[GUIDE] How to Root the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 [Video Walkthrough] - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

A big thanks to RoboBear, tphillips, Lorddeff07, and anyone else that has helped make this happen.
I try to make my guides simple and straightforward so that the average user can root their device. I show every detail and walk you through the process. This guide is a complete video walkthrough on how to root the Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi with edits based on the issues that some may run into with previous guides. Without further ado, let's get started!

◄●REQUIRED DOWNLOADS●►
Just download, do not install or run anything yet.
◄●Instructions●►
This method is done on Windows. I recommend this way as its the easiest. If you don't have Windows, borrow from a friend.
◄●Downloading Files and Installing Drivers●►
Download the I have linked.
Extract the zip file by right clicking and selecting "Extract All," or by using an extracting program of your choice.
Open the folder and double click the driver file labeled "GT-p7510_USB_Driver_v1_3_2360_0-Escape.exe"
Install the driver. Its pretty much just Next, Next, Install, and Exit when its done.
◄●Connecting the Device●►
Turn on USB Debugging by going to Settings>Applications>Development and checking USB debugging. Click Okay to confirm
Power off the device by holding the power button and selecting Power off
Put the device into Downloading mode
Hold the Vol Down button (the left Volume button) and then hold the Power button as well.
Keep holding until you see two icons. First you'll see the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 logo and then the icons will show up. Let go.
Press the Vol Up button (the right Volume button) to select Downloading mode.
Connect the device to your computer with the USB cable.
◄●Flashing a Custom Recovery●►
Go into the same root folder as before.
Double click the root application named "Odin3_v1.85.exe"
Select PDA
Double click the clockworkmod recovery file labeled "recovery-cwm_4.0.0.4-sam-tab-10.1.tar.md5" to select it.
Click Start
Once it is complete, you can close the program
◄●Completing the Root●►
Disconnect your USB cable
On your device, turn off USB Debugging by going to Settings>Applications>Development and unchecking USB debugging
Plug your USB cable back in
On your computer, go to the same root folder as before and transfer the zip file labeled "Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip" to your device. Don't put it inside any folder.
Confirm that it was transferred by clicking inside the device folder
Power off the device by holding the power button and selecting Power off
Put the device into Recovery mode
Hold the Vol Down button (the left Volume button) and then hold the Power button as well.
Keep holding until you see two icons. First you'll see the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 logo and then the icons will show up. Let go.
Press the Vol Down button (the left Volume button) to highlight the left icon.
Press the Vol Up button (the right Volume button) to select Recovery mode.
You should see that you are in ClockworkMod Recovery. If not, start over
Use the volume buttons to highlight "Install zip from SD card" and hit the Power button to select it.
Use the volume buttons to highlight "Choose zip from SD card" and hit the Power button to select it.
Use the volume buttons to highlight "Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip" and hit the Power button to select it.
Use the volume buttons to highlight "Yes - Install..." and hit the Power button to select it.
When it finishes, the last line should say "Install from sdcard complete."
Use the volume buttons to highlight "*****Go Back*****" and hit the Power button to select it.
Hit the Power button to select "reboot system now"
Your device will reboot
You're now rooted!

Excellent Guide.
Thank you.

I love how you have proper grammar and punctuation skills. Spacing is good, fonts are bold where they need to be, this is how a guide should look!
All guides should be written like this, can u offer classes for the uneducated?

Would there be a higher demand for that than my guides? lol. But thanks a lot, I appreciate it Just trying to make it easy for everyone.

Wow. A guide that is easy to follow, in plain and understandable English, and thorough!
Thanks a lot! I'll be following this when I get my Tab this week.

perfect instructions! Thanks!

just rooted this way. It was the easiest root I have ever done!
I have rooted two different androids and the rooted process took really long on my other phones. This took me the same amount of time as your video.
Very good guide.

1,000,000 points for not hosting your files on one of the uber-annoying file hosting sites. I used your video to root my EVO phone as well, have been waiting for your guide for the 10.1. great job....

All done, started after posting my thanks and now I am all rooted..(sp?) Just need an Easy Button boot screen after the root.

Perfect guide

Does this work with 16GB WIFI UEKME 3.1 tab?

