea: Install GNOME and then a VNC client and connect.
I'll try it later. Will post my conclusions/steps taken/results here.

You cannot run Xorg with Tegra 2 drivers when your GPU is already in use by Android. Either you have to run some sort of a virtual Xorg driver and use VNC to connect to the Linux, or you have to use native Linux and scrap Android.

Connecting via VNC works just fine, I'm doing it all the time... Just don't try running a heavyweight like GNOME or KDE, use something like LXDE (looks ok, but it's a lot faster!). There are plenty of tutorials on how to set this up on the internet.

Guide to install LXDE on samsung galaxy s

So 3 days of trying to install ubuntu on chroot and a little knowledge of linux and terminal, i was rather surprised to log into it and there i was, faced with an LXDE interface.
I want to thank coralic, burningbroccoli, lifehacker, josh_axeY and backfireNL for supplying the information i needed to make this possible.
So a brief overview of whats going to be done. First we will need to root our galaxy s in order to access terminal. An ubuntu image will be created and used in chroot environment by mounting (loading) it. Finally a vnc server will be setup and will be logged in using androidVNC.
So for the guide i suppose!
Guide:
First your going to need to root your phone. This is to access terminal and enter the commands required. This is taken from backfireNl's easy way to root your phone.
1. Download: 2.1 Update .zip
2. Put update.zip to root of /sdcard (not /sdcard/sd) (not on the physical SD card but the Internal SD card/Phone Memory)
3. Turn off phone
4. Hold down volume up + home button + power (tip: release the power button for half a second when you see the samsung logo)
5. Phone will reboot into recovery mode
6. Wait until you see the Recovery Screen and then release the buttons
7. With the volume down key go to the option: "apply: /sdcard/update.zip"
8. Press the home button
9. Phone will start updating
10. Phone reboots... and there you go! your phone is rooted!
So that wasnt too hard was it? Although once you have done this, you will need to download a couple of programs from the market. Goto market and download the following programs:
-Busybox
-Terminal Emulator
-androidVNC
Ensure all of these are installed as this is what you shall need in order to successfully run LXDE on your phone.
Next is the image for the install! i will post up an image file for download although for the sake of people wanting the whole info on how-to here it is.
1) login on your ubuntu machine and fire up terminal.
2) login as the super user by entering "sudo su"
3) you will be required to enter your su password, enter this and you will be logged in as root
4) In terminal enter "apt-get install rootstock"
5) One this package is all installed, enter the following code into the computer terminal:
sudo rootstock -f localhost --login ubuntu --password ubuntu --imagesize 1G --notarball --dist lucid --seed ssh,tightvncserver,lxde,expect
6)The image will be stored in the home folder. The image will need to be a .img file or it wont work. So extract the file if necessesary and rename the file so it reads "ubuntu.img"
7)Now you will need to put the ubuntu.img on the phone. The directory which it needs to be installed into is "/sdcard/ubuntu/"
8) All done for this step!
Ok so you have everything setup and ready to do the fun part! so lets get everything mounted and configured!
1)Open up terminal emulator on your phone
2)enter "su". this logs you in as superuser
3)I found you will need to make the following directories in order to work, so in terminal emulator enter:
mkdir /data/local/mnt
mkdir /data/local/mnt/proc
mkdir /data/local/mnt/dev
mkdir /data/local/mnt/dev/pts
4)enter "cd sdcard" then "cd ubuntu"
5)You will then be in the folder with the image. Type into terminal:
export HOME=/root
export USER=root
export PATH=$bin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin:$PATH
busybox mount -t ext3 ubuntu.img /data/local/mnt
busybox mount -t proc proc /data/local/mnt/proc
busybox mount -t devpts devpts /data/local/mnt/dev/pts
busybox chroot /data/local/mnt /bin/bash
/etc/init.d/ssh start
6) Although it doesnt seem it, your now into your distro!
Okay so your into your distro but it looks all horrid and "text based". wouldnt it be lovely to see a proper desktop? so lets go!
1) enter into terminal "apt-get install x11vnc" this installs x11vnc to your phone. This may take a while depending on how your connected to the net
2) once x11vnc is installed, type "x11vnc -storepasswd" and enter a password. It will ask to verify the password so enter it again, then enter "y" to setup a password for it
3) first enter "vncserver" to initiate the server on your distro. For some reason without this, androidVNC will start to connect then crash
4)finally enter "x11vnc -usepw -find"
now your x11vnc is setup using a password hooray! last step in this guide and you will be away in no time! So is everyone ready?
1)hit the button on the bottom to return to the desktop but keep terminal emulator running
2)goto androidVNC and enter the following:
Nickname: root
Password: (whatever password you setup in x11vnc)
address: localhost
Port: 5900
color format can be anything, i set it to 4 bpp and use local mouse pointer
3)Simply click "connect" and viola! welcome to your impressive lxde environment!
This has been done before although i tried to do every step, base it around the phone as much as possible so no connecting to the computer.
any questions or problems i will try my best to help you guys, and thanks for the guys who helped me on this voyage.
i will write a bash script soon to try and incorporate as much of the manual typing in as possible

