Galaxy S2 refuses to charge and start - Galaxy S II General

Hi folks,
So here's the deal: my Samsung Galaxy S2 suddenly refused to charge and became very hot. I turned it off, took out the battery and it won't accept any new juice.
After I turned it off, it won't even start. So I have a battery that cannot be charged, and a Galaxy S2 that refuses to start. When connected, a battery icon with a triangle is displayed. Any ideas?
Should I try to get a new battery or is there any trick for this? I'd rather not send it away.
Cheers

It's pretty similar to this issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1114016

No one knows, huh? That doesn't bode well...

This is identical to my problem. To restart your phone. Take the battery out. Plug the phone in, wait a few seconds then put the battery back in. Imediately, press and hold the power button. The usb charging circuit is damaged. It needs a repair but will probably be replaced. A few of us had this problem.

Thanks for your reply! If that's the case, it's the first phone I've ever had since 1998 that has broken down.
I tried the method of starting it that you suggested, but it didn't work. I guess I have to send it back. Even though it's a great phone in other regards, I won't be buying a Samsung again.

Hm, it suddenly decided to start again for some reason and now I can charge the device while it's turned off. But when I try to charge it when it's turned on, it just becomes super hot and loses power instead of gaining it.
Can it be a software issue? It's really weird, since my SGS2 can be charged while it's turned off but not when booted.
Cheers

Hi there i have the same problem with mine too, do you flash any rom in it or kernel?
I guess its a problem with the kernel or rom you have flashed, mine have the same problem, but you can put it charging in the usb cable in the computer and let it stay there for a whyle, then you have to try to boot it up by using the 3 keys (power+home+vol up) it will boot in recovery mode then you ask it to reeboot and install an updated kernel or reflash the rom, while the device is on, do not put it off, because if you do it you will have the same problem to put it on again, but when its on it charges normally.
I have changed mine for a new one but the problem i am sure it was the things i flashed it. I was using another kernel to install and root the device and again put the original stock kernel in the device to get rid of the yellow triangle, but that came up with that problem. I even dowloaded root explorer in order to reset the battery status bin (you have to be rooted to do this) and reboot the phone but with no avail. The other you have to do this is install CWM MANAGER V1.80 MY KERNEL CF-ROOT 4.0 MY ANDROID VERSION 2.3.3 BASEBAND i9100UHKE2 and now note this the stock kernel was the uhke4 but the kernel i put it it is [email protected]#2 COMPILATION NUMBER: GINGERBREAD.UHKE4
Note: i dont know if it will work for you, i am using a stock rom from samsung. If you do not flash anything its better to return the device or even you have flashed it buy a usb jig and reset the counter and find for the repair, they have to fix that for you.
I hope that have provided you some help.
best regards

Happend to me after installing an over clock thing i uninstalled it and it worked fine

thats what i have said but try to update the kernel and try it mine was uhke4 and now im using xwke7 rooted and worked like a charm all working perfect now, just the problem with the yellow triangle on boot, besides that nothing else even it improved battery life and gps works even better .
hope i have been usefull.

@OP- Go to Service center. Don't waste your time by doing this and that. I am having the same problem, though freak me did some experiment with it. You will get replacement/repaired as it's inside warranty very much.
And don't try any freak method with the new one.
Regards.

Man, better sending your phone to service center before damaging it more.

Have you got the replacement?????????????

Thanks for all the replies. Like I mentioned earlier, I'd rather not send my Galaxy S2 away to a service center, even though there obviously is something wrong with it. I'd be without it for weeks and my S2 is like the Ring for Gollum
I can still charge it now when the device is turned off. But whenever I try to charge it while it's turned on, it just becomes super hot and loses power. I'm starting to think that the battery is damaged, and not the actual device.
Anyway, I just rooted it... Couldn't resist, so I bet I can't even send it for service now without trying to unroot the bugger

so if we take it that anything thats not needed is a waste of time ? like being here ? well, that first line about service center just make me think . Why would the OP post here, because he's not going to a service center..looks like it. it could have been he would though. I just dont like that advice myself. here, they wouldn't do nuttin for me if i brought the phone.
I knew a few that a few years back had phones for repair, they don't replace them, they do some awful repair, and it doesnt work afterwards. second, if after using a phone a whole lot I wouldn't trust them providers with it for weeks . What I mean is for some, its like sending a diary for inspection and approval. Not being VIP nor secret, but ya pwn biznizis ya pwn bizniz.
there must be something to it with the software/firmware, as mentioned a bit below