Thanks for the detail root instruction, it is very clear easy to understand (I have clicked the thank button).
Question: Just want to confirm whether this root method only applied to wifi only tab or applied to all wifi and 3G tab and with different version.

Unfortunately this is just for the Wifi only version. I could probably make a written guide for the others, but I don't have the devices to support that. Sorry dude.

Boot loop and no recovery mode ability
Sorry in advance for the long thread.
Great documentation. I hope you can help me. I posted the below at the stickied root thread but I haven't received any responses. It seems I blew away recovery mode. My tablet consistently boot loops. I have the option to choose recovery but when selected the screen goes blank for several seconds then reboots. I can get into download mode but my PC doesn't recognize the hardware and will not install the proper Samsung drivers. After reading your thread I'm wondering if this is because I didn't set debugging mode properly.
"Hi all I need some help. Verizon LTE 10.1 tab is boot looping after attempting bone head maneuver. Attempted root per Lorddeff07's method. Installed recovery file, system rebooted. Installed kernel file, system rebooted. Installed clockwork mod premium from market. Installed clockwork mod recovery for galaxy tab. Initiated backup via cwm, system rebooted and started boot looping. I can get into downloading mode but when I try to access recovery mode the tablet starts to boot loop.
I tried odin but the USB drivers are not installing properly. If I force the driver to install as Samsung ADB the tablet will display "start odin" when in downloading mode. However the odin app does not recognize the tablet. I'm running W7 pro Sp1 x64.
I also tried to use nvflash per shep211's tutorial but that didn't work. I get to section 2 step 17 when the command fails and the tablet will disconnect from the PC.
I know there has to be a way to fix my fUP. can anyone asist?"
FIXED: Removed the Verizon SIM card. Booted into download mode. Manually added the unrecognized driver as Samsung Mobile USB Serial Port. Opened odin flashed the ltecwm.tar.md5 file. Rebooted. All is good. Rebooted into recovery and installed root using Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip. Everything is up and running.

Thank you so much nice eay guide just rooted my tab thanks to you!!1 I pass you a beer sir

Glad you got it fixed! Did you use the Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip in my pack or from the LTE section in lord's thread?

I used the Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip that you provided.

Legend Won't Boot to Recovery

Hey guys,
I'm trying to boot into recovery mode on my Legend, but I've had no success as of now. I've tried using Rom Manager to boot to recovery and I've tried backing up my current Rom as well, but all I get is a phone with a red exclamation mark beside it. I've tried booting into fastboot, (Holding down the volume down button and power button) and hit the "Recovery" button, but still no luck. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.
PS: Sorry for posting two threads in two days.
EDIT: Solved. For those having a similar problem, all I had to do was run the recovery once from my PC using the file "Recovery-windows" in the Legend tools. It had to push the recovery files into my Legend again because I factory reset it a couple weeks ago. I've been trying to fix it for hours, love getting to the bottom of things.
This also works:
When you get to the red triangle of doom press volume up and power. Then using the volume buttons to navigate and the power button to select choose "install update.zip" (something like that, I honestly can't remember what of actually says) then observe as your phone ends up in recovery.

