[webOS] The HP Touchpad Guide (to homebrew/overclocking) [Mac/Windows/Linux] - TouchPad Development

Thanks to all of you that have hit thanks on my posts. You make me look good
As many of you know, there is a way to install Preware which is not unlike Cydia on the iPad. WebOS has a great homebrew community that is supported by HP. Perks include Overclocking to 1.5+Ghz, free homebrew apps, and many great tweaks. Try it out by following the directions below.
If your TouchPad isn't seen by the PC your using, download and install the WebOS SDK here.
-Download WebOS Quick install to your computer HERE
-Put your Touchpad into development mode by:
Launching Device Info and tap its top-left menu.
Selecting "Custom Application..." and typing in: ##3386633#
In the application, move the Developer Mode slider to the On position.
Tap Reset the Device.
When reset is complete, Developer mode is enabled.
IMPORTANT : DONT MAKE A PASSWORD ON DEVELOPMENT MODE OR YOU'LL HAVE TO WIPE YOUR ENTIRE PAD.
-Plug in your pad and tap charge only on the prompt (in the corner).
-Now go to quick install on your computer, launch it (you may have to update Java)
-Hit the little globe button, and wait for things to load.
-Scroll down to Preware and install it. (Your device might reboot after installation.)
-You can now install things from preware, like Uberkernel that overclocks the processor to 1.5ghz (under Kernels)
Note : to Oc, you must download the app govnah from preware.
This was done on my MacBook pro, should work with windows or anything really, as long as Java works.
To sideloade apps, install Internalz pro and you can install .ipk files, which are the same as .apk and .ipa files for android and ios.
For more info until this community grows, go to Precentral, its like XDA for webOS. Tons of good people over there. Thanks to Rootzwiki and Precentral for helping me out too.
Feel free to hit the Thanks button if I helped!

NOTE
See POST 16 by Nburnes for a more detailed guide if this isn't enough.

Links etc will be added.

After installing Preware download and install Internalz Pro. Internalz is a file explorer that will install .ipk files. Just put the Amazon app on your internal storage and install.

Aye ipk is available here for anyone who wants the kindle beta

The most important thing to know about installing PreWare is that when you put your phone into development mode NEVER CREATE A PASSWORD. Leave it blank, keep it blank. If you create a password you won't be able to install anything, you'll have to erase your device and start from scratch. Found this by luck on a forum post over at PreCentral - it doesn't seem to be in any of the FAQ posts around the web.

That uberkernel has me interested. How much of a noticeable performance change does it offer? Is it stable? How much of a battery life decrease can you expect? How much of a concern is overheating?

Thank you.

Precentral.net has a lot of info and more specifics.

Uberkernel is stable. Battery life is unaffected to me, still get over a day which is all that matters.
No lag Like I used to have. Now if we had enough apps in the market or whatever to fill up a page, I'd be happy.

Thanks for the info mate, gonna grab my copy tomorrow morning

My question about Uberkernel is what rev of Linux Kernel is it... and in theory, wouldn't this have the drivers necessary to make Android happy on this device (assuming the 2.6.x rev is similar to what 2.3.3's running)?

Why would you need to side load Kindle, the link to the app store for kindle came on my touchpad... it's in the app catalog for free...
Now, loading ipks from internal storage... darn handy. Thanks!

The HP Touchpad Guide
Well uh yea, since multiple persons have asked me for it, I decided to try my hand at this little guide writing thing. I do apologize for it looking bland. All this information is on the web. I have simply brought it together here for users of this forum. Please do read it all.
Note that this guide deals with only one manner of installing Preware onto your device. For more information, please take a look at the source links.
Important Terms
webOS – Proprietary mobile operating system running on the Linux Kernel, originally built by Palm, acquired in 2010 by HP. It is closed source with certain aspects open source under GPL.
Homebrew – Packages built by a dev or simple user for another end user. These include things such as simple to complex games, patches, tweaks, kernels, etc. These are neither directly supported nor officially condoned by HP. Some homebrew can void the warranty.
Preware – Basically the Cydia of WebOS. It allows for installing of homebrew applications, themes, patches and over 1600 Linux programs.
Kernel – Main componenet of most computer operating systems. It is the bridge between applications and actual data processiong done at the hardware level.
Luna – Basically this is what is “logged” into the device, such as springboard on iOS. It is the devices App Controller.
Palm webOS SDK – Exactly as it sounds, the SDK for webOS.
WebOS Quick Install – Program that allows for use of webOS applications that are in-testing. These are under agreement that allows for unapproved applications to be installed on Palm/HP devices. These have not been tested by Palm/HP and are installed at own risk.
WebOS Doctor – Borked your device? This tool from HP/Palm will hopefully restore it to a usable state.
Novaterm/Novacom – Allows for Windows/OSX to talk to the Linux on the webOS devices.
Feeds – Equivalint of sources on Cydia. They are the places you add if you want more tweaks, themes, kernels, applications, etc.
Gaining Developers Mode
1. Go to main screen
2. Select “Just type...” bar
3. In the bar type “webos20090606” without the quotes
4. Tap the Developer Mode icon
5. Set Developer Mode to ON
6. Don't enter a password, simply hit Submit
7. Congrats device is in developer mode for use with SDK or webOS Quick Install
webOS Quick Install
Java based program that has cross platform support. (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux)
Requires:
Java 1.6+ - Make sure you are up to date
Novacom – Will automagically be installed when your first run webOS Quick Install
DevMode Enabled
1. Download latest version here. V4.2.3 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2774158/WebOSQuickInstall-4.2.3.jar
2. Connect device in developer mode and select “Cancel” when mount as usb notification appears.
3. Run webOS Quick Install. If novacom driver isn't installed, it shall install for you.
4. Click third button on the right side (Globe icon)
5. Click on “All” box
6. Proceed to search for “Preware”
7. Click Install
8. Congrats Preware is now installed on your webOS device.
If this method creates some form of issue more information on installing Preware can be read here - http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Application:Preware
Thanks for Bigjzoo - If you use Lion go to this link to download the Novacom Drivers. You won't be able to download them through QuickInstall. It will fail.
Now the fun parts really begin.
Preware
Newest version as of 8/22 – v1.7.3
Upon first launch, Preware will download and update all feeds. It will ask to associate .ipks with Preware, choose yes. You will then be greeted by a screen that has “Available Packages”, “Installed Packages”, “List of Everything”. These are all hopefully rather straight forward sounding.
In the top left corner where it says Preware, this drops down to allow for Preferances, updating/managing feeds, Luna manager, saving package list, etc.
Moving back to “Available Packages” you will find lists of things you can install. On my Touchpad it is the following:
1. Applications
2. Font
3. Kernel
4. Linux Application
5. Linux Daemon
6. Optware
7. Patch
8. Plugin
9. Service
10. Unknown
You can trawl through these on your time, but I have a list of current tweaks/apps/kernel I personally recommend installing or have installed on my device.
1. Govnah – Allows for overclocking. Simple as that.
2. Internalz Pro – Powerful file manger for webOS.
3. Preader Native Alpha – (This is an alpha so a little buggy) Allows for reading of ePub, eReader, MobiPocket, PalmDOC, plaintext, and HTML files.
4. Uberkernel – Stable kernel that allows for overclocking up to 1.5Ghz.
5. Add Launcher Tabs – Adds tabs to launcher that include, Games and Homebrew.
6. EOM Overlord Monitoring – Stops the process that Palm included that literally logs everything that you basically do on the device. Sorta creepy.
7. Ad Blocker – Blocks ads.
8. Advanced Reset Options – When holding power instead of just “Shutdown” gives option of “Airplane Mode”, “Luna Restart” (hot reboot), “Device Restart”, “Shutdown”.
9. Muffle System Logging – works with EOM Overlord to stop unnecessary logging of the system.
10. Unthrottle Download Manager – Does exactly as it sounds.
11. Faster Card animations – Makes opening app drawer very speedy. Applications and cards seem to open much faster, I highly recommend.
12. Touchplayer - Plays pretty much every video file format.
List of Packages that users may be interested in
1. Increase Touch Sensitivity and smoothness – Pretty self-explanatory.
2. Just Charge by defaulty – Instead of prompting to mount as USB when connected to PC, it will “Just charge”.
3. Remove Tap Ripple – Removes the tap ripple effect. (I personally love the ripple <3)
Overclocking
Requires:
An overclocked kernel installed
Govnah to be installed
Overclocking on these devices are a breeze.
1. Open Govnah
2. Click on "Profile"
3. Choose OnDemandTCL 1512 if you want a stable 1.5GHz clock
4. Go back
5. Congrats you are overclocked
More info on Govnah.
More advanced users may go under advanced settings choosing CPU freq scheduler, TCP congestion, etc.
I personally like 192 Mhz min, 1.7 GHz max, conservative govenor with the BFQ I/O scheduler.
Now for those looking into ridiculous overclocking (1.7 ghz+) or just running very Alpha/beta software, I recommend looking at how to set up your device with webOS Internals Testing Feeds.
Link here - http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Testing_Feeds#Using_Preware
Source List