well, I tried cyanogenmod, and whatever kernel/modem/baseband etc... so! it is like version ki8+ki4+ki3 if that makes any sense . brand new sgs2 gt-i9100 int. version in white. battery ran down to 6%, microUSB thru PC or charger didnt do nuttin, then i turned it off, and looks like its charing. must be a BUG!!
gotta fix that. or get a bigger battery..and then fix that
any1 else having problems with cyanogenmod ? probably im running a wrong kernel, or a wrong 'something'.
does cf-root conflict with rom manager, if so, what to do anyway ? what rom/kernel version should one use with cyanogenmod 7.1.0 RC1 ? how many 'roms' are prone for this no-charge-issue ? time for another rom maybe? cm7rc1 report version 2.3.7
I can also confirm that the phone does get a little warmer during the no-charge-issue. Would want to get one of those colored alu covers, but not sure it would do much better in coming cold winter.
whatever is causing the issue, thats really stupid! what kind of problem to have..put that on the messenger machine 'my phone has gone off to charging at the moment, it'll be back later'.
questions is - what to flash ?

My Samsung Galaxy S stopped responding so had a replacement sent over - Orange replaced it with a S2 - however I struggled with it for hours before ordering a second replacement - charged on first go then wouldn't charge again - so again fiddled about for ages. Eventually took SD card out and now it works fine bloody annoying.

2 phone in 2 weeks the yellow triangle
The first SGS2 I got the second time I went to charge it the Yellow Triangle with the Astrix symbol came up with in 2 weeks the batter was over heating and only holding a charge for 4 hours. I exchanged for a new SGS2 and it has been 3 days the same Yellow Triangle with astrix has come up. I am going to get my money back and use my old phone which is unfortunate cause I really like the SGS2. What is the issue with this? is this really a connection issue?

Take the phone back and get a replacement as it a very good handset.

Samsung Say's
This Yellow Triangle with the exclamation point in it is suppose to show up when the battery is completely dead and only when completely dead until the phone has enough juice to be turned on then it goes away. It should not be related to any other problem with the phone. If you get the yellow triangle when you still have power to the phone then you need to take it in. This will lead to over heating the battery and trust me the phone gets extremely hot. Then you will not be able to charge the phone.
If the battery is hot take it in.
If the Yellow triangle only shows up when the battery in completely dead and then goes away a little after you charge it your phone is fine.
This is what Samsung and it's tech support said to me.

Phone stuck on USB/charging... very weird

Hey there. I have my Galaxy S II (GT-I9100) for about a month, and since a couple of days ago it has been behaving very weirdly about USB and charging.
First of all, the phone thinks it has USB connected at all times. When I go to the settings menu try to enable mass storage it says USB is already connected, even though it isn't!!!
Sometimes when I start the phone it goes to that USB Kies screen and says "connected", when absolutaly no cables are connected AT ALL!!!
When I turn the cell off, remove the battery and plug it back in, without turning the phone on, the recharging battery icon appears, but blinks with a drained battery icon with a yellow exclamation sign and a thermometer which I sincerely have no idea what that means.
It also takes ages to recognize the power charger or when I really connect the USB cable. And finally, when I take them off, it also takes a while to "perceive" they're off and remove the charging lightning from the battery icons.
PRETTY PLEASE, SOMEONE HELP ME OUT, as I don't have time to take the phone to service, and didn't really want to do that
Thanks!!!
This has also happened to me and loads of other SGS2 users! Although usually it only happens sporadically and not constantly. It seems that it's a bad soldering job or dust/dirt has gathered in the microUSB port. You might be able to fix it, if you're *really* careful.

Last night my phone wouldn't even start charging, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. With the smallest screwdriver I could find, I carefully 'lifted' the tiny PCB in the USB jack while blowing in at the same time. Sure enough, some sand particles fell out, and I haven't gotten carmode'd in nearly 13 hours now. Previously it would do it once every 15 minutes. So far so good, it seems.