Hi,
I am new to HTC legend. I have a similar problem, can you please tell me what uyou refer to by "run the recovery once from my PC using the file "Recovery-windows" in the Legend tools." What program is that and how do I get it?
Thanks in advance.
Collectric: have you tried holding the volume up button and then pressing the power button?
For me it takes a few moments of pressing power but then a green box appears and i can move on.
Sent from my Legend using XDA App
Of course I pressed power and volume down, that's basic.
Unfortunately, I made a stupid mistake and tried to replace the recovery file using
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
which was prepare for Samsung phone (having the naive thought that Android is the same Android for every one ).
Since then I lost the possibility to go into recovery mode, and the author of the above mentioned program is not answering me, so now I am tryoing to look for a way to "recover" recovery mode ....
Thanks anyhow...
Well when I rooted my phone with theunlockr.com they gave us a legend tools folder and it has the recovery tools to push the recovery files into the phone which worked for me and I can then go into recovery freely I'll give you the link soon.
Sent from my Legend using Tapatalk
EDIT: Okay here it is http://theunlockr.com/2010/06/07/how-to-root-the-htc-legend/ make sure you download ONLY the "Legend Rooting Tools" and ONLY that you don't need anything else. Unzip the Legend Root Folder in the root of C:/ Also please do not follow the steps they mentioned as your phone is already rooted.
Here are the steps you should do:
1. Unzip the Legend Root Folder to "C:/"
2. Go to the folder in the "C:/" it should be called "R4-legend-root"
3. Put your phone in recovery mode using the power + volume down and click recovery in the PHONE not the PC.
4. When you're on the red triangle of doom (Make sure you are!) click "Recovery-windows" in the PC (Again located in the r4-legend-root folder which you unzipped)
5. A black box should come up pushing the files to your phone
6. Your phone should be in recovery mode
7. You can now go into recovery mode freely using ROM Manager instead of the computer like I do.
PS: Sorry for the late reply I was off on vacation.
Many thanks man, no need to apologize...
Well, the whole point is that strangely enough I CAN'T go into recovery mode on my phone...
Since that stupid act of trying to work with the Samsung program, when I press power and volume down I get into "Factory mode" which gives me the options to test my device, clear the flash and Reboot.
I don't even have the option to go into recovery mode...
I can try and copy all those files manually, as my phone is rooted. I will copy the files from PC into my SD then move them with my phone "total commander" into the proper folders in the root flash.
Does it sound like a plan?
Thanks again
Hi,
As you probably guessed, root is read only, so I met a dead end. I have no way to go into recovery mode thus can't replace any file in root.
I tried to reboot to recovery using "adb reboot recovery", the phone reboots and get stuck with green HTC on the screen - I had to remove battery, put back, press power with volume down to enter "Factory mode", select reboot and get again normal operation.
Any innovative idea?
Thanks in advance...
Maybe you can try to reroot your phone using the unlockr.com method. But I'm not a specialist at these kinds of issues, I wish to be more help. But is there any you can try to reroot your phone using theunlockr.com method?
Yes, I am working on it but I am not so optimistic as, on the way, they also instruct to go into recovery mode. Anyhow, till I discover something better I'll give it a shot.
Many thanks on your assistance.
As I suspected, its a vicious circle, all the repair methods eventually end in the recovery mode. To recover recovery mode I have to go into recovery mode - sad but seems to be true. I will try to open a new thread maybe there is some Android sage with some trick in the sleeve for me....
Thanks again
I'm sorry I couldn't be of help. If you do manage to get it fixed please tell me how you did it because it would be very useful to know recovery mode is essential for every phone. Thank you and sorry again.

I had a problem with the red exclamation mark when trying to load the recovery image on my phone after rooting with the method on theunlockr.com.
To solve it download a recovery image from here, rename it "update.zip" and placed it in the root of your sdcard.
Then boot up your phone and attempt to load recovery as before by pressing the power button and volume DOWN. When you get to the red exclamation mark screen, press and hold volume UP and the power button. This should bring up the Android system recovery. Select flash update.zip and this will flash and load the recovery image.
See here.

Hey, I've been doing this for few months now every time I need to enter recovery after I recovered from a bootloop for installing CM7.
However, is there a way to permanently remove this 'wrong' feature by having to manually click update.zip every time? Can I just restore my Legend back to the original state where it would automatically enter recovery without having to press "Vol Up + Power Button" combo and applying update.zip?
Thanks!

If you look at the top line of the bootloader screen it will have the phrase
'S-ON' somewhere; this means 'security on'. The result is that the /system and /recovery partitions are read-only.
There are instructions here on how to S-OFF the Legend. (xda discussion thread here)
I haven't done it myself. Personally, I felt that the risks of bricking and the time spent researching and doing it outweighed the benefits of a writeable /system and /recovery partition.

So are you saying that this "extra step" resulted from the fact that my phone is still S-ON? If that is so, I guess the benefits of this read-only system allows me to flash ROMs much easier (without having to connect to ADB).
Thanks!
I'm not sure if this is gonna help, but you can try pressing the "BACK" button while pressing power on?

can't use ROM Manager to recovery too. WiFi can't connect and when it appear allow a superuser. a program become idle and didn't do anything
Sounds like a bad flash. I'd reflash modded stock v2, then boot to recovery and wipe user data/cache/dalvik and then reflash the full 8.1 ROM. This should make sure you have a working CWM and probably fix your wifi issue too.