4. WebOS Quick Install - http://forums.precentral.net/canuck-coding/274461-webos-quick-install-v4-1-1-a.html
5. Preware - http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Application:Preware
6. Govnah - http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Application:Govnah

HP underclocked the processor, it's supposed to be at 1.5ghz. This solved almost any lag on the device.

Um.. what's going on? I have a touchpad. First webos for me. Preware on touchpad = root/jailbreak? Dang I don't even know what I'm talking about. Is there a word for newer than noob? That's definitely what I feel like reading this thread. If someone could point me to some info on the before and after of installing Preware I'd be thankful.

I sent you a private message (pm). Do you know how to reply?
Jailbreaking and rooting and installing preware all allow unofficial programs to be installed on devices. These apps have more privliges than normal apps, and the ability to control things most apps can't (preventing virus and piracy).
For advanced users this is appealing, more productivity and customization can be had.

[Q] (newbie) POV ProTab 2 (vega?) market access

Hi, I hope I am at the right place to ask about this device.
I found a good deal on this 7" board, and saw that it shipped with the "new" Android v 2.3
However, I can't access the Android Market with it (is that obvious???). I think that without access to the largest app marketplace, I could as well return the thing. (the "replacement" market on it features zero of the apps I want/need)
I could go with a more expensive Samsung tablet where everything probably works out of the box, but I bought this for my kids to play with, so I felt I had no need for all that 3G/GPS/advanced stuff
Could you please advise me on how to obtain market access on this device, if at all possible? Most of the info I've found is on other/related tablets, with older versions of Android.
Is it possible to:
- install a compatible custom ROM (something that works on a tablet like Advent Amico, but it has newer hardware?)
- root the device and then do some magic with it?
- download some app that magically installs market?
- grab the apk's directly from market and then install them (aka "sideloading"?)
I'd really appreciate help on this!
I did a little research on "point of view pro tab 2" thru Google and came up empty (except for deal offerings).
I, personally, would avoid this tablet. On google I didn't find a single forum/board about this tablet, so atm the developing community is nonexistant, so you're getting a slim chance to ROOT your tablet and get the "Google Experience" TM --> Market, GMail, GTalk, Maps,...
If you really want a decent 7" Tablet then get an Archos A70 or its clone Prestigio PMP7070.
Archos also has 10" Tablets A101 (Prestigio PMP7100C), but Advent Vega/ViewSonic 10S/POV mobii are all Tegra 2 based (dual-core with NVIDIA technology (think GeForce GPUs)).
There are alot of similar models and brands in the tablet world and some are ROOT-able and some are not and not a single of these "cheap" tablets has the Google Experience, because that costs extra money for the manufactuers.
I would strongly recommend to check if the device is ROOT-able before you purchase it, this basically applies to any device nowadays: Routers, Phones, media players, Consoles,...
Update about the apks from the Market:
I installed the Market apk on my tablet and it didn't show some apps/games in the market. So I've installed them thru my SGS (phone) and then made a backup (Titanium Backup, Astro Filemanager, there are lots of backup apps on the market) and then transfered the apks from my phone to my PC and then from my PC to my tablet and normally installed them thru a filemanager (like Astro).
You just need to enable "Unknown sources" under Settings --> Applications and you're all done!
yani2000, thanks so much for your help.
I was hoping that the tablet was common HW, just with a obscure branding!
Btw, here's some info on the board. I was looking at the Archos, but it had less RAM and not 2.3, so I thought the POV was a better out of the box (guess I was wrong...)
Operating system Android 2.3 Gingerbread
Processor Telechips 8803 Cortex A8 - 1.0 GHz
System memory 512 MB DDR2
Storage memory 4GB NAND Flash
Display LCD 7" 800 x 480
Touchscreen Capacitive 2-point multi touch
WiFi 802.11 b/g
Hi there.
The screen res on that screen is very low even for a seven inch tab, you should be looking at 1024x600 as a min. 800x480 is the same as my 4 inch phone. Also forget gingerbread, honeycomb is what you want for a tab. Try to find a POV Mobii 10 inch. Vegacomb will install on that and its only around 250 euros.
PEACE.

