Do i have to use ODIN all the time when changing roms?

i have come from Xperia X10i. where i could flash roms in minutes with Xrecovery thx to J&Z & Trip for his wonderful roms without the need of connecting my phone to a pc.
I am a bit confused now. i have made up my mind about custom roms, Villain and Lightening. i want to try both.
I dont want to damage my SGS2 as it looks very very delicate. My questions is do i have to use ODIN all the time for changing and testing roms? or is there an easier way. The reason for this question is as:
My X10 usb port got damaged due to flashing different radios/basebands for different roms and i decided to get SGS2.

Odin is probably the easiest way to flash a rom but most custom ROMs are flashable with clockwork recovery. You first have to flash a custom kernel with odin to get clockwork though.

Depends on the rom dev, if they make the rom flashable thru cwm recovery (cognition,batista etc) or odin like litening, villain.
Honestly both are pretty simple and quick. I have all my user apps, touchwiz config backed up thru titanium backup. So it only takes 5 to 10 mts to flash a new rom and restoring apps.
And don't worry you are not going to brick a samsung phone, odin will always rescue you if you can get into download mode

I used clockwork mod all the time wigth my HD2 but i didn't like the CWM boot up screen that appeared for a few seconds is that also on the GS2 or not seen as this is a native Android phone?

It was nice 8 months experience,just Super bricked my Note while perfotming a wipe with CWM,too bad couldnt claim the warrenty.

German LRK DBT stock 4.0.4 and it was running fine no problems,just wiped it to test the Paranoid Android JB 4.1.1,which was actually the last thing it did.

I see. But you can't flash roms using stock recovery. Anyways it confirms the bug still exists.

What CWM did you use or did you wipe from stock recovery?
Does it give any sign of life?

to see if you have emmc damage.

Unfortunately doesnt boot up,just stuck on the Gt-7000 logo but the download screen works,however when try to flash with PC Odin stops at the factoryfs.img which after research discovered is a Superbrick symptom.

Hello hagba, since you cannot claim warranty have you thought of getting your device repaired via the Samsung service centre in your region?
I would suggest you to enquire about the repair cost and then make a suitable decision.

Have you tried this? it worked for many users.

I have tried the PIT procedure,but its such a long and tedious process Im not sure will be able to make viable partition for normal usage.
However will see what Samsung does on Monday.

So does this mean that Stock ROMS are still unsafe to wipe rather than how samsung claims that Stock ROM wont brick?
Did you report this to Entropy? Did you wipe after flashing Paranoid ROM successfully or did you wipe on stock. If it was after succesfully flashing the CM10 based JB ROM, it should mean that CM10 doesnt have MMC_CAP_ERASE disabled or maybe no ICS kernel is safe.
Should report to Entropy if you didnt.

He already.wrote 'wipe it to test jb' means wiped on.stock.
Entropy aleeady aware of this (i have already reported 2 case on 4.0.4). And he hav mentioned on his thread, stock ics are known unsafe kernels.

I made a mistake of wiping twice from Settings under android in Indian Stock DDLP8 stock 4.0.3 but luckily never bricked. But now I take care not to. But do you think I may have caused damage in the first two wipes? I see no issues till now but just asked.

It cause damage once in while, not every wipe/reset result to brick (good if it was like that, sammy must have find solution then)
Still if you have any doubts find 'emmc brick bug' application from market n scan ur device.

I have the affected emmc firmware VYLOOM 0x19. Its just that I turned out to be lucky. I dont believe Samsung would fix the Indian firmware (4.0.3) while the bug remains on the latest 4.0.4 ROMS. If there is a fix from Samsung, we Indians are the ones who usually get it last. But strangely, I havent heard of any superbricked Indian Notes in this forum.

I think Samsung's claim was that you won't get bricked if you stick to stock and don't root. I'm not saying that's true . Even seems unlikely since I think you can factory wipe from the settings without root, IIRC (memory's rusty, haven't been on a stock ROM for ages).
There were some bricks with CM10, but only from people who flashed from stock ICS or stock ICS based ROMs. Flashing from the safe ICS kernels seems to still be safe.

Maybe that's because Indians are careful enough to read the instructions before risking their device? I doubt it's because Indian Notes have had some special pixie dust sprinkled over them while they passed customs.

If you dont mod your device then how many chances are.there to make hard reset device?
I know lot ppl they purchasing and selling.device without single reset.
So rooting opens.100 ways to explore ur device, simultaneously opens 100 ways to put u in situation,u needs reset. That is the only reason rate.of bricking is high with rooted device, but if you read carefully and avoid reset/wiping there is almost zero chances to brick.
And yes if you look, compare to selling of notes in india, u don't see indians are quite less on forum?

I'm really worried because you said if I avoid wiping I'm almost zero chance of briking.. I got my note clean, I mean I don't dare to put music and movies into it because then I don't dare to delete all those files... Will this brick my phone? I'm stock 4.0.4 rooted

Obviously the culprit is wiping with CWM,I have factory Reset million times with no consequences at all,and just once with CWM was enough to Superbrick it,and yes I was on stock ROM.

It says big files shudn't be deleted. Though frankly speaking i have not seen any case brick by that, though we cant ignore comments from recognised developer.
But wat best idea i found to manage file is
Connect device with PC as mass storage and manage files from PC explorer. I believe that is safe way.

[Q] Google play edition dump will work on this phone?