Thanks for the help... but what is PCB? Is it the connector inside the "hole"?
Tried that and it stopped thinking USB was connected the whole time... on the other hand, it doesn't detect when I connect the USB cable

You can't talk on plural when you only point out one thread. And I've read that, but it isn't the same as my phone doesn't go in "car mode".
My phone's problem only resembled a problem JaX3RiR briefly mentioned in the middle of the thread.
I tried googling it before posting anything anywhere, but couldn't find anything useful.
Please don't try to look like a smartass like that and embarrass yourself. If you got nothing to add to the thread, it's best if you sit out of it. It's much more appreciated when helpful people like JaX3RiR post...

Thanks mate, I sent mine today as well... I hope they act the same with me, as I'm afraid customer service around here always tries to incriminate the user not to use the warranty...

I'm pretty sure you have the same problem. Sometimes Vlingo starts, sometimes phone thinks its charging, when trying to boot it shows battery image and won't boot, can boot only recovery and do restart from there.
Get of the high horse when people are trying to help you.
Are you sure you didn't connect USB cable upside down or bended USB port with the cable?
I have no idea what Vlingo is, and obviously I didn't connect the USB cable upside down. I don't think I bended the port with the cable since it still recognizes the cable for charging or booting and going directly into Kies mode, for example.
I am not on any high horse when people try to help me, as you could see my response towards the guys above. Your post wasn't sounding helpful at all, you were just sounding like "hey, you dumass noobie, don't open a new thread for yourself, check the forums first".
By the way, I also took a look at that thread you posted before posting mine, but I have no idea what is "car mode" on my phone...
Sorry if I sounded rough. I thought it is similar issue, so I posted link to longer thread. I had this issue myself.
Peace. Let us know what the service say .
This happened to me one week ago while on holiday....that temp indicator while charging plus the other stuff you mention....
Plus the phone went into flight mode and won't come out....
Got home and did a reset and phone now doesn't recognise sim card...

Hello,
Had the same problems aswell, only mine had a bunch of other problems aswell:
When I shut down my mobile it restarts itself and then shows a yellow exclamation mark with an tempgage. Only way to turn on my phone is to connect it with the charger, turn of my phone again, remove the charger and then the phone turned itself on again but without the temp gage.
My phone also thinks its charging when it is not, and when I am actually charging it, its not charging.
Also my PC does not recognize my phone so I am not able to update it.
I have also sent my phone for a repair, I will keep you guys posted.
greets from the netherlands
Yep, mine only got fixed by going into service. It got its mainboard warranty switched.
T- Mobile sent me a replacement phone
They seemed to know the symptoms when I explained what was happening
Same fault for me. Mainboard replaced, works fine now.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
How did you guys get it fixed? Did you have to ship the phone out somewhere? How long did you have to wait to get it back? What was the process?
Thanks.
Mine is going to be repaired in two weeks.
I was the 8th SGS2 since tuesday which came in the repair center.
The repair guy said it is a manifacturing fault.
The phone gets hots, and outside temperature is cold, so it makes moisture in the phone.
This cause the phones power management to get fu up (SGS2 has a small battery inside of it, and that gets fu up). Only fix is replace hardware, but 9 of 10 times Samsung gives the fault to the customer. They say it has water damage and can't be fixed in warrenty...
I'm going to write a huge article about it, and I hope it will get published by a lot of site's soon. Phones he admitted having the problem: SGS1, SGS2 and SGSN.
I charged my GS2 2x by USB and it's discharged faster than by the sector
The USB power isn't enough for charge up the GS2 correctly
Are you guys suffering from rapid battery discharging, i have all of the above symptons but my battery drains within hours...I`ve even bought a brand new battery off ebay that is exacly the same issues... I`d like to send it back to O2 but i`ve rooted and flashed custom firmware...

Dead Nexus S

Hi guys,
Tried searching for my problem, but though I found some similar stuff, noone had quite my problem.
I was checking my Nexus S after a trip and it was with the 'emergency only' message. This sometimes happens to me, not sure if it's due to the roaming activation or caused by a bug where the radio subsystem crashes after a long period without network.
Anyway, I proceeded to my common solution: Turn off and reboot.
Except that after the phone was off, it would not turn on.
It doesn't even vibrate. It doesn't show anything when connected to the wall socket or to the computer. It's just completely dead.
Now, I'm not even sure if this is a hardware or software problem. Any idea on how I can debug this?
Here's what I've tried:
1. Take the battery out: no changes (even tried leaving it out overnight).
2. Charge the phone overnight: no change.
Next step: I'll go to a store and try a different battery... meanwhile I'm without my primary phone which sucks... Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance!
Try booting your phone into the bootloader. Hold the power button and volume up button simultaneously.
If it is not the battery, i can see what else you can do, a "dont turn on" phone is a dead end...

