Tether to or from your HTC Thunderbolt? What have you read about it?
Also are you stock or rooted on both devices

Im rooted on the thunderbolt, but not on the xoom. I know i have to do bluetooth tethering, but i dont know how to do that on my xoom or my laptop. I would like to be able to use both at the same time.

ok no problem but why didn't you just google this info... Not trying to be a hard ass but just so you know these forums are helpful but people like to see a little effort made to at least help themselves...
Now with that said what rom are you using on your Thunderbolt since my boy has one and BAMF I believe comes with android tether on it.. If not a quick google search for wifi tether - comes up with this
Now you download and install that to your phone and turn it on and it will act as a hotspot which you then connect your Xoom too.
Now second choice - a quick google search of tablet tethering brought up PDAnet - which is on the market and tells you how to set it up. Now there is a twist with them since bluetooth tethering is tricky and you have to restart your device to get it working after initially connecting and disconnecting.
Ok third choice for you laptop - Download PDAnet from there website for laptops and then download PDANet from Android Market, its different than PDANet Tablet
Hope that all helps and like I said for future reference probably any question you have has been asked already... hit up google first for your answer before posting in here... No disrespect just trying to help
Edit: That version of Wifi tether also uses Bluetooth tethering... but you must turn on bluetooth tether first prior to pairing devices...

i did google it

ok well I hope my answers help you... I have an Evo so its basically the same phone... I have laid out the steps for you too try... Wifi tethering is quite easy... If I may ask I know sometimes you search the wrong thing and its frustrating but what did you enter to find out how to tether you phone to your Xoom...

Good luck

My laptop will connect to the phone, but the wifi xoom wont find it. Something to do with the xoom wont reconize an ad hoc network? But the link you posted for the android tethering worked. Thanks

Tethering to the Xoom on an ad-hoc requires you to root and then replace some system files on the Xoom.

I have never had a problem connecting to my Thunderbolt (CM7, stock kernel) with my Xoom over WiFi, rooted or when it was stock. If you have CM7 just turn on tethering in the CM settings menu and you're good to go, if not, then this info is probably useless.

[Q] No DUN no ADHOC rant.....Honeycomb 3.1?

So all of our phones with Wifi hotspot features create an ADHOC connection which Honeycomb does not support. Same goes with Bluetooth, no DUN. Google what the hell? Ya ya,carriers this and carriers that but what about people paying for hotspot features on the phone. I have customers that I need to setup to pair with the TF but it seems nothing will work without rooting and that can be phone specific. So the TF is great as long as you are close to a WIFI connection is supports?
If I'm missing something someone please fill me in.

Are you rooted?
Are you simply pairing or using another app on your phone?
Can you run through your connection steps?

But why would they do this knowing what the phones support?
~DC
I am using the hotspot feature on my Evo, and I've been tethering to it at work since the day I got my Transformer. I'm not doing anything special, just turning on the hotspot and letting the TF connect. Now, my Evo is rooted with a ROM that "unlocks" the hotspot functionality so I'm not paying extra, and I'm not using the Wireless Tether app, but it's the same concept.

The hotspot feature on your ROM is supporting a true wifi connection and not peer to peer adhoc. I can't always root customers phones.
~DC
I may be misunderstanding how it works, but this isn't a wireless tether baked into the ROM, it's the built-in Sprint hotspot feature that I'm using, just unlocked so I don't have to pay extra. If someone was paying for the hotspot feature on Sprint, they wouldn't need root, but maybe this is only the case with Sprint's implementation.
i was able to do both wifi and bluetooth tethering. took me a while to figure out, (since i've never done it before, less due to the difficulty of doing it)
assuming the phone supports Bluetooth tethering, it should always work.
I have a DroidX and I can tether using the built in stock Hotspot feature or with Bluetooth. However, I can't tether using an ad hoc connection because I get an error stating that the device doesn't support ad hoc connections...
So, it is definitely device specific and it will be something the carriers remove as many report being able to do so with root (my device is rooted and I can't connect via ad hoc - although, I haven't d/l or tried out the pdaNet app).
I will also add that the bluetooth tethering has worked MUCH better than the wifi - easier/faster to connect, runs pretty fast, and my phone doesn't overheat as much....
Works fine with my evo. The Evo has proper infrastructure wifi hotspot.
Maybe the users need to update their phones?
I went into a store to try a tf and there was no internet so I turned on my WiFi hotspot on my sgsII and it worked perfectly fine, not sure if that's the same as you're asking but that works.

