I was charging my phone will in the backgorunf downlaoded a gameloft game, and i touch the phone and its so hot i cant touch it for more than 5 seconds. Is this normal, should I exchange it.
Definitely not normal if it should burn you, I've been doing a lot of background downloads while charging the unit barely warms up but there is a warmer feel but if its burning then definitely not normal.
Ok i guess im exaggerating, but literally I couldnt touch the back for more than five seocnds before it hurts.
I only have that problem if the screen is on and something is active. nothing abnormal hogging the cpu?
A lot of electronic chips have operating tempatures range of upto 90C. Since there is no fan or ventilation on the s2 all the excess heat comes through the plastic case. So when the CPU is work at full speed getting hot is quite normal.
So if it burns you like touching the side of a freshly boiled kettle, then that would be something to worry about.
That said it should not get that hot if you are not using the CPU heavily like when playing a game.
This only happend to me when I played dungeon defender. So I wont play that game anymore. But in overall it doesnt get that hot

Now that is true multitasking!
Having been with 3 different S2's I can say that the heat profile on this phone has a VERY huge variance. The 2nd phone I had barely heat up playing any game and that includes dungeon defenders it was NOT any warmer than playing angry birds. Charging showed a battery temperature of something like 33-34c.
The 3rd phone I got charges to something lie 41-42c and runs significantly warmer even by just playing Dungeon hunter2 HD.
There was a mythical phone even that ran at 1.6Ghz overclocked and it ran cooler than stock, now that was some cool story!
I'll experience the same thing when playing live holdem poker... The temperature rise up to 49C..

finally i solved this problem using tegrak to set cpu speed to 200 min : 800 max
no heat any more
but i need to ask is it safe to change it in games only and return it normal all other times ??
I remember trying Google Earth with 3D buildings for a few minutes.
Phone heated up and scared the hell out of me. Never going to run that again.

Have anybody noticed that the phone gets very hot, when running a few select apps - but not all apps???
I have played a lot of games on the phone, and almost all Gameloft games without any problems, and the phone don't get to hot - it do heat up, but nothing thats worth any thought.
But yesterday i downloaded "Gangster" from Gameloft, and started playing that game. After just 5 minutes the phone got so hot, that i had to shut it down, because i was afraid of something melting internally.
I have played the game a couple of times, with the same result - which had led to uninstalling the game, because i'm just to afraid to damage the phone.
I have no other apps, that gets the phone so hot - not even remotely warm, so i'm suspecting "Gangster" to be coded badly or something like that... i'm not charging the phone, while playing - so it must be the game, thats running the phone 100%, which lead to overheating.
Any thoughts on that, anyone???...
Do the SGS2 have some sort of protection inside, so i'm overreacting - or should i just play on, without being so afraid to damage the phone???

I find out that Google Earth, after a while and with the 3D buildings on, also heats a lot the phone..
It seems some/many apps are heating up this phone, and some users have reported S2 going bad due to this heat. It would be nice if we can maintain a list of such apps in this thread....it would help us all know which apps to use cautiously!!

the only time my phone got that hot was when I was watching a longer flash stream in the browser. after a few minutes the (view from behind) left side of the camera became really hot so I quit the browser and left the phone alone until it settled itself.
Real football 2011 gameloft. Makes my touchscreen...untouchable!!
This is due software coding.. Some apps have both cores running at 100 % all the time..
Nice idea to list them all here and IF damage is possible to the device..

Download battery monitor off the market and monitor the temperature while playing these games. I've played a game that heat the battery up to 48c for a few hours and no harm was done, so I believe it has to be even hotter to make the GS2 go bad. Charging it while playing also makes it 5-8c hotter than usual.