okay ive written a bash script to automate most of the process although there are a few things i could tweak before im fully happy

people ask me the reason for doing this and i have 2 replies:
1)to show the true potential of this phone (and working in a phone shop it really works)

okay so this is installing ubuntu into a chrooted environment and vnc'ing to it.
does anyone know if it is possible to blow away android and install pure debian on it? does anyone know of a hardware list on the sbc in this thing and what sort of support one might need to hack in to get a such a thing to work?
I will apologise now for the delay in image upload, the image file is 1gb and im having trouble finding a place to upload it.
In terms of installing a clean debian would need more than just a straightforward port. You would be looking at making an environment which supports the arm architecture, porting all of the drivers over, creating an option to support telephony, messages and gps too. If you wanted a debian environment it would probably be best to either run it like how the n900 does or getting a distro of it which is specifically made towards mobiles and modifying it.
Although you have an extremely good point there! Tell you what, once ive got everything running on here i will have a look and see what i can do in terms of atleast getting a debian shell running or a limo version

Just create zip/tar-ball of img file and it will become around 300MB. Then you can upload it on multiupload (or megaupload/rapidshare/mediafire).
I just created that image too and will be testing on my Galaxy S soon, so if its working for me then I will upload my image too.

The image is only 11MB and is corrupted
Moreover, I tried to mount my ubuntu.img to /data/local/mnt but it is giving error (sort of -> loop back device can't be mounted: No such file or directory) although I created and checked /data/local/mnt directory which exists
Try creating a second loop device with: mknod /dev/loop2 b 7 0

im guessing because the image is corrupt, your unable to mount it.
I have just uploaded my bash script making it easier to mount each time.

ensure you have made the directories explained in my first post.
pop the hsetup.sh file inside /sdcard/ubuntu (along with your image)
then fire up terminal emulator and type:
su
cd sdcard
cd ubuntu
sh hsetup.sh
This mounts everything for you and logs you into LXDE, all you need to do after is type in:
/etc/init.d/ssh start
vncserver
x11vnc -find
Then log in using androidVNC
i will attempt to upload the file to another location and i will test the image file to ensure its not a compression error
i apologise, ive just looked at the zip file and it is corrupt.

I found the problem. As mentioned by ArminC, I found that there isn't any loop device node in my mobile hence I created one and its mounted

Oh boy... where to get started. You could install Ubuntu without overwriting your W7 installation. Then you would "dual boot" your computer. As it boots up, you choose which OS to load. Or of course you could install Ubuntu on a computer by itself.
You don't need to install Ubuntu just to use ADB. ADB runs on both Win and Linux. What is it that you are trying to do? If you just want to learn linux, then make yourself a live CD and you won't have to worry about overwriting any operating systems.
But this is not a linux forum. If this is something that you are interested in, then google is your friend.
if you are interested in trying ubuntu, you might check this out: http://wubi-installer.org/. or just run a LiveCD, as already suggested.