i'm thinking of buying a presticio 7070c tablet, but i'm unsure if it's possible to root it, or to install any custom rom, or at least change the launcher app. that prestigio's launcher is terrible!
also i'm wondering if it's possible to install regular android market, and then, afterwards to download and install apps from it?
any help is appreciated!

Hi!
You're actually on wrong XDA forum.
To get all the nice treats visit this XDA's sub-forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=875
Gen8 (Generation 8) are the forums for you!
Generation 9 is a good 8"/10" tablet forum with HoneyComb out-of-the-box.
To get more info about ROOT click here.
And here is a guide on how to ROOT.
If you have any questions feel free to ask in that forum.
And for the butt-ugly launcher (I would be ashamed to develop such a launcher), I think you can always install a custom laucher from the market like: GO Launcher EX, LauncherPro, ADW Launcher (I just pointed out few of the most commonly used launchers).
And for the apps+market thing... when you ROOT your tablet you can copy market, maps, contacts, gmail, talk, youtube,... and some other google framework and services related apks to your system/app folder with root explorer and after reboot you'll get the google experience.
Or you can install a custom ROM and let an experienced developer handle all the details.
Well tbh, from my research its based on the ly-f tablet. i'll post a thread when i figure out more.
Also, the tablet comes pre-rooted. just install superuser.apk and rock n roll.
[HowTo] Install Android Market on Point of View ProTab 2
I had the same problem with the Point of View Mobii 7" Tablet ProTab 2 (TAB-7C-4GW-1). After a couple of hours, I found a solution. Here is what I did:
1. Update the firmware/ROM to version 2. Download from Point of View homepage (I can't provide the URL due to forum limitations , but Google "TAB-7C-4GW-1 firmware" and it should be the first hit). NOTE that following the instructions will also perform a factory reset and remove all data. (The reset in the last step means putting a needle in the tiny hole on the back)
2. Configure Wi-Fi and connect.
3. Open the YouTube app and go to My channel. This will require you to log in, so select to add account and provide your Google credentials. (Adding the Google account in the device Settings didn't work for me, at least not under firmware 1)
4. Put LauncherPro and Home Switcher on an SD card, for example by backup up some other device with MyBackup (or maybe transfer to the tab via USB?). Open ES File Explorer and install LauncherPro. Then install Home Switcher, launch Home Switcher and select to launch LauncherPro. Now on the home screen of LauncherPro there will be a Market icon. Tap it, accept the terms - and your're in!
For me this worked on two separate devices with different Google accounts.
i picked up a POV mobii tegra 2 10.1 from my local computer shop for £132. it comes with froyo 2.2 and i installed youtube app and few games on it. im shocked how good the graphics are on games like shadowrun, riptide and jelly defence.
iv did try putting viewcomb 3.2 on the device but there were a lot of bugs, games like shadowrun did not work on it then either. vegacomb doesnt work, it just ends up at the vegacomb boot video animation and goes nowhere. so i went back to stock firmware. shame really since viewcomb had very good scrolling speed but it bricked itself with a usb boot loader message.
still trying to fina a way to get the proper market working with stock firmware.

Did you try any of the custom ROMs that are based on v2.2?
Like Corvus5, Modaco ROM or a Preformance Pack that goes on top of stock firmware.
no i not tired those, although with stock firmware 2.2 everything seems to work fine for me, i dont ge thte scroll speed that honeycomb offers but the 2.2 is more stable.
however i have an issue with motion sensor games where they dont register the tilting on 2.2 firmware but work fine on honeycomb.
odd.
Hi, i get the same tablet of u (Point of View Mobii 7" Tablet ProTab 2 (TAB-7C-4GW-1)) but i get some troubles for upgrading the firmware, i cant enter in FWDN mode dunno why, i follow all steeps and nothing happens...

Webtop: Working Ubuntu programs plus small guide

Let me start off by saying I am not a developer. And Im not too familiar with Linux either. Just goes to show that this isnt too difficult
To get ubuntu on the Atrix please go here first:
[MOD] Full Linux (Debian) inside WebTop! v0.2.6 [2011/07/07] [14.15 GMT+2:00] - xda-developers
Follow the steps. Must have CMW installed, rooted etc.
I was unsuccessful with webtop2sd. You might have good results with it, but for me it didnt.
Once you flash this cmw file, reboot you phone and enter into webtop (if you need the HDMI hack, you will find that on XDA). You will now see 3 new icons. Leafpad, Lxterminal, and a penguin. Click on the penguin, and you it will say found image. Click ok.
If your unfamiluar with linux, this will look french to you. Once it launches (the first time after reboot will take some time, be patient). Hit enter, enter again and scroll down to Shells, then hit enter on Bash. Now this is where the fun begins.
Enter synaptic. If that doesnt work you might need to install it. apt-get install synaptic. After thats opened search for gnome-panel, right click and select "mark for installation". Hit apply and go for a coffee. This will take a long time, and make sure your on wifi. This is a huge download.
Here is a list of working applications so far :
Epiphany web browser
Epiphany IM
Evolution Mail
Iceweasle
AbiWord
GNU image manipulation
All of the games
Im working on getting usb-to-ethernet dongle working.I can see it, just cant get access to it.
Almost all of the pre-installed applications with gnome work. EXCEPT sound. This is driving me nuts. I am unable to find a sound driver (gstreamer) that works. If anyone here figures it out let me know. And if anyone out there have programs that work let me know. I can always add it to the list. Im very green to Linux, and just playing around at this point. Im no developer, and most of your questions can be answered on XDA forums.
I have the same setup, and you can add openoffice.org and geany packages to the "functional" list. I use openoffice's writer every day and have found no missing functions. Geany is working, but does not build and compile, so it's basically a color-coded text editor (still useful for note-taking my language classes). I did NOT use synaptic to get these. I simply used the bash script (in the same manner you described for your synaptic install) to apt-get install openoffice.org and geany respectively. Nice thread,