Guess I'm screwed... I had some pics and other data there... anyway I can get it back? i.e. is there a way to remove the internal sd card?

Sounds like something is wrong with the hardware then. Have you brought it the store? Might need to get a new one on warranty.
I have the same issue with my old Blackberry 9000. It worked fine up until I stopped using it. Left it in a drawer for a few months. Went to sell it to Sprint. Wouldn't turn on. No LED, no nothing. Worked fine months before when I was still using it. To this day I have no idea what's wrong with it and it doesn't turn on.
Why not get an external battery charger and charge the battery up and then test it?
All true, and after trying with a new battery I'll have a bit more information.
But what strikes me as odd is that I didn't leave it in a drawer - I didn't even let the battery run down... it was just a damn reboot! I shut it down, and then couldn't power it up again (try and imagine THAT happening to you). It would be odd for the battery to be sucked dry all of a sudden...
I have a feeling that there's something else... maybe while shutting down something burned out in the power circuitry....? =S
No one ever heard of anything like what I'm experiencing? It sucks to be the only one!
Thanks for all the help so far, guys!
If you can get to download mode nothing is lost. Just flash new image via Odin.

Never heard of that happening, but it's a possibility... Still, I would first attribute it to a bad battery and try that first

With a new battery (that works on another nexus S) still no luck. =(
I still can't find anyone with this problem. I feel like the unluckiest idiot on Earth.
I assume I can't get to download mode since I can't even get the phone to report it is charging (it used to do that even if off). Do you want me to try anything, though? I'm open to suggestions until Monday. Then I'm taking it to Samsung. Hope they can recover my pictures.
BTW, my receipt doesn't have the IMEI and a customer service rep told me I need it on the receipt or they won't give me free support. How can I get it with the phone off?
Regards and thanks to all who responded,

nuno, if you cant power on even with a new charged battery, then it's a harware fault and nothing can me done... =o\

I've got the same problem: dead nexus s after a reboot. It says "no service" emergency call does not work. Did you try flashing a different rom? Or radio/
I haven't experienced this myself but I'm very interested on what happened. Did you guys flash any custom ROMS? or Radios for that matter?
This looks very similar to what i have. I just got my nexus s GT-i9023, it doesn't boot into fast boot, recovery, download mode or normal. The most activity i have got so fare is when i take the battery out, put it back it, and try turn the phone on it will sometimes flash then do nothing. I have looked every ware. When i use "./platform-tools/adb get-state" it returns "unknown". Any help would be great.
What i think i did was this:
- Unlocked bootloader, this worked
- restart
- installed clockwork mod with fast boot, this worked
- wiped data
- wiped cache (correct me if i spelt that wrong, or anything else)
- flashed cyanogenmod, this got an error but i didn't notice it the first time and i can't remember what it was.
- flashed gapps, this didn't work, when i restarted the phone it said that the installer for gaps had quit.
- restarted
- flashed cyanogenmod again, this is when i noticed the error
- restarted, didn't change anything
- wiped data
- wiped cache
- flashed i9020t recovery, this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061855 i think this is what stuffed it up because my phone is i9023
- wiped data after flashing, thats what it said to do, i thought it was strange but i went along with it.
- wiped cache
- reboot
- now doesnt work.
Take it to the store where you purchased and claim ignorance!

[Q] Phone won't Turn on?

I am running SACs23 4.3V4.2 rom. I have been having now issues. I plugged my phone in to charge for a couple of hours. Came back and the notification light was blinking for sms. I unplugged the phone and pushed the power button. The screen would not turn on. The notification light died out and now nothing. I have tried booting into recovery, hard reset, and pulling the battery. When I plug the phone back in with or without a battery there is no charging indication. The phone is lifeless. Not sure what to do, I have never seen this. When I plug it into the computer, nothing happens. I can not get into recovery or download mode...the phone does nothing. Any suggestions or ideas?:crying:
The micro USB charging port appears to be not working. You can buy it on Ebay for $10 and replace it yourself. Fairly straightforward.
stupid question but I have to ask, have you tried a different usb cable?