Thanks for noticing that! I have updated the rules with the correct ones. I have an htc also and uploaded the wrong rules. I am also on Ubuntu Lucid 64 bit and this is what worked for me. I also have done this on my netbook which runs 9.10 so I am really not sure what the issue is then. Did you use ADB from the sdk or from the app inventor adb in the guide?
If I read correctly when browsing for this topic, your instruction is to drop in these rule files, and then run adb using sudo
When using sudo to run adb, it'll always work, regardless of what's in your rules file
If you have your rules file correct, you don't need to do sudo adb
Just adb will work fine

I did try this, I removed my rules and reloaded my udev folder then tried adb with sudo and it was a no go (I get nothing listed under the list of devices). Also the only way I could get adb to recognize anything without sudo was by adding a line in the rules making my user as the owner, but even still without sudo under devices I get ???????????? no permissions. With sudo and the rules everything works fine which is why I wrote the guide that way.

Thanks the3dman for the guide. Unfortunately I am still having problems as when I run the sudo ./adb devices nothing is listed. I followed the directions step by step and also confirmed my Vibrant is in debug mode (also confirms on the phone it is in debug mode when connected via usb. I even rebooted everything again, double checked everything and still no devices listed. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 Any ideas? Thanks so much!

Four Step ADB installation in Ubuntu
Here is a simple guide without using custom debs:
1. Download the SDK:
wget dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r07-linux_x86.tgz
2. Extract the archive to the current directory and move into the extracted directory.
tar xvfz android-sdk_r07-linux_x86.tgz && cd android-sdk-linux_x86
3. Move the "tools" folder to your local system folder:
sudo mv tools /usr/local/share/android-tools
4. Create a symbolic link to the adb executable:
sudo ln -s /usr/local/share/android-tools/adb /usr/local/bin/
Done!
from a terminal type:
sudo adb devices (This will start the server and search for connected devices)
Are you running Ubuntu 64bit? If so you need to make sure that you have the 32bit compatibility libraries installed. From the command line run the following:
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
This will allow you to run 32bit apps in 32bit mode. Not sure if this is whats causing your issue, but it might be worth a shot.

Oh, I am running 32bit Ubuntu so that was not the problem.

This is not working for some people that is what is being figured out. I am in the process of updating my guide and the new and better one should be up shortly.

what i am trying to do is be able to use adb, at the moment I can't seem to use it because my default.prop is not correct so i heard i have to use linux to be able to edit my default prop...when i try to adb push or remount i get permission denied and yet I have superuser permission and everything.
do you have to root your phone while being an administrator on the computer?

Try putting your phone in clockwork recovery then issuing the adb commands, and yes your phone has to be rooted.

while "lsusb" gives me that:

you'll need to edit a usb rule to "look" for the samsung phone. i forgot what file to edit and what to put in there, once i find the file, i'll post it from my laptop.

[GUIDE] Lazyman's installation guide to ADB on Ubuntu 10.10 - Now with Ubuntu 11.10 !

I've been searching around the forums,the stickies and Google on how to install ADB in Ubuntu from scratch but I wasn't able to get a guide anywhere. What I found mostly are for Windows or little bits and pieces of info which did not cover the whole thing. Which is when I decided to grab some Tab and Mountain Dew, and Google my way through to make it work and share it to those who had trouble or no idea how to install it on Ubuntu.
When I'm writing this, I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 64bit to install and run everything. I will update the guide periodically for updates and other things. There was mentions of using Eclipse SDK while searching around, but I won't be touching on that. There's another guide for it at the end of my guide. I have yet to encounter any problems while using ADB in 64bit environment. I've tested it out on the 32bit platform as well and it works. It'll also work on SD and NAND versions of Android for the HD2, since it's my main phone. Also, this is my first time making a guide, so bear with me if there's any mistakes. I've checked the article a few times hoping that it's clear and easy to understand. From
Steps 1 to 4 and Steps 6 and 7, there's no differences in installation instructions for Ubuntu 11.04. You do have to take special note in Step 5 and the key difference of ADB working for your device in Ubuntu 11.04 is found here.
For Ubuntu 11.10, you can see the guide here. Credit goes to loveubuntu for making it.
Step 1. Install JDK
You'll need to install JDK for ADB to work. If you have already installed JDK, I recommend reinstalling it again, just in case there are new updates or you have the older version.
In Terminal, do the following