My sound through the Webtop is functional, yes. I'm not sure if you were talking about gnome-specific apps (I wouldn't know, because I'm not using gnome panel), but anything through mobile view or iceweasel (not including flash) plays stereo through the Webtop. I didn't do anything special to get it working, it always just has. I hope you figure out your problem.
-omni
With epiphany did you encounter a problem where it uses xulrunner-1.9.2 instead of xulrunner-1.9 and fails to start the gecko engine? The epiphany version that is available through synaptic after fixing apt-get dependencies and sources uses xul1.9 once and works right then uses xul1.9.2 every time after that and fails. Epiphany lists both xul versions as deps so i, unsuccessfully, tried to lock xul1.9 and install a fake xul1.9.2. Any help would be awesome.
I did manage to make Webtop2SD work after I created a 4 GB partition on my ExtSD through Webtop2sd partitioning tool.
Here's what I got working (installed through Synaptic):
XFCE4 (full suite)
OpenOffice
GIMP

I know it's a bit late for commenting lol. And probably my post may be off-topic. But was your issue the <no sound coming from HDTV via HDMI> one?
I also had this issue in webtop going on for like 3 months (like flashing and reflashing webtop to no end), until I stumbled upon this Motorola forum:
h**p://supportforums.motorola.com/message/330591#330591
(had to mod link because I didn't reach the minimum amounts of posts to allow links -_-)
Basically, if you switch display resolution to anything other than 1280x720, sound will not redirect to HDTV. And as for me, after switching to 1280x720, I had to reboot my Atrix in order to finally have sound . No need to find for drivers.
My sound would work within the Webtop apps from Motorola. But if I wanted to use a Linux MP3 player, watch a video etc there would be no sound. Kept getting a gstreamer error.
Hi g2tegg,
I have Atrix with iBlur ROM. I installed the WebTopMOD zip file using CWM and have the folder with linux image in sdcard-ext. But when I reboot the phone and plg it in Atrix Lapdock I don't see the icons like: penguin etc.
Could you please help.
Got it working !!

Try to reflash the webtop and then the mod again. There is a thread in the developers area I believe called webtop mod v1 or something like that. When I get the chance I will try to dig it up. Driving in a snowstorm at the moment slightly hinders my searchability haha. Good ol Ontario I tell ya
quick question: are these persistent? can I make a desktop icon for these or do I have to apt-get them everytime?
seems counter intuitive to not be able to "hard" install the applications

You dont have to apt-get everytime. The installed applications are on either the phones hard drive or the SD card. Only thing you will have to do is start the gnome panel every session, which is easy enough.

Yeah after tinkering with them for enough time I figured that out!
only question is how do I figure out where they are located on my phone? I can't find a DEBIAN folder anywhere on my device (sd or sd-ext) my webtopmod folder is on my internal storage btw
thanks for the response!
If you use webtopmod's debian chroot (the white shell) they'll be in the linuxdisk file, as it's actualy a filesystem in itself. You won't be able to 'directly' access them. I recommend switching to webtop2SD. I didnt' want to, but everything is native that way and most things run better anyways, I installed xfce4 and got rid of that stupid awn dock at the bottom and put in a little bar. Now it feels like linux!
My apps so far:
OpenOffice 3
XChat
rdesktop (doesn't work, keymap doesn't work)
gimp (not used yet)
Any other useful ones people know of? I don't need an email client... the phone's gmail app is sufficient enough, and if I need more support I'll just use gmail. Kind of wish I could get an updated firefox, or a tun/tap module so i could use hamachi.

I installed chromium, and it's running smoother than firefox ever did. Haven't really had a reason to install anything else, but i think i'm gonna get fxce4 because the current dock at the bottom annoys me

^yeah after using it exclusively for the past day or so it's quite capable but I can also see the limitations of debian through chroot. I'd ideally like to get rid of the webtop all together and just have kde or gnome (i'm not picky, xcfe4 would work for me too)
but I'm assuming if I do webtop2sd I can have ubuntu with gnome installed no problem?
I went through the process of putting all of my gnuSTEP icons on the webtop and it's very much like my current gnuSTEP machine (supremely capable btw when using a debian core) I haven't run into any real problems using the chroot method, save for not being able to put shortcuts on the AWN bar and the occasional, but when I get my lapdock in the mail and start exclusively using this when I'm out and about I'll look into doing webtop2sd. I need to get a bigger sd card too, I have a 16 but I'd rather have a 32 external only for webtop and the 10 or so internal for android I don't listen to music on my android (I own a zune) so 10 should be plenty to just have apps and android

Did you use the jaunty hack to get chromium working?
I successfully installed chromium but every page loads for a second and then crashes. I didn't really look into the chromium hack (I don't think I use jaunty for anything and synaptic/apt-get can get all the repositories I need) but it seemed intensive especially to get flash.
I've found that while firefox has FANTASTIC flash support (like, really good and speedy, no chops) I just end up using konqueror for regular internet tasks. I can't seem to get it to install flash (I don't know how to install .deb packages) but it's speedy for other things and makes an excellent file manager
If you could get chromium without 2.3.5 i'd get it... but 2.3.5 offers what appear to be no benefits at all, correct?
Just kinda scared to have to rebuild from a bricked phone.
Trolling from my ATRIX 4G's XDA premium app, still on the gold medal winner of worst customer satisfaction for the second year in a row! Congrats!
I upgraded to 2.3.5 it has the new firefox, it runs fine from what I've seen
I'm trying to install synaptic by "apt-get install synaptic", but it shows several "Failed to fetch http://ftp.debian.org/debian/......" messages.
How can I fix this?

HP Touchpad CM7 Alpha Download!!! :p

The following is a direct copy paste from somewhere else Enjoy! The wait is over for Alpha!