NO! If you are using VC 3.2 you should avoid using the ROM manager provided recovery as it is for the wrong tablet (g tablet i think) and it WILL soft-brick your Vega.
I've soft bricked my vega using this exact method!
How do I unbrick please?

When you say "soft bricked", what exactly does the tab do when you turn it on??
Best way to recover is to power down tab, attach tab to computer with usb cable. Make sure tab is charged, or plugged in at the time. hold down the back button (top of tab, next to power button), then press and hold the power button for 2 seconds, then release it while you continue to hold the back button another 2 seconds, then release back button. Your screen should flash once quickly, then stay off.
Now, if everything worked, click on the Mod Stock icon on your computer. and after a little time it will start writing files to the tab. If it says device cant be found, you are not in recovery mode, try again the power/back button instructions, it may take a few times before you get tab into recovery.
There are more precise booting into recovery instructions if needed, just Google "rooting Advent tablet"
I'm assuming you already have the usb drivers, and the roms on your computer, and know how to use them.

Galaxy Tab 8.9 Root

Please find bellow an easy way to root the new Galaxy Tab 8.9:
1. Download and install the USB drivers from here:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/GT-P7310MAAXAR
2. Transfer the attached file root.zip to the galaxy tab 8.9, this can be done in different way as follow:
* If you send an email to an actual email account on your galaxy tab with the attached file, just open the email on your galaxy tab 8.9 and saved the attached file under the SDCARD
* Using Samsung Kies tranfer the attached file to the Galaxy tab 8.9 under SDCARD
* Or the last way to do it using ADB as follow: adb push root.zip /sdcard/root.zip
3. Turn off the Galaxy Tab 8.9
4. Turn on holding Volume Down button (right side one) + power button for 15 sec, until two icons show up on the scree
5. Release buttons and press once Volume Down button (right side one) to select "Recovery Mode" is the little box icon
6. Now Select "Recovery Mode" pressing once Volume Up button (left side one)
7. Wait until "Recovery Mode" screen show up
8. Use Vol down or Vol up to select apply .zip from sdcard and press power button to select the option
9. Look for the file root.zip under the SDCARD and select it with power button
10. Apply root.zip
11. and then Reboot
12. Install SuperUSer from the market and DONE!
Awesome, thanks. I'll have to try this when I get home.
Is it really that easy? I thought the 10.1 instructions were much more complicated (ie: having to burn a new bootloader with odin, etc.

I've got Netflix working on mine with version 1.3.0 build 246, copied over from the APK I had installed from my Xoom. File name is com.netflix.mediaclient_246.apk, and looks to be a user-edited version from a few months ago. Found it somewhere on XDA, probably in the Xoom forums.
Still waiting for a real release, though. HD streaming is lacking.
Does this root applicable to 8.9" 3G ?
I get this message when attempting to install the update:
E:Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip
(Status 6)
I downloaded that file (com.netflix.mediaclient_246.apk), but it's the same file as two others I tried before:
e944b8450ef401177f851705c672dbde com.netflix.mediaclient.1.3.apk

The other two (...-1 and ....1.3) didn't work. I'll try the ..._246 version just to see if that somehow makes a difference, but I doubt it.
How were you able to get Netflix running on yours? Do you have the standard US 8.9 Wifi tablet? Did you have to install/uninstall anything else or do any tweaks to get it loaded?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, since you're the first person to say they have gotten Netflix running.
Thanks!

