throw the VGA cable.
I know it will display the screen throw VGA out, but I am not sure whether it will enable the touch screen function, any of you know this?

Seems to me the key question is how would it get positioning info back to the ameo? That looks like a PS2 port on the non-vga cable. IF it was sending back mouse positioning info AND a simple ps2 to USB converter would work then I'd guess it MIGHT work with the mouse drivers i've seen discussed elsewhere. There is a fair few conditions to meet but mostly at a low level by the look of things. Not much info to go on and also it loks like they are using a pen of some kind there. That makes it less useful I think?

I just don't know if we simply plug in the vga cable from our Athena to the touch screen, will that work?
Possibility not, I can kind of see a usb cable there, how about plug that in the usb host ? but then maybe we still need to install the driver.....
Basically, what I am trying to do here to use get a bigger screen to show for Athena in a car. So, I will then have much bigger TOMTOM, and also can watch movie or go on internet.

I cant see any specks on that, but i did find another that said it was usb, if thats the case theres no reason why it shouldnt work.

it seems like they all need to install driver, do you think it will work without driver?
thats the only problem, does it need specialist drivers? I havnt been able to come up with an answer yet.
But i wont be buying one for the car, somone nicked me vario yesterday from the car so not even chancing the Ameo.
I was just going to buy a little 7" tv I bought this tiny Keyboard out of Maplin on offer. thought it would look sweet in the car. but this is giving me other ideas, anybody shed light!
They ALL need specialist drivers.
Touchscreen is absolute position, mouse is relative. You NEED the custom driver. It may be possible, but I dont know how.

Thanks for your answer, i just ask one of the seller there on ebay, and the answer I got is I will be able to plug the VGA cable in, that will enable the screen to display, but in order to get the touch screen working, I also need to plug in a USB, so now the question is whether the USB host will work on this....and of course the driver need to work too
The 4in1 cable should allow the USB to connect, but you would have to convince 3m or somebody (make most of the drivers) to write a PPC driver.
As almost ALL ppc's are touchscreen, they probably wouldnt bother for the 1 customer that wants it
If you know a coding guru who understands USB, then get them to do it for you. Either way, I doubt its gonna happen.

Don't know how many of u are interested in this issue, but anyway:
1. just grab the generic touch screen driver for win ce 5.0 from the usual site.
2. Copy 'n paste the UsbTouch.dll file into windows root directory of the X7500.
3. Plug the video cable (the one with usb connector).
4. Plug the xenarc TS usb cable in the abovementioned cable.
5. Wait for the dialogue box asking for the driver to be used with the unknown device.
6. Write the name of the .dll file copied into the device.
7. Press ok.
et voilà, les jeux sont fait! It woks perfectly, without even the need for calibration.
This is (even if it lacks some of the fun of setting up a carputer from scratch) the ultimate carputer, perfect integration among all application and real time (quite) OS.

Your on the right track with this answer,
Look for a touch screen that has a protocol that is treated as a standard HID ( Human interface device ) Ie:mouse, keyboard etc.etc.
if you can find such a device then the built in drivers for plug and play HID's will work fine.
otherwise the rest are right

well i started some searches and found out an app that enables jade to recognize some usb devices like a mouse key board stuff like this so
i was askin does any one has tried it and is it possible to plug a flash memory to jade puttin in consideration the plug of those devices needs an external power intake.

The generic answer to your question is no, unless you are hooking up your smartphone to a computer with ActiveSync loaded, it will not be recognized by USB devices like a scanner, camera, keyboard, etc. unless special drivers are installed onto your smartphone.
However, I Yahoo'd Zeno_USB_Host_Drivers and came up with this website: http://www.cnpda.com.cn/thread-223519-1-1.html
It appears that if those Zeno drivers are installed to your smartphone, you will be able to connect to devices listed on that page. That page only lists one phone and WM 6.1 which makes me very leery about trying to download and install it. I would wait until more is known about these drivers if I were you. . .

Nothing like that will work without drivers. If you had linux drivers you might be able to make something work, but it would not be plug and play.

what about those plug and play webcams with installed drivers on them already? shouldn't that work since it is both windows/linux compatible? just as the same how external hard drives will work with our archos, and that also have drivers installed in them. (both windows/linux compatible also)

Ive never seen one, so I don't know for sure. Hopefully someone else will chime in on that. If you have an a70, there is only limited power available from the usb port. 200ma I think. If you try one and it works, be sure and let us know.

