Calls & Text Messaging WORKS - Acer Iconia A500

I just got my A500 yesterday and spent all night and day trying to figure out if it was possible to make phone calls, receive phone calls, send and receive text messages. Finally found the solution and it works great. Its a given that you will need to be on Wifi or 3G (tethering or Portable WLAN). Using a FREE app called Viber allows you to make FREE calls and text messages over Wifi and 3G/4G to other Viber users (Android and iOS), what sets this app apart from others is that it maintains your phone #, no need for a new #, pin or username. Only problem is that upon setup the app requires to send you a text message to verify your phone number to setup your account, which is NOT possible on the Acer. I found a simple work around this to problem, so here we go!
What you need:
1. Rooted phone (Android of course)
2. Viber App, its FREE (attached) (Phone ONLY)
3. Rooted Acer
4. Titanium Backup (Installed on both devices)
Instructions:
1. Install Viber on your phone and set up your account, very simple and fast.
2. After installation and confirmation (important: I would make a call or send a few text messages to make sure it's working),
3. Open Titanium Backup and make a back up of Viber
4. Transfer the back up of Titanium Backup to your Acer, make sue you place it the correct folder: sdcard/TitaniumBackup (or where ever you store your Titaniun Backups on your Acer).
5. Open Titanium Backup on your Acer and Restore the Viber app with data
That's it you can now make calls and text messages using Viber, the voice quality is awesome and the speaker is loud and clear!
Hopes this helps, it did for me
You can send invites to your contacts within the Viber app, once someone installs and setups Viber you will receive a pop up notice.
***Do NOT run Viber on both devices at the same time, it may cause FC and routing calls/text messages to the wrong device, simply shut down Viber (More>>Exit) on the device you are not using***

Decent find on making an app work. Question, what's wrong with Skype or gtalk?

I still want an app that enables an android phone tether with the acer iconia via bluetooth, usb or wifi and you are able to text and call people on your tablet.

As for me... I have 16 family/friends on gtalk (only 4 sign on & more than half the time they never notice I sent them a message, "I didnt know") or they are NEVER signed on, either they dont know how to sign on or dont use it at all. Skype, I have 0 family/friends that use it and I not to crazy about it... I just like the simplicity of Viber and ease of use, when you get a text message a pop up appears (like HancentSMS) and you can reply right from there.
I guess what it comes down to is personal preference

would this conflict with google voice?

No not at all, thats the beauty of this app, it does NOT use your google voice number. It uses your actual cell number
I've been using Viber on my phone along with google voice and when people call or text me using Viber it does not effect google voice at all.

Awesome! Works great only downside I found is it will auto rout to the tab unless you turn it off when trying to call to the phone!
But that is minor compared to the awesomeness of the text and calling.! I love how I do not have to leave the app im in to reply.
Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for this tip. I just got it on my tab and placed a call and its great. The odd force close, but otherwise great

Yeah, you really shouldnt have both Viber services running on both devices... Turn one off when using another (guess I should add that to the OP)
The pop up is awesome, dont need to leave your current app to reply

The FC happens here and there, mostly when running Viber on both devices, close one before starting the other and you should be good to go!

Okay just so I'm clear on how viber works... The person i'm sending the text/call to must also have viber installed correct?

+1. If I can't get my friends and family to use Skype etc they're not going to use this.

The difference is that this app runs in the background, your friends and family DONT need to log in, when you call from Viber the phone rings right away, just like your stock phone app does (its just purple). When you text someone a pop up appears on the screen... see attachements
(Yes I have a friend that's a d!ck head and a brother I call Monster)

perhaps a silly question, but it wasnt specified... does the phone need to be pluggd into the tab for this to work? r once its set up it will function as long as there is wifi?

No it does not ... You can leave the phone at home, car or wherever. As long as you have some sort of data connection, whether it be wifi or tethered 3g/4g

Google talk

I tried searching this forum without having to create another thread but I was unsuccessful.
I have a new Tilt 2 on AT&T(previously a blackberry user) and I was trying to get google talk on here?
Can someone assist on how to get this app on here...if it is possible?
Thanks,
While neither of these apps are just Google Talk, they both work well with it. I have been using Slick for several months without any problems, and recently started using OZ IM. Both work great with gtalk.
Lonely Cat games Slick - http://www.lonelycatgames.com/?app=slick
OZ IM (as extracted from HD2, also known as TMOUS Messenger) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5753551&postcount=2
You can set up a number of different IM clients to use Google Talk since it uses a standard protocol.

I have never had a problem - I just install the cab, and sign in to Google Talk using my gmail id and password.
I usually end up flashing a new ROM every few days, and have never had a problem installing & signing in.
What is the specific error you get?

that would be google voice.
You can use a couple different google voice dialers to pull your contact info from google voice, and you can send and reply to SMS messages through outlook. That's what I do

Viber for Android Finally Released!!

Finally "Viber" is released on android.. All my mates with iphones use it and its a really cool cross-platform app.
"Viber is an application for iPhone® and Android™ phones that lets you make free phone calls and send text messages to anyone who also has the application installed.
You can call or text any Viber user, anywhere in the world, for free. Viber integrates seamlessly with your existing address book, has great sound quality and once activated, does not require a PIN, username or any additional "in application" purchase. All Viber features are 100% FREE!"

A really cool app,but I have some questions!
1.Do I have to be connected to the internet, via wifi or 3G?Does it consume my 3G data when connected via 3G?
2.How much Megabytes does a typical call cost approximately?
Nice. I ll try it today.
I was testing the Beta before. Great...but you need wlan for a good Performance

Hi m8, you do need a data connection and according to the folks at viber it uses approximately 240 KB per minute up and down, 14 MB per hour up and down. I'd assume that is under ideal conditions (dont know what they are tho). i've heard it works way better on wifi than 3g..

