[App Info] Voodoo OTA Root Keeper (Live in the Market and source in OP) - Epic 4G General

Just thought id share with everyone that supercurio created an app today that automatically re-roots any phone after installing an official OTA update here's the link to this project on github - http://t.co/H5K7ZAI
"supercurio: YEAH #VoodooOTARootKeeper works I just applied #EeePadTransformer 3.0.1 -> 3.2 OTA & restored root successfully!"

"supercurio: Okay I'll push the OTA RootKeeper app source here: http://t.co/H5K7ZAI"--http://twitter.com/supercurio/status/106877177114529792
"supercurio: Fortunately the new standard is Ext4 or at least Ext3 on a block device (internal sdcard partition) so it will work for a vast majority."
"supercurio: I'll publish a beta version of #Voodoo #OTARootKeeper in the next hours "

"supercurio: If you feel inspired: #OTARootKeeper needs an Icon "
"supercurio: Okay the app works quite nicely now. Lets ad an "un-root" feature. Convenient, as you can also restore root later automatically!"
"supercurio: Source for the soon-to-be released #OTARootKeeper app. Code review very welcome, especially since I re-factored it: better readability now."
"supercurio: Oops: source is here: http://t.co/H5K7ZAI open for reviews."

Nevermind.... updated op.....

so wait.. would this work from say a stock rooted froyo to an official GB? or is it only within the same version? the example listed above makes me think it would only keep root when the kernel can be kept the same..

Have you tested this?
From the source code it appears to explicitly test for /system being an ext[234] file system and relies on extended attributes, which I'm not certain rfs (and frankly, I suspect doesn't) support.
So it likely won't work on Galaxy S devices, but would on the SGSII.

it says its an app but i see no apk to download...

I think its still in the process..... he put all his work on github so someone with "mad skills" could probably port it to us if it doesn't support the epic

cool def lookin forward to seein this. this will help alot of people out

It would be mighty sweet to be able to do a 1-clicker type thing on GB. Most of us though are probably gonna need Odin due to all our forced phone "mutations," heheh.

Hmmm I wonder how this app would work if the exploit changed from stock rooted to OTA? And if he has a universal exploit then we could use his findings to make a one click root for GB if we picked through his source.....

2.1 Root

Hi all.
I noticed that the Eris 2.1 is running kernel 2.6.29-5. Can someone confirm this? I have not installed it yet and probably wont have a free second to do so until Saturday.
Also if that is the kernel version then would the Tattoo exploit work?
(p.s. It really stinks that the root status thread got closed and Acid jumped ship and I really hope everyone has not given up)

How would one go about attempting this process? just curious I would like to take a shot at it if it is within any kind of reasonable/safe reach.
@Drew, we need a file to be set to 1 or 2 (Don't remember which one). It is set to 0. Sorry!

Android 2.2.1 (FRG83D) Update

Just got an OTA update which updated the build number from FRG83 to FRG83D. It was only a 1.3MB update which has security patches and other fixes.
Has anyone else got this? Does it bring any other changes/features no matter how small?

I can answer the latter part of your post now.
Rooting is simple, download Modaco's "Visionary R14" app, open it, tap "temp root now" then wait, then when done tap "perma root now" and wait... job done.
Then you are able to install the only official current custom rom which will be modaco, there are other roms for other tablets you can use but I have not really researched this myself yet.
Plus CM 6.x followed by CM 7.x is in the works.

yes that can be removed.
We will get CM6 first I believe, there is currently one majorish stumbling block stopping CM7 from working but hopefully that won't take forever to fix.
Is this tab the same as the gtab? And can we use the gtab roms on it thanks

Thats odd, all the apps i have tried that required root work fine. Root explorer and button savior etc.
I didn't have to perform any rooting steps with mine, just installed the ROM using Paul's batch files and instructions.

Yeah....it's WAY better to release an add-on fix and make everyone try to figure out how to fix the dev's **** up than it is for the dev to just release a WORKING VERSION!!!!

Chainsdd is a busy person, and the su issues don't affect everyone. I haven't had a problem with it since 3.0.2. You should be happy that he even works on this at all instead of acting like an ungrateful twit.

Exactly, don't flame a developer for creating an awesome application that contains 1 bug in an update.
I also had the bug, I updated to 3.0.1, but the update failed, and I lost my root access. But c'mon, just download the su-update zip file, flash it, reboot and you're done.
As the developer said, it's impossible to test about 700 devices every single update. SuperUser is the most important application for rooted users if you think about it, don't flame the developer for making 1 fault.
thanks for the fix, glad to get rid of the SU binary outdated msg.

ICS Alpha 9 Build available for download

Hi guys,
I just noticed a youtube movie where he showed alpha build 9 of ICS!
He also provides a download link for that build in the description of the movie.
Mod edit: link removed
Thanks
Thanks for informing us! Though I always slightly skeptical of this kind of links. Might brick our phone.

5. boot cyanogen
6. back to recovery