a lot of clarification
Hi all,
I need your help, understanding ... well everything about wifi/TF/WM6.5/adhoc and whatever the other connection is?
I don't think of myself as a noob, but to be honest I'm lost with the wifi on the TF. So here it goes: I have TF and HD2. Under WM6.5 I can't get the TF to see the shared internet through the "wifi router" application on the phone. But then I run a custom Desire HD ROM and this one (can't remember the application) shares and gives access to the TF?!?!
First off, which is which? Which is adhoc and which is infrastructure? And what is the difference (sorry i did look on the internet, but that got me confused even more because I could not see any difference). Are you saying that a standard (not rooted Android) will have the same problem? I was thinking of switching to an android phone so that I can get the easy sharing option, but if I have to root a brand new phone????
Any help will be appreciated,
rio
Easy way to tether off a rooted phone.
Install one of the older versions of wireless tether that supports bluetooth.
Turn on the bluetooth DUN on wireless tether.
Hit ok when it asks to turn on Bluetooth and make discoverable.
On the transformer go to settings-wireless-bluetooth
Scan for your device and pair.
Once paired you should see a little wrench next to your device, click on it
Under Profiles, it should show tethering with a checkbox. Click this and in a few seconds Wireless tether should buzz its connected and off you go.
I've been able to tether my transformer like this since out of the box.
Edit - BTW I've tried this with PDAnet and other non rooted tehtering programs, and I couldn't get it to work with those options. Just FYI
the difference between ad-hoc and infrastructure is the way devices communicate.
infrastructure is kinda like the way we send messages via the post office. we send it to a central place, then it figures out how to deliver the message. this is how true routers operate
ad-hoc is peer-to-peer. imagine passing notes back in elementary school.
( Do you like me [yes] [no] )
some phones comes with a tethering app without having to root, but this typically requires you to pay extra fee to your carrier ($30 for sprint)
if you don't want to pay that, then you have to root your phone to either get a rom that already supports infrastructure mode, or download an app that does. [ ie Wifi Tether ]

Got Wireless tethering to work But....

Ok so I got wireless tethering to work form my rooted Epic 4g to my galaxy tab 10.1 and its pretty cool. I did it with wireless tethering version 3. The only thing is that at first i couldn't get it to work because of the authentication once I turn off the encryption on my Epic it worked perfectly and connected right away. But what I don't get is why it doesn't work with the password if anyone can give me some advise why this is happening it would be cool, Thanks.
Strange, I tether all the time without issue. Should be possible. Are you using an app or built-in settings for tethering.
I got the app version (V3 is the only one that works) . I mean it works,..just not with the password on.
I use wifi tethering with my samsung galaxy phone with tmobile. you should try changing setting in build in tethering app and see if this works. I use 'quick settings' free app from market for quick access to wifi hotspot settings.
I have this problem too, it tethers fine but whenever it comes to things requiring password (like email logins) it rejects the password.
can any one who doesnt have this problem share which software they use for tethering?
how did you get tethering to work? i have tried the wpa_supplicant hack but the wifi drops every 10 seconds. what rom are you running & what supplicant file did you use?
It only works right with wireless tethering app version 3. Apparently if you have the rom that has it built in you shouldnt have any problems.
This is what i used http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I use bluetooth tethering fron my Win Mobile Treo Pro running wmwifirouter. I got tired of trying to root and do the wpa supplicant thing. Android needs to support adhoc wifi out the box across the board. So ridiculous really by now.
Still Cannot Tether
Ok...so Im still on an older phone ( Droid Eris ) but it's rooted running Gingerbread and the wireless tether v.2.07 works great with my laptop but wont work at all with the Galaxy Tab? I really don't understand this. I have tried everything from leaving it completely open to setting up all the appropriate authentication and access control. I tried the link in the thread for 3.0 and even select the Desire..which I think is the basis of the rom I am on...and just got errors in the log.
Anyone else having these issues? Not sure why it works fine on the laptop but not the tablet?
thanks
I am running v 2.0.7 on a myTouch. When I wireless tether with access control on I can check Gmail, but browser will not get websites. If I turn off AC, then browser works OK.