Turn the device off. Then, hold down the power and volume down button at the same time until the little android symbol comes up on the screen, then release both buttons. Use the volume key to select the recovery mode option.
This is built into the bios of the device, so I doubt it's something wrong with yours. Most likely you are missing something.
fyi the volume up and down buttons are backwards... well to me at least .....
power is on the top left and the left volume rocker is vol down...
also i downloaded the file and i get the same error about error 6 and it mentiones package.zip...
weird
never could get it to work, but I used the 10.1 method and worked just fine

Interesting. Looks almost identical to the method in this post except for:
1) The 10.1 method has you use adb to initiate the recovery mode.
2) The 10.1 ZIP file has two minor differences:
a) The script has a shout out that gets displayed.
b) It includes the superuser app apk
Outside of the file differences, both being irrelevant for the actual 'rooting', I don't see anything of consequence that would make one work but not the other. I'll have to try it when I get home though since I forgot my GT.
I wasn't able to get into recovery mode using "ADB Reboot Recovery" directly, it would just power down my tablet
This works for me:
-hold it in landscape mode with power button at upper left
-push and hold the power button for a few seconds, let go...
-As soon as you see the Galaxy Tablet 10.1 wording on the screen, press and hold the left half of the volume rocker button. As long as you do this before you get to the "SAMSUNG" word screen you should soon see the "Android with envelope" and "Android downloading" icons.
-Hit that left volume rocker to select the "Android with envelope" icon, then hit the right volume rocker (which acts as an 'enter' key)... Now you should be in the Recovery Mode boot screen.
-Once you get into the Recovery Boot Screen, the volume rockers act as error up and down... the Power key is the 'enter' key. Apply the update from SDCard, and reboot.
Took a few tries, but eventually got it.
I used the following file (won't let me post links, sorry)
h t t p : / / l t s .c r / b q f
Worked like a champ!

How were you able to get Netflix running on yours? Do you have the standard US 8.9 Wifi tablet? Did you have to install/uninstall anything else or do any tweaks to get it loaded?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, since you're the first person to say they have gotten Netflix running.
Thanks!

[GUIDE] How to rollback from ICS leak.

How to rollback from ICS leak
***THIS WILL WIPE YOUR DATA***
What you need:
EUU from Timmydean of 3.2.1 V4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307539
Your CPUID
Your CPUID was probably changed when you flashed the ICS leak.
How you can find it in the ICS leak
Download and install a terminal emulator from the market and enter in the following.
dmesg > /mnt/sdcard/dmesg.txt
Copy that file to your computer and open it or open it in a text editor on your A500
Look for androidboot.serialno= and the number is listed is your CPUID.
***DO NOT PLUG TABLET INTO COMPUTER UNTIL STEP ******
1. Download and extract root-3.2.1-V4
2. Run PBJ20upgrade.exe (right click and run as administrator).
3. Click Ok on Make sure your ICONIA TAB is not connected to a computer. If a "New Hardware Wizard" window appears, click "Cancel".
4. Click Next
5. Let it install the USB drivers
6. Click Next on Go to Settings/Applications/Development to enable "USB debugging" (see the picture)
7. It will try and scan for the current image version and new image version, this will take about 5 minutes.
8.
Follow the steps to get your A500 into APX mode.
1. Turn off the ICONIA TAB by long pressing the power button for 5 seconds.
2. Use a paperclip to push the reset button, don't release it.
3. Press the power button for 3 seconds.
4. Release the power button
5. Wait for 1 sec and take out the paperclip.
6. Use the USB cable to connect ICONIA TAB and PC
7. Click Yes
THIS WILL WIPE YOUR DATA.
8. Type in your CPUID, click next.
This will reset your tablet to a Rooted 3.2.1. Once it boots up you can install Acer Recovery installer from the market and install CWM recovery and restore your ROM or flash a new one.
Thanks for writing this up.
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
Thanks, i did this last night. There is another way with CWM directly installed, so you can do a CWM nand restore immediately after the process. I'll post that later today. Currently at the swimmingpool for my son's swimming lessons.

this should work on a501 too right? coz i dont see any androidboot.serialno in my dmesg.txt
edit :- it works. dmesg > /mnt/sdcard/dmesg.txt has to be issued in terminal within few seconds after we reboot the system.
THANKS!

no i removed the 0x before pasting it and if i enter it a 2nd time it accepts it but progress bar looks and stays like this forever

never moves passed that also the tab wont enter recovery says the recovery.img is incorrect or something to that effect.
Dunno why but it says please download the newer image for the upgrade... then just an exit button... does nothin?
EDIT: Never mind... I re-read the post... but I accidentally pulled the USB while it was 'upgrading' is that a problem as now it doesn't work any more?
EDIT2: Oh thank god! It tells you when it works because it says enter Acer Download Mode in the top left in small writing. Seems pretty fool-proof and robust to me, thank you JazzyJames.
EDIT3: Oh crap it failed again... now it wants me to restart it.. :'(
EDIT4: All good 3.2 booted! Thanks again.
(I put all this up for the people like me so they don't have multiple heart attacks either.)
Worked perfectly first try. Thank you!