Yes. Charging port works fine. 2hrs later, I put the battery back in and it booted. Used my phone for the next 24hrs and then put it on charger. Woke up this morning and same thing. Very odd!
This happens to me when ever I don't use the original charger
Can you get into your recovery? Sacs, has an update to v4.3 in his op that's working very well if you can download it on PC and transfer to your sd card. Dirty flash it and see what happens. My guess is, you are having the same boot lag issues as most others were having and there is a zip file you can flash in Sac's OP for that also for v4.2.
If you can get into your recovery, dirty flash his update.
Your phone, charger port and wire are fine. It's the lag everyone was getting to get the screen to come up.
Sac's is doing one more update so it may be a few minutes before the link is up, but here is the direct link for you..
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23212708291682600
Until the update is reuploaded, for the heck of it, dirty flash v4.2 and DO NOT select any of the lockscreen effects like lightening or blue orb. The lag has been narrowed down to possibly being that problem.
Lag issue flash file to be flashed in recovery
https://www.dropbox.com/s/gy2d6ajg30utnjd/lag_fix.zip
Try pulling the battery and leaving out for say ten minutes or so
Some clarification:
1. I 've pulled the battery and waited from 10min to 3hours. No change.
2. Plugging into computer and the phone nor computer responds to eachother.
3. I am using the original Sammy charger.
4. This is the 2nd time this has happened but after 24hrs of being off it still will not respond to anything.
5. I took it to Sprint today and they ordered me a replacement phone. They had 3 of their best techs troubleshooting for 2hrs and couldn't find anything wrong with the phone, except for that it doesn't do anything.:crying:
6. I am hoping my new phone doesn't suffer the same fate. I can honestly say this is my 3rd Sammy phone and the 1st time I've had to take it back for anything and I am always flashing new roms from trusted devs.
This one has me puzzeled! Oh, this happened after I updated to MJA software and firmware but no KNOX! So, maybe I am having an issue with the new MJA....sounds like a lot of phones (various carriers) are. I'll update if I learn anything new.

Sprint just issued an update today that is suppose to fix this issue. If you can get back to stock take the OTA and see if it helps. You have the sleep of death issue and the mk2 OTA mentions sleep issues as the main fix. Hopefully this is what they are fixing.

Random Power Off & Boot Loop Galaxy S4 GT-I9505

Hi,
Not sure what is happening to my phone. I have had stock 4.2.2 rooted with CF auto root for months and had no problems. A few weeks ago my phone started to randomly shut down, not properly just complete power off in an instant. It would then start to reboot and get to the Samsung S4 logo screen before powering off again and trying to reboot and then gets stuck in a constant loop. At first I was able to just reinstall CF root with Odin and it would start up OK. I could also get it to start by re-installing Philz recovery.
Now though, that doesn't work so this morning I installed JB 4.3 I9505XXUEMK8-PRE-ROOTED-KNOX-FREE-ODEX-FULL.tar.MD5 and it says that it is rooted and everything seems to be OK but after an hour or so it has started to randomly shut down again. If I attempt to go into recovery (stock) and clear the cache partition it will reboot normally and run for a while until I use an app and do it again. Am I doing something wrong here or is my phone just knackered?

Maybe is coz the RAM is overloaded. Take a look in:
- Press HOME button for 2 secs
- U will see 3 icons in the bottom. Click on the "cheese"
- Tab "RAM"
- If ur phone use more of 1 GB of RAM for run ur apps maybe will be time of delete bloatware
I had the same problem in GT-I9500, I had to get it repaired in a service center.
There was a problem with mother board to charger port connection..
Hope it helps you!

Thanks. Probably not as I've been told that warrantee will be void now as I've flashed whilst having Knox installed which I understand to be irreversable

If u wanna try to recover some RAM u can delete some bloatware that u dont use. Tc with what u delete. I let u some info about if u wanna try -> HERE
I have this problem, I swear it is because of the dodgy battery. (I have the BD battery)
When I plug it in to charge all works again properly.
Last night my battery was showing in the high 60's the phone went off. When I put charger in the battery was at 3%!
Very annoying, going to take to Geek Squad tonight and see if they wil lreplace battery. Guy here at work has same phone, different battery derial number and no problems at all.
Hopefully they will change the battery, I don't have any paperwork with me but the phone is obviously within the 1 year warrenty.