I think that 2.07 is ad-hoc only and honeycomb doesn't support ad-hoc. (someone correct me if I'm wrong). There are a few threads around here somewhere where you can replace/edit a file that allows ad-hoc support. As to your other question, I use Wifi tether-pre11 and it works without issue. I'll link it to you. Make sure you change "device profile" under settings in the app to correspond with your device. I had troubles with the app until I set the device profile to my device. Depending upon your luck, you may have to try a few different pre-release files on wifi tether 3.0 to find the right one. Like I said, pre11 works great for my Epic, but your device may be different. Just don't use the top one (test2) as I recall seeing that its meant for Samsung devices.

Many THANKS for the help!
Just to add a data point, I hadn't tried tethering my Tab to my Thunderbolt until I read this thread. I am running Wireless Tether 2.08pre. I set up access control and also enabled wifi encryption. I used it for about 20 minutes without any problems. That includes email, surfing the internet, and YouTube.
I too can tether the GT 10.1 with my HTC Thunderbolt using Wifi Tether, but am having trouble with the Samsung Droid Charge. Anybody get the Charge to tether successfully? TIA!

You have to look up on how your phone does its wifi hotspotting.
I have a galaxy S and when I set up the wifi, kindle fire works perfectly fine from it.
Search around here, someone had mentioned an app that will share it as infrastructure and not adhoc, which I believe is what you would need.
That app would be wifi tether if you are on Android

I can connect to my Inspire 4g running CM7.
Try some different ROMS and see which ones will let you?
I am having trouble using the web browser with my Droid RAZR's wifi hotspot on verizon but book downloading, app downloading, and even prime video streaming seems to work fine. Not sure why the web browser doesn't.
Using my gf droidx and wifi tether I can finally get it to connect but then abruptly met with a verizon wallgarden page to sign into mobile hot spot.

What about using a service like Dropbox? Upload a file from one device, and download it to another. If we are talking about video files however, that might not be practical, and then I'd suggest doing it via a PC (if available). I'm not aware of any apps at the moment that allow sharing of filesystems across devices. I'm sure there are possibly ways with things like SSH, but that might be annoying to setup for the average user.

So, without internet, it's highly likely you wouldn't have WiFi on either tablet, how would you network the tablets together without a network?! One of your tablets would have to be a Hotspot to provide the IP address to the other (and I'm not sure about the software available to do this). Even then, you'd need some underlying software that was able to mount/read the sdcard from the other device.
If you did have WiFi, then it's likely you have Internet, in which case you've just answered your own question!
Not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying it seems to be a little impractical for the times you don't have internet, in which case be organized enough to transfer files in advance.

USB tethering?

Looking for a way to USB tether my Iconia tablet through my android phone..
before anyone gives me the "just use wifi" speech.. I cant due to where I work.. absolutely ZERO wifi allowed.. they have wifi sniffers. 3G is fine.. sooo need a way to tether via USB.
Both my devices are rooted.
I would love this as well. Could always use bluetooth dun though right?
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
nope.. BT freq's are monitored too.. can really only use USB.
I just can't understand why this is such an obstacle.. figure something like this would be easy to do.
Very interested in finding a way to do this as well.
I haven't test it, but in the Thor ROM 14.2 there is under "Tethering & Mobil Hotspot" > USB-Tethering. Maybe you try that ROM.
Tried this with my DROIDX and the built in 3G hotspot app which has a USB tethering option. No go.
Pdanet is my usb tetherer of choice. Right now I don't think it's supported but they may get that together and it seems something more feasible as android becomes a legit OS.