That's more like your PC not recognizing your tablet in apx mode then. Make sure the driver is installed. If you go to device manager you will be able to check if the driver is installed or not.
i must be screwing up something simple, because when i try and get into apx mode the tablet vibrates, shows the black acer screen and instantly shuts down. i can power on just fine without holding reset but cant figure out apx mode.
a couple times i managed to get it to boot into the lock screen, says "Charging, 0%" with my wifi connecting but no screen response. works fine after a 5-second power button shut off and rebooting. cant figure out apx mode at all for some reason.

The best way to know if your in APX mode is when the screen is off and your power button is white. You don't need to be EXACT on the times of holding down power and reset, the main thing is.
Hold Reset atleast 3 seconds
Continue to hold reset and add power button.
Release power after about 3 seconds.
Then release reset, screen will be blank and power button is white, I myself noticed it works best if the tablet is not fully charged and not plugged into charge.

You should have posted a freaking warning that this deleted EVERYTHING off of our tablets. I lost pictures of my daughter that I'll never get back because of this method and there was no warning what so ever. Generally wiping data means wiping data, not /mnt/sdcard.
Just a question before jumping on this: I have installed the leaked stock 4.0.3, so I lost everything with regards to rooting. Also I can not use Busybox, SuperUser, CWM et all on my Iconia.
With this method I can fallback to 3.2.1 even though I have the stock leaked 4.0.3 installed?
Also the CPUID is not the original one from before flashing the stock 4.0.3, but the CPUID I got from flashing with 4.0.3. Is this a problem?

What have we learned?
Back-up files that are important to you.
Take the time to learn about what these tools do before using them.
That being said, the OP should include that ALL data on the tablet will be wiped.
PS: /mnt/sdcard is actually in the data partition (/data/media). Custom recoveries skip over the /media directory when doing a data wipe, by default.
Hit quote instead of edit. My apologies.

How to Root Galaxy SII SCH-R760 Generic CDMA (NON US CELLULAR)