Extract the android-sdk-linux_x86 folder from android-sdk_rXX-linux_x86.tgz. Just double click the tgz file, and drag-n-drop the that lone folder to your desired location. In my case, I extracted the files to my Home Folder, which I highly recommend. I'll also advice to not renaming the folder.
Step 3. Choose packages to install
In Terminal, type the following -

$ ./android update sdk
The 'Android SDK and AVD Manager' window will appear (screencap below). You can choose to accept all of them or just install all except for Android 1.5 and 1.6. Once installation is finished, it will prompt you to restart the manager. Just click 'Yes' and close the manager
Step 4. Check your device's permission
Now head over to the platform-tools directory

Check if you have permission for your device

If you're getting the following, go on to Step 5.

If you're getting something like this or other random numbers with the word device next to it, congrats! You now could use ADB. Now go on to Step 7.

Step 5. Giving permission to your device
You'll need to create a certain udev rule. First off type the following in Terminal:

For those using Ubuntu 10.10, use the following! For Ubuntu 11.04 users, please scroll down a little for 11.04 guide.
Ubuntu 10.10
Once the gedit window pops-up, type the following line.

Take note of ATTRS{idVendor}=="####". Replace #### to the correct Vendor ID of your device. If you're using Acer, then it's 0502, for HTC it's 0bb4. For Ubuntu 11.04 users, you'll need an 8 digit number, which is slightly different from Ubuntu 10.10. Copy and paste the following code in the 99-android.rules file you created

Copy the ID numbers, 22b8:2d66 for my case, and replace the ####:#### in the 99-android.rules file. Save the file and close gedit and execute the following in Terminal.

Congrats! Now you can use ADB in Ubuntu! Now hop on to Step 6!
If that fails and still give you "???????????? no permissions", try restarting the adb server. That should do the trick. If that still doesn't work, check the file, 99-android.rules, that you created earlier. Most likely you have put in the wrong Vendor ID.

Step 6. Now to have fun!
Head down to Captainkrtek's ADB Workshop and Guide for everyone to learn how to use ADB. Take note that while using adb in Linux, you'll need to type ./adb to execute adb unless you create a path in bashrc. Go to Step 7 for that . For now, here are some examples on running adb if you don't create a path.
To get into the phone

Also, do take note that when you pull a file, it will save itself in your android-sdk-linux_86 folder if no destination folder was given.
Step 7. Create path for ADB

Add the following line at the very end of the file. Once you're done, save and exit.

Now you can just run adb like it's a command.
Edit: Okay, for some odd reason, while the above worked for my desktop, it failed when I tried it on my notebook. If you tried to create a path but it failed, here's an alternative method

Once the gedit window pops up, scroll down to the very bottom of the file and add this line

I have a guide to setup up a build enviroment for compiling android on a ubuntu 10.10 64bit or 32bit that covers adb also along with test signing. Just google guide to compiling android, covers cm7 and you will find it. It might be under gridlock32404 which was my old user name

Personally, I don't think a .deb file is required. Almost everything can be found in the repository anyways and it's quite easy to set up using terminal, and uh, I never really made debs before either

However, when I realized that the SDK package is now titled "android-sdk-linux_x86" with that tiny little "x" before the "86", I got it to work flawlessly.
Now my Ubuntu ADB installation works easier than my Windows ADB!

Thanks, I'm gonna try it out on my notebook when I get a chance on Monday. Left it at my workplace. Hopefully, that little space is the reason why the path didn't work on my notebook .
As for the HowtoForge guide link, I wasn't able to find a more updated version for it. It'll be great if they update that guide as well though.
It really is kind of sad, and ironic, that Windows is dominating even on a Linux based OS which is Android. But after playing around with both Windows and Ubuntu for ADB, I personally find ADB on Ubuntu is much more easier (and a bit more stable) to handle. Maybe it's because I usually work with command line on Linux and more on GUI on Windows.

Anybody know howto - about fastboot.exe I mean I have done all the steps ahead and have adb installed but cant figure out how to install fastboot in platform-tools directory.
I reinstalled it again but there is no fastboot.exe it hadn`t appeared in platform-tools. 3 month`s ago I did it just like that and it installed fastboot automagically but this time I just don`t now what to do and where to dig. Not able to flash radio at the moment.