I wish PDAnet would soften up and just do stuff for root. Their iphone app is only available to jailbreakers so you'd they wouldn't be so up tight.
Well after a few days of using tether this way.. Ive figured out that most apps wont recognize USB tethering.. I cant get Google Talk to sign in. Google Market seams to work fine though. Seems like some things will tell you that there is no internet connection but still work.. some just wont.

just wanna help out people with problems at wifi tethering :)

hey guys this is my first posting so be gentle...
i just wanna share something that might help people that has problems with tethering...
i have a rooted motorola photon 4g and i use it to tether wifi on my asus tf101 because i dont have internet at home... but after ICS ROMS came out, i usually switched roms coz i couldnt tether my wifi...i was using the regular wifi tether in the market at that time... but every time i try to connect to my tether i couldnt, it just says SAVED...and i already tried the fix that you should change the wpasupplicant2 but when im at work i couldnt connect to a normal wifi... ....then after lots and lots of reading and trying to solve my problem i saw an app that works great but its a little bit tricky coz you wont find it in the market that instant...
.... you only need to install this on the phone your gonna use for tethering...
.... for sprint carriers it is blocked on the market but here are the steps to get it....
... for other carriers just search for FOXFI (blue colored wifi tether app)
---------------- OR YOU COULD JUST GO TO FOXFI WEBSITE http://foxfi.com/bin THANKS TO dca09 FOR THE INFO ------------
what i did and you should do is....
1. on your phone go to the market and search for PDANET TABLET...
2. click PDANET TABLET and scroll down up to DEVELOPER
3. click VISIT WEBPAGE (then the browser would open)
4. scroll down and click DOWNLOAD VERSION 3.50
5. after download is done open PDANET and click WIFI TETHER MODE then you will be prompted to install FOXFI
6. install FOXFI and enjoy
- you could even create a wpa2 password for your own protection on this app -
- you could use either WIFI TETHER or BLUETOOTH TETHER -
did anyone already tried what i did? please let me know if it worked for you and what ROM are you using on your tf101
Pdanet Works, but I really prefer native tether that exists in Cm9 and AOKP. Never had an issue with it.
yeah me too...
yeah i liked that too... but did u installed and used foxfi tether??the blue one? i think its better coz i tried it on every rom
I was/will be there for you
FYI
Just to let you know that you can also use your browser to go to the FOXFI web site and download it from there (http://foxfi.com/bin). You'll have to enable install "Unknown sources" to install the .apk file.
It's a little easier and you'll have the .apk file for backup.
I use Wifi Tether for Root on my phone to tether to my transformer. I've never had need to go the other way since my tf101 is wifi only.
thanks man hehehe

I agree. Native tethering with on/off button on power widget in notification tray. Once network is saved, all it takes is one toggle of the button and boom, you are connected.

I just got my tf101 and so far haven't been able to connect wifi or blue tooth to my htc evo.
I can find it and it shows up as a paired device but I can't connect to it.
I installed the pda net and the foxfi and it appears to be working, but still can't get a signal or a menu/connection to my phone.
Any ideas?

what rom are you using?
"i just ...and i already tried the fix that you should change the wpasupplicant2 but when im at work i couldnt connect to a normal wifi."
How do you make the change to wpasupplicant2?
Damn....i was hoping the suplicant2 method would fix the adhoc issue in ics...i just picked up this tablet and havnt been able to get it tethered yet ....i have a tmobile vibrant rooted on froyo rom ... and still no dice.... even foxfi doesnt. So why would the suplicant2 tweak not work with your jobs wifi?...
Starting to look like i should downgrade to hc.... i really dont feel like messing with my phone with different roms...would rather tinker on the transformer
the app says it doesnt work with htc phones as they build some kind of security into it. and some moto phones wont work....
i also have a droid x and it works just not reliably.

thats because you need to undo what you did to the wpasupplicant2 in able to connect to normal wifi..thats my problem before...try FOXFI it wont mess up your wpasupplicant1 and 2 so you wouldnt bother to change anything..just reflash the rom you are using then use FOXFI..

if your using an htc phone thereis a lot of tethering apps out there that you could use.. or if you want to.. you could use PDANET for tethering via bluetooth or usb...
This does not work with my rooted NS4G running Bugless Beast. I have yet to find a solution to tethering my TF300T to my phone. Grrr.