CyanogenMod for TouchPad
ALPHA 1
"LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS" EDITION
* READ THIS COMPLETELY *
Sweet, sweet Internet,
You waited more-or-less patiently for over a month, so at long last, here it is-- an alpha version of CyanogenMod 7.1.0 (an enhanced version of Google's Android 2.3) for the TouchPad.
Understand, this version is definitely an alpha, with all that implies. Those expecting perfection will be sorely disappointed. Many things won't work as well as they will eventually. But you wanted it ASAP, and hopefully, this version should be somewhat useable and gives a sense of progress.
With that said, let's answer some questions, FAQ style.
WHAT KIND OF WARRANTY DOES THIS SOFTWARE COME WITH, IF ANY?
THIS SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED BY THE PROJECT AND CONTRIBUTORS ``AS IS'' AND ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE ARE DISCLAIMED. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE PROJECT OR CONTRIBUTORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, PROCUREMENT OF SUBSTITUTE GOODS OR SERVICES; LOSS OF USE, DATA, OR PROFITS; OR BUSINESS INTERRUPTION) HOWEVER CAUSED AND ON ANY THEORY OF LIABILITY, WHETHER IN CONTRACT, STRICT LIABILITY, OR TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE OR OTHERWISE) ARISING IN ANY WAY OUT OF THE USE OF THIS SOFTWARE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGE.
Got it? Good.
WHAT IS CYANOGENMOD FOR TOUCHPAD?
CyanogenMod is a community-developed and supported Android distribution for over 60 tablets and phones. This ported version is for the recently discontinued HP TouchPad tablet.
In truth, this "alpha" version is not intended for the general public. Rather, those technically competent hobbyists and developers who are interested in testing an early development version and fully understand the risks of doing so may find interest in it. But there are many bugs and problems in this alpha version. There will be MANY app compatibility issues as well.
WHAT IS THE "ALPHA 1" VERSION AND HOW DO I INSTALL IT?
*** This early version represents the start of a process, not the end, and as such will not be sufficiently awesome, so take any expectations you have and lower them. Now lower them about five feet below that. ***
To be clear, you are encouraged NOT to install this software, as the alpha is only a test version and as stated above, there is no claim that it is fit for any purpose. You may experience issues ranging from the benign to the very serious, including potential data leakage, and/or permanent loss of data, and even the possible "bricking" or permanent disabling of your device. Or worse. It can't be emphasized enough how risky its use may be. Try it entirely at your own risk and with full understanding of the potential for problems and acceptance of any consequences that may result.
That said, if you do understand, acknowlege, and accept these risks and still want to continue, there are installation instructions (and additional exciting caveats and warnings) bundled with ACME Installer.
DOES INSTALLING CYANOGENMOD VOID MY WARRANTY WITH HP?
While HP has expressed moral support for the project ("For those of you in the development community actively working to port Android to the Touchpad, we applaud your efforts"), other HP representatives have also stated that "anyone who loads Android on their Touchpad voids their warranty."
Therefore, it may be prudent to assume that installing (or attempting to install) Android or any other OS besides the stock WebOS would result in the voiding of your manufacturer's warranty. Generally speaking, you must assume any and all risk when experimenting with this software.
SO WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN'T WORK?
Most hardware features of the Tablet should now be supported, although not 100%. There may be issues with sound, camera, wifi, etc. As stated previously, it is definitely an alpha build.
Here is a helpful list of features that are near-completion. Thanks to DarkRedFlame for compiling this.
* Booting into Android
* ADB commands via ADB
* Power, back/home and volume button layout
* Touchscreen support (Multi-touch, 10 fingers)
* GPU Acceleration (2D Acceleration doesn't work, but not a release blocker)
* Dual core processing
* Bluetooth
* Sound
* Accelerometer
* Power Management
* Battery Reporting
* Camera(only video chat, no recording or snapshots)
* Vibration
* Backlight
* LED
* Multiboot (via moboot)
* ClockworkMod Recovery
* Fast Switch Boot
* Fake SD card Mount
* Light Sensor(need to check "Enable Light Decrease" in cyanogenmod settings->display->automatic backlight
* Accessing webOS files from Android and vice versa
* Touchstone Support
* Softkeys
* Wifi
* And much, much more!
As far as what *doesn't* work, that list is probably too long for a FAQ.
* Many apps will have compatibility issues. Many. Including possibly your favorite app.
* Phone-related items (such as the dialer and text messenger) are left in the build. These apps consume minimal energy and can largely be ignored.
* Speaking of energy-- power management has not been the focus of the port thus far. Battery life is not as good as it might be, and you can probably expect improvement in this area over time.
DOES ROM MANAGER WORK?
Not completely. It can't be used to install or update ClockworkMod Recovery for example. Developer Koush will first need to add TouchPad compatibility to Rom Manager.
ONCE THE ALPHA IS INSTALLED, HOW DO I UPDATE FROM THERE?
Once CM is installed, you can use the original ACME installer to install most (but not all) subsequent "update...zip" files you come across.
Or, if you have installed and are familiar with ClockworkMod Recovery, you can also use it to install "update...zip" files as you would for other CyanogenMod devices.
WHAT IS THIS "CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY" EXACTLY?
ClockworkMod Recovery, which you can start into from the boot menu, is a special "Recovery" mode-- often used in emergencies when your regular system doesn't load for some reason. Once you have started ClockWorkMod, you are presented with a series of menus and can chose to reset your installation of CyanogenMod to factory settings or load or format individual areas (called "partitions") of your installation.
Additionally, ClockworkMod can be used to back up or restore your entire Cyanogenmod installation to your SD Card. It can also install updates from special "update files" (which are usually named update-some-name.zip).
Since ClockworkMod Recovery is part of CyanogenMod, it is only "aware" of your Cyanogenmod installation. It can not back up or install updates to WebOS or any other operating system.
THE TOUCHPAD DOESN'T HAVE AN SD CARD SLOT. YET CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY AND OTHER APPS IN CYANOGENMOD MAY REQUIRE ME TO USE AN SD CARD. WHAT NOW?
If you've used WebOS, you may be familiar with the user-accessible "media" partition that can be mounted to your computer via USB. Well, that "media" partition is now also shared with ClockworkMod Recovery and CyanogenMod, both of whom now identify it as the SD Card (or /sdcard or /mnt/sdcard). So think of this area as a "fake" SD Card, which can be accessed from WebOS, ClockworkMod Recovery, AND CyanogenMod. You can therefore use it as a common area to share files between different operating systems as well as mount it to your PC (again, from different boots). Neat, huh?
I KEEP SEEING REFERENCES TO "MOBOOT". WHAT'S THAT?
MoBoot is a project separate from CyanogenMod, lead by jcsullins and tmzt and based on the "lk" project, which allows the TouchPad to boot into multiple operating systems or recovery images. Technically speaking, it loads just after the "bootie" bootloader that comes with the TouchPad, and displays a menu for the user to select whether they'd like to boot into the stock WebOS or Cyanogenmod, or something else.
You can install the latest version of moboot using ACME Installer. It can NOT yet be installed from ClockworkMod Recovery.
More information about using moboot can be found on IRC (freenode server) in the #moboot channel.
Or, you can learn more about the project at:
http://code.google.com/p/moboot
SO WHERE DO I REPORT BUGS?
The issue list is currently at http://code.google.com/p/cmtouchpad/issues/list
To avoid duplication, do not submit a new issue until you have thoroughly read the existing issues.
OH NOES! I SCREWED EVERYTHING UP! WHAT DO I DO IF I "BRICK" OR SOMEHOW MY TABLET STOPS WORKING?
After you freak out and regret having tried this, you can attempt to hold down the "home" button and the power button together for about 30 seconds.
DIDN'T WORK
Still nothing? Or maybe you have a dreaded triangle-with-an-exclamation-mark on the screen?