In a small device like this, it's pretty hot. Burns my hand, lol
i can play plants vs zombie or grave defense hd while charging for a long time and it gets warm not hot as expected
Robo defense on the other hand will make the phone very uncomfortable once it freezes up

I haven't had a single phone that didn't warm up when i plugged into be charged
Battery temperature meters are great, for telling you the temperature of the battery. When this phone generates heat it isn't coming from the battery.
I have only had one game cause any significant heating, Bonzai Blast. It also chewed through the battery quickly. Removing the game removed the problem.
I had the phone feel warm in my pocket once at idle. Later that day I found that the AP Mobile app had downloaded 270 Mb that morning even though I wasn't using the widget. I put the widget on my home screen, changed the settings to never update, then removed the widget. Hasn't been a problem since.
I switched my SGS II off but forgot it in the car cradle.....
When I came back it was almost melting ....
Quickly downloaded the app "mobile deep freezer" and now I can use the SGS II as ice cube for my drinks ...

I notice mine gets hot where the camera is, and around the earpiece/top of the touchscreen when i'm browsing the internet without wifi, i.e, 3g or H.
Same here with the Gameloft HD games, screen is pretty much untouchable.
Stopwatch makes mine super hot.

robo defense for about 30 mins makes the back near the camera quite warm, but i hear this is expected? once the screen got very hot, but not done it since...
When gaming, it gets so hot that it makes me think "this should definitely not be this hot", I would categorize it as "an unusual amount of heat". It makes me afraid I'm going to melt something on the inside haha so I give it a break. I know it's hard to describe temperature over the internet but is yours getting uncomfortably hot?

Mine sometimes gets on the warm side, but the Nexus 10 has safeguards to prevent "dangerous" temps (your CPU clock will downclock in increments of 100MHz until the CPU gets cooler, and then spike back up to 1.7GHz; lowest I've seen it go was 800MHz).
Download Cooltool at play store and set up what you want to show as a floating widget. This is how I monitor my cpu, batt temp, ram, wifi strength etc. This way you can be more accurate in determining wether your device is too hot and if you should be worried.

Hey thanks a lot for that! but uhh how hot is too hot for the battery?
Mine gets really damn hot as well near the removable cover. I really pondered removing the cover and back and seeing if I can make vents in the back, with a screen, then I can remove that removable cover while gaming. It's most noticeable during Need for Speed most wanted.

It doesn't really bother me, per say, but I'm just worried that its going to mess it up, but at any rate good to know it's "normal"

Mine does that too. I have noticed that the case is starting to warp where the heat is most concentrated... Just to the left side by the power button. Between the power button and the camera. Almost like some glue came off and the casing is separating...

That's not good
I was using mines for google talk video chat and it got really hot. I checked the temps and it was at 91F.
Ok I did a test again and it went up to 105F. All this just by video chatting. Thats not normal!
Mines getting hot too just an hour of browsing the web and its extremely warm.

Why do you think that? It's perfectly normal for a chipset like this.
Its not just the top part thats hot like it should be. By holding it with my hands on the side you can feel the heat.

If you blast through the battery in a few hours with 3D gaming or the like the battery will get warm, too (40-50°C).
it was only like 20 minutes. I'm not saying the device getting warm isnt normal. I know that it is. However the first device i had did not get as hot as this.
The N10 is thin and very powerful so heat might be more noticeable. As long as it's "only" getting warm and not slowing down/stuttering in this state, there's nothing to worry about.
lol thats kinda the problem. the video keeps stuttering and freezing and so does the game....
everyone should be undervolting the nexus 10
this device can't even run at stock speeds for extended lengths of time without throttling due to high temperature...
it's easy to test, just run StabilityTest (search google play) and run the Classic Test... you'll eventually see your CPU throttle down from 1700MHz (mine goes down to 1400MHz every so often... i'd probably go down even more if i hadn't undervolted it)
therefore, undervolting it will help it run at stock speeds for longer
I noticed mine heating up for the first time. Don't play many games at the moment. Heated up quite a bit between camera and buttons just like others have mentioned. I was playing ingress when I first noticed. Also when I was just using browser to the ingress/Intel page. I was thinking it had to do with GPS but after reading other comments I guess CPU was working hard refreshing page.

How much is "super hot"?? Install the app called GS Battery Monitor and see the temperature of your battery. If it is more than 40 then it's something to worry. Or else you are good.