Hi m8, not sure of the exact differences but heres some general ones..
1. Viber’s interface is very easy to use – it looks completely similar to the iPhone basic application, and this makes a huge difference for most users in the world. Simple elegance is what works.
2. Viber does not require login/password in order to log in, unlike the great majority of VoIP applications today, but instead it uses the user’s original cellular phone number. This makes the registration process very quick, and helps users find other friends who have Viber very easily. This way more and more friends recommend each other to install Viber, and have free calls.
3. Finally, Viber doesn’t have to be open when receiving a call, thanks to Viber’s support of Push Notifications feature. This means that Viber saves battery, and that users are always available to receive Viber’s free calls.
not working on my sg3
Not sure why but SMS works, I can hear but no one can hear me. Have used wifi. Now even linphone does not work (even echo calibration fails).
Am on JP4 with g3mod 1.3.2 performance. Am not able to find the issue here. Phone works but any voip app does not.
Is there anything I am missing here. Voice search works but voice dial does not hear me either.
UART and USB are both set to PDA (not sure if that had anything to do here) and dev mode is ON.
Hmm I'll try this with some friends
Hi,
I had viber installed in my gti5801 and it was working fine....after i changed to Kyrillos 9.3, when i try to activate viber i am unable to receive the code message and i tried to get code i received call from viber but nothing heard...

You should post this comment under the comments section of the viber app on the android market because the OP is not the developer for viber.
From what I've seen of this app, it works pretty well, but I'd recommend What's App. I wonder if they both connect to the IOS version of this, not many of my friends have Android phones

[Q] kindle Fire Messaging options

Hey guys. thanks for having so much available info on damn near everything. I have been looking but still have not found what im looking for, so i have made a new thread. First off i have the moto triumph cm7.08 rooted. Next the kindle fire rooted(stock os). I was trying to find a way i could send txts from my kindle when its wireless tethered to my moto using the hot spot built in to the cm7. i used to have an app that let me tethered my old Samsung to a computer and i was able to send and receive the messages right from my puter. Any help or guidance will be appreciated. thanks in advance.
google voice works great
Yeah, Google Voice is what I use.
thanks to the both of you I got it working on my phone and the voice calling aspect is odd i have to press 1 to accept any call now coming in which is a bit annoying, i looked in settings and did see anything to stop that but i was on mass public transport so it did not have 100% of my attention. anyways thanks again.
Ok I think I go it working.... nope any input would be awesome.
Voice is fine if you already use it, but for those of us that don't it would require giving out a new number to everyone you know. Unless I missed something, that isn't very feasible for all of us.
I would think some kind of remote control or text forwarding app would be better... I would like to send and receive txt from my cell number on my kindle, and I think that's what the op was wanting as well

I just reviewed that app and that looks like its for desk tops or laptops. Im trying to keep my phone in my pocket and test from my kindle fire which is connected through the internet on my phone hotspot or barnacle both work on my phone (cm7 tinkerguys beta.08)
Simple for me is using yahoo! Messenger. I already have an account, and can txt to any number I choose, not just those on my list. It goes to the recipient as my yahoo screen name and when they reply to the txt, I get it in my messenger on my kindle. Great free, no tethering required option. But I still have to be connected to wifi, so maybe not the option you're looking for.

But again I doubt this is transparent, in other words the people you send texts to don't see it as your cellphone that is sending the text, this would confuse some people... looking for transparency here

Assuming you are in the US you can use Google Voice. I use this as my main number on my DroidX and the app on my Galaxy tab. There are other texting apps like text free but I am not sure of tablet support.
I've tried Jaxstr to send SMS from a wifi tab but no luck

1+ to TextPlus. Its worth trying out and it works on adroid and ios. They give your own number and I beleive unlimited txting. The calls you need to pay for though.
I got the Wifi + 3G and I can text to other phone numbers.
I use Textab on my DX and 10.1. Works pretty well, but after awhile my DX really starts to lag while using the Textab app.
Need to finish setting up my google voice.
If you use Exchange, you can also SMS via the e-mail client. Also, if you're with AT&T they have a unified messaging app in the Market that allows you to send and receive texts on your tablet over Wi-Fi.

you can also use whatsapp
Tablet Talk is pretty cool for using your phone over wifi/bluetooth also.
If you have an android phone you could use desksms. It's made by Clockworkmod. You set it up on the phone and with a yearly charge it lets you text, from your number, using gtalk or gmail on tablet or in browser. Been using it since it was released. It's great.

I haven't tried it but if it's VZW related I will not put it on my device, I don't trust them.
I have used it on my PC.
When you first run it, it takes a while to download the last 3 months worth of text messages to/from your account....
...which in itself is scary....
I used it as my primary Texting App because it makes it effortless to sync across to my Tablet, and also allow texting from my Tablet. I don't trust Verizon either, but this is a dang good program. Put it on my spouses phone and tablet as well. Plus, I flash my phone(s) often and this actually syncs all SMS and MMS.

I also figured out today that somehow, this app running on a PC shows when some other parties are typing. I suspect it's when the other party is using the messages app vs. the stock SMS app. The friend that I was chatting with earlier when I spotted this is coming over shortly, so I'll see whether she's using the stock messaging app, or "Verizon Messages".

Thank you for the link. I was unaware that this even existed! Downloading it now to play with it - whoot!
So my friend is using an S5 with the Messages+ app set as default SMS app on her phone. They must've done that from the factory?
I'm willing to bet this is in preparation for the move to VoLTE. (The messges+ app uses the internet to send messages vs. SMS messaging which is carried on the 1x network)