Interesting. I have noticed a couple of times when I look at the battery stats that it has drained from say 90% to 3% in less than 1min, just a verticle line. When I plug it in to charge it says that it's at 90% or whatever it was. Other times it needs charging and is almost dead. It's as though it has shorted out. I wonder if that is the problem here.

Thanks for that. It's quite a list. I'll go through it and remove the ones i think i can do without and see how it goes.
Same Issue
I have the same problem with my I9505
- It shuts down randomly (sometimes you see a few seconds in advance that your connection to the mobile antennas disconnects), when you look at it, in the middle of a phonecall, ... whenever it's nog plugged in to the power of external battery
- It's almost impossible to get it powered on again (gets stuck in a loop of rebooting: most times at the Samsung logo or after it's on for a few seconds), unless you connect your charger that is connected to the powergrid or external battery
- sometimes it resets the phonelanguage to default (so in stead of for example Dutch, everything is in English again)
I just cleared the cache and removed some programs...
Fingers crossed
--> I'll give an update if anything changes

I've tried that as well. Didn't work. The problem you describe is exactly the problem I have. I have ordered another battery but I don't think it's that. I'll let you know if it is. I hadn't noticed that it always boots OK if it is plugged into the mains. Wish I knew what was causing the problems.
Random Shutdown and boot loop
So I think I am finally getting somewhere. I took this screenshot straight after it shut down and got stuck in a boot loop. So I plugged it into the mains and it started OK. The battery just gives up when i stress the device with a hungry app or when booting which causes a heavy drain on the on the power even when its got a healthy charge. Got a new battery on order. Take a look at the screenshot. You can see the battery instantaneously drops to zero charge until it's re-booted on the mains.

in the list I forgot to mention that the known wifi's are also wiped. --> you have to connect to them again...
I too am having this exact problem; I'm glad to hear it is not only me, not that it helps any of us.
I posted in another thread, but the symptoms everyone here are describing are exactly what I am seeing:
- Sudden battery drop from anything (it's happened to me before about 5 minutes after unplugging from the wall socket) to zero; then phone goes into a loop unless I plug it back into the mains socket
- When plugging into the mains socket with this issue, sometimes the battery is empty and sometimes it shoots straight back up to where it was
- Plants Vs Zombies 2 is the sure-fire way for me to reproduce this issue
- examined logs (although not sure if the right one) using CatLog; nothing obvious (in fact the last line on one of the logs is litterally cut halfway through)
- Wifi connection details lost occasionally
I have reflashed about 4 other (4.3) ROMs (and I tried a 4.4 GE one too) and they all seem to do the same; I am wondering if it is something to do with the non-Knox modems required to flash the 4.3 ROMs as I don't think I had this problem before updating to 4.3. I don't have the time or patience to revert back to a 4.2 ROM to test this though.
I can go for a couple of days without this happening, but fire up PvZ2 and here we go again.
I too have a new battery on order (allegedly genuine from a well-known auction site), so I will update this thread when that arrives to see if it makes any difference.
I don't like this post for one reason.... it means that the problem I am facing won't solve with a format and a new fresh flash... :crying:
I was spending some time on XDA searching for a good stable firmware to flash because I am having your exactly same issues on my phone... I just tought my phone got a bit messy because I have 130 apps installed and a lot of stuff on it.. so I was just thinking of solving all my problems with a new rom... but then I found this 3d...
So you are telling me that my problem won't get solved so easely? How am I going to deal with a Phone that randomly shuts up??? I need my phone and over the last week it got always worse.. first it shut up at about 5pm.. (at ca 15% charge) then at 3pm and 50% charge... today it shut up at 11am and 80% charge... soon I won't be able to use my phone at all!!
I'm happy I backed up all my data today, but it still doesn't solve my problem since I really need my phone... :crying:
This evening I'm going to flash anyway... let's see what happens..
PS I own a GT-I9505 with 4.2.2 stock rom (root)
Random Shutdown and boot loop
Sorry to hear there's a few more out there with the same problem that I am having. AhHm... Sorry, WAS having. I tried re-flashing all sorts of ROMS from 4.2.2 to Echoe KitKat 4.4, flashed CF Root, reinstalled philz touch recovery god knows how many times all to no avail. I now know that it is nothing to do with your ROM or phone setup. It's Samsungs crappy battery. As soon as I put in my new battery problems solved. I have been running multi-window apps whilst having FB on in the background and watching a film all at the same time. If this was gonna crash it would have done by now.
Problem solved. Don't buy the cheap SPB £9.99 one on ebay it has lots of bad reviews. I got this one with no problems:

I'm glad you solved.. this means there could be a solution to my problem... in any case the fact that alla batteries here seem to fail in the same week is really strange!!
And the thing I hate most is that a 500€ phone shouldn't be dying after just some months!
After having spent some time googling around.. I found a solution... well, not exactly a solution... let's say I found the core of the problem...
I found some very interesting posts on the misfuncion on all Samsung S4 Batteries Made and Produced in China with SN starting with BD....
And guess what? my battery corresponds!!
If you look at the battery you will notice that it is a little "bumped" and not perfectly flat...
Here in Italy many users went to samsung customer service and got the battery replaced!
Tomorrow I will check to see if I can get a new battery... for now I'm happy to know exactly what to do in order to get my phone working again!

Yeah I found that out tonight also. I called samsung earlier today and they said if it is less than 2 years old they will repair it and I should send it to them. I have flashed so many ROMS since I purchased it last year and one or two with Knox which as we know registers that it has had a custom download which voids the warrantee so I thought it would be a waste of time sending it to them. Also I need my phone for work so it was easier to purchase a new battery.

Hi,
Do you have a link to the info? was it on an official samsung site?

Note 4 wont turn on, "cannot boot normal" and "downlaoding target, dont turn off"

Note 4 wont turn on, "cannot boot normal" and "downlaoding target, dont turn off"
Its a Note 4 SM-N910F, Android 6.0.1, BB N910FXXU1DPE2, kernel 3.10.40-7733605 [email protected] #1
i feel I have tried everything... History:
Phone has been working fine for a year, upgraded to 6.0.1 no problems about 2 or 3 months ago. no new apps installed. Last week it started getting very laggy, keyboard strokes took for ever to register. I thought, ok, time to to a factory reset to blow out any old cobwebs. Did it via the menu. However the phone froze midway thought. I left it for an hour and then pulled out the battery. I popped it back in and it performed the reset without me having to press anything. Cool, thats good I thought.
Now I was going to change the battery, so I powered off as normal and put my other 2 week old original samsung battery in, and it would not power on. After a few reinsertions it powered back on. I though i have to do another reset. So I tried, and it would not reset. It just died. I cant restart the phone, it dies. If I shut it down normally. it wont turn on back on, I have to take out and reinsert the battery multiple times, holding down the powerbutton between to discharge. this can take up to 10 tries now. Sometimes it will go th the unable to bot in normal mode and "downloading , do not turn of target, but it will stay there for ever, more than an hour.
Every 15-20 tries it would turn on, let me get in via pin, only to start freezing up within a min, and then die again. Somewhere I read that a guy hada similar problem, and he used wakelock and that worked, on level 4. I managed to download that and used it, and hey presto, it works!
Now I had to power down the phone for a reason, and it took me about 30 min of battery and powerbuttonholding before it managed to boot up, and I was quick enough to start wakelock on level 4.
It wont boot in to safe mode, it wont boot in to recovery mode, it wont boot in to the factory reset mode. Its the same with either battery, and different cables.
Any ideas what i can do here, or what could be wrong? I havent gotten it wet or banged it.
I am having the same exact issue on a N910A. Phone was functioning correctly and in December it started getting really laggy. Performed various resets, purchased new battery. Still laggy. Up until two weeks ago the phone was slow but now it will not power on . The phone will not charge as well.
Mine did same, 6 months old, not rooted stock firmware. Locked up yesterday, couldn't do anything. Pulled battery and restarted. Samsung logo comes on screen goes black for android boot then it hangs with blue led flashing. Nothing I do gets it past that point. Tried safe boot but it doesn't fully launch with correct button combo and volume up. In the end I re-installed firmware using Keis. All went well, everything as per youtube tutorial. Except one thing, at end of download phone didn't re-start. Still can't get it to boot, any ideas?
Edit: Lock up didn't coincide with any new apps being loaded or updates of existing. Only change was a week ago which was an automatic update of the stock firmware (Lollipop)