Seems pretty normal, screen is on, graphics are cranking, its an online game too right?
Best you can do is if you were to be rooted you could try underclocking to limit the CPU, or limit it to less CPUs, from getting that high so it doesn't produce as much heat, or really as easily.

My phone did the same thing. It got very unbearable to hold. My solution was to return the phone back to LG/Google for a refund.
Stock kernel? No wonder. Even mine gets hot after browsing. Fixed by installing a custom kernel.
I noticed while playing games such as Plague Inc. for more than 20 mins at a time, my Xperia Z gets quite hot.
Maybe it's because the case is glass that it feels more hotter than normal but sometimes it gets too hot that it's uncomfortable to hold in my hands so I have to exit the game and let it cool down for 5 minutes.
Anybody else have this happen to them?

OK, so what phone doesn't get hot after playing games? All phones get hot and tablets also don't worry about it unless the phone is sleeping and its hot.

There is throttling but it's barely noticeable. The only game that is sometimes affected by it is Rayman Jungle Run, out of all the games I tried.

I was watching a 720p 1.4gig episode of Spartacus last night.
Device got really hot & noticed some frame issues towards the end.
Was playing via MX player & SW encoding due to audio so Bravia wasn't running.
If you use MX Player you should enable the HW+ decoder in settings, it'll allow you to play nearly all video with HW and the audio with SW. Software video decoder is never a good idea.

If you have unlocked your bootloader, you should try DooMkernel. It lets you undervolt. It did make a difference, albeit a minor one. But then again, mine never gets very hot. The only time it does get hot is when it's charging and I try to run a heavy application. That is definitely normal. Also, the Snapdragon S4 Pro is notorious for high temperatures(as evident from the Nexus 4).
IF the phone gets over 48°C on the back side it start Trotthling!
Throw it in the freezer while you're doing your benchmarks, you'll squeeze a bit more out of it, or go get a job for a supermarket and do all your gaming in the walk-in freezer

Sony devices are well protected against overheating so dont worry.
I returned my XZ today after 5 hours of use yesterday.
The phone i had got extremely hot while just browsing the menus. I started the phone out of the box(battery was at 62%), ran trough the setup, added gmail, facebook & exchange. The phone was to hot to have next to the ear. Had some problems with exchange so the whole process tok about 30 minutes and the battery ended up at 23%.

Thats true, but it's due to the ****ty qualcomm mpdecision. On the Nexus 4 the overheating issue was fixed after turning it off.
Now that we can root, this should be doable on a personal basis.
That of course is not a fix by the components supplier nor by the manufacturer, but a fix none the less.

Hi,
I've been using G2 for the past one week. Within minutes of playing a game( `10 mins), the phone heats up a lot at the back where the camera is placed.
I dont even need to play high end games like NOVA 3. Just regular games like Candy crush, Cut the rope etc heats up my phone real bad.
It heats up so much that its impossible to touch it with your hand.
Please advice if anyone has faced this issue.

mine is not nearly hot enough that it's uncomfortable to hold. Just noticeable and a bit worrisome but no more than most devices I've had in the past.
If it gets so hot you burn your fingers then that's a big deal. But getting warm to hot is normal as far as I can tell. There are apps to check your temperatures. Install one and check the temp. Post your number here and let's see how hot it really is. In the mean time, don't hold your hand near the hottest spot while gaming.
Nearly all phones get warm while gaming, they don't really have a cooling system. As said before, measure the tempature, and see if it is truly something to worry over.

Close some app that u did`t use...

It happens to all phones...including the HTC One and the GS4 lol. I've experienced it myself so don't worry about it just lower the brightness and close other apps that are in cache while playing. :silly:
Might be a defective phone I have optimus g and optimus g2 and there the best phones made to date return get a new one probably just deffecrive brother in

Every smartphone I've owned, when gaming for a period of time...it gets HOT! No fan cooling system on phones. I had iPhones, S2, S2 skyrocket, Galaxy Note, HTC One...all gets HOT when gaming. Even my iPad2. As long as you're not getting first degree burns and the phone isn't melting, it is quite normal for it to get hot. But if you feel that something isn't right, go exchange it.