Another "emergency" idea (for advanced folks only) is to boot ClockWorkMod Recovery *directly* from your computer via USB cable rather than from the TouchPad's internal storage. To try this, find an "update...zip" file that contains ClockWorkMod. Inside this zip file is a file called something like "uImage.ClockWorkMod". Extract/unzip that file to your computer, then use novacom (which you used with ACME installer) to "inject" ClockworkMod into your TouchPad.
This process should be familiar to you-- very similar in fact to using ACME Installer. It's done by starting the tablet with the up-volume key held down. When you see the USB icon, connect your computer to the TouchPad via USB, then, in a Terminal, navigate on your computer to where the uImage.ClockWorkmod file is, and type:
novacom boot mem:// < uImage.ClockworkMod
Assuming everything went well and ClockworkMod did start up, you may now use CWM to re-install "update...zip" files, restore from backups, format partitions, or reset everything to factory settings. Or use ADB (search online for "ADB" if you're not familiar with this fantastic Android tool) to figure out what's wrong.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND ANY OF WHAT YOU JUST SAID. CAN'T I JUST START OVER?
Sounds like you should give the "WebOS Doctor" a shot. The WebOS Doctor is a program from HP that is used, effectively, to wipe your TouchPad and reinstall the WebOS software so you can begin anew. Get more info here:
http://ws.hpwebos.com/webosdoctor/sorry.htm
The very helpful homebrew site WebOS-Internals.org also has a page that talks about how to use it:
http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/How_To_Recover
DO I HAVE ANY OTHER OPTIONS FOR HELP?
If none of the above ideas helped, you'll have to go online for assistance.
Browse to http://webchat.freenode.net/ and fill out the web form. Under "Channels", put #cyanogenmod-touchpad and hopefully someone there will have some helpful advice. It is usually not necessary to preface your question with "Can I ask a question?"-- just go ahead and ask.
You may also try one of the many support forums at www.rootzwiki.com or www.xda-developers.com or another Android site.
To a large extent, the Android community will have to help each other as this is an unofficial, buggy release with no corporate, official, or really *any* support. Now you know the reason for all the caveats and warnings.
WHERE IS THE SOURCE CODE FOR THIS RELEASE?
Some of the Android code licensed under the Apache and other Open Source licenses for this alpha test version is not yet available to the general public. However, all GNU Public Licensed software that comprises CyanogenMod, including the kernel, is available at http://www.github.com/cyanogenmod. The kernel for TouchPad used by this project is available at https://github.com/CyanogenMod/hp-kernel-tenderloin .
When appropriate (hopefully sooner rather than later), CyanogenMod will open the code, and patches/fixes can then be submitted by developers via Gerrit at:
http://review.cyanogenmod.com
IS THIS ALPHA OVERCLOCKED?
Overclocking is optional and can be done with an app like SetCPU. Keep in mind it can cause additional instability!
HOW CAN I DONATE TO THIS PROJECT?
To be clear, the key developers of CyanogenMod for TouchPad are not interested in monetary donations for this effort. This is a project motivated by the challenge and satisfaction of working on the port itself, not by financial reward. The developers have previously announced that any "bounty" won for completing this port to TouchPad will be donated to charity.
That said, there are some who have insisted on making some kind of donation to express their support and gratitude. It should therefore be noted that the official CyanogenMod Web site does have a "donation" area in the bottom right-hand corner of the front page.
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/
Also, the CM for TP developers recommend you learn about the Electronic Frontier Foundation ( http://www.eff.org ), which is an organization fighting to preserve and protect the legal rights of the common citizen in this rapidly changing digital age. As large companies and governments try to limit or narrow your rights, the EFF is on the front lines defending the public interest. A contribution to the EFF is also tax-deductible for United States citizens. As supporters, the developers invite you to visit the EFF web site and learn more about their activities and goals.
http://www.eff.org
I AM A "KANGER" WHO WANTS TO TAKE CYANOGENMOD, MODIFY SOME MINOR FEATURE SUCH AS FONTS OR THEMES, THEN OFFER IT UNDER A NEW NAME AND ASK FOR DONATIONS (OR SELL IT) AS IF THIS IS ALL MY WORK. CAN YOU HELP ME?
Absolutely not. One of the concerns about releasing an early alpha is the sad fact that unscrupulous parasites will creep from the shadows of the Internet, slap their name on this port, then try to sell it for an inflated and unwarranted profit. This has been the case for CM on other devices, and we expect, unfortunately, the same thing will likely happen here.
While the GPL and Apache licenses certainly allow CyanogenMod and Android to be sold, and while there may be legitimate occasions where installation or support expenses may warrant or justify charging money, the CM for Touchpad developers are unified in disgust for those who prey upon the uninformed by simply not telling them that a free version of the software is available or by claiming in their advertisements or to the media (who should know better) that they have created or designed the port themselves.
To be clear now-- mods, themes, remixes, and hacks are great- it's the life blood of open source. And there's nothing at all wrong with asking for donations or even charging for something of value you've contributed. But skimming off the free work of others is plain douchy. And not in a good way.
So the developers ask YOU, beloved Internet, to do your part in keeping an eye out for each other's welfare, and enlighten those, including in the media, who might otherwise be taken in by unscrupulous hucksters.
SO WHAT ABOUT YOU? WHO DO YOU WANT TO THANK?
Shout-outs, yeah! Let's start with Hewlett Packard/Palm -- for creating a wonderful tablet, then making it affordable. We are inspired and encouraged by their commitment to Open Source (and do hope this kernel source kerfuffle is resolved quickly). Generally speaking, we really like WebOS and especially the WebOS community, and wanted to made sure that WebOS would continue to be accessible along with CM7, so that users can have the best of all worlds. While thanking HP, it's appropriate to also thank their technical partner Qualcomm, whose Code Aurora project makes CM7 possible not only on the TouchPad, but many other devices as well.
Thanks to Rootzwiki for hosting a forum where people could have meta-conversations about what was appropriate for the forum, as well as meta-meta-conversations and meta-meta-meta conversations... to degrees extending into meta-oblivion. Similarly, thanks to the residents of the freenode IRC channel #cyanogenmod-touchpad for never, ever asking for an ETA. Again, big ups to the WebOS homebrew community for their participation and willingness to offer all kinds of technical insights into how things worked. Particularly we'd like to recognize http://www.webos-internals.org as a source of enlightenment for anyone who's interested in WebOS. If you haven't installed their excellent Preware by now, you have no excuse. Go do it.
A special moment of recognition goes to the members of Team TouchDroid. Wow, that was some drama, huh?
There are countless others who deserve buku credit-- Google, Github, Kernel.org, the wider CyanogenMod and Android community, the thread-that-never-ended on slickdeals.net, those who contributed TouchPads to developers, our teachers, parents, wives, husbands, children, pets, Newton, Tesla, Turing, etc. But this isn't the Grammys, so we'll stop here. The general point is to recognize that all developers stand on the shoulders of giants.
So thanks, everyone, for your help and support so far. And if anyone was missed, sorry.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN ICE CREAM SANDWICH COMES OUT?
You mean the next version of Android expected from Google sometime in November '11? Well, if the transition from Froyo (2.2) to Gingerbread (2.3) is a model, it may take several months from the release of the Ice Cream Sandwich source code before a viable port to TouchPad is available.
Or not. Ya never know.
WHERE IS THE SOURCE CODE?
Source code can be found at http://www.github.com/cyanogenmod
As of alpha 1 the kernel source is open. The rest of the source will be opened
as soon as some code can be merged into mainline CM7. This expected to happen
very soon.