MAKE SURE USB DEBUGGING IS ENABLED! go to [settings]-[applications]-[development] and usb debugging, check the box. Thanks to side_road for pointing this step out!!!
Droidroidz, for the sake of simplicity, i reuploaded your kernel to my min.us account, so that all the download links look the same (except for the samsung usb drivers). Thanks everyone for all the help. Especially sickin. this is essentially the guide he made for FB14 many moons ago.
As usual, by following this guide you agree that you are an adult acting on your own free will with the understanding that any modification of software on your smartphone could potentially cause irreparable damage including but not limited to: soft brick, hard brick, universe imploding, etc, etc. and that you will not hold me liable for any and all damages or undesireable consequences of following this guide. That being said, this is pretty harmless and difficult to mess up.
So, without further ado...
1. Download droidroidz’s kernel located HERE
2. Download Odin located HERE and extract to your desktop.
3. Depending on your phone, download FF18 stock kernel located HERE or FF24 stock kernel HERE
4. Power off phone, make sure it is completely off.
5. Press and hold power + volume down, (PRESS THE VOLUME DOWN BUTTON FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN PUSH AND HOLD THE POWER BUTTON) release when the odin screen comes up
6. Press volume up to accept their conditions or whatever they want.
7. Open odin, click on the “PDA” button, and select the droidroidz-v0.2.tar.md5
8. Connect your phone to your computer.
9. Make sure that odin shows a yellow com # in the ID:COM box on the left. If it doesn’t, you need to install drivers for your phone. These can be found HERE. (bottom of page, Manuals & Downloads tab, under Software, it’s the USB driver. 25.31MB in size)
10. Click start, this will flash the kernel to your phone.
11. Once it is finished, it will automatically reboot. Disconnect your USB cable
12. After it finishes booting, open the market and search for superuser. There should be a listing that needs to update. Install the update.
13. Search again for busybox installer. Download and install that app
14. Open the busybox installer app, close or ignore all the popups and crap. We just want to hit that button that says install busybox, all the drop boxes and options are set by default and do not need changing.
15. Once it has completed, power off your phone again.
16. Press and hold power + volume down again, release when the odin screen comes up
17. Press volume up to accept
18. Open odin, and this time under PDA, browse to SCH-R760_STOCK_KERNEL.tar
19. Reconnect your USB cable, make sure that odin sees your phone again (the yellow COM port on the left)
20. Click start, this will flash the stock kernel back.
21. Once it is finished, the phone will reboot.
22. After it finishes booting, you should be golden, but to confirm you can go to the market and search for an app called root checker, this will test and make sure you have root.
23. Congratulations, was that so hard?!
I did not write this, just sharing the info. Thanks to Bru_1 for these instructions and a HUGE THANKS to mcdader for the FF24 Kernel.
thanks for posting this for everyone.
I have an Alltel S2, and since you say this is for generic CDMA non US cellular. I can safely assume my phone falls under that category. I just have a few questions. I imagine the answers are very simple, but I want to make sure before I do anything.
1. Where did you find the stock kernel? I found one for Alltel, but I am unsure if it is the right one. Will the kernel that you have posted work on my phone? I read another thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31653888#post31653888 I looked, and the kernel that was there is the same one as in my phone. So, I guess that means I can use the stock kernel that you have provided. Am I correct in that assumption?
2. "5. Press and hold power + volume down, (PRESS THE VOLUME DOWN BUTTON FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN PUSH AND HOLD THE POWER BUTTON) release when the odin screen comes up" Is the phone already plugged into the computer at this point?
3. I keep reading about some sort of triangle. Does this method get rid of that triangle?
Thank you for your help.

1. FF24 will work for your phone The stock kernel in the link you posted is the same as in step 3. (there are 2 listed, FF18 and FF24, my phone has FF24) FF18 is generally the U.S. Cellular version and FF24 is the "generic" version. I got the Stock ROM from mcdader (post #2 in this thread and the OP in the link you listed, also the link you posted is a conversation between myself and mcdader, lol). The FF24 is talking about the underlined part in the kernel (2.6.35.7-SCH-R760.XARFF24-CL1125314 [email protected] #2)
2. It will take you a few tries to get it into recovery mode, try pushing both at the same time if you can't get it to work. No the phone is not plugged into the computer until step #8
3. This method DOES NOT have the triangle. You will see it once during the rooting process but it gets removed when you flash back to the stock ROM.
Ok I thank you for your reply, and answering my questions. I will most likely try this tomorrow, and report back with how things go.

No, I have been looking for a version of CWM to install but do not know which one to use.
CWM for SCH-R760
Firstly, thanks for this excellent & clear rooting guide for this phone.
Secondly I'd like to second those asking about where to go from here - to install CWM and from there a custom ROM - for me that'll be cyanogenmod if possible...
If I understand rightly we would need to install a modified version of the "2.6.35.7-SCH-R760.XARFF24-CL1125314 [email protected] #2" kernel, that has CWM in it?
I've not had to do this on previous phone: the Desire rooted and CWM'd like a dream; my Milestone X2 was more like a nightmare and due to locked bootloader I had to use a bootstrap CWM that came in on the tail of the charging animation & so would only work when the phone was plugged into the wall and rebooted - and also it had to be reflashed every time a factory reset was done, something that became my downfall in the end...
So why can't CWM just be flashed - why does it concern the kernel?
I guess I don't understand the diff between bootloader - kernel - and the rest of the ROM...
thanks!
Jon
is this thread dead? im after a recovery aswell. i have the root access done with no problem but do i need to flash back to a different kernel through odin or what to get CWM access?
I hope it's not dead. I just don't think a lot of development happens for this version of the S2. I do think that a different kernel with CWM will have to be flashed, but that doesn't really do anything without a ROM to install. Yeah you could do backups, but you'd be backing up the custom kernel. I do know that some of the hardware drivers are stored in the kernel. So, some stuff on the phone may not work with that other kernel.