Just an FYI hard drives and cameras do not usually have drivers installed on them.. For example windows uses a driver called usbstor.sys that usb drives must adhere to in order to work properly. Delete this file and all your lovely USB drives in windows will no longer work unless you installed some crazy 3rd party software..

Ok so I just realized that most apps are drivers within itself (correct?) to run basic functions for a specific hardware like say camera effect apps for the camera. So now here is an idea...since the motorola xoom has a stock camera app implemented on the tablet to run both the front camera and a switch to use the rear camera....wouldn't it be possible as a theory to use a plug and play external usb webcam with the archos tablet and install the motorola xooms camera app instead of the archos camera app to use to switch between the front camera and usb camera (being as a rear camera)?
does anyone know where I can get the motorola xoom camera app to download? I would like to try it myself if I can get a hold of that app and just by a cheapo plug and play cam for 6 bucks if no one else is willing to try it...

An app is not a driver. A driver basically is the interface between the hardware and the app. When an app interacts with hardware, it does so through the driver. That way a vendor can build hardware however they want, as long as they provide a driver that conforms to pre-established specifications so that the software provider can access it with standard commands. That's why the idea of a camera with built in drivers doesn't make sense. The software would not know to address the camera through the USB port. It needs a driver to address which would in turn address the hardware. Support for devices like thumb drives is built into the operating system, so you don't need a driver.
As has been pointed out, they don't have drivers preinstalled; rather they use protocols that are supported by the host operating system (Windows, Mac, etc) out of the box. The type of "plug and play" webcams you're talking about rely on the the universal WDM in Windows along with such protocols or frameworks as DirectShow, TWAIN, etc.
The point is, the host OS has to know how to talk to those plug-and-play webcams, not the other way around. So in the case of the Archos tablet, it would have to have the same support baked into it at the driver level. Which it doesn't.
So unless you're going to reverse-engineer those protocols and write your own Android driver, it's not gonna happen.
In the case of the Motorola Xoom camera app (or the camera app for any other device/phone for that matter), it's specifically coded to the camera chip used in that device, and has no chance of working with an external webcam. Just like it wouldn't work for the camera in my Evo phone, or anything else besides the Xoom. The only chance would be if it was a device that used the exact same camera chip hardware, but the chances of that are slim. Even devices made by the same manufacturer, such as the HTC Evo and the HTC Droid Incredible, use two different camera chips and drivers.
But.. if your usb camera is working with opensource linux drivers (like uvc driver) there is a high chance that it will work on android if someone compiles the missing kernel modules (aka drivers) like I did for dvb devices. AND THEN.. someone has to write an extended camera app which supports selecting different cameras
any advancements with this issue?
I have an archos 80 g9 8gb. I want to plug in my Sony video camera using a firwire to USB cable and an USB to micro adapter. I then want to use my tablet to broadcast on ustream.com. I am in a paranormal group, I use a night vision camera, therefore I need to figure out a way to do this. We currently use an apple laptop that constantly needs to be plugged in. Being able to use the tablet for this would a much better solution for a few reasons.
Has anyone found/made any drivers?

I am in a similar boat as a few others here. I want to switch over to an Android tablet in my truck, but it's pretty large and the need of a rear view / back up camera is a must. During my past 48 hoursearch this is the most useful, and encouraging info that I could find. I am not a coder, but those who are can probably work with the source code I found on this site. I hope this helps us all. Maybe with the release of ICS the difficulty usb hosting for webcams won't require that much effort. Have a look

Just bought one of these off the net for the missus so ill be active around these threads as well. Personally i have a xoom this will be like my second to flash the heck out of lol but as I've been reading about these i have a couple small questions
1. Is the sd card working on stock rom so i can flash customs or will an update to 3.1 be required like the xoom?
2. Does the usb port work as host out of the box?
3. Whats the general stable oc you guys are achieving?
I have tried to search these but some are hazy on the specs or they are outdated

Fastest claimed speed is 1.64ghz, stable closer to 1.5.
SD card does work on stock, actually is required for flashing. As yet you can't flash from on board only external.
USB seems to work for some devices not others depending on whether you use the full size USB or the mini. Look on the market for USB mount all, you do need fat32 not ntfs though
Anyone want to contradict any of this?

Yes USB host [the fullsize USB not the mini] works out of the box. If your USB device requires power though - like some external HDD's - it may not work as there might not be enough power draw.
The mini USB is for the connection to your computer and SDK/ADB/general File transfer use - along side the Acer USB driver install [so make sure you've got the Acer USB driver installed on the computer(s) you plan on using to push files to the tab though mini-USB].