Any feedback from the early installers?
At work, so I won't be able to try this for a good 10-11 hours.
Missing G-Apps still trying to find an update that will install them, other than that the device is very snappy touchscreen it so much more responsive a few minor bugs (one of which it wont connect to my work's wireless) other than that i am very impressed.

I've written a "somewhat" easier tutorial here
Question at all: is it normal there is no marketplace?
(I'm not that android-guru ^^ )
so two questions to the early addopters: will it delete/modify the custom kernel in webos and will it **** up the partition layout on the touchpad?

Thanks for your tutorial!
However step 5 is vague.
could you please elaborate on:
grab the cmd, browse to the place where you’ve downloaded the acmeinstaller file, and type “C:\Program Files\Palm, Inc\novacom” boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller
How do I "browse to the place I've downloaded the acme installer?
Lets say for example it is in: C:\Users\Zak\Desktop\cm7touchpad\ACMEinstaller
How do I browse there in CMD.exe ?
Thanks!

I am getting "Access is denied" after typing:

1) are you running cmd in elevated permissions?
2) do you have novacom installed in the first place?

Yes, and Yes.
It shows up in my programs list as "Novacomd"
Well mine installed ok but it seems to wipe your WebOS install (at least it did for me) so I had to restore my palm profile!
Not had much time to play with android yet but im impressed so far!
Loving this! xD

download the google apps package from here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version#Google_Apps
put in on your touchpad
boot clockwork recovery using novacom (same as for installing cm7, but instead of using "ACMEInstaller" use "uImage.ClockworkMod", go to install, install from zip on sd card, choose the google apps package
done =)
and you have a functional marketplace

Boot to WebOS by Default after installing CyanogenMod Android

Note: This is done within WebOs, with preware installed, and a program called Internalz Pro installed from preware
1.Launch Internalz Pro (for help installing Internalz Pro see here)
2.Tap “Internalz Pro” in the top left-hand corner to open the application menu.
3.Tap “Preferences”
4.Scroll to the bottom of the screen and toggle the “Master mode” setting to “On.”
5.Tap “Yes” when the “Enable Master Mode?” warning screen appears.
6.Tap “Internalz Pro” in the top left-hand corner to open the application menu.
7.Tap “Close”
8.Using Internalz Pro, navigate to the following directory:
/boot
You can tap the “..” icon at the top of the navigation structure to move up one directory at any time during navigation. Your current location will always be listed at the top of the window. Simply keep tapping on the appropriate directory names (moving up a level if you need to backtrack or make a mistake) until you reach the proper location.
9.Tap the “mooboot.default” file.
10.Tap “Open”
11.Change the line:
CyanogenMod
to
WebOS
NOTE: DO NOT COPY & PASTE THIS LINE
12.Tap “Internalz Pro” in the top left-hand corner to open the application menu.
13.Tap “Save File”
14.Tap “Internalz Pro” in the top left-hand corner to open the application menu.
15.Tap “Close”
16.Tap “Internalz Pro” in the top left-hand corner to open the application menu.