I'm not sure why but I can confirm that the ubuntu installer in the market will not work on the DX at least with my rom/setup. I spent hours on this and could not get chroot to go. If you figure it out please send me a PM.
I have ubuntu 11.04 and Backtrack5 working on my Xoom however. No issues on that device.

This guide is outdated and I can no longer support it as I no longer own an HP Touchpad.

This guide is intended for users who already have a Cyanogenmod firmware dual-booting with WebOS via Moboot. I, in no way shape or form, take any credit for this. I am simply posting this as a simple, step-by-step guide on how to triple boot (as there aren't any that I have found in this section). All credits go to their respective developers. I am in no way, shape, or form anything beyond an amateur developer who happens to be an advanced Linux and Android user. Also, I cannot be held liable for any issues you may encounter while or after following this guide.

Obvious Bugs and Things That Don't Work
-Wifi signal is a bit weak
-Camera
-Sound
-Microphone
-Bluetooth (apparently there's a fix for this floating around one of the Ubuntu threads)
-Compositing
-Multi-touch (no right click :/)
Prerequisites
-Cyanogenmod (Touchpad)
-Moboot (Touchpad)
-Novacom Driver (computer)
-Novaterm (computer)
-WebOS SDK (computer)
On Your Touchpad...
-Boot into WebOS
-Connect to your computer via USB (do NOT select USB Drive mode)
-At the home screen in the "Just Type..." search bar, type the following:

-You will see "Developer Mode" in the search results, open it and turn the toggle in the right hand corner of the card on
-Now stop touching it and get onto your computer
On Your Computer...
-Open Novaterm (if you are running a Linux distribution, this can simply be done in a terminal by becoming root and executing the command "novaterm"
-Now let's make some terminal love!
Mount the boot directory as readable/writable:

Change directories to the boot directory:

CHANGE DIRECTORY!!!!

Unmount the linux directory:

Reboot! (You may have to do this a few times, you may get errors... you may keep trying?!)

That's it, you're done. I advise opening a terminal once you're booted and updating the system with the "pacman -Syu" command (it definitely improves touch screen a bunch).

I want to know too.
added archlinux to my previous dual booting touchpad yesterday and i can no longer write to my external storage now!
I boot into webos and connect via usb I can still see my files but can't write
and CM9 can't see the partition at all....please help!

i encountered MANY MANY issues trying to install this with my previous install of CM9...
had CWM, WebOS, CM9. still failed on many attempts to install from nova.
its best practice to doctor, install cm9, THEN follow these steps, will install perfectly! using right now
only issue im having is pacman command wont run, even with sudo, continuing to troubleshoot
edit** hmmm...after first reboot, arch refuses to load, and my CM9 wont display "sd" card to check uImage.archlinuxarm for commands/paths, same djxstream. WebOS internalz wont install either to view on touchpad :/
got it to work. i didnt have some dependencies installed. How do you bring up the keyboard to type in the terminal?
edit: ok found it.

yeah, got it running after setting up wifi, took like 2 min after posting that, but arch still isnt loading :/

I installed XServer and XTerm and Ubuntu Chroot, then got LXDE on there. It runs fine, but I used WebOS Doctor to make a 4GB EXT partition by editing a text file in Linux. I followed a tutorial to do this awhile back. Now I want to tri-boot the actual 0.0.4 Ubuntu, CM9, and WebOS. 1. Is this even possible? 2. Will the 4GB EXT interfere with anything and what do I have to do to that partition?

Anyone tried this?:
sudo depmod -a
sudo gedit /etc/modules
sudo update-rc.d bcattach_srv defaults
sudo reboot
That is the fix for the UBU install, just checking to see if this works on a TP with Arch already installed. I just havent gotten around to installing this yet but want all my ducks in a row for when I do. Thanks.
This may even help the already working WIFI.
edit: After the second command, a text editor should open up. Add "ath6kl" without the quotes to the bottom of the file, push save, close the editor, and go on the the next commands. If the touchscreen stops responding, hold power and home until the device turns off and boot back into Ubuntu and try again. It's a known bug. The last command should reboot the device again. Boot back into Ubuntu and you should have working wifi and bluetooth.