Yeh as i said im well advised due my xoom on rooting and android adb, drivers (not being a know it all smart azz) just those couple q got me thinking.. Thanks for a second opinion seems very similar to xoom. Shame how host cant produce 5v at 500ma it wouldnt be to hard for them to up the lousy 3.7v it seems they are running now

You can use internal for flashing if you're using thors latest recovery.

Hi all, first of all I kindly ask u to be patient with me cos I'm not a developer but rather a newbie... but really I didn't know where to ask for help ! Well, I'm still going mad after one year almost since I bought my Samsung J5, cos apparently there's NO WAY I can make Windows XP recognize it as a MTP device. Ah please don't ask me to use another PC or to upgrade to another Windows version cos for several reasons I don't want and I can't (by now). I must use THAT pc to connect my phone if possible. No WIFI, thanks.
Well, still searching thru forums for hints etc and I tried out everything I could find to date: I installed the mtp drivers mtppk12.exe, I also tried to install the Microsoft User Mode Driver Framework stuff, no luck. Everytime I plug my phone, the pc suddently detects it as "digital camera". So that nasty window pops up asking which programs to use to load pics etc. And if I access it as a volume, what I can see and do with its content is very limited as u know.
I tried to play with the hardware wizard, there's apparently no way to have the phone seen as mtp. I even tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers above, or to uninstall the various USB hubs and devices... nope. Oh I also tried to install the Samsung USB drivers for Mobile phones, still no luck. I NEVER get any errors or warnings though and no yellow question marks... just my pc insists to see it as a ptp device !!! And of course my phone is SET as MTP, not PTP. I tried to switch between those repeatedly. Even to remove the SD, to turn it off... no way.
Oh one detail... by reading somewhere I suspect that Windows Media Player must be installed ? I don't want it and don't want to install more ehr junk (read: unneded stuff, KIES, etc) IF possible. Or is it really strictly needed ?
Another interesting detail... always reading somewhere, it looks that, those lucky people who finally achieved to have their phones detected as mtp (no matter which model) under XP, have always this file present: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\wpdusb.sys
Well I have NOT that file, even after having installed the packages mentioned above ! Where does it come from ??
I'm even ready to get my hands dirty, to play with the registry, I don't care... just don't ask me to change that PC lol or to install more junk stuff (if possible).

SO first of all make sure that USB Debugging is enabled on your phone. (Settings>Developer Options)
Make sure that samsung usb drivers are installed You can find them here
When you plug your device in, in status bar it should say transferring images via USB. Click on that balloon and choose "Transfering media files"
One more thing that is recommended is use the original Samsung USB cable.
If this still doesn't work PM me and i will investigate further.

I have no idea if it works, but try to enable usb-debbuging in Developer Options (tap build number 7 times to enable Developer Options in About phone).
Im on cm12.1 and when i connect my phone to PC there appear a notification where i can choose Media device (MTP), Camera (PTP) and charge only.
I remember that in past sometimes windows (win 7) was recognizing my phone as PTP too, but i dont remember how i fixed it, probably switching from notification from actual to MTP, i dont remember.
As an alternative, try services like http://web.airdroid.com/ (you need to install app on phone) for transfering files, but personally i dont think i trust that kind of services.
You can try to install Windows Media Player crap and see if thats the problem, if is working.
I would like you to tell me through PM or in the off-topic thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-j5/how-to/ot-one-galaxy-j5-off-topic-thread-thread-t3461384 ) why you use win xp, why you dont wanna update, i wanna see your opinion about it.

So, what changed by installing these apprently "better" drivers and nothing else ?
Finally my PC seems to recognize my phone as a MTP device ! But things are still far from working (by now).
Namely:
Upon connection, no, the phone status bar does not show any "transferring images" or "transferring files"... it's a J5, it just says connected as MTP (vs. PTP)
Windows now says New Hardware detected, Samsung Mobile MTP device WOW
The only difference if I enable the USB debug option being, an additional device gets recognized and listed in the hardware named SamsungAndroidPhone / Samsung ADB Interface
But there's a problem... during installation of the MTP device (listed in Hardware as Samsung mobile USB composite device), I get an error, saying "cannot find the required section inside the INF file" !!!
Still no "?"s or "!"s listed in the hardware though.
And obviously, my Samsung is still NOT accessible as a Volume as it should be...