18.Scroll to the bottom of the screen and toggle the “Master mode” setting to “Off.”
19.Tap “Internalz Pro” in the top left-hand corner to open the application menu.
20.Tap “Close”
21.Close Internalz Pro.
22.Restart the Touchpad. Now, WebOS will be selected as the default Operating System instead of CyanogenMod Android from the boot menu.

sorry, but wouldn't modifying moboot.default file be easier? Run the following command from terminal or through adb:
echo "webOS " > /boot/moboot.default
All you need to do is mount the boot partition prior to doing this which I assume can be done through TWRP or you can google it. Then again, pretty sure 95 out of a 100 users would want Android to boots by default.

it should be "webOS" not "WebOS" ...
I tried using the easier method you mentioned but I think due to my lack of knowledge I was unable to get it to work. I just stumbled upon this at a website and it worked for me. I just thought this might be helpfull to anyone else like me. Wanted to install preware anyway.

Hey, no worries. I am sure there are others who couldn't get the easier method to work, so your steps will be appreciated. If you want to provide some additional details on where you failed in the easier method, maybe I can offer some additional help in case you need it in the future.

Thanks, corrected the typo in my post.
Another option
Or you could just install CyBoot in webOS and change the default back and forth to your liking. It just modifies the moboot file and it is stupid-easy, you cannot screw it up.
I rarely even boot into webOS anymore though. Waiting for the first open source update!
CM7 (and soon ICS CM9) are doing me fine right now.
Funny, I did this on my own by mistake. Just run Acme Installer and only have moboot and CWM in the cminstall folder. Put the Android build anywhere else (like the root). You then install Android from CWM. WebOS will be default. I was going crazy trying to stop webOS from being default, lol.

+1 for cyboot package from preware. It has an idiotproof UI, and you can change the time of the delay.

Funny that the first time I installed android it booted into android by default but since I installed or upgraded to a newer rom its webos as the primary OS boot.

Funny, I'm the opposite. I only boot in to Android for specific applications. I've gotten used to the speed and ease of use of webOS. I'm an Android guy since the G1 days but frankly, Palm's OS is much more polished. if it had the corporate backing and application stack I doubt I'd ever run Android on my tablet. Now on my phone, completely different story.
I wish I would have known about Cyboot as I searched and searched for an easy way to get a default boot into WebOs. All the info I found pretty much assumed I understood @;/?& acronyms and how to properly type commands in the terminal. I'm an old dos man and still could not get all the commands typed right. Off to preware for Cyboot. Thanks All!

Agreed
My exact sentiments also. I think webOS is the ultimate OS for tablets and if the developers of either "Words with Friends" or "Wordfeud" would create a client for the Touchpad I doubt I would even have Android installed on it. I also use an Android phone, webOS doesn't cut it for me as a phone.

Trying to support WebOs by buying apps that I can use to work and play. I love Android but I am quite satisfied with Android on my phone and WebOs on my Touchpad. WebOs takes some getting used to but kinda feels like an old comfortable T-Shirt. It's not that popular of an Os so web surfing and downloads don't worry me at the moment. I am watching CM9 and probably will try out Android again on the Touchpad but CM7 caused weird boot issues that I didn't care to live with. With WebOs I just turn my Touchpad on and go. Thats what I really like and all that matters to me. All you guys and gals at XDA really show me the possibilities.

I liked webOS, didn't quite like CM7, since it's a gingerbread, not for tablet. You should really try CM9, it's like night and day compared to CM7. I haven't boot to webOS since.

Easy way, from something like Xterm on webOS missed one line.
# mount -o remount,rw /boot
# echo "webOS " > /boot/moboot.default
then give it a reboot.
Is CyBoot not in the HP Appstore anymore? I can't find it in the catalog and I'd like to try that out before going and trying the OP's method. Thanks guys.

Yeah, I found it. Lol. But now, I can't get CyBoot to work with CM9. WebOS boots by default, but when I set to boot android on next boot, but I get no choice upon rebooting. It boots webOS by default everytime.

Anytime I install a new ICS ROM it makes that choice the new default. I never tried the next boot option. I only used cyboot to change the default TO webOS, as every android install changed the default to android. You can try to edit the file as described in this thread. That can be done through internalzpro in webOS. Make sure you type the exact option as it appears in moboot, and it is case sensitive. Cyboot is just a GUI on top of that process.

Minimal Android OS for Note 4 Audio & Video?

Am thinking about using a Note 4 for Audio and Video only (no phone or Internet).
Hope someone else has tried this and has some suggestions concerning reducing Android OS to minimum.
Also instead of reducing the Android OS if it would be better to use a 3rd party ROM?

If you're not interested in internet, yet want reliable audio and video, maybe try old kk roms that are optimized or some lollipop aosp roms. That way the software is at its lightest.
QuoPrimum Thanks for the tips!
Forgot to add that I am new to Android but have been using Windows for a while.
For Windows there are a number of ways to remove unnecessary parts
1. preformed like Micro XP v0.82
2. make your own using nLite
Anything like this for Android?
Also have been searching for a description what each Android file does like Black Viper does for Windows. Windows Services Information http://www.blackviper.com/windows-services/
Hope someone knows about an Android (or even Linux) info similar to this.

You could disable/freeze apps with titanium backup or using adb.
QuoPrimum Thanks for the suggestion "You could disable/freeze apps with titanium backup or using adb."
Checked "Titanium Backup User’s Guide" https://www.titaniumtrack.com/kb/titanium-backup-kb/titanium-backup-user-guide.html Was especially interested in 7. Manage Applications List of apps Tapping the “Backup/Restore” button brings you to the application list – or rather the list of available “items”. Here you can see which applications and settings are available on your phone, and what has already been backed up (the symbols to the right tell you the latter – hit your phones menu button and select “Legend” for details on what they mean). Tapping an application brings up a popup from which you can select actions to be taken with the selected item: You can e.g. run an application, back it up, restore it (or its settings). You also may also decide to un-install the application – even if it is a system app! But with the latter, you should be very careful: Remove the wrong thing, and your phone may start malfunctioning. Which is why you should first try whether it’s safe to remove that system application. This can be done by “freezing” it.
Clarification: What type of information is available when select legend.
Also do you know of a beginners guide for Android OS services?

I don't know of any specific guides, but if you look around xda, there should be a few debloating guides for roms.
