[Q] Anybody know if it's possible to connect my phone through USB - Acer Iconia A500

Hi guys, I'm still hesitate to root and change the wpa file for wifi ad-hoc, and I think it'll be just even faster if we can use the USB to connect the phone as a modem. I have TP2 windows mobile, does anyone know if that's possible, or any app for that? Thanks.

hmmmmm
Been years since I have used Windows Mobile, but had a similar issue with my Samsung Intercept - the only wifi tethering apps I could find only supported ad_hoc connections.
Finally found a program that supported full infrastructure mode - was a lot easier that way.
A quick search of xda turned up something that might help you out: I used search terms "windows mobile infrastructure" as my terms and found my way here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=357152
I think it is commercial software, but there seems to be a demo/trial thing going.
Best of luck - hope you get it working!

Thanks, but that's WMwifirouter, and only gives you ad-hoc, to my understanding, I'm using the latest version of the paid version of it.

I've tried different ways to tether-by-USB an HTC Touch Pro2 (Windows Mobile 6.5) to the Iconia A500 (Android 3.1). I tried both Internet Sharing and PdaNet unsuccessfully on a rooted A500 with a couple different versions of a modified wpa_supplicant file. No joy.
I ended up successfully using the trial version of WMWifiRouter on the TP2 to create a wifi hotspot for the Iconia. (I tried the USB method first on WMWifiRouter, but that didn't work.) I'll purchase the app as soon the trial expires--maybe someone will figure out a way to USB-tether the Iconia to WM 6.5 before then.

PROBLEMS TO USE WMwifiRouter

Hi guys, i'm trying WMWifiRouter by using linux, but it doesn't work good..I installed program on my ppc (HTC P3600) then turned on wifi (of my ppc) started WMwifirouter, and then in my pc i saw this network in mode Ad hoc..but i'm unable to use internet by using this software. Some helps???

Hi there!
I have the same problem too. WMWifiRouter seems to not work at all on Linux.
I use wicd network manager but, it has problems assigning the IP address to the PC.
Anybody knows how to solve this problem??
Any alternatives?
Windows Server 2003
It doesn't seem to play well with Windows Server 2003 either...same results:
it looks like it makes an adhoc connection, but no internet connectivity.
If your OS is not designed for adhoc connectivity (ie: a "home user" windows
system) I think there is a lot more to be done on the PC side to get this working.
I've tried everything from disabling other network interfaces to
altering routing to modifying metrics (all on the server) but still can't
get a hit...though strangely, I briefly did load a Google page (as I was
simultaneously disabling a NIC or something), but I can't be sure it wasn't
just in the IE cache...
I'm going to check out ICS Control because it's still free, and it has
a lot more open manipulation of parms...not geered to be hidden for the
"dumb" user.
I'd like to see the source made available, then we would be
able to contribute to it's further development, and it would not end up
like WMWifi
I think I'll go over here (below) and suggest that
( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=377047 )
A bump for future reference. WMWifiRouter works in linux. Some linux wifi card drivers just don't like the ad-hoc connection mode it uses. The solution is to change the wifi driver. For me, it was the move from madwifi to ath5k. For others, it may involve using ndiswrapper and a native windows driver instead of a native linux one. Now my Ubuntu Jaunty connects fine to WMWifiRouter.

I'm using Mint on a HP Mini which I believe does use the ndiswrapper. That just will not connect to WMWIFIRouter.

Martin,
you "believe" or are sure? Ndiswrapper is not used by default because it involves downloading proprietary Windows drivers specific to your hardware. By default, an open source driver is installed. What is your wireless network card? Type 'lspci' in terminal to find out.

Windows PC /BT PAN/ to Android. Is this possible?

Hello, and thanks for such a wonderful resource as this site is.
I've had my Sprint touch for over a year and hated all the quirks the stock winmo 6.1 had with it.
My question is: Is it possible to set up a Bluetooth Connection on a windows PC, and have it share the internet connection of the PC with Android? I remember being able to do it with my Zodiac years ago, but don't know if it would apply to Android.
I have no data plan on my phone, so I can't download the camera fix, or any applications. This is the only thing that's keeping me from wiping windows from NAND.
Thank you for reading, and your insight.
Afaik, no.

With Linux, yes, with XP, maybe, with Vista / 7 probably not. But you can't get to the market on your phone via BT pan, I've tried.
May I ask how you managed to do it with Linux? I'm running Ubuntu atm, but I haven't made the switch because of this reason as well. You are still able to browse the web using the browser, yes?