I know that the att galaxy s4 has the same exact hardware as the Google play galaxy s4, so if someone dumped that phone, bootloader and all, and flashed it to att model, would it unlock the bootloader and would it run that rom alright? I kind-of want to have the updates not directly from att so I could get stuff like the app2sd quicker.

Locked boot loader is in the hardware, no matter what you flash, it won't change that. Having said that, there are several roms floating around, give one a try as they still work on our devices, I would not trust a raw dump as that might have a different boatloader that will screw the phone ge

Then stay stock. If you're going to flash a rom you have to do wipes most of the time. If you don't you'll end up with lots of problems that will force you to start all over. Just make a nandroid backup in your recovery before flashing and you'll be able to get right back to where you started if you have a problem.

Hi everybody, I just have a few questions before I root my phone.
First of all, I am new to android having just come from the iPhone, but having said that I do not view myself as computer illiterate and am confident in the ability to be able to root my phone. But before I do so, I just have a few questions:
How high is the potential of risk when rooting my device?
Is there anything important I should consider or do before attempting to root my device?
What are the main advantages in rooting your phone?
Can I revert the root and restore it to a point where it no longer voids my warranty? And on a similar note, if I flash a custom ROM am I able to go back to touchwiz?
and finally, can anyone please provide me with an easy, updated guide on how to root my device?
I currently have the GT-I9505 model and it is locked to Virgin in Australia.

The risk of something going wrong when rooting your phone is very small, as long as you follow the right instructions for the right device! I don't know what you should use for a virgin locked i9505 though..
You have to know that your data (games/apps with its data, not your internal SD or external sd) will be wiped after flashing a new rom, not necessarily while rooting! When flashing a new rom, your system settings will be wiped, your call logs and text messages will be wiped, but not your contacts as they are stored on your google account and restored after flashing a new rom!
The main advantages of rooting is the ability to do things Samsung doesn't 'want' you to do. This can be small things like themeing, but also things like flashing a custom recovery, which is needed for flashing a new ROM. Another useful feature is foldermount, with which you can move appdata to your external SD.

That is one of the problems I face, everywhere I look I seem to be getting guides on Verizon/AT&T Galaxy's and I have never even heard of those companies until I joined this forum Perhaps I will take a look at the Australian thread on the Galaxy and see if there is anything special needed to root/flash my device.
As rooting allows me to transfer data to my SD card, will it still be wiped when I flash a new ROM? Or is it only whole apps that can be transferred to an SD card?
Also funnily enough, I was just looking at that guide on YouTube

No, I'm sorry all data on your SD will be kept, but savefiles will be wiped. You will have to use Titanium Backup to backup your savefiles/apps.

Ah I think I get it now, could I just use titanium backup to restore SMS/data on my phone after flashing? Also, is there any ROMS you recommend?

Just be careful restoring Data.. This can cause problems in some roms...
As for what rom, the best idea is to read the description, see if it fits your need and try it out. I personally like Omega 7 at the moment but can't say it will stay forever....

If your phone is an i9505 you'll be fine using any root method for i9505.
I would suggest flashing CF Root using Odin, it's simple, quick and easy.
Restoring your phone back to stock is as simple as resetting flash counter with triangle away then downloading your carriers firmware from sammobile and flashing with Odin.

what problems may arise from restoring after flashing? I don't mind losing some data just an inconvenience really. Omega seems good, might give it a try

Alright thanks for that clarification i am learning towards the CF Root and using TWRP as custom recovery.
Would you by any chance know if Virgin locked devices are the same as optus on sammobile?

Any firmware for the i9505 will work but if you want official Virgin firmware then no Optus will be different. It will run fine but you'll have Optus apps installed and things like that. I'd go for the Australia XSA firmware, it's unbranded
I would advise against TWRP. PhilZ CWM recovery is by far the best, easiest and totally bug free
And the best advice anyone can give you is to perform regular nandroid backups using CWM.

In that case I may root my phone tonight the reason I picked the optus one is because when I got the phone it came loaded with optus apps, and Virgin uses optus towers, so I'm thinking maybe they merged? In that case would the official Virgin software be the optus one? Either way the unbranded one is probably the best

So yeah Iv'e been root-phobic ever since I bricked my old Ace Plus back in the day, and Iv'e been satisfied with non-root for a while.
But now the advantages of root are tempting me to go back. Iv'e always hated the fact that you can't disable the camera sound and the bloatware takes necessary space, and let's not forget all the apps that have special root features.
The thing is I'm ready to root again but then I realized rooting would change my phones status to "modified," and I won't be able to update my firmware. And that's a no-no since I'm expecting to ( hopefully ) get 4.3 soon.
So my question is: If I root, remove all the c**p I want to ( camera sound, bloatware ), and then unroot, will my phone status still be modified or will the unoot send it back to normal, so I can update? I hope it does! :fingers-crossed:

I think once you root your phone it will stay modified forever, but still, having a rooted S3 is so much better, i have 4.4.1 with CM and its something that I think will never come to our S3, so..
I rooted mine two weeks before I bought it, ****ed it up and fixed it many times...
The choice is yours to make ​

Yes you can go back to official status even after rooting and flashing custom roms multiple times.
This can be done by resetting the flash counter via Triangle Away and flashing a stock Rom.
Check your Build version and CSC now by dialing *#1234#
Better yet download from Samfirmware your current firmware in case you want to go back to it later.

Also it's a good practice to backup your EFS, if you're still on efs v1, and keep it in a safe place like your ext sd card or your PC before flashing another Rom or firmware.