Thanks. As I already told Telepracity, often I rather noticed the OPPOSITE suggestion, but I tried. The only difference being that if I do, I see an additional device (Samsung ADB or alike) detected and mounted by Windows. What apparently "moved" something was installing these other Samsung USB drivers I was suggested to
Im on cm12.1 and when i connect my phone to PC there appear a notification where i can choose Media device (MTP), Camera (PTP) and charge only.

What a pity... so they dropped the UMS protocol aswell. TOO bad. What I really can't understand and agree on is... "alternative" OSs should really fill those voids more or less deliberately imposed by the big companies for some obscure and dirty plans against users' interests, not following them instead ! Oh well. But luckily enough, I noticed that MANY ppl share my thought here and there, that dropping UMS for MTP was a really debateable move. Sigh.
You can try to install Windows Media Player crap and see if thats the problem, if is working.

What windows media player version do you have installed on your system?
If 11, then i would suggest you to try disconnecting the phone, uninstalling any current drivers for the phone, then reinstall Windows Media Player 11 again. Install the drivers/ software for the phone from the manufacturer’s website and then re-connect the phone. The settings will be detected automatically and then check whether the issue is resolved.

Well no the matter is, I really have NO Media Player installed and if there was one initially (I don't remember lol) I had surely uninstalled it together with most M$ crap or unused programs. Just, I dunno why I must have a WMP installed at any cost to access an MTP device... ok I could even try in the worst scenario...
But clearly my XP configuration misses something in oder to be instructed on HOW to use/interact with MTP devices. Now at least, with the USB drivers u suggested me (note, the previous, not working ones were from manufacturer's site !!!) it can tell it is an MTP device, while before it was only seen as PTP (even if the phone was set as MTP). But it still can't find the proper entry inside the INF file to correctly manage such devices, it seems. I know this is going to become a matter for experts lol perhaps for too much experts... I think I shall soon give up and use another PC or laptop connected to the LAN for that purpose. Just, for various convenience reasons I was much handier for me if I could use that PC with XP instead. Dont' worry. Really I see the matter is getting too troublesome and I'm giving up. Thanks

Try to install wmp because in the microsoft answer website there is a same guy that faces the INF problem and he fixed it updating wmp.
Yes,this is the problem in windows xp,if you install windows media player mtp will work in xp.

Thanks for insisting so much about WMP11... eventually I convinced myself there weren't any easier (read: more
"elegant" or clean) workarounds. The drivers and files needed in order for XP to access MTP are simply all there.
Microsoft never thought to release them in a standalone package. Apparently neither MS MTP drivers nor
manufacturer's USB drivers are essential or needed at all, unless one is a developer. After having tried out every possible combinations, checked the files installed, repeated the procedures, etc HERE is the exact list of things (apparently) needed to have a MTP device recognized under Window XP. I'm also publishing this list hoping it may turn out useful to somebody else in the future, one never knows...
1. Installing Microsoft's MTP drivers (MTPPK12) SERVES NO PURPOSE here
2..Installing Samsung USB drivers also serves NO PURPOSE here (unless one wants to use additional features
as perhaps ADB and access the phone modem etc.)
3. Microsoft User Mode Driver Framework IS NEEDED ! Cos there are some files installed which are essential
like wudfrd.sys (NOTE: chances are u don't even need to install this package if u install WMP11 throughfully
cos apparently a similar file is installed but only during a vanilla WMP11 installation, keep reading)
4. If u don't need or don't want WMP11, u can safely install it just partially. I could manage to install WMP11 only
partially. The original self extracting archive must therefore be opened as an archive, and ONLY the
wmfdist11.exe needs be installed (of course, if one wants a full installation, he's advised
to do so, and in that case he can PERHAPS avoid to install the Microsoft User Mode Driver Framework, I
didn't check this option)
5. I can confirm... in my case at least, different USB cables make no difference. And the fact of having USB DEBUG
enabled on the phone has the sole effect of making an additional ADB device being detected under Windows
(for developers) and in that case perhaps u still need to installl Samsung's USB drivers.
Voilà ! As I plugged my phone, it got recognized as MTP suddently. I didn't even need to modify any .INF files
by hand for adding my device's USB ID and such things. And it can now be accessed as a volume.

I managed to make recognized my S5 by installing WMP 11 like stated above BUT i cannot copy/view any media files from my Galaxy S5 phone. I tried many cables with no luck. ElenaXX's post was extremely helpful but I couldn't access media files on phone eventhough recognized successfully.
Note: Everytime you change USB mode from Developer Options, it installs additional ADB devies again and again, and modem.