I'm happy to post it, but only some things work. Android executes some kind of connection check before letting you access most things... so, for example, over bt pan I can launch the youtube app, it will load the homepage including the thumbnails, but you can't load the actual videos. Market won't download. Google maps, however, works beautifully. I can't remember whether the browser worked or not.
EDIT: I'll have to post after I get home, it'll be a few hours. Also - I'm sure someone with come brains could make the necessary changes to make the bt connection pass the connection check. But I, sadly, have no brains. Call me the scarecrow.
Edit 2 - Ok, I must have had this going on cupcake under the old rootfs setup, because I'm having trouble with donut / noroootfs. I'll roll my test phone back tomorrow and get the pan stuff posted.
thanks for the speedy answer, i'm getting Warm Donut right now, and i'll see how it goes

Remote Desktop Help.

Please don't say use google, i have been on the phone with htc, on countless treads trying to do this. None of them helped.
I have a 64 bit Windows 7 and a win6.5 HTC HD2.
I cannot connect using remote desktop,
I have tried, open ports, firewalls down, allowing the remote to access, Lan/Wireless Ips, 3 Different HTC HD2 phones.
My phone and laptop running on same router, my router is a 2wire 2701HGV-B
I am open to any suggestions besides flashing due to that i don't know how to do it and i don't want to brick my phone.
My ROM is 2.10.531.1 and my radio is 2.08.50.08_2 if that helps.
I would appreciate help and suggestions if you have any. Thanks!
What version of W7 do you have ? Remote desktop will only work with professional or ultimate. If you are running home premium it will not work.
i am running home edition but i heard you can still run remote desktop with home. hmmm
Actually, this is a problem for me too. I'll buy Win7 soon and i must know if i need the professional version.. otherwise i'll just stay with home edition witch is more than enough for me..
I can assure is works very well (even in landscape mode) with the Ultimate RC i am using now.
For Home Premium users like myself, you need to follow the instructions on This Website
RDM
I use RDP on my home PC to connect to my work PC, which I have all the settings.
Can I connect to my work PC with the RDM program on the phone or do I need something else? I've put all the settings in but keep getting the same error (Can't connect, 1. invalid name or IP 2. Network error).

Is it possible to get WiFi sharing to work in Infrastructure?

Now I know it's possible to get an Ad-hoc connnection using things like WMWiFiRouter and the likes, but one thing I've noticed is that you can get your phone to act as an Infrastructure WiFi Access Point when running Android. Now I ask, is this possible in Windows Mobile too? I don't want to switch to Android every time I want to use it.
I ask because a couple of my devices can't see Ad-hoc networks.
I know it's not possible by default because of the wireless driver WM uses (as opposed to the Android one). Now I don't know if there are any custom drivers or applications that use them, but I haven't heard of any.

Ok, so I'm guessing this post, and the lack of other responses, tells me I will have to use Android for infrastructure Wi-Fi sharing then.

How do I install this on X5?

Noob question... How do I install this ad-hoc support onto my X5?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961
Tried doing this myself, it seems like our wpa_supplicant is different from other Android phones. Even using the V0.6.10 wpa_supplicant ad-hoc fix meant that WiFi would not enable.
Rats I really wanted to get that going
How did you install it? Even if it doesn't work I still want to know how
Ideos X5 / Huawei U8800
Disable WiFi
Replace stock WPA_Supplicant
Enable WiFi
Then should work, but it just gets stuck and disables WiFi.
Although, I was watching logcat and it seems it is checking the wrong location for the wpa_supplicant.conf. Although, even placing it there doesn't allow it to correctly function.
Let's just pretend I'm so noob I don't even know how replace stock WPA_Supplicant *cough*

You can enter recovery-mode (holding both volume-buttons and power-button on startup) and connect the phone to a pc, then replace the /etc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf with the custom file.
Or
Get the custom conf-file to your phone and copy-paste it to /etc/wifi/ with rootexplorer (don't forget to check "mount R/W" in rootexplorer)
Sweet, thanks guys.
Pity you said it doesn't work
I really want to find a way to create/join a network between my phone and my netbook
Creating a hotspot on the phone just seems to share the phones internet, and I can't access the netbook from the phone. Will have to try find another way

Isn't that exactly what he doesn't want to do?
I think he's trying to access the phones files wirelessly similar to Doubletwist Airsync or Kies Air.
Have a look at android sync manager.

Connectify allows you to turn you pc into a wireless ap, It will allow his phone to talk to the rest of his network and internet.
This gets around the need to get android to connect to a ad-hoc wifi.
I've tried connectify, but I can't install it on my version of Windows (Win7 ThinPC, which supports .Net 4 only. I think Connectify is .Net 3.5)
I'm trying to use foobar2000 controller: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.cav.foobar2000controller
It makes a connection with http to the laptop
Any way I can change the tread title now that original question is no point cause it doesn't work anyway?