are you still under warranty? i sent mine to a samsung center, the guy recognized the problem as the motherboard, said I wasnt the first. That was 3 weeks ago, they are STILL waiting for the parts. They say the Samsung factory are way behind with repair parts, etc etc. I am hoping it will go under warranty. Ill update when I know!
I've been having the same problem that started yesterday morning. I've tried a few different solutions but nothings worked, I get the feeling that my phone is dead and I'm not in warranty either. I'm going to approach Samsung but my guess is they will want more than the phone is worth to repair it. I've read about so many people having the same issues, its horrendous engineering on Samsungs part considering how much their phones cost to start with

Your guess is probably correct and I totally agree with you. I seriously think manufacturers do not want their devices to be problem free for more than two years. Probably why they have stopped making phones with batteries that simply pop out.

Definitely...surely it couldn't have been that hard to make a device with a battery that was still removable on the newer phones. It's frightening how many forum posts I've found with people having their phones just brick out of nowhere (and that's just the note 4). I've given up trying to fix mine, I've tried every method I could find and nothings worked. I can only assume that this problem is simply the motherboard of the phone not working anymore. I'm not even sure what phone to buy now but it certainly won't be a Samsung.

If you do not care about the camera thera are a lot of rather affordable options which can be tossed in the bin when they start malfunctioning and if their warranty has run out. If you care about the camera being as good as the Note 4's than the range of phones you can buy is quite limited.

I think the camera on the note 4 is absolutley terrible. I might even go so far as to say the pictures are unusable. the applied noise reduction renders everything splotchy, colors are off and its not sharp at all. and Im not talking dark conditions here.
Anyway, my phone was repaired under warranty and is back to working as it should. It was indeed the motherboard, so if you have the same troubles I had, those are your best bets.
I don't think replacement via warranty will be available. I will attempt to power into download mode and verify if I can get it back up and running. If not, a good ole paperweight.

Sounds like the problems I have: with my first N910F: started with lagging apps / freezing, then random reboots now and then, eventually giving error messages when booting. Finally, now it will only start after the battery has been out for at least 30 minutes, but hangs on error message. When pulling battery out and putting back in it, wont give a single sign of life. Since I was just out of warranty it has been lying around, and I bought a second hand N910F for replacement, sadly its starting to give the same errors too and is just out of warranty too (its currently still working, but with freezes / reboots / and already a event with boot error).
I read It could be memory chips or some power chip on the motherboard, appears to be a common problem. So.... Last month I bought a new motherboard on ebay (chinese delivery, 80€). Received it last week and put it back in; phone is back to life. (putting it in is a very simple task, with iFixit teardown / guide)
Anyway, I love the Note 4 for performance / size / looks, and have been Samsung fan for a while, but this recent breakdowns and information that it is fairly common, has diminished being a fan fairly quickly and I guess the Note 4 will be the last Samsung device for a while after this new motherboard breaks down as well

My phone is also random Rebooting
It also shuts down at 25% of battery remaining, Have you also faced similar issue?
Download the app "Wake Lock" and run the Partial Wake Lock option. Apparently the updated software impacts the CPU. For the restarting issue, put it in the freezer for a couple minutes. You may have to take the battery out once, but it has worked for me every time.
This looks very much like the issue reported here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...-error-fix-t3434335/post72944466#post72944466
There are temporary fixes (wakelock), but ultimately this is a harware issue, and the fix is a new motherboard.
I think that underlying it is a problem with heat affecting the eMMC chip or its connection to the motherboard.

Hey can u pls get me the stock firmware for n910gddu1dpb4
You might find this interesting. Since I couldn't get mine to power up at all, I called Samsung tech and they quoted me $75 to fix it and they would pay for shipping. I figured it was better then getting another phone off Swappa. 2-3 weeks later i get an email that they are repairing it under warranty at no cost to me. I got a refurbished phone since i know my IEMI number was different. they didn't explain why. Anyway, I got lucky i guess.
